Guilty AUTUMN MacDONALD Observer Reporter The 12-member jury has found Bradley Van Dyke and Clarence Gill guilty on all four charges. A trial date to set a sentencing hearing is slated for April 10. Van Dyke and Gill were charged with break and enter to commit an indictable offence, assault, aggravated assault and using a firearm while committing or attempting to commit the indictable offence of assault after an incident in Bouchie Lake September 2009. Check future Observers for sentencing.

Kayaker rescued before hitting ice jam AUTUMN MacDONALD Observer Reporter A Gold Pan kayaker is lucky to be alive after spending the night along the river. At approximately 8 p.m. Saturday, Quesnel RCMP received a report of an overdue kayaker. RCMP were advised a 51-year-old Quesnel man had launched his kayak at White’s Landing near Dunkley earlier that day with plans to arrive in Quesnel before dark. When he failed to arrive and he could not be reached on his cell phone, a concerned friend reported him missing to RCMP. The experienced kayaker

was equipped with a survival pack, food, clothing and blankets. Quesnel Search and Rescue and Quesnel RCMP determined that a day time search of the river and surrounding area would commence first thing Sunday morning. Sunday, local volunteers from Quesnel Search and Rescue, the Quesnel RCMP and RCMP Air Services began coordinated search efforts of the area. The male was located by RCMP and Search and Rescue shortly after 11 a.m. as he was approaching an ice jam approximately 25 miles north of Quesnel. Search and Rescue officials

reported the presence of ice jams the size of small vehicles further upriver and successfully diverted him away from this potentially hazardous and fatal situation. Once on shore, the man said he spent the night along the river after realizing the distance was farther than he anticipated. Fortunately, he was prepared with a survival kit, food, blankets and clothing allowing him to survive the below freezing temperatures. The fact he had a planned route with a predetermined destination and arrival time allowed searchers to better focus their efforts. Quesnel RCMP remind members of the public to

be well prepared for any unforeseen circumstances when doing any back country recreation. Always ensure you are well equipped with food and survival gear, and that family and friends are aware of your route, your final destination and anticipated arrival time. Be mindful cell phone coverage is generally not available in most back country locations. Consider carrying a personal GPS tracking device similar to those used by back country skiers and snowmobilers. Quesnel RCMP thank the local representatives and volunteers from Quesnel Search and Rescue.

BUSINESS

Holmes has you hypnotized DANIKA M. HÉBERT Observer Reporter Do you want to quit smoking or lose weight, but don’t feel motivated? Clinical hypnotherapist Karen Holmes can help give you that extra push you need to reach your goals. Although Holmes has been working in the self improvement field for more than 15 years, hypnotism is her newest accreditation. “I was working as a life coach and kept seeing people who couldn’t reach their goals,” she said. “I kept seeing clients who weren’t seeing results and didn’t want to put the work into it. “It was frustrating, for them and for myself, so I looked into hypnotism.” Holmes found an accredited school in Surrey and took the hypnotherapy course. “I went on the fast track, because of all my previous training,” she explained. “Instead of it being a 10–month course, I crammed it all into one month.” Holmes hopes to show clients that hypnotherapy is nothing like stage hypnotism. “I found that when I came back from my course and started talking to people about it, they didn’t really have a lot of

knowledge about it,” Holmes said. She added most people think of hypnotism strictly as stage hypnotism and don’t realize there’s a clinical counterpart. The way clinical hypnosis works is the hypnotherapist helps you tap into your subconscious mind. “We all have these filters in our conscious mind, which filter out all the important information from the not so important information” Holmes said. “We still get all the information, we just don’t pay attention to it and my job is to bring that information out.” Holmes also said most people feel they won’t be in control of their own actions during hypnosis, but she explained her job is just to be your tour guide, not give the answers. “Since it’s coming from you and not from me, that’s where the change begins,” Holmes explained. “That’s how you know, inside, that’s the truth and that’s why it works so well.” I asked Holmes to put me under hypnosis to be able to write of my own experiences. She put me under a very relaxing hypnosis, I wasn’t even able to open my eyes. My experience with

Health and Community Services Expo slated for March 31 Do you have questions about your health? Want to know more about local services? Find the answers at the Quesnel Health and Community Services Expo, which runs March 31, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. at the Quesnel & District Arts and Recreation Centre. Visitors can sign up for comprehensive health screenings, listen to talks by experts or ask questions about improving health and wellness at a number of exhibitor booths. This year, the Quesnel Child, Youth and Family Network joins a partnership between Leisure Services and Northern Health to expand the Expo to include more information about local community services. “The Quesnel Child, Youth and Family Network believes that health can be measured in many ways. We are proud to be a part of this Expo so

we can share with the community the wide spectrum of services that our Network partners have to offer,” Patty Kimpton, Network Chair said. “The Expo provides our community with comprehensive health screenings and health and wellness information at a convenient location,” Diane Rogers, Leisure Services Recreation Manager said. “This is a great opportunity for all of us to get our loved ones to have a screening and spend some time learning about how we can improve our health.” Visitors can sign up for Northern Health’s Comprehensive Health Improvement Screening Clinic with registered nurses and a physician. This year Northern Health has revised their screening program. Along with heart health risk screening which includes on-site blood pressure, cholesterol, blood glucose test-

ing and screening for lifestyle risks, they have added goal-setting and a complete health check up using an evidencebased, confidential and secure web-based program. The web program will give you a tool for health maintenance for your lifetime. Anyone can sign up but people over 40 or who have a family history of heart disease or diabetes are encouraged to sign up. A $10 fee covers the cost of the cholesterol/blood glucose test. According to Margie Wiebe, Primary Care Nurse and Primary Health Care Developer from Northern Health, “there is no substitute for having your own family doctor and getting regular checkups but the Quesnel Health Expo can supplement your personal health maintenance through low-cost risk screenings because early detection is the most important factor for

reducing heart attacks and for improving outcomes for all health conditions.” Presentations will include Self-Care for the Caregiver by the Alzheimer’s Society of British Columbia at 1 p.m. and a Healthy Cooking Demonstration by the Complete Health Improvement Project (CHIP) Program at 2 p.m. For more information or to register for Northern Health’s Comprehensive Health Improvement Screening, contact 250-9928200. OPINIONS Hypocrites

D

isgusting and backwards come to mind when discussing the upcoming Miss Universe Canada pageant in May. Not only are these types of bikini-clad, stiletto-sporting events degrading to women, they’re now discriminating against contestants. Vancouver native Jenna Talackova was the quintessential participant when she was selected among 65 finalists for the 2012 competition, held in Toronto this May. That is until last Friday when she was disqualified. Why? Because she was born a male. “She did not meet the requirements to compete despite having otherwise stated on her entry form,” a Miss Universe Canada release states. “We do, however, respect her goals, determination and wish her the best.” The release fails to specify what requirements Talackova fails to meet. Miss Universe Canada contestants must meet a basic requirement of being a Canadian citizen and between the ages of 18 and 27 to compete. They also must not be married, pregnant and have to fill out a more comprehensive form if they meet the basic requirements. Talackova has been vocal about her past and has tweeted that she is not “giving up.” And she should fight the ruling. But what’s more is these types of contests that focus more on how a woman looks in a bathing suit rather than self improvement are demeaning, old-fashioned and... slightly creepy. However, if Talackova wants to participate and meets the requirements, whether she was born a man or a woman shouldn’t make a difference. –Autumn MacDonald, Observer

Payroll control and the BCTF B

oth NDP leader Adrian Dix and his education critic Robin Austin have recently tried to sell the media a fictitious story about the party’s successful history of negotiations with the B.C. Teachers’ Federation. With the ritual combat between the BCTF and the B.C. government flaring once again in early March, Dix bragged to reporters that the last time he was involved in teacher talks, it resulted in a 0-0-2 wage settlement. That was in 1998, when Dix was working for then-premier Glen Clark. The real 1998 story is useful, because then as now, the B.C. government was in a financial squeeze and looking at a huge set of negotiations with government unions in health and other sectors as well as education. Glen Clark, an exindustrial union organizer, was known for pushing negotiators aside and taking control of hot files. The premier’s office took the lead in teacher talks, trying to set a strong precedent for low wage settlements similar to today’s “net

Tom Fletcher

B.C. Views zero” mandate. The B.C. Public School Employers’ Association, representing the school districts, was marginalized and treated with the same disdain that the BCTF still reserves for them. And the result was an agreement where the union bartered higher wages for hundreds more positions and other benefit gains. This was one of the key mistakes that led to today’s showdown over class size and composition. Once trustees got a look at the premier’s 1998 deal, they refused to sign. For the first and only time, the government had to legislate the settlement on school boards. The BCTF membership endorsed the 1998 deal by a large margin, and it did indeed set the tone for other union settlements in the late

with “an equivalent process of good faith consultations or negotiation, then the legislation might not be an interference with freedom of association….” Bill 22 was written with this decision in mind, reasserting the government’s control over the payroll with a $165 million fund for special needs and a mediator to demonstrate those “good faith consultations.” University of Victoria business professor Ken Thornicroft noted last week that ceding control over class size to the union amounts to delegating authority over spending to someone who is not elected. The legality of that will no doubt be examined in the BCTF’s next courtroom assault on the provincial treasury. It’s an important comparison for voters. Which party is better able to represent the public interest in hardball negotiations with 300,000 unionized employees? 1990s. Press reports at the time put the total cost of this supposed wage freeze at an 11-per-cent increase in the provincial payroll. Before I get into the court battles that followed after the NDP government was dumped, there is a business principle here. One of the first things I had to learn as a private sector manager is that if you don’t control your budget, you aren’t really a manager. And no one who lets authority over staffing levels slip away can possibly control their budget. Control over staffing levels is what the NDP let slip to the BCTF in 1998. And it is what the B.C. Liberals took back in 2002, with legislation that removed class size and composition from bargaining. In the constantly repeated BCTF rhetoric, this was the “illegal stripping” of union contract terms that was struck down in April, 2011 by the B.C. Supreme Court. A closer reading of Justice Susan Griffin’s decision shows that she gave Education Minister George Abbott an out. If the province replaces staffing level bargaining

Clean it up Editor: I would like to know why is there no where to shop for clothes, shoes etc here in the City of Quesnel, except for Walmart, and a few places in the downtown core that are too expensive for people on a budget. Where is the tourism for Quesnel? What is our mayor doing to build new growth for our city. Maybe come July for Billy Barker Days, but that is the extent of it all. I see there are alot of

empty buildings with no new places to shop! What are the police doing for the drug trade here also. I took a taxi home the other night (welfare night) and the driver said that he watched our RCMP stopping drivers for going over a little on the speed limit, but yet the driver must have gone to these drug houses at least a dozen times. We need new growth for our city, and to clean it up! Judy Fullerton Quesnel

How clear the line... Editor: There are two points I would like to make regarding two recent letters to the editor; one written by Marguerite Hall and the other by Penny Calvert. Calvert’s attempt to rebut Hall’s letter by stating “her letter sounds like someone...” confounds me. What is meant by, “sounds like someone”? This posture is simply personal conjecture. Secondly, I think Marguerite

Why shouldn’t homeowners burn yard waste? A

pril is almost here and we are all getting our yards cleaned up for spring. Before piling your yard waste on the burn pile consider this: Burning leaves and other yard waste creates air pollution. When leaves or lawn clippings burn, large amounts of particulate matter is released. Particulate matter is especially harmful to our health. It is difficult to get yard waste dry enough to burn quickly and efficiently and as a result, smoky, smouldering fires are created. One small fire isn’t too much of a problem, but multiple households burning on a given day can cause significant amounts of smoke in

a neighbourhood. Toxins such as hydrocarbons and gases like carbon monoxide are also released in smoke. Additionally, backyard burning can start

st

structure fires and forest fires, even when well-tended. There are a couple of options besides burning leaves and yard waste. Composting creates a rich additive to gardens (see below for an easy method).

Leaves can also be raked, and then mowed over several times to chop them up. They can be left right on the lawn or spread on gardens as a mulch. For flower or vegetable beds, put down a two to three inch layer of chopped yard waste. This will help the soil retain moisture, keep weeds from sprouting and assist with keeping soil temperature constant. Leaves and other yard waste can also be taken to the municipal landfill. There is no charge for small amounts (pickup loads or less). Separated material is put aside in an area reserved for yard waste where it will eventually break down (but is not actively composted). If you feel like burning your spring yard waste is your only op-

tion, there are a few things you can do to minimize the effects: • be aware of bylaws (the City of Quesnel does not allow burning of yard waste without a permit) and provincial open-burning regulations; • avoid burning when an inversion is occurring; • never burn plastics, tires, toxic materials or other

garbage; • make sure material is dry and do not allow the fire to smoulder. Garbage Bag Mulch One of the easiest ways to create fantastic mulch is to use a garbage bag. Shred the dry leaves thoroughly using your lawn mower. Then place the shredded material and lawn clippings in a black garbage bag

(black will help keep the contents warm, speeding the process), along with a few handfuls of soil and/ or manure (contains helpful microorganisms.) Moisten the mixture with water – it should feel like a wrung-out sponge, and then just wait. To help speed the process, shake the bag once in awhile to mix things up. In a few months the leaves will have transformed into a great material for adding to flower and vegetable gardens. It can be used as a top-dressing or dug into the soil. Organic chemistry lights his fire

Dr. Mark MacLachlan was awarded the prestigious Steacie Memorial Fellowship for his work in organic chemistry. Elizabeth Varty photo, UBC

Quesnel’s own wins $250K prestigious fellowship ANNIE GALLANT Observer Reporter

M

ark MacLachlan remembers the first experiment that set him on a path to his current career, supramolecular chemist. “It was in Mrs. Murray’s Grade 3 class at Red Bluff elementary school,” he said. “It was mystery powders. We had to figure out what they were.” He remembers using a magnifying glass, testing the substances’ solubility in water and tasting (including plaster of Paris.) “It was my first taste of chemistry and that simple school room experience led to iridescent glass film research and the Steacie Memorial Fellowship.” MacLachlan was awarded the $250,000 fellowship in late 2011 and will spend the next two years advancing his research of the iridescent glass film project. After completing elementary and secondary school in Quesnel, he headed for UBC’s first year sciences program. “I always loved science and math right from

elementary school and always did well,” MacLachlan said. He admitted when he first entered university he was open to all fields including the potential to become a doctor or a dentist, however in his second year MacLachlan soon realized he was most interested in chemistry. “I felt I had more talents in chemistry by that time,” he said. “You begin to discover the amazing world of understanding matter and creating new substances.” He explained chemistry is a lot like cooking. “We learn about the ingredients and how they combine to create new dishes for the scientific menu.” After completing his bachelor of science degree in 1995, MacLachlan began working on his Ph.D. at University of Toronto in materials chemistry. “Materials chemistry can be any number of tangible things, however I was working on new magnetic materials, specifically new magnetic plastics for my Ph.D.” He found his passion in materials chemistry with the idea of making things

no one else has ever created before. “I knew I wanted to be a researcher once I completed my Ph.D.” Similar to a medical internship, MacLachlan went on to complete his two-year post-doctorate at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in organic materials. With several applications sent out, he accepted an assistant professorship in organic chemistry back at his alma mater, UBC where he did some lecturing and lots of research. He achieved tenure in 2007 (based on an evaluation on productivity and achievements) and full professorship in 2011. He was still lecturing some but the bulk of his time was spent on research. (For all the Big Bang Theory fans, MacLachlan, who loves the wildly popular TV show, said those characters have similar jobs to his and yes, he admits he’s met people similar to those characters, even Sheldon.) For the past three years, MacLachlan’s research group, which includes undergrads, graduate students and post-

doctoral students have worked on many, many chemistry projects, most running concurrently, however, the iridescent glass film discovery was actually an accidental discovery. “When you look at a butterfly or the shell of a beetle, they reflect light because they’re iridescent,” he explained. “The reason they reflect is because of the supramolecular structures. “It was during a forestry research project on pulp where we were looking at nano crystalline cellulose with its rod shapes (which organize into helix-like structures) we discovered we could re-create this structure in glass.” Iridescent glass film has potential applications for coatings for glasses or windows that block ultraviolet light or reduce heating and air conditioning requirements. And so with the accidental discovery and subsequent ongoing research, MacLachlan name was put forward by the UBC chemistry department for initially an internal review where six scientists are chosen to be forwarded for possible

selection of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada’s Steacie Memorial Fellowship. The fellowship recognizes some of the nation’s most promising scientific talent and honours excellence in young scientists (those within 12 years of receiving their doctorate.) “I figured I didn’t have a chance,” MacLachlan said. “I was surprised my nomination made it out of the UBC internal competition.” However, a phone call, just three days before Christmas 2011, informed MacLachlan he had been chosen to receive one of the Steacie fellowships. “I was shocked. This is a career-changing award,” he said with a big smile. “For the next two years I will concentrate on the iridescent glass film project.” The fellowship provides money, time and prestige (its the highest award a young scientist can receive in Canada.) Despite his resemblance to Leonard Hofstadter of Big Bang Theory fame, at 38, MacLachlan feels his career is on track and his

personal life is great. He’s married to an organic chemist and together they have two children. When asked if he’s kept up with his graduating classmates from the Correlieu class of 1991, MacLachlan said yes, in particular with one fellow graduate, Paul Cyr, who also works at UBC in the technology transfer department and also has his Ph.D. in organic chemistry. In looking back over his formative school years in Quesnel, MacLachlan ponders those who have made a difference in his life. “I credit one teacher who inspired me, although there were many wonderful teachers through the years, I’d have to say my high school English teacher,” he said. “Mr. DeVries made us think and be creative. People don’t see science as creative but that’s the essence of science, nothing is discovered until scientists get creative. And, surprisingly, as a scientist I spend 80 – 90 per cent of my time reading and writing.”

Child-friendly designation coming to businesses in Quesnel ANNIE GALLANT Observer Reporter Selena Weiers would like to see every public business and office in Quesnel become child-friendly. “Becoming childfriendly doesn’t have to be expensive or time-consuming,” Weiers said. “It can be as simple as ensuring your business has clear signage for the restroom or putting a step stool in the restroom for smaller ones to wash their hands.” She also said becoming childfriendly can be interpreted as disabled-friendly, senior-friendly and stroller-friendly. Weiers is a childfriendly community facilitator and is visiting local businesses with information and encouragement to consider becoming child-friendly certified and proudly displaying the star which tells others of their child-friendly compliance. Child-friendly compliance has some common practices to all businesses including clear signage to restrooms; flip-down child’s toilet seat installed on one or more toilets; sink installed at child’s height or sturdy step stool provided; play

There’s a list of other efforts businesses can make to become childfriendly and Weiers would love an opportunity to discuss this with business operators. And Weiers added there are some real benefits to becoming a child-friendly business. “In a child-friendly business, customers

with children feel more comfortable,” she said. “And comfortable customers means increased customer loyalty and that can mean more sales. “Family customers usually stay longer and this again, could mean more spending per visit.” And Weiers was also quick to point out it’s not just parents that are buying for and with children. “Grandparents,

aunts, uncles and family friends are spending their money with children and if they like what your business has to offer, they’ll tell others.” The child-friendly initiative is funded by United Way and Ministry of Children and Family Development and administered through the Quesnel Child, Youth and Family Network, specifically Success By Six. Success by Six is not a program but a community collaboration with the vision to build the capacity of parents and communities to support children aged 0 – 6 to become healthy, safe, secure, successful learners, socially engaged and responsible. The primary role of Success by Six is to raise the profile of the importance of the 0 – 6 years. Child-friendly designations at public businesses is one of the many ways the Quesnel Child, Youth and Family Network and Success by Six are working towards its vision.

“I’m looking forward to working with Quesnel shops and businesses to assist them in becoming childfriendly,” Weiers said. For information on the child-friendly certification and how you can apply it to your business, contact Weiers at 250-9912821 or email her at bearman@telus.net.

CAPSULE COMMENTS with Lee-Anne Williams B.Sc. (Pharm)

It’s revealing to put a number on the heart benefits of exercising. There was a “study of studies” done recently on the amount of exercise needed to benefit the heart. That number is 150 minutes per week. This resulted in a 15% reduction in heart attacks. Couch potatoes who started to exercise benefitted most. It’s important to check with your doctor before starting an exercise program. Breastfeeding a newborn infant has many positive effects on the baby and the mother. One new idea being investigated is that breastfed babies have less of a chance of becoming obese. The link between obesity and breastfeeding isn’t totally proven but it may be another incentive to breastfeed for at least 6 months. Nine out of ten foot operations are performed on women. The cause of the foot problems is primarily the type of shoes women wear. These foot problems include bunions, hammertoes and neuromas (swelling of a foot nerve due to tight-fitting shoes). Sometimes, just changing to a roomier shoe will relieve the discomfort. It may be hard to choose between comfort and style but your feet will be happy. Our kidneys are marvellous. They filter all the blood in our bodies (7-8 litres) about 20-25 times each day. That’s 180 litres each day. Besides removing waste products from our body, they provide materials that regulate blood pressure, stimulate red blood cell production and help maintain good bone health.

Thunder roars in bantam playoffs JONAS GAGNON Quesnel Observer The Bantam Thunder came back from a 4-1 deficit in the final game of the provincials to win an exciting 6-5 victory over Terrace and take the banner. “It shows the character of the group when it’s 4-1 in the second, then 5-1 in the third and they don’t drop, they go harder,” Brian Kozak, the Thunder’s head coach, said. Though the score by the end of the second was lopsided, the play was anything but. “It was probably the highest tempo game we played all year,” Kozak said. Though Quesnel scored first, Terrace got some lucky bounces in the first two periods that managed to get by Brady Powell, Thunder’s goalie. While at the other end the Thunder couldn’t manage to finish, including an empty net opportunity that slid wide of the mark. Terrace’s fourth goal late in the second period, netting a three point lead for the Terrace team, got to Quesnel. “You could see our guys went down a bit psychologically,” Kozak said. But the lull didn’t last beyond the second period. The team regrouped in the dressing room between periods and in the third they came out of the gate strong, and despite an early goal

by Terrace to put the score at 5-1, nothing fazed the Thunder. Jessie Roach was the first to step up for the Thunder in the third period. Three minutes into the third, not one minute after Terrace seemed to nail Quesnel’s coffin with their fifth goal, Roach managed to slip one by the Terrace goalie and open the floodgates for his team. He followed up with two more goals, scoring every shift he was on for three consecutive shifts, giving Roach a hat trick.

Capitalizing on that momentum, Brayden Dale scored his second of the game to tie the game at five. Finally, with just under three minutes in the game, Keith Redden broke the tension by splitting the defense and scoring the go-ahead-goal. The Thunder were in great condition for the tournament and were able to play solid hockey, never slowing the pace, even in the last period of a grueling tournament. It’s this conditioning that kept them in the final game. “Terrace just tapered off condition-wise

and we just dominated,” Kozak said. It was this conditioning that Kozak credits for getting the team through a grueling tournament, including two, two-game days and another comeback against a three-goal deficit earlier in the tournament.. The Thunder played admirably, managing to get through the tournament with a 6-1 record that was unmatched by the other 10 teams in the tournament. “The kids were fantastic,” Kozak said. The grueling tournament, and tenthhour comeback, relied on the dedication the team brought to practicing and keeping their conditioning up for the duration of the season. “Right from the start of the year they were willing to do what needs to be done,” Kozak said. That willingness translated into extra ground training for the year, and extra ice time before the tournament to make sure they were in top condition. The Thunder gelled as a team early on in the season. It’s this teamwork that has buoyed them since the very beginning, and which Kozak credits for allowing the team to come so far. “They came together as a team and believed everyone would do their jobs,” said Kozak. In the playoffs that resulted in a team that didn’t have to rely on one or two stars or a single line of scorers. “Everyone contributed,” said Kozak.

JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter Kyle Tessier, hailing from Quesnel, B.C., took a win in his first ever boxing match, against William Charlie of Boston Bar. “It was great,” Tessier said, “I managed to win by TKO (technical knock out).” He attributes his success to the focus and determination he brings into the ring. “Some of my friends said when I stepped into the ring, the look in my eyes, I looked like a completely different person.” Wally Dorn, coach of 2 Rivers Boxing Club where Tessier trains, agreed. “Being that it was his first match, so many boxers in their first match go into a survival instinct and throw wild aimless punches but Kyle didn’t do that. He was calm and did

what he needed at the right time.” Going into the fight, both Tessier and Dorn knew that Charlie was shorter, with a shorter reach and rightly determined he would rely on body shots. “Our plan was to throw some good, crisp jabs and rights,” Dorn said. The plan succeeded and Tessier managed to use his jabs to keep the shorter Williams out and head off the body shots. In the third, Tessier’s better conditioning started to show through, with Charlie flagging. Tessier managed to capitalize on Charlie’s slowing and kept up the pressure. With the edge in the third round, Tessier sent Charlie down for two eight counts, a TKO in junior boxing. Dorn was impressed by the calm, unflag-

ging performance. “It was almost a mechanical performance,” Dorn said. For Tessier, the fight was truly enjoyable. “I actually enjoyed the fight,” Tessier said. “It’s just you and your opponent, no team mates to rely on.”

With the first fight under his belt and a growing affection for the sport, Tessier plans on taking on more bouts. That means making sure his body is up to the challenge. His physical condition helped him take the last match, but his cardio training remains the hardest part of the fight for Tessier. Without keeping up with his cardio workout, Tessier’s afraid of ‘gassing out.’ “Nothing’s worse than losing a fight, not because of skill or strength, but just because you’re out of energy,” Tessier said. 2 Rivers Boxing Club will host Rumble #16 on May 5.

In Memoriam

- Male Tan & White Puppy found on Mathews Rd. Barkerville Hwy.

George Glenn May 10, 1933 ~ March 20, 2011 He had a nature you cold not help loving And a heart that was purer than gold And to those who knew him and loved him His memory will never grow cold. His charming ways and smiling face Are a pleasure to recall. He had a kindly word for each And died beloved of all. What would I give to clasp his hand, His happy face to see, To hear his voice and see his smile, That meant so much to me. A thought of sweet remembrance, A memory sad and true, The love and sweet devotion, Of one who thinks of you. As we loved you, so we miss you; In our memory you are near. Loved, remembered, longed for always. Bringing many a silent tear.

- Male Neutered Cat senior - white and orange well fed cat found on Hydraulic road.
