Spring is upon us, the Northern hemisphere is tilting towards the sun, blossoms are bursting, bulbs are erupting, and we look forward to our first real holiday since Christmas. Like spring, Easter celebrates rebirth and renewal, and all things sweet and chocolate. Everywhere you look there are colorful eggs, bunnies, marshmallow chicks and spring flowers. Hard to believe but about ninety million chocolate bunnies and 16 billion jelly beans are produced for Easter each year. Here are some more things you may not have known about our favorite spring holiday. The tradition of giving eggs at Easter time has been traced back to Persians, Egyptians, Gauls, Greeks and Romans, to whom the egg was a symbol of life and rebirth. Easter is named after Eastre, an Anglo-Saxon goddess. The symbols of the goddess were the hare and the egg. The traditional act of painting eggs is called Pysanka which origininat from the Ukranian word pysaty, meaning, to write. Easter is a truely movable feast and has different dates each year, but always falls between March 22nd and April 25th, on the first Sunday following the full Moon (the Paschal Full Moon) after 21st of ...continued March.

TODAY’S

BIG DEAL!

Open call to artists, 2D, 3D, fine art and photography, for a juried art exhibition called Just Birds at the Newton Cultural Centre, 13530 72 Ave. Deadline for entry is 4 p.m. April 27. Work will be juried May 26 and the show runs June 3-30. More information is available at www.artscouncilofsurrey.com or by emailing info@artscouncilofsurrey.ca or calling 604-594-2700.

Delta Arts Council presents Open Mic on March 30 at 7:30 p.m. at the Firehall Centre for the Arts (11489 84 Ave). MC Patti McGregor invites singers, musicians and actors to take part. This event is like a “backstage club” where performers gather to present new works or maintain their skills. The general public is invited to attend. Doors open at 7 p.m. Admission is $4. For more information, call 604-581-6270.

The art rental and sales program at the Surrey Arts Centre provides the community with easy access to original artwork by local artists. It is an excellent opportunity to experience a wide variety of artworks without great financial commitment. Eighty per cent of the first year’s rent may go towards the purchase if desired. Approximately 120 works are on display and can be selected during gift shop hours. For further information contact 604-501-5564.

More Easter fun-to-know...

The Peace Arch Spinners and Weavers Guild meets the second Monday of each month at 10 a.m. at the Surrey Museum. Call Linda at 604-589-1087 or Elly at 604-576-8816 for more information.

The first chocolate eggs were made in Europe in the early 1800s and still are one of the most popular treats associated with Easter. Finally it’s confirmed, 76% people bite off the chocolate bunny ears first, while 5% bite the feet first and 4% eat the tail first. According to the Guinness Book of World Records the largest Easter egg ever made was just over 25 feet high, supported by an internal metal frame, made of chocolate and Marshmallow and weighed 8,968 lbs. The world’s largest jar of jelly beans weighed 6,050 pounds. Not surprisingly, Easter is the top-selling confectionery holiday in the west, second only to Halloween. Happy Easter!

The Rotary Club of Fraser Heights presents An Evening of Musical Excellence April 1 at 7:30 p.m. at the Chandos Pattison Auditorium, 10238 168 St. Featuring the Fraser Heights Secondary Jazz Band, Korea Singers, Youth Joy Choir, Muse Korean Youth Symphony Choir, the Korean Youth Drum Team and other performers. Tickets are $30 for adults, $20 for students and $5 for children under 10, with proceeds benefiting various Rotary-supported charity projects. Call the 24-hour ticket hotline at 1-800-838-3006.
