Independent MLA Bob Simpson went head-tohead with Minister of Jobs Tourism and Innovation Pat Bell over public consultation and timber supply shortages. During question period in the house Tuesday, Simpson questioned the minister on a report titled Midterm supply project. The “confidential draft” was mistakenly made public on the Internet and immediately pulled after Simpson brought up its content. “The current mountain pine beetle epidemic in interior British Columbia
will result in a drastic decrease in timber supply in some areas, with potential for significant negative economic and social effects to the forest industry and forestry-dependent communities,” the report reads. “These communities have expressed concerns over the short and mediumterm sustainability of their communities as a consequence of the projected timber supply decline. These concerns are evidenced by the UBCM resolution at the 2010 Annual Convention requesting government attention to the matter.” The 24-page report analyzes four timber supply
areas: Quesnel, Williams Lake, Prince George and Lakes. For Quesnel and Prince George it states: “Under current lumber market conditions, it is uneconomical to harvest dead pine located at long haul distances from the mills. Licencees have indicated that the economic supply of dead pine varies from 1.5 years in Quesnel TSA to about 5 years in the Prince George TSA.” That means, Simpson said, under current market conditions and current land use plans “we have 1.5 years before we start to see mill closures.” Which is why, he added,
government needs to make the report public and ensure communities are equipped to deal with a “worse case scenario.” “Quesnel has very little time to plan,” he said. “Government needs to get the conversation started asap.” During question period Simpson also questioned when the minister and government planned on revealing to the public options government is considering to increase midterm timber supply in mountain pine beetleimpacted areas. “There is a lot of work going on,” Bell replied. “It is in the broader

mountain pine beetle region. We are likely a month or two away from having a broader public discussion. “I think that dialogue is important and it is a dialogue that we’ll be encouraging as we move into the summer months.” Simpson continued to push for public consultation, highlighting the report’s prediction of 1.5 years of commercial timber left and the loss of “1,600 jobs if mitigation measures are not made.” Bell said Simpson’s suggestion “that government is not interested in consulting is completely inaccurate.”

Abbott fields questions AUTUMN MacDONALD Observer Reporter Teachers questioned him on everything from Bill 22 to the appointment of Charles Jago as mediator. Last Thursday, Minister of Education George Abbott met with Gold Pan teachers, fielded questions and toured the district. Primary concern rested with Bill 22 and the usage of language. “In light of the fact that Bill 22 strips many items from collective agreements that were mutually agreed upon over many years by teachers and their employers – why was this necessary?” one teacher asked. Abbott said Bill 22 addresses different language in collective agreements across the
province, accounts for “fair posting and fillings and addresses more more consistent evaluation.” Many teachers raised concerns over the appointment of Charles Jago as the mediator in the ongoing dispute. When Jago was first appointed in April British Columbia Teachers Federation president Susan Lambert wrote Jago, urging him to withdraw. The BCTF has expressed concern over Jago’s ability to be “unbiased.” Teachers also commented on “increasing workloads, lack of supports, class size and students requiring extra attention.” Class size and composition have been major bargaining issues since the beginning of
the teacher’s dispute. The BCTF is looking for class size limits and composition limits in their contract. BCTF and the BC Public School Employers’ Association (BCPSEA) were in a mediation process until late into the evening Tuesday in an effort to reach agreement on issuing of official report cards in this transition period post-strike and prior to the final report cards in June. Although the BCTF agreed to considerable movement in its position, the employer remained inflexible. Therefore, a resolution was not reached. As of press time no decision had been rendered. Teachers throughout the province continue Thursday and Friday

on the BCTF action plan and resistance to Bill 22. Results to be announced early Friday morning. The BCTF also has an application to quash the appointment of Charles Jago as mediator under Bill 22. The attorney-general has challenged the jurisdiction of the Labour Relations Board to quash the appointment. Written submissions have been completed at the LRB, no decision as of press time.

Town halls provide feedback Feedback was on the agenda during a series of town halls, hosted by Independent MLA Bob Simpson. “It’s important for constituents to be able to raise regional issues with me so that I can champion them in the Legislature,” Simpson said. “This recent break gave me an opportunity to touch base with local residents about what they would like to see from their government.” Thirty members of the Wells community met to discuss a wide range of local and provincial issues, including arts and culture funding,
rural Internet access, mining and forestry activities and childcare. “There has been a mini baby boom in Wells and parents are looking for increased community assistance to help raise children in the district,” Simpson said. “My staff and I will be looking for potential support from the provincial government, including making use of StrongStart BC’s learning programs and providing training for daycare personnel.” Sixty residents attended the town hall at the Quesnel Seniors’ Centre
last week. Issues raised by the public included seniors’ care, the long-term viability of the local forest industry, the Northern Gateway Project, and cost of living concerns in the community. “Many folks are reaching a critical point in their dayto-day lives. They’re seeing rising costs at the gas pump, in the grocery store, and through increasing ICBC and BC Hydro rates and MSP premiums,” Simpson said. “Seniors on fixed incomes are concerned about affordability, as are young families.
The provincial government must consider expanding support networks for the most vulnerable in our society, while providing better management of crown corporations and agencies so rates are more consistent and reasonable.” Horsefly residents addressed a number of region–specific issues, including the proposed community forest, required upgrades to the

OPINIONS Free the weed
T
ax it, regulate it and move on. The issue of legalizing marijuana is sparking debate across the province after former U.S. federal prosecutor, John McKay voiced his support of decriminalizing the green stuff. “Mexican drug cartels, dangerous gangs operating both in the United States and Canada, are all profiting from the black market that’s created by our failed policy,” McKay said at a press conference in Vancouver, Wednesday. McKay, who once prosecuted “Prince of Pot” Marc Emery said he favours taxing and regulation, pointing to Initiative 502, a Washington State measure that would work to regulate marijuana production and earmark revenues. Think gaming funds and how they’re allocated now. Weed sales could top-up healthcare costs, substance abuse programs, education – the list is endless. Not to mention freeing up RCMP, unclogging the court system and reducing gang violence. Former attorney generals Geoff Plant, Ujjal Dosangjh, Graeme Bowbrick and Colin Gabelmann have also added their voice to the pro-legalize chorus. The foursome signed a letter to Premier Christy Clark calling on the taxing and regulation of B.C. bud. “As former B.C. attorneys general, we are fully aware that British Columbia lost its war against the marijuana industry many years ago,” the letter reads. “The case demonstrating the failure and harms of marijuana prohibition is airtight. The evidence? Massive profits for organized crime, widespread gang violence, easy access to illegal cannabis for our youth, reduced community safety, and significant – and escalating – costs to taxpayers.” It’s clear current policy is not working, now it’s up to politicians to listen to these collective voices for change and get on with it. –Autumn MacDonald, Observer
Canada’s Greatest Know It All I
already wrote my column earlier this week and it was brilliant. The problem was, I wrote it in my head while I was sleeping and when I woke up I forgot my incredibly detailed dream within seconds. This is why I have a pen and paper on my nightstand – so I can immediately capture these subconscious ideas before they fly out of my head. But even if I didn’t have a stack of magazines covering my notebook this time, I wouldn’t have been able to write it down quickly enough. It was as if the thoughts in my brain wanted to get away from me as quickly as possible. Why they were in such a hurry to disappear on this occasion, I’m not sure. Other times the thoughts linger around long enough for me to jot down a few words, which helps tremendously.
Lori Welbourne
On A Brighter Note That is until it’s time to look at the chicken scratch later and try to decipher what it actually says. I could wallpaper my office with all the little pieces of paper I’ve collected over the years with words I wrote, but couldn’t figure out what they actually said. I don’t just do this when I’m half asleep either, it often happens when I’m awake. A great thought might pop in my head or my kids might say some nugget of gold I never want to forget, so I’ll quickly grab a pen and write it down. But if I don’t write it down legibly I could be left feeling
we’ll never know. But soon we’ll know if my application was accepted for Canada’s Greatest KnowIt-All, a reality TV show I couldn’t be less suited for. “My husband would be good on a program like that,” I told my friend when he suggested I send in an application video. “He watches tons of shows on the Discovery Channel and Knowledge Network and always wins any trivia game he plays. Next to him, I know nothing.” I made a video application displaying exactly that and sent it in. I had to. It was a “brilliant” idea that came to me from an incredibly detailed dream that actually stuck around long enough for me to write it down. Legibly. To watch my silly application for Discovery Channel, please visit LoriWelbourne.com. Lori Welbourne is a Black Press columnist, www. onabrighternote.ca.

like I just let go of a million dollar idea. It’s similar to that feeling you get when you find an expired lotto ticket. Last week I discovered an old wallet with a bunch of expired lottery tickets and scratch cards. I didn’t realize they were dead until I got them checked, but each and every one of them was gonzo. What a strange feeling to hold a pile of tickets that may or may not have been winners. I don’t imagine my husband would ever allow that to happen. He’d understand that lottery tickets expire and if you don’t transfer them to your new wallet when you first get it, chances are they’ll be forgotten until it’s too late. “You should always check them right away,” he’d probably say if I told him. “Maybe that unclaimed prize of ten million was in there the whole time, but now we’ll never know.” And he’d be right, now

When our mom died our whole family (two brothers, my sister, in laws and my cousin and nieces and nephews) were all at the hospital. We stood in a hallway to grieve for our mom as
there was no other place for us. We felt that our mom was not treated with dignity and wished for a better place for her to spend her last days. She deserved better. The next year, my husband’s mother was diagnosed with cancer and died in a hospital in Mission, B.C. The Mission hospital had a separate room for her with an extra bed for family members and plenty of chairs for all of us. There was another room that had a kitchen and living area for the family when they were not with my husband’s mother.
My husband and his brothers and families all had a chance to say a proper good bye to his mom. This was a much better outcome than the year before. These are the reasons why I became involved with and support the Quesnel and District Hospice Palliative Care Association. • I wanted there to be grief support in Quesnel for people who did not have the support our family had when our son died. • I wanted there to be a place in Quesnel for people to die in dignity
surrounded by their family and friends. • I wanted there to be a place in Quesnel for people to die with their family around them that was homey and comfortable. The Quesnel and District Hospice Palliative Care Association supports families living with a life threatening illness from the beginning of their illness through the grief process. They have amazing volunteers who sit with the patients and help give support to the families. They provide both individual and group grief support to any and all
who request it. Quesnel has a Hospice Unit at Dunrovin Park Lodge which is homey and comfortable for people to die in dignity surrounded by their family and friends. Please come out and support the ongoing services of the association at the 11th annual Hike for Hospice on Sunday May 6th at Lebourdais Park. Registration begins at 12 noon and the Hike begins at 1p.m. Remember all funds raised in Quesnel, stay in Quesnel. Thank you Judy Monych Quesnel

Premier Christy Clark announces funding for four-laning 30 kilometres more of highway between Prince George and Cache Creek, beginning this summer. DeLynda Pilon photo
Phase II for Connector announced DeLYNDA PILON Prince George Free Press Phase two of the Cariboo Connector expansion is ready to go forward, with the province set to four-lane 30 kilometres more of highway between Prince George and Cache Creek, beginning this summer. Premier Christy Clark made the announcement during her visit to the city on Friday, stopping at the Yellowhead Road and Bridge maintenance yard on the Hart, along with several other dignitaries including Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure, Blair Lekstrom, following a morning that included a cabinet meeting since so many members of the Liberal caucus were in Prince George. Clark likened the provincial government’s B.C. Jobs Plan to a body. The heart of the plan is families, the lungs is the economy and the arteries are the province’s highways. “We know how important they are to livelihoods,” she said. So the government has committed $200 million over the next five years for phase two of the Cariboo Connector project, part of the $700 million, also committed over the next five years, to increase capacity on provincial
highways and railways. Ensuring goods get to market and stimulating the economy will mean jobs for residents for generations, she said. “We want them for our kids. We want them for our grandkids. We want to have jobs for a long time,” she said. She added this means ensuring the North is working and thriving.
“Every part of this province, including my family, depends on the North,” Clark said. Prince George Mackenzie MLA Pat Bell, formerly a professional driver, added the changes would not only help get goods to market but further improve the safety of the roads, which, he said, were challenging in the 1990s. “This investment
and previous investments make the transportation system more efficient,” he said. Kevin Higgins, president of Yellowhead Road and Bridge, and representing the B.C. Road Builders and Heavy Construction Association, said the announcement translates to 1,000 jobs during the construction stage of the project. He agreed the
improvements will make for safer roads and easier transport of goods, leading to a thriving economy. “Our ancestors got it, we get it and I’m pleased to say this government gets it too. B.C. is all about transportation,” he said. The premier said the plan is to start four-laning the piece from the Old Cariboo Hwy. to Sintich Rd. this year.

LAWN & GARDEN 2012’s perennial of the year
P
erennial of the Year for 2012 is Brunnera macrophylla ‘Jack Frost’. The winning plant must fill the criteria set out by the Perennial Plant Association. First, it must suitably grow in a wide range of climatic conditions. Lucky for us Brunnera ‘Jack Frost’ will grow in zone 3. It does well in partial to full shade, preferring a moist soil . Add some organic matter such as compost or peat moss to your soil at planting time. Top dressing with a couple of inches of bark mulch or old leaves to retain moisture around the plant. Once established, Brunnera is drought tolerant. Plants with silver foliage are tough and thrive in drought, heat and cold. The Perennial of the Year must be relatively pest and disease resistant. Neither slugs nor deer seem to be attracted to Brunnera. Apparently the deer don’t like the rough leaf texture. Just remove any tattered leaves and old flower stems throughout the growing season.
They aren’t invasive and can be easily divided every 3 years in the spring. The winner must also possess multiple seasons of ornamental interest and be readily available to gardeners. I’m going to be totally honest here and admit that I’m not the biggest fan of silvery spotted foliage. It reminds me of a virus riddled mutant plant! I’m sorry if I have offended any of you, but really, Pulmalaria? I rest my case. But I do like ‘Jack Frost’. The heart shaped leaves are more silver than green. Sprays of delicate forget-me-not blue flowers appear in spring and seem to hang around for long time. The big bright foliage brightens up any shady spot from spring to fall. Use this plant in the front of the shady border or in a container. It grows in a tidy mound 45cm x 45cm. It can be easily combined with other shade loving plants. The colour silver, links green and white in the garden creating a cool palette. see PAGE A14

LAWN & GARDEN Match up shade-loving Brunera ‘Jack Frost’ with white impatiens and hostas from A13 For a simple and calming planting combination, use the green ruffled foliage of Hosta sieboldiana ‘Elegans’ in the background, ‘Jack Frost’ in the middle and white impatiens in front. Too subdued for you? Instead of the white impatiens, use hot pink or a mix. In a container, plant ‘Jack Frost’ alongside the new white ‘Baby Wings’ begonia which is also heat tolerant and can grow in either sun or shade. I’m a huge fan of the pink Baby Wings begonia. It has to be one of the best annual per-
formers out there, so nice to have another colour. The Hosta of the Year is ‘Liberty’. I will try to squeeze this one into my garden. The thick dark green leaves are edged with a beautiful wide golden yellow border. The 100cm semi-upright clump makes quite a statement in the landscape. It is a sport of ‘Sagae’ and if it is like its parent plant it will be a winner. Thanks go out to Joan Murphy for putting me onto ‘Sagae’. oice teacher and co-director of Quesnel Festival of the Performing Arts of vocal and choral discipline Cathy Heinzelman said the QFPA adjudicators offer students exactly what they need to hear. “They are just at the right age to take the information they receive and use it for the rest of their life,” Heinzelman said. International professional singer Katherine van Kampen not only assessed the skills of entrants in the QFPA, but she also provided workshops to help students improve their singing abilities.
“I see my role as encouraging young talent,” she said. “My job is to light the spark and make them believe in the dream, give them permission to dream bigger and higher, to really go for it. “It’s my privilege to do that.” This year, the QFPA welcomed several choirs to the festival and due to the number of students involved, van Kampen travelled to the venues rather than bringing all the students to one location. Heinzelman was pleased with the number of school choir involved and says her co-director role allows her to encourage and expand the choral discipline. Last Friday, individual
students in the vocal section spent one-on-one time with the adjudicator and one student Sophia Traber appreciated the depth of the workshop coaching. “What a voice she has,” Traber said. “You hear her and want to reach that level.” Traber admitted she felt slightly off during her performance and was glad van Kampen pushed her beyond the level she was singing. As a student of Heinzelman, Traber said they work on all the techniques the adjudicator explored with her, but loved how much detail van Kampen brought to the workshop. Heinzelman has been teaching voice for about 14 years and loves
teaching the students new songs and watching them develop their talent. She said during the time her own children were taking singing lessons, she found herself driving long distances for lessons after local teachers moved away and realized voice teachers were needed in Quesnel. “The children’s teacher encouraged me to go for my teaching accreditation,” she said. One of many concerns as she embarked on was, although an accomplished pianist, Heinzelman worried she couldn’t play fast enough to accompany her students. “Not being able to play piano fast enough has allowed for the inclusion of many different accompanists
and that has enriched the students’ experience,” she said. “Singers need to take ownership of their music and learn to give clear direction to the accompanist. The students need to be the driver.” Many of Heinzelman’s students are currently preparing for exams and she makes sure they’re as ready as possible. “They need to have performed their pieces before festival adjudication and combined with the festival experience, that will be part of their exam prep. “With this type of adjudication, it really helps the students understand and better perform during exams.” She added with a professional adjudicator,

it’s a reassurance they are working on the right repertoire and that she’s not pushing students too far. In fact, she may be considered a little soft. Heinzelman is no stranger to studying and improving her own voice skills. “With the continued support of family and friends I’m ready to complete my associate degree in Conservatory Canada which is the accreditation I’ve been working towards for 15 years.” With festival now complete, several local students in dance, vocal, piano, speech and dramatic arts were selected by adjudicators to compete in the provincial festival at the end of May.

2nd Annual Monster Run is ready for sign ups Maybe this is your year to tackle the Monster Run? Yes, Stew Castle has been working very hard all winter long, creating another amazing longdistance, endurance motorcycle event July 13 – 14. As with last year’s inaugural run, this year’s run begins in Quesnel, with riders heading out to Prince George, Jasper, down to Lake Louise, cut over to Edgewater, Golden, taking in Vernon and Kelowna, then back up to Merritt, Kamloops, over to Cache Creek then the home run back to Quesnel. In case you were wondering, that’s 1,900 km, about 100 km more than last year and yes, the deadline is to complete in 30 hours, or should you really feel the exhiliaration of the challenge, try to complete the route in 24 hours and qualify for the Iron Butt Recognition. But this isn’t just a great tour of B.C., the Monster Run is dedicated to raising funds for
New patch for the 2012 Monster Run. muscular dystrophy, a debilitating disease which Leonard Yalowega, one of Castle’s best friends, is afflicted with. Last year’s run raised more than $8,000 for Muscular Dystrophy Canada, far exceeding organizers’ expectation and Castle hopes to duplicate that this year. In that first run last year, Rhonda McCabe was the only woman to accept the challenge of the 1,825-km run. When she slid her leg over her Kawasaki Vulcan Custom motorcycle, she had no idea what she was about to face. “You feel every emotion on the run, I had no idea what the ride would be like,” she said. She described pounding rain for
Contributed image
about a quarter of the ride. “Then my rainsoaked leathers froze around Princton,” she said with a big grin. “But I was committed to the run, I was the only woman on the run and quitting wasn’t an option. “Despite everything, you’re driving down the road with a huge smile on your face.” She admitted she would have fared better if she had put her pride aside and donned her rain gear earlier. Castle described some of the stressors on a long-distance run including wildlife, getting lost, having more stops than anticipated and the wear-and-tear on the human body to cover the distance in 30 hours.
“I even got a speeding ticket near Vernon,” McCabe said. “I figured it would be totally doable in the time alotted but so many factors affect the ride.” To her credit, McCabe is totally looking forward to this year’s ride, in fact, her goal is to make the Iron Butt qualifer 1,610 km in 24 hours. “Having done the ride, talked about the ride and bragged about the ride, many of the fears are dispelled,” she said. “We who have ridden in the run can now help others prepare.” But McCabe and Castle, as well other riders already committed to the Run, are hoping for good weather, which doesn’t necessarily mean rain-free, just not the torrential downpour they experienced last year and invite other riders to download a pledge sheet (or contact Castle at, 250-983-6325, e-mail ular@shaw.ca or visit quesnelbiker.com) and sign up for this year’s Monster Run. Castle was emphatic
the Monster Run’s primary concern is safety of the riders. “Safety is paramount. This is an endurance ride, not a race,” he said. “There are about 6 – 7 hours built into the run time so people are encouraged to take what breaks they feel they need.” Last year’s run saw two of the 11 riders complete the run in the required 24 hours and earned their Iron Butt qualification. Every rider completed the run with no casulties, despite some slower rides.

The Wildfire gearing up for their first year in the Prince George Senior Lacrosse Association. Jonas Gagnon photo
PGSLA spreading like wildfire JONAS GAGNON Observer Report A league expansion is bringing senior level lacrosse to Quesnel. The expansion of the Prince George Lacrosse Association has increased the opportunity for growth in lacrosse for players and fans alike with the addition of the Quesnel team. The new team draws inspiration for the name from its junior level counterpart, the Crossfire. Staying with the fire theme, the new team has been dubbed the Wildfire. The move started with successful exhibition games played between Quesnel and Prince George teams for two years previous. Then, last year, the league began to expand outwards, starting with MacKenzie. This year the league continued the growth, only this time to the south. With 22 players in the provi-
sional roster, the team is coming together well. Though the team could use a few more players team capitain, Pat Gibbs said. The focus right now is to build a core of players who will solidify the team and draw more players in, Gibbs said. He is confident in the current team’s ability to score and be competitive, he said. With the core tentatively in place, Lisa Scott, president of the Quesnel Lacrosse Association, is optimistic about the season. “I anticipate great things this year,” she said. Not only is she impressed with the way the team is coming together, but is also convinced the fans will be there to support the newly–fledged team. With around 200 fans coming to the home-team exhibition games in years past, she has good reason to believe there are lacrosse fans in the city who will back the team.
“I expect 300-500 fans,” Scott said. The real winners of the move though, are the players themselves. Previously any acolytes of the sport were cut off at sixteen as the city had nothing to offer them by way of an organized team. Now those kids will jump right into senior lacrosse, allowing for growth in the lacrosse community. There are still gaps in lacrosse leagues, though Scott is happy with the direction the league is going here in the north. “It’s a step in the right direction,” Scott said. Because of the still–present gaps between lacrosse leagues, the age range for the current team spreads from 17 all the way up to 48. “There’s not just enough players in the North here, so we’ve just combined leagues,” Scott said.
Scott is convinced the new team will help grow the number of players, however, citing the bump in the players in Mackenzie when the senior team there started next year. The gap is similar to the one Prince George faces Scott said. Quesnel is now one of the lucky ones though, despite the gap in league coverage. Williams Lake still sits outside any league, forcing dedicated players to travel to play. That’s just what a couple of players from Williams Lake have done. Two players, one of whom is the goalie, made the commitment to come up to Quesnel regularly to be part of the Wildfire. The players here are very thankful to Scott for the two years of work she put in to get the team here. “Without her this, wouldn’t happen,” Gibbs said. “She doesn’t get enough thanks.”
The gap shows in the players skill levels as well. “We have some brand new players on that have never played before,” Scott said. She also added that some of the players have participated in everything from minor to junior and now senior leagues. The Wildfire will play eight home games at the Twin Arenas over the course of the regular season. The majority, six, of the games will be on Thursday nights, but the final two will be a double header on the weekend. The Wildfire is still looking for a major sponsor to pay for equipment like jerseys. Their first game will be against the PX Pub Bandits on April 26 at 8 p.m. The minor lacrosse league Quesnel Crossfire start their season with an exhibition game on April 28, against Vanderhoof. League play starts the first weekend of May.

Blocked at nationals JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter The U19 ringette nationals turned out to be a learning experience for a very young northern B.C. team. “Our girls, they’re learning and they played very well,” assistant coach, Melinda Wilson, said. The team’s two and six record tells a misleading story for the tournament. Struggling against unknown refs and different gameplay the girls kept in each game, only letting one game run away from them Wilson said. The northern girls played a mix of
teams, from their counterparts here in B.C. to teams from Quebec, though not as diverse a group in years past because of the new set up of the tournament. In the end though, it was the other B.C. team that knocked the Northerners out of contention. Both teams were fighting to stay alive in the tournament in the mini game, which ended going into OT. “We ended up losing in sudden death to the other B.C. team and went on to the consolation round,” Wilson said. The team had problems with the different style of play

was used to and as a result the girls had problems with penalties and spent too much time in the box, costing them points and, in some cases, games. See PAGE A27

Experience gained eligibility for six of the girls. These girls were competing against girls quite a few years older. The majority of the other teams were competing with grade 12 girls, usually the second year of eligibility for U19, or even first-year university age girls, the final year of eligibility Wilson said. The lack of experience wasn’t just age–related, the northern B.C. team had a hard time practicing together as a team, and played few games as a team. The team drew players from all over northwestern B.C. which created a hurdle for the team to jump every time they wanted to practice. “You can’t get together for a practice,” a mother of one of the players, Lorrie Newman, said. Though most of the girls on the team are from Quesnel and Prince George, players from as far away as Terrace and Houston are also on the team. They are planning to start summer training this year in Prince George Wilson said. With hard work over the summer and a little more bonding next year is looking good for the team.

from A24 “We played one whole period three on five. That was when we lost,” Wilson said. The refs weren’t the only change though, the teams from the east played a different game from which the girls were accustomed. The teams played a different game from offense to defense, which took some getting used to for the young team who had a difficult time getting out of their B.C. style rut. The more experienced teams from out east, however had the experience to change on the fly to deal with regional differences. “You could see it in the game,” Wilson said. “They would watch and within a couple minutes they would switch up their style. And if we figured them out, like their defence, they would switch it up again,” said Wilson. The youth of the team means this will be the first of many chances at the nationals. Of the sixteen girls who went to Burnaby, seven were eligible to skate in the younger, U16 league, while it was the first year of U19

Junice (June) Marie Park nee Stephenson
June 24, 1935 - April 15, 2012 After a long battle with C.O.P.D. and Cancer, Mom passed away peacefully in the Quesnel Hospice. Mom was born in Smeaton, Sask, 10 minutes before her twin sister Janice, to Heber and Leilah Stephenson. She had three younger brothers, Jim (Louise) and Jerry (also twins) and Keith (Jeanette). She was predeceased by her parents and sister Janice (Terry) Eastman, brother Jerry Stephenson and husband Larry Park. Mom had five children, Jack Clark, Norman (Lillian) Clark, Janice (Wally) McKinney, Brenda Sieppert and Donald Clark. She had 11 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Mom loved people. We always had a houseful of family or friends. We’d sit around drinking coffee, shooting the...well you know. Mom may have only had five children, but she had hundreds whom she considered her kids. She always had an open heart and open mind, judging others was never her thing. When they were younger Grandpa moved them from Sask. to B.C. They lived in Vancouver for a few years then moved to Penticton. In 1974 Mom and Dad thought a
move to Prince George would be the thing to do. We met some amazing people there that became a surrogate family to us. In 1986 Mom came to live with Wally and I. She loved Quesnel, “It’s the people here,” she would always say. Again we became part of a new surrogate family, everybody that knew her called her Ma or Mom. Mom had a sharp wit, always called a spade a spade. She’d give you her honest opinion, she loved a good joke. If you got out of line she’d tell you to “Cut the crap.” She loved to watch softball and baseball. Her favourite team was the Cleveland Indians. She loved bird watching, hummingbirds were her favourite. Spring was her favourite time of year cause it brought back all her favourite flowers... lilacs, daffodils, tulips and crocuses. She loved stuffed animals. She was always curious about what each new day would bring. Mom passed away peacefully at the age of 76. We have a new angel in heaven and her name is June. We thank our friends for taking care of us while we took care of mom. Thank you to all the wonderful nurses in the hospital and in the hos-
pice for their compassion and care of mom. Thank you to Captain Jim and his wife Deb for their compassion and caring, also their spiritual guidance. Thank you to Christopher from Claytons for everything, to the ambulance personnel, Dr. Evans and the nurses with the cancer unit, to Palliative care team and home care nursing, especially Jody for working so hard to make mom comfortable and helping us with the tools and equipment to keep mom home as long as we did, to Dr. Morne Smitt and the Fraserview staff and to Lorna Wasmuth of Cherished Moments Home Care Services for taking such wonderful care of mom. In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to Crooked Leg Ranch. A service officiated by Captain Jim of the Salvation Army will be held Saturday, April 21 at 3:00 pm at Clayton’s Funeral Home followed by a tea at the Quesnel and District Rec Centre.

Five quick tips to make breakfast more fun W
e have heard many times that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but sometimes it can be forgotten in the morning rush. Take a look at these five tips to incorporate some quality family time into your breakfast. Get artistic Take your piece of toast from food to art by cutting it into fun shapes. Spread Nutella on a slice of whole grain bread and cut it into any shape you want with a cookie cutter. Decorate with fruit like berries, grapes or sliced banana. Make it a balanced breakfast by serving with a glass of 2% milk. Make a breakfast bar Plan it with choices and different toppings. Yogurt is a good start for breakfast sundaes, or whole grain pitas make a nice base for breakfast
pizzas. Bar items can be anything you or your kids choose—berries, sliced grapes, shredded cheese and nuts are just a few suggestions. Make it educational and fun by giving a gold star to any child that can incorporate all four food groups. Launch a full day of fun On weekends use breakfast as a chance to talk about a wish-list of activities for the day. It can be a brainstorming session where everyone can share their favourite ideas to make a plan. Give them ‘happy food’ It is all about the presentation. If your kids don’t like eating breakfast, make it look more appealing. Use a banana as a mouth, cut a boiled egg in half for two eyes, use a grape as the nose and cut a slice of toast spread with a tablespoon of Nutella in half to make two big ears.
Have a picnic Breakfast doesn’t always need to be eaten at a table. To create variety, plan a picnic—pack up a hamper and blanket then head outside to your favourite park, or even your backyard. Make skewers by cutting a whole grain sandwich and fruit into fun shapes and then alternate putting them onto a skewer. Pair it with a glass of milk for a balanced breakfast that fits perfectly in your hamper. If it rains you don’t have to cancel—lay down a blanket in your living room and have an indoor picnic. To help make breakfast fun, Nutella is giving away bread cutters. Pick up a jar to find out how you can get your gift while supplies last—visit or go to www.facebook.com/ TheBreakfastTable to find out more. www.newscanada.com
Taste sensation sausage, asiago stuffed mushrooms
S
tuffed mushrooms are a classic, and conjure up culinary nostalgia. If you are running to and from various parties or hosting one of your own, here is an appetizer that will get rave reviews. These stuffed mushrooms will disappear in a flash, so bring lots. I really loved the textures here: the crunchy cheesy topping, into the creamy, spicy filling and meatiness of the mushroom. Fun to eat, and bursting with flavour. The fennel and rosemary are perfect compliments to the spicy sausage - use the best quality you can find, it makes a difference. Roasting mushrooms in balsamic vinegar first really adds a tart/sweet factor, and rids the mushroom of extra juices. This appetizer will no doubt rock your party of 1 or 21. Sausage & Asiago Stuffed
Mushrooms with Balsamic Glaze Preparation Time: 20 mins. Cooking Time: 1 hrs. 15 mins. 20 large mushrooms, cleaned with stem removed and saved for later use2 links Italian sausage 1 tsp dried rosemary or 2 tsp fresh, finely chopped1 tsp dried fennel seed 1 onion, diced small 2 cloves garlic, minced 4 oz (120grams) cream cheese 3 oz (90grams) Asiago cheese, grated 3 tbsp olive oil 3 tbsp balsamic vinegar salt and pepper In a large bowl, toss the mushrooms with the balsamic vinegar and 3 tbsp olive oil, salt and pepper. Place onto a parchment lined cookie sheet and place in a preheated 350 degree oven for about 30 min.
Stir once or twice. Remove from oven. Meanwhile, in a large skillet, over medium high heat, squeeze the sausage meat out of the casing and cook until no longer pink, breaking it apart with the back of a spoon. You want it fairly crumbly and in small pieces. Stir in onions and garlic and spices, and cook a few minutes longer, until onion is softened. (If you find that your sausage filling is too greasy, drain it on paper towel first before adding the cheese.) Remove from heat and place into a bowl, along with the cheeses (save some of the Asiago for topping). Stir well to combine. Take a teaspoon and fill each mushroom cap. Sprinkle with remaining Asiago. Bake at 375degree for about 30-40 minutes, until golden. Can easily be doubled if feeding a large crowd. -NC
