Taxes in Langley Township will rise by 2.95 per cent in 2012, council decided in a 9-0 unanimous vote on Monday. The jump in taxes will pay for increased operating costs in a number of areas, along with the hiring of eight new firefighters, one RCMP officer, and renovations to firehall 6 to make it compatible for full-time firefighters. Council will not proceed with a planned 0.5 per cent tax increase for transportation and roads maintenance, and a 0.5 percent increase for a capital infrastructure renewal fund. The latter will be discussed when the 2013 budget is being prepared. Council still has to formally pass the 2012 budget. Monday’s vote was to receive a report on the budget and input from the public, and to decide on specific items within the budget. A five-year financial plan and appropriate bylaws will come forward at the April 16 meeting. Councillor Kim Richter said she wants to see the components of the tax increase explained to taxpayers when they get their property tax notices. Administrator Mark Bakken said that can be done in material that accompanies the tax notice. A 0.7 per cent tax increase will go towards hiring the eight new firefighters, with another 0.45 per cent to finish the firehall 6 renovations. The additional police officer will cost 0.05 per cent extra. “I support the eight new firefighters, in the name of public safety,” Richter said. “I want people to know how much we are
putting into public safety.” Councillor Bob Long said it was good to add the eight new firefighters in the 2012 budget, because “if you do it in smaller bits, it comes up each year.” “It’s most efficient to introduce eight firefighters now, instead of over several years,” said Councillor Bev Dornan. Councillor Steve Ferguson noted that spending more money on public safety means less money somewhere else. He said he would have liked to see the transportation and roads and capital replacement funds proceed, but “we have to work within our means.” Councillor Grant Ward said the fact that the transportation and roads maintenance funding isn’t going in the budget means “the potholes we see now likely won’t be repaired as they ought to be.” Councillor Charlie Fox said the public input into budget issues jumped dramatically in 2012, with 96 people attending two open houses, as compared to 28 last year. A staff report noted that “the substantial increase in attendees can be mostly attributable to the attendance of Township of Langley firefighters.” The International Association of Fire Fighters, local 4550, which represents Township firefighters, has been vocal about the need to hire more firefighters, to ensure there are always four-man crews responding to fire calls. Another 100 people filled out a public input response form. The Township’s financial plan calls for 2.95 per cent tax increases in each of the next four years, through to 2016.
Aldergrove pool supporters told ‘not yet, but soon’ By MIRANDA GATHERCOLE Aldergrove Star
A new Aldergrove pool and recreation centre will not be completed by 2014 as enthusiasts hope, but it will be conceived sometime in the future, according to Langley Township council. Joanne Nicolato, chair of the
recently-formed Aldergrove Pool Committee, spoke to Township council Monday night to make her case for why the Aldergrove community needs a new pool and recreation centre. Nicolato, who was featured on the Million-Dollar Neighbourhood reality TV project filmed in Aldergrove

this past year by the Oprah Winfrey Network, is a strong believer that Aldergrove needs this new infrastructure to bring the community together. Once a large critic of Aldergrove, since being part of the Oprah Winfrey Network show, Nicolato says she has found a new love and pride for her community.
“I found myself bursting with community pride. I went from not caring at all to now wanting to do whatever I could to support our businesses and to bring back life to our community,” she said to council. The Aldergrove Pool Committee is currently handing out surveys to calculate exactly how much support

Critics argue against new Aldergrove cell tower By MIRANDA GATHERCOLE Aldergrove Star
Cell towers do not belong near wildlife-rich areas, say three concerned Langley residents. Petrina Arnason, Patricia Tallman and Jane Deglint believe the environmental impacts of a new cell tower proposed for Aldergrove are too severe for it to be built. Cascadia Tower has put forward a plan to build a new cell tower on a private property on 240 Street near 58A Avenue that backs onto a large ravine where the Salmon River runs. Although not recognized by Health Canada, the three residents say there are many studies that show the radio frequency (RF) energy emitted by cell towers harms animals and humans. Tallman, a former instructor of civil and environmental engineering at McMaster University and an environmental/animal rights activist, believes it is the smaller organisms in that ecological area that will be impacted most. “They’ve noticed deformities in frogs, birds mating behaviours are disrupted and their eggs are damaged. It’s affecting their DNA and also weakens their immune system. With bees they have found that if they put cell phones in the bee hives they lose their navigational skills and can’t find their way back,” she said. Tallman points to a recent study directed by Dr. Asad Rahmani for

Cell phone providers are now facing “Electromagnetic radiation the challenge of building new towers can exert an aversive behavioural to keep up with the increasing conresponse in rats, bats and birds such sumer demand for wireless services. as sparrows. Therefore, microwave When it comes to human impacts,
Health Canada says the rate of RF energy emitted from the towers is too low to have negative effects on human health. The radiofrequncy fields emitted from cell phones and cell phone towers is non-ionizing radiation, similar to AM/FM radio and TV broadcast signals. This type of energy cannot break chemical bonds in human bodies, unlike ionizing radiation which is given off by X-ray machines. According to a statement on the Health Canada website: “Health concerns are sometimes expressed by people who live or work near cellphone tower antennas located on towers, poles, water tanks or rooftops. Yet, the consensus of the scientific community is that RF energy from cell phone towers is too low to cause adverse health effects in humans. In fact, RF exposures from cellphone towers are typically well below Health Canada’s exposure standards.” The World Health Organization practices the same policy, also stating that there are no severe impacts from cell towers on human health. But for Tallman, Arnason and Deglint, it is the smaller animals they fear are at the greatest risk. “Health Canada is only concerned with the thermal impacts of the electromagnetic radiation (EMR) on humans. We’re much bigger, so we are not going to see the impacts,” Tallman said. “But what they are finding is that it
is non-thermal effects that are causing destruction to the DNA of biological organisms. And of course these nonthermal effects are occurring at lower frequencies. So Health Canada does not recognize that because they only look at thermal effects on humans. All these things are happening at much lower frequencies so smaller mammals are not on their radar,” Tallman said. “It’s like a canary in a mine,” said Arnason, daughter of former Township councillor Muriel Arnason. “I think this is something that is really getting to a critical point because more and more people have smart phones and all these new devices. The more you encourage urbanization, the more demand it is going to bring. And if you are looking towards how to service your customers, policy needs to be there.” A public hearing will be held before any final decisions on the project are made. “Our focus is to bring awareness that there is a cellphone tower that is going to be put in the middle of a very rich ecosystem,” Tallman said. “This is a gem. It’s unthinkable to put something here like that. Look at this place.” More information on the project is available at http://cascadiatower. com/site-list and for more on cellphone towers visit the Health Canada website

Aldergrove soccer enthusiasts are keen to turn a gravel practice area into an synthetic turf field, but Langley Township council wants more information before giving the plan the green light. Reid McDonald appeared before Township council Monday afternoon, suggesting that the Township not proceed with a $250,000 parking area, which is part of a $1.7 million project to build a new turf field at Aldergrove Athletic Park. He said that, with that money, funds raised by the community and an estimated $103,000 saving in the current project’s budget, there would be enough funds to pay $436,214 to convert the current gravel field to synthetic turf. However, council members grappled with the financial implications of the request. They tried to figure out just how the proposal
would work, and how much the community would need to raise. McDonald said about $135,000 has been pledged already to convert the gravel field to turf. Al Neufeld, manager of parks design and development, said that because a contract has already been awarded, the Township would not likely get all the $250,000 back if it cancelled the parking lot addition. “With charge orders, we don’t always get full value credit. We usually would get 60 to 80 percent back.” Councillor Charlie Fox already had a notice of motion on the soccer field on the agenda. He agreed to combine his motion, calling for staff to prepare a report on the feasibility of the request to move the parking lot funds over to the turf practice field project, with another from Councillor Bob Long. Councillor Kim Richter asked
about the distribution of synthetic turf fields in the Township. Neufeld replied that there are synthetic turf fields at McLeod Athletic Park and adjacent to the Langley Events Centre. The one in Aldergrove is under construction, but there are none in Walnut Grove or Brookswood. “They have all-weather practice fields, We would recommend synthetic turf in Brookswood and Walnut Grove first. There is less desire to play or practice on gravel as new synthetic fields become available,” he said. Council agreed to get further information from staff about the financial implications of turning the gravel field to synthetic turf, and to look at how it fits in with other field priorities. Members of the community who attended council promised they would help raise more funds for the project.

Only a lucky few have made the cut past the first round of auditions, and now the top 25 semi finalists in the Langley Has Talent contest are preparing to bring their talents to the stage on April 21 to show the community that they have what it takes to put on an amazing show. They have a variety of different talents — singing, dancing, acrobatics, opera and even yo-yoing — but the one thing in common is their ability to entertain and perform. “It’s making the community aware and it’s true— Langley has talent,” said Peter Luongo, chair of the Langley Has Talent committee. Presented by the four Rotary clubs of Langley and Aldergrove, the talent show was created one year ago as an opportunity for Langley residents of all ages to perform onstage in an effort to raise awareness for the need of a performing arts centre in Langley. According to Luongo, Langley is the only community in the Lower Mainland without a proper theatre. “The event is doing exactly what we hoped,” Luongo said. “It’s making people aware that we need a theatre in this community. And there is talk about it now that was non-existent before.” Participants are vying for $2,500 cash, industry prizes and the opportunity to perform at events in Langley such as the Canada Day celebrations and the International Festival. There were 25 fewer auditions than in the inaugural season last year, however the quality of the acts was much higher, said Luongo. “We were extremely impressed with the overall level of talent this year,” he said. “The hope of the committee is to attract folks who are taking

He made it to the semi finals. their talent that they’ve developed and put it onstage because they are ready to do so. “That said, we have a variety of levels of experience from people hoping to make careers out of their talents to one person who is performing onstage for the first time at the semi-finals.”
There was more variety of talents, no dance groups and more young performers who tried out this year in comparison to auditions last year. There were also more pop numbers sung this year, whereas last year the singing genre was dominated by country music. Some were even return acts from the year before, hoping their talents have improved enough over the past year to take them to the top. “All along what we’ve hoped for is a variety show. Throw back in time to the old variety programs that we would watch on a Sunday night, such as the Ed Sullivan show, which are now being replicated under the names American Idol and America’s Got Talent. “The reason we chose the Langley has talent model rather than the idol model is because we didn’t want to have just singers. We didn’t want it to be all vocalists, we want it to showcase a variety of talents,” Luongo said. “We want to make the community aware for the need for a theatre. And the theatre won’t be just for singers. It will be for dance groups, for entertainers and for anyone with a talent to come out and show it off onstage. “As Rotary continues to sponsor this event on an annual basis, we are still hopeful that we will get the ventriloquists, the acrobats and the comedians because that’s all talent.” The semi-finals are being held Saturday, April 21, 7-9:30 p.m. and finals are Saturday May 5, 7 - 9:30 p.m. live at Christian Life Assembly, 21277 56 Ave. Tickets are $20 for semi-finals, $20 for finals or $35 for both shows. Tickets can be purchased online at www.langleyhastalent.ca or at the Langley Times office, 20258 Fraser Hwy.

It happened … one day last weekend… I was driving down our street with Bill, my husband who has dementia, and he said, “that’s our place there on the right.” Rather dryly I responded ,“yes I know. I’ve been there many times.” “You have?” he asked. At that point I turned to look at him directly to see if he was kidding me. He wasn’t. His face was straight and serious. “Do you know who I am,” I asked. “No,” he said. “Who are you?” I can’t describe how I felt at that moment. Panic-stricken I guess. Friends had been asking me if Bill still recognized me and I had been shrugging it off with a quick “of course.” I wonder if I’ve been in denial about his dementia for the past two years. As we pulled into the driveway I decided to resort to one of my two regu- Pauline Buck lar defence mechanisms: humour and faking it. I chose faking it. We came in and unloaded a couple of groceries. Because it was a wet and chilly day, I put on the fireplace and we sat down in the living room to work on our jigsaw puzzle. After a few minutes of silence Bill said, “You’re a very nice person.” I nodded a sort of thank-you. Then he picked up the TV clicker and tried to dial out with it (he often gets it mixed up with the phone). “Who are you trying to call?” “Pauline. It’s not like her to not call on her way home.” Now I was really in a panic. I finally said, “I am Pauline, your wife. We’ve been married for 22 years.” The look that came back at me was absolutely incredulous. “You are? We have? Why didn’t I know?” So I went back to silence and found a few more jigsaw puzzle pieces that fit. Hell, I needed something to fit! After dinner, Bill started it again, saying he really loved his wife and if it weren’t for her, he would be quite interested in me because I’m so nice. But he wanted me to know that we could never have anything together because he’s happily married. Realizing it was almost bedtime, a wave of fear washed over me. If he doesn’t think I’m his wife, and he’s so faithful to her (I did smile to myself at that thought), then where are we going to sleep? Would he try to push me out of bed? I stayed as normal as possible, got into my pajamas and threw my clothes into the laundry basket, as usual. Bill said, “Pauline does all our laundry. She’ll wonder about those clothes in there.” “Oh, I’m sure she’ll be fine with it,” I said. The actual showdown came when I got into bed. He stood in the middle of the room and asked what I was doing. I said I was going to sleep, to which he replied, “but you can’t sleep there. That’s my wife’s place.” Taking a big gamble I said, “I know you don’t understand this, because you have a disease in your brain and you can’t help it, but I am your wife. I am Pauline. If you don’t want to sleep with me, you can go to sleep in the spare room. I don’t plan to give up my bed.” “Oh,” Bill said and came to bed quietly (Phew!) The next day nothing more was said on the subject. I didn’t know who I was that day and I was afraid to ask. Today I’m back to being Pauline. For how long I wonder? -Pauline Buck is an Abbotsford blogger and columnist at www.homeontheranch.info

With the ritual combat between the BCTF and the B.C. government flaring once again in early March, Dix bragged to reporters that the last time he was involved in teacher talks, it resulted in a 0-0-2 wage settlement. That was in 1998, when Dix was working for then-premier Glen Clark. The real 1998 story is useful, because then as now, the B.C. government was in a financial squeeze and looking at a huge set of negotiations with government unions in health and other sectors, as well as education. Glen Clark, an ex-industrial union organizer, was known for pushing negotiators aside and taking control of hot files. The premier’s office took the lead in teacher talks, trying to set a strong precedent for low wage settlements similar to today’s “net zero” mandate. The B.C. Public School Employers’ Association, representing the school districts, was marginalized and treated with the same disdain that the BCTF still reserves for them. And the result was an agreement in which the union bartered higher wages for
Payroll control and the BCTF
hundreds more positions and other benefit gains. This was one of the key mistakes that led to today’s showdown over class size and composition. Once trustees got a look at the premier’s 1998 deal, they refused to sign. For the first and only time, the government had to legislate the settlement on school boards. The BCTF membership endorsed the 1998 deal by a large margin, and it did indeed set the tone for other union settlements in the late 1990s. Press reports at the time put the total cost of this supposed wage freeze at an 11-per-cent increase in the provincial payroll. Before I get into the court battles that followed after the NDP government was dumped, there is a business principle here. One of the first things I had to learn as a private sector manager is that if you don’t control your budget, you aren’t really a manager. And no one who lets authority over staffing levels slip away can possibly control their budget. Control over staffing levels is what the NDP let slip to the BCTF in 1998. And it is what the B.C. Liberals took back in 2002, with legislation that removed class size and composition from bargaining. In the constantly repeated BCTF rhetoric, this was the “illegal stripping” of union
contract terms that was struck down in April, 2011 by the B.C. Supreme Court. A closer reading of Justice Susan Griffin’s decision shows that she gave Education Minister George Abbott an out. If the province replaces staffing level bargaining with “an equivalent process of good faith consultations or negotiation, then the legislation might not be an interference with freedom of association….” Bill 22 was written with this decision in mind, reasserting the government’s control over the payroll with a $165 million fund for special needs and a mediator to demonstrate those “good faith consultations.” University of Victoria business professor Ken Thornicroft noted last week that ceding control over class size to the union amounts to delegating authority over spending to someone who is not elected. The legality of that will no doubt be examined in the BCTF’s next courtroom assault on the provincial treasury. It’s an important comparison for voters. Which party is better able to represent the public interest in hardball negotiations with 300,000 unionized employees? Time to stop squeezing the blood out of TransLink stones Editor: Isn’t it about time TransLink admitted they have backed the wrong horse? Right back in 1986 when the first section of track was opened on Terminal Avenue for Expo 86 they were told by the experts of the day that the Skytrain system would never pay for itself. And 26 years later TransLink is still trying to break even. The quandary TransLink find them-selves in is obvious: if they raise fares to the amount necessary to recoup operating and capital costs through “user pay” the ridership will drop off dramatically and they may in fact collect even less revenue. This means the business/financial model used to justify adoption of the Skytrain
system was faulty out of the gate. Someone did a snow job on the people of Vancouver. TransLink realize this and that is why they are trying every trick in the book and then some to suck money out of the Lower Mainland residents to try (and I mean try) to make Skytrain pay. The truth is it will never pay for itself. They have admitted as much in their statement that just to keep the system operating, never mind the Evergreen line costs, they need to raise another $30 million. It’s time to do what other cities in the world have done: abandon Skytrain and move to surface transportation. Fraser Valley has a viable rail track system for commuter traffic, not only
to Vancouver but to other communities in the Valley and all the way to the coast. Super buses can be a part of the new transportation system. Electrifying as much as possible and moving away from gas and diesel engines. Decentralizing transfer points (they don’t have to feed Skytrain anymore) so they spread the traffic rather than concentrate it, will all lead to increased ridership and decreased pollution. Then TransLink can stop squeezing blood out of the stones that are already crumbling under the strain of added levies and taxes. It’s time for someone at TransLink to have the stones to stand up and admit Skytrain is a loser. Colin Atkinson, Aldergrove

In the early 1900s, things were tough in Aldergrove. The community was a scattered collection of houses in amongst rough bush and broken terrain. Around then agricultural development started and Aldergrove over the next 10 years became a centre of agriculture in southern British Columbia. The farmers were 50 per cent farmers and 50 per cent foresters. One such man doing this kind of clearing was William Loucks, Senior, a founding member of the Aldergrove Agricultural Association. After years of tree removal and development by settlers to the area, little settlements began to crop up. Some were near the railroad: Sperling, Warwhoop, Coghlan, County Line, Beaver River, Jackman, Lombard, Rand and Bradner. Some were along the Old Yale Road route (now known as Fraser Highway): Otter, Shortreed, Aberdeen and Pinegrove. Travel between the communities was limited, travel outside the Aldergrove area was a major expedition. Prior to 1912, farmers such as William and Minnie Loucks of Patricia had to travel from the hamlet of Patricia to New Westminster, sleep in their wagon for the night, travel the rest of the journey to Cambie Street in Vancouver and sell their produce then spend two days travelling back to Patricia. AGRICULTURAL ACHIEVEMENTS In 1908 Jesse Throssell migrated to Patricia (south Aldergrove area) from England and over the next many years, tried to develop a turkey with more breast meat. He succeeded and his creation would eventually be named the broadbreasted turkey. Up until that time, turkeys in the USA and Canada were raised for colour and size, but not neccesarily for their breast meat. His progress was charted, measured and discussed every time he showed his turkeys at agricultural fairs and won prizes. This process started at the one in his own area (Aldergrove) and the word spread. Soon customers from all over North America were beating a path to his door and buying turkeys from his hatchery. He was called the Turkey King and received scrolls from the Department of Agriculture and the B.C. Poultry Industry Council, commemorating his contributions to the industry. In 1910, Fraser Valley Nurseries Co. Ltd., received an official letter from R.M. Winslow, chief government horticultralist, stating that the demonstration orchard for south of the Fraser Valley would be located on a portion of their property. The letter stated that Aldergrove was selected by reason of the soil being representative of a large area of the country, which made for a very good fruit growing proposition.

Lithograph of an Aldergrove apple orchard, circa 1910, from “The Apple Lands of Aldergrove.” “The increasing interest in improved methods and excellent facilities provided for the holding of meetings is making Aldergrove one of the best places in the province for the government’s educative campaign,” reported the Farmer’s Institute, Nov. 19, 1910. As with the turkeys, the Aldergrove Fair and the Agricultural Association became places to display and discuss these new agricultural developments. FORMATION OF ORGANIZATION On the evening of February 29, 1912, seven people gathered for a meeting from the surrounding communities around the region, with the formation of what was to be called the Aldergrove Agricultural Association. No minutes or other books were kept, so much of the archives rest in the meticulously maintained cash receipt books. The first Fair was held in September of 1912 in the rented halls called The Orange and The Bedford. A grant of $100 was received from the Provincial Government, Ministry of Agriculture, and $50 from Langley Council. If you can imagine, in 1912 the challenges involved in seeing your neighbour, or the next neighbour, and especially another town or hamlet along the way, wasn’t a daily or even a weekly task, and meeting multiple neighbours was rare except for socials and events within town. The Aldergrove Fair not only provided a venue for gentlemen like Jesse Throssell to display his turkeys, and expert government leaders to display the farming viability of produce and vegetables via demonstration farming, but also an incredible way to bring all the communities together from the entire region. Aldergrove had no Town Council, so the Agricultural Association Meetings and Fairs were one of the very few opportunities to discuss matters of local concern. The Fair also encouraged teachers of Aldergrove, Patricia, Otter, South Otter, and Aberdeen schools to have their students participate and even set up gardens at the
schools, and they received grants for such things. Over the years, the Aldergrove Agricultural Association contributed generously to the town — for example, Aldergrove Park (now called Jackman Park), the baseball diamond lights, and the completion of the Aldergrove Elks Hall basement (now a Vineyard Church). The book, “The Place Between” lists the Aldergrove Agricultural Association as being the oldest viable organization in Aldergrove, and its long history of connecting communities and people is certainly a significant reason for that. TOWARD THE FUTURE I have a bumper sticker on my wall that reads “………………” It seems that sticker sums up the future value of the Agricultural Association and reflects part of its history too. A century ago agriculture was an essential part of surviving and so became an integral part of everything people did. For the farmers, if you couldn’t grow food then you had no money. For farmers and non-farmers who had little money, growing your own food was the best way to survive. As time passed our appreciation of agriculture diminished with the increase in industrialization of agricultural production, and with the general prosperity of people who could easily afford all the “food” they wanted. Now we have turned a full circle. People are coming to appreciate the value of traditional agriculture (with less or no chemical helpers), and in times of global economic hardship are (slowly) learning the value of growing your food. The Aldergrove Agricultural Association is looking forward to the next 100 years, with a Fairground serving as a flagship for local agricultural appreciation and education. Aldergrove’s Studio One Dance Center’s students have enjoyed a successful season. Young Amanda Solheim, 12, was chosen out of hundreds of competitors at Chilliwack Music and Dance Festival to be the junior ballet provincial representative this June in Nanaimo. This is her second year in a row of being chosen for this honour. She performed three different ballet solos at the festival this year. The Studio One Dance Power teams attended dance power competition in Burnaby in March and the studio did
extremely well. After five days of competition the teams ended up having six dances in the power championships, with the final show for top high score. In division 1 the Junior group had two dances in the top five, and then their lyrical group went on to win the entire division, taking home top prize. In division 2 Studio One had four out of the top five dances from their Intermediate group and they went on with their jazz dance to win the entire division 2 category. Sts’ailes sign on to 60-year Hemlock resort expansion
Why is coming to the new H&R Block location a smart move?
By KURT LANGMANN Aldergrove Star
A newly signed partnership to develop a 6,000 hectare expansion of the Hemlock ski resort is a result of three years of negotiations between the Sts’ailes first nation and Langley entrepreneur Ralph Berezan. But over the 60 year term of the contract Sts’ailes Chief Willie Charlie said it will bring changes that will transform the way his people live. For this reason Chief Charlie emphasized that “the benefits we were able to negotiate are going to equal or be greater than those impacts.” The Sts’ailes Healing Centre hall on Morris Valley Road was filled to capacity for the signing ceremony on March 9, and guests included representatives of other first nations, provincial government ministries and neighbours of the Sts’ailes. The ceremony followed Sts’ailes customs and included traditional songs and dances, but there were also good-natured

Langley businessman Ralph Berezan and Sts’ailes Chief Willie Charlie formally signed a 60 year partnership contract to develop a 6,000 hectare expansion of Hemlock ski resort. exchanges of jokes and barbs between Charlie and Berezan, demonstrating the respectful fondness for each other that the two men have built over the three years of negotiations. The proposed development area is massive at 6,000 hectares and will extend the existing Hemlock ski resort to the western shores of Harrison Lake. In addi-
tion to the new mountains opened to skiing and a web of ski lifts, there are plans for a marina, hotels, golf courses, riding stables, zip lines and more. “It’s a development that’s going to take 60 years (to complete),” said Berezan, noting that the application is still awaiting final approvals from senior levels of government. “The Sts’ailes are not
the only government I have to report to. The ministries are watching me like a hawk and have to give me their approvals — that’s what I’ve got my lawyers for,” said Berezan, to laughter from the audience. In the meantime, Berezan has committed to replacing one of the older lifts at Hemlock with a new quad chair lift by the fall of 2013. “It’s a start towards this project,” said Berezan, who also presented a $100,000 cash gift to the Sts’ailes Legacy Fund that day, “as a token of our appreciation.” Chief Charlie stressed “the magnitude, the enormity” of the impacts of “this very significant milestone for the Sts’ailes... it will have impacts forever on our people and once it starts we can’t get it back.” The benefits are, first and foremost, jobs and opportunities, said Charlie. As a year-round destination, Hemlock is projected to provide 22,000 jobs over the 60 years. “I go to the school and I tell young people you can be whatever you want to be in our own territory, in this one development,” said Charlie. “Also the stewardship policy, the heritage policy, the environment policy is incorporated in the contract, to help us maintain the integrity of our territory. “We are always willing to roll up our sleeves and do our share of the work, to stand up for what we think is right and not expect something for nothing. We’re going to be transparent, very clear and sometimes very loud,” said Charlie.

OBITUARIES
Wilfred (Wilf) Morgan Watkins July 31, 1916 - March 15, 2012
It is with great sadness that the family of Wilfred Watkins announces his passing on March 15, 2012, at the age of 95. He is predeceased by his sister Mavis and is survived by his wife Elaine, daughter Barbara, son Bryn and his wife Bonnie, grandsons Glenn, Kyle and Evan. Wilfred has been a resident of Aldergrove for the past 27 years. He was a volunteer with the Aldergrove Heritage Society, and actively involved in supporting his friends at SR Collision. He also enjoyed provoking thought, discussions and yes, arguments at various morning coffee shops around the Aldergrove area. This was an important part of his life. Wilfred was born in Drumheller Alberta and moved to Vancouver when he was just 7 years old. Wilf was a veteran of WWII, where he served as an air force Flight Lieutenant with the RCAF. He and Elaine were married in England in 1944 and moved to Vancouver shortly afterwards. Wilf graduated from UBC in Civil Engineering and worked for many years with the Department of Indian Affairs and various engineering firms throughout the Vancouver area. He and his partners started their own consulting business and kept very busy for years before eventually settling out on his own. He retired in 1985 and he and Elaine became Canadian Snowbirds and spent almost 20 years traveling all over North America in their 5th wheel trailer. A celebration of life will be held on March 31, 2012 at 2:00 PM at the Twin Firs Club House 27272 32 Ave., Aldergrove, B.C. Flowers gratefully declined in favor of donations to the Aldergrove Heritage Society. 3190 271 Street, Aldergrove, British Columbia, Canada, V4W 3H7.
