New board A $2.4 million funding boost appointed for arena expansion project for CMSL Beach elected president for a second term REBECCA BILLARD It only took five minutes to appoint directors to the Comfor Management Services Ltd. (CMSL) board during an annual general meeting held in council chambers recently. The decision was made by Village of Burns Lake mayor and councillors based on their prior recommendations. New directors to the board are Village of Burns Lake Coun. Susan Schienbein and Wet'suwet'en First Nation representative Reg Ogen. Returning board members are Village of Burns Lake Coun. Quentin Beach, local resident and previously an alternate director Roseanne Murray, Burns Lake Band Coun. Wesley Sam and Wet'suwet'en Hereditary Chief Jeff Brown. Karen Ogen, Albert Gerow and David De Wit were also appointed

as First Nation alternate directors. Replaced from the board was former Village of Burns Lake Coun. Eileen Benedict and former Mayor Bernice Magee. Because the Village of Burns Lake holds the shares of CMSL in trust for the community, the six member board of directors for CMSL is appointed by village council. Of the six seats on the board, one seat is reserved for the Office of the Wet'suwet'en Hereditary Chiefs, one seat for the Burns Lake Band and one seat for the Wet'suwet'en First Nation. The chief and council of these First Nations groups is responsible for selecting an individual to represent them on the board. The three remaining seats are filled with an individuals from the community and the village. Executive positions were filled by vote during the board's first official meeting last week. For the second term running Beach was elected president and Sam was also reelected to the vice president seat. Murray was elected as board secretary. Brown was absent from the meeting.

Nechako Lakes MLA John Rustad, Mayor Luke Strimbold, Burns Lake Band Chief Albert Gerow and Regional District of Bulkley Nechako chair Bill Miller celebrated the $2.4 million funding announcement with Babine Forest Products sawmill employees and their families last week.

Multi sport facility expansion expected to be completed by 2015 REBECCA BILLARD Nechako Lakes MLA John Rustad arrived at the Babine Forest Products employee breakfast last week bearing good news for Burns Lake. As part of the ongoing community rebuilding effort, Rustad announced that the province is chipping in $2.4 million in funding to the approximate $3 million arena expansion project.

Clean drinking water is a big concern for First Nation communities.

Dubbed the Lakes District multi sport facility expansion and healthy living project, it will see the existing Tom Forsyth Memorial Arena and the curling rink combined into a multi sport recreation facility. As reported in the Lakes District News edition of Nov. 30, 2011, Village of Burns Lake mayor and council chose to proceed with the grant application offered by the Ministry of Community Sport and Cultural Development's community recreation program for the upgrades late last year. As well as the $2.4 million grant from the province, $392,000 will come from the Village of Burns Lake's capital reserves and general revenue over a three year pe-

riod, $113,000 from the Regional District of Bulkley Nechako, $40,000 from the Nechako Kitamaat Development Fund Society and $60,000 from Northern Development Initiative Trust. Village of Burns Lake chief administrative officer Sheryl Worthing said, "Funding has been applied for from other sources and we will continue to look for other funding opportunities, however the facility will go ahead as planned as the core funding has been secured." Once constructed, the two level multi sport facility will be a 10,000 square foot building that will join the existing arena and curling rink and will contain a squash More on page 2 ...

The whole region benefits when we come together to make these infrastructure investments in our communities.” Ida Chong, Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development also issued a statement via press release regarding the funding announcement. She said, “Recreation centres are often the hub of smaller communities like Burns Lake.” “They provide valuable opportunities for people to get involved in activities that promote physical fitness and strengthen community ties. It’s a priority for the province to promote healthy choices for B.C. families by supporting communities in their efforts to build or upgrade recreation infrastructure,” she added.

Grant funding to boost tourism potential LEDA captures economic recovery dollars for tourism initiatives REBECCA BILLARD A $9,200 grant to the Lakes Economic Development Association (LEDA) will help market Burns Lake as a tourist destination. Cindy Shelford, LEDA's economic development officer recently said to Lakes District News that the cooperative tourism marketing funding will assist in the production of a community trail map, a mountain bike brochure and will also help to update a photo image bank. "These are ongoing projects that we are working on,” Shelford said. “We started on the projects last fall but we need to make sure that this a good quality project and because LEDA lost funding from the Regional District of Bulkley Nechako and the Village of Burns Lake this year and I am now only working part time with LEDA, we said to Northern B.C. Tourism that we needed assistance with this project," Shelford said. As reported in the Lakes District News edition of Jan. 25, 2012 the Village of Burns Lake and the Regional District of Bulkley Nechako's area B, Burns Lake rural both decided not to renew LEDA's funding agreement for 2012. The village contributes $46,613 and RDBN's area B contributes $62,988 to local economic development initiatives annually. Of this, $60,000 went toward funding LEDA, $20,000 goes to tourism coordination and management in the Lakes District and $29,601 is for community economic

development grants. As a result of the funding cuts, and LEDA's request for help, Shelford said that LEDA is now working on the project in conjunction with Clint Fraser, from the Northern B.C. Tourism Association. Shelford said the project is in the process of being reconfigured and updated. The community trail map, once complete, will include local recreation sites as well as trails. "We will also be working on promotional brochures to showcase the Burns Lake Mountain Bike Park on Boer Mountain." As part of the project, LEDA is also in the process of developing a local photo image bank. "We already have a small photo image bank and the Regional District of Bulkley Nechako also has a small one, so we are looking at potentially combining these." Shelford explained that local residents will be able to submit photos to the photo image bank, which will then possibly be used for future promotional initiatives for the area. "People will be able to submit their photos, and we may also have someone go out and take some photos for us. Photos will be able to be added to the image bank at any time. They are a valuable asset and are a good resource to attract people to the area.” “An example would be movie producers looking to scout a location to film, so we could send them photos of the local area. Another example would be for use in promotional brochures or for people look-

ing to relocate to Burns Lake and want to see some images of the area first. We are still in the process of working out all the details," Shelford said. The image bank will likely be accessible from a website, however Shelford said this is still in the process of being developed. LEDA is also in the process of finding a new location to operate from. As reported in the Lakes District News edition of March 7, 2012, LEDA moved out of the Forestry Heritage Centre they shared with the Burns Lake and District Chamber of Commerce for two years. Brenda Hiebert LEDA chair said, "LEDA has moved out of the Forestry Heritage Centre as of Feb. 29 2012. With our funding being cut we have to watch the dollars we have left and the expenses at the Forestry Heritage Centre were just to great for us." While Hiebert did not want to comment further on the reasons for the move, she did say that the Village of Burns Lake was not renewing LEDA's tenancy agreement for 2012. "We are currently without a home, however we are actively looking for affordable space. Our phone is being call forwarded to Cindy [Shelford] and our possessions are in storage for now until we find some new office space." Shelford said two different downtown Burns Lake locations are currently being looked at as potential office space for LEDA. "We are negotiating for a good location which will be central to the downtown area," Shelford added.

REBECCA BILLARD

It’s good news for Burns Lake A $2.4 million funding boost for the Tom Forsyth Memorial Arena expansion project is certainly welcome news for Burns Lake. The project will see the arena and the curling rink morph into a multi sport recreation facility that will include a squash court, a children’s indoor play area and a climbing wall. This investment will be a big boost for Burns Lake, once completed it will provide locals with a great outlet for recreational entertainment. Not all local residents play hockey or skate, so it will be nice to have some indoor recreation options that are available year round and are off the ice. The facility will also help attract people, including professionals like doctors, to live in the local area. One of the province’s mandates for economic recovery in Burns Lake is to create projects that will boost local employment and while the construction phase for this project, which is set to begin this year, will certainly create some employment, the question of how much local employment this project will generate remains to be seen. Although the Village of Burns Lake plan to emphasize in the tender that local contractors be hired during the construction process, ultimately the decision to hire locally will be left to the discretion of those

awarded the contract. Most often, companies have their own labour crews and contractors, leaving locals to watch the construction from the sidelines. Let’s hope that doesn’t happen in this instance, because as nice as it is to have this funding announced for the facility, locals still need a source of employment, especially after the loss of the Babine Forest Products sawmill. I have heard a few comments from local residents that the province should be putting the $2.4 million towards the Lakes District Hospital replacement project instead. I agree that it does sound a little unusual for the province to be announcing funding for the multi sport recreation facility while the question of a new hospital still hangs in the air. What you have to consider though, is that this is an initiative applied for by the Village of Burns Lake late last year. The village applied for this grant from the Ministry of Community, Sport and Recreation after council decided to proceed with the arena expansion project. You also have to consider that this grant comes from a separate pot of funding than the Lakes District Hospital replacement project would. Getting this funding, will not negatively impact on getting a new hospital. Also when MLA John Rustad was in town to make the funding announcement for the multi sport recreation facility, he also announced that he will be arriving in Burns Lake again tomorrow for another announcement. He was tight lipped on what this will be, so we will just have to sit tight until then.

cial Credit. When familiarity breeds contempt, people vote to reject the familiar and see what happens. Or as one radio talk-show caller summed up his decision to climb on board the B.C. Conservative bandwagon, he knows two things about leader John Cummins, “He’s not Adrian Dix and he’s not Christy Clark.” It’s been more 21 years since Gordon Wilson reshaped B.C. politics and launched the modernday B.C. Liberal Party with a single quip in a leaders’ debate between a bickering Rita Johnston and Mike Harcourt. Cummins has about a year to show he’s earned his rising poll numbers, and to refute the conventional wisdom that he’s the best friend the NDP has had since Wilson put them in power and later joined them. So let’s get to know Cummins a bit better. He’s 70, and has an 18-year record as a Reform-Alliance-Conservative MP. His Ottawa days are mainly remembered for battling treaties and Aboriginal only fisheries, and for being the first Reform MP to reverse himself and take the MP pension. That pension pays him about $100,000 a year as he tries to build a second political career in B.C. Another legacy of Cummins’ federal record is his support for the harmonized sales tax. As he hastens to clarify, he supported Conservative legislation to enter into HST deals with any province, which Ontario and B.C. subsequently did. Cummins said B.C. could have brought in the HST at a lower rate to reflect its broader reach, as Atlantic provinces did. But they tried to make it a “tax grab” and now they’ve “poisoned the well” for many years. “We’re going to have to pay the price I guess, in the sense that where it has been introduced, it

has been shown to have grown business,” Cummins said. “Think tanks on both the left and the right have come to that conclusion.” To me this beats the NDP’s crude coffee shop populism that simply ignores HST benefits for small business and the poor. Speaking of crude, Cummins further distinguishes himself from the B.C. Liberals by endorsing the proposed Northern Gateway oil pipeline to Kitimat. He applauds the federal government for moving to place limits on submissions to federal environment hearings, citing the thousands of Internet sign-ups that have clogged the Northern Gateway hearings. His record on aboriginal issues suggests he has little sympathy for territorial objections from First Nations, those with treaties or those without. The April 19 by-elections in Port Moody-Coquitlam and Chilliwack-Hope offer a chance for the B.C. Conservatives to present policy alternatives. So far they’re against gas taxes, especially the carbon tax, against a second Metro Vancouver garbage incinerator, and in favour of fixing the ‘catch and release’ justice system. These are the slogans that stand in for actual policies needed to govern. Cummins will be going door to door in the by-elections, especially in Chilliwack-Hope, where he believes his upstart party has a real shot at winning. He offers a telling anecdote about the last time he was doorknocking in Port Moody, the premier’s former hometown. The B.C. Liberals have suggested the B.C. Conservatives chose Christine Clarke as their candidate to capitalize on the premier’s name recognition. That wasn’t what Cummins and his previously unknown candidate found when they first started campaigning. “She’d say hi, my name is Christine Clarke, and the doors would close rather quickly,” Cummins said. Now she identifies herself as the B.C. Conservative candidate, then gives her name. Tom Fletcher is legislative reporter and columnist for Black Press and BCLocalnews.comtfletcher@blackpress.ca

Tragedy fund society request employee info Privacy Act creates difficulties for society REBECCA BILLARD On March 19, 2012 the Burns Lake Tragedy Fund officially became a society and a new board was elected at an annual general meeting. The temporary committee has now been disbanded. The new board members are all local residents; president John McQueen, vice president Marvin Gerow, treasurer Jack Brown, secretary Susan Zimmer and directors Anna Bertacco, Laura Blackwell, George Deschene, Bruce Disher and Greg Kingcott. A criteria has been set out for people to apply for money. Assistance to individuals will be based upon the following priorities; injured workers, workers on shift the night of the disaster, workers employed by Babine Forest Products, other workers and employees of subcontractors of the mill and lastly community members who have become unemployed due to the economical effects of the mill disaster. Money is now starting to go to those in need and quite a few applications have already been received, however because of the Privacy Act at Babine Forest Products, the society is having difficulty gaining access to the names of all employees that were injured during the Jan. 20, 2012 explosion and fire as well as the names and addresses of all Babine Forest Products employees. The society needs to confirm employment at the sawmill, as well as employees addresses, because of this employees are encouraged to sign a release form to provide the society with access to this information. Release forms can be picked up at the Lake Babine Nation band office, Bulkley Valley Credit Union (BVCU), Lakes District branch or Lakes District News office.

The society is also requesting that people be patient with the process. Due to the issues presented by the Privacy Act they are finding it challenging to determine the names and addressed of the injured employees. The society is re-

quired to be diligent when handing out the money as they have a responsibility, not only to the Babine Forest Products employees, but also to the donors. The Burns Lake Tragedy Fund Society is also still accepting donations, which can be made at any Cana-

dian Imperial Bank of Canada [CIBC] branch in Canada. Applications to apply for funding from the Burns Lake Tragedy Fund Society can be downloaded from the society’s website at www.burnslaketragedyfund.org or www.hamptonaffiliates.com.

Forms can also be picked up from the BVCU Lakes District branch and the Lake Babine Nation band office. Filled out forms can be handed in at the BVCU Lakes District branch and the Lake Babine Nation band office.

Illegal hunter charged and fined Fraser Lake man pleads guilty to two charges CONTRIBUTED On March 12, 2012 the last of two men were sentenced in a Vanderhoof court room for their role in shooting a calf moose off of Stella Road near Fraser Lake. Kenneth Dixon of Fraser Lake pled guilty to one count using another person’s hunting licence to hunt moose and to a second count of discharging a firearm from a maintained road. The case dated back to Oct. 18, 2011 when a complaint was received

from a resident of Fraser Lake. An investigation by Burns Lake conservation officers and the RCMP revealed that Dixon had shot a calf moose while it attempted to cross Stella Road then used his hunting partners licence to cover off the kill. He was sentenced to pay a fine of $3,000 and suspended from hunting for a period of three years. Dixon’s Browning seven millimetre rifle used in the offence was

APRIL is Dental Health Month Denturists are Denture Specialists Denturists are denture specialists; they specialize in the manufacturing of denture prosthetics. Denturists have a professional designation of Registered Denturist (RD). The word denturist means: “A person licensed to fabricate and fit dentures to the public.” The scope of practice for a denturist covers relining, rebasing, repairing, full and partial dentures, dentures over implants and partials over implants. In British Columbia, denturists study the technical art of fabricating removable dentures. After graduating with a diploma, denturist students must intern for a specific period and submit a portfolio of completed and successful patient cases as part of the licensing criteria. Registered denturists have passed the government regulatory body exams. You do not need a referral from another health professional to consult with a denturist. A denturist can refer you to other health care professionals. Some denturists also attend to patients needs in home care situations or hospital visits. Denturists are proficient and time effective in the delivery of denture treatments. Most denturists fabricate your prosthetics on premises, ensuring quality control and care. Most denturist fees may be covered by various dental plans such as: • The Department of Veteran Affairs • Ministry of Human Resources • NIHB (First Nations an Inuit Health Branch) • Unions and assorted other private insurers. Ask your denturist for assistance with your insurer. If your current dentures are five years or older they may need replacing. Ask your denturist for an assessment of your current dentures. Quality replacement dentures can improve your health and appearance.

When Does a Denture Need Replacing? Many people believe that dentures last forever! Dentures should be replaced every five years. Wearing dentures for more than five years with out having them checked could be harmful to your health. A consultation with your denturist to have your dentures checked and cleaned could prevent problems in the future INDICATIONS YOU SHOULD RECOGNIZE Your face, jaw and tissues change over the years, but your prosthesis does not. Your dentures are made of a stable and rigid material and cannot adapt to these physical changes. Here are some of the signs indicating that your prosthesis should be checked: • Sore and irritated tissues • Problems with chewing certain foods, indigestion problems • Thinning lips, sagging mouth, a change in facial features • Loose, falling out when speaking or laughing • Has discolored or has an odor • Softening of the tissues • Headaches, neck, or ear pain • Bone (ridge) loss • Your partial is kept in your pocket most of the time These changes happen gradually and are mostly imperceptible to you. Your appearance and comfort are compromised the longer you delay replacing your prosthesis. Your denturist is the most qualified person to tell you when a denture needs replacing. When was the last time you saw your denturist?

Editor: On the night of March 21, 2012 first responders were called to our driveway to attend to a two vehicle accident involving nine people. The speed in which the police department, fire department, ambulance service and towing service got there was amazing. It is a comforting feeling knowing that people will drop what they are doing to help someone out. I was also equally impressed with our local hospital. The nurses, doctor and the radiologist who was called in to look after and assess all of us did so with such care and efficiency. Three of us needed further care in

Prince George we needed to be transported to Prince George Regional Hospital. The ambulance service from Fraser Lake came to get me and drove me to the Vanderhoof hospital. It was amazing how four different communities came together to provide me the level of medical care I needed. Through everything that has happened, I have a greater sense of community. One that extends beyond our town limits and spills into our neighboring community. Say what you want about small town living, but it is sure a comforting feeling knowing that when you need help, you know the men and women who are rushing to get to you. Megan Benson

Electricity demand increasing Editor: It is scary to think that I was four years old the last time a major hydroelectric dam was built in this province. That was back in 1984, when the Revelstoke dam was built on the Columbia River. Nothing of significance has been added since then.

There were fewer than 3 million people living in B.C. in 1984 and more than enough power for them all. Now, B.C.’s population is over 4.6 million and new uses for electricity pop up every day. Unfortunately, you can only stretch an elastic band so far before it

snaps, which sums up the state of B.C.’s aging hydroelectric system. What an incredible debt of gratitude we owe to previous generations for the investments they made, that we’ve all benefitted from greatly and for such an incredibly long time. Jesse McClinton Victoria

Log export policy shifts and Liberal party donations flow TOM FLETCHER Forests Minister Steve Thomson plans to visit a Surrey based forest company next week to discuss a shift in log export policy that producers say is diverting more B.C. logs to Asian buyers willing to pay up to twice as much as B.C. mills are offering. Thomson was peppered with questions in the legislature for a second day last week about his ministry overruling its Timber Export Advisory Committee (TEAC) and allowing log exports despite an offer from Teal Jones Group to buy the logs for its B.C. mills. Teal Jones chief financial officer Hanif Karmally said the company is ramping down production and shifts due to a lack of log supply. It could put another 100 to 115 people to work if it had more logs, particularly to feed its small log mill. Teal Jones’ Surrey operation is the largest

lumber producer on the B.C. coast, with a large log mill and shake mill in addition to the small log mill it opened in 2003 after a $30 million investment. Total coastal log exports increased to a record 5.87 million cubic meters in 2011, up from 3.86 million in 2010, according to forest ministry figures. That includes logs exported from private land, which are regulated by Ottawa. About 20 per cent of logs from Crown land in coastal B.C. are going to export. Thomson told reporters the TEAC changed its policy on how it declares logs as surplus to domestic needs, and how it calculates the domestic market value. Cowichan Valley NDP MLA Bill Routley told the legislature that Nanaimo based Coastland Wood Industries as well as Teal Jones is seeing a log shortage. “I’ve been told by mill managers that more B.C. mills will be gone if this level of raw

log exports continues,” Routley said. Truck Loggers’ Association executive director Dave Lewis says B.C. has restricted coastal log exports for decades, but it has not solved the industry’s basic problems. “Domestic buyers can only afford to pay $60 for a log that costs $78 to harvest,” Lewis said. The TLA organized a forum on log exports to counter criticism of log exports. “To put things very bluntly from a Terrace area perspective, if log exports were banned today, we might as well close the doors and throw away the keys,” said Bill Sauer of the North West Loggers Association. Teal Jones co-owner Dick Jones said his company is not averse to log exports provided the rules are followed, and TEAC decides if logs are offered at fair market value and declared surplus. B.C. Liberals retain big lead in donations

Liberal party donations flow The B.C. Liberal Party has slipped in public opinion polls, but it’s still far out in front in the race for donations. Financial statements released Wednesday by Elections BC show the B.C. Liberals collected more than $8.9 million in political contributions in 2011. About $5 million of that came from corporations, with most of the rest from individuals. The B.C. NDP collected $4.4 million in political contributions last year. The vast majority was individual donations, with $831,000 from unions and about $230,000 from corporations and businesses. Large individual donations to the B.C. Liberals included $100,000 each from Richard Ilich and John S. Major, $50,000 from Teck Corp. chairman Norm Keevil, and $50,000 from Gwyn Morgan, the former EnCana CEO who now serves as an advisor to Premier Christy Clark.

Companies controlled by Vancouver Canucks owner Francesco Aquilini donated a total of $128,000. Other corporate donors included Cactus Restaurants Ltd., which donated $42,500, and Earl’s with more than $24,000, despite the B.C. Liberal government’s imposition of the harmonized sales tax and increases to the provincial minimum wage. Railways, forest and pharmaceutical firms also lined up to donate to the B.C. Liberals, a trend that has seen the party collect roughly double the amount of the NDP over the past decade. Natural gas producer EnCana gave the B.C. Liberals $146,200, and the largest single donation of $210,000 came from Vancouverbased mining company Goldcorp Inc. The B.C. Liberals finished 2011 with more than $1.5 million in the bank, although loans and other liabilities leave it with a surplus of just under $400,000 with an election just

over a year away. The NDP finished 2011 with a deficit of nearly $100,000, in a year when both major parties had leadership conventions as well as regular costs of operation. The B.C. Conservative Party is going into two April 19 by-elections with $124,780 in the bank. Donations from individuals in 2011 total nearly $70,000, and account for most of the party’s 2011 income. Their biggest donors are Ian G. Pyper and Margaret Pyper, who donated $5,000 each to the B.C. Conservatives last year. The party also got $5,000 each from Cobra Venture Corp. and Perpetuity Investments Ltd., along with a third corporate donation of $1,000. Both the NDP and B.C. Conservatives call for an end to corporate and union donations to provincial political parties, a rule that already applies to federal parties.

Yap replaces Bloy in B.C. cabinet Premier Christy Clark has appointed Richmond-Steveston MLA John Yap as Minister of State for Multiculturalism. Burnaby-Lougheed MLA Harry Bloy resigned from cabinet March 15 after admitting he had leaked an email from a Vancouver newspaper reporter to the advanced education ministry. The reporter was probing complaints about Vancouver private schools catering to Asian immigrants. Clark also appointed Va n c o u ve r- L a n g a r a MLA Moira Stilwell to a new role, parliamentary secretary to the health ministry, responsible for health care innovation. Stilwell is a radiologist and nuclear medicine specialist. Clark created a second new role by appointing Richmond Centre MLA Rob Howard parliamentary secretary to the transportation ministry, focused on air services agreements.

Burns Lake 42 in province for Earth Hour 2012 Earth Hour 2012 breaks worldwide participation records REBECCA BILLARD Local residents managed to reduce their electricity consumption by 2.52 per cent during the Earth Hour 2012. According to Bob Gammer from BC Hydro, local energy saving efforts during the one hour event put Burns Lake in 42 place in the province, behind the Hazeltons and Richmond. During 2010, Burns Lake claimed Earth Hour's top spot in the province, with a seven per cent drop in consumption. The top community this year was Revelstoke, with 12.15 per cent savings, followed by Pemberton at 6.8 per cent. Stephanie Beerling, village director of corporate services said lights in the municipal office were turned off in recognition of Earth Hour. According to Beerling, the street lights are not able to be shut off

during Earth Hour because they are on a hard wired system controlled by photocells that don’t have manual switches. British Columbians in the 91 participating communities across the province saved 121 megawatt hours of electricity and reduced the provincial electricity load by 1.67 per cent. Gammer said this years provincial energy savings was about the same as the 1.8 percent drop in energy consumption during Earth Hour 2011. "It is the equivalent of turning off about nine million 12.5 watt LED light bulbs. The event shows that British Columbians can make a difference in energy conservation through simple efforts," he said. Earth Hour is an annual global event hosted by the World Wildlife Fund and supported provincially by BC Hydro. This year marks the fifth year of BC Hydro’s support of the event. Earth Hour began in 2007 in Sydney, Australia when approximately 2.2 million homes and businesses turned out their lights for one hour to make a stand against climate change. Since then landmarks such as the Sydney Harbour Bridge in Australia, Toronto's CN Tower and the Golden Gate Bridge

in San Francisco have all stood in darkness to show support for awareness to climate change. Earth Hour is now a globally recognized initiative and millions of people across the globe turn out their lights on this day every year. "The goal is to encourage individuals to turn off unnecessary lights and electronics in an effort to conserve power and in doing so, demonstrate support for climate change reduction efforts," Gammer said. According to the World Wildlife Fund, worldwide participation in Earth Hour 2012

broke previous participation records, with 150 countries and territories across 6,494 towns and

cities participating in the global event. During 2011, 135 countries participated.

An active Northern real estate market More people than usual looking to buy in Burns Lake REBECCA BILLARD According to the B.C. Northern Real Estate Board (BCNREB), 22 Burns Lake area properties worth $2.8 million have changed hands since Jan. 1 2012. During the same time period last year 12 properties worth a combined total of $1.3 million changed hands in the local area. At the end of March there was 104 properties of all types available for sale through the MLS in the area. This compares with 108 properties for sale during the same period last year. The B.C. Northern Real Estate Board also say the average selling price of homes in the Burns Lake area has increased since 2010. As of March 31, 2010, the average selling price of local homes was $95,150, however the average selling price as of March 31, 2011, was $128,785 and as of March 31, 2012, the average selling price in-

creased to $147,032. Doug Phair, a sales representative from Remax Wrightway in Burns Lake said, "The real estate market in Burns Lake has been a little more active than usual, surprisingly with people looking to buy. After the Babine Forest Products tragedy we didn't get inundated with people wanting to sell their homes as we thought we might so this is really positive." Phair said he attributes the increases in the average selling prices of homes over the last two years to the sales of higher end properties, rather than increased property values. "The property market in Burns Lake is encouraging. While we are not inundated with buyers, we are not noticing a slow down either," he said. BCNREB say there was 1,002 sales through the Multiple Listing Service® across the North during the first quarter

of 2012, with a value of more than $220 million. This compares with 826 sales worth nearly $175 million to the end of March 2011. “There is positive news for both buyers and sellers in the Northern market," said board president Joni Brown. “A healthy increase in sales in most areas has resulted in lower inventory of properties, which is good news for sellers. At the same time, buyers still have the benefit of historically low interest rates, suggesting that it is a good time either to enter the market or to upgrade,” she said. As of March 31, 2012, 65 homes in the Smithers area with a combined value of $14.9 million sold. This is up from 42 sales with a combined value of $8.8 million during the same time period last year. In Vanderhoof there was 17 sales worth $4 million in the first quarter of 2012, this is a slight decrease, from 19 sales worth $3.5 million

Featuring the spirit of the local people BLMBA aiming for an epic trail experience Provincial funding announced for the completion of the Stearns Creek Canyon Trail REBECCA BILLARD A $144,203 provincial grant, provided by the Ministry of Community Sport and Cultural Development will see the Stearns Creek Canyon Trail to completion. Burns Lake Mountain Bike Club (BLMBA) president Kevin Derksen said the trail, which forms part of the bike club's Boer Mountain trail system will be completed in two phases, beginning this year. Phase one of the approximate 20 kilometre long trail was officially opened late last year and takes riders to a connection on the far end of Kager Lake and continues on to the end of Long Lake. It fea-

tures approximately 4.2 kilometres of twists and turns through poplar stands and evergreens, over creeks, rocky hill tops and several bridge crossings. "Phase one of the Stearns Creek Canyon Trail is spectacular," Derksen said adding, that when designing the trail BLMBA focussed on the quality and experience of the ride. "The ride is not only a challenge, but there is scenic vistas to enjoy along the route." The trail, once all three phases are complete, will lead riders on a vertical climb to the top of Boer Mountain, past a series of water falls in Stearns Creek Canyon and will offer access to Long Lake.

The third phase of the trail will follow along a series of cliffs on Tintagel Ridge. "There are some awesome views from the top of Boer Mountain and Tintagel Ridge. There will be some epic visual rewards to those riding the trail." Derksen estimates that it will take a few hours to ride the complete Stearns Creek Canyon Trail and he said eventually the trail will connect to other trails at the bike park. "Most of the trails are connector trails, which allows for a diverse riding experience and there is something for everyone from beginner to experienced," Derksen said. He said BLMBA

hopes the trail will become an International Mountain Biking Association (IMBA) 'Epic' trail and is being constructed with this in mind. If you are a mountain biker the IMBA Epic trails are sure to be on your bucket list. Derksen said for a trail to be given an IMBA Epic title is an honour that has so far only been awarded to 58 trails worldwide and IMBA claim the designation can draw up to 10,000 to 20,000 avid mountain bikers to the trail per season. Just four trails in Canada are designated as IMBA Epic trails including Comfortably Numb in Whistler, the Seven Summits Trail in Rossland, the Eagle Ridge Expedition in Vancouver and added to the list in 2011 was the Mountain Hero Trail, Yukon. "IMBA is looking for everything that we are planning. The Stearns Creek Canyon Trail is close to community services, and close to a network of other quality trails with multiple looping routes ... we have the whole package. Once built we are going to shoot for that title and we are building the trail with that goal in mind. The trail

will be an amazing riding experience. I am really excited about this," Derksen said. Prior to building any mountain bike trails in Burns Lake Derksen said BLMBA consulted with Mark Schmidt, IMBA Canada director and trail specialist about the best possible location and Derksen said Schmidt recommended Boer Mountain for a number of reasons, two of which were the sunny aspect allowing a faster snow melt for a prolonged riding season and due to the fact that the area is not logged. "Boer Mountain really has that back country feel. From the beginner trails to the experienced trails everything we have done at the bike park mirrors the original direction Mark [Schmidt] provided. The trail quality on the cross country trails is textbook IMBA," Derksen added. The work on phases two and three of the Stearns Creek Canyon Trail will be spread over two seasons and will be done by local machine operator Shawn O'Meara. "Shawn has a natural ability for trail building. He was part of the Gravity Logic Team project on Boer Mountain in 2009 and has built trails

"He is also a mountain bike rider which helps in the process," Derksen said. Derksen said all of the layout for the trails will be done by BLMBA. BLMBA is also working on a new trail map. "It has everything a mountain biker would want to know including, places to stay and rest areas. Once it is finished the map will be available at the Tourist

Information Centre and a larger version will be posted in the sign kiosks at the bike park. It will be a glossy, full colour pocket sized map and is funded through Northern B.C. Tourism." The project, which Derksen said has been ongoing since last fall, will feature local reference points for tourists. "The timing for the Stearns Creek Canyon Trail funding is perfect, because we will now be able to include the entire trail on the map."

BLComfor promotes sustainability Local residents can rest assured that their community owned forest corporation has clearly defined objectives, strong reforestation policies and a sustainable harvesting plan. That’s the word from Dawn Stronstad, manager of BLComfor. Stronstad made the comments after reviewing auditor general John Doyle’s recent report on the management of B.C.’s public forest lands by the provincial Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations. The auditor general concluded that the provincial government’s timber objectives are not clearly defined and are insufficient to offset a trend toward future forests having a lower timber supply and less species diversity in some areas. “The Burns Lake Community Forest may be located on Crown land, but its management objectives are clearly defined,” Stronstad said. “The Burns Lake Community Forest is being managed for sustainability and in compliance with the five year management plan and based on a thorough, recent forest in-

ventory. We’re replanting our forests promptly after they’re harvested and managing for a wide range of values.” While many provincial forest inventories are outdated, management strategies for BLComfor are derived from a detailed inventory conducted between 2006 and 2009. Its aggressive reforestation policy has also resulted in the replanting of 90 per cent of harvested forest lands. “Between the years 2000 and 2011, BLComfor harvested 7,422 hectares of forest land. Of this total, 6,660 hectares have been replanted. In the last 11 years, our contractors have put 10 million seedlings in the ground and we intend to plant another 700,000 this spring.” Stronstad said Crown lands within the community forest are being managed in such a way that residents will continue to realize benefits from them. “The community forest’s annual allowable cut was set by the province utilizing inventory data collected between 2006 and 2009. In February 2011, its annual allowable cut was set at 260,000 cubic meters per year until 2013.

CORNER ommunity Forest

Managing for goshawks

The northern goshawk is a raven-sized raptor inhabiting coniferous and mixed-forest landscapes. They occur in densities of about 2-10 pairs per 100 km2. Their main prey includes snowshoe hare, grouse, squirrels and some small birds. Goshawks typically nest in mature and old stands with a closed canopy and open understorey. Several goshawk nests are located within the BLCF tenure area. Some have been radio-collared to monitor their movement. Studies are being carried out to investigate the impact of the mountain pine beetle kill. BLCF has left several unharvested areas in the vicinity of known nest locations. “Breeding area” - the nest and associated post-fledging areas - tend to be spaced every 4-6 kilometres, and can be used intermittently for years or decades. Local teen Jasmine Tom takes a shot at the net during the Team B.C. player selection camp for the National Aboriginal Hockey Championships. Tom was recently selected to play in the 2012 Team B.C. female, for the second year running. Locals Brett Michell, Shelby Tom and Cassie Sam also attended the Team B.C. player selection camp held at the Shulus Community Arena in Merritt, but unfortunately missed out on being selected to the female or male teams. A total of 39 girls and 85 boys from across the province tried out for the teams. The national tournament will be held in Saskatoon from May 6-11, 2012.

REBECCA BILLARD

The family of a man who sadly passed away at the scene of a two vehicle accident on Hwy. 16 recently have asked that his name be released. According to Cst. Robin Dupuis, from Burns Lake RCMP Traffic Services, Theodore (Ted) George Davis, 56, a resident of Houston, sustained fatal injuries in the tragic accident. "Ted’s sister who lives in Burns Lake and his son who lives Houston have requested that his name be released," Cst. Dupuis said, adding that the family wishes that people respect their privacy during this time of grief. As reported in the Lakes District News edition of March 28, 2012, at approximately 8:35 a.m. emergency services responded to a two vehicle collision involving a pick up truck and a tractor trailer on Hwy. 16, approximately 1.6 kilometres East of Six Mile Hill, near Topley. RCMP requested a Terrace collision analyst attend the scene to assist in the investigation. An initial investigation of the scene closed the highway for approximately seven hours, after which there was a single lane alternating for a further two hours. The highway was fully reopened at 9 p.m. "The roads were covered with icy and slippery sections, but at this time it is unknown if this is a factor. It is also unknown if speed was a factor. The investigation is ongoing," said Cst. Dupuis. Burns Lake RCMP is asking anyone who witnessed the collision to come forward. Anyone with information can either attend the Burns Lake or Smithers RCMP Detachments or contact the lead investigator Cpl. M. Cloutier at 250-8473233 or Cst. Dupuis at 250-692-7171.

HOROSCOPES Week of April 11 - 17 th

GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, work on rebuilding a relationship that may once have taken a backseat to more pressing matters. You never know when you need to call in a favor.

As many as 1.5 million Visa and MasterCard accounts may have been compromised by a security breach at Global Payments. The attack occurred between late January and late February of this year, but was only announced recently. GP claims that the scope of the attack was contained before sensitive personal information was lost, but if you have used Global Payments services, keep a close eye on your credit card statement.

Just a reminder to be wary of any phone calls you receive that are made on behalf of “Microsoft” or the “Windows Support Center”. These callers will often claim your computer is infected with a virus, and offer to fix it for you for a large fee. Do not listen to them, it’s a scam. Unless you have an open support ticket, Microsoft will never try to call you directly.

th

LIBRA - Sept 23/Oct 23 Libra, sometimes you want to play the role of the savior. While your efforts are generous, not everyone will accept your advice or your gestures. SCORPIO - Oct 24/Nov 22 Pick your battles, Scorpio, because not everything will necessarily go your way. There is no point in creating extra stress and grief for yourself. SAGITTARIUS - Nov 23/Dec 21 Sagittarius, relax and open up to the ones you love. You may be surprised just how fulfilling and liberating this can feel, especially when you do it frequently.

CANCER - Jun 22/Jul 22 Cancer, your stubbornness appears once you set your mind to something and get to the task at hand. This can have its pros and cons, especially at work.

CAPRICORN - Dec 22/Jan 20 Capricorn, lean on friends and family when a difficult situation presents itself. Not everything has to be a secret this week; you can use some support.

LEO - Jul 23/Aug 23 Leo, you have exerted all your energy and now you’re looking to lessen the workload. Now could be the time to delegate some of your responsibilities to others.

AQUARIUS - Jan 21/Feb 18 Aquarius, expect to see everything in black and white in the days ahead. This is alright, just avoid taking this perspective to the extreme. Sometimes you have to have faith.

VIRGO - Aug 24/Sept 22 Virgo, accepting help is not a weakness. While you may want to be an independent person, accept the help others have generously offered.

PISCES - Feb 19/Mar 20 Pisces, things are changing all around you and you’ll get left behind if you don’t make some attempts to catch up.
