Seniors need to work together for better health

Dental health care is a growing need among British Columbia’s aging population to prevent pain, infection, tooth loss and negative effects on general health and quality of life. Older adults are increasingly reliant on others to maintain a healthy mouth. Declining dexterity, eyesight and cognitive abilities along with an increase in medications or foods and drinks that contain sugars, result in seniors being more susceptible to dental health issues which can progress rapidly without proper care. “Unfortunately, many frail elders are not able to care for their mouths properly, says Dr. Hank Klein, B.C. Dental Association (BCDA) president. Family members and care providers have an important role to play in daily mouth care`, he adds. Dentists and their staff have an important role to play in disease prevention, through regular examinations to diagnose problems early and professional cleanings. All of these elements result in better health outcomes for seniors.” The BCDA offers the following tips for seniors’ caregivers: • Brush natural teeth at least twice a day, preferably after breakfast and especially before bed or long naps. Electric or adapted toothbrushes can help seniors with reduced dexterity, while a reminder to brush can help those with cognitive issues. Always encourage a senior to brush his or her own teeth and provide assistance as needed. • Floss daily (before bed) to remove food and debris between teeth. A floss holder or an interproximal brush can help. • Remove dentures from the mouth and clean daily using a soft toothbrush or denture brush and a liquid soap. Brush over a towel to prevent damage if dropped. Gently brush the gums and tongue with a soft toothbrush moistened with water. The B.C. Liberal government has been working since last spring on its participation in federal hearings on the Northern Gateway pipeline proposed to run from Northern Alberta to Kitimat. Victoria has released a stack of documents in response to a freedom of information request from an unnamed “interest group” that details B.C. Liberals efforts since last summer to set up a technical review of the proposal by Enbridge Inc., now undergoing environmental hearings by a federal Joint Review Panel. Options and recommendations for the B.C. government were blanked out before the documents were released because

However, Lake told CBC Radio last week his government has not taken a position for or against the pipeline, and is participating in hearings to get the technical details first. The environment ministry issued this statement: “Our government has chosen

to participate as an intervenor because it gives us direct access to information, the proponent, government participants and other intervenors rather than having to go through the panel. “We also have the ability to withdraw or change our status as an intervenor to a government participant at any time through the process by providing written notice to the Joint Review Panel.” The Northern Gateway proposal is for a pair of pipelines extending 1,170 kilometres across B.C. north of Prince George. They would pass near Vanderhoof, Fort St. James, Burns Lake, Houston and Terrace, feeding a new crude oil tanker

Local author Bill Gallaher of Deka Lake will be launching his novel, The Horseman’s Last Call, at Nuthatch Books on April 20 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Horseman’s Last Call is the third and final volume in the Wild Jack Strong trilogy, which began with The Frog Lake Massacre, followed by The Luck of the Horseman. The latest book presents the closing chapters in the life of Wild Jack Strong. The story opens at the start of the 20th century with Jack content on the ranch he had always dreamed of, with a loving wife and an adopted son. Things take an unwanted turn when war breaks out in Europe and Jack once more feels the need to heed his country’s call. “My books are based in historical facts and involve real characters, but I inserted the fic-

“This is the first time I’ve done a trilogy, originally this was submitted as a 750-word novel.” The book was too big for TouchWood Editions, Gallaher says, adding they specialize in smaller publications. Writing the trilogy presented its challenges, he says, since each section has to be complete in itself and yet lead into the next book.

Gallaher is also an accomplished singer and songwriter and has travelled across Canada and into the United States. Writing songs led him to writing books, he says, adding that a ballad he wrote would make a good book. “I thought someone could make a good story out of the ballad. That someone became me.”

Cariboo Fire Centre personnel responded to six human-caused wildfires April 6-9, says Jenny Fremlin, Cariboo Fire Centre (CNC) fire information officer. The fires ranged from spot fires to 10 hectares in size, she adds, and all six fires are in the mop-up stage or patrol stage at this time. The specific causes of the fires are under investigation. People are reminded an open-fire prohibition is in effect throughout the CFC region. “Anyone found in contravention of an open-fire prohibition may be issued a $345 ticket, or if convicted in court, may be fined up to $100,000 and sentenced to one year in jail. If the contravention causes or contributes to a

wildfire, the person may be subject to a penalty of up to $10,000 and be ordered to pay all firefighting and associated costs.” To report a wildfire or unattended campfire, folks can call *5555 on their cell phones or call toll-free 1-800-6635555. Healthy forests equal healthy communities By Bill Bourgeois In 2009 and through 2010, a growing concern was voiced among professional foresters and biologists, conservationists, academics, community leaders, forest industry support companies and First Nations that British Columbia forests are in need of greater attention to meet societal expectations over the long-term. This concern generated the Healthy Forests-Healthy Communities: A conversation on BC forests (HFHC), a non-partisan, volunteer supported initiative to provide an opportunity for experts, communities and concerned citizens to inform decision-makers (government and/ or forest industry) of their views and concerns regarding management of B.C. forests. The results from 28 expert papers on current and future forest management, 20 community dialogue sessions (including one in 100 Mile House) identifying community issues and suggested actions concluded: • Communities, experts and professionals are concerned about the future of B.C. forest lands. • The concerns are shared by a wide range of stakeholders and First Nations across the province, including a move away from a current short-term forest industry economic focus to long-term stewardship practices directed at meeting community needs. • Community issues are consistent throughout B.C. and communities want: • More influence on local forest lands decisions. • More information on the status of local forest lands. • More diverse economic development opportunities from forest lands.

• More sustainable integrated resource management. • Better monitoring and assessment of forest lands management. • A high level of stewardship on private forest lands. • A forest lands vision and an evaluation framework are required to guide forest management related legislation, regulation, policies, practices and plans. • Experts are of the opinion that more needs to be done in forest management to achieve the draft B.C. forest lands vision and deliver on the needs of communities over the long-term. • Innovative solutions to 12 key challenges arising from the expert opinions are needed. It is recommended: 1) Political parties engage in dialogue with communities and concerned citizens regarding community and fam-

ily long-term needs. 2) Government adopts the requirement for a forest lands vision to guide legislation, regulation and policy. 3) Government reviews the legislation, regulation and policies to be consistent with the focus on long-term forest lands stewardship to meet the forest lands vision. 4) Decision-makers adopt the key messages and challenges identified though the HFHC. 5) Decision-makers establish opportunities to bring together people to generate innovative actions to address issues and

challenges. 6) Communities identify initiatives to assist in providing clarity regarding what is needed from local-regional forest lands and mechanisms to become more involved in forest management decisions. 7) Professional associations and academia consider development of a program to provide capacity-building assistance to communities. Province battles smoking and salt consumption Black Press

British Columbia’s program to supply free quit-smoking aids is proving popular, with more than 63,000 smokers taking advantage since it launched last September. The program offers up to 12 weeks worth of nicotine patches or gum, available once per calendar year to people with active Medical Services Plan coverage. Those who used the program in 2011 are eligible again for 2012. Two prescription drugs, Champix and Zyban, are also available with costs for 12 weeks, covered for some people under the Pharmacare plan. People can register by calling HealthLink BC at 8-1-1. B.C. has the lowest smoking rate in Canada, but the health ministry estimates there are still 550,000 smokers in the province. More than 6,000 B.C. residents die each year from smoking-related illness, costing an estimated $605 million in direct health-care costs. With health care costs taking up more than 40 per cent of the B.C. budget and cost pressures increas-

Resources for families and individuals at risk in the South Cariboo are offered in several communitybased social service programs provided by Axis Family Resources Ltd. Rick and Maureen Gibson began the twoperson business 20 years ago in Williams Lake, where its head office remains today. It has since blossomed into a company with 360 employees across the British Columbia Interior. Donna White works in the Caregiver Support Program for Axis Family Resources in 100 Mile House, and says there are various other programs offered locally. “Being a new comer to the Cariboo myself, I see Axis as offering similar programs to what the services on the Lower Mainland would do. We address the needs of people who are considered more vulnerable.” Whether those

challenges are mental, physical, emotional or related to care giving, White notes many families are at risk somehow and in need of support. These include youth support, social workers, addiction services, parent and foster parent support and a supportive living program for assisting people with life skills. Linda Lindberg has worked with Axis locally for more than six years, and currently works in the Children Who Witness Abuse Program. She says anoth-

er Axis outreach program helps with women living in abusive relationships under the provincial Stopping the Violence program. The Ministry of Children and Family Development refers many of its clients, Lindberg explains. A $4,800 funding influx for her related Violence is Preventable (VIP) program was recently announced from the Civil Forfeiture Grants. This money will facilitate Lindberg to approach schools for permission to talk to

the students about domestic violence in a format varied according to student needs and ages, she explains. “I think 100 Mile is very fortunate in having Axis here because I remember, years ago, really fighting

to get some of these programs here, my program included. “We’ve got good strong connections with the community and it’s nice people aren’t having to travel outside 100 Mile now to access some of these services.”

Sales down slightly compared to 2011 The BC Northern Real Estate Board (BCNREB) reported 1,002 sales with a value of $220,464,326 through the Multiple Listing Service (MLS) in the first quarter of 2012. This compares with 826 sales worth $174,936,681 to the end of March 2011. As of March 31, there were 3,842 properties of all types available for purchase through the MLS compared to 4,165 at this time last year. “There is positive news for both buyers and sellers in the northern market,” says BCNREB board president Joni Brown. “A healthy increase in sales in most areas has resulted in lower inventory of properties, which is good news for sellers. At the same time, buyers still have the benefit of historically low interest rates, suggesting it is a good time either to enter the market or to upgrade.” 100 Mile House and area have seen 38 (compared to 57 in 2011) properties of all types worth $6.7 million ($10.5 million) have been sold by realtors in the area since the beginning of the year. In addition to the 18 single-family homes that sold, 10 parcels of vacant land and four homes on acreage changed hands so far this year. At the end of the quarter, there were 668 (compared to 704 in 2011) properties available for purchase through the MLS.
