Township celebrates its volunteers Annual banquet recognizes outstanding contributions from the community Members of the community who help to make the Township of Langley the great place it is were recognized for all their efforts on Thursday evening. Residents joined Township of Langley Council at the Langley Events Centre to pay tribute to Langley’s exceptional volunteers, its top students, and those who work together to improve life for others. Among the awards handed out was the John and Muriel Arnason Volunteers of the Year Award which honours two people who are advocates of literacy, culture, and learning, and work together as a team to make the Township a better place through charitable, philanthropic, or other means. The award was created in memory of Muriel Arnason, the first woman to be elected to Township council, and her husband John. Muriel, who was made Freewoman of the Township in 2006, served on Council for 26 years, and was fully supported by her husband in her political pursuits, as well as in her initiatives to foster the arts, education, and literacy. It was awarded to Walter and Jan Poustie. For 26 years, Walter and Janice Poustie have been members of the Royal Canadian Legion. Twenty of those years have been spent in the Township, where they are known for being extremely dedicated — and extremely humble. Viewing their volunteer and charitable work as part of their life’s values and responsibilities, this Aldergrove couple has served both the Langley and Aldergrove branches of the Legion. They can be counted on to participate in special events and ceremonies, with Walter acting as Parade Marshall and leading the Langley Legion Pipes and

It honours an individual’s outstanding dedication to the promotion of quality of life through creative, cultural, physical, or social pursuits, and to the enhancement of

the Township of Langley’s community spirit. Eric Flowerdew was a school trustee, municipal councillor, and member of the Langley Hospital Bruce Board. His commitment Mavis to volunteerism was unfailing, and in 1974 the Flowerdew family honoured his name with the award. Mavis, a devoted volunteer with the Langley RCMP’s Community

Bruce was the much appreciated but unknown individual who would don the mascot’s costume and attend community events and parades, sweating in the heat and getting soaked in rainstorms. He also worked on Community Policing projects and displays, his most memorable being his Letters to Santa project. As a postal worker, Bruce would collect the letters that had been sent to Santa each Christmas. He would bring them back to Community Policing staff, who would write return letters on behalf of the Jolly Old Elf, then Bruce would make sure they were mailed to

the kids. A fixture at the Fort Langley National Historic Site for more than two decades, Bruce is also known to dress up on behalf of the Friends of the Fort to promote our community’s history. He has accumulated more than 700 hours of service at the site, co-ordinating volunteer activities, conducting outreach, helping with heritage projects, and doing meet and greet functions. Bruce is also involved with the Langley Heritage Society, and for the annual Douglas Day banquet he always ensures that volunteers dress in period costume and that the Royal Engineers are front and centre at community events. He has been a driver with Langley Meals on Wheels since 1992 and served on the board and as president, and helps people who have had strokes get in and out of the pool and walk in the water at the W.C. Blair Recreation Centre. He is a long-time Langley resident whose ancestors are original pioneers: his great-grandfather purchased the Fort Langley property from the Hudson’s Bay Company in the late 1880s. Today, Mavis Street in Fort Langley bears his family’s name, and Bruce continues to be dedicated to the village in a variety of ways, acting as Santa for children and as an interpreter for visitors from other countries. Mavis was selected to be a Torch Bearer during the 2010 Olympic Torch Relay when it came through Langley, and he is a great ambassador for locals and tourists. Other nominees for the Eric Flowerdew Award were Shar Dubas, Peter Luongo and Janet Megahy. “It is our pleasure to recognize these exemplary volunteers and to pay tribute to all the dedicated and enthusiastic residents who give so much of their time and energy to others,” said Township Mayor Jack Froese. “It is people like these who make our community such a great place.” For full coverage of the Pete Swensson Award winners, see pages 10 and 11.

GET WET THIS YEAR! Grand Opening Weekend at

Friday, April 13-Sunday, April 15th!

Exotic flowers? There’s an app for that. Visitors to the Sendall Garden greenhouse in Langley City will soon be getting an earful — of interesting facts, that is. Within the next couple of weeks a Trail Talker application will be available to smart phone users. It will serve as a portable audio tour of the tropical greenhouse, providing information about the 14 exotic plant species grown inside the building located inside the public gardens just off 50 Avenue. Mike Hamel of Trail Talker Information Systems Inc. made a presentation to council on Monday, April 2, explaining how visitors can use the service, which is modeled on a similar trail tour in Chilliwack. The site will be accessible by Quick Response (QR) code or via its URL. For those who don’t have a smart phone, the information can be downloaded and printed from the Trail Talker website. The cost to the City for the service is $5,000 per year. However, half of that amount will be covered by the Friends of Sendall Gardens Greenhouse, while the other $2,500 will be paid through operating funds already designated for the greenhouse. Friends of Sendall Gardens Greenhouse formed in 2002

when the City was considering closing the then-20-year-old building, as it became increasingly dilapidated. In 2000, council had voted to dismantle the greenhouse as a cost-saving measure to pay for an additional firefighter. Although Monday’s presentation was made for council’s information, not its approval, Councillor Gayle Martin expressed concerns about the cost of the project, saying that if every department in the City decided to go ahead with a project,“small amounts of money grow into large amounts of money.” Councillor Rosemary Wallace asked whether the project could be expanded to include more of the garden outside the greenhouse if the City decides it wants to do that. Hamel replied that it could be done, however it would

increase the cost of the project, he advised her. To learn more, go to www. trailtalker.ca.

Scooter repair ‘business’ booms for 93-year-old volunteer MONIQUE TAMMINGA Times Reporter

Cliff Steele has been one busy 93-year-old. Last month, The Times ran a story about Steele who fixes up used scooters and electric wheelchairs and donates them to those in need. He had contacted the paper to reach out to the community in hopes of getting a hold of more scooters. That request has been met.

“Things are happening so beautifully,” said Steele last week. “I have scooters coming in and going out. I’ve had 20 scooters donated already.” With a mechanics background, he was helping people out through word of mouth. But then he got in touch with the United Way, and since then, the demand for scooters has exploded. But with the new inventory comes more volunteers to help

too, he said. A retired friend of his who is “an electronics genius” has volunteered to help with that aspect. “That has been my weakness. But he can read the schematics so it will be great,” he said. Someone else has volunteered to pick up scooters as well. “Everyone is helping and it’s going great. “I’m run off my feet but it’s great,” said Steele.

Clark battles the odds

T

er party may be plummeting in the polls and her own personal popularity may be slipping, but Premier Christy Clark soldiers on, smiling for the cameras and maintaining a determined optimism. Recent bumps on the road have included the departure of John van Dongen from her party and reports that two senior ministers may not run in the next election. It hasn’t been going well for for the first woman leader of the BC Liberals and B.C.’s second woman premier. All of Clark’s evident energy, intelligence and media savvy have been unable to improve support beyond the brief, post-leadership bounce in polling numbers when she replaced Gordon Campbell. It’s been a downhill ride since then, a familiar one for any student of provincial political history. In B.C., it seems, women don’t get to lead a major political party until said party is circling the drain, almost beyond rescue. Rita Johnston became the first female premier in the history of B.C. and Canada in 1991, when she took the helm of the governing Social Credit Party after Bill Vander Zalm, another controversial figure, resigned. A few months after Johnston won the Socred leadership at a party convention, she was forced to go to the polls, She lost, badly. Mike Harcourt and the NDP took power. Grace McCarthy then took over as Social Credit leader following the loss and Johnston’s resignation, but by then, the decline was so pronounced that even the fierce former florist was unable to reverse it. It must have seemed to Johnston and McCarthy as though the men running the party waited until they’d messed things up beyond repair before giving a woman a turn at the wheel. Kim Campbell may have had the same impression after she took over the leadership of the federal Progressive Conservatives in 1993. Clark’s defeat isn’t inevitable, but her odds aren’t good. —Peace Arch News

he Conservative government’s reputation for sound economic management is taking a big hit with revelations from the auditorgeneral about the process used to obtain F-35 fighter jets. The new jets were known to cost about $25 billion, even before the last election. Yet the government and Conservative candidates consistently said the cost would be $14.7 billion. This was based on figures from the defence department, which was given far too much sway in selecting the new jets. It is obvious that they were the department’s preference, and everything it did was designed to get the government to go along. That’s where the Conservatives fell down. Whether it’s because the party has a stronger interest in defence issues than its Liberal predecessor, or because the ministers involved were relatively new to office (many of the decisions go back to 2006, the year the Conservatives took office), not enough tough questions were asked. Costs kept rising, and it is quite likely that the Conservative caucus had no knowledge of how quickly costs were jumping. It appears from Auditor-General Michael Ferguson’s report that at least some members of cabinet did know, and they should have blown the whistle when it became clear that costs were going up astronomically. To the government’s credit, it has now frozen spending on the fighter jet replacement program and has promised to be more accountable about decisions on the jets. It has also said it will be more diligent when making future decisions. Members of cabinet who make decisions about government spending need to treat every decision as if it was their own money. Taxpayers are paying plenty of their hard-earned income to the federal government, and their money should not be wasted because one department is able to hijack the procurement process. The Conservatives won a majority government last spring, largely on the basis that they would be the best stewards of tax money and would be the best party to help manage the economy. Many Canadians still feel they are the party best positioned to do so. The party needs to prove to them, and to other more skeptical citizens, that it can take care when spending tax dollars and are ensuring taxpayers get the best bang for their buck. Just because government is big is no reason it can’t spend wisely.

Public left out of firefighter decision Editor: In the Township 2012 budget, passed on March 26, I was shocked to find out that all eight proposed full-time firefighters were added in this year’s budget. Why was I shocked? I was shocked because this notion of adding them all in one year was never given public input. I did my due diligence (like many other Township residents), and filled out my budget questionnaire and attended the budget open house. What was brought forth to the public was bumping up the time frame for adding these members — the eight crew were originally slated to come in over a two-year period in the 2013 and 2014 budgets, but was now being proposed to move up to 2012 and 2013. Residents were not asked if all eight should be added this year. What frustrates me is how the need for firefighters has been presented to the public. The public is told that firefighters cannot do their job with a three-man crew, and that this does not meet WCB requirements. This WCB regulation that the chief and union are talking about has been in place since April 2000. The first full-time Township hall was opened in 2006. In fact, we opened all four full-time halls, knowing the Township was not compliant with this regulation. How have the firefighters been managing to this point with three-man crews? The fulltime firefighters have been back-filled with volunteers. I have yet to receive a direct answer as to how many times firefighters have had to wait outside a burning building with a person inside it, while they waited for a fourth member to arrive. Hopefully, they will never have to. I was told the union favoured opening four full-time halls, without the compliant amount of staff, over opening fewer halls with a full complement of staff. This tells me that managing with volunteers is doable (although not ideal). I also learned that many municipalities

are grappling with the same thing. I was told that adding the last eight remaining crew was always in the plan. However, it was slated to start after the conversion of the last full-time hall. Well, the 2012 budget is still paying for the last remaining hall conversion. This is why the eight new firefighters were originally proposed for 2013 and 2014. I was also told by the current chief that the eight new firefighters is just the beginning of what they really need. Don’t get me wrong, I actually support the notion of adding the last eight full-time firefighters to fully staff the halls. I love my local firemen as much as the next grateful citizen, but what I don’t like is scare tactics and being given half-truths. I also don’t think that letting the rest of the Township go to pot so that we can fall prey to these scare tactics is correct. And I definitely don’t like it when data from the public that the Township uses is stacked with union representation. But I think that what infuriates me most is the perception that fire safety is the only form of public safety in this town. I dare council to tell the three kids hit by cars in Aldergrove this past year, or the driver of the car in the ditch from a tire blowout (due to potholes), that fixing our roads and infrastructure is not a form of public safety. Ask the folks of Yorkson and Willoughby if they feel safe on 208 Street. The parents of kids who walk to school without traffic calming or sidewalks outside their schools, do their concerns about safety mean anything in this year’s budget? No. In fact, council has decided to forego these public safety measures in 2012 so that we can hire all eight firefighters this year, without raising taxes too much. Council and staff have done a good job in keeping the proposed tax increase to a manageable 2.95 per cent, but I am extremely

upset that it is being done at the expense of other important concerns in Langley, while council bows to the wishes of one sector. Public safety comes in many forms, not just in a red truck. My frustration begs the following questions: ❒ Why didn’t staff and council propose to the public adding all eight members in 2012? What is the point of asking for our input if you are going to do something completely different than proposed? ❒ Why the urgency in moving it up from 2013 and 2014? We knowingly chose to not have the full amount of staff when we opened our halls and we have been coping OK thus far. ❒ Since eight new firefighters is only the start of what the firefighters really want, what is to say that they don’t come forward every year or two and ask for more? And we all know the request for a fifth full-time hall is coming. And all in the name of public safety (and who can say no to that). ❒ How many times has a Langley resident been killed or injured waiting for a fourth firefighter to arrive at a fire? ❒ How many people have been injured or killed on dangerous parts of our road infrastructure? ❒ Why is there not a balanced approach to public safety represented in this 2012 budget? Why is 39 per cent of the tax increase going to one sector? No politician wants to say no to the firefighters. They are part of a strong, influential union, which backed six of the nine people elected to council. Saying no labels you as not supporting “public safety.” But I’m really getting the feeling that local politicians won’t ask hard questions of any union, for fear of not getting their support at election time. And this I feel is wrong. Misty vanPopta, Langley

S. Langley trail always meant to be multi-use Editor: I am writing this letter concerning a proposal from the Aldergrove chapter of the Back Country Horsemen of BC to Langley Township council to extend the South Langley Regional Trail from 256 Street, where it now ends, to connect to Aldergrove Lake Park. Opposition to the project seems to be based on a number of inaccuracies that the Aldergrove chapter of the Back Country Horsemen of BC would be more than happy to clarify, in an effort to ensure that all Langley residents have the benefit of factual and up-to-date information. The South Langley Regional Trail, approved by council many years ago to connect Campbell Valley Regional Park to Aldergrove Lake Park, is not and was never intended to be only a horse trail. It is a well-used recreational corridor popular with dog walkers, joggers, recreational cyclists and equestrians. The

The new section will also be a multi-use trail that will benefit the entire community, not just equestrians. If built, it will be designed by Township staff in consultation with a number of user groups to safely accommodate all those groups who have signed onto the proposal and project. This makes it a true partnership. Contrary to the belief that the cost of trail completion will be borne entirely by Township taxpayers, we would like to point out that we will be seeking funding from multiple sources — both public and private — to offset construction costs. Council made it clear it expects trail users to partner with the municipality on this project, and we wholeheartedly agreed to do so. The Back Country Horsemen and others will provide volunteers to help build and maintain this new section of trail under the

direct guidance of, and in partnership with, Langley Township. It should be made clear that equestrians and cyclists do share trails. They’ve been doing so for many many years on the trails at Aldergrove Lake Park, the South Langley Regional Trail and on many other trails throughout the Lower Mainland. The contention that expansion of Aldergrove’s inventory of trails does not have taxpayer support is not accurate. We’ve received a lot of support for this proposal, much of it coming from non-horse people and community groups, who see the development of multi-use recreational trails as a worthwhile investment in the health and quality of life of our community. Peter Thiessen, vice-chair, Aldergrove chapter, Back Country Horsemen of BC

SHOW LEADERSHIP Editor: Township councillors’ salaries increased to $42,936 in December, a 19 per cent increase. This is just ludicrous. They get double what City councillors receive, with two more councillors. Why? Other than the mayors, being on council is not really a fulltime, 40-hour week job. Do the math on the actual dollars being made per hour worked. Instead of pleading that they are just keeping up with what other municipalities are doing, what all the councillors should have done unilaterally was put a motion forward to refuse the increase. This is especially true for the two newly-elected councillors, who had two weeks on the job. This would have gained tons more respect from the public, and helped other municipalities follow and do the same. In so doing, council would show restraint and demonstrate costsaving initiatives from elected officials. The same goes for any other public service or union leaders in current or future labour negotiations. Businesses cannot go to the taxpayers pool to fund outrageous employee demands and wages, especially in current times. You have to show respect to earn it. Catfish Potesta, Langley

MAKE IT FEDERAL Editor: While I applaud Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts’ suggestion that the toll on the new Port Mann Bridge (once it is completed) should be reduced to 75 cents from the planned $3 each way, I think that there should actually be no toll on the Port Mann Bridge. That bridge is part of Highway 1, a national highway that crosses the entire country of Canada. It should be completely funded and maintained by the federal government, with no charge to the users. Perimeter road touted as ‘free’ alternative JEFF NAGEL Black Press

Highway 1 motorists who don’t want to pay the tolls that will be slapped on the new Port Mann Bridge this December will instead be directed to the Pattullo Bridge and provincial officials say the South Fraser Perimeter Road will offer a speedy connecting route to the free crossing. But some Metro Vancouver mayors question how well traffic will move on the new truck freeway. And they predict gridlock will await those drivers in New Westminster and Burnaby, where transportation ministry officials say Brunette Avenue will act as the signed free route to the Pattullo. “We’re going to end up with a massive amount of traffic,” predicts Burnaby Mayor Derek Corrigan.

“Right now we have no room on the roads,” New Westminster Mayor Wayne Wright said. “If there’s an increase in traffic, all it’s going to do is slow everything down or stop everything.” They spoke after Premier Christy Clark and Transportation Minister Blair Lekstrom visited Surrey Tuesday, April 3 to highlight transportation improvements and mark the half-way point of work on the South Fraser Perimeter Road (SFPR). The ministry has not yet determined exactly where it will put signs guiding motorists to the free crossing, but has promised to release details by summer. The northeast third of the $1.26-billion perimeter road is slated to open this winter at the same time as the new Port Mann, carrying westbound traffic as far as the Pattullo. Later, when the entire SFPR is finished

through to Deltaport, officials say other free alternate routes incorporating the Alex Fraser Bridge could also be signed, but they offered no specifics. Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts said the current plan means sending huge numbers of vehicles to a 75-year-old bridge that has been the scene of many fatalities over the years. “This makes no sense to me,” she said. “The traffic diversion is going to congest that whole area onto the Pattullo Bridge. It’s going to be a traffic mess.” Watts notes TransLink intends to replace the Pattullo by 2018 and probably add tolls to pay for it. “Then, when the Pattullo is constructed with tolls, what’s the plan?” she asked. “Or I guess nobody is going to worry about it until the day it happens. But as mayor of the City of Surrey, I need to be

worrying about it now.” Watts has repeatedly called for a fair tolling policy that ends the piecemeal tolling of bridges and instead implements consistent smaller charges applied region-wide. She said that would make more sense so drivers don’t divert away from the most direct route, increasing congestion, but Lekstrom and Clark have so far rejected the idea. Mike Proudfoot, CEO of the province’s Transportation Investment Corp., said modeling shows the Port Mann tolls will not cause any significant net diversion of traffic to untolled bridges, because other drivers now using those routes will switch to Highway 1 and pay tolls to take advantage of travel time savings. The first leg of the SFPR will run west of 176 Street and north of Highway 1. It parallels the CN rail line.

D.W. Poppy’s Lexi Niiranen (above), Brookswood’s Michael Pratt (below) and Langley Fundamental’s Haley Nickel (below, right) were finalists for the Swensson outstanding community youth awards.

The Pete Swensson Outstanding Community Youth Award is given to a Langley student in Grades 8 to 12, from one of the area’s secondary schools, in recognition of his or her athletic, scholastic, and community efforts. Personal qualities such as leadership, work ethic, and initiative play a major role in the evaluation process. The 2012 award winner was Walnut Grove Secondary’s Ashley Bull (see page 1). Here is a look at the other outstanding nominees: Whether in the water or on the stage, Lexi Niiranen loves to perform. As a member of the D.W. Poppy swim team, the Grade 12 student won silver at this year’s B.C. high school championships. The 17-year-old also

won bronze last year as a member of the Abbotsford Whalers Swim Club at the B.C. summer swimming provincial championships. But while she has swam for the past 13 years, Niiranen did not pick up music until Grade 7 band class. “I just fell in love with it, it is my greatest passion,” she said. “I enjoy creating something that other people can listen to.” “It is an emotion that is hard to describe,” Niiranen said. “I fall in love with everything that I am playing; it all just comes out so naturally.” “My goal is to have the audience feel the same emotion and passion that I feel when I play.” Niiranen mainly plays the alto saxophone, but can also play the clarinet, flute, tenor sax, baritone sax, and piccolo. musical and athletic exploits, Niiranen is a model student. Her work ethic has earned Niiranen awards for perfect attendance, hard work, dedication and leadership. She has been an honour roll student since Grade 8, and has been recognized for her excellence in math, band and P.E. She also volunteers as a coach on both the pool deck and in the music room. “That just helps me to put my passion out to the younger students and hope that they can continue with it,” Niiranen said. “I want to ignite their fire in their hearts, like mine was.” Niiranen hopes to study at UBC Okanagan and wants to become a high school math teacher, and possibly, music teacher. In her spare time, she is also working on writing a fantasy novel. ••••• The way Michael Pratt sees it, “everybody should feel like they belong to something, whether it is a sports team, a community or something else.” “I just feel if somebody as young as I can do something for the community, then maybe it can encourage others to feel the same way,” he said. And while he may be just 14, Pratt is well beyond his years in terms of his community efforts. Along with his sister, Elizabeth, Pratt came up with

Langley Youth for the Fallen, a non-profit organization which is creating a grove of 158 trees at the Derek Doubleday Arboretum. Called a Walk to Remember, the unique memorial honours every fallen Canadian soldier in Afghanistan. The siblings were also nominated for the Township’s John and Muriel Arnason Award. The idea for the trees came from a trip to France two years ago, when Pratt visited Juno Beach and saw a memorial for soldiers who died during the Second World War. “I wanted to commemorate the soldiers who died in my lifetime in a way that resembled that,” Pratt said. “I brought the idea home and roped my sister into it.” The Grade 9 student at Brookswood Secondary, is also active with the school’s athletic teams as a member of the basketball, soccer, track and field and cross-country teams. He also plays club basketball. In addition, he is a school leader. The honour roll student — with a 94 per cent average — won the French Immersion public speaking award, the Physical Education student of the year award and was named co-winner of the outstanding male athlete of the year among Grade 8s. of nominees elementary to high school. “At my school, there is a big emphasis on being leaders, helping students along in their time at Brookswood,” Pratt said. As for juggling all his extracurricular activities, Pratt says that is not a problem. “Growing up, my parents have always told me to manage my time wisely, so I try and set priorities,” he explained. “Once I get something done, I try and see how I can enrich my life and see how I can do my best in everything that I can do.” ••••• After plans to go on a mission trip with her church to Germany were denied because she was too young, Haley Nickel found another way to give. “I felt like I needed

to do something,” said the 17-year-old. Growing up, the Nickel family had always spent time helping out at homeless shelters. So Nickel and a friend decided they would spend their Friday nights volunteering at the Gateway of Hope Homeless Shelter. For the past year, Nickel has helped prepare and serve food to some of the community’s less fortunate. The work is both rewarding and revealing. “You get to see how easily you can end up in a place where you need help,” she said. “And getting to see that the community is willing to help is awesome, too.” Nickel also spent time in Nicaragua in late January and early February through her Global

Education class at Langley Fundamental Secondary, where she is a Grade 12 student. During her time in the Central American country, Nickel volunteered at two elementary schools and an orphanage. The trip taught her a lot, especially how important faith is. “Through their hardships, they still have such a love for (God),” she said. “You could see how important that is down there.” At school, Nickel is also a standout basketball and volleyball player and has won the Principal’s Award for the past three years as well as winning the athlete of the year award. She also plays club volleyball. Throughout her time at Langley Fundamental, Nickel has consistently been

on the school’s ‘A’ and effort honour rolls and has been recognized for her leadership and outstanding service in and around the school. While not sure if she will play volleyball at the post-secondary continued, PAGE 12

level, Nickel hopes to pursue a degree in global studies or business administration with an eye on working in some capacity for a humanitarian organization. ••••• While Darryl Brown has no recollection of a head injury he suffered in 2009, that has done little to slow him down. Riding a dirt bike during a summer camping trip with his family and friends, Brown crashed. Thankfully, he was wearing a helmet and full riding gear. “All I know is that my bike was found on one side of the road, facing the other direction, and I was on the other side of the road,” he said. He spent three days unconscious, another week in hospital and then was bedridden for another week with migraine headaches.

Once recovered, his parents, teachers and counsellors tried to get Brown to lighten his course load and give up rugby and soccer. But Brown went full steam ahead. “I didn’t want it to stop me,” said the now Grade 12 student at Aldergrove Community Secondary School. “I don’t feel any different now.” The 17-year-old picked up right where he left off prior to the accident: he has achieved 90 per cent or greater in 14 of his senior courses and in six of those, he has scored final marks of 100 per cent. A well-rounded student, Brown excels in calculus, math and physics, plus is studying trades courses such as welding and metal fabrication. He will attend the University of the Fraser Valley in the fall as he studies to

become a mechanical engineer. Brown is also actively involved in the community, helping an extreme home repair team rebuild a local family’s home. ••••• Maddie Millsip likes to keep herself busy. “I think I am more productive when I am busy,” admitted the Langley Secondary Grade 12 student. “I am very structured; the things I have to do, I get done because I know I have to get them done.” For the past two years, Millsip — who carries a 99 per cent average in her courses and has placed within the top 25 per cent in Canada in several math contests — has been Langley Secondary’s top academic achiever. And it is not just the classroom where she excels. At the provincial high school wrestling

championships, Millsip — who wrestles for the Langley United Wrestling Club (which is made up of students from Langley Secondary, Brookswood and D.W. Poppy) — won bronze in her weight class. Up until last year when she hung up her skates to concentrate on wrestling, Millsip was part of the Langley Figure Skating Club’s synchronized skating team. She also dances as part of her school’s Fine Arts Intensive Program, She hopes to wrestle at the university level, while also studying business. “I really like the fitness of it and the individuality of the sport,” she said. “Any success or any failure can be attributed to how hard you work.” Millsip also does musical theatre, vocal jazz and choir.

But the Grade 12 student is more than just a star athlete as helping out around the school and being active in the community both remain important to Kleingeltink. Kleingeltink

coaches the younger age groups, officiates games, volunteers on his school’s Sports Leadership Team, where he helps organize extracurricular activities for the athletic department. He is also part of the Langley Christian student council and teaches Sunday school at his church. “I just try not to waste the time that I do have,” Kleingeltink said. The key is to keep a schedule, and prioritize what needs to be done, he added. As for coaching and teaching the younger kids, Kleingeltink just wants to set an example for others to follow. For the 17-yearold, giving back to others is important

and he cites a threeweek trip he took last year to South Africa to visit Langley Christian’s sister school, as quite the experience. “It was really eyeopening to see how they live their lives compared to how we do,” the 17-year-old explained. “Simple things like tap water, which we take for granted, are huge for them.” Kleingeltink has applied to the University of the Fraser Valley, where he hopes to also play on the volleyball team. Kleingeltink, who has grown up on a dairy farm, plans on studying business with an eye on using his schooling to relate it to the agricultural industry.

CPA professionals have heard those statements and many more from people tired of being cheated, deceived or vandalised due to lack of security. The Police cannot be everywhere and vengefully lashing out will only cause the victims great anguish. At CPA International… we are proactive in helping everyone protect their families and assets. Knowledge is power, so use the tools CPA can provide and stop being a victim! With fully licensed and trained professionals, quality equipment and a commercial grade monitoring station, we are your eyes and ears. CPA International Investigations Inc provides a diverse range of services to their clients. Their trained Investigation and Security Specialists will handle your needs across Canada, the United States and around the world if necessary. The company provides a broad range of services to both corporate and individual clients. From child custody and marital infidelity cases, to missing persons, background checks, or even the theft of intellectual property (knock offs). CPA investigators are highly trained in all facets of surveillance and investigations. Other services provided by this agency include fraud investigations, assault, criminal and civil case investigations, including accident reconstruction. The company's motto is “May the Best Prepared Win.” When a case goes to court, if the evidence is not collected and documented properly, you could lose your case. CPA International Investigation's trained team will make certain you are prepared so that you will win… and CPA has the track record to back that up! President and Managing Director John Pisarski, established Langley as the new head office for CPA International Investigations Inc. in 2007. In 2008 he partnered with Security Professional, Heather Giuriato who is the Director of Operations. Pisarski has over 24 years in the investigation and security industry. Starting with assignments such as internal corporate theft and skip tracing, moving into

"I got into this industry bbecause I enjoy working with people and helping them." he said. NNot a profession for everyone, Pisarski added; as he has had guns aand knives pulled on him, been poisoned and was almost the victim oof a hit and run. GGiuriato has an extensive security background and administrative eexperience in the security industry and it is fair to say that security is iin her blood. Her father, Former RCMP Ron Minion was an expert in hhandling and training guard dogs, the first Certified Protection Proffessional (CPP) in Canada and founder of the International Founddation for Protection Officers. Operating Canada’s largest security ccompany in Western Canada, Heather worked along side her father aand learned the ropes from one of the best security professionals in tthe industry. If a break-in occurs or there is internal theft within the company, CPA can quickly and easily download the images and forward them to the authorities. ““It’s beyond alarm monitoring, this is live video footage,” Pisarski ssaid. ““We’ve made a big expansion on the big brother system where we’re eenabling people to not only to do it themselves but we will also assist tthem in gathering intelligence.” EExperts in preventing cyber crime, CPA private investigators can exaamine a computer system after a break-in has occurred. Process of redrawing electoral boundaries begins Canada’s electoral boundaries are set to change. Every 10 years, Canada’s electoral boundaries are reviewed and redrawn to account for movement and growth in the population. That time has come again. Ten independent commissions have been established to propose new electoral boundaries to better reflect population shifts and growth in each of the 10 provinces. As Nunavut, the Northwest Territories and the Yukon constitute one electoral district each, they don’t require federal electoral boundaries commissions. The Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission for British Columbia is dedicated to ensuring that the new electoral boundaries are fair to the people of the province. The commission will draft a proposal of the new boundaries while taking into consideration various factors, such as popu-

lation figures, communities of identity or interest, historical patterns, and geographical factors. The Langley electoral district may be altered as a result of the redistribution process. The South Fraser region is one of the fastest-growing in the country, and Langley Township has shown significant growth, as confirmed in the 2011 census numbers. At present, the Langley electoral district, represented by Conservative MP Mark Warawa, comprises all of Langley Township and Langley City. In the past, Langley has frequently been part of one larger riding. Most recently, before the current riding was put in place in 2004, Langley was part of two larger ridings, one which also included part of Abbotsford. The other had Langley City and a small portion of the Township connected to a riding

which was predominantly made up of South Surrey and White Rock. B.C. is set to get six new ridings as the boundaries are redrawn, with the number of MPs rising to 42 from 36.The next federal election is tentatively scheduled to be held on Oct. 19, 2015. After the commission has drafted its proposal, the new electoral map is published and members of the public are invited to comment and make their own suggestions. Public hearings are held, and everyone is invited to attend and provide input. After the views from the public are considered, the commission will submit a report to the House of Commons, where MPs will provide feedback that will then be reviewed by a parliamentary committee. The commission will consider the feedback from MPs and decide whether to

make any final changes to its report, which is then submitted to the Chief Electoral Officer of Canada for preparation of a document called a “representation order.” This final step allows the new electoral map of Canada to be officially implemented. The new map will be used at the first general election called at least seven months after the representation order becomes law, which will likely be the 2015 general election. Members of the public who would like to provide comments to the members of the British Columbia commission while they are developing their initial proposal, can contact them by e-mail (bc-cb@rfed-rcf.ca) or mail by April 20. To learn more about the redistribution of British Columbia’s federal electoral districts, visit www.federal-redistribution.ca.

Lori Watt is immersed in her character Lil, the ageing protagonist peeler in A Particular Class of Women, a play that squashes stereotypes about striptease. She pouts her lips to apply blood red lipstick, teases her hair and adjusts her corset to reveal just the right amount of cleavage. “Being an actress, it’s a fabulous thing — you can experience all these different things, but not actually live it,” Watt says. Written by Janet Feindel, who spent 10 years as a stripper, A Particular Class of Women is a revealing composite of life in the skin trade. It was inspired by a 1985 court case in Ontario, where a stripper was raped at knife-point. The presiding judge paid little attention to the crime because the victim “was from a particular class of women whose profession it is to promote lust.” “The judge somehow used that in his summation to be lenient to the rapist,” says a visibly indignant Watt. “That’s atrocious. Whatever profession a woman is in, a woman saying no is a woman saying no.” As the co-founder of The Frolicking Divas, a women’s theatre production company, Watt was drawn to the play not only for of its content but its realistic look at the lives of these often marginalized women. “You see a side of the women that is private and personal. You get an opportunity to know them as human beings and not as objects,” says Watt, a New Westminster resident whose character Lil has just been fired by the strip club manager for being too old. Lil, at 42, is a mother figure to the younger strippers. She advises them on how to court the bikers and admonishes them to cover up off stage. “She is all tough and really that’s not true,” says Watt, who has given Lil a thick Quebecois accent that allows her to deliver stinging lines with panache and flair. “The accent is another mask. I think it’s part of her costume, the person that she presents to the public.” Langley’s Angela Bell, meanwhile, plays Georgia, a character who, the actress says, has an astoundingly similar personality to her own. “In my private life shock value is very much my thing,” said Bell. “She’s (Georgia) got a particularly gregarious, outgoing but obnoxious personality. She has no filters and neither do I.” continued, PAGE 18

She puts up a tough front, but Georgia has done the most for the other girls, although she takes pains to hide the ‘den mother’ aspects of her personality, explained Bell. For her part, the Langley actress admits, she is a bit shy in some ways and playing the role of a stripper offered the chance to shed a few qualms — as well as a few clothes. Unlike the other characters who are already backstage when the story opens, Georgia makes her entrance from the street and changes into her costume on stage. “That’s where the subtle nudity comes from, she said. “We’ve all got our embarrassments. I’m critical of my physical self, said Bell. “But I’m not really nervous about baring my breasts. John Stuart, who is sharing directing duties with Simon Challenger

As a result, the atmosphere in the rehearsal space isn’t far removed from a dressing room at a strip club. “If you have been around strippers, they are very open about

their bodies, says Stuart, who allowed each of the eight actresses to chose their own costumes. “As the rehearsal process has gone on, they have become not only comfortable with me, but more comfortable with their characters. While perfecting the monologues for each character, Stuart focused on intent. “I want them to figure out why are they are telling us this, he

explains. To prepare for their roles as authentic exotic dancers, the cast met with a former stripper who worked with the playwright in Toronto and made an excursion to real strip clubs for research. “There is a prejudice in the population when it comes to this profession, but most of the women you talk to took this job because they could make a lot of money, says Stuart. “It was a means of support for themselves or their kids. They don’t hate the job, they love the job. These are normal women who just happen to be strippers. Honest, funny, sexy and sometimes crude, the characters in A Particular Class of Women are roles actresses often covet. Kaitlyn Busswood was looking for a way to spread her theatrical wings when she auditioned for the Emerald Pig production. The 22-year-old Aldergrove resident plays Pink Champagne, a young Polish woman who has been in the country for 10 years. Somewhat hostile toward the other women — all of whom have at some point slept with her husband — Pink Champagne has her eyes firmly on the prize, said Busswood. For her, stripping is just a step on the road to becoming a movie star. But she isn’t using her body in a demeaning manner, the young actress said. “It’s the way the world works, and she figures she might as well use what she has. That’s the case with all the women, she added. “They choose to do it because they get the money to live the life they want. More than a show of skin, the play offers plenty of food for thought, she added. “Yes, it is titillating, but it’s not just that. “I hope everyone takes home a deeper message. “It’s very emotionally gratifying, agreed Bell. “I can see people talking about the show, going for a drink after. – files from Brenda Anderson

Compete en plein air with Opus art store BRENDA ANDERSON Times Reporter

Whether it’s a picturesque park or a bustling street scene, local artists are invited to take a seat in the great outdoors next weekend and paint whatever they see. Opus art supplies will host their first Outdoor Painting Challenge on Saturday, April 21. Although they have participated in other community events in years past, this is the first time in the Langley store’s 15 year history, that it has hosted its own contest. Every Opus store from Victoria to Kelowna and around the Lower Mainland will participate that day, encouraging local artists to get outside and paint. It is open to all ages — both professional and amateur artists — however, everyone who participates will compete on the same level for prizes. Each Opus store will award prizes to three works, chosen on site by an impartial jury. The top prize in each location is a $500 Opus gift card, with second and third prizes being $250 and $100 gift cards, respectively. April weather can be unpredictable in B.C., but the event will go, rain or shine, said Chakara Brown, manager of the Langley Opus store. “If somebody is into plein air, they will paint in all weather,” she noted.

Working outdoors from life — as opposed to from a photograph — can change the entire feel of painting, explained Brown. Light quality, weather — and the changing nature of both — can profoundly affect an artist’s choices and techniques. Canvases and paper will be provided — depending on what medium each artist is working in — but everyone is expected to supply any other materials they require, from paints to brushes and easels. Participants will set up around Langley, but there will be restrictions in how far afield they can go. Once she has a better idea of how many people are participating, Brown said she will be able to designate a contest perimeter. Artists will be asked to sign in by 10 a.m. and return to the store with their finished work no later than 3 p.m. Winners will be announced at 5 p.m. Anyone who is interested in participating in this free event is asked to call or stop by the store at #95 5501 204 St. in the Langley Mall to register. Visit the Opus website for more information about the contest. There is also a short video online featuring a demonstration and discussion about plein air technique. http://opusartsupplies.com/ OPChallenge

Annual fundraiser for Big Brothers Big Sisters is a step toward putting an end to bullying Roll a ball and help put a stop to bullying. That may be a slight oversimplification, but the principle is sound according to a recent survey which not only states that half of all Canadians adults were bullied as a child or teenager, but that 85 per cent believe that providing children and teenagers who bully others with a volunteer mentor is an effective way to reduce bullying. On April 14, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Langley will host their annual Bowl for Kids Sake fundraiser.

The unique campaign challenges individuals and businesses to “step up to strike out” bullying in Canada by supporting the work of volunteer Big Brothers and Big Sisters. “Canadians universally understand that the friendship and guidance of a mentor is one of the most effective ways to prevent abusive behaviours and help those who have been abused,” says Mary Reeves, Executive Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Langley. “By giving children and teenagers the guidance they need to become the positive and caring individuals they are capable of being, we can steer them to a positive path in life.” The one-on-one and in-school youth mentoring services provided by volunteer Big Brothers and Big Sisters have proven to be instrumental in reducing bullying and other related negative behaviours such as lack of interest in school;

truancy; low self-esteem and drug and alcohol abuse. “We are doing the best we can to stop bullying, but more volunteers and financial resources are needed to get the job done,” Reeves said. “Mentoring programs can significantly contribute to reducing bullying and its harmful effects. We invite the community to take a stand by participating in the Bowl for Kids Sake kickoff event on April 14 at Willowbrook Lanes.” “People who accept this invitation will help local kids today and make their communities stronger tomorrow.” People and businesses can donate to the Bowl for Kids Sake campaign or volunteer to fundraise by visiting www. bbbslangley.ca for more information. Anyone who wants to help put a to stop to bullying can contact the office, after visiting the website, at 604-530-5055 to sign up a team.

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Harry. He leaves behind his loving wife, Joanne. Daughter Andrea, son Paul, numerous grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. You are loved and missed by all my darling. Forever in our hearts y

INGO LUHMERT After several years of enduring Alzheimer’s disease, departed this life to be with his Lord, March 27, 2012. He was 76. Born in Germany in 1935, he went to England as a young man to be, as he liked to say, ‘Civilized.’ While there he attended Bible College at Capernwray Hall in Carnforth, followed by nurses training at Walton Hospital in Liverpool. His travels led him to Canada where he worked as a RN for a time in the north. Drawn by the unique beauty of the sea and mountains, he moved to North Vancouver, before finally making Langley his home. Ingo worked at Langley Memorial Hospital in Maple Hill Centre until he retired in 2000. He lived out his Christian faith by helping others. If a ditch needed digging, a fence needed building, or a stranded motorist needed a hand, he was there. Ingo enjoyed the outdoors and was happiest working in his garden. He will be sadly missed by his loving wife, Susan, and their children: Lynn (Richard), Heidi, Karl, Andrew and David. He dearly loved all of his children, including those from his first marriage: Philip (Carmen), Kathy (Cliff) and Marie. A memorial service will be held at Bethel Mennonite Church, 24687 56th Ave, Langley, on Wed, April 11 at 10:30 am. In lieu of flowers, buy a pack of seeds and grow something. Ingo would have liked that.

KLEIBERG, Jacoba September 7, 1923 February 27, 2012 “Co”, aged 88 years, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family in her residence at the Williams Lake Seniors’ Village. She is survived by her sons Tony (Julie), John (Pat), and daughter Lynie (Greg); grandchildren Jay (Michelle), Diana (Keith), Leanne (Troy) and nine great-grandchildren as well as two brothers, John (Toni) and Bram (Klazina). Jacoba was predeceased by her husband Walter, grandson Shawn, sister Marie and brother Joop. Born in Numansdorp, Netherlands, she immigrated to Canada with her husband and son, Tony, settling in Edmonton, Alberta. Eventually they made Langley their home for over 35 years. For the past 7 years, Jacoba lived in Williams Lake - part of the time with her son and daughter-inlaw, John and Pat, and at the Williams Lake Seniors’ Village. The family will celebrate Jacoba’s life at a gathering in May. “When someone you love becomes a memory; the memory becomes a treasure.”
