meal of the creature was by examining the gut lining. McDadi said that Yoho park is the second oldest in Canada, after Banff. “Yoho is one of the crown jewels of the system. It’s open and accessible to everyone in B.C. and in all of Canada. “You can actually go to the fossil beds on guided hikes every summer, and it’s really incredible. It’s like taking a step back in time. You actually get a chance to look at the fossils.” In good Canadian fashion, McDadi compared the importance of the discovery to hockey. He said the Burgess Shale is the Stanley Cup of fossil sites, and Pikaia is the Wayne Gretzky of Fossils. “It’s drawn a lot of interest throughout the world. It’s definitely another piece in the big jigsaw puzzle in trying to figure out the development of life on this planet,” he said.
Its name sounds like it might be some Pokemon character, but the Pikaia’s importance is far greater than its name or size. It was long suspected the fossil, no longer than a thumb, was an ancient chordate, meaning it had a primitive spine, and therefore is one of the earliest known ancestors of all vertebrae animals, including humans. Best of all, the rare fossil comes from the Burgess Shale Fossil beds, a 505-million-year-old piece of land on the southwest side of a ridge between Mt. Field and Wapta Mountain, protected in the heart of Yoho National Park. On Monday researchers from the University of Cambridge, the Royal Ontario Museum and the University of Toronto confirmed that Pikaia gracilens was a primitive chordate. “They’ve known about them since 1909,” Omar McDadi with Parks Canada said. “They may be the planet’s earliest link to man. They were long speculated to be a chordate. This is the first study to confirm that.” When the Pikaia last breathed, the only life on the planet existed in the ocean, McDadi said. “All of B.C. and most of Alberta and Saskatchewan were underwater,” he said. “The creatures at the t 61 50 $ 100 USD ONBOARD CREDIT Burgess Shale were buried under water t '3&& 41&$*"-5: 3&45"63"/5 %*//&3 '03 and mud, and very rapidly. Jago to mediate teachers’ dispute DELYNDA PILON newsroom@pgfreepress.com
The governmental appointment of Dr. Charles Jago as the mediator between the B.C. Teacher’s Federation (BCTF) and the B.C. Public School Employers’ Association (BCPSEA) comes as no surprise to Matt Pearce, president of the Prince George Teachers Association, but he said it is still disappointing. “It’s not a surprise. He’s well connected with the Liberals without a background in labour mediation. Anyone with a reputation in mediation wouldn’t touch it with a 10 foot pole,” he said. However, in a media teleconference Jago said he has engaged in negotiations before, though not a contract dispute, and he has a lot of experience in prob-
lem solving and consensus building. “I do have related skills,” he said, adding a trained mediator hasn’t worked up until this point. “I think I’m the right person for the job. I wouldn’t be doing it if I didn’t think the government was justified in the choice it made.” However, he admits it will be a difficult endeavour. “I described it as mission impossible. There are enormous barriers. There is a sorry record of negotiations going back 20 years,” he said. He said when he was approached to take on the job he first gave it careful consideration and discussed the scope of his role with the government. “I wanted to be assured it was not a sham,” he said. “I wouldn’t be doing this if I thought there
was no hope.” He pointed out he has a reputation of taking on complex and far reaching tasks like the northern medical program and the cancer care centre now under construction in Prince George. “I do have a record of taking on major issues,” he said. As for ties to the Liberals, which includes donations to the party, Jago said it amounted to about $1,000 used to pay the way of a couple of friends and himself into a golf tournament. “I think people who’ve worked with me in the past can say I’m very independent,” he said. Jago said he will be in contact with both parties either later this week or early next week. Gaining the respect of the parties involved and getting a sense of the mandates are important first tasks.

Take a journey on the Silk Road The communities along the Silk Road witnessed one of the most exciting cultural exchanges ever recorded. Everything Indian or central Asian was the rage. Learned monks traveled through central Asia to obtain Indian texts and merchants accompanying them brought back exotic trade goods. It was a commercial network that evolved into a sophisticated cultural communication link. “The Prince George Symphony Orchestra (PGSO) and Immigrant and Multicultural Services Society (IMSS) will reinvent the Silk Road experience,” says Csilla Moffat of the PGSO. “The exploration will take us on a cultural exchange fueled by curiosity and a tantalizing of the senses, that results in a mutual learning experience from which everyone can benefit.” This two-week long series of interactive events will take you on a journey with performers, music, crafts, dance and cuisine. Enjoy the riches these cultures have to offer. The Persian New Year celebration starts on March 31 with the sounds of Navaz who will bring to the stage a full band with authentic musical instruments. Navaz musicians are Neda Jalali, vocals, Eric Tompkins, guitar, Peyman Rohandeh, setar, oud, Mohammad Sayyadi, daf, tonbak, Richard Jenne, drums, Raghu Lokanathan, accordian, Curtis Abriel, bass and Shawn Smith, sax. The setar is a stringed instrument that has a similar sound to a Greek Bouzouki. The oud, another stringed instrument is perhaps

the most popular middle-eastern instrument which has the sound of a low bass. The tonbak and daf are drums of different shapes which create different sounds. Performers will be offering some of their originals as well as popular Persian and Arabic songs. There will be a tantalizing cultural presentation by Zaffron Cuisine, teasing your palate with salads, Persian flat bread and main dishes infused with exotic herbs and spices of the Middle East (also vegetarian choices.) For dessert there is homemade saffron and pistachio Persian ice cream. On April 1, Navaz will hold a musical workshop where attendees have an opportunity to learn first hand about the exotic instruments that produce the lilting melodies of Persia and Arabia. On Wednesday, April 11 a group of lucky women will learn some cooking tipss from Mojegan Sadeghian, owner of Zaffron Cuisine, who will prepare dishes and give ideas for serving them at home. The culmination of the celebrations is PGSO’s The Silk Road concert April 21 with guest conductor Miran Vaupotic from Croatia and special guest George Gao, master of the erhu (Chinese violin). One represents the beginning of the trade route, home of Marco Polo, and the other, the final destination in China which at that time was part of the largest contiguous land empire in human history, ruled by the Mongol Genghis Khan. Tickets for The Silk Road PGSO concert are available at 2080-15th Ave. or they can be ordered by phone at 250-562-0800.

Those arriving at the Prince George airport in June will be greeted by 400 people—or their pictures at least. Public artwork artist Aiden Callison is designing a portrait chandelier, which is scheduled to be suspended inside the arrivals terminal at the end of May. He is currently looking to take photos of as many people as possible who call Prince George their home. His goal is 400 photographs. The display is in celebration of the city’s cultural diversity. To be captured in one of these photos, Prince George residents can go to UNBC between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on March 31 when Callison will be taking pictures. Residents can also contact Kelley Hilton at Welcome PG, 250.562.2900 or kelley@imss.ca. More information can be found on the WelcomPG website.
