Diane Thorp
Which community do you live in? North Saanich
What business are you involved in? For how long? A textile artist for close to 40 years, I have designed, made and sold textile art and hand woven garments, both through traditional channels and online. I am now re-focused on my art, which I sell through galleries and at shows. For the last 17 years, I have also supported my husband John in our international consulting business.
What community initiatives are you involved in? I stood down last year after seven years chairing the Sidney Fine Art Show. I am currently vice-president of the Community Arts Council of the Saanich Peninsula and was on the selection committee for both the Beacon Park sculptures and the Seaside Sculpture Walk. I chair the Sidney Community Development Commission, which has been a challenging but hugely rewarding experience. I also help John with the ArtSea Festival, which he initiated and has chaired for the last two years. Why is it important to be active in changing your community? Because art matters – literary, performing and visual arts are vital to community living and contribute to the overall health
of the community. We are fortunate to live in an area that includes a large number of very talented artists and it is important to provide opportunities for them to share their work with the community.
volunteers help year after year. We need to better manage volunteer work, continue to attract new volunteers and make sure individuals don’t get burnt out.
What is your proudest achievement? The success of the Sidney Fine Art Show would be my proudest achievement. The show is an unbelievable volunteer effort that provides a tremendous opportunity for artists to display their work in a world-class setting and brings thousands of visitors to the area, which is great for local businesses. As a result of its success, the show has also been able to make a significant financial contribution to the many programs of the Arts Council.
What is the next project, initiative or challenge you’d like to tackle? After the Sidney Fine Art Show being my number one priority for many years, I am now concentrating on my own work. I am experimenting with new techniques. One of these involves working with my son, currently the data artist in residence at the New York Times. We are working on a joint project to create designs based on genetic codes, which I weave on the loom. We envision this to be a small but illuminating art installation. It’s a lot of fun.
What role do women play in making our community a better place? I think women are very sensitive to the needs of the community. We are good at multitasking while managing to stay focused on the goal. Many women have the ability to just get on with what needs to be done without being overly concerned about public recognition or status. What is one thing this community is lacking, in your view? We place enormous reliance on our volunteers and we need to recognize and support them better. Many of the same
What have your experiences taught you about life, or about people? I learned so many skills working on the Sidney Fine Art Show. There were so many things to do that I had never done before – on occasion I would feel pretty nervous. It really built my confidence to learn how much people wanted to support the community and how pleased they were to provide whatever support they could so that the show would succeed. Perhaps the big lesson here is not to let fear of failure stop you from trying – you just may find that it is the secret to success.

Dorothy, Jenni, Nicole and Celia Michell
What business do you own? For how long? We are part of Michell’s Farm, a family run business that has been operating on the Peninsula for over 100 years.
What role do you believe your business has had in shaping our community? Michell’s Farm has been proud to provide a variety of fruits and vegetables to the community, contributing to the community health and the buy-local movement. How is the business of farming changing on the Peninsula? Farms in the area are evolving by growing a diverse range of produce to meet community demands and changing food trends. Our farm has expanded over the years to accommodate the growth in our family and the younger generations’ interest in
agriculture.
What is your proudest achievement? Our proudest achievement is the ongoing venture of our family farm. With the sixth generation now involved in the business we feel good about our future in food production and having the ability to be a contributing part of the community. What role do women play in making sure businesses thrive? Throughout the years on our farm women have had a strong presence in every aspect of the business from fieldwork to bookkeeping to retail sales. We feel it’s not surprising to see a woman in any career, taking on any role. What is one thing this community is lacking, in your view? One thing that might improve the com-
munity is a broader public transit route. This area has so much to offer and easier accessibility would give the opportunity for people to come out and experience the Peninsula. What is the next project, initiative or challenge you’d like to tackle? We are currently working on expanding our herd of pasture raised cattle. We acquired some cattle a couple years ago and have gotten a strong response from our customers so we are hoping to grow our herd to be able to provide more quality beef, and soon pork, to our clientele on a regular basis. What have your experiences taught you about life, or about people? We’ve learned that people enjoy being able to connect and interact with the faces behind a business.

Her daughter and co-owner, Janet Henly enjoys the partnership with her mother, “I truly feel that with her long term experience and my creative talents, we create a beautiful shopping experience that we are both very proud of.” Janet and Shirley carefully hand-pick all of the items in the store, making sure that each one is crafted with care, quality and attention to detail. The Dancing Orchid boasts a wide variety of charming and unique items that can't be found anywhere else in the area. Tania Schibli, General Manager Born and raised in Powell River BC, Tania Schibli moved to Victoria eleven years ago with her family. Elizabeth May
Which community do you live in? Sidney
What business do you own? For how long? I don’t! I am your MP, which means I work for every business and citizen in the riding. I am a very busy employee. What community initiatives are you involved in? Sidney by the Sea Rotary, local environmental initiatives, local food projects, parish activities of St. Andrew’s Anglican Church. Why is it important to be active in changing your community? I think it is important to protect what is best in our communities. Sometimes that means working to protect what we have; sometimes it means working for
change. Being active in the community is essential to ensure we love the place we live. What is your proudest achievement? It is hard to choose between having wonderful kids (one daughter and three step-children – all now out in the world and contributing to making the world a better place) and (guess?) the honour of being elected as your MP. What role do women play in making our community a better place? Women volunteer at higher rates than men. Women are more likely to take initiatives that reflect compassionate community goals – but many men do as well. What is one thing this community is lacking, in your view? We need more affordable housing and
investments in convenient, efficient mass transit. What is the next project, initiative or challenge you’d like to tackle? I would love to find a way to use my role as MP, and first Green MP, to network at all levels to promote sustainable solutions in Saanich-Gulf Islands. I would love to link investors with entrepreneurs, matching social capital initiatives with volunteers who want to make them work. What have your experiences taught you about life, or about people? We are all different, and we are all the same. At the essence of each one of us is a person who cares. It is the rarest of people who does not, as a primary focus, want to do the right thing. Finding the good in everyone is a joy.

Muffet Billyard-Leake
Which community do you live in? North Saanich
What business do you own? For how long? Muffet & Louisa since June 1986. What community initiatives are you involved in? Sidney Merchants Co-operative and the newly proposed branding activities planned for Sidney. Why is it important to be active in changing your community? We need to promote our beautiful town within and beyond our borders. Sidney and the Saanich Peninsula are world class destinations, and we should all be proud to promote them as such, while at the same time maintaining the wonder-
ful sense of community that we have here. What is your proudest achievement? My children. What role do women play in making our community a better place ? I feel that it takes the effort of everyone to make a community a better place and women are, of course, at least 50 per cent of that effort.
What is one thing this community is lacking, in your view? To be truthful, I am sure that there are things in Sidney that I am not aware of, and so I do not want to say that they are missing. I know and understand the retail community and I feel that we are well on our way to establishing ourselves as being
pretty complete – we just have to tell more people about ourselves. What is the next project, initiative or challenge you’d like to tackle? Spending more time participating in the establishment of Sidney as a community that everyone will enjoy, whether visitor or resident. What have your experiences taught you about life, or about people? Life is good, people are amazing and everyone has a story. If you are prepared to give to life and people, most of the time you get back twofold. Rose Wilder Lane said, “Happiness comes into our lives through doors that we don’t even remember leaving open.” I try to leave the doors open to all possibilities.

Meet Robyn. Robyn Dosouto, Store Manager Some people take years to discover their career path and passion; for others, it arrives bright and early. So it was for Robyn Dosouto, manager of Thrifty Foods in Sidney. Robyn initially came to Thrifty Foods’ Saanich Centre location for her Grade 9 work experience. Once there, she loved it so much, she never left! Appreciating the friendly, family atmosphere at Thrifty Foods, Robyn was hired as a cashier, where she enjoyed the camaraderie of her fellow employees, and the friendly familiarity with customers. “It’s was a lot of fun and I was attracted by everything Thrifty Foods stood for. I never expected to stay; they just made it too hard to leave!” Over the coming years, Robyn would work her way up to front end manager, then an assistant store manager, then a Retail Operations Assistant, liaising between five locations and the vice-president of Thrifty Foods. Most recently, though, she has been a store manager, becoming the company’s second woman to head a Thrifty Foods store, following colleague Lisa Trotter as Thrifty’s first female store manager at Admirals Walk. “There are more and more opportunities for women every year,” she notes. Robyn thrives on the responsibilities of running a store, enhancing the shopping experience, supporting the community and helping Thrifty Foods stay fresh and modern for its customers. “It’s so challenging – I love that part of it; I love starting something, seeing it through and seeing the results of it.” The family atmosphere at Thrifty Foods is one of the reasons so many staff members stay with the company for their careers. For Robyn, recently returned from maternity leave after welcoming her second child, “Thrifty Foods is all about families and so am I, and being a Thrifty Foods employee allows me to be a great mom and a career woman.” Starting out, “I liked how they balanced students’ school schedules, then later in life, when I had my children, they made it so easy to have that work-life balance,” says the mom to two busy boys, age four and 17 months. When she’s not in the store, family keeps Robyn and her husband busy at home and in the community as their active boys take after their mom in their love for new challenges. “Sunday is family day, so we all spend the day together and usually end with a movie. It’s all about family.” Thrilled to be back at the helm of the Sidney store, with its incredible staff and loyal customers, “I feel spoiled,” Robyn says. “It’s something that’s very, very special and they make it so easy to come to work every day!”

Sherry Lemay & Susan Kae Veale Susan Kae Veale, owner and operator, of Simply Cremations and Funeral Services in Sidney, would like to sincerely welcome Sherry Lemay to Simply Cremations and is very happy to have found her. Sherry has worked as a licensed Funeral Director for over 10 years in the Victoria area. An “almost native” of Victoria - her family moved here from Edmonton when she was five. Sherry attended Savory Elementary and Belmont High Schools. After graduation, she entered the work force, eventually becoming a Safeway Deli Manager. She then decided to retire to raise her daughter and two sons and become a Foster Parent, fostering 56 children in all over a nine year period. “As well as my own kids, I usually had four foster children, most under the age of two,” she says. Can you imagine it? And yes she is still in touch with a couple of them. Sadly, Sherry lost her daughter, Mercedes Rae Clarke at a young age. However, one of her sons has married and presented Sherry with a granddaughter, now age six. As a result of her mothers death in 2001, that’s when Sherry decided to become a Funeral Director. Sherry is also the liaison in the Jaguar Club (JCNA), she says with a giggle “I’m not that interested in cars, I just like the people.” Sherry and Susan make time to “de stress” with hot yoga here in Sidney. Susan and Sherry look forward to serving all families with dignity and care in their time of need. If you have any questions or concerns, please call Susan or Sherry at 250-656-5555.

Leslie Gentile
Which community do you live in? Brentwood Bay
Which groups do you manage? For how long? I have been a member of the Brentwood Revitalization Committee for the past 15 years. I am also a member of Brentwood’s Music in the Bay, another group that organizes local concerts.
What community initiatives are you involved in? The Brentwood Bay Festival, Music in the Park, and the Music in the Bay concert series. For 12 years I have headed up Music in the Park, a series of seven outdoor concerts in the summer. Last year, our audience hit about 1,000 and we know we are attracting people from the Greater Victoria region, as well as our own community. For the past five years I have spearheaded presenting Barney Bentall’s Grand Cariboo Opry, which we hold in Saanichton and Victoria each fall as a food bank fundraiser. To date, we’ve raised $37,700 for the Mustard Seed and Sidney Lions Food Bank.
Why is it important to be active in changing your community? I want to live in a strong, vibrant community with great events going on. If you want that to happen, I believe that you need to get involved. If you want things to be better, roll up your sleeves and do it. What is your proudest achievement? Brentwood Bay’s Music in the Park. It has become such a huge part of this community and that it is really humbling. I hear from people all year about how much they love it and look forward to it. What role do women play in making our community a better place? My grandmother was arrested in her youth for organizing a protest march for the right to vote and my mother caused a stir as the first female machinist in B.C., and built submarines during the war. Although she was the shift foreman, she was paid less than the men, simply because she was a woman. Women are at a great place in Canadian society. Now our role is to work with men to model an equal and just society to others who aren’t there yet.
What is one thing this community is lacking, in your view? I would love to see a permanent stage in Pioneer Park and I would love to see theatre in the park, for example. Not that I’m volunteering to organize it. What is the next project, initiative or challenge you’d like to tackle? We presented Barney Bentall’s Grand Cariboo Opry in Victoria for the first time last year. Our next challenge is to get that Victoria audience to grow and support the event for the food banks. On a personal level, I would also like to finally record that CD of my own music that I keep talking about. I think I’ll have to call it The Best of Intentions. What have your experiences taught you about life, or about people? I have performed for little kids, done prison concerts, music therapy, and worked as a touring songwriter-musician. I’ve presented shows with some fairly major performers. Music can break down barriers, forge bonds and create a sense of community. It touches people in ways we will never truly understand.
