NDP Leader Adrian Dix was let off with a warning after SkyTrain police caught him riding the transit system without a ticket on March 3. The incident came to light three weeks later after a Vancouver newspaper was tipped off by someone in the transit police, Dix told report-

The Valley Room at The Lodge in 100 Mile House was crowded with people participating in the annual Seedy Saturday on March 10. It was co-hosted by the Horse Lake Community Farm Co-op (HLCFC) and the Community Kitchen. Tables, with information on everything from the meat co-op, beekeeping, worm composting, the benefits of saving seeds and more, circled the room. BC Hydro is encouraging British Columbians to join other Canadians in support of Earth Hour 2012 by turning off their lights from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m., March 31. Last year, British Columbians saved 117 megawatt hours of electricity and reduced the provincial electricity load by 1.8 per cent – the equivalent of turning off 7.8 million 15-watt compact fluorescent light bulbs for the hour. To date, 87 municipalities in B.C. have confirmed their participation in this year’s Earth Hour. In 2011, millions of people in more than 135 countries participated in this symbolic event to show how easy it is to save energy every day. The annual Earth Hour global event is hosted by the World Wildlife Fund. BC Hydro supports Earth Hour by encouraging customers to turn off unnecessary lights and electronics to conserve power and show support for climate change reduction efforts. Effective April 2 at noon, the size of open fires will be restricted within the Cariboo Fire Centre to help prevent humancaused wildfires and protect the public. This will prohibit: • The burning of any waste, slash or other materials (piled or unpiled) larger than one metre by one metre. • The burning of more than two open fires of any size at the same time. • Stubble or grass fires of any size over any area. The prohibition will remain in effect until Sept. 30, or until further notice. The prohibition covers all B.C. parks,
Crown lands and private lands, but it does not apply within the boundaries of a local government that has forest fire prevention bylaws in place and is serviced by a fire department. Before lighting a fire, residents should check with local civic authorities regarding any current
prohibitions. Anyone found in contravention of an open fire prohibition may be issued a ticket for $345, or, if convicted in court, may be fined up to $100,000 and sentenced to one year in jail. If the contravention causes or contributes to a wildfire, the person may be subject to a penalty of up to $10,000 and be ordered to pay all firefighting and associated costs. The Cariboo Fire Centre stretches as far south as Loon Lake to just north of Quesnel at the Cottonwood River. From east to west, the boundaries stretch from the
western edge of Wells Gray Provincial Park to the eastern boundary of Tweedsmuir Provincial Park. YES program looking for applicants The Cariboo Family Enrichment Centre (CFEC) Youth Employment Services (YES) will be starting in April. “We don’t have the exact date yet, possibly mid-April,” says YES program facilitator Thurza Aspinall. “But, we are accepting applications now.” The criteria for the program is as follows: • Applicants must be between 15 and 30
years old. • They must be facing any type of barrier to finding and/or maintaining employment. • They cannot be attending school. • They must not be on Employment Insurance. • They may be on Income Assistance, but must advise their worker. • They may work part time, but no more than 20 hours per week. Home sales in Interior, North outpace province On March 15, the British Columbia Real Estate Association (BCREA) reported the dollar volume of homes sold through Multiple Listing Service (MLS) in British Columbia declined 9.6 per cent to $3.4 billion in February compared to the same month last year. A total of 5,923 MLS residential unit sales were recorded over the same period, a decline of 7.6 per cent. The average MLS residential price was $574,975 in February, 2.1 per cent lower than in February 2011. “Sales gains in the Interior and the North were offset again in February by less robust demand on the South Coast,” said BCREA chief economist Cameron Muir. “Improving economic conditions in both B.C. and Alberta are positively influencing consumer demand outside of large urban areas, closing the gap
between regional housing markets.” Year-to-date, B.C. residential sales dollar volume declined 9.2 per cent to $5.5 billion, compared to the same period last year. Residential unit sales dipped 6.8 per cent to 9,828 units, while the average MLS residential price edged back 2.5 per cent to $557,732 over the same period.

BC business confidence growing slowly The British Columbia barometer index increased slightly in January to 69.3 from 68 in December (index levels between 65 and 75 indicate a growing economy), according to the Canadian Federation of Independent Business. B.C.’s confidence level has remained constant for the last several months and continues to be above the national confidence level (65.2). B.C. ranks third in confidence behind Alberta (73.3) and Saskatchewan (70).
Most employers do not plan to make changes to full-time employment levels (69 per cent), with 15 per cent planning to increase full-time employment and 16 per cent planning to decrease employment. Clark also appointed VancouverLangara MLA Moira Stilwell to a new role, parliamentary secretary to the health ministry, responsible for health-care innovation. Stilwell is a radiologist and nuclear medicine specialist. Clark appointed Richmond Centre MLA Rob Howard parliamentary secretary to the transportation ministry, focused on air services agreements.

Angela McKee and her husband have lived in the South Cariboo for three years. In that time they have started a family and have enjoyed the smalltown atmosphere and family orientation of our community. Prior to starting her family, Angela worked as a youth support worker at the Youth Zone and gained a great deal of knowledge about our community, CFEC and the needs of youth. Prior to coming to the South Cariboo, Angela managed various programs in the agriculture community in the Fraser Valley working both with staff as well as producers. PSO student Ben Mowbray is the second new youth board member and has lived in 100 Mile House all his life. He plans to attend university once he graduates. Ben is active in snowboarding, fishing and golfing, and
would like to add a youthful insight to the board on matters and a viewpoint similar to his peers. The board’s other directors include: • Sheila Hart, board chair and accreditation committee chair, seven years of service. • Grace Marshall, vice-chair, three years of service. • Janice Silveria, secretary and policy committee chair, 10-plus years of service. • Ron Howard, finance committee, four years of service. • Vic Popiel, audit committee chair, 10-plus years of service.
