Theft of Chainsaws Dental Health held over until end of March

by Trent Brereton, ND
On 2 January, 2012, at 12:55 hrs, a report was received by the Cranbrook RCMP about the theft of thirteen chainsaws from a storage area at Purcell Resources, in the 300 block of Industrial Rd G. An employee had just noticed the theft that morning when he checked the storage area and noticed all the chainsaws were missing. Of the thirteen Husqavarna chainsaws that were stolen, nine had not been used previously. A bolt cutter was used to break the security chain. Total cost of stolen saws that were taken is approximately $11,900.
to a food. It is very effective in helping people with digestive symptoms and migraine headaches and there is ample scientific evidence supporting the use of these tests. Dr. Lavine takes issue with IgG testing being called "allergy testing" and this is a valid criticism. True allergy testing measures an antibody called immunoglobulin E (IgE) whereas IgG testing measures hypersensitivity reactions. Both IgE and IgG measure immune responses to foods and environmental substances. The main difference between the two antibodies is that IgE is very fast acting and people with this type of allergy typically know they have a reaction (i.e., they eat a peanut and get hives). IgG reactions are slow and people are typically not aware of these reactions. It seems to me that Dr. Lavine is being irresponsible in negating the value of IgG hypersensitivity testing over what seems like simple semantics.

Unfounded criticism on food testing The Globe and Mail published an article critical of blood food IgG testing (for food sensitivity) last week that does not represent the facts. In this article, allergy specialist Elana Lavine, MD is highly critical of commercial tests used to identify allergies, sensitivities and intolerances saying they are a waste of money. I invite Dr. Lavine to tell this to the parents of a young boy I saw several weeks ago who had severe diarrhea, stomach pain, fatigue and an inability to gain weight. These symptoms were ongoing for two years with no conclusive findings despite extensive testing. We tested this child with an IgG blood test and found that he is highly reactive to wheat, eggs and milk. Removing these foods from his diet has resulted in a complete resolution of his symptoms. Blood allergy testing measures circulating levels of an antibody called immunoglobulin G (IgG) that the body makes when there is a hypersensitivity

Imagine. "Limitless Horizons"
Food from around the world La Dolce Vita By Lorne Eckersley
A few weeks ago I described my lack of enthusiasm for a television series on wine, Oz and James’ Big Wine Adventure. Shortly afterward I received another DVD recommendation from Merry Ann, the Librarian, here in Creston. “You will love this,” she said, handing over the disks containing the ¿rst season of Diary of a Foodie. A couple weeks later, with nearly 50 episodes (they each run for 24 minutes) under my belt, I am hooked. The series was produced by Gourmet a magazine I subscribed to more than 20 years ago. Dazzling photos and wonderful recipes were the appeal but I eventually let the subscription lapse. Living in a small town where many of the ingredients were impossible to ¿nd and having a couple of young kids at the table didn’t provide the ideal conditions for meals that were more exotic than practical in many cases. I’ve spent some time in the web site since Ann passed on that ¿rst season of Diary of a Foodie. With joy, I discovered that all of the episodes can be watched directly from that web site, which is one of the most user friendly sites I have ever visited. Each episode emerges from a picture box. Click on the arrow and it plays
in its entirety. Use the enlarge icon to watch it full screen size. Hook the computer up to your television and watch it in large, high de¿nition format. It’s that easy. Even better, below the picture box for each episode is a list of recipes for each dish referred to in the show. Click on a recipe and the complete details appear. So what is the appeal of the program? Gourmet describes the series: “With the breadth of international travel combined with a passion for food, Gourmet’s Diary of a Foodie delivers a unique cultural look at the world, food ¿rst. Each episode of this mouthwatering food, culture, and travel series dives into the diverse realm of the world’s greatest cuisine, from New Zealand’s purest honey to Italy’s famous Parmigiano-Reggiano. Over the course of 20 half-hour (Season One) episodes, this James Beard Award-winning series promises to unearth an all-new feast of fabulous food trends, exotic ingredients, and in-the-know food players.” What I especially like is that the series is like a smorgasbord, allowing the viewer to dip into an enormous variety of topics, from the traditional foods of Oaxaca to the exotic creations of the guys I call mad scientists of the kitchen, who use liquid nitrogen to quick-freeze whipped cream concoctions and
laser beams to create thyme smoke that is captured in an upsidedown wine glass, to be turned over in front of a customer who has ordered a dish whose Àavor is enhanced by the aroma. While many foodies are disdainful of these science-obsessed chefs and their love of things like intenselyÀavoured foams, I like the idea that they push the boundaries of cuisine. And they are certainly just as passionate as others in the food world. It is reassuring, too, to know that there are farmers who are succeeding with crops like heirloom tomatoes and heritage potatoes, making small batches of high quality butter from free-range Jersey cows and ¿nding ways—in Tasmania, of all places—to grow trufÀes. I don’t think I have watched an episode that I haven’t made a mental note to watch again. Each one is like taking a compact tour of into a different aspect of food around the world and each has at least an idea or two that even an amateur cook can apply in a home kitchen. Included in each 24-minute segment is a presentation by one of Gourmet’s editors, who demonstrate how to prepare a dish, usually quite simply, in the home kitchen. A food and wine lover who hasn’t checked out Diary of a Foodie at www.gourmet.com/diaryofafoodie is missing out on a great treat.

Cultural Alliance seeing new members for steering committee The Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance (CKCA) invites members of the arts, culture and heritage community in the Columbia Basin to join its volunteer Steering Committee. The CKCA is a representative body of the arts, culture and heritage communities across the Basin, and manages and administers arts, culture, and heritage funding programs on behalf of Columbia Basin Trust (CBT). The CKCA Steering Committee consists of 14 members: six from the West Kootenay, ¿ve from the East Kootenay, one from the Valemount area and two from the Heritage sector. CKCA represents all the disciplines in the arts (visual art, music, theatre, dance, ¿lm/video and literary arts), culture and heritage; therefore, it is important to provide broad representation on the Steering Committee. CKCA is particularly interested in new members that represent youth or cultural diversity. Steering Committee members are elected for two-year terms and represent the broader needs of arts, culture and heritage sectors in the Basin rather than individual arts councils or heritage organizations, or the communities in which they live. Nominees to the Steering Committee must have a strong background in arts, culture or heritage, should have experience in working on boards/committees and must understand the needs and issues of the sector in order to develop funding programs/ policies and adjudicate proposals. Members are expected to attend at least two meetings per year in various locations in the Basin. Nominees to the CKCA Steering Committee do not have to be members of any organizations, but must be nominated by their local community arts councils or by the Heritage Federation of South East BC (HFSEBC). Each eligible arts council may put forward only one nomination. If there are more arts council nominees in each region than seats available on the Steering Committee, regional elections will be held in the beginning of April. The HFSEBC may put forward one nomination this year. The HFSEBC
nominee will be elected at its annual AGM. It is recommended that nominees (if elected) will be willing to attend occasional arts council or HFSEBC meetings to stay in touch with lo-
cal/sector issues. Currently, community arts councils eligible for nominating representatives to the Steering Committee are: West Kootenay: Arrow Lakes (Nakusp
Area), Castlegar, North Kootenay Lake, Rossland, Salmo (including Ymir), Trail (Fruitvale/ Montrose) and Slocan Lake (Silverton/New Denver) East Kootenay: Cran-
brook, Creston, Kimberley, Golden and Sparwood and District. North: Valemount All other communities/sectors currently have a sitting Steering Committee member.
For more information on the nomination process, please contact your local arts council or call CKCA at 1-877505-7355. For more information on CKCA, please visit www.bas-
inculture.com. Deadline for arts council nominations is 5 pm, Monday, April 2, 2012.

Teachers’ Federation going to court to battle new legislation By Tom Fletcher Black Press The B.C. Teachers’ Federation is going back to court to challenge the legislation that has put an end to its latest strike action, but teachers will be back on the job once spring break is over. At a news conference in Vancouver Wednesday, BCTF president Susan Lambert announced that union members will take part in a province-wide vote on April 17 and 18 to decide if they will withhold voluntary extra-curricular duties to protest Bill 22. The legislation gives the provincial government the authority to impose heavy ¿nes for strike action during an imposed six-month cooling-off period. A second member vote would have to be held with majority support before the union approves any strike action that would defy Bill 22 and trigger ¿nes of $1.3 million a day for the union and $475 a day for individual teachers. Year-end report cards will be completed to allow students to apply for scholarships and post-secondary education, Lambert said. Lambert appeared to rule out any further work-to-rule action as students return from spring break, but she left the door open for individual districts to begin immediately withholding voluntary extra-curricular duties such as coaching that are done outside of school hours. “We’re a federation of autonomous locals, and yes, they will be making their own decisions,” Lambert said. “The plan envisions a province-wide action, and that would be one that would I guess join up with the local actions that have already been started.” Bill 22 goes beyond forcing an end to the strike that has had teachers refusing to complete report cards or meet with administrators since last September. It reimposes restrictions on class size and special needs support that a B.C. Supreme Court decision last year ruled were done without adequate
consultation. Lambert said that will be a focus of new legal action. “Bill 22 addresses the judgment by repealing it in one paragraph
and reinstating it in the next,” she said. “That’s more than arrogant.” Education Minister George Abbott returns next week from a 10-
day visit to China promoting educational exchange. He said he will appoint a mediator when he returns, to seek agreement within
the terms of the government’s two-year wage freeze. The BCTF did not release the “action plan” worked out during
delegate meetings in Vancouver this week, but did indicate that it rejects a provision of Bill 22 that could pay teachers extra if they

teach classes of more than 30 students. Lambert termed the extra pay offer “cash for kids” and called it “totally unethical.”

Affordable rental housing gets boost As a result of federal and provincial investments, a new program, the Affordable Rental Housing initiative (ARHi), will soon be
available in the Columbia Basin region for households in need. Columbia Basin Trust (CBT) has also partnered with the Province in this
Monday, March 26, 2012 Kootenay News Advertiser initiative to deliver essential affordable rental housing. Through the CanadaBritish Columbia Agreement for Investment in Affordable Housing 2011-2014, the Government of Canada and the Province of British Columbia are providing a combined investment
of $5 million over three years to support new affordable rental housing projects in communities across the Columbia Basin. Through a separate funding agreement with the Province, CBT is contributing a further $5 million to this initiative. “Our government is committed to develop-
ing and implementing local solutions to local housing challenges,” said the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Of¿cial Languages and Minister Responsible for British Columbia on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Re-
sources and Skills Development and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). “Through this new program, seniors and families of Columbia Basin will have access to affordable rental housing that meets their needs.” “This is a wonderful

announcement for our region,” said Bill Bennett, MLA for Kootenay East. “Columbia Basin Trust is such an important player in all of our communities and it is gratifying to see the Province working so well and so collaboratively with CBT on such an important issue.” Details on how to apply for the Affordable Rental Housing initiative and request for proposals for the procurement of potential affordable rental housing projects will be available in Spring 2012. “Our partnership with the provincial government represents a unique opportunity for CBT to help address a priority issue for a number of Basin communities,” said Garry Merkel, CBT board chair. “We’re excited this partnership can help communities make affordable rental housing projects a reality.” The Canada-British Columbia Agreement for Investment in Affordable Housing 20112014, signed in July 2011, con¿rms the remaining three years of B.C.’s ¿ve-year allocation of the Government of Canada’s 2008 commitment of more than $1.9 billion to improve and build new affordable housing and help the homeless. This means a further $90 million in federal funding for British Columbians in housing need. With matching provincial contributions of $90 million, a total combined investment of $180 million helps to support affordable housing programs for B.C. residents. The Government of Canada, through CMHC, will invest more than $2 billion in housing this year. Of this amount, $1.7 billion will be spent in support of almost 615,000 households living in existing social housing. In British Columbia, this represents some 71,000 households. Elk Valley sports get more than $750,000 Organizations in Fernie and Sparwood will receive a total of $750,937 from the Ministry of Community, Sport, and Cultural Development’s Community Recreation Program to fund projects which will improve recreational infrastructure. “I’m pleased with how the Community Recreation Program was designed. We’re seeing a wide variety of funding applications that all relate back to helping people get out there and fun, often times while supporting environmentally friendly initiatives as well. That’s a great win-win situation for the Elk Valley,” said Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett Who will bene¿t: • Fernie – Max Turyk Soccer Field Development - $350,937 • By re-aligning the existing Max Turyk ¿eld, there will be space for the construction of an additional regulation-sized soccer ¿eld. • This will result in increased capacity for hosting tournaments and offer green space to community members for many casual recreational activities. • Sparwood – Sparwood Leisure Centre Energy Retro¿t $400,000 • Replacing the 27-year-old heating system and gas boilers at Sparwood Leisure Centre will reduce GHG emissions by 163 tonnes/year and save the District approximately $49,000/year. • These savings will be invested in public engagement activities to promote active living.

How about screening that porch? One of my best childhood memories is of visiting my grandmother. She had a wonderful summer kitchen, where it was always cool and breezy. It was comfy and peaceful, protected from direct sunshine and bad weather. The screen door creaked and closed with a bang, its tightly coiled spring a sound of pure country. When I close my eyes, I can still hear that door, and the murmur of adults chatting on the porch, making the most of summer evenings. Summer kitchens seem a thing of the past, but home renovators can recreate the unique feel of an oldfashioned veranda with a screened-in porch.

ing the value of your home, partially enclosing a porch will prolong its life many-fold. An enclosed porch gives the impression of being outside while being protected from rain, wind, and mosquitoes. It’s a patio transformed into an extra room in the home, with the additional advantage of comfort and dryness. In other words, it captures summer at its best! This can be a very affordable project, as screens are a lot less
expensive than the large windows required for three- and fourseason porches. Do-ityourselfers can build their own porches, with some guidance from a building materials or renovators store. For a few dollars, you can even obtain plans for this type of construction. With just a little bit of effort, and a springed screen door, summer living at your home can be just like it was in the good old days!
