Downtown plan soon to be an open book BY VALERIE ROSSI Times Staff

Noise over the state of Trail’s downtown has been hushed by a much-anticipated plan that will look at revitalizing the city’s core. While the public waits to find out what recommendations MMM Group Limited’s $85,000 study has in mind, members of the Downtown Opportunities and Action Committee (DOAC) have already had a sneak peak and Trail council will get its look this month. “The plan will address many of the long-standing issues but we didn’t get to this place overnight and we won’t get out of it overnight,” said Trail councillor Kevin Jolly, who is also chair of the DOAC. “But what we will have is a clear pathway to move forward as a community and a plan our citizens can get behind.” Jolly said many of the suggestions made by the consultant firm related back to points brought up at a meeting held last October, when 75 attending residents weighed in on what they liked about their city’s core and where improvements needed to be made. While a preliminary report is available on the city’s website at this time, Jolly won’t disclose much about the plan until it’s officially presented to the public, shortly after the April 10 Trail council closed-door presentation. “There is going to be a sort of

heritage theme, an industrial theme, in certain places,” he said. “We’re going to work toward greening the downtown space as much as we can, improving downtown guidelines around any sort of renovations and making full utilization of the riverfront as best we can.” He also noted a simple investment in signage could go a long way in attracting the traveling public. “We want to make sure that people are clear that when they come down the highway, they don’t just see green lights and keep going, they see very well-marked signage that steers them to where we want them to go and draws them into the downtown core.” Trail has set aside $100,000 in its draft budget for DOAC projects, which will be presented in the plan, under its capital program. Other bigticket capital expenditures include about $256,000 for Phase 3 of city hall renovations; nearly $360,000 for upgrades to the Trail Memorial Centre and almost $2.9 million for work – including heating, ventilation and air conditioning improvements – at the Trail Aquatic and Leisure Centre. The preliminary document can be downloaded from the city’s website by selecting the “Downtown Opportunities and Action Planning Committee” and then selecting the “Downtown Revitalization Plan.”

New regional sewer proposal aims to avoid costly arbitration BY VALERIE ROSSI Times Staff

Trail has flushed its preferred solution to regional sewer cost apportionment in hopes of solidifying a deal with its partners. The city has taken one last plunge at coming to an agreement with Warfield and Rossland on a matter that has been under dispute since 2008 in hopes of avoiding arbitration. Trail has drafted a proposal

based on population though it previously agreed with a mediator report that suggested a new formula should be based on 50 per cent population and 50 per cent water consumption. “We’ve made one last attempt to try to get this resolved,” said Trail councillor Robert Cacchioni. “That way we can do two things. One, we can put this thing to bed about conflicts between communities and

Student numbers continue to fall BY TIMOTHY SCHAFER Times Staff

Class size numbers are on a downward spiral in School District 20. The Class of 2012 could be one of the largest graduating classes the school district will see for a few years as the number of school-aged children continues to drop in the Kootenay Columbia region. According to figures released by SD20 administration, 346 students are set to graduate

this year, compared to only 336 Grade 11s, and 323 Grade 10s. With the Ministry of Education tying its funding formula to the number of students a district possesses, the situation is of concern if the number of students continues to dwindle. To make matters worse, school trustee Toni Driutti noted there were only 277 students enrolled in kindergarten this year. “It looks like we are going to enter into crisis here … that

means those are the total graduates for the whole of the district,” she said. With the district losing 40 students from its graduating class within the next three years — and over 60 in the next decade — the enrolment situation is not improving and could force the school district to consider more cuts. The numbers grow bleaker with 318 Grade 9 students and 306 students in Grade 8, and all

The future may not be improving too much as kindergarten enrollment is down with 250 kids signed up for next year, said Greg Luterbach, superintendent of schools. Originally the school district projected 296 kindergart-

en students for next year, but recently had to revise it down to 286. “Typically, we won’t pick up another 46 students and even 36 will be a stretch,” he said. Overall enrolment figures for the year have remained steady since the first figures were released in September, with 3,969 students enrolled throughout the district in all programs.

City awaits response FROM PAGE 1 at least show that we’re rational human beings and come to some sort of agreement and two, we can eliminate the cost of arbitration.” The city awaits a response from its partners after following up an adhoc meeting with a signed proposal in writing. “At this point I’m just hopeful that we can get together and have a discussion, to me that’s the place to start,” said Rossland councillor Kathy Wallace, who sits on the regional board. “Binding arbitration could be very expensive and we may still not see any real resolve come out of it so I don’t see that as a good approach to dealing with the situation.” Wallace said Rossland’s last counterproposal, which was not reported by consultant George Paul of Community Solutions Incorporated, suggested using a population formula for a portion of operating costs while still investigating how to best

cover capital costs. Trail is currently paying close to 70 per cent of the regional budget following a formula created in the late 1960s, which is based mostly on population and projected growth. The mediator hired on to investigate a fair solution found the old formula “flawed.” “Under the original agreement, each community purchased a certain amount of capacity and given that all of our populations have declined since then, none of us have fully utilized our capacity in the plant,” added Wallace. “And that capacity is still sufficient and as we get into our liquid waste management plan, it looks like the current capacity would actually carry us forward for another 20 years or so.” The Regional District of Kootenay Boundary has recommended the matter go to the province for a resolution.

Clean-up continues after derailment BY GREG NESTEROFF Nelson Star

CP Rail officials expected to have a better idea Monday when and how they will remove an excavator that ended up in Kootenay Lake following a derailment last week. Around 3 p.m. Friday, a rockslide struck a small work train six kilometres east of Atbara, along the south shore between Nelson and Procter. CP spokesman Ed Greenberg

says one of the locomotives and a flat car carrying the excavator left the tracks. The excavator was dislodged, slid down the bank, and into the lake. Neither the conductor nor engineer was injured. Crews and equipment were brought in to clear the rock, repair the track, and put the locomotive back on the rails. “The locomotive was re-railed late Saturday, and once the neces-

sary track repairs and mandatory inspections were completed, the line was re-opened Sunday,” Greenberg says. Plans are now being made to put the flat car back on the tracks and to pull the excavator out of the lake. An environmental consultant is at the scene, monitoring the area where the excavator sits. No leaks are apparent, but containment booms are in place.

Rossland businesses voice parking concerns BY ARNE PETRYSHEN Rossland News

Council had to delay discussions on the Columbia Avenue project last week, as there are still no hard numbers back from tender. While the tender was supposed to close on March 23, it will now likely be delayed until the beginning of April, the CAO said this happens quite often. Despite that, there were a number of residents and business owners that addressed council on the issue of parallel parking. John Greene, owner of Rossland Hardware, once again voiced his

opposition to the parking. “There’s been opposition to this idea since last spring,” Greene said. “Plenty of time for the city to listen and exclude this aspect from the bidding process. Parallel parking has not been excluded.” Greene asked council to “preserve the parking and heritage of our main street.” Lisa Wegner spoke on behalf of the Legacy Gift Shop’s Roseanne Chobanuk, who she said was opposed to parallel parking. “Her main concern is the preservation of the footprint of Columbia Avenue,” Wegner said, saying that she would like to see

a focus on enhancing the East and West ends of Columbia Avenue rather than the centre block. Bill Mickelthwaite spoke as, saying he agreed with the “widespread opposition of what appears to be expensive parallel parking to create a wider sidewalk that’s going to be useless and a burden to us for the greater part of the year.” Mickelthaite added that at the same time it would sacrifice much of the parking that people use to park and do business downtown. He was concerned that the city was ignoring the public, namely the 616 signatures opposed to the

parking style. Mayor Greg Granstrom countered that they were taking the issues into consideration, but would not be discussing the project yet as the tender and the hard numbers are not back yet. He said that though they did have a resolution to have committee of the whole meeting, it would be prudent to discuss the facts without any actual numbers. So council moved to have the committee meeting once they have some numbers. Renee Clark from the Chamber of Commerce presented feedback from downtown merchants on the

project. Clark delivered questionnaires to members and non members do the Chamber between March 13-16, and received 27 responses. Respondents said that parallel parking is less convenient, takes time and could back up traffic on the street. There were things that businesses liked about project, such as safer crossings, increased off street parking and new pavement. There biggest concern was construction phase, where they predict business revenue to go down and decreased traffic flow.

Premature news release spoils Hockeyville announcement West Kelowna finishes second in CBC-Kraft competition BY WADE PATERSON Kelowna Capital News

Just before 8 p.m. on Saturday, Gary Bettman announced that Stirling-Rawdon, ON was the winner of Kraft Hockeyville 2012. But many of those watching the announcement at Royal LePage Place in West Kelowna had known the result for hours. A news release, issued by PR Newswire, was sent out early Saturday claiming that Stirling-Rawdon had beaten out West Kelowna and the other three challengers to win the Hockeyville title, which includes $100,000 in arena upgrades and the opportunity to host an NHL exhibition game this fall. According to Internet reports, the official press release was supposed to be sent out at 10:45 p.m. Eastern time; however, it was accidentally sent out at 10:45 a.m. by the newswire service. Upon hearing about the leak, West Kelowna Hockeyville co-chairs Adam Less and Andrew Deans attempted to confirm the news with Kraft and CBC; however, the companies remained tight-lipped about the situation. As time went on, it became more and more obvious to Less and Deans that the rumour was true. “Today’s feeling was just like going into a game seven, but knowing you lost already,”

I just could not do that—today was a rough day. “We worked so hard and I just kind of wanted to enjoy today with the community. Adam and I didn’t get that chance.” Deans said that he hopes there might be some sort of repercussion for the way the news leaked early.

“We’re definitely going to write a letter to CBC and ask why it had to be this way.” Deans said that despite the unfortunate incident, he was proud of his community and the Hockeyville campaign. According to Less, “pride” is also what was running through his mind moments after the announcement. “I’m incredibly proud of the community I live in; I’m incredibly proud of the support that they’ve given us,” said Less. He added that with over 2.7 million votes, West Kelowna earned the second highest tally in Hockeyville history. But, unfortunately, they were up against a community that received over 3.9 million votes. Less said that, after hearing the news about the winner and learning it was legitimate, he found it tough to be “disingenuous” with the community. “It’s unfortunate that (for) such an amazing competition, such an amazing experience, the results had to come out that way. “But, despite all of that, it’s been an amazing run.” West Kelowna Mayor Doug Findlater agreed that the Westside has been nationally recognized for its hockey pride. He said he was a bit puzzled by the news leak, but refused to lose all hope before hearing the official announcement. “It seems odd. This is a pretty sophisticated corporate effort when it comes to Kraft and CBC, so it seems very odd there would be a mistake like that. I guess I held out a little bit of hope.”

border. Specific provincial project announcements are promised in the weeks to come. Instead the premier’s event focused on private sector investments from the host company Neptune Terminals and others, which are gearing up to meet demand from Asian customers. “Neptune Terminals’ strategic investments have resulted in record terminal exports of potash and steelmaking coal, a 20-per-cent increase in jobs at our terminals, and significant additional growth to come as we complete our expansions,” said Neptune president James Belsheim. Teck Resources CEO Don Lindsay also took part in the event, reviewing the mining company’s $1 billion investment over the last two years to expand production of metallurgical coal, copper and zinc. Jock Findlayson of the Business Council of B.C. said the province’s exports to China grew by 27 per cent in 2011 alone, and shipments of coal, minerals and forest products to Asia are expected to double by 2020. NDP transportation critic Harry Baines dismissed the announcement as the latest media event staged by Clark to promote her jobs plan. “There are no specific details where this money is going to go,” Bains said of the provincial contribution. “It’s more about a photo op than getting their hands dirty to have a real job plan for British Columbians.” Bains said $700 million over five years is $140 million a year. At $5 million per kilometre, that amounts to 28 km of new or expanded per year, he said.

PEOPLE OBITUARIES KERAIFF, GEORGE (BIG G) — It is with great sadness that the family of George Keraiff announces his passing on March 28, 2012. He was born on January 18, 1943 in Nelson, BC. George leaves behind his wife Diana, his sons Kevin (Kerry) and Darin (Sasha), brothers Bill, Walter, and brother-in-law Dorie Bordin and all immediate families and relatives. He was predeceased by his parents William and Tina, his sister Helen, his brother Nick and daughter Tana. He grew up in Castlegar and moved to Trail to raise his family. In his earlier years he played hockey and fastball. He also played bass guitar in bands throughout the Kootenays and was proud to appear on some vinyl records which are still enjoyed today by his family. George was very much involved and supportive with sports with his family and they regularly went on hockey and softball trips. He spent many weekends camping at his favorite spots throughout the Kootenays including Mirror Lake, Green City, and the Christian Valley. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed picking mushrooms and huckleberries. Other activities included fishing, golfing, curling, and cross country skiing. George also loved spending time in his yard gardening and making sure all of the lines were straight. He was very well known in the neighborhood for his three O’clock beer break. Over the years he was always willing to share his cheese and ham with his four legged grand-dogs Meeka, Kyla and Rio. George worked at and retired from Cominco as a steel fabricator which enabled him to raise and support a loving family. He will be missed dearly and we will continue to smile as he is thought of regularly. By request, there will not be a funeral service. At least, that’s what he told a Montreal radio personality who was pretending to be the film’s awardwinning actor Jean Dujardin. The notorious comedy duo known as the Masked Avengers called up Sheen two weeks after the Oscars and asked him if he would like to be in a sequel. The actor congratulated “Dujardin� on his Oscar win and said he’d love to work with him. The Montreal pranksters have engaged in stunts involving Bill Gates, Britney Spears, Paul McCartney and, perhaps most famously, Sarah Palin during the 2008 U.S. election. “Dujardin� told Sheen the follow-up to “The Artist� would be a comedy and the proceeds would go to a good cause. Speaking in a thick accent and at times switching to French, he told Sheen the money be donated to a foundation against dictators, including “(Premier) Jean Charest in Quebec, of course.� Money would also be donated to the striking students in Quebec. Sheen replied he couldn’t understand what was said, but that he was very interested in working with “Dujardin,� even if it meant travelling to Paris. The conversation ended without the hoax being revealed.

A kind and gentle John Cummins? Not really

I

n an interview with one of our Vancouver Island papers before Christmas, B.C. Conservative leader John Cummins made a bold prediction that he would have party status before the general election in May 2013. That’s four seats, and it wasn’t based on an unlikely sweep of the ChilliwackHope and Port MoodyCoquitlam by-elections, now set for April 19. He hinted he was getting calls from MLAs looking to join up, after a November Angus Reid poll showed a sudden surge to 18 per cent for his resurgent brand. We now know that one of those callers was Abbotsford South MLA John van Dongen. I asked Cummins on Friday if he is still confident about three more. “Hopeful, let’s put it that way,” he replied. Van Dongen’s explosive departure was arranged, with Cummins’ help, for maximum damage to

Premier Christy Clark. Van Dongen notified the B.C. Liberal caucus that he was quitting. Then, in a questionable use of legislature privileges, he launched a broadside on Clark’s integrity. He cited the $6-million legal payout in the B.C. Rail sale, a decision made before Clark’s time, and the recent collapse of a deal to sell naming rights to B.C. Place. He described the B.C. Liberals as “an organization headed for failure,” then announced he’s joined the B.C. Conservatives. Cummins then joined van Dongen at a hotel news conference across the street, as the former Gordon Campbell cabinet minister disclosed he has hired his own lawyer to dig through the roomful of paper from the B.C. Rail case once again. Auditor General John Doyle is already in court seeking access to details of the $6 million in lawyer bills, which the Attorney

FLETCHER B.C. Views General’s ministry hasn’t provided because it doesn’t have them. These delicate matters were farmed out to yet more independent lawyers. Independent special prosecutor Bill Berardino also spent seven years and many more millions on the B.C. Rail case, including the role of Clark’s lobbyist brother, Bruce. He didn’t find the smoking gun now sought by van Dongen. This effort seems designed more for political revenge in an election year than to clarify

the sorry legacy of the B.C. Rail sale that has already been examined through two provincial elections. Van Dongen was at the top of everyone’s list of disgruntled B.C. Liberals. During last year’s leadership contest, he muttered darkly about not only B.C. Rail, but also the integrity of fellow Abbotsford MLA Mike de Jong. Now Clark is van Dongen’s target, with Cummins standing beside him trying to look statesman-like. Of course van Dongen drove himself out of cabinet long before Clark returned. Chronic speeding by a public safety minister is a tough sell. I asked Cummins about the reluctance of key cabinet ministers Kevin Falcon and George Abbott to confirm they are running again. His aw-shucks friendly-grandpa modesty precludes speculation, but he did allow it’s “maybe a comment on the state of

affairs in the Liberal caucus.” Reporters started surveying government MLAs after Falcon and Abbott kept their options open for 2013. For the record, fellow ministers Terry Lake, Shirley Bond, Pat Bell, Mary Polak, Rich Coleman and Stephanie Cadieux all said they are firmly on Clark’s election team. I ndependent-minded backbenchers Bill Bennett and Kevin Krueger also saluted the B.C. Liberal banner. Randy Hawes allowed that he’s 65, so if he leaves it will be for the golf course. As I was talking with Cummins, B.C. Conservative advisor Randy White was assuring the “Abbotsford News” that more defections are coming. Cummins has people for the dirty work. NEW YORK - He’s known for his comedic insults, but Don Rickles will be complimented when he receives a special honour at the second annual Comedy Awards this month. The 85-year-old has been chosen to receive the Johnny Carson Award for Comedic Excellence. Jon Stewart will present Rickles with the award. Rickles credits Carson for giving him his big break on “The Tonight Show” when he first appeared in 1965. He went on to be a frequent guest, appearing more than 100 times and would even fill-in for Carson. Rickles is the second recipient of the award. Last year it went to David Letterman. The Comedy Awards will take place April 28 and will air on Comedy Central on May 6. The event celebrates the world of comedy from stand-up to film to TV.

Has the B.C. government been misleading its citizens? In light of the recent resignation of 17 year veteran Liberal MLA John van Dongen from the Liberal caucus and party citing a lack of integrity in leadership in the Liberal government, many of us are wondering if BC’s governments and ministers have intentionally mislead us. BC’s governments and ministers: – “Gave� our Premier a 53% front-end-loaded (all in one year) salary increase in 2007 and “Net-Zero� for the rest of us after that. – “Gave� Deputy Minister of Education, James Gorman, a 40% raise in salary between 2006 and 2011 ($164,085 to $228,942); and, Education Ministry Superintendent, Rick Davis, a $432,234 Expense Allowance (that’s a lot of lunches) between 2006-2011. – “Took� 275 mil-

lion plus dollars a year from public education budgets for 10 years in a row. – “Found� over 600 million dollars for the BC Place stadium roof. – Profess to place “Families First� but can’t “find� any money for children. BC continues to remain #1 in child poverty in Canada for the 8th year in a row. – Created “losing� school districts this year by changing education funding formulas and now have Boards scrambling to deal with growing budget shortfalls which mean further cuts in educational programs and services. – Increased funding for private schools in BC by 2.6 times more than for public schools over a five year period (2006-11). Take one guess which Premier’s kid attends private school? – Reduced funding

of public education by 42.56% over the last two decades as a percentage of total provincial budget expenditures. – Proudly introduced the “harshest� budget in over 30 years even though BC’s economy is growing. – Trying to stop “leakage� to the BC Conservative Party by inadequately funding Health, Education and Social Services in the name of “ultrafiscal restraint� but just announced $700,000,000 of new spending on new infrastructure. – Continue to advance a pro-business and economic growth agenda but shortchange the education budget and fail to see that investing in the education of our future business leaders, now, makes sound economic sense. – Appear to have no

respect for contracts, teachers, public education, workers’ rights, and court findings, the “Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms� or “The Rule of Law�. – Profess to support business and economic growth but fail to comprehend that failure to respect Contract Law and “The Rule of Law� could cause economic chaos and is a hallmark of tyrannical and undemocratic societies. – Continue to advance a “Neo-liberal� agenda of contractstripping and unionbusting by passing Bill 22 despite having the Supreme Court of Canada characterize similar attempts in Bills 27 and 28 in 2002 as “draconian�. Now they want to fine teachers up to $20,000,000 per day for standing up against Bill 22. Is it possible that we have been intentionally misled by BC’s govern-

Graduated licences for seniors proposed THE CANADIAN PRESS TORONTO - Canada’s leading general medical journal is calling for a graduated licensing system for the country’s seniors, but the suggestion isn’t sitting well with at least one elderly driver. An editorial published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal Monday says some seniors keep driving as they age despite “substantial physical or mental deterioration.� The piece points to data from 2009 showing more seniors died in fatal vehicle crashes than any other age group and goes on to suggest a graduated licensing system - like what new drivers work through - to help protect elderly Canadians and others on the road. “The main motivation here is that road trauma is a serious cause of death and disability in seniors throughout Canada,� said Donald Redelmeier, a professor of medicine at the University of Toronto who coauthored the editorial. “It amounts to about one death per day in the country amongst individuals over the age of 65.� While acknowledging that many seniors are “perfectly fine and skilled drivers,� Redelmeier said advanced technology in cars which make driving easier and the general aging of the population increases the risk of having medically unfit elderly drivers on the roads.

Regulations currently in place across much of the country require physicians to report patients who are likely to be a hazard on the road based on medical conditions. Some provinces also require drives to be re-tested once they reach a certain age. In Ontario, for example, residents 80 and over need to renew their licence every two years and must pass a visual and multiple-choice test on road safety before attending a group education session to brush up on their skills. The problem with the existing regulations, said Redelmeier, is that many doctors often don’t report patients who might pose a risk on the road. Redelmeier says such a graduating licensing program might place restrictions on night-time driving, high-speed roads and blood alcohol concentration. The latest editorial suggests a full driver’s licence automatically default to a restricted one when seniors reach a certain age - which has yet to be determined. At that point, capable elderly drivers can regain full driving privileges by getting a physician to certify their good health. “The big point of our article is to reframe the clinical interaction, put it in a positive light specifically as physicians endorsing a full driver’s licence rather than physicians imposing a restricted driver’s licence,� said the

51-year-old Redelmeier. “Most senior drivers are perfectly fine and capable and should be allowed to continue driving...The issue is that there are a few individuals out there that contribute to a disproportionate number of very serious crashes.� The CMAJ’s graduated licensing suggestion isn’t impressing at least one senior, who has written a commentary in the journal defending older drivers. “I don’t really understand why such a superficial notion would be advanced by such an august body,� said Ezra Hauer, who has researched road safety for years. The 79-year-old argues that seniors are no different from non-seniors when it comes to road safety and points to data showing the over-representation of older Canadian victims disappearing when figures from all road accidents - and not just fatal ones - are examined. “We are more frail. We die more easily when we are hit as pedestrians, we die more easily when we are involved in a crash,� he said. “This brittleness of our bones has nothing to do with our ability to drive safely.� The editorial itself suggests that physicians use external tools which are being “actively studied� to help in their fitnessto-drive determinations, but Hauer notes that such tools simply don’t exist at present.

The Beaver Valley Nitehawks took care of business on Sunday, routing Kelowna Chiefs four games to none in the finals of the KIJHL Championship. After making a stunning comeback in Game 3 on Saturday to win 5-4, the Nitehawks finished off the Chiefs 4-2 to capture their sixth title. The Hawks next play in the Cyclone Taylor Cup for the B.C. Championship beginning Apr. 12 in Abbotsford.

Nanaimo hosts first event

NANAIMOThe Canadian Junior Hockey League and Nanaimo Clippers held a Press Conference to introduce the community, media and fans to the newly formed Western Canada Cup and welcome the executives from the four western leagues to the host city. “We are incredibly excited to be awarded the opportunity to bring the inaugural Western Canada Cup to the city of Nanaimo, our loyal fans, and corporate sponsors”, stated Nanaimo Clippers owner Ken Wagner. “The Western Canada Cup will be a fantastic opportunity for us to showcase our beautiful city and province. It creates an equally exciting opportunity to showcase Western Canada’s top hockey talent to our deserving fans. CJHL Chairman Kirk Lamb believes the new regional playoff format will increase exposure for the athletes and further highlight Junior A hockey across Canada.

Success follows former Smokies DeKeyser chooses education over NHL BY TIMES STAFF Former Trail Smoke Eater and current Western Michigan Broncos defenceman Dan DeKeyser, one of the most sought-after free agents in NCAA hockey, has decided to return to college for another year. DeKeyser tweeted his decision last week, following much speculation on the highly touted player. According to the Windsor Star, the Detroit Red Wings were believed to be the favourite to land the Michigan native. “He’s only played two years of college,” Wings assistant general manager Jim Nill said. “I know education is important to him. Probably every team is talking to him, asking him to turn pro.” The 21-year-old DeKeyser played last year for Detroit assistant coach Jeff Blashill at WMU. He also knows the Nill family from his playing days with Nill’s son. However, Nill said just because of those ties he didn’t think the Wings necessarily had any inside edge. “He loves the Detroit Red Wings,

but he might like another team too.” Nill said. Nill describes the six-footthree, 186-pound DeKeyser as a stay-athome defenceman who moves the puck well. “He’s got great potential,” Nill said. “He’s got great size, but has to get stronger.” DeKeyser had five goals, 16 points and was a plus-15 in 40 games this season. He was selected to the CCHA’s second All-Star Team. He played the 2008-09 season with the Smoke Eaters, in which he played in 58 games, scoring eight goals and 17 assists on his way to being named Trail’s defenceman of the year. He played the 2009-10 season with the Sioux City Muskateers of the United States Hockey League. Another Smokie and Dekeyser teammate was also recognized this week for his great play in the NCAA. Ex-Smoke Eater and current Iowa State University junior, Brandon Clark, was honoured with best defenseman and MVP awards. He was also named as next year’s Captain of the Cyclones, at the end-of-season announcement last week.

A pair of cool katas from Beaver Valley Recreation Karate Dojo joined 150 other participants from across B.C. and Alberta in the 2010 Chito-Ryu Friendship Tournament in Penticton on the weekend. It was the first competition for Meagan Campsall and Macy Verigin, but the two young apprentices had an excellent showing, placing fourth and sixth place respectively. “Macy and Meagan showed an enormous amount of courage to participate in their first ever karate tournament,” said Sensei Scott Hutcheson of the B. V. dojo. “They performed their best Kata for a judging panel . . . and while the girls never captured a medal they accomplished their goals they set for themselves and that is incredibly hard to do especially in their first competition.” Chito-Ryu karate goes back to the eighth and ninth century to the Tang Dynasty in China and was first developed by Tsuyoshi Chitose and introduced to Canada in 1958 by Sensei Tsuruoka. A kata is a series of approximately 20-70 karate movements, a sequence of motions steeped in a thousand-year tradition of self-defense, artistry, ethics and precision, that the practitioner attempts to execute with perfect form. Judging is based on the ability of a karate practitioner to perform these intricate movements with grace and fluidity. The dynamic duo also had an opportunity to meet up with Sensei Chris Taneda and current ladies national Kumite champion, Clair Booth. Taneda is a seventh-degree black belt, six-time Canadian Kumite champion and four-time World Chito-Ryu champion. Sensei Taneda is head of Chito-Ryu in Canada and a descendant of the Satsuma Samurai Clan depicted in the film “The Last Samurai.” KarateBC and Karate Canada organize competitions throughout the year ranging from semicontact to full-contact karate and has been named a trial sport in the upcoming Olympics.

Clock ticking on regular season races THE CANADIAN PRESS Time is ticking on those left with work to do before the end of the NHL’s regular season. All 30 teams close out their schedule with games on Saturday and there is plenty still at stake before that happens, from playoff spots to year-end awards to personal milestones. Here’s a closer look at what to keep an eye on in the coming days: PLAYOFF RACES The Western Conference race is almost too tight to handicap. With Calgary being eliminated over the weekend, five teams were left fighting for three spots - Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Jose, Dallas and Colorado. A homeand-home series between the Sharks and Kings to end the season looms particularly large, with final seedings unlikely to be determined until the final day. In the Eastern Conference, Buffalo is on life support after consecutive losses. The ninthplace Sabres entered play Monday sitting two points back of Washington and five behind Florida. They’ll need to win all three remaining games and get some help to make the playoffs. Pittsburgh enters the week one point up on Philadelphia and a season-ending meeting between them on Saturday will likely determine whether their series starts at Consol Energy Center or Wells Fargo Center.

Both the Penguins and Flyers fancy themselves as Stanley Cup contenders. And they’re far from alone. “I think any team going into the playoffs can win the Stanley Cup, there’s no question about it,” said veteran Flyers forward Jaromir Jagr. “History proves it, even if you’re the last team in the playoffs. ... Anything can happen, anybody can win. “Why not us?” It’s the kind of rhetorical question that will be raised in dressing rooms all over the continent at the end of the week. AWARDS Will the Presidents’ Trophy go to Vancouver, the Rangers or St. Louis? The Canucks are looking to become the NHL’s first back-toback regular-season champions since the lockout and enter the week tied with New York at 107 points, one ahead of the Blues. They each have three games to play. For all intents and purposes, the major star-based individual hardware has already been claimed. Pittsburgh Penguins centre Evgeni Malkin is a lock to win his second Art Ross Trophy for leading the scoring chart while Steven Stamkos of the Tampa Bay Lightning has already started engraving his name on the Rocket Richard Trophy for a second time after lapping his

competitors in goal-scoring. Ottawa Senators defenceman Erik Karlsson is down to three games to bolster his alreadystrong case for the Norris Trophy. A trio of players are still fighting for the rookie scoring lead, which could affect how members of the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association vote on the Calder Trophy. Edmonton’s Ryan NugentHopkins and Colorado’s Gabriel Landeskog entered Monday one point ahead of New Jersey’s Adam Henrique. The Blues goalie tandem of Jaroslav Halak and Brian Elliott are certain to claim the Williams M. Jennings Trophy for having allowed the fewest goals against. MILESTONES Stamkos has developed into the game’s best sniper and is looking to put an exclamation mark on his season by hitting 60 goals. Starting with a game against Washington on Monday night, he needed four goals in his final four games to reach the mark. “It definitely would be nice because you never know if you are every going to be this close again in your career,” Stamkos told the Tampa Tribune. Alex Ovechkin is the only NHLer to hit the mark in the last 15 years (he scored 65 in 2007-08).

BASEL, Switzerland - Canada’s Glenn Howard posted two more victories Monday to remain unbeaten at the world men’s curling championship. Howard beat Norway’s Thomas Ulsrud 8-3 in the morning draw before defeating Jiri Snitil of the Czech Republic 9-3 in the evening. Canada remained tied with Sweden for first place at 5-0 after eight draws of round-robin play. “I sense the confidence is getting bigger and bigger,” Howard said. “I felt really comfortable out there again tonight. My guys are making everything underneath me.” The Czech game was tighter than the result might suggest. Howard entered the ninth end with just a two-point lead and hit a nice double takeout to score four points to end it. Howard and teammates Wayne Middaugh, Brent Laing and Craig Savill shot an impressive 91 per cent

in both victories. The Czechs provided a much stiffer test than the Norwegians. Ulsrud, the 2010 Olympic silver medallist, never got on track and made several uncharacteristic errors. “We kept putting pressure on him and he was missing,” Howard said. “The recipe for a win.” A back injury to skip Niklas Edin hasn’t hampered Sweden’s performance. Sebastian Kraupp has filled in nicely and guided the rink to a 10-8 win over France to keep pace with Canada. Another medal favourite, Scotland’s Tom Brewster, was in third place along with the surprising Liu Rui of China at 4-1. Norway is one of four teams tied at 2-3 while the other rinks are even at 1-4. After a slow opening weekend, attendance picked up Monday night with an estimated 1,800 spectators on hand at the 9,000-seat venue. The host Swiss team rewarded the fans with a 9-4 win over Germany.

Smiley named to All-Rookie team FROM PAGE 11 The Central States Collegiate Hockey Association (CSCHA) also named the Spokane native to the all-league team and the all-defensive team. Clark played 44 games for Trail during the 2008-09 season, netting 8 goals and 12 assists. This season with the ISU Cyclones, Clark scored eight times and added 24 helpers in just 42 games. Trail’s 2010-11 all-star goalie Kiefer Smiley, was named to the Southern Professional Hockey League All-Rookie Team after registering 19 wins, two losses and two ties this season, for a 2.48 GAA, and a .907 save percentage with the Mississippi Surge.

In his two seasons in Trail, Smiley won 35 games, posting a .338 GAA and .898 save percentage in 85 games. From the same 2010-11 Trail Smokie squad, Cullen Bradshaw helped the NCAA Div. III St. Norbert College to the national championship. It’s the second title in as many years for the Green Knights, beating Oswego State 4-1 in the tournament final to claim the championship. St. Norbert topped their division with a 21-5-5 record and Bradshaw finished second in scoring in his freshman year with 8 goals, 22 assists for 30 points in 31 games. In his only season with the Smokies, Bradshaw finished third in scoring with 30-33-63 in 60 games.

Alcohol a problem for more people than one might think Dear Annie: I want to share a personal story that I decided to be very public about: I’m a recovering alcoholic. The irony of my situation is that I made a successful career out of writing about using alcohol to cope with the stresses of parenthood in books and in my Web column. Then one morning I woke up with the hangover from hell (I actually ended up in the emergency room), and that was literally the turning point: I got the message loud and clear that my life was a mess, and alcohol was making it that way. I remember when I “’fessed up” to the readers of my blog, “Baby on Bored.” I was terrified that they’d think I was this enormous hypocrite. Instead, I got countless responses from women thanking me and recounting their own stories about their secret drinking. April 5, 2012, is National Alcohol

What is the best way to handle this without issuing an ultimatum? -Bride’s Parents Dear Parents: If you are not footing the bill, you don’t have much say. Not to mention, this could be a way for the groomsmen to save money. If you are paying for everything, you should ask your daughter how she feels about it, and let her talk to her fiance. Otherwise, please stay out of it. What the groomsmen wear is of little importance to the rest of the day, and once they start dancing, the jackets and ties come off anyway. Creating ill-will before the wedding, however, will last a very long time. to have sex outside of marriage, a perfectly respectable position. If that’s the case, however, they should tell him so he understands the ground rules and doesn’t keep badgering them.” Why should the women have to explain

East Kootenay trail joins Trans-Canada network BY SALLY MACDONALD Cranbrook Townsman

The walking/biking pathway between Cranbrook and Kimberley is now part of the Trans Canada Trail network. Officials from the two cities signed an agreement last week with Trails BC, and now the North Star Rails to Trails is seen as a highly valued Canadian trail. Opened in 2010, the Rails to Trails is a paved 26-kilometre path on what used to be railway tracks. Canadian Pacific Railway donated the land to the cities the path is on. The Rails to Trails passes through meadows, over the St. Mary River, past hoodoos and over hills into Kimberley. “With the backdrop setting of the BC Rockies, this already popular trail will surely become a highlight segment of the Trans Canada Trail,� said Al Skucas, president of Trails BC. The agreement will open up access to more funding, including potential capital funding of up to 50 per cent for trail infrastructure projects, national and international marketing exposure.
