MAKING A DIFFERENCE Front Load, and now many top load washers offer some of the largest energy savings potential in your home. A front load washer uses 65 liters of water per load. A traditional top load washer can use up to 140 liters per load. That’s over 200,000 liters of water savings over the life of the washer! Not to mention the money you save on electricity. Traditionally a washer uses 420 KwH per year. By switching to a front load washer you will be using 142 KwH per year.

LESS HYDRO R ecently we have completed a project that will reduce

our hydro impact by over 25%. This was a major undertaking and the project lasted 2 months. We installed more than 1000 energy efficient light bulbs and fixtures featuring cutting edge energy saving electronics. The over $90,000 price tag has already been paying dividends and the energy savings is astounding. Our plan, going forward, is to use that savings to bring innovative products and solutions to our customers. Like our state of the art design center and newly planned galleries. It will also allow us to maintain our community involvement with our tents. You will see us in more places this year. Watch for us!

BUY CANADIAN A t Bridge Interiors we are proud to sell a huge core of

Canadian made, locally grown products. Our store is full of high quality, reasonably priced Canadian made furniture for every room in your home. Buying Canadian generally means better for the environment, a common theme but important. Less travel time means less fuel and energy. Plus our higher labour and safety standards ensure proper and environmentally effective manufacturing procedures. It also supports the Canadian economy. And with all that, remember you get a high quality product made with real wood, higher quality foam and other genuine materials.

B elow is a list of suppliers we support. High quality

furniture made right here in Canada. Come in and check them out or research them online. We promise they will not disappoint.

POWER SAVINGS In our project we converted; 75 watt halogen bulbs to 18 watt LED’s 60 watt incandescent to 13 watt LED’s Magnetic ballasts to electronic 32 w fluorescents to 30 w fluorescents

We received over $40,000 back from BC Hydro in the form of rebates. Thanks Hydro.

A report from the Cranbrook Chamber of Commerce We have just completed the ¿rst quarter of 2012. I am pleased to be able to report that our Chamber committees have been very active following through on many of the strategies discussed at our January strategy session. Our membership committee, led by Director Jim Benson and working with our membership coordinator Laura Haley is working hard to attract new members and retain our existing membership to keep us strong and representative of the business community. To date, we have a total of 481 members which is 32% of the licensed business in Cranbrook. In an effort to help new members to the Cranbrook & District Chamber of Commerce feel welcome and nurtured in their ¿rst months of membership, the Cranbrook & District Chamber of Commerce has formed a membership support committee. The committee acts as an outreach and retention committee de-

signed to involve and inform new members of chamber bene¿ts and upcoming events and programs. Committee members are volunteers who, on behalf of the Chamber, make goodwill calls to encourage strong continuing membership and active support of chamber programs. Committee members assist in membership retention by contacting new chamber members regularly. They relay information, identify business challengers, and help new members to feel welcome and comfortable at chamber events. Jim Benson chairs the committee and is joined by Melanie Fiorentino, Corinne Friesen, Penny Coyle, Stephen Wik, Lily Durham and Tanya Laing Gahr. Our communications committee is focused on ensuring that we share information our members, and understand their issues and concerns. One of our current priorities, led by director Chris Botterill,

is to undertake a signi¿cant up-date to our website. When complete, it will be an even stronger format for communicating with our members, and for providing information about Cranbrook for businesses and visitors. Dave Butler & Tristen Chernove share the Tourism portfolio. These two have put hours into a new initiative to grow tourism in Cranbrook. Many of our tourism business are taking an active part with Dave & Tristen to ensure this plan becomes a reality. Our retail committee chaired by Connor Stewart work to improve the environment for the retail sector in Cranbrook. Last year the committee coordinated the very successful Black Friday. This committee have been following the successful story of a small community in Miner Country where a team of students prepared and calculated that is residents spent just 10 % more of their disposable income at home, there would

The Chamber is working towards having a representative from that committee come and

Thinking about downsizing? This might be the right time

Culligan Water, Beachcomber Hot Tubs and Flaman Fitness—conveniently located under one roof. Hi I’m Murray Floyd and I was asked to write a business pro¿le of my company. I feel very fortunate to say that my wife Sherri and I own and operate the local Culligan, Beachcomber

hot tub and Flaman ¿tness stores in Cranbrook. It all started back in 2002 when I started to work for the previous owner in sales for a period of one year to see if we

could work together. My goal was to see if I could buy in with the hopes of owning my own company some day. After the ¿rst year things went really well and I purchased a small percentage of

the business and within three years with the local Credit Union’s help I managed to not only purchase the business but the building as well a short year later. Even though this all sounds

grand it was during some very trying times with the local economy. In order to keep sales going and keep our staff employed we decided to reduce our pro¿t margins to be competive with the Alberta market. This proved to be a good decision as we managed to win Beachcombers store of the year two years in a row for 50,000 population and less for total sales. Beachcomber Cranbrook has been serving it’s customers for 29 years. Culligan is such a great franchise to own as they are respected throughout the world as leaders in water treatment industry and they have the highest standards for bottled water production. We have been proudly serving the East Kootenays for 38 years. Culligan Cranbrook’s mission has been to deliver high-quality water treatment products that will bene¿t every part of our customers’ lives.

We hope to raise the quality of life by purifying its most essential element: water. In 2009 I recognized a need for a ¿tness store in Cranbrook and with my having a diploma in ¿tness and nutrition it seemed to be a good decision. So I started the process of ¿nding a good ¿t for my other two product lines that would have the same quality and warranties that ours customers appreciate. Flaman is a 50-year-old company that really understands value and customer service and now that has been almost three years I know I made a good decision as we have very competitive products, great warranties and a fantastic selection of ¿tness equipment and supplies. All this is simply not attainable without a great staff; they really are the backbone of any great business. We currently have 15

long term employees that range from 10- 20 years. My goal and vision is to train and keep as many staff as possible as opposed to hiring part time staff to avoid paying a higher salary. I pay for the medical/ dental/ life insurance for the staff to help reduce their monthly costs. This really is a family business and we all help out to get the many jobs done. One minute you could be delivering a bottle of water, then a hot tub then you will most likely be delivering a treadmill in the afternoon all with a smile on your face. We need to take care of our customers as you’re not going to survive in a small town if you don’t take care of your customers. We just try and be honest with them and treat them as if they’re walking through the front door of your house. Another great part of owning a business is being able to help support our community. It really is a pleasure to be able to support local sport teams like hockey, baseball football, ¿gure skating and riding clubs. If it has anything to do with helping kids, I’m in. I commit to help kids in any way possible as they are the future of our great town. I am a very fortunate to own company that offers such great longterm value throughout our diverse product lines while having the experienced staff to serve our customers. Sincerely; Murray Floyd

Making a business based on energy efficiency and beauty Robin Wesman moved back to Canada and built a house in 2008. He spent 22 years in the U.S. as a builder/ developer and specialized in energy ef¿cient, cost effective housing. His favourite part of his projects was always landscaping. Originally he was going to buy a small business and leave the construction

¿eld permanently but instead he has combined his love for building and gardening into a business—actually three businesses—a landscaping, construction and gardening business all rolled into one. Now he’s created Budget Bobcat and Landscaping. With his Bobcat equipment

and trailers, including a yard dump trailer he can tackle any landscape projects. In addition he has turned his love of gardening and growing into an aspect of his business. He calls it “Gardens to You”. This department focuses on offering everybody the possibility to grow their own food. He uses the principles

of square foot gardening. He said that for $100 he can set you up with a square foot garden that will yield at todays prices $115 worth of fresh organic veggies, including spinach, beets, carrots and broccoli and in some cases you can get up to three harvests. So for $100 you can get a square foot garden

Volkswagen Canada is tearing up the market with quality

Volkswagen Canada has posted some great numbers for 2011, with the Passat being singled out as one of the company’s ¿nest performers. A year of strong results de¿ned 2011 for Volkswagen Canada. December sales of 3,565 cars pushed the

full year total to 52,604. This represents a new all-time high for the company, and eclipses the previous record set

in 2010 by 16 percent. “The combination of well-built, well-priced cars and an excellent Dealer network has

driven our results,â€? stated John White, President and CEO of Volkswagen Group Canada. “The solid launch of the all-new Passat has given us a strong player in the mid-size sedan market. It adds nicely to our product portfolio and compliments our other volume sellers, the Jetta, Golf and Tiguan.â€? December’s Âżgures were led by the Jetta, which posted sales of 1,607 during the month. Year-to-date, a total of 26,749 were sold. This made 2011 the most successful year ever for the car, which was introduced to Canadian drivers in 1980. The 2012 Passat was completely redesigned for the Canadian mar-

One year after the devastating earthquake and tsunami that struck Northeastern Japan on March 11, 2011, our thoughts remain with those whose lives were lost and the people of Japan who continue the effort to recover from this devastating natural disaster. We very much appreciate the patience of our customers who were willing to experience a delay in the delivery of some products due to severe parts shortages caused by the earthquake. We are thankful for their loyalty and for the expressions of support we received during these dif¿cult times. We also deeply appreciate the generous humanitarian support of Canadians from coast to coast. Thanks to the incredible dedication and teamwork of our associates, suppliers, and dealers, Honda has not only recovered from this dif¿cult challenge, we are rapidly bringing new fuel ef¿cient and fun-to-drive Honda and Acura vehicles to market. Further, even as we faced the most critical parts supply issues last year, we continued to make investments in our Àexible manufacturing operations in North America. We were thrilled to recently add production of the all-new 2012 CR-V to Honda of Canada Mfg. in Alliston, ON. Honda’s Canadian manufacturing facilities now produce Canada’s top two selling Honda vehicles: the CR-V, which is Canada’s best-selling import SUV, and the ever popular Honda Civic, Canada’s bestselling passenger car for the past 14 years. In the United States Honda has invested $500 million in production facilities in Ohio that will build our advanced Earth Dreams Powertrain technologies. In Alabama we are investing $275 million to increase production. And we are thrilled that the new Acura NSX is being developed and will be built in the United States. This past year also marked the 25th anniversary of Honda man-

Subaru goes from humble beginnings to state of the art cles. The total production of Subaru AWD vehicles has reached 11,782,812 units (as of January 31, 2012). This is approximately 55.7% of Subaru vehicle total sales. The AWD system provides traction effectively by distributing the engine power to all four wheels in a balanced manner. With the combination of Symmetrical AWD (SAWD) and Subaru’s Horizontally-Opposed Boxer Engine, the whole power train is mounted with side-toside symmetry and the transmission sits back from the front axle within the wheelbase.

This layout optimizes longitudinal-transverse weight balance. Those characteristics bring stable traction on multitude of road surfaces and driving conditions. Excellent stability at high speeds and superb cornering and responsiveness are also realized, making SAWD a core technology that underpins Subaru’s safety philosophy and enjoyment of driving. Through continuous Research & Development over 40 years, FHI has re¿ned its AWD technologies: from a technology capable of rough road driveability to a
