Room for local business to grow

Coast Mountain Board of Education Chair Art Erasmus said that the flushing program has worked well on water quality since the issue was discovered. “If you take the standing water that’s in the pipe and flush it out then the new water from the water supply comes in...and it hasn’t had time to leech any copper and lead into it yet,” he said. He pointed out that this is an issue that exists everywhere in Kitimat with plumbing older than 1990. Northern Health’s Chief Medical Officer Dr. Ronald Chapman told the Sentinel that the flushing program is internationally accepted as good practice.

Cameron Orr The influx of new people to Kitimat when it comes to the work camps means new challenges for local businesses but also a new opportunity to innovate. Those challenges and opportunities were the centre of discussion at the first Small Business Roundtable, hosted by the Kitimat Chamber of Commerce on March 26. To be the first of many such meetings, about five or six local businesses and community stakeholders sat around the table to share ideas on how the town can benefit from the community’s new economic development. “It’s kind of a missing component of impact management,” said Trish Parsons, executive director for the Kitimat Chamber of Commerce. She explained that about six years ago the Interagency and Social Impact Group was formed to be a proactive force when it came to this changing community. When they formed, the modernization at Rio Tinto Alcan’s smelter wasn’t set in stone, and the Methanex plant and the Eurocan Pulp and Paper mill were both still operating. As the community went through changes the group continued to shift focuses, such as on assisting people who were out of work. “Now that things have started to pick up and there’s more projects on the horizon...another component is the small businesses in the community.” Some of those issues include competing with wages paid to camp employees and retaining staff at local businesses. “The idea with the small business roundtable is to continue to meet and hopefully encourage a few other businesses to participate in it,” said Parsons. Local businesses are also being connected with the work camp, recently at a luncheon for businesses to get a sense of what goes on at the camp and how it works, and a plan is in place for a small trade show to take place at the camp. However for local business to benefit from the work camp there needs to be a proactive commitment. “For instance...if you’re not opening your store until noon on Sunday, these guys are off for the whole day, they’re not going to sit around for four or five hours waiting for a store to open when they can hop on one of the shuttle buses and go up to Terrace to shop,” said Parsons.

Schools address water quality Cameron Orr A water flushing program has been successful in reducing the amounts of lead and copper in the water supply at Kitimat public schools. On April 6 a joint announcement from the Coast Mountains School District and Northern Health alerted parents that elevated levels of copper and lead was found in test samples of area schools. Those schools affected are Nechako Elementary, Kildala Elementary, Kitimat City High and Mount Elizabeth Secondary School. However, despite the presence of the minerals in the water, it is believed that even without the flushing that it is not expected to produce any adverse health

effects, due to the “sporadic nature of water consumption in the school setting.” It is believed that the source of the minerals is old plumbing. Plumbing installed prior to 1990 is known to leech the material into water that sits in the pipe

dents would only be ingesting just under 50 per cent of the daily tolerable lead intake, taking into consideration all other sources of lead. As for the copper, they say that guidelines more frequently relate copper levels

“The concentrations certainly were not high enough to cause any toxic symptoms.” — which is why flushing the water works at bringing the quality up. In a Frequently Asked Questions document prepared by Northern Health they say that the worst case scenario, developed by the BC Centre for Disease using pre-flush water samples, stu-

to things such as taste and odour, and that there are currently no health guidelines in relation to copper levels in water. “The likelihood of any long term health effects from copper in the drinking water is very low,” the FAQ continues.

Lost Getting the most means bikes at working together RCMP Are you missing a bicycle? If so, the Kitimat RCMP may have it. The detachment issued a release saying that many found bikes are waiting to be claimed at their office. If your bike has been lost over the past few months people are encouraged to stop by the office on Lahakas Boulevard because it may be there. The police will need a description of the bike, including model, brand and colour.

Continued from page 1 “There’s lots of opportunities for our local businesses to make a few changes, she added. “Simply because they’re in a construction village it doesn’t mean they’re not spending money here or don’t have the opportunity to spend money here. In addition, the approach to benefiting economically will mean a regional approach to commerce. Parsons said that people had called her upset that Terrace has brochures in the work camp promoting their services. However that’s not necessarily such a bad thing, she said. She noted that there are many people

who come into town from as far as Burns Lake to buy specialized items available in Kitimat stores, and who make a weekend trip out of it, using the town’s other facilities like the pool.

“There’s lots of opportunities for our local businesses to make a few changes.

Water Continued from page 1 He said that the first water samples were taken from Nechako Elementary when staff there began to question water quality when fish living at the school were not thriving. “The concentrations certainly were not high enough to cause any toxic symptoms, he said.

Just a day away!

Board considers a longer spring break

Art Erasmus teachers. One parent remarked that living up north means more travel time to get to any destination, so an extra week would make family vacations much easier to accommodate. A school administrator also noted at the meeting that many students effectively work on a two week spring break schedule anyway and a two week holiday could cut absenteeism. Reid Nelson, president of the Kitimat District Teachers Association, said that a meeting of the Coast Mountains Teachers Federation had passed a motion endorsing a two week spring break. Among the reasons they support it is that two weeks gives

teachers longer re-cooperation time making them more productive and reducing the use of sick days. They see results like that after the Christmas holidays. One parent did ask of the implications on the CUPE union employees. Board Chair Art Erasmus said that they are aware of potential affects on CUPE members and the intent is to speak to CUPE if the two week holiday idea progresses. That being the case, he said the idea for a longer break was never intended as a cost cutting measure. While it is possible for the board to make a decision on the calendar tonight it is not their intention to do so, but a decision does have to be made by the end of May.

Cameron Orr Tasked with a $5,000 budget, Kitimat’s Leisure Services set to clear river access in Cablecar and Radley Park in time for the Easter long weekend. And they were successful in in that task, said Director of Leisure Services Martin Gould. However he wasn’t immediately aware of what the final cost was for the work in the week immediately proceeding Easter. Councillor Mary Murphy had brought the issue up at the April 2 council meeting, citing the emerging Steelhead run in the river as a draw for anglers, who otherwise would be unable to get to the river with the snow on the ground. For reference, Director of Engineering Tim Gleig, acting as manager at the April 2 meeting, said that the Cablecar dike is not usually plowed but it would be looked at with council’s direction. Gould at the meeting said that there was a lot more snow leftover in town after this past winter and estimates for snow clearing at Radley Park and the road access at the Big Spruce tree, were in the range of $1,200 to $1,500. Such an amount didn’t faze councillors. Phil Germuth was quick to pounce on that amount with a remark that seemed to send a sucker punch to everyone in the gallery. “If we can give $15,000 to Shames,” he said, then council can spend a few thousand on its own fishing spots.

To let anglers at the river for the long weekend council ordered staff to clear out the snow at Radley Park and the Cablecar river access road.

Cameron Orr The Coast Mountains School District will be discussing a two-week spring break schedule at their meeting on tonight in Terrace. The board held consultations in Kitimat, Terrace and Hazelton asking for input on an adjusted calendar. Their two options, the other being the standard calendar in place for this year, are similar in most ways — both calendars end school for the year on June 27, and the first day of school is still Sept. 4. However in the adjusted calendar spring break lasts an extra week, starting on March 18 with students returning to school on April 1. To achieve that extra week, the school district would have to make up an extra four days. To do that they propose adding six minutes to each school day. When the board was in Kitimat on April 4 they heard near unanimous support for the idea from parents and from

The carrot of exemptions It’s pleasant to see that Kitimat Council will be debating tax exemptions that could possibly lead to a revitalized downtown. Certainly the downtown core of the community is due for a facelift. That was made most clear to me as I was hip deep in old reports and documents around this office and came across a small cut-out foam board showing an illustration from a study, referred to as the Facade Improvement Case Study. The small poster showed a photo from the lower City Centre parking lot, looking towards KIR and the Home Hardware at the right, reaching to the far end of the mall on the left. Above it was a mock image showing what that section could look like. It included some new fronts for the retail sections and the parking lot even had meridians with trees. All in all it was a subtle but clean difference between the proposed and the existing. That study, in case you were wondering, was made in 1994. I wish I could tell you more about it however the report itself was lost in the pile I referred to. However, at least it shows me that the downtown has needed work for the better part of 20 years. At the council meeting Corinne Scott referred to section 226 of the Community Charter, which is a section you may be familiar with if you read this space regularly. It’s the one that sets out, in as plain English as is possible in a legal document, that a town can give a tax exemption for revitalization. When the discussion comes back to the council I hope it turns out to be an easy decision. In this case Scott has pointed out that the town could be eligible for grant money that would make up the difference of what the town would otherwise have received, for the duration of the exemption. So what the town is looking at is basically a free way to encourage businesses to tidy up the town. Who could say no to that? And a last minute addition to this column, in the mall they have posted conceptual art of the proposed hotel at City Centre Mall. It’s a striking piece of architecture. It’s also another good reason that the entire town should get in on some revitalization. Cameron Orr

The April funk of playoff season Writing today, it’s April 11 and most Canadians are in some kind of a funk. It’s not the weather, or government cutbacks, or because of the approach the eve of the tax-filing deadline. No, it’s because the first round of Stanley Cup playoffs CZ "MMBO )FXJUTPO begin again tonight and this time, only two of seven Canadian procelebrating a last-three finish for the third fessional hockey teams are involved in the NHL action, the Ottawa Sena- season in a row – but somehow excused because they were in the finals, losing in tors and the Vancouver Canucks. But in all these cities, the questions There are other owner “falling on sword” (well not really) reactions, such as asked will be deep and intrusive and actions letters of apology published in city dailies, will result in numerous personnel changes, press conferences and “here’s why” expres- no doubt. So it’s that time, unless your favourite sions of explanation/excuses from the GMcoaches of perennial losers like the Leafs team is American because of its top Cawho haven’t seen the post-season playoff nadian or Russian stars, it’s time to pick a action since the lockout – a spread of about booster replacement Canadian-based team that’s still in the running. Thus, rationalization therefore becomes the “raison d’etre” for all of us for the next several weeks. Why do so many Canadian teams fail to make the playoffs? After all, we are the cradle of hockey, aren’t we? Today’s Globe and Mail asked the annual question in a plaintive way. “... Why are Canada’s hockey teams, all of them financially healthy, such losers? Because the organizations tolerate losing or don’t know how to produce winning teams?” Hey wait! While it may be a bit of a stretch, in recent years every Canadian team but Toronto has had a nice run in the playoffs. Each time national interest in the teams and cities flared brightly. A Stanley Cup or two would have been nice but it’s not the end of life as we know it. It is also worth remembering there are a couple hundred seasons in total among the 13 teams in the league that have never won the ultimate trophy even once, while there are two Canadian teams that have come very close to their first ever win (Canucks one win away, 2011), Senators three wins away in 2007, while Buffalo and L.A. Kings have also been two wins away from their first cup. So as the marathon starts and continues, if your favourite team is out of the running, spare a sympathetic thought for the fans of so many teams which truly have had a lost less opportunities for the Holy Grail of hockey than most Canadian team fans. ahewitson@telus.net

Amen. and in one sense that is encouraging news. We have gone through a stretch of gloom and doom scenarios these past years with mill closures and such, and now everyone seems to be rubbing their hands together awaiting this new era of prosperity. But does prosperity really make people satisfied? I would submit to you that it does not. Many people think, “If I had lot’s of money I would be really happy. Maybe I could buy that new car” And yes, it can give us some emotional happiness for a time; but what happens when the new car smell wears off? What most people do is trade in the old clunker on a new one. But this is an endless cycle that leads nowhere. The problem is that everything in this world is slowly breaking down (including us).
