Princeton says farewell to penny Michaela Garstin editor@similkameenspotlight.com
Local business owners react to the elimination of Canada’s smallest denomination The penny will start to disappear from Canadians’ pockets in about six months, the government announced in its new budget. Businesses will be asked to return pennies to banks beginning this fall,

but the copper coin will retain its value indefinitely. However, pennies will only be allowed for payment in 25-cent bunches. CoCo’s Bistro co-owner Barbara Bushewsky doesn’t mind pennies because it allows her to give exact change back to her customers. “Pennies aren’t a hassle. They come in handy all the time,” she said. The government is recommending businesses round down to 0 or 5 if the
The emergency department at Princeton Hospital will be closed from midnight to 8 a.m. Monday to Thursday starting May 1. An announcement was made by Interior Health at town council April 2 about the decision to close the emergency department during these times until a doctor is found to fill the shifts. These scheduled closures will reduce the amount of time the hospital is on LLTO status, where only someone who could die or lose a limb will be seen. But the amount of times the hospital is actually closed - when injured or sick people must travel to another hospital no matter how bad their condition is - will increase once the change comes into affect. “It’s been really obvious to residents of Princeton that we’ve had challenges... in ensuring we have sufficient physicians to provide on-call coverage,” said Princeton Hospital administrator Susan Brown. And the situation has gotten worse. One Princeton doctor reduced his on-call availability as of April 2 and locum doctors from previous years aren’t available, she said. If the hospital wasn’t on a set schedule of closures, the emergency department could end up being closed during busier times, Brown said. “We are concerned that we are moving into the potential of more closures and that some of those closures may be during peak times,” Brown said. “That’s the kind of instability we want to avoid.” During the time the emergency room is closed four times a week patients will have to travel by ambulance or helicopter to Penticton or another city for treatment. Interior Health will be working with Princeton’s three doctors in their recruitment strategy to see how they envision making room for another doctor in town, Brown said. The emergency department is tentatively closed on April 9, 16, 25 and 30, until it begins regular closures on May 1.

PENNY - soon to be gone And if the price ends in a three, four, eight or nine, it should be rounded up. “People like to get exact change back, so this will be different for them,” said Bushewsky. The elimination of the penny which costs 1.6 cents to make - is one part of the government’s costsaving budget, which also includes a 10 per cent cut to CBC, an increase on the duty-free allowance for crossborder shoppers and a rise in old age security eligibility from 65 to 67. It costs about $11 million to supply pennies to Canada. “They’re a pain,” said Everything Pets owner Keith Olsen, who is happy to hear the penny will slowly become a thing of the past. He wants to donate any extra money he makes from rounding up to charity. Bushewsky is also thinking of holding a penny-drive to support a charity. But how do non-business owners in Princeton feel about the penny Michaela Garstin/Spotlight disappearing? “I save all my pennies for charity CoCo’s Bistro co-owner Corry Oerlemans holds out pennies he in a big bag and send them in once a will soon have to give back to the bank. year,” said Dave Fiddler. Princeton Ground Search and Rescue get ready to help a man who was injured while skiing.
Rescuers spring to action Michaela Garstin editor@similkameenspotlight.com
Princeton Ground Search and Rescue save people anywhere too rugged for an ambulance or truck to get to, often using quads or snowmobiles deep in the forest. On a recent rescue expedition they saved an injured 80-year-old man who had fallen while crosscountry skiing 60 kilometres up a snow-covered road. An ambulance was called but couldn’t get to the man, so Ground Search and Rescue (GSR) quickly stepped in. The team assembled a snowmobile, rescue toboggan, spine board and stretcher at the base. “When we got there, he couldn’t move and was in a lot of pain when he tried to get up,” said GSR manager Randy Rorvik who was at the scene. The elderly man ended up having a cracked pubic bone and pelvis.

The GSR team responds to about a dozen calls a year in off-road areas. The group is often confused with Princeton Highway Extrication Society, also known as Highway Rescue. This life-saving team quickly responds to accidents on roads and highways in the Princeton-area, not off-road incidents like the GSR does. Princeton’s Ground Search and Rescue doesn’t only deal with trapped, injured people. They can also be tasked by the coroner to recover bodies in the forest or other remote locations. “I believe in giving back to the community,” said Rorvick, who joined the GSR when he heard about it from a friend. He is looking for new volunteers to join. Working with the team can be similar to the TV show Mantracker because the team has to constantly assess different signs for where to search, he said. “We come up to a truck, and the person could have gone in any direction. We have to narrow down the search to know which way to begin looking.” The team also has to assess the area for their own safety before starting out. They are extra careful of avalanches in the winter. Princeton GSR will be featured in a TV show on the Knowledge Network this fall. Rorvick doesn’t want to give away too much, but mentioned the show will be about an elderly woman who was supposed to ride a bus from Vancouver to Penticton, but got off in Princeton instead because she used to live in the area. The GSR team quickly sprang to action while being filmed, searching anywhere it was difficult for vehicles to reach.

Local food should be affordable Michaela Garstin editor@similkameenspotlight.com
I’ll admit it - where my vegetables were grown used to be the last thing on my mind. Just feeding myself healthy food was hard enough when I was a tired, poor student. I subsided on spaghetti and frozen perogies while trying to save money to hang out with my friends on weekends. I didn’t care if the veggies came from China, the U.S. or Mexico. At least I was having something healthy. I’m sure this is the way with many families. They are happy to just feed their children vegetables, especially with the rising cost of food. Sure, the lettuce isn’t as fresh and they’re not supporting local farmers, but these families are doing the best they can. At a talk about food sustainability in Princeton a couple weeks ago I learned that big grocery stores make it hard for local farmers to sell their food at competitive prices. That’s a shame. They should be encouraging local farmers to sell their produce. I would be willing to pay a bit more for local veggies, especially now that I’m finished school and working. I know I get what I pay for. But it’s still hard to resist cheap foreign food. I’m training myself to look at the tags first to make sure the veggies are from B.C. instead of just jumping at the price. Sometimes I slip up - the other day I bought a huge plastic carton of garlic from China because it was such a good deal. I’m getting better though. I made sure I bought a lot of vegetables from B.C. on the same trip. I’m excited for local farmers markets to open for the season. I want to try to buy all my veggies and fruit from them this summer. Farmers are already out-and-about at this time of the year. I saw a farmer selling eggs in a Princeton parking lot this week (photo Page 2). Only $3.50 for 12. Now that’s a fair deal that I would go for.

Questioning emergency room closures Dear Editor, This is an open letter to our government and Interior Health, for my community. Just wondering... would you provide for my sister and her children when her husband dies on the way to Penticton Hospital from injuries sustained at work when our emergency room is closed again? Would you support my son and his children when he has to stay home because his wife died from injuries sustained in a
car accident because there was no doctor available to care for her? Would you pay for my child’s funeral and grief counselling for my family if my child died from an allergic reaction because the emergency room was closed again? Would you pay for in-home nursing care for my parents because there is no place for them because the waiting list is longer than the time they have left? I am alone, sick and poor—I have no
doctor, the hospital emergency room is often closed and I have no way to get to one that is open. Will you come and take care of me or must I suffer and die alone? These are questions for those that are supposed to care. Will you answer? I wonder...
Dear Editor, There was never a mention of my being victimized in any of my letters. I found your thoughts humorous, as did so many others that read it. But you know what, responding to your letter is really an exercise in futility, because if you had absorbed and given a little thought to any letters (from others besides me) that you read over the years you might have a more sensible and realistic way of thinking. But it’s possible that you dismissed everything as hogwash, which is very sad because the 90-year-old lady that had to fend off a deer with her walker certainly wouldn’t share you’re thinking, nor
would the elderly man who was brutally attacked. Hunting season is the deer control system? It’s all right with you then that the deer are hunted and killed in the wild (where they belong) as long as you don’t know how many or how they were killed, but we’re supposed to pussy foot around the ones in town though because, to my knowledge, hunting deer in town is against the law. I’m a believer in wildlife conservation and a proud supporter of Canadian Wildlife and B.C. Wildlife Federation and periodically the SPCA. Re: tour busses - these people in all probability have never seen a deer in real life and if they had to live amongst them, they’d have a different opinion. And in Asian countries they wouldn’t live long if they became a problem.
Twenty years ago seeing a deer in town was rare, but then people started feeding them, encouraging them to stay. Deer repellent sprays - I purchased two types that should have worked - good money down the drain. Deer resistant plants - now they eat anything and everything, maybe I should plant rhubarb?! Re: dogs - these are not wild animals they are pets that live as members of the family. Owners are responsible for their dogs, but unfortunately some are made the way they are, because of being abused, tormented or trained to be vicious. Enough said!! Kay Goglin Princeton
Ambulance dispatchers need your help Dear Editor and Spotlight readers: I read with dismay the front page article detailing Mr. Meszaros’ plight waiting for an ambulance between Hedley and Princeton. In the meantime, the public needs to do all that it can to help inform 911 of their location by including

a relevant landmark or kilometre distance from the nearest town. It is important to remember two things when dealing with dispatch: they are located in Kelowna and they are giving instructions based on digital maps, not personal knowledge of the area. They are often giving information to a “rookie sent to a rural area for training, so there may be confusion duplicated by the driver. Tell them where you live in relation to a landmark: for example, “I live 12 kilometres east of Bromley Rock on Highway 3. Remember, they do not know you! Remember there are thousands of kilometers of Highway 3. Your address is repeated again and again between here and Alberta. Both dispatch and the ambulance driver are using automated maps which do not include your personal information. We need everybody to work together on this issue so that we do not have a tragic outcome because of these inconsistencies in understanding. Fall Fair threatened Michaela Garstin
editor@similkameenspotlight.com
The 47th annual Princeton Agricultural Fall Fair could be cancelled if more people don’t join the fair’s planning committee. Only seven people showed up to the last meeting, and the fair’s president Keith Olsen says another 10 are needed. “We need more people to join for new ideas that we can brainstorm about. There is only so much seven people can do, he said. Every year, volunteers show up during the fair, but more are needed to help with
planning, he said. “We might have to cancel it this year, and then see if there is an interest in bringing it back next year. Olsen would like to change things up this year - possibly have a carnival stop by or bring back motor sports. It could be beneficial to change the date of the fair to the summer, instead of its scheduled dates on Sept. 1 and 2. Travelling carnivals are usually booked at other fairs during the beginning of September, so the date could be changed to June or July. “We need to be flexible, and willing to
work with the carnival, Olsen said. The fair hosted demolition derbies, old car races and a mud bog run in past years entertainment he would like to see brought back. Another possibility for the fair is logger sports, such as a chainsaw carving competition and axe throwing. But whether or not the fair will happen depends on the committee getting more volunteers. The committee meets on the fourth Tuesday of every month. The next meeting is on April 24 at 6:30 p.m. in the library. For more information call Olsen at 250295-7381.

POWWOW - Museum showing regalia Museum shows powwow history The History of the Pow Wow exhibition is now open. Regalia from local First Nation artists Oly Bent and Tiinesha Begaye will be on display, as well as children’s regalia. The exhibition looks at the tradition surrounding powwows and runs Wednesday through Saturday, 10a.m. to 3p.m. until April 14 at the Princeton & District Museum & Archives on Vermilion Avenue. Entry by donation. Special performance For the close of the Upper Similkameen Spirit Festival, we are excited to announce a special performance by Tiinesha Begaye at Riverside Centre on April 15 at 3p.m. Tiinesha, whose heritage is Navajo and Similkameen, sings a blend of Canadian style hand drumming with elements of DinÊ social singing and presents songs that capture the excitement and energy of native youth today. Tickets will be available at the door for $5 each. For more details on events, including the powwow schedule, visit www.princetonarts.ca.

Debbie Scarpelli is handed a $1,000 gas card from a Princeton Dry Grad raffle by students Nathan Garton (middle) and Mike Dunn.
Princeton was well represented at the recent BC Parks Volunteer strategy meeting in Penticton. Roy Harker, who in 2008 was volunteer of the year for the parks, continues his work on the back-country trails and game count in the Snowy Mountain Protection area. Kelley Cook, who documents the historic trails, was well known by park enthusiasts and Princeton is fortunate to have such a passionate and knowledgeable person in our community. Marjorie Holland and Dell Hall were invited following their organization of Art and Parks in Manning last summer. Following the success of the partnership of the Arts Council and the provincial park, it is hoped this collaboration will continue as we are fortunate in being in close proximity to Manning, Bromely Rock, Otter Lake, Allison Lake, Stemwinder and Cathedral.
Young Life helping Princeton teens Contributed editor@similkameenspotlight.com
Young Life in Princeton – Where are we heading?… Come find out! The teen culture today has shifted dramatically from the culture even ten years ago. Our local teens are inundated with snippets of media, video files, texts and other social media. Yet they are not really able to connect in a meaningful way. Many adults have difficulty relating to their issues and challenges. As a matter of fact, it is a daunting feat for any adult or parent to get their head around a teen’s perspective in life. Unless you are immersed in their world, you are unlikely to make much of a positive impact in their lives. That’s where our local Young Life leaders come in. They invest their time, talents, and energy into teens in order to be there for them. They know how to have fun with kids in a healthy way and they are a friend, mentor, advocate and voice of reason when needed. Some areas of involvement are regularthemed club events, trips, supporting the local high school sport and leisure programs, and being with teens at local community events. Liz Knibbecke and Mat Donohoe are two local leaders with Young Life of Canada who are financially supported by the Princeton community in order to free them up to spend time with our teens. As well, there is a local Young Life Committee who are in place supporting their efforts and putting the tools in their hands so they can be successful. Each year the local Young Life committee hosts a fundraiser event in order to help raise the necessary

Lamb casserole, French origins with a Canadian flavour Shortly after I left the navy I went to work in a small hotel on the East coast of Nova Scotia. It was a beautiful place in a fairyland setting within eyesight of a picturesque cove filled with millionaires’ yachts. To say it was a challenge to take over the reins of this place would be an understatement. But I loved working there and I loved meeting the guests. We had people from all across the province dropping in, and a good many clients who were local diners. For example, we had a table reserved for the president of a large company who often flew down from Montreal for dinner on a Friday night. He was a generous tipper and I always made sure he got a good meal. In fact I usually cooked for him and his guests from the chafing dish so that he got a lot of attention. He liked that.

1/4 cup AP flour Method; Put the beans in a casserole dish and cover with cold water. Let soak overnight, then drain (Save the Water). Then cook the beans till soft. Put everything in (including the lamb and the extra water) into a slow cooker or a casserole dish and cook for 4 - 6 hours. At one hour intervals skim off the fat and check the lamb to see if it is tender. There will be a natural sauce that will form in the casserole and you should serve this sauce with the lamb, which can be sliced off the bone. French bread is perfect with this dish, and I love this with fresh asparagus dripping in butter—and a bottle of dry red wine. Simply divine, enjoy. See Ya Next Week!

ANSWER TO PUZZLE NO. 343
HOW TO PLAY: Fill in the grid so that every row, every column, and every 3x3 box contains the numbers 1 through 9 only once. Each 3x3 box is outlined with a darker line. You already have a few numbers to get you started. Remember: You must not repeat the numbers 1 through 9 in the same line, column, or 3x3 box.
ARIES: Concerns grow over a relative’s situation. The answer is clear, but no amount of prodding will turn that resolution into reality, so save your energy for more important things, Aries. TAURUS: Tempers flare. Be careful what you say, Taurus. You don’t want to add fuel to the fire with so many looking on. A surprise gift gets the weekend off right. GEMINI: Awesome, Gemini. You complete the project well ahead of schedule, and you’re rewarded in multiple ways. A feud comes to an end at home. CANCER: Been there, done that, Cancer. Look for a different avenue. Making time for an old friend proves beneficial. You raise their spirits and they let you in on a secret. LEO: The seeds you planted take root, and you end up with more helpers than you can count. Learn to delegate, Leo, and the event will go off without a hitch. VIRGO: Passing the buck is not the answer, Virgo. Step up to the plate, and with the right preparation, you’ll hit one out of the park for sure. Batter up! LIBRA: A home improvement project begins, and things quickly escalate out of control. Scale back your plans, Libra, and you might just have the funds for a pro. SCORPIO: Way to go, Scorpio. You wrap up a project just in time for a new one, which you tackle with finesse. Praise comes from all around. A promotion could be in order. SAGITTARIUS: Snap out of it, Sagittarius. Sure, there are wrinkles due to your inexperience, but everything will be smoothed out in the end. A deadline is met. FOR ENTERTAINMENT ONLY

Thank you to EVERYONE who has supported us following the passing of George, we would like to express our sincere thanks and appreciation. To Ron, Diane and Penny for being with that first day. To the paramedics who tried so hard to revive him. To all who sent cards, flowers and food, the outpouring of well wishes was overwhelming. To John who did such a beautiful job of honoring my husband, no words can describe how meaningful it was for me and my family. To Minister, Nick Judson, for honoring all our wishes. To all who got up and spoke, every story was special, the way he touched so many people in so many ways. To the legion ladies, thank you for the wonderful tea and sandwiches. To anyone that I may have missed, thank you, and thank you to the great people of our little town. The Judd Family

Interfor’s Board of Directors approved a $24 million capital plan to upgrade the Company’s Grand Forks and Castlegar sawmills. The plan involves the installation of a new small log line at Grand Forks to replace existing two-line facility, along with funds to complete the installation of an automated lumber grading system.
