For the past three years, the 100 Mile House Save-On-Foods store has encouraged South Cariboo Elementary School students to get involved with Earth Day (April 22). The children were asked to draw, paint, and print messages on brown paper bags to celebrate Earth Day. The individual decorated bags carry a very similar message: recycle, save the Earth and clean up the Earth. “Approximately 500 paper bags were distributed to different schools in the

area,” says Save-On-More manager Bruce Caspar. He adds the participating schools included Buffalo Creek, Horse Lake, 100 Mile House and Lac la Hache elementary schools. “The kids love doing it.” The store will be bagging groceries with the Earth Day bags this weekend (April 21-22), Caspar says, adding there have been instances where a child asks their parent or grandparent to have the groceries packed in “his or her” bag. Earth Day was first launched as an environmental awareness event in the

Brief power outage hits 108 Mile

A bird contacting power lines left 2,800 residents in 108 Mile Ranch and other areas north of 100 Mile House without power during the dinnertime period on April 14. BC Hydro recorded the power as being out of service from 5:48 to 6:55 p.m. in areas north of Exeter Station Road, and both west and southeast of central Cariboo Highway 97. Birds landing on power lines or transformers can trip fuses causing power outages. Invasive plant workshop offered Carole Rooney Free Press

The Cariboo Regional District (CRD) is hosting a hands-on workshop to assist area landowners in tackling invasive plant problems. Landowners, farmers, ranchers and others interested in controlling invasive plants can take advantage of the free, Weed and the Works Workshop to learn how much and when

to apply herbicide, safe handling methods, which products to use for your purposes and spray equipment calibration. The event will take place in Williams Lake on May 3 from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Pioneer Complex at 351 Hodgson Rd., as part of the CRD’s Invasive Plant Management program. CRD chair Al Richmond notes that while the regional

district loans equipment and distributes herbicides, most landowners realize they will be applying it themselves on their own property, so it is beneficial to have proper training. “We loan them backpacks and sprayers and things like that and then we train them how to use them all.” Many of the ranchers have the equipment of their own, he notes, so they are encouraged

Help emergency services help you when needed 9-1-1 and Emergency Services Dispatch Week was celebrated April 8-14, and Minister of Justice and Attorney General Shirley Bond says there are a number of things British Columbians can do to help these important emergency service workers. • Post addresses and phone numbers in large print on or near the phone to assist children and visitors if they need to call 9-1-1 in an emergency. • Ensure house numbers are clearly displayed, so emergency services can identify a residence quickly. • If you live off the roadway or have no mailbox, place an indicator sign at the end of your driveway to help mark your location. • Teach children how and when to place a 9-1-1 call and to emphasize 9-1-1 is strictly for emergencies only. “There’s some-

thing else we can all do, and it’s an easy but important reminder,” Bond says. Far too often 9-1-1 is called inadvertently or for non-critical care incidents, such as minor vehicle collisions or a noise

complaint, or to inquire about power outages and time changes. When we tie-up essential services unnecessarily, we potentially jeopardize others in a life-saving situation.”

Know your smart phone and avoid fraud The rise in popularity of smart phones with social media applications can put consumers at risk of fraud. The B.C Liberal government, Consumer Protection BC and the Better Business Bureau are teaming up to provide tips to help British Columbians get smart about their smart phone usage. According to a recent study by Javelin Research and Strategy, smart phone users are at greater risk of identity theft and fraud than average consumers. Sixty-two per cent of smart phone owners do not use a password to protect their home screens, 32 per cent save log-in information on their phones and a third of users do not have the most current security updates on their operating systems. Here are some tips to protect you and your family and become smart phone savvy: • Get the latest operating system for your phone so your security is up-todate. • Add a password to your phone for access, so if it is lost a person does not have access to your phone and your personal identifiers. • Password-protect everything, preferably with unique passwords for each social media service. • Look for “remote wiping” programs in the user manual of your smart phone so in case of loss you can remove and destroy all data from your phone from a remote location. • Check applica-

tions for geo-tagging that allow you to “tag” a photo or video with your current location. You can turn this “tagging” option off in applications if you feel uncomfortable broadcasting your location publically. • To avoid risk of financial loss, do not do your banking over public Wi-Fi networks. • Be sure all the apps you download come from legitimate vendors. Check user reviews and learn about what the application needs to access on your smart phone. Canadians are living longer and costs for the Old Age Security (OAS) are rising. On April 1, 2023 the Government of Canada plans to start raising the age of eligibility for OAS and the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) from 65 to 67.*

One-time HPV vaccine offered A one-time human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine program will be offered to women in British Columbia who were born in 1991, 1992 and 1993 to protect them from cervical cancer. HPV infections are the cause of almost all cases of cervical cancer. It’s estimated the vaccine can prevent up to 70 per cent of these cancers, as well as a number of pre-cancerous changes to the cervix that require treatment. The vaccine will be available for the women starting in mid-April 2012 and will be provided in a series of three doses over a six-month

period. These young women will be able to receive the vaccine from pharmacists, physicians, sexual health and youth clinics, post-secondary institution student health services and public health units. B.C. began offering the HPV vaccine to Grade 6 and 9 girls in 2008. Girls born in 1994 and later have been offered the vaccine in the schoolbased program. Until now, those born in previous years have been ineligible for the publicly funded vaccine. After studying the data on the vaccine and its costeffectiveness, the

Grants announced for local governments The provincial government’s annual instalments of the Strategic Community Investment Fund (SCIF) and Climate Action Revenue Incentive Program (CARIP) were recently announced. The District of 100 Mile House will receive a total of $202,890, which is earmarked for general coffers, from a $199,247 Small Community Grant from SCIF and $3,643 from the CARIP. The Small Community Grant is an unconditional grant to assist municipalities to provide basic services. The amount of funding is based on the base amount, population and property tax assessment values. The Cariboo Regional District will get $90,643, which it will place in general revenue, through a $79,189 Regional District Basic Grant and $11,454 from CARIP. The Regional District Basic Grant is an unconditional grant to assist regional districts with administration costs. The level of funding is based on regional district population in 50,000 resident increments. The CARIP refunds smaller local governments for carbon tax paid out for fuel, in grants conditional on their having signed on and adhered to the Climate Action Charter and reporting publicly on their progress. The grants are equivalent to 100 per cent of the carbon taxes those communities pay directly.

Sales expected to jump were 3,842 properties of all types available for purchase through the MLS compared to 4,165 at this time last year. “There is positive news for both buyers and sellers in the northern market,” says BCNREB board president Joni Brown. “A healthy increase in sales in most areas has resulted in lower inventory of properties, which is good news for sellers. At

the same time, buyers still have the benefit of historically low interest rates, suggesting it is a good time either to enter the market or to upgrade.” 100 Mile House and area have seen 38 (compared to 57 in 2011) properties of all types worth $6.7 million ($10.5 million) have been sold by realtors in the area since the beginning of the year. Locally knitted vests save lives Ken Alexander Free Press

Some 937 pneumonia vests were dedicated at the 100 Mile United Church on April 15, and during the past 16 years, more than 10,000 vests have been knitted and distributed. Sent through the Canadian Food for Children, these vests have been distributed in villages and hospitals from Central America to Haiti and from equatorial Africa to Sri Lanka. Although we think of the tropics as hot, church spokesperson Jack Witty says their nighttime temperatures cool sufficiently that infants and children often get pneumonia. “These vests can make the difference between life and death, as they give the extra bit of warmth needed to fend off respiratory infection.” Witty notes the project originally started in Merritt with the Roman Catholic Church and the Sisters of Charity. It arrived in 100 Mile House through St. Timothy’s Anglican Church in 1996. In 1998, women from the 100 Mile United Church volunteered to take over co-ordination of the project. Now, he says, there are knitters from all over the South Cariboo and beyond. Knitters in the Lower Mainland, who used to send vests to 100 Mile, now
