Old computers — new opportunities WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

C

omputers are enmeshed in everything we do, but being on a low income makes it hard to plug into the growing cyber world. Two retired men at Literacy Alberni are giving low-income families a chance to make themselves computer literate. Bob Wagenvoort and Manfred Baron donate their time to Literacy Alberni to do the refurbishing work. They started after answering an ad soliciting someone to do the work. Their quiet lowkey work has thus far gone unnoticed, but not completely. The Alberni Valley Chamber of Commerce recently gave both men a special recognition award for their work. The program at Literacy Alberni refurbishes old computers and sells them for a nominal fee to low-income families. More than 90 computers have been provided so far, with an additional 30 being used in-house at the literacy centre. The organization gets their computers donated to them from individuals, businesses, government agencies and schools. Once donated, Wagenvoort and Baron inspect the machines to see if they’re still usable. Those that can’t be used are stripped of usable parts then donated to the Salvation Army for recycling. The most common

issue that the men encounter with computers when they disassemble them is the dirt. “Some of them are just loaded with it and it’s the biggest cause of computer failure, Wagonvoort said. “People need to remove the tower and blow the dust out at least twice a year. Computers from schools and government agencies are well maintained and usually in the best shape when they are donated. “They’re usually upgrading their systems and that’s why they’re donating, Baron said. They don’t necessarily make an old machine new, but

that make it like new. “We wipe the hard drive clean with a special program then install a new operating system and some programs, Wagenvoort said. Windows 7, Microsoft Office, Firefox and Foxit are installed. The computers don’t possess the ability to run video games though. “It gives people the basics to learn how to write, use a spreadsheet, and surf the Internet — to teach themselves to be computer literate, Baron said. The program is licensed to refurbish computers so it doesn’t run into any problems with

installing programs. The men are clear that they don’t repair computers; they provide a service to a low-income population and are not in competition with computer stores. A growing number of seniors are wanting computers and to learn how to use them.

The men are as interesting as the program itself. They donate between 30-40 hours a week for the initiative. Baron donates extra time on top of that as a tutor. The hours equate to a full work week but it’s a labour of love, the men say. Baron, 61, has been retired for four years.

He worked at APD mill for 14 years. His favourite subjects were chemistry and band in school. A studious man, Baron wasn’t satisfied with his first computer — a Commodore 64. “It had no hard drive and used 5 Âź inch floppy disks,â€? he said. “I purchased the

parts and built one myself. At APD he was considered the resident computer geek by computer technicians who were hired to do the mill’s computer work. “They ended up trusting me to help with the computers they worked on locally, Baron said. After Baron retired he tried to stay active by building a wood shop in his backyard. “I enjoyed myself but I really needed something to get me out of the house and socially interact, he said. “And I think my wife was tired of seeing me around the house too. Wagensvoort, 73, has been retired for 22 years. He was born in Holland and came to the Alberni Valley in 1973 after spending some time in Red Deer, Alta. He took the trade school stream in Holland where he was trained as a mechanic, a trade he worked at for 31 years. He bought his first computer at age 51 but like Baron wasn’t satisfied with its performance so he bought the parts and built one. He remembers buying a voice recognition system and spending two weeks trying to install it on his computer. “I’m a trouble shooter so it’s a natural fit, Wagensvoort said. Baron and Wagensvoort live near the literacy centre and only two blocks from one another, yet they’d never met until now. “I keep him from getting bored and give him someone to talk to, Baron said.

Pay it forward with 10th ‘It hasn’t sunk in yet’ Ave. Plaza on Thursday Robinson named chamber’s citizen of the year WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

Random acts of kindness may earn you a little more than knowing you did a good deed next week. Tenth Avenue Plaza merchants have banded together to help promote International Pay It Forward Day on Thursday, April 26. Participating merchants will be on the lookout for citizens doing random acts of kindness around the plaza that day. No act is considered either too big or too small, and there should be no level of expectation in return other than the act should be paid forward. “We’ll be rewarding people with gifts for their good deeds,” Serious Coffee owner Clay Edghill said. “The people on the

Ask Us How!

‘She said... that the expression on people’s faces underlined the premise of the whole idea.’ – Clay Edghill receiving end of the good deed will receive cards asking them to pay it forward.” Merchants in participating stores will have draw boxes for doers of good deeds to enter their names for prize draws, Edghill said. B.C. is one of two provinces that officially acknowledge Pay It Forward day and Edghill is calling on the city to issue an official proclamation of such a day, he said. “It’s for the community and is something that we can

all do for each other and hopefully keep going,” he said. Edghill says he’s seen the 2000 movie Pay It Forward. The movie is about a boy who, as part of a social studies project, comes up with the idea of doing good deeds for three people and having them pay it forward while asking others to pay it forward and watching the experiment grow exponentially. Edghill says that his wife Meloney experienced “pay it forward” while on a trip to Alberta. “She left change with a cashier at a coffee shop and asked them to pay for the next person’s coffee,” Clay said. “She sat back and watched and said that the expression on people’s faces underlined the premise of the whole idea,” he said. reporter@albernivalleynews.com

It was a double win for the Tseshaht First Nation at the Port Alberni Chamber of Commerce Community Excellence Awards last week. Tseshaht tribe member Irene Robinson was named Port Alberni’s citizen of the year. And the tribe also won the chamber’s environmental award at the annual ceremony and dinner, which was attended by more than 100 people on April 11. . “This is surreal and feels like it isn’t happening – it hasn’t sunk in yet,” Robinson said. Held annually, the awards honour those in the community who go above and beyond, exceed expectation, and prove to be excellent at what they do. Robinson was up against District Parents Advisory Committee president Melody Burton, who helps coordinate the breakfast program

at Alberni District Secondary School. The win was a treat to Robinson, but was also a treat to event goers as she and her mother

and two sisters sang and danced to the Tseshaht victory song as soon as her name was read out. “This blows me away and wasn’t

something I was expecting,” Robinson said in her speech. Chamber vice president Peter Weinold used the phrase ‘you are what you learn’ when describing Robinson, who was clear about what she learned and from whom. “Jackie Adams from Ahousaht gave me the best advice years ago when she said ‘go back to school,’” said Robinson, who earned a BA in Aboriginal Studies from Malaspina University College (now VIU), and is now the literacy coordinator for the Port Alberni Friendship Centre. But she had other teachers as well. “I want to recognize my ancestors, who passed down language and teachings in a pretty dark time when it wasn’t safe to do so,” she said. Robinson said she also drew inspiration from her tribe’s elderly ladies, whose names she rattles off: Jessie Gallic, Wiinuk, Bessie Dick, Mabel Taylor, Margaret Shewish and Mabel Yukom. Continued/34

Huu-ay-aht take dispute to tribunal WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

The Huu-ay-aht First Nation is getting its first internal test since signing the Maanulth treaty. Tribe councillor John Jack confirmed that a dispute between the nation and two citizens, Norman and Rita Dennis is being taken before the Huuay-aht’s tribunal. Among other things, the tribe is claiming the couple made discriminatory statements. But, “I want to be clear: we are not taking Norman and Rita before the tribunal. We are taking their correspondence to and conduct with staff before it,” Jack said. According to the tribe’s website, the matter is the first application to be heard before the tribunal. The Huu-ayaht tribunal is an independent body that acts as a judiciary, and is manned by lawyers, community members and tribe officials. Its goal is to ensure lawful decision-making by government and to resolve disputes in a timely manner. Norman Dennis,

70, is a Huu-ay-aht citizen who lives in Vancouver with his family. He has questions for the elected leadership about issues that impact the whole nation and he’s not getting any answers, he said. “I don’t like going public like this but I don’t believe that I have any other choice,” Dennis said by phone. Dennis lists his concerns, which are numerous. Tribal officials are looking for another office in Alberni and members weren’t consulted, he said. “It doesn’t make sense when we have a million-dollar office building in Huu-ay-aht that’s damn near empty,” he said. “They’re from Huu-ay-aht, not Port Alberni. If they don’t want to work in Huu-ay-aht then they should resign.” Tribal jobs are another issue. Jobs are going to nonHuu-ay-aht citizens and this goes against the Maanulth treaty, which was supposed to bring employment to the signatories’ citizens. Dennis tried to raise the issue with tribe officials in a letter, he said. “They didn’t like it that I said ‘white

people,’ are getting jobs,” he said. “I didn’t mean it in the wrong way, it’s just a description.” Salaries paid to employees are exorbitant, Dennis said. “These people aren’t making $14 an hour,” he said. “And we’re supposed to be a poor nation?” As well, job postings are online for the most part. “Not everyone has a computer so they should mail them out too.” And most importantly, Dennis said. “They’re not involving the people in major spending decisions,” he said. “This is our money – our money not theirs – that they’re playing with.” Dennis said he’s corresponded with tribe officials three times and hasn’t received a satisfactory response. “I’m not afraid of them and not afraid to ask questions,” the retired businessman said. Jack confirmed that the Huu-ay-aht’s decision to seek office space in Alberni has to do with business and demographics. The tribe’s lease is coming up and they have to vacate, he said. Eighty five per cent of Huu ay-aht citizens live off reserve. Of

them, 40 per cent – up to 300 people – live in Port Alberni. The Huu-ay-aht hiring process is extensive, Jack said. Jobs are posted in Huu-ay-aht and Alberni, as well as on the tribe’s website, with local media, and on Facebook and bcjobs.ca. Qualifications come before ancestry, chief councillor Jeff Cook said. “We hire based on qualifications first,” he said. “If all things are equal

then we’ll hire a tribe member.” The staff pay structure was inherited from the previous council, Jack said. As well, wages are consistent with jobs that have similar responsibilities elsewhere. And citizens are involved with major spending decisions, Jack said. An infrastructure policy sets out how government makes capital decisions. Citizens are on

various committees that give input to council. And a citizens assembly can give direction to council with resolutions, Jack said. Times have changed where funding is concerned, he said. The tribe receives annual funding, which funds programs

and services, and onetime funding. “We don’t fund ongoing costs with one-time funding,” Jack said. “We have to be smart and disciplined about how we use our money.” The tribunal’s decision will be made public, Jack said.

Bring suicide into the light Dumbing down of environmentalism Suicide. It’s a difficult subject to think about, let alone talk about. Our natural inclination is to speak of it only in hushed whispers, if at all. It’s a topic so fraught with pain, so shrouded in darkness, that bringing it into a public space to talk about openly feels uncomfortable, unnatural even. But that’s part of the problem. Suicide is where our thoughts turn when we’re feeling especially isolated and alone. So we need to drag it out into the open, put it under a spotlight, and expose it for what it is: it is not the solution to your problem, whatever that problem may be. Which is why we applaud Cowichan Tribes for hosting its Circle of Light forum last week. Not only did Tribes organize this very public meeting to show Cowichan members that suicide is not the answer, it invited the media and other community stakeholders to witness the conversation. And the words of elders, and leaders such as National Chief Shawn A-in-chut Atleo, offered helpful, healthy alternatives. Atleo stressed the crucial role of family, and Chief Harvey Alphonse talked about the importance of listening. “If a young person, or an adult, is talking about this, stop and listen and take it seriously,” he said. “Even if it seems like there isn’t anything wrong, stop, and listen.” The Vancouver Island Crisis Society says suicide is a significant cause of death in Canada that annually exceeds deaths from car crashes and crime. This has to stop. Stop, and listen. Don’t let suicide creep back into the darkness where it thrives. — Cowichan News Leader

ICTORIA – David Suzuki has resigned as a director of his namesake foundation so it won’t be the target of federal government “attacks.” This news is conveyed to me in a Globe and Mail report that is typically tilted in deference to “Canada’s most famous environmentalist.” The usual assumptions are woven in: Suzuki is a saint. His every utterance is treated as scientific fact, even when it’s a left-wing political rant. The Conservative government is a front for Big Oil that has “attacked” environmental groups by reminding them that political activities are not eligible for charitable tax exemptions. In recent years, the David Suzuki Foundation’s campaign focus has been noticeably in step with the large U.S.

foundations that fund most of B.C.’s enviro-scare industry: first salmon farming and now the Alberta “tar sands” in all its exaggerated horror. Suzuki’s personal activities aren’t easily distinguished from those of his foundation, as was illustrated with his recent CBC documentary that demonized the “tar sands.” Diseased fish were displayed, but natural contamination of the Athabasca River was glossed over. Aboriginal objections were highlighted, while local support and economic benefits were overlooked. This isn’t science or charity. It’s tabloid journalism. Sensationalize, ignore facts that weaken the drama, play to people’s emotions. And he expects to be subsidized by the CBC and charitable tax exemptions as well?

This news comes as I finish reading Patrick Moore’s book, Confessions of a Greenpeace Dropout. I was one of many young fans who cheered as Moore, Bob Hunter and the other 1970s Greenpeace pioneers set out from Vancouver to disrupt Soviet nuclear testing, and then turned to the regime’s slaughter of whales. In 1986, Moore split with Greenpeace and worked to set up a family chinook salmon farm. He said Greenpeace opposed aquaculture because it destroys tropical mangrove swamps. Tropical prawn farms have no rational connection with B.C., but a global organization needs simple ideas that sell. This approach was seen in an earlier 1980s campaign against chlorine in pulp mills. against dioxins and the herbicide 2,4,5-T were eventually dumbed down to opposing the use of chlorine in all industries, including production of PVC plastic. Pulp mills developed a way to eliminate trace dioxins from their production, but that didn’t matter once Greenpeace had a global campaign going. They still used chlorine, so they’re bad. Speaking of chlorine, PCBs are polychlorinated biphenyls, a persistent background toxin. Tests found levels three to five times higher in some wild salmon compared to farmed. But the wild salmon results were ignored in a 2004 study, used by Suzuki to depict farmed salmon as poisonous. His foundation’s salmon farm campaign quietly disappeared down the memory hole after its PCB claims were debunked. Moore highlighted another bit of greenwashing in a visit to Victoria last year. To the Editor, Re: Lotto scourge irritating, Letters online, April 12. I would like to provide some additional perspective to a recent letter to the editor regarding national lottery win rates as compared to provincial population figures. Every lottery ticket sold has the same chance of winning the jackpot, regardless of where it was purchased or the size of the jackpot. If you notice a larger number of winners in larger provinces it’s because more people there are buying lottery tickets, resulting in more winners. Nearly 30 years of tracking lottery sales and lottery jackpot wins in B.C. and across Canada confirm this. For example, since 1985, B.C. 6/49 players have won 12.2 per cent of all jackpots and purchased 12.17 per cent of all tickets sold in Canada. During this same time frame, Ontario and Quebec 6/49 players combined purchased 66.9 per cent of all tickets and have won or shared 67.8 per cent of

Lotto 6/49 and Lotto Max draws are managed by the Interprovincial Lottery Corporation, which consists of members from all the Canadian lottery jurisdictions. Winning numbers are randomly selected by a traditional RyoCatteau ball-drop machine and there are strict security measures in place for every draw. All draws are videotaped. An external auditor, an external trust officer and a draws manager also attend each draw. All Canadian lottery jurisdictions,

Refs lacking in NHL playoffs To the Editor, The NHL playoff refereeing this year is become the joke of the century. NHL hockey is fast becoming a game of just how badly players can injure an opponent. Call that sportsmanship? In the Canucks and Kings game last Sunday, the Kings’ captain Brown purposely slugged

Henrik Sedin in the jaw aiming to eliminate him from play. The dreamy referees, floating in la-la land all evening, never did give Brown a penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct. Hey, you refs, if you can’t do a better job refereeing a fair game then please stay home. No spectator enjoys watching any player get lambasted and seriously injured just to win the cup. To the Editor, It really seems to have come to a head (no pun intended) when a ‘star’ like Sidney Crosby drops the gloves for a headbutting. Sadly, I’m so sick of all the fighting that I don’t even watch hockey anymore. For me now, bring on The Boys Of Summer. It’s such a pleasure to watch grown men passionately consumed by their sport but in control of their emotions putting all their fight into diplaying the best their sport has to offer. Can’t get kids to listen? Parents need to take charge DANIELLE RENAUD Family Therapy

Dear Dr. Renaud: My kids don’t listen to me. I feel like I am yelling and threatening all the time. I don’t like myself and I’m sure

my kids don’t like me much either but it’s the only way I can get them to behave. I am so embarrassed in public when they don’t listen and act like brats. Help! Pulling Out My Hair Dear Pulling: First and foremost, you have to take

charge. Many parents these days have essentially given over all their power to their children. The kids are in charge and that needs to change. Parents aren’t actually parenting – that is the problem. You negotiate with your kids and spend a lot of time trying

to get them to agree. STOP IT. You also need to stop trying to be their friend and to ensure that they like you. That is not your job as a parent – parenting is. You need to set the rules, the structure and the routines. That is hard to do when you have let the kids drive the bus. My question is why? Why are you letting the youngest and most inexperienced

members of the family be in charge? Does that make sense? It doesn’t to me. YOU need to decide what is going to happen, when it is going to happen and why; period. This will take time and effort on your part but the payoff is worth it. Think about the amount of time you waste with poor or no planning – for example – getting kids to bed at night. How much time is

wasted negotiating bath and bedtime? If it is scheduled and planned it is easier to stick to. When the kids argue with you, just point to the schedule (that should be posted in a visible place) and remind them that it is on the schedule. You need to take time to make a clear schedule with input from the kids – that way they can’t complain later that “it’s not fair”. They have had input

and it is fair. You will be amazed how much nicer life can be and how much more time you find you have when you don’t waste it arguing, cajoling, negotiating and begging them to do things. Rivercorp CEO talks economy, teamwork SUSAN QUINN ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

Communities might compete for salmon fishing bragging rights, but they should be working as partners and not rivals when it comes to economic development, says Vic Goodman. Goodman heads up Rivercorp, Campbell River’s economic development organization. “Economic development is about creating the economic

tide that raises all the boats,” Goodman told two dozen members of the Alberni Valley Chamber of Commerce last week. Diversification has worked well for Campbell River, he said in outlining projects that city has pursued in sectors such as forestry, mining, green energy, transportation, agriculture, education, technology and tourism. Natural resources, First Nations culture and sports tourism all

play into the plan, he said. Diversification also takes focus, Goodman cautioned. “Success comes from figuring out what you do best and doing more of it,” he said. Competition is fierce when you think that with 200 companies in North America moving from one community to another each year, there are 15,000 communities vying to attract them. Rivercorp is a nonprofit entity owned by the City of Campbell

River, but they operate at arm’s length from the city, Goodman explained. This is preferable because you can’t have a city trying to attract the same business that it must also regulate, he said. Rivercorp’s mandate is to retain and expand existing businesses to retain a good quality of life. Goodman said a community needs to give its economic development department at least five years to develop.

It can be frustrating for the public because the majority of an economic development officer’s job is dealing in privacy—preventing that person from divulging information until deals are struck. “Economic development is something that takes time,” he said. “It takes commitment and it takes resources. But when you do it right you can build long-term stability in your community.”

Lions planting trees The Alberni Valley Lions Club invites the public to help plant 2,000 seedlings at Dry Creek Park on Saturday, April 28 as part of a centennial project. “This grew out of a request from the Lions International president,” said Tom Hall from the Port Alberni club. “It was his hope Lions around the world could plant a million trees. At last count the Lions are over six million and approaching seven million trees,” Hall said. The local Lions Club has committed to seeing that 100 seedlings per member are planted to commemorate the city’s centennial celebrations in 2012. The first phase of the

near the Alberni Valley Airport. Registration for the April 28 event is at 9 a.m. and an information session for all participants outlining planting procedure and areas will be at 9:30 a.m. Planting starts at 10 a.m. starting in the ravine area east of Dry Creek Park, above the horseshoe pits and continues up the ravine until all the seedlings are planted, Hall said. At noon a hotdog lunch will be provided courtesy of Safeway. Anyone registered in this event will receive a centennial certificate. For more information, please call Tom Hall at 250724-6163 or e-mail him at tthall@telus.net.

One arrested in daylight B&E WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

The arrest of an Alberni man for a recent theft and break and enter isn’t connected to a rash of home invasions involving seniors, RCMP Cpl. Jen Allan said. Alberni resident Channon Paul Coulter, 41, is charged with one count of break and enter, possession of break and enter tools, several counts of possession of stolen property and fleeing police. The charges stem from recent incidents including the theft of a purse from Walmart and a daylight break and enter. In the afternoon of April 11, a 73-year-old woman was working in the front

yard of her house on Leslie Avenue. When she went back in her house she noticed her purse on the stairs. She went inside and discovered that some of her belongings had been stolen. She called police, who got a description of the suspect from the woman’s neighbours. Police spotted Coulter, who matched the description, at Leslie Avenue and Johnston Road an hour later and arrested him in Roger Creek Park after a short chase. Coulter was found in possession of a cache of stolen property “...that linked him to this incident and numerous other thefts in the community,” the release noted. The nature of the incident, age of the

victim, and that the crime was committed during the day was similar to home invasion incidents involving other Alberni seniors, one of which resulted in the death of Mervin Hankins, 75. “Investigators are still trying to determine if he’s connected to those incidents,” Allan said. “He remains a person of interest.” No one was arrested in those incidents. Coulter is remanded into custody until his next court appearance on April 26.

Fun By The Numbers Like puzzles? Then you’ll love sudoku. This mindbending puzzle will have you hooked from the moment you square off, so sharpen your pencil and put your sudoku savvy to the test! Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must ďŹ ll each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can ďŹ gure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Tseshaht come to terms over Benson Is. PORT ALBERNI– On April 19, Tseshaht First Nation and Parks Canada signed a Memorandum of Agreement on cooperation concerning the planning and management of the Broken Group Islands that has been under

negotiation since 2007. The memorandum acknowledges the Tseshaht First Nation and the Maa-nulth Accord, and reaffirms Tseshaht-asserted aboriginal title in the Broken Group Islands. “Along with ensuring that Tseshaht has active

involvement in managing what goes on in the Broken Group Islands, says chief councillor Les Sam, “this agreement will enable Tseshaht to develop aboriginal tourism opportunities through the exposure of our culture to park visitors.

Parks Canada announced the closure of its campsite on Benson Island in May 2009. Tseshaht lauded this action and quickly saw the hire of a patrol person, Tseshaht member Ed Ross, to work directly in and oversee the

Broken Group Islands. In 2011, patrol people were renamed beach keepers, and more Tseshaht employees were hired. The Pacific Rim National Park Reserve was created in 1970 and is managed today as a national park reserve under

the Canada National Parks Act until the unresolved aboriginal claim to rights and title are resolved. The agreement was due to be signed between all parties on Thursday morning at the Tseshaht First Nation administration building.

Software glitch no laughing matter for photographer ‘Well, we wiped the internal hard drive and reinstalled Lion.’

NORMAN SILVERSTONE

Digi-pixels

I love Macs. If it was up to me, I would sell my wimpy HP Windows machine and just use the Mac computer. My machine is a 15” MacBook Pro that is sleek, sexy and fast with graphics that are unbelievable. My sexy Mac was merrily co-existing with me on Snow Leopard OS and we were having a grand old time. No viruses, no “blue screen of death”, no frozen screen, no being taken over by a bot, in fact nothing but good stuff. Then one day IT happened. The IT is Lion OS, the latest operating system from Apple. I went online to the Apple App store, chose Lion OS, paid by credit card ($29), and downloaded it direct from the website: no CD, no DVD, nothing tangible. Problems started immediately. My Mac would not come out of sleep mode, I had a frozen screen in Safari, it

would not shut down, and so on. I went online to see if there was something that I could do to repair the problems. I read that quite a few people had problems after downloading Lion.

Because I had purchased the three-year Apple warranty, I phoned Apple Tech support and screamed help! They walked me through updates, resets, repairs, and dumping library

preferences, all to no avail. The next step was to wipe my hard drive clean and re-install Lion. Pretty drastic, don’t you think? I phoned Apple and spoke to a supervisor

(Katie) about my concerns with wiping my hard drive. She checked with the tech and the senior tech, and they agreed that it had to be done. They said that there was some sort of conflict going on in my machine. Fortunately the MacBook Pro is running “Time Machine” (backup program) and is connected to an external hard drive. Well, we wiped the internal hard drive and re-installed Lion. It seemed to work fine. The next day I sat down at my computer, turned it on, clicked on a program and instantly went into freezing mode with the little ball turning and turning on the screen. I phoned the senior Apple tech, he said that I had to bring the machine to an Apple repair depot to be a “hands on” consultation. I phoned Mac Boutique (the only Apple certified

shop in Nanaimo),then we drove over and around to Nanaimo. I left the machine there, they were going to repair it and send it back to me no charge. Doug at Mac Boutique installed a second version of Lion (the first one was buggy), turned off automatic graphics switching (the Mac has two graphics cards, one better, one lesser and constantly switches depending on the program), installed all the updates and shipped it back to me. So far, so good. It seems that Lion OS is problematic if it is an update from Snow Leopard but fine if a new Mac is purchased with Lion OS installed. Thank heaven for the Apple three-year warranty and thank you Katie (supervisor in Texas) for being so wonderful and making things happen. Any questions? E-mail me at nsilverstone@telus. net. Local group makes pitch to buy Bulldogs franchise SUSAN QUINN ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

Port Alberni hockey fans have always embraced the Alberni Valley Bulldogs of the B.C. Hockey League as their own. Now a group of businesspeople wants to make it official by purchasing the team. The group, led by president Darren DeLuca and director Tom McEvay, has formed the Port Alberni Junior Hockey Society and plans to buy out the three shareholders: majority owner Okanagan Hockey Schools, the See Group of Companies and Dr. David Ness. Only they have just 45

days to raise enough money to do so. The junior hockey society scheduled a press conference for Thursday at noon, after the News’ deadline. McEvay said the fundraising campaign would be revealed at that time. The society must raise $500,000 by June 1 ($1 million in total) and the sale must be

approved by the BCHL before the non-profit entity could take over, he explained. McEvay stressed the sum is not the share price, but the amount of capital the society believes it needs to put the team on firm financial footing in order to move forward. Four other teams in the BCHL are operated by non-

profits: Powell River, Prince George, Merritt and Trail, McEvay said. “This is not a new thing.” McEvay said the formation of the society is a natural progression to wanting more community control—it is not a statement on previous ownership. “This initiative is not about poor ownership at all,” he said. A coaching change is not part of the society’s plans, he added. “We think this organization has the right people in place to move forward.” Continued / 34

Pitch n’ Putt

Today the word “golF is spelt with

a capital “F....it was the “F game! The ball sweep was in hot contention for the 18-hole division when we were told to give ourselves 10 extra points if our drive

landed on the “First cut of the “Fairway. At the end of 18 holes we subtracted the total number of our putts for the round from the total of our “F shots.

Hidden hole’s been held over KNOX COUPLAND Alberni Golf

Weather wise, last Sunday was pretty good for men’s club golfers at the Alberni Golf Course. No rain, no snow, no wind, in fact one of the players was complaining to Porchy about getting a minor sunburn! What a difference a week makes. Sunday, April 15 was an open day with an optional skins

game. Net skins were worth $28.75 each and gross skins $11 each. Vito Caldarulo was the big winner, collecting $55 for five gross skins. Net skins were won by Darrell Van OS, Gord Cutting, Vito Caldarulo, and Bob Matlock. Closest to the pin winners were Vito Caldarulo on No. 2 and No. 17, and Craig Acland on No. 13. The best second shot on No. 6 was posted by Craig Acland. Bob Matlock pocketed $29 for the charity closest

to the pin on No. 4. There was no winner on the hidden hole so it will be carried over for next week. Next Sunday is an open day with an optional $5 blind partner event. This will be a two-man format, but you won’t know who your partner is until you finish your round. Book your own tee times with your group starting at 7:30 a.m. Don’t forget to book your time by 9 a.m. Saturday.

Leona Fowler walked away uncontested with a total score of 107. Claudia Romaniuk came in second with 91 points. Janice Cross was the low gross scorer, carding a 91. Carol Hastings, Teresa Cutting and Leona Fowler all tied with their low net scores of 79. Get your name in on the list at the pro shop for your spring tuneups. Top, Toy run president Dave Wiwchar and Kenn Whiteman ham it up at the awards banquet. Right, Anne Fleming displays her small business award.

Toy run honoured for family work From/4 “They taught us how to dance and showed us how beautiful our culture was during a time when it wasn’t being recognized, and was even being shamed,” Robinson said. The tide is beginning to turn, she added. “As our people get stronger and more people begin listening to us, it’s changing.” The Tseshaht were the lone nominee in chamber’s

environmental award, which tribe councillor Erma Robinson accepted. The tribe was nominated for the expansion of its market, as well as its cleanup program, which includes elders’ yards and nets and boats along the Somass River. In the chamber’s other awards, Flandangles won in the small business category, while Western Forest Products took large

business honours. Entrepreneur of the year went to Handy Andy’s and the customer service award to Rick Paul from Double R Meats. McLean Mill beat out Lady Rose Marine Services for the tourism business award. RCMP Const. Boyd Pearson earned volunteer of the year honours for his efforts in the 2011 Pulling Together Canoe Journey. The Port Alberni

Toy Run won the Child and Family Friendly business award. The toy run has raised more than $1 million and given thousands of toys for local children’s programs and charities since 1984, association president David Wiwchar said. In the youth of the year category, the ADSS Civics 11 class, girls senior basketball team, wrestler Nolan Bodnar and AV Bulldogs player

Lars Hepso all won recognition. The chamber also presented its special recognition award to Port Alberni residents Bob Wagenvoort and Manfred Baron for their volunteer work at Literacy Alberni. Wagenvoort and Baron volunteer up to 60 hours of their time per week refurbishing old computers, some 90 of which have already benefited Alberni families living on low incomes. reporter@albernivalleynews.com

From / 28 Okanagan Hockey Schools president Andy Oakes said OHS has been approached on several occasions to sell its shares, and divesting itself of the Bulldogs has been considered. “It’s been something...we’ve entertained over the last number of months just due to the fact that us being in Penticton and Alberni Valley being so far away,” he said. The Port Alberni society’s bid has been the most serious, Oakes said. “I really feel this is a great move for the community. It’s a small, proud community that if they have the ownership and their team, that’s the key to long-term sustainability of that team in the Valley. (There’s) a lot of pride around that team.” McEvay and the rest of the society are banking on that pride to spur people

– Andy Oakes into helping. Nearly 40 volunteers have already stepped forward, and in a onehour meeting they raised close to $3,000. “This community has done some remarkable things in the past,” he said, citing the arena campaign, even the push to bring the Bulldogs to town. Then there was Kraft Hockeyville, West Coast General Hospital and the campaign to send retired wrestler Travis Cross to the Summer Olympics in Beijing, China, in 2008. “We’re excited.”
