NDP Leader Adrian Dix was let off with a warning after SkyTrain police caught him riding the transit system without a ticket on March 3. The incident came to light three weeks later after a Vancouver newspaper was tipped off by someone in the transit police, Dix told report-

ers at the legislature on March 26. Dix said he has ridden transit thousands of times, and always buys a ticket. He couldn’t produce one when transit police asked him during a random check of passengers, and the situation was “entirely my fault,” Dix said. He was initially issued a ticket for riding without paying, but was later told the

Former NDP MLA and now Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson was fined $173 after he was caught in 2007 riding SkyTrain for two zones while only buying a one-zone ticket. He rejected suggestions that his credibility was weakened by keeping quiet or by “apples and oranges” comparisons to his production of a fake memo in an effort to protect former premier Glen Clark in a 1999 investigation into a casino licence. Seedy Saturday super successful Heather Nelson Free Press

The Valley Room at The Lodge in 100 Mile House was crowded with people participating in the annual Seedy Saturday on March 10. It was co-hosted by the Horse Lake Community Farm Co-op (HLCFC) and the Community Kitchen. Tables, with information on everything from the meat co-op, beekeeping, worm composting, the benefits of saving seeds and more, circled the room. We had a good turnout, says HLCFC member Karen Greenwood.

PUBLIC NOTICE The District of 100 Mile House invites all residents to attend an open meeting to discuss the District of 100 Mile House Financial Plan for the years 2012 to 2016. The purpose of the meeting is to undertake a process of public consultation regarding the District’s Financial Plan. This meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 3rd, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. in the District Council Chambers located at 385 Birch Avenue (Fourth Street entrance), 100 Mile House, B.C. Teri and Darren Copp found the seeds they were looking for at Seedy Saturday on March 17. The annual event, held at the Valley Room in 100 Mile House, was full of displays, information tables and offered a seed-saving workshop, as well as a seed exchange. “Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and all the presenters were kept busy answering questions.”

A seed workshop designed to build on and increase seed knowledge was given by Mojave Kaplan.

It’s about taking responsibility for getting seeds, saving and adapting them for this area, says Greenwood. “The seed exchange table was busy throughout the day, and in fact, all the tables were busy. There was an area for children to learn how

BC Hydro is encouraging British Columbians to join other Canadians in support of Earth Hour 2012 by turning off their lights from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m., March 31. Last year, British Columbians saved 117 megawatt hours of electricity and reduced the provincial electricity load by 1.8 per cent – the equivalent of turning off 7.8 million 15-watt compact fluorescent light bulbs for the hour. To date, 87 municipalities in B.C. have confirmed their participation in this year’s Earth Hour. In 2011, millions of people in more than 135 countries participated in this symbolic event to show how easy it is to save energy every day. The annual Earth Hour global event is hosted by the World Wildlife Fund. BC Hydro supports Earth Hour by encouraging customers to turn off unnecessary lights and electronics to conserve power and show support for climate change reduction efforts. The Hunger Games” chronicles a dystopic Capitol which requires its twelve subjugated districts to pay tribute in the form of a teenage boy and girl, forced to participate in the annual “Hunger Games,” a fight-to-the-death live televised event. Katniss Everdeen’s little sister is chosen in the lottery to participate and Katniss volunteers to take her place. Although persevering through hardship is commonplace for Katniss, she must start making choices that weigh survival against humanity and life against love in order to win the games and return home. • Science Fiction • Rating PG - Parents: Disturbing, not recommended for young children, violence • Length 2:22 Submitted photo

Reminder: effective April 2 BOOK YOUR BOOTH NOW! open fire prohibition in Cariboo For The 5th Annual South Cariboo

Effective April 2 at noon, the size of open fires will be restricted within the Cariboo Fire Centre to help prevent humancaused wildfires and protect the public. This will prohibit: • The burning of any waste, slash or other materials (piled or unpiled) larger than one metre by one metre. • The burning of more than two open fires of any size at the same time. • Stubble or grass fires of any size over any area. The prohibition will remain in effect until Sept. 30, or until further notice. The prohibition covers all B.C. parks,

Crown lands and private lands, but it does not apply within the boundaries of a local government that has forest fire prevention bylaws in place and is serviced by a fire department. Before lighting a fire, residents should check with local civic authorities regarding any current

prohibitions. Anyone found in contravention of an open fire prohibition may be issued a ticket for $345, or, if convicted in court, may be fined up to $100,000 and sentenced to one year in jail. If the contravention causes or contributes to a wildfire, the person may be subject to a penalty of up to $10,000 and be ordered to pay all firefighting and associated costs. The Cariboo Fire Centre stretches as far south as Loon Lake to just north of Quesnel at the Cottonwood River. From east to west, the boundaries stretch from the

western edge of Wells Gray Provincial Park to the eastern boundary of Tweedsmuir Provincial Park. To report a wildfire or unattended campfire, call *5555 on your cell phone or call toll free to 1-800663-5555. For the latest information on fire activity, conditions and prohibitions, visit the Wildfire Management Branch website: www. bcwildfire.ca.

YES program looking for applicants The Cariboo Family Enrichment Centre (CFEC) Youth Employment Services (YES) will be starting in April. “We don’t have the exact date yet, possibly mid-April,” says YES program facilitator Thurza Aspinall. “But, we are accepting applications now.” The criteria for the program is as follows: • Applicants must be between 15 and 30

years old. • They must be facing any type of barrier to finding and/or maintaining employment. • They cannot be attending school. • They must not be on Employment Insurance. • They may be on Income Assistance, but must advise their worker. • They may work part time, but no more than 20 hours per week. Aspinall says anyone who fits

Home sales in Interior, North outpace province On March 15, the British Columbia Real Estate Association (BCREA) reported the dollar volume of homes sold through Multiple Listing Service (MLS) in British Columbia declined 9.6 per cent to $3.4 billion in February compared to the same month last year. A total of 5,923 MLS residential unit sales were recorded over the same period, a decline of 7.6 per cent. The average MLS residential price was $574,975 in February, 2.1 per cent lower than in February 2011. “Sales gains in the Interior and the North were offset again in February by less robust demand on the South Coast,” said BCREA chief economist Cameron Muir. “Improving economic conditions in both B.C. and Alberta are positively influencing consumer demand outside of large urban areas, closing the gap

between regional housing markets.” Year-to-date, B.C. residential sales dollar volume declined 9.2 per cent to $5.5 billion, compared to the same period last year. Residential unit sales dipped 6.8 per cent to 9,828 units, while the average MLS residential price edged back 2.5 per cent to $557,732 over the same period.

this program criteria should contact Community Employment Services at 250-395-5121, as soon as possible. “When they phone, they are appointed a case worker, and then they are referred to

us.” The YES program facilitators will contact the youth to set up an interview, she says, adding the applicants should have a resume and should dress for an interview. “I suggest people

apply now. We accept between 10 and 12 youth into the program, but because of the criteria, not all applicants will be accepted.” For more information, call YES at 250-395-1850.

BC business confidence growing slowly The British Columbia barometer index increased slightly in January to 69.3 from 68 in December (index levels between 65 and 75 indicate a growing economy), according to the Canadian Federation of Independent Business. B.C.’s confidence level has remained constant for the last several months and continues to be above the national confidence level (65.2). B.C. ranks third in confidence behind Alberta (73.3) and Saskatchewan (70).

Most employers do not plan to make changes to full-time employment levels (69 per cent), with 15 per cent planning to increase full-time employment and 16 per cent planning to decrease employment. THE LUCKIEST SIGNS THIS WEEK: SAGITTARIUS, CAPRICORN, AND AQUARIUS.

ARIES

You are up against a situation that will turn you into some kind of hero. It feels good to be brave and you like having the opportunity to shine. TAURUS

Generally, you are happy with your routine and enjoy having things well planned and organized. This week, though, it will do you some good to let go of old habits and have some fun with new ideas. GEMINI

You seem to be running low on patience with just about everybody, and it’s because you are feeling irritated by routine. You might spend a lot of time driving people around in your car, so make sure it is running properly. CANCER

Your astrological sign is represented by family and home, and this week you might be thinking about purchasing a house. This is a good time to move forward with that, as all the steps will be smooth (including the financing!). LEO

A lot of activity is coming your way. You enjoy the company of your friends and family, even if they are sometimes quite demanding. You enjoy being a devoted friend and family member this week. VIRGO

You might have to deal with some kind of emergency. At work you are overwhelmed as more clients come to you and your coworkers than you ever would have imagined. You will find the resources to follow through.

LIBRA

You feel very tense lately, and all that stress might affect your health. Take some time to rest, and indulge in a period of silence if you can. If you do, you will be back on your feet in no time. SCORPIO

You may be pleasantly surprised by a promotion at work. This good news might inspire your friends to organize a party to celebrate, since they all know how hard you have worked.

HOW TO PLAY: Fill in the grid so that every row, every column and every 3x3 box contains the numbers 1 through 9 only once. Each 3x3 box is outlined with a darker line. You already have a few numbers to get you started. Remember: You must not repeat the numbers 1 through 9 in the same line, column or 3x3 box.

SAGITTARIUS

You might sign up for a class that will help you advance professionally. This may also allow you to meet new people. Everything you do this week will be done fast. CAPRICORN

You are tempted to go on a last-minute getaway holiday. It’s a great idea, but take the time to get informed about the location so you don’t end up disappointed. AQUARIUS

If somebody owes you money; you will finally get your due. Stay close to home this week so you can connect with your loved ones around family activities. PISCES

Expect some kind of conflict with a coworker, friend, family member, or lover. Just remember that it is okay to not agree about everything. Keep your cool and the dark cloud will pass.

Angela McKee and her husband have lived in the South Cariboo for three years. In that time they have started a family and have enjoyed the smalltown atmosphere and family orientation of our community. Prior to starting her family, Angela worked as a youth support worker at the Youth Zone and gained a great deal of knowledge about our community, CFEC and the needs of youth. Prior to coming to the South Cariboo, Angela managed various programs in the agriculture community in the Fraser Valley working both with staff as well as producers. PSO student Ben Mowbray is the second new youth board member and has lived in 100 Mile House all his life. He plans to attend university once he graduates. Ben is active in snowboarding, fishing and golfing, and

would like to add a youthful insight to the board on matters and a viewpoint similar to his peers. The board’s other directors include: • Sheila Hart, board chair and accreditation committee chair, seven years of service. • Grace Marshall, vice-chair, three years of service. • Janice Silveria, secretary and policy committee chair, 10-plus years of service. • Ron Howard, finance committee, four years of service. • Vic Popiel, audit committee chair, 10-plus years of service. Anyone interested in learning more about CFEC and becoming a member of the CFEC society and perhaps a director is encouraged to contact Sheila Hart or Lisa De Paoli at 250395-5155. Lisa De Paoli is the CFEC executive director.
