Diesel spill in Fernie's Annex pond By Angela Treharne Free Press Staff

A
truck delivering diesel in Fernie has leaked fuel into the Annex pond. The spill happened at around 2 p.m. Wednesday last week, when a tanker was delivering diesel to the Fernie Cardlock. A woman walking her dog in the area noticed the diesel floating on the pond and called Fernie Fire Rescue. "There was a diesel spill that got into the storm drains and rain flushed it into the Annex pond," said Fire Chief Shaun Ivany. "We believe it came from a tanker making a delivery to the Cardlock."
Gary Tomlinson, owner of Cardlock, said the driver was completing a delivery of fuel and forgot to put the cap on the hose. "He was rolling up the hose and dropped the end and had not put the cap on it so fuel came out. "It was raining heavily and diesel floats on water, so it was washed into the drains." Fernie Fire Rescue responded to the site and started work to prevent the spill spreading. "We put down booms on the water to prevent it spreading into the water, and we put down sand to try to stop it getting into the river but we don't know if any would have got in," said Ivany. "We contacted the Ministry of
Environment in Cranbrook and Environment Canada and they determined that a clean up was necessary so a clean up contractor came and took away around 4,000 litres of contaminated water to remove the affluent." The contractor attempted to flush the storm drains and skim the diesel off the surface of the water. Ivany said it is not possible to estimate how much diesel was spilled, but it is likely some would still be left behind. "It's not possible to get it all out," he said. "It will have soaked into the vegetation and will come out over time. The Ministry of Environment were still on site this week follow-
ing up and will be handling an investigation into what happened. The company delivering the diesel did not report any spill. Tomlinson said he believed the spill to be around 20 litres and that it is not necessary to report spills less than 100 litres. "We are going to upgrade our cameras and ensure that in future drivers are trained in our procedures," he said. "We are sick to our stomachs that this happened. Spilling fuel into a duck pond is bad, however small it is, and it reflects poorly on us as a business. "This has been our worst week in a long time."

Celebrating Kootenay women writers Submitted
B
eyond the Batholith, is an innovative series of abstract portraits, celebrating the creative achievements of 12 Kootenay women, all writers, by a talented Kaslo art-
ist, Arin Fay. This is a unique and revealing glimpse of our literary artists, through the eyes of a visual artist. To fully embrace the spirit of the project Fay developed a tour to bring the portraits and authors to Columbia Basin communities.
Securing grants from the Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance and the Columbia Basin Trust she has worked with local libraries, through the Kootenay Library Federation, to realize this ambitious project. The portraits will
be hanging at the Sparwood Public Library and the Elkford Public Library during the month of April. You can view the portraits at the Sparwood Public Library from Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m, except Tuesday

erious and not-so-serious athletes enjoyed a spring day for the Raging Elk Powder, Pedal, Paddle, held
at Fernie Alpine Resort on Saturday. As always, there were lots of fun costumes and plenty of smiles on the faces of competitors taking part in the fun 18 km
relay race. The teams and solo competitors skied, cycled, kayaked and ran their way along the course, with great support from spectators.
The Big Bangers won best costume.

ine community groups are looking for votes from East Kootenay Community Credit Union members this weekend, as they compete for funding in the 2012 Community Awards. The program provides funding to local projects that are deemed most deserving by EKC’s members, who vote by going into the Fernie, Elkford or Sparwood branches this week. This year $12,500 in awards will be available in each Elk Valley community of Elkford, Fernie, and for the first time, Sparwood. An additional $12,500 from Sparwood Community Futures will be added to Sparwood with their winner receiving $25,000. “On behalf of the East Kootenay Community Credit Union, I’d like to thank all the Community Award applicants from throughout the Elk Valley Region, says Sparwood branch manager Eric Johnstone. “This program is special because the recipients of the $12,500 awards in each community will be chosen by EKC’s members. Elkford branch manager Cindy Hesje added: “All EKC members, including those from Cranbrook, can vote at these three Elk Valley branches.
“We are excited about the difference these community awards make. In addition to financial assistance, EKC can provide information and mentorship and can help to spread the word about inspiring community initiatives, like the many projects proposed by these community award finalists.â€? Letters to the Editor
by Angela Treharne
This week I have found myself the proud owner of two dogs. It’s only a temporary thing – I am looking after them while my friends, their real owners, are gorging themselves on pizza and gelato in Italy. I was nervous about it – I’ve never had to be responsible for any living creature other than myself, but now I understand why all my dog owning friends become so obsessed with their pets – they take over their lives. My whole day is planned around making sure they are walked, fed, and content. I have to get up half an hour earlier than I used to so I can walk them before I leave for the day, and won’t come home to a surprise “gift from one of them in the kitchen. But now I also understand why my friends go on and on about the need for an off leash dog park. These guys need to run. Keeping them on a leash just isn’t going to ensure they have ran off enough excess energy and won’t tear apart my friends’ beautiful house. Fernie Pets Society are in the running for an East Kootenay Community Credit Union grant to fund a fenced, year-round, 2.5 acre off-leash park at Fernie Aquatic Centre. This would ensure that dog owners have a place to let their furry friends run free, and means that those who don’t share in dog owners’ enthusiasm for their four legged friends, won’t have to put up with being sniffed and licked to death when they are trying to enjoy a peaceful evening stroll along the river. It means dogs can run and play together and won’t run off. There are even plans for the park to include an obstacle course in the future – Disney World for Fernie dogs! Of course, the dog park is not the only worthy community group hoping to win votes and win the community award, it’s just the one that I personally am seeing the need for this week, as a temporary dog owner. But all the finalists, in Fernie, Elkford and Sparwood, would be very deserving of the community award, and all the projects would be great for the towns they are in. If you are an East Kootenay Community Credit Union member, make sure you have your say in where the money goes! Go into your local branch and vote for the community group you feel is most deserving. Whether you are a pet owner, a golfer, a parent, or an archery fanatic, you will find a project to put your vote behind.
HST is taxing for who? Why are conservative governments like the B.C. Liberals so infatuated with the HST? Bill Bennett has been throwing numbers around in paid statements in local papers every week since June 23 and then in his letter to the Creston Valley Advance supporting the HST with more numbers he said the Nelson Creston area “is unrepresented by a government MLA. His next sentence begins, “The government of B.C. of which I am a member. That’s an interesting concept. If the B.C. Liberals do not consider Michelle Mungall or any other NDP MLA to be a Member of the Government of B.C. while Bill Bennett emphasizes that he is a member, then just how is Bill trying to define Provincial Government for us, what does he think non B.C. Liberals sitting in the Legislative Assembly are, and
what will he think he is when he is sitting with the Official Opposition? Let’s return to the first question. Why is the HST so important? One of Shakespeare’s characters said, “Methinks the man doth protest too much. And it seems to me the rhetoric, numbers and amendments being made in order to sell the HST are also too much and must be in the range of the 1.5 billion dollars they say we will lose going back to the PST and GST. The loss could be regained by taxing the wealthy and corporations. After all, by now, almost everyone must know there is no trickle down effect, just an increasing gap and B.C. debt. I can’t believe the rebates and subsidies to single parents and other low income earners comes anywhere near the increase in consumer tax being paid by families with two substantial incomes when the HST is at the intended 12 per cent or
even the promised 10 per cent on July 1, 2014, which is a bird in the bush not in the hand, especially considering the economic woes forcast for the near future. Not taxing the wealthy is one cause of Greece’s economic woes and the conservative politicians in the U.S.A. are willing to create a global economic meltdown rather than tax the wealthy and here in B.C. the HST is our way of going down the same path. Is that why it is so important to Christy Clark and the B.C. Liberals? If the wage slaves pay all the taxes, especially consumer taxes, and conservative governments work to cut services, wages and benefits, who will buy all the toys with planned obsolescence that need to be sold to keep the economy strong? Credit cards have their limits. Peter Ross Creston
Concern for wildlife
If a six foot high fence is installed on each side of the track within town I would be concerned for the wildlife that would be affected. It seems that the wildlife would not be able to cross on their current natural or territorial trails. In addition it may increase human wildlife negative encounters as the animals would not be able to cross freely. They would be limited in the direction they could travel when human encounters happen in that area. Let alone getting possibly routed in between the two fences for train and wildlife encounters and fatalities. Mark Ehmann Fernie

Do you remember when you were young, playing a game of Tag in the playground? Remember how much fun that was? At least it was fun until the playground bully decided to make up rules on the fly. Rules that only applied to him, like calling “time-out” just before you were about to tag him. Funny thing was when you tried to invoke the rule to your advantage, it didn’t count. Frustrating, juvenile, unfair, bullying. Bill 22, also known as the “Education Improvement Act”, which was implemented by the British Columbia Liberal Government this March, removes the civil right of B.C. teachers to negotiate a new contract. It threatens to punish teachers and their union for taking job action in order to gain leverage in negotiations, something that has been done by unions, legally, for years. All the teachers want is a fair and just settlement, however, taking job action in the form of strike as a means to gain this fair and just settlement is now illegal. Bill 22 also makes a lockout
of any other union in British Columbia (or in Canada for that matter)? After all, according to the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, “Every individual is equal before and under the law and has the right to the equal protection and equal benefit of the law without discrimination...” What is next? Will Bill 22. state that teachers must surrender their bus seats to non-teachers, or that teachers cannot marry each other? Extreme examples, I know, but in principle, what is the difference? In a world where bullying is condoned, and civil rights are ignored, I am sure that Bill 22 would also be tolerated, but these trails were blazed years ago. In essence, Bill 22 is spitting in the face of those that worked so hard and sacrificed so much to give us the freedoms that we sometimes take for granted. Regardless of whose side you stand on in this labour dispute, or if you have a side at all, you have to admit that Bill 22, at its very core, is a step backwards for British Columbia, Canada, and Civil Rights as a whole. Welcome to your future.
of the teachers by the government illegal. However, why would the B.C. government lock out the teachers when Bill 22 and the net-zero mandate work hand-in-hand to give the government all of the negotiation leverage they need. If you can’t negotiate, legislate, right? It is like the playground bully saying, “I can tag you, but you can’t tag me.” We promote anti-bullying in schools, while we look to our elected officials for leadership by example. However, if our elected officials are the ones doing the bullying, then what example, exactly, are they leading by? I guess bullying is OK after all. Bill 22, beyond all of its confusing lawyer-esque banter, is one thing: A violation of simple civil rights. Bill 22 takes away from teachers the simple, common rights that are afforded to all of us on a day-to-day basis. It is in contrast to the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms: The freedom of expression, the freedom to hold peaceful assembly, and the freedom of equality are all violated by Bill 22. For example, how is it that the members of the British Columbia Teacher’s Federation (BCTF) are treated differently than the members

Cops seize $300,000 in pot April, 1997 By Amy Steele Free Press Reporter
T
he old mining area of Morrisey has made the news for the first time in years after the Fernie RCMP found a collection of marijuana plants estimated to be worth $300,000 in the upstairs of a rental home. After obtaining a search warrant, police seized 138 marijuana plants, growing paraphernalia, a sizeable amount of cash and four unsecured fire-
arms from the rental home. Richard Raoul Begin, 41, has been charged with cultivation of marijuana. Corporal Jerry Dehmke said Begin was released from custody after promising to appear in court on May 27 to enter a plea. Dehmke said the grow operation was obviously a commercial venture with the potential to create four similar “crops” per calendar year. Police are continuing their investigation and further charges may result said Dehmke.

Street Sweeping Schedule – 2012 The City of Fernie has begun their spring cleaning. Each year the City of Fernie cleans sand and debris from our City Streets. The work done by the crews helps prevent the material from going into our storm sewer system, reduces dust and makes the streets safer for cyclists, pedestrian and motorists. Many residents have the convenience of a driveway or back lane to park their vehicles during street sweeping. During neighbourhood sweeps, residents are asked to remove their parked vehicles from the streets. For residents without these conveniences, it may be necessary to park a distance away from your home until the sweeper has cleaned in front of your property. The following is the schedule for areas of town to be completed. • • • • •

Legion Mural At the Regular Meeting of February 20, 2012 Council received a letter from the Royal Canadian Legion concerning the condition of the Legion mural in Centennial Square. During the branding process in 2010 the Branding Committee decided that the current murals in Sparwood are a feature of interest, however they lack consistency and continuity with most other facets of Sparwood’s new brand. In May of 2010 Council adopted a recommendation from the Branding Committee to discontinue the focus on the murals and let them retreat organically.
Development Permit – 100 Aspen Drive Council approved a revision to a Development Permit granted to Mountain View Mobile Home Park on February 20, 2012. This new trail will provide access for pedestrians to connect to municipal trails under Highway 43, without having to cross the busy intersection at Aspen Drive and Highway 43.

Goldstar is Cleaning for a Reason Elk Valley Cancer patients offered free cleaning from Elk Valley company By Rebecca Edwards Contributor

omen undergoing cancer treatment are being offered free house cleaning during the course of their treatment through the Cleaning for a Reason Foundation. Goldstar Cleaning Services is only the second cleaning company in B.C. to join the not-for-profit foundation, and the first outside the Lower Mainland. This week is Cleaning for a Reason Week in Canada and the United States and the Fernie and Sparwood-based company has committed to giving two women from the V0B postal code area a clean of their home once a month for four months. Owner Jill Barclay said she was inspired to join the foundation by a former client, who was undergoing cancer treatment.
“She put together a team of people to help her get through it – one of the things she needed was to have the house cleaned so she could focus on the treatment. “It got me thinking, and I found out about the foundation, which was formed in Texas in 2006 and has now helped over 9,000 women across the United States and Canada.” Cancer patients currently undergoing treatment apply directly to the Cleaning For a Reason foundation who will take them through a short eligibility process and connect them with the nearest cleaning company who provides the service for free. Jill added: “Typically women are the ones who are responsible for most of the house cleaning – I thought this is one way we can help out so they have more time to spend with
their family and friends, or to rest. “We can do whatever they want us to do, but typically it would be a 4-6 hour clean including dusting, vacuuming, cleaning the kitchen and bathrooms. “We will also be sensitive to the needs of the patient and their family in terms of scheduling a time that suits them, they don’t need to leave the house while we are there and we work in complete confidentiality – it will be the same cleaner every time. “I hope it will give our clients one less thing to think about, so they can conserve their energy to deal with the treatment.” • Women currently undergoing cancer treatment who would like to access Goldstar’s services should apply directly to the Cleaning for a Reason Foundation at www.cleaningforareason.org

Deer Count The Urban Deer Management Advisory Committee conducted a second deer count on February 21st from 4:00 – 5:00 p.m. The Deer Count indicated that there is a reduction in deer since the previous count in October 2011, as only 4.5 deer per square km were counted (compared to 12.875 per square km). The Urban Deer Management Committee is aware that various factors may have contributed to inaccuracies in the count. Three counts will be conducted in total as a way of determining a consistent and accurate number – with the third and final count occurring on April 16th, beginning at 6:00 p.m. Temporary

ith what may have been the big-
gest crowd of kids yet, the annual Easter egg hunt at Sparwood Overwaitea was a huge hit. This tradition has taken place for almost 20 years, and is known for its intensity and fun. Approximately 150 pounds of little chocolate eggs and other treats were scat-
tered throughout Greenwood Mall. At 1 p.m. as the glass doors opened the kids took off running, clearing the mall of all the candies in under five minutes. "We know that kids look forward to the Easter Egg Hunt every year," says Stan Schmidt, Overwaitea
Foods Manager." We really enjoy putting this event on and would like to thank all the kids and parents for attending," he says. During the afternoon event there was face painting, and a hotdog fundraiser for the Children's Hospital.
Kids wait in anticipation for the doors to open and the Easter egg hunt to begin.

A One Woman Musical performance By Angela Treharne Free Press Staff
S
tep aboard and back in time with Iron Mountain Theatre's production of White Star Lady: The Story of Violet Jessop. White Star Lady is a onewoman musical about the life and adventures of Ms. Violet Jessop. A stewardess aboard ocean liners for 42 years, her experiences at sea are unequalled by anyone in her position. The majority of her years were spent working for the White Star Line, and she was aboard all three of the ill-fated sister ships: RMS Olympic, RMS Titanic, and HMHS Britannic.
Making her truly the 'unsinkable Violet Jessop.’ The personal stories of these incidents, as well as a thoroughly researched account of the life and character of Violet Jessop, are all documented in this unique and engaging musical production. Set to the beautiful score composed by Nadine Tremblay, performer Jane Gaudet brings to life 11 different characters in this marathon of seemless transitions from scene to song. Meet characters like the enthusiastic 12 year old William Brown, just a young cabin boy working aboard ships, or Ms. Priss, one of Violet's first class passengers and her exact-
itude of demands. 2012 will mark the sinking of Titanic, join us for this glimpse of what life was like for both women and crew to be working aboard shipping liners at the turn of the century. Jane Gaudet has worked in professional musical theatre for the last eight years. An honours graduate of the Canadian College of Performing Arts (CCPA), she co-founded her own production company Gotta Getta Gimmick in Victoria. After touring North America for three years with The Story Theatre company, Jane worked for The Belfry Theatre, Kaleidoscope Theatre, and The
Okanagan Stage. It was through her work at The Royal British Columbia Museum's Titanic Artifact Exhibit that she discovered and fell in love with Violet Jessop's amazing story. After portraying the character at the exhibit, Jane began work on the script and states that the entire process of producing her own show has been quite literally “a dream come true”. She hopes that others will be as inspired by this miraculous woman's life. White Star Lady will be performed at 8 p.m. on April 12 at The Arts Station. satility from being a self-taught multi-instrumentalist adds a multi-faceted essence to his songwriting. His voice harkens to the sound of edgy Americana and the storied history of the past starting from 40 years ago. His latest album, Nothing to Lose But the Blues, has echoes of early Bob Dylan protest songs, elements of a bluegrass album with storytelling and performances on a number of bluegrass instruments
and, ultimately, is a blues album that made use of Rambling Dan’s edgy singing and blues prowess. Frechette’s ability to infuse elements from such a plethora of different instruments, genres, and generations allows him to impress and entertain people from all walks of life. Everyone who listens becomes a fan of Dan. Frechette himself says, “I’m only ever as good as the connection I have with the audience.”

Getting ready for Fernival fun this weekend ernie Alpine Resort is once again hosting Fernival to celebrate the end of another epic winter season. This year’s fun will include entertainment from April Wine, Canadian music icons with a career spanning over 40 successful years. The band started out in Nova Scotia late in 1969. The Henman brothers, David and Ritchie, got together with their cousin Jim Henman and fellow musician Myles Goodwyn to form a band called April Wine, a name chosen simply because they were two words that sounded good together. Fifteen studio albums, three live releases, numerous compilations, a boxed set and thousands of concerts later,

are well aware, the East Kootenay is home to some of the most spectacular landscapes anywhere on the planet. These landscapes house an intricate web of flora and fauna that form multiple interconnected ecosystems, from the world renowned Columbia Wetlands to the spectacular grasslands of the Rocky Mountain Trench to the old growth forests of the Elk Valley, these diverse ecosystems have evolved over millennia and provide this region with a strong economic and cultural backbone. The East Kootenay Invasive Plant Council (EKIPC) will be exploring this and other ideas related to “Our Changing Ecosystems” at our Annual Speaker Series and AGM on April 17 at the Prestige Inn in Cranbrook. Flash mobs and retro neon ski suits By Angela Treharne Free Press Staff
N
o need for any hot tub time machine, skiers and snowboarders in Fernie turned the town and resort into a sea of retro 80s wear Wednesday last week at the annual Hot Dog Day. Despite the rain, skiers and riders took part in the fun on the hill and then a flash mob entertained those enjoying a little apres ski in the plaza afterwards. Vitality Body and Mind organised a group of almost 50 dancers to take part in the flash mob which lasted for a few minutes. A flash mob is a term coined nine years ago for a group of people who assemble suddenly in a public place, perform an unusual and seemingly pointless act for a brief time, then disperse.
The flash mob spring into dancing action.

Fernie Martial Arts wins swords
I Hear Humming ginal and then it’s all good all over again. Drop in Bear Chutes, drop in Knot Chutes, drop in anywhere. This is the time of year I pull out my touring skis and think about making a couple of long treks. Find a hut no one has thought of and make a reservation. The ski in will be warm with our turtleneck sleeves pushed up. On the deck of the hut (always south facing) the end of the day turns into tales of old ski trips, Haute Route trips, early season climbs ending in disaster with fast moving weather, or becoming classics with an unexpected weather window. The meat of the day lies in lap after lap on fine corn sow. No breaking trail. Simply gliding over the surface up and down. And it’s all good. If you are hanging your skis up, take a few minutes to prep for next year. Put a piece of tape in front of the toe on one ski, write down the DIN setting for your bindings and then back the springs off all the way for the summer. Wax your skis with a thick coat of red and don’t scrape them to prevent oxidation over the summer. Leave them in a corner sitting on their tails, not hanging from their tips in a ski rack for the summer. For your boots, sprinkle some baby powder or foot powder into your boots and buckle them loosely with the tongue in place for the summer. Last, check the pressure in your mountain bike tires, oil your chain and get ‘er ready to rip. The South Country is in great shape right now. This morning when I walked out my door in the pre-dawn light, I heard robins singing in from the trees across the street. This is spring.

Fernie Martial arts would like to congratulate all its competitors who all placed, winning Samurai Swords as prizes instead of trophies. The club won a total of over 30 swords including point fighting and continuous fighting divisions. Even though Fernie Martial Arts has only been operating since November they were able to compete with fighters who have been training for several years. Ruth Ann Juneau, 8, was very impressive on the day, taking the provincial title in continuous fighting and also a second in point fighting in the under 30kg division beating a seasoned competitor in the final who was aged 10 and who has been competing for several years. Also Emmanuel Juneau, Ronan La Fortune and Declan la Fortune all placed in the Provincial categories, at the same time taking home several swords in the intermediate sections. Also in the beginner sections, first time competitors Zeth Ellis, Mikayla Clifford, Maria Juneau and Jonah Juneau all made it to the finals of the beginner fighting categories.
Ruth Ann Juneau Ruth took the provincial title in continuous fighting and also a second in point fighting at the WKC Southern BC Provincial Open Championship.

or some, it’s been a winter of great skiing. For others, it can’t be over soon enough. The conditions across North America have been variable to say the least. The other night a couple of us were talking about this winter. There have been epic days of 40, even 50 and a couple of 90 cm days. We woke to some of the best days of the past 10 winters. At the same time, the eastern resorts suffered through one of the warmest winters in recent memory and a paucity of snow struck many of our favourite areas in the States. I love spring skiing. Skiing with a shell, a light toque and a beer on the deck of the Griz or the Corner Pocket at the end of the day. There’s no reason to be on the hill early. A 10 or 11 a.m. start is perfect. The snow softens and corns up on the east and south facing pitches. As the day progresses, as the snow becomes too soft, you move to more north facing slopes. Easter Bowl remains great all day. The months of March and April are huge snow months. Up high there is little consolidation in the snow pack. It simply keeps building and building. The day of a storm will be great. A couple days after, the off piste remains mar-

he shops of historic downtown know there is only one name in the business of authentic and quality woodwork repairs in the Elk Valley: River City Woodworks. Originating in 1989, building houses around Fernie and the snowfields, owner Willard Ripley streamlined the business in 2000 to focus on specialty woodwork. Adorning the fronts of the United Church,
the Vogue Theatre, Ski Base, the Fernie Museum, the Fernie Tea and Coffee House, the General Store and Livery, River City’s doors contribute to the look and feel of Fernie’s turn of the century architecture. “What we produce is customised and unique, says Willard. “For the doors of Second Avenue, this means sturdy solid wood doors, aged to match the aesthetic of the neighbourhood. Hailing from New Brunswick, Willard fell in love with Fernie in the late 1980s. A long-

time skier and recent graduate from Art and Design school, Willard says, “I needed to find a way to stay here. The formation of River City Woodworks seemed a logical step. Brad Graystock, River City’s architectural technologist, is responsible for the historical accuracy of the doors of Second Avenue. “We use magazines and books and even catalogues from old mill houses, says Brad. “We search for and collect any image that can inform the design and look of our doors. However, the skilled journeymen carpenters of River City have designed and created a host of additional products. “We’ve made pony walls, coffered ceilings, built-in cabinets. We have even carved ornate beer pulls. If it’s made from wood, we can make it! By focusing on tradition, experience,

craftsmanship and expertise, River City has created a niche in quality woodworks. “Our products are of high demand, particularly in ranch homes and acreages, says Willard. “In 2008 we opened a show room in Calgary. But all our production and design remains in Fernie. Our business model is lifestyle oriented, and centres around Fernie. With a staff of 15, we are too big to rely on the Elk Valley for commissions. Instead, we create things here that we can sell elsewhere. The reputation for customisation and quality of their products is such that clients as far away as Japan order products through River City Woodworks. “The quality of our woodwork is such that the doors could outlast the buildings, says Willard. “As long as they are protected from the rain and snow, there is no reason our doors couldn’t last 100 years, or more. Architectural features such as alcoves and protective overhangs are a common feature of older buildings, particularly in the Elk Valley. In addition, Willard claims his products are environmentally friendly, as they are often formed from reclaimed wood, and require relatively little energy to produce. “Our creations are not only good for you, they’re good for the earth too.

T
he second annual Joe Pires Memorial Tournament will be taking place on May 12 at the Sparwood Recreation Centre. The tournament will feature 12 teams playing games of three on three ball hockey as well as an evening cabaret afterwards. This event is dedicated to the memory of long time Sparwood Resident Joe Pires who lost his battle with cancer in December 2011. This event gathers family, friends and community members in an effort to raise awareness for cancer as well as honour a great man through sport and entertainment. The ball hockey tour-
nament consists of rosters of 7-10 players, with registration starting at 9:30 a.m. on the 12th. The Cabaret will begin at 9 p.m. in the Sparwood Curling Rink. This annual event looks to capitalize on a successful first year which raised over $9,200 for the Canadian Cancer Society. The event has grown from eight to 12 teams in only a year. This event is open to the public who are encouraged to come, watch entertaining hockey, partici-
pate in a prize raffle and enjoy the cabaret. All tournament information can be found on the Joe Pires Memorial Tournament Facebook page or by emailing joepires@ hotmail.ca.
The Joe Pires Memorial Tournament, established in 2011, aims to raise money and awareness for the prevention of cancer. All proceeds of the event will be donated to the Canadian Cancer Society in an effort to prevent this disease. Friends, family and members of the public gathered together to honour Joe Pires and raise money and awareness for cancer. Submitted photo

GARLOCK (Nee: Vause): It is with our deepest sorrow to announce the passing of 63 years old Elnore Grace Garlock who passed away at the Elk Valley Hospital on April 1, 2012. She was predeceased by her father Jim Vause in 1992. Elnore is survived by her husband Lloyd Garlock, son Richard (Kim) Garlock, Lana (Roy) Garlock, grandchildren; Brandon (Raven) Garlock, Brett Garlock (Kellie Baker), Dalton Garlock, Alisha Garlock, Dillian Sarabun, Colin Sarabun and great grandchild Mikaela Garlock, sister Linda (Mike) Kowal of High Level Alberta, brother Ken (Loretta) Vause of Dawson Creek, mother Dorothy Vause of Fort St. John BC, many cousins, nieces and nephews and great friends. A wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend, Elnore will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered as the glue that held the family together, but most importantly, a person with a heart of gold who fought one hell of a battle and touched so many hearts, truly an inspiration to all who knew her. Married to her sweetheart Lloyd Garlock on April 15, 1967, Elnore’s life revolved around her family and friends. Elnore also loved to sew, quilt, play cards, go quading, ďŹ shing, camping, hunting, gardening and visiting with her grandchildren and great grandchild. She also enjoyed sewing/knitting things for her husband, children, grandchildren and great grandchild. She was especially proud of her grandchildren that went on to college to receive their diplomas as well as those who are pursuing their diplomas; nothing could make her more proud. Let’s not and say we did. A special thank you goes out to Dr. Gray and all the nursing staff who took great care and support in our time of need. In lieu of owers donations can be made to the BC Cancer Society or the Rose Lodge Guesthouse, 2251 – 32 Street South, Lethbridge, AB. No funeral services will be held presently, a gathering will be announced at a later date. Arrangements entrusted to Cherished Memories Funeral Services Ltd.

You may be just a little slower off the mark so far this month, but the pace will accelerate this week. Your focus will sharpen noticeably and by next week you will be on a real roll. With growing responsibilities to consider you may feel the urge to break loose! Fortunately, opportunities to do so are here now and will continue.

Gestating dreams will begin to show their first real shoots this week. Already a variety of ideas are crowding your plans. Your mind is open and your imagination is soaring. You are ready to dive into the game again and you likely have support from others. Proceed with a beginners mind for best results.
GEMINI (MAY 21 – JUN 21) Some unexpected new beginnings are having an accelerating effect. Yet, to move forward as freely as you would like, you may have to do some clearing close to home. The time is right to clear the clutter, in your thoughts, focus and/or living space. Feeling confident has probably been more challenging than usual but that will change soon so be ready.
CANCER (JUN 21 – JUL 22) Something powerful and perhaps unexpected has sparked in your world. Whether this is the kind of change you want is another story. Yet, what can you do but to cooperate with the current? You can list your options, and your blessings for added good measure. Be willing to see the bigger picture to provide context for what is happening.
LEO (JUL 22 – AUG 23)
The time is right to be taking the initiative. This will require a creative approach and perhaps some courage. Do outline your ambitions to fuel your determination. It remains a good idea to do your homework which includes research and requires imaginative thinking. Be open to inspiration, support and nurturing from others. Network!
VIRGO (AUG 23 – SEP 22) A rather deep and complex time continues. Yet, it will shift later this week to produce more confidence and enthusiasm. Acquiring new tools, techniques and strategies remains important. Both learning and ‘getting the word out there’ are implied. Your ability to concentrate on these will increase steadily as well
LIBRA (SEP 22 – OCT 22) Changes on relationship fronts have been sparked and these are evident. They may also be pushing you within, to do inner work and confront the doubt demons. Yet, there is at least a silver lining in these events and possibly even a vein of gold. Make efforts to trust what is happening. Cooperate and capitalize!
SCORPIO (OCT 22 – NOV 21)
:
ess A cold web offset printing proc which creates no emissions 100% canola based inks
Creating a healthier rhythm and flow continues. It may feel quite challenging to feel solid and secure with how things are, however. This may take another six months to settle. Yet, there is also expansion and opportunity is knocking. Take full advantage of what is available and be patient with and trusting of the shifting ground.
SAGITTARIUS (NOV 21 – DEC 21)
The waves of change are being felt by everyone and not least of all you. Feeling confident about it all may not be so easy. Reaching out to others for support, exchange and new alliances is ideal. Be willing to be still and quiet, to receive guidance from within. Opportunity accompanies change; summon the pioneering spirit!
CAPRICORN (DEC 21 – JAN 19) Something deep within the core of your being has been sparked. Perhaps you need space to integrate what is happening and/or it is activating you to be freer. Your imagination is likely reeling from it all. Connecting within to consult your inner authority for what to do is a good idea. Others may offer useful guidance or insights as well.

Many new perceptions have taken root in your mind. Your sights are set on the future and you may increasingly know what you do not want. What you do want may require some additional time to clarify. Yet your ambitions for something new are growing and this will continue. All you have to do now is be open and willing.
PISCES (FEB 19 – MAR 20)
Taking the initiative to establish a more reliable path and rhythm has been keeping you busy. Dealing with opposition both within and without has been the real challenge. Your focus will increase this week and this will activate your drive. You have perhaps been trying to cover a lot of ground leaving you feeling stressed. Acknowledge yourself and persevere.

21-year-old Crowsnest Pass man was killed Monday after two motocross bikes crashed head-on near Lake Koocanusa. At around 4:15 p.m., Elk Valley RCMP officers responded to the
crash about 75 km southwest of Fernie. One of the riders died at the scene. He was with a group of individuals from Alberta riding on some backcountry trails in the area. The RCMP say both riders were
heading up opposite sides of the same hill and crashed when they reached the top. They were all experienced motocross riders and were wearing protective riding gear, the RCMP added. “The police have ruled out foul
play and will continue to work in assisting the British Columbia Coroners Service with their investigation,” said Sgt. Dave Dubnyk from the Elk Valley RCMP. The name of the victim has not been released as family are being notified.
