Quartet helps heart and stroke foundation
Submitted Baker Street, Cranbrook’s only barbershop quartet, have harmonized across town on February 14th to raise funds for the Heart & Stroke Foundation and also to send a message to loved ones on Valen-
tine’s day. They were successful in raising $770 in one day. Also, a cheque for $128.33 was presented which was the bank balance of the Kootenay Harmony Chorus which, unfortunately, has now folded.

LESS HYDRO R ecently we have completed a project that will reduce
our hydro impact by over 25%. This was a major undertaking and the project lasted 2 months. We installed more than 1000 energy efficient light bulbs and fixtures featuring cutting edge energy saving electronics. The over $90,000 price tag has already been paying dividends and the energy savings is astounding. Our plan, going forward, is to use that savings to bring innovative products and solutions to our customers. Like our state of the art design center and newly planned galleries. It will also allow us to maintain our community involvement with our tents. You will see us in more places this year. Watch for us!

COMMUNITY PREVENTION EDUCATION CONTINUUM C.P.E.C.
What does CPEC stand for? by Paul Komer
Our communities have ¿gured out that supporting and being involved in prevention education for youth in a continuum stretching from Kindergarten to Grade 12 mirrors the adage: It Takes A Whole Community to Raise a Child!
Our community has created “Community Prevention Education Continuum” (CPEC) to ensure that children experience asset building through out their school years. CPEC was formalized 6 years ago. Many of the elements of CPEC had been around for a decade. What was

missing was a framework to connect all the good work that agencies were doing and the understanding that throughout the childhood years, safety and health messages were important discussions to have with youth. The common goal was to create an environment in which children could reach their potential. Thus, service providers, businesses and churches had some ownership in creating a safe community. The results are positive: alcohol and drug use has decreased in school aged children and youth. East Kootenay Addiction Services Society (EKASS) is an active participant of CPEC. Under the CPEC umbrellas, we offer school and community based programs for children aged 5 to 19. Our agency’s goal is to increase protective assets in children and youth, as well as the community The Community Prevention Education Continuum happens in partnership with our whole community and includes the following agencies: Ankors, Canadian Mental Health Association, Child and Youth Mental Health, MCFD, Family and Youth Centres, RCMP and School Districts 5 and 6 plus many volunteers and various programs.

Earth Hour is coming this weekend BC Hydro is encouraging British Columbians to join other Canadians in support of Earth Hour 2012 by turning off their lights on Saturday, March 31 from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. Last year British Columbians saved 117 megawatt hours of electricity and reduced the provincial electricity load by 1.8 percent – the equivalent of turning off 7.8 million 15-watt compact Àuorescent light bulbs for the hour. To date, 87 municipalities in British Columbia, from Armstrong to Vancouver, have con¿rmed their participation in this year’s Earth Hour. In 2011, millions of people in more than 135 countries participated in this symbolic event to show how easy it is to save energy every day. The annual Earth Hour global event is hosted by WWF, the World Wildlife Fund. BC Hydro supports Earth Hour by encouraging customers to turn off unnecessary lights and electronics to conserve power and show support for climate change reduction efforts. British Columbians can extend Earth Hour into every day through simple conservation actions including: Hanging clothes to
dry; Turning down the
heat; and choosing en-
ergy-efÂżcient products.

3 Facts You Need To Know About... Good news for Kootenay communities 1.
Last week was a good week for many of our East Kootenay Communities. The Province distributed several Community Recreation Grants, a unique program for small communities where the Province pays 80% of the cost for projects that improve opportunities for people to be physically active.
2.
Canal Flats received $800,000 to upgrade its hockey arena; Wasa received $70,000 to build an outdoor rink; Fernie received $350,937 to put towards its Max Turyk soccer field; Sparwood received $400,000 for an energy retrofit to its Leisure Centre, and Cranbrook received almost $280,000 to extend its trail system to link the Rails to Trails project to Rotary Way. These are actually investments in healthy living.
3.
The Province also distributed $15,000 to local agencies through its Civil Forfeiture program. The money for this grant program comes from the illicit gains of crime and is given to worthy causes. The Elk Valley RCMP received $5,000 and Summit Community Services received $10,000 for its antidomestic violence programs. It was a pretty good week here in the East Kootenay.

eration. From Vancouver Island to Castlegar, the trail is nearly complete, however much work is needed to secure a route east into Alberta. The Trans Canada Trail is currently formally designated in the east Kootenays in Cranbrook (2000) along Ro-
tary Way and Isadore Canyon Rail Trail and the City of Kimberley (2006) through the Kimberley Nature Park, into the Platzl and down Mark Creek ending in Marysville. “Dedicating the NorthStar Rails to Trails as part of the Trans Canada Trail Network will provide the opportunity for a much needed connection from the existing portions of the
Trans Canada Trail in the City of Kimberley to the rest of the Kootenay Region,” says Trails BC president Al Skucas. “With the backdrop setting of the BC Rockies, this already popular trail will surely become a highlight segment of TCT.”

Attorney general says no further reference in polygamy case Minister of Justice and Attorney General Shirley Bond today released the following statement on the B.C. Supreme Court polygamy reference case: “After reviewing Chief Justice Bauman’s comprehensive and compelling decision on the constitutionality of the polygamy section of the Criminal Code, government has decided against a referral to a higher court. “Legal counsel have advised me they are satis¿ed his decision
will enable police and prosecutors to act with authority in investigating and prosecuting criminally polygamous relationships. While the opinion of a higher court may be more persuasive in case law, the government does not believe a referral decision is necessary. “The true victims of polygamy are the women and children this trial court decision protects. Ultimately, the Province has weighed these considerations against the impact of further court
proceedings on people who have experienced polygamy ¿rst-hand and - even though the referral would be based only on the existing record and not further testimony - decided not to go forward. “The assistant deputy attorney general for the criminal justice branch has now expanded the mandate of special prosecutor Peter Wilson, QC, to include possible polygamy prosecutions. Mr. Wilson will conduct an independent charge assessment review of
any information brought forward from the ongoing RCMP investigation and determine if, based on British Columbia’s established charge assessment guidelines, the evidence warrants proceeding with polygamy or other charges. “I want to express my ongoing appreciation to the people who assisted us in making the case to B.C. Supreme Court that women and children deserve protection from the profound harms associated with polygamy.”

TRANSPORTATION

through the Kootenays
Transportation week This year Transportation Clubs International will be sponsoring National Transportation Week (May 29-June 7) with a special thought to all the ef¿cient networks that get us our goods every day. Canada’s economy depends on an ef¿cient network of roads, railways, airports, and maritime shipping centres. These systems keep importation and exportation rolling smoothly, and they ensure that manufacturers and consumers receive the goods they need. Both the private sector and the government of Canada invest in these transportation systems to encourage technological developments that will advance the industry. Innovation ensures productivity and competitiveness. That’s why Canada places a strong focus on developments in the transportation of people and goods. Innovations include more ef¿cient business practices, improvements
in mass public transportation systems, developments in “clean” transportation for highway travel and in cities, and innovative business practices. One new technology is the high pressure direct injection fuel system for long-haul diesel truck engines, developed by Vancouver’s Westport Innovations. With support from Sustainable D e v e l o p m e n t Technology Canada and using research from the University of British Columbia, this fuel system promises to reduce emissions from the long-haul transport trucks that criss-cross the country to deliver goods. Without needing to change the engine, the system allows natural gas to be used in a diesel system — natural gas burns cleaner and costs less in the long run. The new system is set to be tested on real trucks on Ontario highways as part of a twoyear trial.

Highway 95 will be widened this year The Province will be investing over $2 million this year to resurface and widen a portion of Highway 95, approximately nine kilometres south of Golden, improving the route for area residents, tourists, the forest industry and commercial transport vehicles along this important corridor. Approximately six kilometres of Highway 95 will be resurfaced between Nicholson Road and Horse Creek Road South. The existing narrow paved shoulders will be widened to two metres along this section, to improve safety for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians. “This project will improve the safety of Highway 95 near Golden, will create new jobs over the life of the project, and will ensure that this section of highway continues to meet the needs of local residents and other motorists,” said Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Blair Lekstrom. Portions of two local side roads will also be resurfaced. Those are: Moberley Branch Road - 2.2 kilometres (existing gravel surface to be paved) andCampbell Road - 1.2 kilometres. A $2-million contract has been awarded to Interoute Contracting Ltd., a West Kootenay company. Work is scheduled to get underway this summer and be ¿nished by the end of September. Over $1.2 billion has been invested in the Columbia-Kootenay region since 2001 to improve and maintain roads and bridges, expand transit, broaden cycling networks, expand airports and support community infrastructure improvements. This portion of Highway 95 is on the Province’s Hot Springs Circle Route.
Working in the transport industry Transportation is the moving of people and goods. Although modern technology has improved the ability of machinery to achieve this goal, it still takes people to make the system work. Have you ever thought about becoming a bus driver, a traffic manager or an aircraft maintenance engineer? Many great job opportunities await you if you choose a career in transportation, like the tens of thousands of people in Canada who proudly keep the transportation system running safely and efficiently. Within the individual modes, employment is constantly changing and evolving in the transportation industry. Airlines, shipping lines, railways, trucking firms and bus lines provide direct employment. In addition, governments as well as many industries provide transportationrelated employment. Take the construction

Canada’s vast open spaces mean that the transportation industry will be needing workers far into the future. industry for example. Nowadays, it is involved in road and railway building and repairs, and in airport, canal and pipeline development. Another good example is the manufacturing industry. All across Canada, companies are building cars, trucks, buses, locomotives, railcars, ships, airplanes and piping, thousands of tools and parts and the electrical and electronic equipment required to operate even the smallest transportation system.
Governments at the federal, provincial and local levels are also involved in transportation. The federal government is involved in policy development, research planning, and the assessment of new technology, environmental health, safety and many other areas. Provincial departments
are involved in roads, highways and trucking regulations, while municipalities plan and develop their local systems. So, if you’re at a time in your life when you have to choose a career or if you’re in the process of a career change, think about the transportation industry!

Local lodge wins TripAdvisor’s Travellers Choice award - yet again

A birthday party at the Elizabeth Lake Lodge. For the second year in a row Elizabeth Lake Lodge has won the TripAdvisor’s Travellers Choice Award in the category of best service and for the fourth year in a row the lodge has won in the category of best bargain There are 5000 hotels across Canada that are listed on Trip Advisor. If you ¿nish in the top 25 in any one category you are presented with the title. This is the ¿rst year it has been top 25 as in the past it always has just been top 10. On this years list we ¿nished fourth in the best bargain category and eighth in the best service category. “We are so pleased to have won this again. It is not only recognition of our consistency of service but it is also the most used online tool that travellers use,” said George Frietag, owner of the lodge.”As excited as we are we still like to put it into perspective. All the properties that win are not necessarily the most luxuriant or well appointed. It simply means that in each one of these categories these properties exceeded expectations by the widest margin. Meaning that next year the bar will be set just that much higher.” British Columbia dominates TripAdvisor’s latest rankings of the best hotels in the country. In the website’s 2012 Travelers’ Choice Awards, eight of the top 10 hotels are in B.C., most of them in Vancouver. That includes the No.1ranked L’Hermitage Hotel, a luxury boutique property on Richards Street near the city’s ¿nancial centre. The 60-room hotel, which opened in 2008, offers amenities including an outdoor heated salt-water lap pool and complimentary bicycles for touring the city. The Echo Valley Ranch & Spa in Clinton, northwest of Kamloops, also made the list, as did Abigail’s Hotel in Victoria and the Sonora Resort on
Sonora Island. The only non-B.C. hotels to crack the top 10 were Auberge Le Vincent and Auberge Saint-Antoine, both in Quebec City. “British Columbia appears to be a hotbed for great hotels,” TripAdvisor spokesperson Julie
Cassetina wrote in an email. “Winning hotels were determined using an algorithm that measured highest ratings by TripAdvisor travellers.” The website says the awards, which this year recognized 3,943 properties globally, are based on millions of

and most of the venues are not-for-pro¿t based that are accessible to the majority of the community-at-large. We are auditioning for volunteers to join us throughout the 2012
season. We don’t expect all face painters to be available for every venue – rather we are seeking individuals who can commit for our larger venues like the Kootenay Children’s Festival (Sat-
urday May 12/12) and Sam Steel Day (Saturday June 16) and Sunday in the Park (June 17). Contact Marion for more information at meunson@ktunaxa.org.

Gregarious Gardener by Top Crop Garden, Farm & Pet
The dirt on composting It might still take a while until the last patches of snow have disappeared from yards and gardens in the region, but the ground is starting to show through. Where some only see dead plants and bare soil, to gardeners it appears as a blank canvas they can use to create their masterpiece in the upcoming growing season. Having a good basis is the key to successful gardening. Healthy soil grows healthy plants and one of the key elements is organic matter. The easiest way of getting it into your garden is by composting. Organic material is broken down and nutrients released as the material decomposes. Compost is beneďŹ cial for the soil in many ways, including being a soil conditioner, a fertilizer, and vital humus that breaks up heavy clay and keeps the soil aerated and uffy. Composting as a recognized practice dates back to the early Roman Empire. Traditionally this meant piling up organic matter and letting it sit until the next planting season when it would be decayed enough to use in the soil. While requiring little effort, this method has been reďŹ ned over the years so less space is needed, pests can be controlled and nutrients can be used efďŹ ciently. There are many different designs for garden composters, from upright, column-shaped boxes to bee-hive looking domes and turning barrels and even worm-composting bins. The principles behind the process, however, are still the same. Take plant material, add water and aerate by turning regularly. Then let worms, bacteria and fungi do the work and break the material down. The key is to get a balance of carbon-rich (brown) and nitrogen-rich (green) materials to provide a breeding ground for beneďŹ cial bacteria to work at a rate that will heat up the pile. In that process water will be released as vapor (‘steam’), and the oxygen will be quickly depleted, explaining the need to actively manage the pile by turning regularly. The hotter the pile gets, the more often added air and water is necessary; the air/water balance is critical to maintaining high temperatures (135°-160° Fahrenheit) until the materials are broken down. At the same time, too much air or water also slows the process. The most efďŹ cient composting occurs with a carbon to nitrogen mix of about 30 to 1. Nearly all plant and animal materials have both carbon and nitrogen, but amounts vary widely. Fresh grass clippings have an average ratio of about 15 to 1 and dry autumn leaves about 50 to 1. In addition to a wide range of micro-organisms breaking down organic matter into compost, earthworms are a valued addition to every pile. They ingest partly composted materials and aerate the pile by digging drainage tunnels as they move through the compost. So keep things simple and natural, compost what you can and give those plants a healthy start. Till next time... happy gardening. Submitted by Margaret

Obituaries OBITUARY
OBITUARY Orest Edward Zirk – Obituary December 24, 1927 – March 22, 2012 Eddy was born at home near Tisdale Saskatchewan, and enjoyed his boyhood years in the farming community. He often told stories of the mischief he got into. One of them was of a time when he and his sister Helen, cut down a neighbour’s beautiful blue spruce and hauled it home to be decorated for Christmas. His father passed away at the age of forty five and Eddy, now a teenager, became the “man of the house”. He worked in a logging camp, as a Vancouver Island Coach Lines driver and a taxi driver to help support his Mom and sisters. It was a rainy day in Ladysmith when he picked up a pretty young woman who eventually became his wife of sixty two years. Eddy and Joan have four children and ten grandchildren. Ed worked hard all his life to provide for his family, with Joanie at his side. They returned to Cranbrook in 1970 to start a new company called Valley Propane and eventually purchased KaDe Cycle and Sports. He later sold that business and purchased M&K Plumbing and Heating, which he ran until his retirement. Because of his shared love of hockey with son Paul, Eddy became active in the Cranbrook Colts organization. One of the many jobs he took on for the team was installing radiant heat in the arena. He was a 50 year member of ACT/UCT, and a volunteer with the Cranbrook Lions Club and Moyie Community Association. He loved to have fun and his children have many fond memories of family fishing and camping trips. He really loved to have his family, friends and neighbours around him and took every opportunity to invite everyone to share in his enjoyment of snowmobiling, fishing, taking his grandchildren tubing and cooking wonderful meals. And oh yes……. he liked the odd cold beer. Here’s to you Eddy. We’re going to miss you! Ed passed away peacefully surrounded by his family. He is survived by his loving wife Joan, son Paul ( Colleen), daughter Mary Ann ( Ron Jenkins), son John ( Cindy) and son Brian ( Lori), sisters Eileen and Loretta ( Howard), grandchildren Nick, Michael, Lesley, Rebecca,Jon, Allura,Megan, Jenny, Lee and Taylor and many nieces and nephews. Last but not least, Jewel the much loved family dog. He was predeceased by his father John, Mother Ann, sister Helen and brother in law, Guy. Service: Saturday March 31, 2012, 2:00 pm, McPherson Funeral Services , 2200 2nd St. S., Cranbrook,B.C. Memorial Donations: Moyie Lake Community Association, c/o Alex McDonald, 3029 Westside Road, Moyie, B.C. V0B 2A0
John Mennie 1929 - 2012 We are extremely sad to announce that after a courageous 6 year battle with prostate cancer, John passed away peacefully at home with his loving wife and family by his side on March 25th, 2012. John was the eldest of 6 children born June 24th, 1929, to Alex and Josephine Mennie. Early life for John was a constant adventure as his parents moved from one remote wilderness camp to another, residing in such places as Camborne and Bayonne until he came to Kimberley at age 7 to begin school. John's love of nature was deeply ingrained from the beginning and some of the happiest times in his life were when his family began a logging company together. He continued in this endeavour until 1965 when he attended UBC to attain his teaching degree. His first assignment was at Mt Baker Senior Secondary in 1966 and there he remained until his retirement in 1984. John met the love of his life, Darleen, and married in 1956. Two years later they had their only child, Tammy, whom he adored. Together they enjoyed all the outdoor adventures one could imagine. John's next joy in life came in the form of his 2 grandsons with whom he shared his heart, his soul, and every moment of time that he could. They were inseparable. John was predeceased by his father, Alex, in 1962, and his 100 year young, amazing mother, Josephine, only 3 weeks earlier this month on Mar 5th. John is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Darleen, his daughter Tammy, and her husband Greg who was as much a son to John as John was a father to him. He is also survived by his two adoring grandsons, Thomas and James, and his five siblings, Bill, Peter, Nora (Nick), Ian (Brenda) and Claire (Don). John loved everyone, family, friends and colleagues, deeply and unconditionally. What appealed to him most were the simple things in life - hiking in the wilderness, fishing in a stream, listening to music, coffee with a friend, and most of all, visiting with his family. Quite simply... he enjoyed all that life had to offer as fully as any person could possibly do. A service for John will be held at McPherson's Funeral Home, 2200 - 2nd Street South Cranbrook, BC at 1:00 pm on Sunday, April 1st, 2012. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to BC Cancer Society, bccancerfoundation.com Arrangements entrusted to McPherson Funeral Service. Condolences for the family can be offered at: www.mcphersonfh.com
