Volunteer Week

Allan Wishart Free Press The Vanderhoof International Airshow will fly again. But with the last show having been in the 1990s, organizers are keeping their feet on the ground in planning the August event. “We took a look at a bigger event,” says Peet Vahi, one of the organizers, “but it wouldn’t have been fiscally responsible.” Instead, they are looking at a small fly-in event to be held Aug. 11. “We picked that date so it wouldn’t conflict with the Quesnel Skyfest, which is the week prior,” Vahi says. This year’s event, he feels, will be more like a throwback to the early days of the airshow in the 1970s. “We’re looking at a fly-in. Some of the pilots may even just camp under the wings of their planes, like they did in the 70s.” There had been interest from outside Vanderhoof about whether the airshow was going to start up again, and it looks like there may be a blast from the past as well. “A couple of the guys who used to entertain at the shows in the 90s are willing to help out and come up for the day. “They cut their teeth here, I guess, so they want to come back and help.” The show this year will be aimed at the flight enthusiast, Vahi says. “We’re going to keep it to two hours with an announcer.” After that, there will be an opportunity for people to get together without leaving the airport, something they couldn’t have done in the old days. “There have been so many improvements at the airport. There are a lot more hangars there, so we’re able to hold a dinner and dance on-site.” Many of the members of the new society have experience working on the Vanderhoof airshow, so while there is a lot of work to do in the next four months, Vahi isn’t too concerned. “There’s a lot of little odds and ends to think through,” he says, “but we’ve got a core of greyhairs who worked it out before.”

ER update for Fort St. James Ruth Lloyd Caledonia Courier April will see some relief for Fort St. James residents needing emergency care this month. Locum physicians have been found to accommodate the opening of the emergency room (ER) for five days before the end of April. The ER will now be open April 19, April 21-22, and April 24-25. The rest of the hospital will remain open, operating as it has been,

with lab and x-ray facilities. The rest of the days of the month of April, besides the ones listed above, the emergency room will be closed and patients requiring emergency care will have to be transported to Vanderhoof or Prince George. Patients transported by ambulance need to arrange for their own ride back to Fort St. James, as transportation for the return trip is not provided. Tim Bekhuys, Environmental and Sustainability Director of New Gold, Inc., presents Ursula Morris of the Northern John Howard Society with a donation of $3,000 which will be used to bring violence prevention programming to Vanderhoof, Fraser Lake and Fort St. James. The need for men’s violence prevention programming has been stated as the area’s most important social service issue by social service agencies in the region. Representatives from women’s groups, alcohol and drug and mental health agencies, the RCMP and victim assistance groups have come together to support the Northern John Howard Society in bringing their S.T.O.P. program to our communities. Stop Taking it Out on Your Partner (S.T.O.P.) is a voluntary program designed for adult men who are not facing cur-

rent criminal charges for assaulting their partner. Participants meet for a three-hour group session one evening per week for 14 weeks. The program will support men and their partners and families as they deal with stress, mental health and addiction issues, unemployment, and healing from trauma and abuse. New Gold’s Tim Bekhuys attended the most recent committee meeting, and in keeping with New Gold, Inc.’s reputation of being strong community supporters, brought a $3,000 donation to help get the program up

and running. This donation comes in addition to New Gold’s donations of $3,300 to the Vanderhoof and Districts 4-H Council and $2,700 to the Nechako Valley Search and Rescue Society. New Gold will open their Vanderhoof office in May with Kathie LaForge (currently the District of Vanderhoof’s Economic Development Officer) as their Community Liaison. snowpack

Allan Wishart Free Press Snow packs in northern B.C. continue to run well above average, leading to concerns of floods this spring. According to the April 1 report from the River Forecast Centre, snow packs in both the Upper Fraser and Nechako basins are the highest recorded on that date since records have been kept, a period of about 60 years. The Upper Fraser is at 152 per cent of normal, while the Nechako is even higher at 165 per cent. The report says combined cooler and wetter weather in March across the province meant significant growth in all snow packs. In fact, all regions are now above normal, with the Okanagan-Kettle the lowest at 104 per cent of normal. While the added snow in some basins has lessened the danger of drought this spring and summer, it has raised the risk of flooding in other areas. “This year, snow packs are at levels of concern for increased flood risk in the Upper Fraser, Nechako, Columbia, Kootenay, Peace and SkeenaNass basins,” the report says. By April 1, about 95 per cent of the annual snow pack has normally accumulated. For most areas, the change from accumulation to melt starts in the middle of

the month, making the April 1 survey key in assessing flood risk. The report notes the weather over the next few months will be the determining factor in how much, if any, flooding occurs. The current long-range forecast is for cooler weather for the rest of April and into May, followed by warmer temperatures. While this may sound like a good scenario for avoiding floods in the

region, the report cautions it could lead to more problems. “(The forecast for cooler weather) has the potential to prolong the snow accumulation season and delay the onset of the snow melt season. ... A rapid transition from cooler to hotter weather during the snow-melt season (May and June) is something to watch for because of its potential impact on flood generation.”

Fiddler on the roof Submitted Sylvia Byron The Vanderhoof Community Theatre Society and Nechako Valley Secondary School are producing “Fiddler on the Roof”, for 6 evening performances; April 26-28, and May 3-5 at NVSS. First performed by NVSS students 20 years ago, the 2012 production features 26 NVSS students, seven elementary students, and 14 adult community members. The show’s music is provided by a live orchestra. Fiddler on the Roof is the story of the Jewish people in Anatevka, in early 20th century Czarist Russia. The

story is told through the trials of a poor dairyman, as he comes to grips with the changes threatening his family

and his community’s traditions. Fiddler is one of the most widely-recognized musicals of all time, a

poignant and timeless blend of unforgettable music, rich historical significance, and, of course, laughter.

Patient Voice Network Residents of Vanderhoof and Prince George are invited to a Patient Voices Network (PVN) orientation in Vanderhoof on Sunday, April 29. The Patient Voices Network is made up of BC patients, caregivers, family members, and others who wish to use their experiences for positive change to health care. They participate in engagements like focus groups, advisory committees, conferences, and working groups across the province. To ensure that Northern voices are represented, PVN will be hosting

a tailored orientation for residents of Vanderhoof, Prince George, and the surrounding area. This

event was spearheaded by two Vanderhoof residents: PVN volunteer Lorraine Thibeault

and Northern Health Community Developer Raquel Miles.

for one-time HPV vaccine A one-time human papillomavirus vaccine program will be offered to women in British Columbia who were born in 1991, 1992 and 1993 to protect them from cervical cancer. “We have been offering the school-based HPV vaccination program since 2008, which has helped to protect thousands of British Columbian girls from cervical cancer,” said provincial health officer Dr. Perry Kendall. “I am pleased that with this program we can expand that to ensure that all young British Columbian women aged 21 and under will have had an opportunity to protect themselves.” HPV infections are the cause of almost all

cases of cervical cancer. It’s estimated the vaccine can prevent up to 70 per cent of these cancers, as well as a number of precancerous changes to the cervix that require treatment. The vaccine will be available for the women starting in mid-April 2012 and will be provided in a series of three doses over a six-month period. These young women will be able to receive the vaccine from pharmacists, physicians, sexual health and youth clinics, post secondary institution student health services and public health units. B.C. began offering the HPV vaccine to Grade 6 and 9 girls in

2008. Girls born in 1994 and later have been offered the vaccine in the school-based program. Until now, those born in previous years have been ineligible for the publicly funded vaccine. After studying the data on the vaccine and its cost-effectiveness, the BC Communicable Disease Policy Advisory

Committee recommended that B.C. offer a onetime program for young women. “The HPV vaccine is a safe and highly effective vaccine for the prevention of cervical cancer,” said Dr. Monika Naus, medical director of immunization programs, BC Centre for Disease Control. “We recommended this

one-time program so that we could protect more young women from cancer and provide coverage for those who missed the school program.” The cost of the program will be about $3.5 million, plus the cost of physician and pharmacist immunizations through the Medical Services Plan and Pharmacare.

Nechako summer flows Open letter to John Rustad, MLA Dear Mr Rustad, I have lived on the Nechako in Vanderhoof for over 40 years, and have been flooded once, in 2007. I have some serious concerns about Alcan and their management of the water levels in the Nechako. We are constantly reminded in the media that snow pack levels in the Nechako Basin are at historic highs, not seen for over 60 years. To me this means the maximum amount of water should be released from the Skins Lake Spillway now before the run off starts. The river has been ice free for a couple of weeks now, and although the flows were slightly higher over the last winter months, no extra water is being released now. Last year we had huge volumes of water released all spring and summer, and the ground water level was just below that which will flood my basement. This year the snow pack is higher, and yet water is not being released early. Why? The levels last year flooded much of the trail network around Vanderhoof rendering it unusable, and contributed to extra river bank erosion and loss. I fear that with the factors of global warming changing the climate and the new hydrology produced by the pine beetle, the future is not being planned for. It seems that there is a “hope for the best” attitude by all concerned. It is evident from the last few years that Alcan does not have the capacity to handle these new management challenges for the Nechako and Knewstub reservoir. There is a need for more draw down capacity that would enable more water storage to accommodate the erratic and large volumes that can be anticipated in the new climate situation. The ability to draw down is limited by the narrows, and the lone generating tunnel in use. Moreover, what will happen if that tunnel is blocked, or the turbine needs attention? Alcan should be encouraged to finish the second generator tunnel, and be allowed to dredge the narrows to a limited extent to allow a slightly larger draw down. This would not result in an Arrow Lakes appearance of the reservoir, merely a more normal lake situation of shore line and water level fluctuations in line with the seasons. Rock down to Electric Avenue Bill Phillips Free Press The snowblower has officially been put away for the summer. So, if we get another dump, it’s likely my fault. Haven’t fired up the scooter just yet, but I do have the battery charging and it will only be a matter of about 500 kicks on the kick-start to hear the angry putt-putt of that 49cc engine. Hey, with the price of gas at $1.33 per litre and expected to climb when the warm weather comes, the wallet will actually be able to collect some dust. It gets pretty disheartening when you hit the $100 limit on the gas pump before the tank gets filled and you’re heading to the gas pumps more than the grocery store. I’m thinking one of the new electric cars will soon be moving up on my wish-list. The province is even getting into the act. B.C.’s popular Clean Energy Vehicle (CEV) Program is getting an extra jolt (that pun came from the press release so I can’t take credit for it) from the implementation of the $2.74 million Community Charging Infrastructure Fund that will see 570 public charging stations across municipalities, regional governments, First Nations, and B.C. businesses and institutions by March 31, 2013. The Community Charging Infrastructure Fund will be managed, promoted and administered by the nonprofit Fraser Basin Council. Battery-powered electric vehicles should cost as little as $300 per year in electricity bills compared to

upwards of $1,500 per year to fuel a gasoline-powered car or, in my case, almost three times that amount for the honkin’ big V-8 I need to carry pillows home from Sears. An electric vehicle is starting to sound pretty attractive and I’m not alone in that. To date, B.C. represents over 22 per cent of the national electric vehicle sales for the Nissan Leaf, reaffirming British Columbia as a market leader in the clean energy vehicle market and in March 2011, MercedesBenz Canada announced plans to build a new facility in Burnaby to manufacture fuel-cell stacks for hydrogen fuel-cell electric vehicles. One of the arguments for extracting as much oil as we can out of the oil patch, as quickly as we can, is that while everyone wants to get rid of CO2 belching automobiles, it isn’t going to happen soon so let’s squeeze all we can out of the Alberta sand in the meantime. The best way to do that is for society to make the move away from the gas-guzzlers willingly before it is forced to when the world runs out of oil. The only way we can do that is if there are options. Electric vehicles are becoming that option. It’s nice to see the province getting involved in building these stations. Hopefully it’s just to kick-start the process. Wouldn’t it be nice to see an entrepreneur be able to make a living with an electricity-only service station? By the way, in May the Environmental Assessment Agency will be holding public hearings and consultation sessions in Prince George on the proposed Site C hydroelectric dam. Holy crap, this doesn’t get any easier, does it?

April is Cancer Awareness Month

A8 www.ominecaexpress.com

Daffodil Month, held every April, is a national fundraising campaign of the Canadian Cancer Society. During the month, Society volunteers are involved with numerous activities to raise vital funds for the fight against cancer. Depending on location, activities include selling fresh daffodils; asking people to make a donation and wear a daffodil pin throughout the month to show their support for people living with cancer; and canvassing neighbourhoods for donations door to door. As part of its annual Daffodil Month activities the Canadian Cancer Society has designated April 27 as Daffodil Day. This is a special day when Canadians can show their support for those living with cancer and to remember those who have died. Funds raised throughout the month help the Canadian Cancer Society prevent cancer, fund research to outsmart cancer, empower, inform and support Canadians living with cancer and advocate for public policies to improve the health of Canadians. The Canadian Cancer Society is dedicated to the goal of controlling and eventually conquering cancer. Each year, the Canadian Cancer Society commits a percentage of the money we raise to support leading-edge cancer research. The Society allocates the money through a strict national review process that involves scientific experts and lay people, who are often cancer survivors. This process ensures that the money is directed only to excellent cancer research across Canada. Some history In 1947, the former National Cancer Institute of Canada was formed through a joint initiative of the Canadian Cancer Society and the Department of National Health and Welfare. In the 1940s, there was little knowledge of how to prevent cancer. There were no tools for early detection of cancer, and the only treat-

Society has invested more than $1 billion to cancer research. This funding has contributed to a revolution in our understanding of cancer, which has set the stage for a new era in cancer detection, therapy and prevention. The challenge now is to continue to expand and exploit existing knowledge to develop even better treatments, detection and prevention strategies. In February 2009, the Canadian Cancer Society and the former National Cancer Institute of Canada integrated into a single organization. Research continues to be an integral part of the Canadian Cancer Society’s mission. The grant application and review process is managed by

Ovarian cancer is usually detected in its later stages, making it a particularly deadly disease. It kills approximately 1500 Canadian women each year. Early detection is a woman’s best line of defense, making annual testing vitally important.

One in seven Canadian men will develop prostrate cancer during his lifetime, mostly after age 70. It often has no symptoms, so early detection is critical. With early detection, cure rates are as high as 95%. Ask your doctor about a specific antigen (PSA) blood test and the digital rectal exam.

While there are many positive educational experiences to be gained the business company has been structured to ensure that royalties from tuitions in the offshore schools and from the ELL programs will first repay the Business Company’s start up loans and then provide an ongoing source of revenue to its shareholder. Featuring the spirit of the local people Chief Kw’eh recognized nationally Ruth Lloyd Caledonia Courier Chief Kw’eh (known as Kwah) is a lot more than a name on some local streets and a building. The local historical figure has now been recognized for his national importance in history on recommendation from the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada. The historic chief’s importance to the history of Canada was among 13 recognized on March 22 of this year. “Today’s designations will bring to life the spiritual, cultural and physical ties that First Nations have to this country, for both Canadians and visitors to Canada,” said The Honourable Peter Kent, minister of environment, in a release. “They will give future generations an understanding of moments in time that span the centuries.” The recognition came after years of research and hard work by one of Chief Kw’eh’s descendants, his great-great granddaughter, Lillian Sam. Curiosity about her family’s history came upon Sam slowly through her life; she did not grow up with stories about her family and spent time in Lejac Residential School. As a child she did spend time with her grandfather Louis Billy Prince on the Stuart River, but her grandfather was a quiet man who spoke Carrier (Dakelh) a lot but he did not share many stories with his young granddaughter. “I knew he was an important man,” explained Sam, who helped him correspond with some important people over the years, as his hands shook too much to be able to write legibly at that time. Her own father was a veteran of the Second World War, and he also did not say a lot, and neither did Sam’s mother. Her mother was from Yekooche, so her background was even more of a mystery to her daughter. “That was the seed there that grew until I had time to look at it, examine it,” said Sam.

Elders Speak and Sam’s curiosity about her background grew. One other important book was by Mrs. Lizette Hall, The Carrier My People, it had information about Chief Kw’eh and Chief Louis Billy Prince. A replica of Chief Kwah’s dagger was on display including a recording off the story of the last massacre at the Fort St. James National Historic Site and further research connected Sam to a James Monroe, who then returned some artifacts to Sam which were from her grandfather, including his rifle, and a beaded handbag which had a prayer book printed by Father Morice. Lillian Sam sits with a photo of the original The Nak’azdli Elders AdChief Kwah grave site and her grandfather. Chief Kw’eh (Parks Canada information) Chief Kw’eh used kinship ties as well as personal qualities and gifts to gain traditional rights and leadership over a wide territory and numerous Carrier (Dakelh-ne) communities in the late 18th century, bringing new stability after decades of warfare between the Carrier and Chilcotin in north-central British Columbia. He oversaw the end of the era when traditional Aboriginal leadership in this region functioned without foreign interference. He used his skills as a diplomat and leader to negotiate a mutually satisfactory relationship with Euro-Canadian traders who entered lands to which he had traditional rights, played a significant role in the development of the fur trade, and showed moral strength in resolving without violence a conflict with the young Hudson’s Bay Company clerk James Douglas. A focus for Carrier identity, he has an ongoing legacy among the Central Carrier communities as “dreamer of the salmon.” It is said that as long as he is remembered, he will continue to provide for people by presiding over the salmon fishery from his burial place at the mouth of the Stuart River. Chief Kw’eh was born into a noble Carrier family in a period of intense

rivalry and warfare with the Chilcotin people as both struggled to control the exchange of coastal and interior trade. By slaying his father’s killer Kw’eh took over the latter’s prestige and hereditary hunting territories. He increased and consolidated his authority through marriage, the traditional potlatch distribution of food and goods, and of salmon and beaver hunting rights. He exhibited fine decision making abilities, instances of apparently supernatural gifts and the diplomatic skills of negotiation and measured response. Within the Carrier community he emerged as a strong leader with impressive physical abilities, wide influence and spiritual powers. Simon Fraser established the first fur trading post on Stuart Lake, in the midst of Chief Kw’eh’s territorial influence in 1806. With his control of the salmon fishery in the area, the post’s main source of sustenance, Kw’eh soon became his people’s representative with the newcomers who gave him, in addition to his Carrier honours, the title of fur trade chief. Chief Kw’eh used the diplomatic skills that had brought him prominence among the Carrier community to develop a relationship of relative equality in the new commercial fur trade. With regional control of the salmon fishery and the beaver hunt Chief Kw’eh encouraged his people to supply the North West and Hudson’s Bay Company traders both food and furs, and oversaw an equitable distribution of European trade goods in return. He used his influence and power to melt the disparate needs and abilities of two dissimilar cultures, establishing a mutually beneficial and substantially non-violent relationship. Chief Kw’eh has acquired mythic qualities and deep symbolic meanings for the Carrier and has become a focus of the “golden age” of traditional Carrier life. His gravesite near the mouth of the Stuart River is maintained with reverence by the Carrier people.

Burns Lake tests B.C. forest policy Tom Fletcher

Black Press The B.C. government will have a decision this spring on whether the Babine Forest Products mill can be rebuilt after it was destroyed by fire in January, the local MLA says. Nechako Lakes MLA John Rustad says he is confident enough wood can be found to keep the rebuilt mill running, despite widespread pine beetle damage to

the surrounding forest and the presence of other highvolume sawmills in the region. The decision has implications for a much broader area of the B.C. Interior, where beetle-killed trees are deteriorating and alternatives to conventional lumber production are needed. “In order for us to be looking at a rebuild, in five or 10 years’ time there is not going to be enough fibre in the Lakes Timber Supply Area under current management assumptions,” Rustad said. “And so the only way

we can get to what we need in terms of a rebuild is to expand the amount of fibre that would be available.” One way to do that is to relax the “visual quality objectives” that have prevented logging in areas visible from highways and communities. Rustad said that proposal had unanimous support of mayors at the 2010 Union of B.C. Municipalities convention, as Interior communities looked at the deterioration of beetle-killed trees and the potential loss of timber supply in coming years.

Express Help celebrate Earth Day on April 21st in Texas “Re-Think”) ·Compost ·Bring your own

Submitted Justin Hill Earth Day is on April 21. To help celebrate Earth Day, Nechako Valley Waste Reduction Initiative is hosting Matt Hill on April 18 and 19 at the local elementary schools, and NVSS. Matt Hill is the founder of Run for One Planet and a well-known cartoon actor who has starred in animated series such as “Ed” in Ed, Edd & Eddy, “Tender Heart” in Care Bears, and “Korey” in Being Ian, not to mention he was “Raphael” in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! His voice is a unique educational tool for the many kids who are already electrified by the cartoons he plays to learn what they can do to “help save the planet”. Hill had a dream to inspire a continent by completing a very difficult expedition that some people may call unrealistic and that’s when Run For One Planet was created. Hill and his partner, Stephanie Tait started their quest of “inspiring environmental action, one step at a time.” May 4, 2008 the duo ran across Canada and along the perimeter of America, totaling 11,000 miles – an amazing distance that equals out to 420 marathons. During NWRI’s 4th Annual Earth Day Community Clean Up is happening April 21. Come down to Riverside Park at 10 a.m. to choose a route and pick up some bags for collecting trash. Tim Hortons will be there with complimentary coffee, hot chocolate, donuts and T-shirts for participants! At noon the NVFN will be hosting a local food BBQ for all volunteers. Thanks to Integris Credit Union of helping make the BBQ happen. It’s a great chance to help make the community look great after a long winter and enjoy some beautiful spring weather. Hope to see you there!

their quest of running a marathon each almost everyday, they spoke to over 30,000 young leaders, in more than 220 presentations, and raising over $130,000 for their Legacy Fund for Kids. On May 8, 2009 they had officially finished their journey, and can now call the date their own since it has

now officially been proclaimed “Run for One Planet Day” in the city of Vancouver. Hill has a fun and uplifting spirit about him that tends to excite a crowd no matter what the age group. With a little help from his past as a voice actor he has a great way of connecting with the crowd by uti-

lizing his voices from past characters which keeps the audience engaged and ready to learn about the quest of inspiring environmen-

tal action. As Matt Hill say’s it just takes one step at a time. Take your step to make a change for your environment. What can you do to make a difference in your community? Here are 10 small steps Matt Hill suggests: ·Eat Local and Organic ·Turn off your car ·Eliminate plastic bags ·Use green cleaners ·Turn off the lights ·Turn off the taps ·Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (from a 6th grader

Northern students think Tanning is OUT The Canadian Cancer Society BC & Yukon completed its second annual Tan-Free Grad Challenge, and secondary school students across B.C. had a chance to fight back against cancer by encouraging their classmates to forego the “prom tan”, and instead, rock the skin they’re in. Throughout March, the Canadian Cancer Society challenged grads in eight northern high schools to take a stand against skin cancer and to commit to being tan-free for their graduation. Competition to be the school with the highest percent of tan-free pledges was very close. Duchess Park Secondary School in Prince George edged out the seven other competing high schools with a formidable ninety-nine percent of grads pledging to be tan-free for their graduation! Laura Fletcher and Kayla Buttress were the tan-free leaders spearheading the campaign at Duchess Park Secondary where 143 out of 144 eligible grads took the pledge to be tan free for grad. “We really wanted to raise awareness about skin cancer. There are so many myths that need to be broken” says Fletcher. “I learned a lot about the dangers of tanning

and after learning about the consequences, I will never tan again,” explained Buttress. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in Canada and over-exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun and indoor tanning equipment is the major cause of skin cancer. The good news is that skin cancer is also one of the most preventable cancers. Melanoma skin cancer – the most severe form of skin cancer – is the third most common form of cancer for people between the ages of 15 and 29. In an effort to prevent skin cancer, grade 12 students from northern high schools lead the Challenge by educating their peers on the dangers of Ultraviolet radiation from both the sun and indoor tanning equipment and by collecting tan-free pledges from their fellow students. “We know that there is no safe way to get a tan and that any use of indoor tanning equipment before the age of 35 can increase a person’s risk of melanoma” says Kerensa Medhurst, health promotion coordinator with the Canadian Cancer Society. “With teens still accessing tanning beds, we have our work cut out for us”.
