◆ COVER STORY

City kicks off Port Alberni’s 100th CENTENNIAL: | Proclamations, government greetings and hope for the future dominate centennial kickoff at ADSS Auditorium. SUSAN QUINN ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

“Happy anniversary, Port Alberni!” Alberni-Pacific Rim MLA Scott Fraser’s pronouncement during the kickoff to Port Alberni’s centennial brought a round of applause from close to 800 people gathered at the Alberni District Secondary School Auditorium on Sunday. “The Twin Cities that began really with some rivalry is a good story to reflect on,” Fraser said. “Because learning from our history makes a better future.” Port Alberni Mayor John Douglas reflected on what his counterpart, first mayor Arthur Waterhouse, faced in 1912, as the city perched on the cusp of incorporation. Waterhouse came to Port Alberni to help build a wharf at the end of Argyle Street, so ships would no longer be at the mercy of the tides in the Somass River. Another pioneer, George Bird, moved

his sawmill closer to Waterhouse’s wharf despite some people telling him he was crazy. But Bird had a vision back then, and it is up to the presentday council to develop its own vision, Douglas said. Where pioneers looked to the end of Argyle to develop, perhaps the next place for expansion is across the Alberni Inlet, he surmised. While Port Alberni and Alberni expanded their boundaries 100 years ago, Port Alberni now is looking west to Sproat Lake and northwest to Beaver Creek. The city could be looking at geographical areas and new boundaries for the future. That history “gives us a great opportunity to understand our history and use our history as a learning tool,” Douglas said. Ida Chong, Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development, awarded the city a $75,000 grant to help make arts and culture part of the centennial. Continued / 34

Ask and ye shall receive. The Vancouver Island Health Authority’s Integrated Health Network has partnered with the Port Alberni Salvation Army on a pilot program to provide fresh fruits and vegetables to IHN clients. “It feels exciting and gratifying to finally get this,” Major Bruce MacKenzie said. “We have a strong partner that we’ll be able to begin addressing this issue with.” Finalized in March, the program is available to IHN clients who demonstrate a

need for education and experience with healthy food preparation, VIHA spokesperson Anya Nimmon said. The program starts next week and the boxes of fresh fruit and produce will be provided once a month for three months total per recipient. Along with the food box the

patient will attend a course in healthy eating and food preparation. The initiative begins to address a longstanding need of the Salvation Army’s. In an interview with the news last winter, Major Bruce MacKenzie said that the food hampers they provided were largely carbohydrate and starch based, and that there was a need for fresh fruit and vegetables in them. The Salvation Army and IHN were finalizing the program then before it was put to VIHA for consideration and funding. Fresh produce for the new program will be purchased from local vendors either

on the same day or as close to as possible. “We just don’t have the capacity, space or resources to be able to accommodate storing fresh fruit and produce on site,” MacKenzie said. The initiative will measure the need and effectiveness of the program and, depending on the results, may be extended next year. But the project addresses an IHN principle as well, namely teaching their clients good health self-management. The Community Food Bank, which the Salvation Army operates, provides up to 500 food hampers per month to those in need.

City ponders request to subdivide old Alberni Mall site WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

Development of the old Alberni Mall, at the north end of Johnston Road, is taking a new turn.

Port Alberni city council is considering granting a variance permit to Shape Properties to subdivide the site on upper Johnston Road. According to a report from city planner Scott

Smith, Shape Properties, which is the property’s major mortgage holder, has applied to subdivide a portion of the property into five smaller properties, in effect turning the

14-acre property into six properties. The move would allow the developer more flexibility to access financing, Smith said. The eventual owners of the five smaller properties

would become mortgage holders, who in turn could sell their properties. Shape has indicated to city officials that they are in discussions with potential tenants for the vacant section of the mall,

and hope to apply for development permits to renovate the exterior of the building this spring, Smith said. The Dollar Giant takes up part of the old mall site.

ACRD grows by two members The AlberniClayoquot Regional District celebrated April Fools Day with some serious news: the historic expansion of the board by two members. On April 1 the board of directors increased from 10 to 12 members with the addition of the Huu-ay-aht and Yuułu?ił?ath Nations.

Their inclusion at the board continues the implementation of the Maa-nulth Treaty. “We Welcome representation of Huu-ay-aht and YuuĹ‚u?iĹ‚?ath Nations at the board,â€? ACRD chair Glenn Wong said. They will provide broader inclusion and expanded

co-operation among the communities within the regional district. The first official board meeting with all 12 directors will be Wednesday, April 11 at 1:30 p.m. in the regional district board room, 3008 Fifth Ave. The meeting will start with a welcoming ceremony.

A commissioner for taking affidavits will be on hand to conduct the oaths of office for the new treaty First Nation directors. This is unprecedented in British Columbia for a regional district to grow by two new members representing First Nations.

Nuu-chah-nulth retain right to sell fish: courts WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

[ You saw it First on the web www.albernivalleynews.com

The Supreme Court of Canada won’t review a B.C. court ruling that recognizes members of five First Nations’ right to make a living selling the fish they catch in their traditional territories. The announcement was made on the court’s “Dismissed with Costsâ€? judgments section of its website last Tuesday. In May 2011, the three-member judges’ panel unanimously upheld the 2009 B.C. Supreme Court decision that recognized that the Nuu-chah-nulth â€œâ€Ś have aboriginal rights to fish for any species of fish within their Fishing Territories ... and to sell that fishâ€?. The courts did not extend the aboriginal

right to the modern geoduck fishery, which it called “high techâ€?. “There can be no viable suggestion that the ancestors of the respondents could have participated in the commercial harvesting and trading of this particular marine resource at some time before contact‌â€? the judgment noted. The courts further decreed that the Nuu-chah-nulth and Fisheries and Oceans Canada have one year to negotiate an agreement that conforms to the decision. Nuu-chah-nulth people can’t be economically excluded from fishing anymore, Nuu-chah-

Kids’ health starts with literacy WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

A new literacy program for Alberni families is helping combat poor early development statistics measured last year. Parents As Literacy Supporters (PALS) is a family literacy program that gives parents and caregivers various strategies to encourage learning in their pre-school and kindergarten-aged children. Locally, PALS is delivered through a partnership between the Literacy Alberni Society and the Alberni Make Children First Network, and is underwritten by a local reading initiative. The program is aimed at three- to six-year-old children, who are taught using a series of games and exercises. The initiative seeks to

bolster children’s literacy, language and cognitive development before school starts. It also works with parents. PALS workshops are delivered by two facilitators: one who teaches children and one who teaches adults. “PALS is unique because it doesn’t just work with children but it also works with parents, giving them skills that they can take home and continue on with their children, Literacy Alberni executive director Richard Girling said. A committee oversees the work of PALS in Alberni, and 10 organizations have partnered with the group to host PALS sessions, Girling said. The essence of PALS was taught over two sessions to 60 people in Alberni who now serve as program facilitators. “We’re very fortunate that the community has embraced the PALS

concept, Girling said. The program was brought to Alberni as the result of an ongoing study done each school year that showed poor literacy measures in preschool age children, Girling said. The study was coordinated by the Make Children First Network in Alberni, and carried out by researchers from the University of Victoria through the Human Early Learning Partnership, network spokesperson Tracy Smyth said. Carried out each February in school districts across B.C., the test measures language, cognitive, social, emotional and communications development in children. The results in Alberni were disconcerting. Thirty per cent of children were noted to be vulnerable in one or more developmental category. The result

children in B.C. The greatest area of concern was in language and cognitive development. “We saw early literacy skills weren’t as strong as they could be and had a conversation with Literacy Alberni about it, Smyth said. “They were a fit because they are involved with literacy and are involved with families. PALS is a means to an end but that end will take time, Girling said. “One year alone won’t change early development results, he said. “But continued consistent exposure year after year will positively impact those figures. There have been 20 PALS workshops delivered so far with 10 more scheduled, the next one in April. Lawyers’ job action not affecting Alberni services WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

A province-wide job action by lawyers who provide duty counsel isn’t impacting business at the Port Alberni provincial court, provincial prosecutor Gordon Baines said. The dispute between the Trial Lawyers Association of B.C. and the provincial government who underwrite duty counsel has quietly gone on since January. This month, those lawyers who chose to do so are refusing to provide duty counsel, association spokesperson Bentley Doyle said. In March,

they withdrew services for three weeks. In February it was two weeks and in January, one week. The job action is affecting up to 50 courthouses across B.C., Doyle said. The crux of the dispute is the fees lawyers receive for the service. “B.C. pays the lowest amount per capita toward legal aid out of any province in the country, he said. The matter has its genesis in 2002 when the province slashed the legal services budget by $16 million. The budget was again cut in 2005 and in 2009, causing a cessation of representation of services for poverty

and family law. In the Alberni Valley, duty counsel is provided at the courthouse on Thursdays and that hasn’t changed. “I don’t think all of the lawyers are going along with it, Baines said. An employee with the court registry confirmed that the impact of the job action locally has been minimal. “We’ve been fortunate that there has not been an impact to the court proceedings, the employee said. Doyle disputed that there has been duty counsel in Alberni though, saying Legal Services Society

records note that there was no duty counsel in Port Alberni in February and March. “But that doesn’t mean that duty counsel wasn’t being made available by phone, he said. Lawyers aren’t walking off the job or away from clients per se, but they are refusing to do additional work, Doyle said. The TLABC advocates for lawyers who provide duty counsel to adults who are facing criminal, civil, immigration or family charges and who don’t have a lawyer. The TLABC represents 95 per cent of all trial lawyers. reporter@albernivalleynews.com

Look to past, learn future ‘Gentle’ John Cummins? Not really Alberni Valley citizens filled the Alberni District Secondary School Auditorium on the weekend to kick off the 100th anniversary of Port Alberni’s incorporation. Celebrating out centennial forces us to look at our past, and affords us, as Mayor John Douglas stated in his centennial speech, the opportunity to learn from our history so we may forge our future. It is a good message, and it behooves all of us to take it to heart. Something that stands out about many stories from 1910–1912, our city’s formative years, is how fleeting business could be—and, moreover, how our predecessors got past it and moved on. JOHN DOUGLAS When the city’s first ...2012 mayor mayor, Arthur Waterhouse, accompanied a fellow Victoria businessman by ship up the Alberni Inlet with plans to build a whar f, the remnants of our community’s first sawmill could barely be seen in the undergrowth. Yet it had only been a decade since the Anderson Mill had prospered. Mills came, they were a success, they burned down or they burned out. New mills were built. Stores opened, moved, closed. New stores opened in their stead. Business carried on. This is a valuable message to take away from our centennial celebrations: stasis doesn’t have to be our future. While our past may define us, it does not have to doom us to repeat the negative parts. Port Alberni is considered the birthplace of the B.C. forestry industry. At one time, we were an economic driver in the province. One hundred years ago, we were going places. There’s no reason that can’t still be the case.

TOM FLETCHER B.C. Views

V

ICTORIA – In an interview with one of our Vancouver Island papers before Christmas, B.C. Conservative leader John Cummins made a bold prediction that he would have party status before the general election in May 2013. That’s four seats, and it wasn’t based on an unlikely sweep of the Chilliwack-Hope and Port Moody-Coquitlam by-elections, now set for April 19. He hinted he was getting calls from MLAs looking to join up, after a November Angus Reid poll showed a sudden surge to 18 per cent for his resurgent brand. We now know that one of those callers was Abbotsford South MLA John van Dongen. I asked Cummins on Friday if he is still confident about three more. “Hopeful, let’s put it

that way,” he replied. Van Dongen’s explosive departure was arranged, with Cummins’ help, for maximum damage to Premier Christy Clark. Van Dongen notified the B.C. Liberal caucus that he was quitting. Then, in a questionable use of legislature privileges, he launched a broadside on Clark’s integrity. He cited the $6-million legal payout in the B.C. Rail sale, a decision made before Clark’s time, and the recent collapse of a deal to sell naming rights to B.C. Place. He described the B.C. Liberals as “an organization headed for failure,” then announced he’s joined the B.C. Conservatives. Cummins then joined van Dongen at a hotel news conference across the street, as the former Gordon Campbell cabinet minister disclosed he has hired his own lawyer to

dig through the roomful of paper from the B.C. Rail case once again. Auditor General John Doyle is already in court seeking access to details of the $6 million in lawyer bills, which the attorney general’s ministry hasn’t provided because it doesn’t have them. These delicate matters were farmed out to yet more independent lawyers. Independent special prosecutor Bill Berardino also spent seven years and many more millions on the B.C. Rail case, including the role of Clark’s lobbyist brother, Bruce. He didn’t find the smoking gun now sought by van Dongen. This effort seems designed more for political revenge in an election year than to clarify the sorry legacy of the B.C. Rail sale that has already been examined through two provincial elections.

Van Dongen was at the top of everyone’s list of disgruntled BC Liberals. During last year’s leadership contest, he muttered darkly about not only B.C. Rail, but also the integrity of fellow Abbotsford MLA Mike de Jong. Now Clark is van Dongen’s target, with Cummins standing beside him trying to look statesman-like. Of course van Dongen drove himself out of cabinet long before Clark returned. Chronic speeding by a public safety minister is a tough sell. I asked Cummins about the reluctance of key cabinet ministers Kevin Falcon and George Abbott to confirm they are running again. His aw-shucks, friendlygrandpa modesty precludes speculation, but he did allow it’s “maybe a comment on the state of affairs in the Liberal caucus.” Reporters started surveying government MLAs after Falcon and Abbott kept their options open for 2013. To the Editor, The NIMBY environmental types are at it again. They try to dissuade people from supporting the Compliance Coal, Raven Mine project by using alchemy as their source of proof. There are people who believe that there is strong opposition to this mine and the shipping of coal to Port Alberni but in reality it is the same basic few writing multiple letters and trying to insinuate support. John Snyder (from CoalWatch Comox Valley) has a Facebook site that was supposed to be open to the general public but anyone who ‘joined’ this group and questioned their science or their ethics was immediately “banned” from the group. The No Coal people make some pretty outlandish claims and wring their hands and gnash their teeth about supposed concerns over the water quality of Baynes Sound and surrounding area and the devastation it will cause. There is no stopping the people opposed

to the mine and they write over and over to government agencies and expect personnel will not notice these multiple documents from the same few people. The possibility of the coal mine and its close proximity to the railroad could provide a real shot in the arm for the E & N railroad. It could return the railroad to profitability if the mine was given approval to develop with the proviso that the entire product produced be shipped by rail to Port Alberni for furtherance. I am retired, never worked in the coal industry, but did work in the coking process of a steel mill back east and also worked as a contractor, a foreman in a small sawmill, owned a couple of supply businesses and most recently did a couple year’s stint in the local Canadian Tire. Dennis Dalla-Vicenza, Port Alberni

Waxing poetic over green city To the Editor, Sunday’s Centennial kick-off celebration was truly impressive. Countless volunteers had worked long and

‘Beauty is priceless, and it is also very fragile.’ – Rayana Erland hard to entertain us— for free, no less. It will be a memorable year in the community. I feel really fortunate to live here at this time, and being able to participate in the events yet to come. We have a centennial poem now, too. However, the poem calls forth an image of future Port Alberni as “green and radiant”, windsurfers playing on the inlet. It leaves out coal ships spewing their toxic black fumes, and a colossal coal storage sticking out at the Harbour Quay. It does not talk about the planned industrial waterfront road, or the endless procession of coal trucks and logging trucks limiting our access to the waterfront, spoiling the tranquil view and the rich estuary. Above all, what will be the fate of one of the world’s best salmon runs? Every selfrespecting town on the planet, big or

small, is trying their best to reclaim the waterfront. They understand the value of it, and realize how lucky they are to have a waterfront at all. Beauty is priceless, and it is also very fragile. The choices that are made in this, our centennial year, will decide Port Alberni’s future. Will it rise, green and radiant, at the water’s edge, or disappear into black smoke? The choice is here, it is now, and it is ours. Rayana Erland, Port Alberni

Mulcair latest target for PMO To the Editor, It’s that time of year, the date of which is determined by moon phases, when those of a certain religion become totally fixated on crucifixion. I became similarly fixated by the Beatles’ The Ballad Of John And Yoko playing in my cranial Wurlitzer whenever the TV lens focused on Thomas Mulcair during Saturday’s NDP Leadership Convention. The song’s somewhat sacrilegious chorus ends with : “The way things are goin’,

they’re gonna crucify me”. “They” in John Lennon’s lyrics were back-stabbing media and fans who disapproved of his beloved Yoko. When I linked the chorus to Mulcair, “They” are the frontstabbing-holier-thanthou-Tory-types in the PMO. Since the Canadian Reform Alliance Party (CRAP) and the Progressive Conservative Party (PCP) merged, there have been unrelenting and remorseless personal attacks on leaders of the opposing parties. First it was “Mr. Dithers” Paul Martin, then “unfit to lead” Stephane Dion, then “just visiting” Michael Ignatieff. They smeared Jack Layton’s last campaign with “massage parlour parlance”; before that it was “Taliban Jack”. Recently Bob Rae has been ducking salvos, but now all the artillery will be firing at Mulcair. From past attempts at musical renditions, it appears our PM is a Beatles’ fan: maybe by the 2015 election he’ll be singing another Lennon classic, I’m A Loser? Bernie Smith, Parksville

I have in the last while been deeply disturbed by the direction that many churches appear to have taken. It seems to me that we have become more interested in being socially acceptable than in being a life changing station. My bible tells me that Jesus came to seek and to save those that are lost, and that imperitive was passed on to those that watched Him ascend and thus to us also. Salvation was always accompanied by a radical change in the behavior and lifestyle of an individual ( Old things are passed away, behold all things have become new.) not just the signing of a church membership list. Let us again take this precious Gospel that changes lives and preach without fear or favor to a lost and dying generation.

‘Emotionally, it takes time to adopt your new culture because its roots are so deep.’ – Helma Swinkels volunteered in their kitchen. She’s since become a driving force behind fundraising for the hospice, and helped spearhead Potluck Ceramics — a nonprofit co-operative that raises funds for Ty Watson. Swinkels is still taken aback by the vastness of Vancouver Island and moreover the province when she first arrived.

“Everything is so close together in Holland but you have to remember that the country is the size of the Island and there are 17 million people living there,” she said. Swinkels became a Canadian citizen on Jan. 24 at a ceremony in Nanaimo, and Port Alberni is where she will spend the rest of her life, she said. It’s less an adopted home and more like a home. Leaving your home country is like losing your identity, Swinkels said. “Emotionally it takes time to adopt your new culture because its roots are so deep,” she said. “But I feel at home here and know I will spend the rest of my life in Canada.” reporter@albernivalleynews.com

New program centralizes employment services Island Work Transitions, Inc. will deliver the new employment program of British Columbia through the Alberni Valley WorkBC Employment Services Centre. The program delivers an integrated system of employment services and supports for unemployed British Columbians. The new format will provide a one-stop centre for employment and labour market services and supports for clients, employers and communities. The Alberni Valley Employment Centre (AVEC) will partner with INEO

Employment Services, Alberni Community and Women’s Services Society and Community Futures Development Corporation of Alberni-Clayoquot to deliver a broad scope of employment services to residents in Port Alberni, Tofino, Ucluelet and surrounding communities. The AVEC will continue to have satellite offices in Tofino and Ucluelet. The centres will assist all unemployed people to access selfserve resources, job search workshops, and provide case management for clients who require

access to training, wage subsidies, self employment training, apprenticeship training and job creation projects. This partnership brings in all the agencies in the community who are now delivering programs – or are the most capable of providing service to – the community. “There’s a lot more structure and a lot more sharing of information,” explained Bill Brown, community partnership co-ordinator. The referral process between each program is much easier, he

said, because all the partners are now operating under the same program. That means someone can walk into INEO, for example, and have access to the same information they would find at Community Futures. “It will service the community better,” Brown said. INEO Employment Services will continue to work with people who are on income assistance and will provide entrepreneurial training to people with disabilities. The new WorkBC Employment Services Centre is located at 4805-B Mar St.

From / 9 “He billeted with us and we were friends for the year he was there.” The two moved on with their lives. Swinkels married and continued to work as a dietitian. Later, her mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer and Swinkels cared for her. Her mother had the deepest impact on her life, she said. “She always made sure we ate as a family, got us together for breakfast and even though dad worked late she made sure we ate together,” Swinkels said. The illness was hard on her mother, who never once complained, Swinkels said. “She knew she was dying but she held her head up,” she said. “If others were leery about visiting her she’d call and say “You may not want to see me like this but I want to see you.”” Swinkels’ mother gave her the best advice she ever received, Helma said. Her mother knew Helma wanted to have children but also knew that her husband didn’t, Swinkels related. “She told me that it’s not the end of the world not to have children,” Helma said. “As a woman there are things I could never do, but you know, if I had children then I wouldn’t be here.” Now divorced, she returned to Canada in 2004 having first visited as a teen. She visited with Schievink and the rest is history. Not an idle sort, Swinkels got busy when she came to Canada. Buoyed by the experience of taking care of her mother, Swinkels took hospice training at Ty Watson House and later

HEALTHY LIVING e v i t c A

Health tip: Keeping your mind fit with word puzzles or math games is just as important to your health as keeping your body fit.

Keys to health help prolong life HEALTH TIPS: | Do eating healthier and exercising actually help us live longer? Check out these seven tips and decide for yourself. SANDRA GENTLEMAN

Healthy Living

As the population ages and family and friends start developing various illnesses, people wonder,’is there something I can do to live longer?” . There have been many longevity (length of life) studies over the years looking at a variety of different cultures

and populations to help determine if there is something in the environment or if the secret is in our individual health blueprints to determine how long we live. Generally, it has been found that there is a mix of genetics and environment at play that is responsible for our length of life. Looking to your parents and grandparents can give an indication of

a path you may be on for your later years, but many lifestyle changes such as eating and activity may help guide health in a positive direction along the way. There are many

things we are in control of to help improve our health through changes in lifestyle behaviours. Information is widely available, but may require assistance for navigating around the myths and realities. Canadian registered dietitian, Leslie Beck, wrote an interesting, comprehensive book, titled, Longevity Diet: Power of Food to Slow Aging and Maintain Optimal Health and Energy. Summarized are

the top key methods to optimize health through positive lifestyle behaviours: ◆ Eat a plantfocused diet (this could naturally reduce your overall calorie and fat intake,

which may improve cholesterol levels). Plant-focused eating will offer more fibre, phytochemicals (healthful, colourful plant chemicals, such as antioxidants), vitamins and minerals. This does not necessarily mean becoming vegetarian, but reducing the amount of animal protein you eat over the week may help. ◆ Daily physical activity, incorporating three main types,

including a) weight bearing exercise (walking, lifting weights) which is good for your muscles and bone strength; b) flexibility (to help coordination and balance); c) cardiovascular exercise (which can help keep the heart, lungs and blood vessels in good shape). ◆ Keep your brain alert (word games, math puzzles, learn a new hobby/skill or sport, or change your job). ◆ Sleep well (methods to help include establishing an evening bedtime routine, peaceful environment, limiting late-night snacks, caffeine, alcohol, and reducing stress at night). ◆ Keep a positive attitude (optimism about the future and viewing the world to see the good things may help to reduce chronic stress chemicals). ◆ Stay connected (volunteer, join a group or take on a project that interests you and that you are passionate about). ◆ Literacy. A newly released study from the British Medical Journal in March 2012 has indicated that there is a strong relationship between literacy levels and mortality. This study demonstrates a seventh important key to longevity, which is health literacy. Taking small steps to practice these seven lifestyle behaviours could help improve how you feel day to day, affect your quality of life, wellbeing and possibly increase your overall health and lifespan. Port Alberni figure skater Kennedy Lavertu capped an eventful season with a silver medal at the STARSkate provincial championships in Surrey on March 24. This was Lavertu’s first season competing in the senior bronze category (13- 17-yearolds) and she was one of 20 competitors from around B.C. Other Vancouver Island skaters came from Victoria, Kerry Park, Nanaimo, Parksville, Comox, Campbell River and Port McNeill. Her silver medal was a personal best performance and it also vaulted her into fourth place overall in B.C. in her category. Lavertu has enjoyed a successful skating season considering it’s her first year in a new category. “I love performing my program, and being consistent...helps my confidence in my

skating, she said. Lavertu has a solid support system in family, coaches and friends, and mother Karen Lavertu said that has been a key to Kennedy’s growth. “There have been obstacles to overcome in the past few years so considering these, along with coaching changes and travel, I am really proud of her accomplishments, Karen said. “She knows what she wants and is going for it. Lavertu travels to Parksville four times a week to work with coaches Larry and Leslee Rushton and also to visit former coach Jan Norman. She is affiliated with the Oak Bay Skating Club for her competitions. Spending this amount of time with her skating is key to her development, Karen said. editor@albernivalleynews.com

JOHNNY WONG SPECIAL TO THE NEWS

Snow outside — business inside JOAN THOMPSON

Pitch n’ Putt

As you’ve probably figured out by now, there were no ladies on the gold course this morning due to circumstances beyond our control. Heavy snow falling will do it every time. The 18-hole division ladies filled their morning with coffee and a business meeting instead. Many aspects of the

game of golf and course management were discussed. A lengthy discussion was held about the “gold” tee blocks and the fact that more of us should be using them when we play our game. It should keep handicaps in the lower ranges whilst making the course a little easier to play in these difficult wet times. This theory will be tested during the month of April. Many items were discussed and one

of them was the Challenge Pin, which this division plays for each week during our season. Nobody seemed to remember anything about the origin of the pin. I remember that it was initiated by an early lady golfer as an incentive for the ladies to challenge one another each Tuesday. The pin was a very old fashioned pewter beauty and when it was won, the recipient got to take it home and wear it for a week.

As so often happens, the pin got left at home from time to time or dropped into a golfers jewelry box and forgotten and in time went missing. The executive then awarded momento pins to the winners and they got to choose from an assortment as to which one they liked and could keep. The original challenge pin finally surfaced one day and was immediately seized and put into a frame where it resides today. Continued/35

Deakin family teams up for art show The Deakin family—10 siblings, with Patrick Deakin the eldest—are a well-respected, long standing Port Alberni family. Four of them are putting on an art show on Easter weekend to display their unique medium designs. The family will be displaying their works of art at Char’s Landing, 4815 Argyle

St. on Saturday, April 7 and Sunday, April 8 from 2–8 p.m. On Saturday evening sister-in-law Janet Deakin (who recently starred in Suds, the Rocking ‘60s Musical at the Capitol Theatre) will entertain through her music. Patrick will be guest speaker. The journey that led up to the Art Show began in 2011 when Kelly Deakin started

Wonders of Open Wings, Art by Kelly. She knew she had to take a step out of her comfort zone and into the world in order to start getting her work out there and recognized. Kelly has been into arts and crafts since she could hold a crayon. Kelly’s brother Tim has a creative streak that allows him to see

the potential in almost any item that most people would discard. He says he finds his inspiration in old tool stuff to cool stuff to tossed out and not so new stuff. Brother Sean began his journey of ancient stone carving more than 20 years ago. More recently he has shifted his creations to reflect his Celtic heritage.

Sean co-owned a company called Precision Laser Works, where he was contracted to design the entrance stone work at Best Western Tin Wis in Tofino. Kelly’s nephew Clinton, Tim’s eldest son, lives in Fort Smith, NWT and plans to take a leave in the summer to apprentice at a tattoo shop.

Club seeks the history of the original pin From/ 30 ...In the trophy cabinet in the ladies lounge area. If anyone knows the history of this pin, further than this, kindly contact Joan Thompson at (250)7241653...we’d sure like to know who started it and when it started. Speaking of the history of our club... we can thank the late Jake Stirzaker for keeping detailed accounts of the club activities ever since it was started. Somewhere along the line these records have been mislaid and it would be phenomenal to get them back...anyone know where they might be stored?..I believe there are about three suitcases full of information.. also, call Joan Thompson or the pro shop (250)7235422 if you have any knowledge of this missing history. In spite of our “gameless” Tuesdays, the ringer board is up and ready for your scores. See Sharon Haggard to get your name on it and get ready to play a game and enter your lowest scores, one day soon... we hope. There was a report on the Iron Lady Tournament held last October. The sum of $1500 was raised and given to the Ty Watson House thanks to the generosity and spirit of all the ladies that took part in this fun tournament. New organizers are being sought out for this year’s tournament so if you’d like to get involved contact Kathy White or Janice Cross or leave your name at the Pro Shop...you’ll get lots of help if you need it. One of the golden opportunities for this spring will be a set of game clinics which will be put on by our Pro, Bruce MacDonald. There will be four one-hour lessons: chipping, pitching, sand bunkers and putting. You will be in groups of six, so you can make up your own group or let

Bruce place you. The cost for the lessons is $60 per person...dates have not been set at this

time, due to the inclement weather but call the Pro Shop and get your name down. These are very

popular clinics and fill up fast. Last but not least... here’s a Golden Tip for free....when you’re

out playing on a wet course, always make sure that the ball is slightly forward in your stance so you

can pick it off cleanly without making too large a divot...AND, always keep your knees bent when you
