Donovan Cavers could never take a swing at fellow city councillor Arjun Singh. “It would be like hitting a teddy bear,” Cavers said of the first name floated by him for a possible celebrity boxing match in the city. Noting he’s never hit anyone — “I’m a peaceful person” — Cavers said he was intrigued when the idea of a celebrity match to help a local charity was suggested by Chad Moats, a candidate in the November civic election, an organizer of the anti-HST effort and the man behind last year’s failed recall campaign against Kamloops-Thompson Liberal MLA Terry Lake. “He suggested Arjun,” Cavers said of Moats, “but I don’t think I could even hit Arjun. So, I suggested Jim Whittaker. He’d probably like to kick my ass.” Whittaker is the project manager for the proposed Ajax mine south of Kamloops.

In a January column, Cavers took a virtual swing at Whittaker, telling him to drive carefully on the Coquihalla Highway — but, ideally, to not bother coming back to Kamloops. Cavers has been vocal in his disagreement with the potential open-pit copper-and-gold mine that could be built just south of Aberdeen. Moats said he was inspired to promote the potential bout again — he tried to get one going during the last municipal election, in which he was also running for council — because of the success of the recent match between Liberal MP Justin Trudeau and Conservative Sen. Patrick Brazeau. That event, in which the older Trudeau trounced Brazeau, raised $250,000 for charity. When told Cavers had expressed a bit of reluctance because he’s “a peaceful person,” Moats replied people need to realize boxing is a sport. He’s offered to help train

Cavers, noting the Kamloops Boxing Club, of which he is a member, would help put on the event, adding some minor bouts before the main attraction. Whittaker was busy in meetings in Vancouver on Monday and did not return a phone call from KTW. Meanwhile, Polish mining giant KGHM has, as expected, increased its stake in Ajax. KGHM has held a 51 per cent stake in the project and decided on Monday, April 3, to increase ownership to 80 per cent via a $30-million payment to Abacus Mining and Exploration — a Vancouverbased geological firm. The public-comment period on the mine proposal ended last week. Under the Environmental Assessment Act, the proponent is required to address each comment. The Environmental Assessment Office will then determine the adequacy of the proponent’s responses, and an applicationinformation-requirement document will be prepared.

Litigation ongoing after tribunal ruling By Dale Bass STAFF REPORTER dale@kamloopsthisweek.com

The Kamloops Immigrant Society (KIS) has no choice but to continue with litigation against two former employees, according to its board president. David Cruz said it would be better if the KIS could come to an agreement with past executive director Wanda Herman and staff member Deborah Harrison, but there are no indications that will happen. Herman, Harrison and two other former KIS employees were fired from their jobs following a dispute that began in 2009. The group had taken its case to the province’s human-rights tribunal, which ruled last week in favour of the agency. The dispute centred on activities by Herman and an investigation into her performance, which led to Herman taking medical leave. Then-board member Vern Short was appointed interim director. Tensions continued with Herman and others trying to call a special general meeting to replace the existing board with new directors. The meeting did not occur. About a month later, Harrison filed a complaint against Short and KIS alleging harassment, a complaint that

was settled privately. The internal dispute made headlines and, Cruz said, did significant damage to the reputation of the agency. Legal costs have been massive, he said, and are another reason why the lawsuits will be pursued. In its ruling, the tribunal rejected much of the evidence provided by the former employees; in particular, the ruling said Harrison was working while still employed to undermine the board and further the coup. The ruling also criticizes then-board president Bernard Igwe, saying his management approach “was dictatorial and certainly contributed to the alienation which allowed Ms. Herman to engage the support of so many employees to overthrow the board.” It also said Cruz was “quick to judge, pedantic and unyielding in his views,” which did little “to calm the swirling currents at KIS.” Cruz told KTW the agency views the ruling as a complete vindication. He said statements the board was incompetent at the time can’t be supported by the ruling “because an incompetent board would not have won at the tribunal. “Everybody will take a spin the way they want to spin it,” he said.

Accident claims life of city senior By Tim Petruk STAFF REPORTER tim@kamloopsthisweek.com

A Kamloops woman has died after a collision in a North Shore intersection last week. Rosina Spina was walking across 12th Street at Tranquille Road at about 11:40 a.m. on Friday, March 30, when she was struck by an SUV. Police say the vehicle — an older-model Nissan X-Trail — had the right-of-way

when the 77-year-old pedestrian entered the intersection. “When the light turned green, the traffic proceeded and an elderly woman stepped out to cross Tranquille Road without noticing the traffic was moving,” said Kamloops RCMP Sgt. Fran Bethell. “The driver proceeding on the green light saw the pedestrian step onto the road and attempted to stop, but struck the woman, who then fell, hitting her head.” Witnesses in the area told KTW they

saw the woman struggle to get back up to her feet a number of times before paramedics arrived. Spina was rushed to Royal Inland Hospital, where she remained in serious condition until she died on the night of Saturday, March 31. Police have seized the Nissan SUV as per protocol, but no charges have been laid. Investigators say alcohol was not a factor. The investigation is ongoing.

Search is on for Sun Peaks employee who went missing Police and search-and-rescue crews were scouring an area near Sun Peaks as of KTW press deadline on Monday, April 2, for a foreign resort worker after she vanished while hiking to Whitecroft. Kamloops Rural RCMP Staff Sgt. Doug Aird said 24-year-old Cinzia Pedrenie left Sun Peaks on foot at about 4 a.m. on Monday. Pedrenie, who is from Switzerland but had been working at

Sun Peaks, stands five-foot-four with an athletic, slender build and should-length brown hair. She was last seen wearing a blue coat, blue jeans and running shoes. Investigators believe she might have been picked up by a passing motorist and are asking anyone with information to call police at 250-828-3000.

By the end of spring, B.C. Conservatives in the Kamloops-North Thompson riding should be on the hunt for a candidate to back in next year’s provincial election. About two-dozen people turned out in Rayleigh on Saturday, March 31, to elect a new board of directors for the constituency association, which will be registered with Elections BC in the coming weeks.

After that, the new board will set a date for open nominations, said BC Conservative regional director Alan Forseth. The KamloopsSouth Thompson riding association is set to go through the same steps in May. So far, a couple of people are thinking about seeking the nomination in KamloopsNorth Thompson, Forseth said, and one person has spoken with party leader John Cummins about the Kamloops-South

Thompson nomination. The association is up to about 75 members, with about six more signing on in the past few days. “It’s a steady growing momentum for the party and for the local region,” Forseth said. The party is also claiming a 400-member bump provincially since last week, when Abbotsford-South MLA John van Dongen quit the B.C. Liberals and defected to the B.C. Conservatives. An Angus Reid poll this week has the party

tied with the Liberals, with support from 23 per cent of respondents. Going forward, Forseth said the challenge will be to present the party as a viable alternative for voters, “instead of voting against something they don’t want to get.” He also shrugged off suggestions the party will simply split the free-enterprise vote in the next election, allowing for an NDP victory — an argument Kamloops-North Thompson MLA Terry Lake and other BC

Liberals have made in recent weeks. “I find that a rather sad and pathetic comment on the part of the B.C. Liberal Party,” Forseth said. “Is the only option they have to present that they are not the NDP?” The new KamloopsNorth Thompson constituency association board includes president Ed Fehr, a former Saskatchewan Party riding association vice-president, and vice-president Ron Anderson.

Pit bulls seized after reported attack near university A 19-year-old Kamloops man was treated for puncture wounds after a pit-bull attack near Thompson Rivers University on the weekend. Just before 6 p.m. on Sunday, April 1, emergency crews were called to the area of Summit Drive and McGill Road for a reported dog bite. Paramedics found the victim and took him to hospital. Witnesses told police a man had been dumpster diving in the area, with his two pit bulls tethered to the garbage bin. When the victim came near the animals, they broke free and attacked him. Police believe the animal owner intervened and stopped the attack. He then fled on foot, with the dogs, and was soon found by police near the Tournament Capital Centre, Kamloops RCMP Staff Sgt. Weapon seized Learned said the dogs were seized by City of Kamloops bylaw officers and the 24-year-old owner was arrested on suspicion of criminal negligence. Learned said the man was not forthcoming with investigators. “When he came back to the office, there was not a lot of discussion,” he said. “I think it was hard to accept the fact there’s a strong potential these dogs could be put down.” The owner was released without criminal charges, but the bylaw investigation is ongoing. Calls to the City of Kamloops were not returned as of KTW press time, and the fate of the pit bulls is unknown. Learned refused to

A 25-year-old Kamloops man was arrested at gunpoint after allegedly firing a shotgun out the window of his moving vehicle on South Kamloops street on the weekend. Just before 5 a.m. on Saturday, March 31, police received a report of a man shooting out of his pickup truck in the 700-block of Munro Street. Learned said officers found and stopped the vehicle at Ninth Avenue and Pleasant Street. The suspect was later released on a promise to appear in court, with a string of potential charges likely to be recommended to the Crown. Learned said no one was injured and no property was damaged in the shooting, adding a witness said it appeared the man fired the weapon “upward, almost at the

street light.” Police expect to recommend charges including careless use of a fire-

arm, unauthorized possession of a firearm and knowingly possessing an unauthorized firearm.

Punch-up probe continues Fight between students was filmed, uploaded to web By Tim Petruk STAFF REPORTER

Officials with the Kamloops-Thompson school district are continuing their investigation into a vicious schoolyard fight last week that was captured on video and posted to YouTube. School district assistant superintendent Karl de Bruijn said principals at three area schools — Westsyde secondary, Brock middle school and Twin Rivers Education Centre — are trying to figure out who was involved and to what extent. “We’re continuing to investigate the involvement of these students who were caught on the video and encouraged or promoted the fight,” he said. “The big goal is to ensure it doesn’t happen again.” The fight took place over the lunch hour on Tuesday, March 27, near Westsyde secondary. “We had some visitors fight at lunch,” said Westsyde principal Sean Lamoureux. “The original students involved in the fight were

suspended pending the investigation. The students from the other schools were suspended by their principals.” District officials are now examining the video — which was pulled from YouTube shortly after it was posted — to determine who was present, and mete out any punishment. The combatants will face a disciplinary hearing at the school district office in the near future. De Bruijn acknowledged the fact schoolyard fights happen from time to time, but said the everevolving world of social media is making it easier for students to “promote” brawls — and share video of them. “That makes it more widespread,” he said, adding the initial disagreement that sparked the brawl started on Facebook. “The bottom line is, we don’t want to see children hurt.” De Bruijn said the school district received its copy of the video from CFJC-TV7, which pulled a copy off of YouTube before it was taken down.

Arrests in vandalism spree By Tim Petruk STAFF REPORTER

Two arrests have been made in connection to the recent vandalism spree in Brocklehurst, which resulted in more than 50 windows smashed at a number of public buildings. Kamloops RCMP Staff Sgt. Grant Learned said two males — one 17 and one 18 — turned themselves in to police on Thursday, March 22, three days after the vandalism spree in the early-morning hours of March 19. Both were in the company of their parents while turning themselves in. Mounties did not disclose the arrests until

Thursday, March 29. Learned said investigators have identified another suspect — a 15-year-old boy — but have yet to contact him. “All three youths had been found walking within the police cordon that had been immediately established after calls were received about glass being smashed,” Learned said. “The males were identified, questioned and released at the time pending further investigation.” The two suspects who turned themselves in were released pending future court dates, Learned said.

They have yet to be formally charged, but Mounties will likely recommend counts of break and enter and mischief. Police first caught wind of the crime spree at about 1:45 a.m. on March 19, when a resident living near Brock Arena called 911 to report the sound of glass breaking. That initial report was followed by similar calls about incidents at other public buildings in the area — Brock middle school, Kay Bingham elementary and the adjacent Kamloops Boys and Girls Club building. Mounties set up a

perimeter and found a group of eight youths — including the three suspects — but no arrests were made at the time. Kay Bingham was hit the hardest, with more than 40 windows smashed. KamloopsThompson school district officials estimated the cost of the damage at the school at $20,000. Learned said investigators are still trying to figure out the extent of the damage, and asked anyone with information to call Kamloops RCMP at 250-828-3000 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Twenty-five years after his Man in Motion World Tour began, Rick Hansen is on the road again â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and he came through Kamloops on Thursday, March 29. The Man in Motion tour was undertaken to make the world more accessible to people living with disabilities. The 25th Anniversary Relay began on Aug. 24, 2011, in Cape Spear, Newfoundland. The relay features medal-bearers who will run, walk, wheel or bike and complete their segments through a variety of forms of movement for all abilities. In Kamloops, 20 medal-bearers travelled a route that ended at the Tournament Capital Centre, where a ceremony and festivities were held. Tournament Capital ﬁnally embraces the dark Finally, Kamloops was not left in the dark during Earth Hour, the annual 60 minutes when British Columbians are urged to reduce their use of electricity. Last year, Kamloops finished near the bottom of 70 communities surveyed by BC Hydro, as the city actually increased its power consumption from the previous year’s Earth Hour, when the Tournament Capital tied Coldstream for dead-last spot. This year’s Earth Hour was held on Saturday, March 31, and Kamloops fared better, reducing energy use by 3.6 per cent to finish in the middle

of the provincial pack. According to BC Hydro, British Columbians saved 121 megawatt hours of electricity and reduced the provincial electricity load by 1.67 percent during Earth Hour — about the same as the 1.8 percent drop in 2011 — and the equivalent of turning off about nine-million 12.5-watt LED light bulbs. The community with the highest reduction in consumption — 12.1 per cent— was Revelstoke. Pemberton measured the second highest decrease at 6.8 per cent. In total, 91 communities across BC registered their participation in Earth Hour.

The familiar becomes forgotten and strange becomes standard

HE PAST FEW WEEKS have delivered to us news regarding obsolescence. First came word venerable Encyclopedia Brittanica will no longer publish a print edition of the majestic multi-book marvel of myriad knowledge, ending a glorious 244-year run that helped educate — and decorate the bookshelves of — the masses. From here on in, the encyclopedia will be an online version only. Then came word during last week’s federal budget that the ruling Conservatives will eliminate the lowly penny from the Canadian currency clan, the explanation being it does not make sense to spend 1.6 cents to create a coin worth one cent. Both announcements spurred thousands to spill their memories online, memories of how Encyclopedia Brittanica opened the world to them in a world without widespread Internet; memories of those little brown coins being pure gold to a kid on his way to the corner store on a lazy summer day. Back in the day, the encyclopedia had few competitors in the home when it came to dispensing facts and figures. And, the little penny was powerful enough to buy something on its own, without the help of its flashier, silver cousins. However, in this age of mindshattering progression and gnat-like attention spans, the light speed of the Internet in retrieving information has forced Brittanica publishers to choose the latter in the old “if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em” lament. The penny, meanwhile, has gone from having purchasing power to being relegated to filling charity cans and

MUSINGS rounding out the ubiquitous tax at the till. At the rapid pace at which society races forward, it seems more and more of what we held near and dear is disappearing. But, are what we read and hear about disappearing into the vat of obsolescence really vanishing? Or, do the various articles and broadcast segments on this topic not have the pulse of what the average person uses? In 2009, the website businessinsider. com posted a slideshow online titled 21 Things That Became Obsolete This Decade, meaning in the 2000-2009 decade (the aughts?). The list included some items that are (or are near to being) obsolete, including PDAs (personal digital assistant) with stylus pens, such as the Palm Pilot; email accounts that charge for use; dial-up Internet; camera film; and floppy disks. The list also included some items that, as far as I can tell, remain in widespread use, including landline phones; long-distance charges; fax machines; and phone books/dictionaries. It’s a world today of dizzying advancement that can leave one flailing

about, trying to grasp what is current — but it’s hard. For example, compact discs remain, in my mind, technology that is new and shiny. But, that comes from one who remembers vividly when CDs emerged to elbow aside cassette tapes. I can also recall when dollar stores were, well, actual dollar stores. All of us, whether we are in our 30s, 40s or 50s, can sit back and recall with clarity those jolting moments when the familiar became the forgotten and the strange became standard. Imagine, then, the thoughts of Helen Mornan, who turns 102 tomorrow at the Renaissance Residences in North Kamloops. My generation was born as man landed on the moon and we started families as we began venturing into that wondrous world on the web. Mornan has lived through so much more, through two world wars and through the inventions of the ballpoint pen, the television, the crossword puzzle, the polio vaccine, bubble gum, movies as we know them today, FM and satellite radio, canned beer, the atomic bomb, silly putty, the computer, cake mix, the credit card, the artificial heart, the helicopter and Viagra. While Finance Minister Jim Flaherty delivered a fatal blow to the Canadian penny, his budget last week made it abundantly clear the Conservative government doesn’t give two cents about sharing the sacrifice it is asking working Canadians to make. The budget inflicted a knockout blow to the retirement hopes of many Canadians under the age of 54, raising the age at which Canadians can collect Old Age Security to 67 from 65, beginning in April 2023. While the Conservatives have hinted at the pending changes to OAS for several months, the budget puts retirement at age 65 out of reach for most Canadians born after 1958. That is, unless you are a member of Parliament. While ordinary young Canadians must become accustomed to the notion of working until the grave, the Conservative government has preserved an MP pension plan fitting of the ruling elite. Flaherty hinted that, “over time,” changes will be made to require MPs to make 50 per cent of the contributions to their pensions — something the vast majority of private-sector employees already do. The Canadian Taxpayers Federation estimates MPs currently contribute about $1 to their pensions for every $23.30 supplied by taxpayers, once all the perks federal politicians receive are worked into the equation. While the federal budget made vague reference to further “adjustments” to MP pensions, there was no mention of raising the eligibility age, which sits at 55. So, while Canadians are being asked to wait until age 67 before they see the roughly $510 a month in average OAS benefits, the estimated $5,600 in monthly pension benefits awaiting Flaherty — and thousands per month awaiting various other MPs — are there for the taking. The government’s priorities have never been more clear.

STUDENTS LEARN THAT HEAVY METAL ROCKS Twenty-six local high-school students received an education in heavy metal as part of their work experience program on Friday, March 30, at the Tk’emlups Indian Band gravel pit. The fourth annual Heavy Metal Rocks program offers students interested in working in the construction industry the opportunity to learn how to safely use heavy machinery. Students were supervised and mentored by experienced operators as they learned how to use 13 different pieces of heavy machinery. Will city cut costs at airport ﬁrehall? Editor: If the city installs another firehall at Kamloops Airport, I insist council looks into operating it privately as opposed to employing the high cost of municipal union employees. Saskatoon took this approach after being unable to secure a reasonable contract with its unionized group. If, in the end, we use the municipal union, I insist there be a nomoonlighting clause to terminate

employees who pursue extra income by competing with the private sector. Also, will the new firetruck, paid for by the federal government, fit into existing facilities or will the taxpayer be building another Taj Mahal firehall at the airport? Ajax should adhere to KISS principle Editor: Re: (‘Group wants Ajax information,’ March 29): One of several lessons from my master’s degree research on how corporations teach their employees was from the corporate planning department at Exxon headquarters in Houston, Tex. Every page I wrote for Exxon was clearly

stamped “proprietary”. That means it’s secret. Eventually, it was time to present my research to my peers at the University of Houston. I asked Exxon’s corporate planning director, who was also the planning team leader and my boss, for advice on how to deal with the “proprietary” conundrum.

Officials with the proposed Ajax mine could learn from the then-largest corporation in the world. He looked over my work. “Just take off the ‘proprietary stamp’”, he said. It was the KISS (keep it simple, stupid) principle at its best. Christina Mader Kamloops

Editor: Re: KTW editorial of March 27 (‘Let’s raise province’s driving age to 18’): I am an “N” driver and disagree with this viewpoint as many articles cite studies that claim fatal crashes with young drivers have fallen. I would like to ask if any studies have been done on fatal crashes involving drivers between the ages of 19 and 23. I also wonder if studies are being done regarding drivers who drive aggressively toward new drivers, because I have noticed people are constantly tailgating me and cutting me off compared to when I drive with my parents. The editorial states teenagers don’t need to drive. I disagree strongly because me and many of my friends have jobs that aren’t within walking distance of home or school. To ride the bus to work, I would arrive late and I wouldn’t be getting home until 11 p.m., having to wait at the downtown transit station by myself. Many teenagers who have jobs have parents who are unable to drive them due to their own work shifts. I was raised to believe responsibility is learned and not just acquired by turning a magic number. Happy Easter! There are plenty of fun things to do this weekend • The B.C. Wildlife Park has four days of activities to mark the weekend. They include a pancake breakfast each day from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Cost is $5.95 for adults, $4.95 for children. There will be Easter-egg hunts every half-hour, starting at 10 a.m. and continuing to 3:30 p.m. The hunt for more than 150,000 hidden chocolate eggs is open on the hour for children five and younger, on the half-hour for those ages six to 12. Children ages 13 and older can take part in scavenger hunts. There will be colouring contests, Fun Factor bouncy inflatables, paintball target shooting and Uncle Chris the Clown entertains each day between 10 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Of course, there will be visits from the Easter Bunny, as well. There are also the regular runs of the Wildlife Express miniature train, the chance to get up close with the animals in the Double H Corral Family Farm, the wolf-feeding at noon and face painting by donation. Admission for April is $11 for adults, $9 for seniors, $7 for children ages three to 17 and free for those two and younger. The park, located at 9077 Dallas Dr., is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. • Tim Hortons hosts its second annual Easter egg hung on Sunday, April 8 from 10 a.m. to noon at Albert McGowan Park, 2025 Summit Dr., where there will be more than 25,000 Easter eggs hidden throughout the park. This free event is for children 12 and younger. Cut bread into one-half inch cubes. Beat eggs and milk in a medium bowl. Stir in bread, sausage, apple and cheese. Miller in jail, denied bail He’s alleged to have defrauded a grocery store tim@kamloopsthisweek.com

Adrian Miller is back in jail — and, this time, it looks like he’ll stay there for a while. The controversial Thompson Rivers University studentsenator and governorelect was denied bail last week in Kamloops provincial court — and had his bail revoked on all other outstanding charges. According to court records, the 26-yearold had a new charge of fraud under $5,000 sworn against him on Thursday, March 29. He was arrested the same day, appeared before a judge and was denied bail. Kamloops provincial court Judge Stephen Harrison also revoked Miller’s bail on his other outstanding criminal charges. The latest charge stems from an incident on March 11,

in which Miller is alleged to have defrauded the Real Canadian Superstore. Police allege Miller entered the store with a receipt, removed items similar to those on the receipt from a shelf and returned them for cash. Miller is facing a long list of outstanding criminal allegations. He is slated to stand trial on five breach charges this summer, with one trial in July and two in August. In December, he has a two-day trial booked on charges he stole jewelry and

electronics from his landlords and pawned them for cash. Miller was elected as a student representative to TRU’s senate and board of governors following student elections in December. He has attended one senate meeting, but missed his swearing-in ceremony for the board of governors in February while in jail. TRU has said officials will wait until Miller’s legal matters are sorted out before deciding how his status on the board will proceed. It’s not known what impact Miller’s incarceration will have on his status as a student in good standing — a requirement to sit as a student representative on the senate and board. In January, TRU attempted to have Miller kicked out of school for non-payment of tuition fees.

In an emergency hearing, a B.C. Supreme Court judge sided with the university — but Miller came up with the $539 he owed just in time to remain enrolled. Miller also has a lawsuit filed in B.C. Supreme Court claiming TRU has been “negligent” in its dealings with him as a student. In November, Miller ran unsuccessfully for a spot on the Kamloops-Thompson school district’s board of education. In recent months, as various warrants and charges have taken Miller in and out of police custody, TRU has at times upped its on-campus security. There is no word what, if any, impact Miller’s detention will have on campus security. Miller’s next court appearance is slated for Thursday, April 5.

HE KAMLOOPS International Bantam Ice Hockey Tournament (KIBIHT) is always attended by a plethora of scouts searching for high-end hockey talent. Among the talent adjudicators going to this year’s KIBIHT — the 44th of its kind, which gets underway on Wednesday, April 4, in the River City — is Matt Recchi, the Kamloops Blazers’ director of player personnel. Recchi let KTW in on some of the players he will be watching. Brad Morrison, a forward who plays with Okanagan Hockey Academy (OHA) in Penticton, is a highly skilled forward who will draw the attention of many scouts this week. “He’s a high-end forward,” Recchi said of Morrison, who’s racked up 83 goals and 141 points in 54 games for OHA. Another player on Recchi’s radar is Terrell Draude of the Sask Valley Vipers. The 6-foot-2 forward is on a torrid pace in the Saskatchewan Bantam AA Hockey League ranks, scoring

54 goals and 94 points in 24 games. He has also compiled 81 penalty minutes. Jansen Harkins of the North Shore Winter Club Winterhawks of North Vancouver is expected to turn heads this week. The 5-foot-10 centre — who is the son of former NHLer Todd Harkins — has made a name for himself as a two-way player. “He is a very skilled guy who skates real well and has a good compete level,” Recchi said of Harkins. “Just a real good all-around player.” Taz Berman and Bo Didur — both Winterhawks’ netminders — will be under the watchful eyes of many scouts throughout the tournament, Recchi said. On the blue line, look out for Joe Gatenby, a 5-foot-11 defenceman who plays for Pursuit of Excellence

of Kelowna. “They have a defenceman, Gatenby, who’s real good, but their whole back end is real good,” Recchi said. Evan Fiala of the Vipers is also a D-man worth watching this week, Recchi said. The 6-foot-1 blueliner has racked up five goals, 32 points and 87 penalty minutes in 23 games this season. Another player to look out for is Winterhawk forward Jordan Kawaguchi, the cousin of Devin Setoguchi, who plays for the NHL’s Minnesota Wild. “He is a small, skilled forward,” Recchi said. Among the Kamloops Jardine’s Blazers tier 1 players to watch are Kevin Davis, Addison Bazian, Alex Winters and Nick Chyzowski.

Dogs not Lidster representing B.C. best of West The midget AAA Kamloops RiverDogs did not have their best showing at the Best of the West tournament in Kamloops on the weekend. Kamloops opened its tournament with a 6-3 loss to the South Okanagan Minor Baseball Association Tigers on Friday (March 30) evening. Rainy and snowy conditions on Saturday, March 31, did not stop the RiverDogs from playing twice. In the afternoon game, Kamloops fell 9-6 to the Okotoks Dawgs. The Dawgs’ bats caught fire in the seventh inning, when the visitors scored seven runs. Kamloops, in its final round-robin matchup on Saturday night, edged the Langley Blaze 10-9. KGTC athletes strut their stuff There was plenty on the line for four Kamloops Gymnastics and Trampoline Centre (KGTC) athletes at a pair of competitions at the end of March. Scott Nabata competed in his first event — the Kyle Shewfelt Gymnastics Festival in Calgary — since qualifying for the junior national team in May. He won silver allaround, capturing silver medals on the pommel horse and high bar, while winning bronze on the floor, rings and parallel bars. Nabata placed fourth on the vault. “A couple of nagging injuries kept him away from the competition scene for the first few months of the season,” KGTC artistic director John Carroll said. “This was a strong showing for him in his 2012 debut.” While Nabata was in Calgary, Emily Matthew, Jennaya Motokado and Kassia Gifford were competing at the Twisters Invitational Gymnastics Competition in Abbotsford. On the line for the trio were Team B.C. roster spots at the Western Canadian Gymnastics Championships, which run from May 3 to May 5 in Langley. Matthew, competing in the pre-novice aspire 12-and-under

Hockey projects: Women wanted The City of Kamloops is doing its part to introduce women to street and ball hockey. An eight-week — once a week on Monday nights — street-hockey course is scheduled to start on April 16 and wrap up on June 25. “The exciting and energetic sport of street hockey has been played for decades, and now you have an opportunity to try it,” a city press release said. WCT’s next season has a local ﬂavour By Dale Bass STAFF REPORTER dale@kamloopsthisweek.com

When planning the 2012-2013 season, Western Canada Theatre’s artistic director had several goals. First and foremost was to come up with a mix of plays that will have wide appeal, something Daryl Cloran said he’s confident the lineup provides. It was also important to have a local focus not only in those acting, but in the themes of plays. This means next season will see plenty of local actors, including children, along with some who might call Kamloops their second home as they perform here so often.

And, they’ll be acting in some plays that have a definite local flavour. For example, the first play to be staged at Sagebrush in the next season is Where the Blood Mixes by Kevin Loring. Loring’s first play, it’s a story about residential-school survivors — but it’s not all gloom, doom and depression. Rather, Loring has crafted a tale of Floyd and Mooch, who were raised in the schools . Floyd’s daughter returns to their Kumsheen home during the annual salmon run after a couple of decades’ absence and her presence sparks a cascade of memories for the men — some tragic, some truly funny. Cloran said it not only tells a story

Kamloops has experienced, but it is set along the Thompson and Fraser rivers and, in particular, where they also meet. The play won the Governor General’s Award for Drama in 2009. It runs from Oct. 11 to Oct. 20 and is being presented in a partnership with Theatre Aquarius in Hamilton and the Theatre Network in Edmonton. Lorne Cardinal and Craig Lauzon star. Tk’emlups Indian Band is also partnering with WCT on this play, providing rehearsal space in the former residential school for the actors. The first play of the season is at Pavilion Theatre and, while it may not have a local setting, it has a topic with which many

CBC to deal with layoffs ﬁrst, then take a look at new Kamloops ofﬁce By Dale Bass STAFF REPORTER dale@kamloopsthisweek.com

With its application approved and budget cuts that didn’t hit large double-digits, CBC is prepared to go ahead with a radio bureau in Kamloops. First, though, the national broadcaster must deal with staff cuts it needs to make in the wake of a $115-million cut from its budget. “We’re taking some time to analyze our budget reduction in more detail,” said Chuck Thompson, head of media relations for the CBC. “Once we’ve had an opportunity do that, our first priority is to communicate the impact of the cut back to our employees and then in

turn, to a wider audience.” Last week, the Canadian Radiotelevision Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) approved the licence application for an FM station in the River City last week. In its application, the broadcaster said the station will provide a minimum of 12 hours and 30 minutes of programming that will originate in Kamloops each week. The station will also broadcast programming that originates from the national CBC Radio One. The CRTC also approved a CBC request to move transmitters for several communities in the Interior from the Kelowna CBC Radio transmitter to the new

one in Kamloops. Those communities include Blue River, Cache Creek, Williams Lake, Lillooett, Salmon Arm, Mica Dam, Vavenby, among others in the area. Salmon Arm had asked it remain with the Kelowna transmitter — insuring it would continue to receive the Kelowna programming rather than that coming from Kamloops — arguing the community is more closely aligned with the North Okanagan. The CRTC agreed with the request. Thompson said he hoped there would be more information on the location of the Kamloops station, along with staffing, sometime later this week.

Ubuntu soaring theatre Stellar cast tells a compelling story of family, love, tradition — and a ghost the plot, is part of their culture. Later in the play, when the actors are again speaking in Afrikaans and Xhosa, it will seem simply natural as the story unfolds. A collaboration between South African and Canadian actors, Ubuntu is, in its essence, a cross-generational story about family. But, it is so much more. It’s a love story and a ghost story. It’s a reminder that, despite cultural differences, people are still people. It’s a story of a father’s love and a child’s need. There is no one standout in the five-person cast. Tracey Power is the emotional core as Sarah, the student who meets South African Philani in the university library and falls in love. There is one scene in which she will simply break your heart.

O SEE UBUNTU: THE CAPE TOWN PROJECT. Frankly, there is no more succinct way to review this Western Canada Theatre presentation than with those few words. Go see it. You will be amazed, inspired and challenged. You will laugh, cry and leave Sagebrush Theatre in awe of the 95 minutes of theatre you have just sat through. You may even wonder if WCT will ever present another play as impressive as Ubuntu. When the play begins, you may find yourself wondering what you have gotten into, as it starts in South Africa, with actors speaking in their native language and engaged in what, for purposes of not revealing

Andile Nebulane is the engine, the torque that propels the story and he is outstanding. I loved Stacie Steadman as Libby, Sarah’s angry daughter. She firmly anchors her generation’s part of the story. Eric Goulem — wow. Bring him back to WCT more often. He is amazing. Mbulelo Grootboom, as Philani, however, quite simply owns Ubuntu . Your eye is drawn to him whenever he is on the stage. He can be merely sitting in a chair and you know in that simple act exactly what he is telling you. This is theatre at its best. Go see it. Spring Cleaning Street Sweeping Notice Starting in March, weather permitting, City crews will begin spring sweeping of streets in the valley bottom and working into the higher elevations throughout the City. The Spring Sweeping program on average requires 6 to 8 weeks to complete. In an effort to reduce sweeping time and costs, signs will be posted in the areas that are being swept advising the public not to park on the street. Some high density areas will have parking restrictions posted and/or notices delivered in advance of sweeping, for example, downtown east. Residents who wish to sweep the area in front of their property are advised to remove the pile of sand accumulated as these piles can damage a sweeper, and operators are instructed to swerve around such piles. Bringing wild things to kids X From B1

Sebastian Tow, son of WCT’s late artistic director Jeremy Tow, will play Ralphie, the youngster who just wants a red Ryder BB gun for Christmas. His real-life mom, Anita Wittenberg, will play his mother in the play and other young performers from throughout Kamloops will also be part of the cast, Cloran said. It runs at Sagebrush Theatre from Nov. 29 to Dec. 8. The younger set is another audience focus for WCT this year, with the theatre scheduling a play designed for the four- to eight-year-old group. Where The Wild Things Are will be at Pavilion Theatre on Nov. 3 and Nov. 4 and will be an intearactive experience — the kids can wear masks and help Max as his room

Roots and blues reclaims Ryder Serena Ryder returns to the Salmon Arm Roots and Blues Festival as it celebrates its 20th anniversary. Ryder last performed at the annual event in 2009, when she was on the main stage. When it comes to performance, handling and fuel economy, the new Charger is better in

Eight-speed transmissions have only been available on premium import models in the past, some of which cost twice as much as the Charger. This just shows how technology has evolved over the years. So, what’s the advantage of an eight-speed transmission? Improved fuel economy, for starters. Chrysler says the Charger’s fuel consumption decreases by nearly one litre per 100 kilometres with the new transmission, an improvement of eight per cent over last year’s five-speed tranny. Natural Resources Canada fuel-consumption numbers for the car are 7.3L/100 km (39 mpg) highway and 11.4 L/100 km (25 mpg) city. Performance wise, the transmission performs superbly, shifting smoothly and helping bring the car from zero to 100 km/h in just over

seven seconds. If that isn’t fast enough for you, well then, go for the R/T with its 370 horsepower, 5.7-litre Hemi V8 or the SRT8 with its 470 horsepower 6.4-litre Hemi V8. Styling wise, the Charger is a looker with its Coke-bottle shape and distinctive cross-haired grille. The doors are big and open wide for ease of entry, but you really have to stretch out to close them when you plant yourself in those big, wide, supportive seats. The interior is pleasant to the eye, with much better fit and finish than in previous generations. The leather is part of an $2,000 optional package that also includes an interior LED lighting package, heated secondrow seats, heated and cooled front-console cup holder, performance front seats with power adjustment and a security alarm. All in, my tester was priced at $40,570 including delivery and PDI. Base price for the SXT AWD is $35,095. Mine also featured the technology package ($1,025), driver-conve-

Gentle John Cummins? Not really

N AN INTERVIEW WITH ONE OF our Vancouver Island papers before Christmas, B.C. Conservative leader John Cummins made a bold prediction he would have party status before the general election in May 2013. That’s four seats — and it wasn’t based on an unlikely sweep of the ChilliwackHope and Port MoodyCoquitlam byelections, now set for April 19. He hinted he was getting calls from MLAs looking to join up, after a November TOM FLETCHER Angus Reid poll Our Man in showed a sudden VICTORIA surge to 18 per cent for his resurgent brand. We now know one of those callers was Abbotsford-South MLA John van Dongen. I asked Cummins last week if he is still confident about three more. “Hopeful, let’s put it that way,” he replied. Van Dongen’s explosive departure was arranged, with Cummins’ help, for maximum damage to Premier Christy Clark. Van Dongen notified the B.C. Liberal caucus he was quitting.

John van Dongen has hinted other Liberal MLAs may follow him to the B.C. Conservatives.

Then, in a questionable use of legislature privileges, he launched a broadside on Clark’s integrity. He cited the $6-million legal payout in the B.C. Rail sale, a decision made before Clark’s time, and the recent collapse of a deal to sell naming rights to B.C. Place. He described the B.C. Liberals as “an organization headed for failure,” then announced he had joined the B.C. Conservatives. Cummins then greeted van Dongen at a hotel news conference across the street, as

the former Gordon Campbell cabinet minister disclosed he has hired his own lawyer to dig through the roomful of paper from the B.C. Rail case once again. Auditor General John Doyle is already in court seeking access to details of the $6 million in lawyer bills, which the attorney general’s ministry hasn’t provided because it doesn’t have them. These delicate matters were farmed out to yet more independent lawyers. Independent special prosecutor Bill Berardino also spent seven years and many more millions on the B.C. Rail case, including the role of Clark’s lobbyist brother, Bruce. He didn’t find the smoking gun now sought by van Dongen. This effort seems designed more for political revenge in an election year than to clarify the sorry legacy of the B.C. Rail sale that has already been examined through two provincial elections. Van Dongen was at the top of everyone’s list of disgruntled B.C. Liberals. During last year’s leadership contest, he muttered darkly about not only B.C. Rail, but also the integrity of fellow Abbotsford MLA Mike de Jong. Now, Clark is van Dongen’s target, with Cummins standing beside him trying to look statesman-like. Of course van Dongen drove himself out of cabinet long before Clark returned.

Chronic speeding by a public-safety minister is a tough sell. I asked Cummins about the reluctance of key cabinet ministers Kevin Falcon and George Abbott to confirm they are running again. His aw-shucks friendly-grandpa modesty precludes speculation, but he did allow it’s “maybe a comment on the state of affairs in the Liberal caucus.” Reporters started surveying government MLAs after Falcon and Abbott kept their options open for 2013. For the record, fellow ministers Terry Lake, Shirley Bond, Pat Bell, Mary Polak, Rich Coleman and Stephanie Cadieux all said they are firmly on Clark’s election team. Independent-minded backbenchers Bill Bennett and Kevin Krueger also saluted the B.C. Liberal banner. Randy Hawes allowed that he’s 65 so, if he leaves, it will be for the golf course. As I was talking with Cummins, B.C. Conservative advisor Randy White was assuring the Abbotsford News more defections are coming. Cummins has people for the dirty work.
