Rookie winger is producing after learning discipline in the nutrition and fitness departments DanKINVIG ABBOTSFORD NEWS
If Abbotsford Heat fans think they’re noticing a little extra swagger in Ryan Howse’s stride these days, they’re not alone. Heat head coach Troy Ward has picked up on it, too, and he doesn’t mind one bit. Ward would probably feel differently if he thought the rookie right winger’s current sky-high confidence was borne out of an egotistical self-regard. But in light of the adversity he’s waded through and the hard truths he’s accepted this season, the Heat bench boss won’t begrudge Howse a little swagger. “He has a swagger right now because of the work he’s done,” Ward said. “He knows he’s paid the price on a couple different occasions to put himself in this position. Once you pay a price in life, you get a swagger, versus drawing from an ego in the past.” Howse’s development arc has been one of the more fascinating narrative threads in the Heat’s 2011-12 campaign. Last fall, after suiting up for Abbotsford’s first six games of the season, the Prince George native was informed by Ward that he planned to remove him from the lineup for the better part of a month. At the time, Howse tipped the scales at 219 pounds – more than a six-foot hockey player should weigh. Ward wanted to give him a few weeks to focus on building better nutrition habits and fitness under the tutelage of strength coach Mike Thompson, with the goal of being ready to play in the second half of the season. Ward’s tough-love approach could have been a stumbling block for Howse, who had been a scoring machine at
Ryan Howse celebrates after scoring his first career AHL goal on Feb. 18 against the Houston Aeros. Amy Williams Photography the junior level, racking up 51 goals in 70 games with the Western Hockey League’s Chilliwack Bruins in 2010-11. But he swallowed his pride and embraced the discipline. When Howse returned to the lineup in late November, he weighed 205 pounds; these days, he’s an even 200. “He’s a pretty honest guy, Troy,” Howse said. “He told me he believed in me and wanted me to work at it, and I did. “Obviously there were the hard days, days where you’re frustrated and want to be out on the ice. But if I didn’t learn this now, who know if I would have learned it later, or if it would have been too late.” Howse’s second lengthy stint on the sideline was be-
yond his control – he missed five weeks bridging January and February due to a shoulder injury. A couple games into his return from that convalescence, Howse’s stat line contained an awful lot of zeroes – 20 games, and not a single goal or assist to show for it. He finally broke through on Feb. 18 against the Houston Aeros, tipping in a shot by teammate Guillaume Desbiens for his first goal as a professional. Since then, he’s been a been a steady point producer while playing predominantly on the third line. In his last 17 games, he has six goals and two assists. Continued on page 10

Testwuide lends grit to Heat DanKINVIG ABBOTSFORD NEWS
Playing pro hockey for a living is, for the most part, a pretty great gig, but J.P. Testwuide would be quick to testify that it’s not always as glamorous as it looks. Testwuide’s life took a topsyturvy turn at the AHL transaction deadline, when the Chicago Wolves loaned him to the Abbotsford Heat in exchange for fellow blueliner Jordan Henry. The 27-year-old Vail, Colo. native was informed of the deal in the late afternoon on Monday, March 5. The Heat had their inaugural school day game scheduled for 10:30 a.m. the following morning, so Testwuide (pronounced TESTweed) hopped on the first available flight to Vancouver. When he landed late in the evening, he spent a couple hours tracking down some misplaced luggage. When he arrived at customs, he expected that the Calgary Flames would have his work permit paperwork there waiting for him. It wasn’t. By that time, it was 1 a.m., so
Testwuide curled up on a bench outside a Tim Hortons at the airport and caught a few hours’ shut-eye. When the customs office re-opened in the morning, he was first in line. Then he hopped in a taxi and made it to the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre with an hour to spare before the opening faceoff, and he suited up for the Heat’s wild 7-6 shootout loss to the Houston Aeros. “I just wanted to play,” Testwuide explained with a shrug and a grin, reflecting on his own personal Planes, Trains and Automobileslike adventure. “I was excited to come here and help these guys out. It was a fast turnaround, but it was well worth it.” Testwuide’s do-anything-to-play ethic extends to his positional flexibility. He’s listed as a defenceman, but with the Heat lacking depth up front when he arrived, he initially served as a fourth-line winger, and made an impact with his physical Continued on page 13

Race for playoffs is HEATing up!
words from the
Ryan WALTER
prez
At the time of this writing, the Heat sit in fifth spot in the Western Conference, two points behind the third-place Chicago Wolves, but also just two points ahead of the ninth-place position, which doesn’t qualify for the post-season. With a win the Heat would hold the final home ice playoff spot, but a loss would see the six teams within three points gain a game in hand in the tight race for the final five playoff spots. The next eight games will be an amazing, fun race! Four of our final six regular season games will be at home and we have some great theme games for you to enjoy! The theme game philosophy is to create a focus that is either exciting to our fans or honouring to our community, or both! For example, in the spring we hosted Canadian Forces Night, honouring the people who keep us safe. Just recently we brought in Aaron Pritchett, an amazing local country and western star, who added value to our evening with a postgame performance. Many of you know that we brought Lanny McDonald into Abbotsford and are thrilled with the way he added value to our community. Coming up on April 4, our team is excited to be presenting Punjabi Night! I recently visited Abbotsford’s three Punjabi temples with Mayor Bruce Banman and really enjoyed connecting with all the decision-makers

Ben Walter a stalwart for Heat HE
In each edition of the Abbotsford News’s Faceoff Magazine, beat reporter Dan Kinvig chats with head coach Troy Ward about the state of the team. For future editions of Faceoff, fans are invited to pose their own questions for Ward. Submit your questions for consideration via email to sports@abbynews.com, or via Twitter to @dankinvigsports. We spoke with Ward last week prior to a two-game set on home ice vs. the Chicago Wolves.

T
Q Looking at your roster, only one
player has played every game for the Heat this season – Ben Walter. He brings such a steady presence – can you imagine where you’d be without him?
A “Sometimes I think you can tend to
overlook him. It’s like, we all rely on our wives and we never give them enough credit. We just take them with a grain of salt sometimes. She’s there, taking care of the kids, and I’m going to go do my thing. I’m going to be a little tired and I’m going to want a beer when I come home, and she’s still going to do everything. “It’s kind of how I look at Ben – it’s the same scenario in life. We just expect
him to be there and expect him to go lead us and do his thing. At the end of the day, he’s our leader scorer, he’s our leading ice-time player (among forwards), he’s on the power play, and he’s helped out on the penalty kill when we were bruised up at times this year. “He leads the guys off the ice because he’s a father and understands the big picture. He comes from a hockey pedigree, so he doesn’t get too high or too low. He’s been through the wars, so all of a sudden lately, you’re starting to see him emerge. He just quietly goes about his job, and he’s a hell of a man. “That gets overlooked, too, because he doesn’t wear a ‘C’ here. The most neat part about Ben is, he’s done all this without a letter. For me personally, I think the world of the guy, I just don’t think he needs a letter. That’s the highest accolade I can give him. You’ve got guys in there who would wonder why or how come, and this guy just goes about his business.”
Q As far as the playoff race, you’ve
said you don’t talk about the playoffs or the standings with the team. But obviously, it is on players’ minds, and it does mean a lot to the franchise. How do you manage all those
factors?
A “I focus on the process every day. I just
believe in it more than anything in my life. I believe in fundamentals, I believe in details, and I believe in process. “One of my mentors in life is (legendary UCLA Bruins men’s basketball coach) John Wooden. He always said when he was living, ‘I just live every day to finish 1-and-0.’ And that’s how I am. “At first, these guys were a little bit off with my intensity. Because to be honest with you, I think some guys were like, ‘Oh good, Wardo’s going to be our coach. He was a really nice assistant.’ And the really nice assistant hasn’t always turned out to be a really nice head guy, because I’m an intense guy, and I intend to finish every day 1-and-0. “If the game didn’t matter, we wouldn’t keep score. But it obviously matters, so I just look at it like, if we finish more days 1-and-0, at the end of the day, we’ll be where we want to be anyway. I can say it that way without saying, ‘We have to win this game.’ They already know they have to win every day with me.”

Adam Hutchison, a Grade 8 student at Clayburn Middle School, is a ďŹ xture among the media at Heat games, building experience for a future broadcasting career
DanKINVIG ABBOTSFORD NEWS
Not many 14-year-olds can say they know what they want to do when they grow up. Fewer still can say they're already doing it. But that's precisely the position Adam Hutchison ďŹ nds himself in. The Grade 8 student at Clayburn Middle School is a ďŹ xture at Abbotsford Heat games, microphone in hand – covering the local AHL team, shoulder-to-shoulder with the working media. The youngster's presence is certainly unique in the world of pro hockey. But he's hardly intimidated by his surroundings – he fearlessly pipes up with questions at post-game press conferences, and he's done one-on-one interviews with the likes of Heat players Krys Kolanos and Clay Wilson, team president Ryan Walter, Edmonton Oilers executive Kevin Lowe, and Hockey Hall of Famer Lanny McDonald. "I've kind of gotten used to it now, since I've been doing it so much," Hutchison said, reecting on his participation at press conferences. "You've got to think of a question, and if somebody else takes it, you've got to think of another one. You're thinking up stuff g on the spot. But it's something you love to do, and you just do it." Hutchison's involvement at Heat games is the product of a partnership between the hockey team and the Clayburn Film Club. The ďŹ lm club is an extra-cur--
ricular school group run by digital visual arts teacher Mike Haire. It's comprised of about 30 students, and they produce a daily newscast that is broadcast live every morning to each classroom at Clayburn. The ďŹ lm club and the Heat connected for the ďŹ rst time last season. A Clayburn teacher was playing in an intermission game, and he invited Haire and Hutchison to attend and shoot a segment for the middle school news. They did so, and after posting the video on the ďŹ lm club's YouTube channel (youtube.com/cmsďŹ lmclub), Derek Beer, a member of the Heat's front ofďŹ ce staff, happened upon the clip. It's so authentic, and that's the best thing about this." On several occasions, Hutchison's work has been featured on the jumbotron at Heat games – a heady experience for the youngster. With nearly a year of reporting from pro hockey games under his belt, Hutchison says his dream job is to be a TSN reporter or anchor. "I've seen his conďŹ dence get way stronger," Haire said. “It’s a great feeling,” Howse said with a grin. “Things have finally turned around, and it’s almost like I’m being rewarded for the things that happened before.” According to Ward, that’s exactly what’s transpiring. “It’s gone exactly how I’d hoped it would go on paper,” he said, reflecting on Howse’s enforced sabbatical back in the fall. “He deserves 100 per cent of the credit. “The biggest difference for me visually is, he smiles,” Ward added. “And that means things are happening internally where he’s excited to be here. A lot of times in life, you’re pretty confident good things are going to happen if you’ve earned them.” Howse said his improved production of late is no coincidence, given his improved fitness. “Watching clips from earlier in the year, compared to now, I’m just seeing how much quicker I am,” he said. “I’m a step ahead of where I was back then.” As for Ward’s assertion that he’s got some swagger these days, Howse said his teammates have been giving him a good-natured ribbing about it, too. “I’m just having fun, that’s what it is,” he said with a grin. “I’m trying new things in practice, and when everything’s going good, it’s going good. You can walk around with a smile on your face, and just love the game you’re playing.”

You were born in Plymouth, England before moving to Ottawa with your family when you were two years old. Have you ever had an opportunity or inclination to play for England internationally? "I was looking into it, but I guess I have to play over there (in England's pro hockey league) for two years to be eligible to play for Team England. I don't see that happening in the near future. "I go over there every summer, but hockey isn't really at the top of their priority list as far as sports is concerned. I really enjoy it there – my mom's side of the family is over there, and it's good to see everyone."
Q Who's got the worst fashion sense on this team? A "You know what, the guys would probably say me. I don't have much designer stuff, I don't take pride in it. Other guys take pride in their fashion – I'm the last guy you should talk to about that. "As far as other guys, you know what, Pierre-Luc (Letourneau-Leblond) has some pretty bad golf shirts. He needs to spice up his wardrobe a little bit."

Hockey players are renowned for practical jokes. What's the best one you've pulled off, or the best one you've seen? "We had one just the other day. David Eddy was playing his ďŹ rst game for us, and going out for warm-ups, I'm usually the ďŹ rst guy out. But we told Eddy that because it was his ďŹ rst game, he should lead the charge in warm-ups. Desbiens told me to wait, and he goes out there by himself, just wheeling around for about 30 seconds before the rest of the team goes out there. That's a classic one."
Q What product would you endorse if given the opportunity? A "You know what, the guys really rip me for my pair of Velcro shoes that I wear every day. I got them from Walmart. So I guess I'd endorse my Velcro shoes I got for 10 bucks."
Q Besides hockey, which sports trophy would you most like to win? A "March Madness (NCAA men's basketball). That would be the best, I think. The odds of winning it are so low."

Pilots gearing up for B.C.’s DanKINVIG ABBOTSFORD NEWS
As his team prepares to host the Cyclone Taylor Cup provincial championship tournament this month, Abbotsford Pilots head coach Jim Cowden believes it will be a wideopen event. “It doesn’t really matter who has the best team – it matters who plays the best that weekend,” Cowden said, looking ahead to the event, which runs April 12-15 at MSA Arena. “And goaltending’s going to be key – that’s true in any series in the playoffs.” The tourney will feature four teams – the Pilots and the Delta Ice Hawks, finalists from the Pacific International Junior Hockey League, along with the yet-to-be-determined champs from the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League and the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League. At press time, the Pilots and Ice Hawks were locked in an epic battle in the PIJHL final, and win or lose, the Pilots will take a lot of confidence from their strong showing. The Pilots’ Harold Brittain Confer-

can play,” he said. At the Cyclone Taylor Cup, the Pilots should have an edge because they get to sleep at home in their own beds, but Cowden doesn’t think home ice advantage will be a big factor.
“I think it helps somewhat,” he acknowledged. “You just keep communicating with the guys how important it is to get some rest, feed their bodies with the right foods, and prepare themselves to work hard every shift.”
