The end for Book Masters store Cameron Orr It’s with heavy hearts that Linda and Ken Pitzel lock the doors at Book Masters/The Source, one of the iconic stores of City Centre Mall. In business for 15 years — starting as a book store off the parking lot of the upper City Centre parking lot, where Dee’s Flowers is now, in October 1996 — they are forced to close after The Source used a clause in their contract with Linda and Ken to pull the plug with 90 days notice. While that specifically didn’t mean they had to close shop entirely — the Book Masters side is their own business — with the book sales industry in the state it’s in, not just locally but globally, they said they just couldn’t afford to keep the business going. “The Source side supports the book side,” said Ken, who joined Linda in running the business later, after he left a previous job. He admitted that book sales isn’t a viable business in today’s world. Despite that, the two were set to continue operating the business as usual — they were only two years in to a five year contract with The Source. Linda said what the corporate side is doing is going ahead with their own store in the mall. “What they’re going to do is turn around and open their own
corporate store,” she said. “They didn’t tell us that but if you go to their [website] they’re advertising for Kitimat employees and managers.” Book Masters/The Source employs seven people in total, including Linda and Ken, and Ken said that there is no formal program to transfer the employees to the new The Source store, so anyone interested would have to apply. Linda and Ken said they would have been very willing to work amiably with The Source but their treatment from head office has left them sour. Notably the two weren’t even informed of The Source’s intentions until rumour hit them that The Source was looking for retail space in the mall. On that talk, Linda called head office and the very next day received a reply, over the phone then in the mail, telling them they had 90 days. “It was unexpected, it was quick. All we can do is concentrate on trying to get this closed and then we’ll just have to go from there,” said Linda. She added, “I don’t think we would have gotten a phone call had we not caught them snooping around looking for leasing space.” Linda and Ken had been expecting a very good year for business with all of the activity going

At least when they close on April 28 they’ll still have 15 years of good memories of the store. When asked if there were any highlights of running the store,
Linda recalled the time that famous children’s book author Robert Munsch showed up in the store to buy a book. (Linda didn’t recognize him at first, and only when he present-
ed his credit card for payment did she realize.) The Sentinel attempted to contact a media spokesperson for The Source but has not been able to reach one as of press time.
Campbell joins school board after byelection Results are in from the March 24 byelection for a Kitimat seat on the Coast Mountains school board, and former trustee Linda Campbell has been elected. Campbell had previously served three terms on the Coast Mountain school board in the 90s, and since then has spent two terms as a Kitimat city councillor. “I feel good about my decision,” said Campbell, who will be sworn into the school board on April 18. “I can’t wait to get started on different issues.” One of which she said is the school district’s shift to a middle school concept
next year, which will see Grade 7 students attending a middle school, and Grade 10 students heading to high schools in Terrace and Kitimat. “I think that the concept of a middle school is something that can be very exciting,” Campbell said. The byelection was called after the unexpected death of former board chair and Kitimat trustee Barry

Pankhurst last December, which left one of two Kitimat seats open on the school board. Pankhurst was Campbell’s brother-inlaw, and she said he had encouraged her to run again in the past. However, she explained that as both Pankhurst and Ray Raj had put their names forward she didn’t want to create the extra cost of an election by running. “Barry was a huge advocate for special needs in Kitimat, and I would like to continue that,” Campbell said. “I have some very big shoes to fill.”

MP Cullen takes issue with review changes Martina Perry On March 29 the Conservative Party released their Economic Action Plan, a $276 billion federal budget that saw $5.2 billion in spending cuts. “In this budget, our Government is looking ahead not only over the next few years but also over the next generation,” said Finance Minister Jim Flaherty. “The reforms we present today are substantial, responsible and necessary. They will ensure that all across government we are focused on enabling and sustaining Canada’s long-term economic growth.” The Conservative Party says that there are five major themes of the plan, including ensuring longterm sustainability of social programs, supporting entrepreneurship and innovation, responsible and timely resource development, investing in training and infrastructure and supporting families and communities. However Skeena-Bulkey Valley MP Nathan Cullen has many issues with the 2012 budget, perhaps the biggest issue being that environmental reviews of major oil, gas and mining projects will be shortened, something the Tories say will ensure ventures get off the ground sooner to promote economic development. “The idea that you can short cut these things and just start rubber stamping everything and that it won’t cost you in the end is insanity. It’s not the real world. There’s a reason we built all of these systems. Could they be improved? Absolutely. But to cancel the federals role is not good for business,” said Cullen. Cullen says the Tory government is doing this out of desperation to get the proposed Enbridge Northern Gateway Project underway. “Changing the rules of the game that they’ve been trying to undermine since day one and corrupt them even further… I’ve never heard of a government anywhere doing this. You can’t get this many months in a process, and engage this many stakeholders, then half way through say they’re entirely willing to change
the process in the company’s favor. I guess they’re just that desperate,” he commented. Enbridge was pleased with the announcement, stating via email, “Enbridge is supportive of measures in the federal budget that advocate the concept of ‘one project, one review’ completed in a clearly defined time period. It makes great sense and would support developments that bring jobs and prosperity to Canadians.” One of the most controversial
Nathan Cullen changes made in the budget is that starting in 2023 the age of eligibility for Old Age Security will change from 65 to 67. The change will not affect Canadians under the age of 54. “They’re going to move the retirement age up a couple of years and try to placate Canadians by saying it won’t effect the ones next in line, just the people right after that. Well, the pension system is built by people many years before they actually retire and it’s for people by people. I don’t understand why the government thinks this is a good idea,” said Cullen. Also, around 19,200 public service jobs will be cut over the next three years (about 4.8 per cent of the current work force). Cullen

Didn’t get enough the last time I trust you’ll remember the day. It was September 2, 2009, when I printed my farewell column on this page. It ended with the words “I’ll be back.” What I had meant was this town wouldn’t be forgotten on my new adventure. I was setting off not too far down the road to Smithers where I was the editor of that paper since, well, September 2, 2009. There I met some great new people and learned what life was like in another small, northern B.C. town. It was a challenging but rewarding job. I never forgot about Kitimat, or even ever stopped missing it. My wife’s family, close and extended, almost entirely live here so Kitimat remained the go-to for holidays and weekend trips. On Wednesdays I would sift through my pile of papers in Smithers and get my weekly dose of Kitimat news. Here’s the thing about me and this town; I never in my life imagined I would have lived here, never in my life imagined I would have liked living here, and never would have imagined that I would have so wanted to come back after leaving. Yet here I am. You know by now that your illustrious Northern Sentinel editor Malcolm Baxter has stepped down from his post, capping off a long, notable career. We will all miss him. As a cub reporter here from 2007 to 2009 I hung off his every word to absorb as much knowledge as I could. He had, and still has, lots to offer. It will be a strange place here without that daily guidance but he has shown much confidence in my ability, which is encouraging. I’ll do my best to maintain this paper as a quality, trusted product. As with Malcolm, I hope people can help me out by submitting the occasional photo or write-up for events I might not be able to get out to; part of the challenge of a one-person newsroom. (And soon to be new-father). The bottom line though is, I’m thrilled to be back in Kitimat, and equally thrilled to be this paper’s new editor. I’m looking forward to the ride and having all of you along with me. Cameron Orr

theory that without adequate returns (i.e., big remuneration, big allowances and quickly-accessed gold-plated pensions) the taxpayer won’t get the “best” people running for government? It’s not an idea, I suggest, emanating so much from the electorate – but it frequently echoes from denizens around Parliament Hill, and other under-performing political locations such as Queen’s Park, and the Legislative buildings in Victoria. When I look at what we have in place in government now – whether they rate themselves best, medium, worst or whatever – they seem to me to be a lot worse than we can afford. If austerity is needed in so many troubled economies in B.C., Ontario, New Brunswick, Quebec and in Ottawa’s own wonderful world – there are evident indications across the country that perhaps the current incentives to attract the best just aren’t yet getting the job done. Sticking to Canada for the time being, there are few provinces where there’s any real general public satisfaction that we are employing “good hands people,” to borrow a logo. In Ottawa, despite returning the first majority government in a long time, rarely have I seen so much concentrated animosity and division among the electorate on Conservative government policies and programs announced to date. When does conflict stop and work begin?
Under Misc. from page 4 The old adage, “you can please some of the people all of the time etc.” certainly applies at this time. Reading any public commentary on various political and economic news stories, likely only gives a sense of people’s feelings about where we stand. But, there I see a level of distrust and anger, nay, directed fury — principally at the Vic Toews, Tony Clement, Stephen Harper and Jim Flaherty quartet alone. It is astonishing. An awful lot of people seem to vigorously regret either their own, or their neighbour’s vote, if either can been seen to have helped lead to a Harper majority. I am writing this two days before Flaherty is scheduled to bring down a very unpopular budget. There’s a similar crescendo of complaint in Ontario, where McGuinty’s reelection appears to have thrown more

Dear sir, After the council meeting of March 19 I am very confused as to who has a conflict of interest when something is brought up during a meeting. I’m beginning to think you have to be retired, have no interest in anything, don’t belong to anything and don’t receive a pension from Rio Tinto Alcan or some other company, in order to be a councillor. Golfers support Lung Association Submitted Once again this year the BC Lung Association is offering golfers province-wide an opportunity to purchase its Golf Privilege Club membership book. The book provides deep discounts and reduced fees at nearly 350 golf courses throughout British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Washington State. And for just $35, you will not only be paying less to play your favourite sport, you’ll also be helping the lives of the one in five British Columbians living with lung disease. “Our membership book saves golfers hundreds of dollars for less than the price of one round of golf while supporting the Lung Association’s work to improve lung health in British Columbia,” says Rossella Norman, BC Lung Association Volunteer Director for Kitimat. You can purchase the Golf Privilege Club® membership book today at www.golfandsave.ca or by phone at 1-800-665-5864. All proceeds support vital lung health research, advocacy and patient support programs.

Good Friday a somber day John 19:30, “When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, He said, ‘It is finished’ and He bowed His head and gave up His Spirit.” Good Friday is the most somber day of the year for Christians around the world, because it is the day that our Savior bled and died for you and for me. When He declared, “It is finished,” from the cross, He was declaring that the dirty work of dying for our sins was finished. We humans are incapable of declaring, “It is finished” in the same way as Jesus did. We may have a bucket list of things that we complete before we die, but it is the human condition that we will always look back at the end of our lives and
From the Pulpit Redeemer Lutheran Church
Pastor Clint Magnus see them as being unfinished. There will always be regrets, things we should have done. Only Jesus lived a perfect life and finished exactly everything He came here to do. When man sinned in the Garden of Eden, God pronounced the judgment of death for our sin and rebellion, and ever since, man has been born in sin, separated from the Father. But God in His mercy promised a Savior who would reconcile us back to Him-
self, and that Savior is His Son Jesus Christ. He lived a sinless life (because we can’t) and then gave that perfect life willingly on the cross as payment for the debt we owe God. Speaking to believers Colossians 2:13-14 says, “And you who were dead in your trespasses and sins, God has made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us. This He set aside by
nailing it to the cross.” Because Jesus finished that ugly job on the cross, now, all who repent of their sins and believe in Him will be forgiven and granted eternal life. The unblemished Lamb of God died on that windswept hill of Calvary that first Good Friday 2,000 years ago. Our Savior had to go through the valley of the shadow of death to satisfy the debt that your sin and mine demanded; and when He did, all of creation creaked and groaned. The sun went black for three hours; there was a mighty earthquake and the veil in the Temple, which had separated man from God for so long, was rent in two as the

Renatta Cole (left) and Margaret Ferns were among the Canadian Cancer Society volunteers selling daffodils over the weekend. The pair displayed photos of their husbands — Jim Cole and Harry Ferns — both of whom they have lost to cancer. After the daffodils are all gone people can still pick up their daffodil pins throughout the entire month. Those ‘badges of courage’ are encouraged to be worn on April 27, which is National Daffodil Day.
