Richmond Mounties were called around 1:10 p.m. Wednesday to a report of shots fired, and found a man’s slumped body on the sidewalk next to the intersection of Ferndale Road and Katsura Street, one block south east of Garden City and Westminster Highway. The victim was wearing what appears to be a black Affliction-style T-shirt at the time of his death. The new family-oriented densely populated neighbourhood where the brazen shooting occurred is peppered by high-rises, four-storey condos and townhouses. Sgt. Jennifer Pound, of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team, said police responded to the scene and found the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Police had not released

the man’s name at press time as they were still trying to contact the victim’s immediate family. A witness told The Richmond Review that he was watching the Chelsea and Barcelona Champions League soccer match when he “heard two bangs about 1 to 1:30 p.m.” “It was like a car tire exploding,” he said. His apartment overlooks the tennis courts that are

kitty-corner to the crime scene. “I didn’t relate it to anything, but (later) I saw the investigation going on.” A large yellow tarp covered the body of the male victim on the sidewalk directly adjacent to the intersection that’s the focus of the investigation. The man’s footwear could be seen poking out from underneath the tarp, and a police dog with a han-

dler was sniffing what was underneath. The entire scene remained cordoned off with yellow police tape well into Wednesday evening as investigators canvassed the neighbourhood for witnesses and combed the scene for clues. Originally, more than 15 officers were on the scene as well as a police dog, plainclothes police officers, and ambulance paramedics.

An undercover police officer was speaking to what appeared to be a female witness to the incident, speaking at a bench inside the taped-off area around 2:30 p.m. There was a lockdown at nearby Henry Anderson Elementary as well as A.R. MacNeill Secondary while police secured the crime scene, which is directly across the street from Richmond Pentecostal Church.

Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie doesn’t believe the Canada Line will ever be extended south, despite a design that could accommodate more track. “In our lifetimes, you probably won’t ever see it,” said Brodie. “I don’t think we’ll ever see the Canada Line itself extended because the last section of it has only one line, not two tracks.” MALCOLM Speaking at a RichBRODIE mond Chamber of Commerce event Tuesday, Brodie acknowledged the Canada Line was “speciﬁcally built with the idea that it could be extended” south, but that would come with a big price tag. The Canada Line cost $2.05 billion to build—or $107.9 million per kilometre. Could a ground-level system be built instead to extend rapid transit farther south than Saba Road? Brodie said there would be enough density in Richmond to support that—at least to Steveston Highway—but directly south of the Fraser River there’s little population to support it. “So you’re going to have a huge expense for really very little value in terms of densities,” said Brodie. The Canada Line opened August 2009, connecting downtown Vancouver with the airport and the Brighouse area of Richmond. On Lulu Island, the line is elevated, travelling nearly four kilometres down No. 3 Road—the last half being a single-track guideway.

Photography exhibit explores impact of China’s one child policy by Matthew Hoekstra Staff Reporter

ua Jin arrived in Canada five years ago alone. With no family or friends, she got homesick. She especially missed her parents, even though they died a few years earlier.

“I had a really great regret that as a photographer I didn’t have a chance to photograph my parents,” said Jin, 36, a Vancouver resident. She realized she still had a chance to capture images and stories of her extended family in her native country of China, and My Big Family began to take shape. Jin’s ongoing photography project is the latest exhibition at Richmond Art Gallery. It features 43 environmental portraits of her relatives and video clips illustrating how they contrast. An accompanying community project—in Gallery 3—features a display of framed family photographs of Richmond families. Jin’s photographs form an intimate view of her grandmother, aunts, uncles and other relatives, while also offering a larger portrait of a country undergoing dramatic economic and social changes. China’s gap between rich and poor is evident, as are the vastly different lifestyles within the country’s population, such as those who farm in the countryside and those who work in bustling cities. Jin’s work also underscores the gradual disappearance of large families in China

After her parents died, Jin—a member of the ﬁrst generation affected by the policy—felt particularly lucky she has a twin sister. “She’s so important for me right now. Otherwise I’d be totally alone in this world,” she said. “My generation, they don’t have brothers and sisters, but in my case, I’m a twin, so there’s nothing they can do about twins.” Most children in China now grow up without having the experience of having brothers and sisters, and Jin said that’s prompted her generation to re-examine the policy and its impact. Despite evidence the policy is relaxing somewhat, having more than one child in China is far from easy. “They don’t have the environment for them to grow up for them to learn how to share, for them to consider others. This isn’t their fault. It is just what is happening in China.” Jin trained as an animator and graphic designer and worked as an artistic creative director for more than 10 years before

entering studies at Emily Carr University of Art and Design. This month she ﬁnished her ﬁnal class to earn her bachelor of arts degree in photography—an education that has opened a new door for Jin, who now plans to pursue graduate studies.

Veteran’s relatives suspected of fraud Mary Lou Lexier and Alan Lexier investigated for claiming vet Ben Dewberry alive 8 years after death by Martin van den Hemel Staff Reporter The relatives of a Canadian veteran were investigated for cashing his government veteran’s pension for as many as eight years after his death. According to a search warrant application filed at Richmond provincial court and obtained by The Richmond Review in January, Richmond’s Alan Lexier and his wife Mary Lou Lexier were suspected of defrauding Veteran Affairs Canada of $125,725.72. Mary Lou Lexier, a retired teacher from Delta, is the daughter of veteran Benjamin Dewberry, who died on Jan. 24, 1998. She and her husband are suspected of having continued to cash his pension cheques until as late as Sept. 30, 2006, the search

warrant claims. The Richmond Review was aware of the allegations earlier this year, but declined to publish the story until charges were approved by the Crown. Alan Lexier has now been charged with theft over $5,000, theft under $5,000, fraud over $5,000 and fraud under $5,000 and is scheduled to make his first apperance in Richmond provincial court on May 1. Mary Lou Lexier has not been charged. Details of the RCMP investigation are included in a police application to obtain a driver’s license photograph from the Insurance Corporation of B.C. of Alan Lexier, who until last summer was the umpire-in-chief for Richmond City Baseball Association. The photo was to be used for a line-up to show to the manager of a local mailbox rental business, where the Lexiers are alleged to have opened a post office box for the receipt of Dewberry’s pension cheques. The two-year RCMP investigation was launched in October 2009 after Mounties were contacted by Andre Joannette, director general of finance for Veterans Affairs Canada. Dewberry had been admitted to a Burnaby residential care facility in October of 1997, and Mary Lou Lexier was named as his power of attorney who was responsible for payment of his share of costs to the facility, the court document states. Dewberry died the following January 1998, but according to the search warrant, a benefit declaration form signed in the name of Dewberry and dated May 1, 1999 was submitted to Veterans Affairs Canada.

“I infer by this that there was a willful misrepresentation of Benjamin Dewberry as living and eligible to receive his pension,” the search warrant application states. Investigators interviewed Mary Lou Lexier in 2009, and she claimed that Alan Lexier handled her father’s affairs prior to his death. She claimed she and her husband thought the veteran’s pension money was a survivor’s benefit. “We had done everything we had stopped all his pensions, like his Canada Pension was stopped and all that kind of stuff was done,” she said in the court document. She claimed she never signed her father’s name on a benefit declaration form. “She is willing to pay back any money that is owed to Veterans Affairs Canada,” the court document states. “She and Alan Lexier have always struggled financially—they have had three kids go through university and Alan Lexier had a stroke six years ago.” Alan Lexier, in a statement to investigators, said he couldn’t figure out why Veterans Affairs Canada didn’t know Dewberry had passed away because the family received money from Canada Pension to pay for his funeral, and he had lived in a veteran’s hospital before he passed away. Reached in January, Alan Lexier declined to comment. But in a statement to police, he questioned whether criminal charges would still be forwarded if the family paid restitution. Lexier’s lawyer, Vincent Michaels, did not return phone calls.

Nonetheless, she’s also continuing her pursuit for photographs for the exhibition My Big Family. If for nothing else, to remember where she came from. “I did this in memory of my parents,” said Jin. “I did this for them.”

Memorial to be held for Mary Gazetas on Saturday A memorial for Mary Gazetas will be held on Saturday at the Chinese Bunkhouse at Britannia Heritage Shipyard. The local artist, writer, activist and lover of the outdoors and her community, passed away Tuesday morning after a six-week illness. She was 68. Richmond woman pleads guilty in riot charge To be sentenced for part in Stanley Cup riot on June 20 in Vancouver by Martin van den Hemel Staff Reporter

A Richmond woman who lost her job as a result of her involvement in the June 2011 Stanley Cup riot in downtown Vancouver, has pled guilty to participating in a riot. Camille Roxanne Cacnio pled guilty last week in Vancouver provincial court. She was originally also charged with breaking and entering. A pre-sentencing report will be prepared in anticipation of her next

court appearance, scheduled for June 20 in Vancouver, at which time she's expected to be sentenced. Cacnio, a scholarship winner in 2007, admitted that she’s the young woman pictured at the 1:33 mark of a YouTube video at http://tinyurl.com/ CacnioRiot. In a blog she posted after the riot, and which she hastily took down after apparently having second thoughts about its content and receiving negative feedback, she apologized for her actions and said she was prepared to face the music. She said she was caught up in “mob mentality” and was seeking an “adrenaline rush” and suggested that she was impaired by alcohol. “At the time, being a part of the riot was simply to fulﬁll the adrenaline rush I was looking and hoping for—an adrenaline rush that I previ-

ously got from post-winning games: hugging randoms, dancing on the streets, honking car horns non-stop, and high-fiving just about everybody. In the same way that everybody enjoyed collectively showing pride in our team, it was enjoyable to express my disappointment in a collective manor.” She wrote: “I had no intentions of defiling the city. I love Vancouver as much as you do—I've lived her since I was 7 months old. But in my immature, intoxicated perspective all I saw was that the riot was happening, and would continue happening with or without me, so I might as well get my adrenaline fix.” Cacnio had until the riot had been working as a receptionist at Burrard Acura and was employed at the UBC Birdcoop Fitness Centre. She lost her job at Burrard Acura.

Onni eyes 660 apartments in City Centre

Metro Vancouver owns and operates the Gilbert trunk sewer line, which connects the Bridgeport pump station in the north with the Lulu Island Wastewater Treatment Plant in the south. The regional authority has determined

by Matthew Hoekstra Staff Reporter Onni Group of Companies is proposing to build 660 apartments in a redeveloping area of City Centre perhaps best known for its Tim Hortons. City council’s planning committee has given early endorsement to four six-storey wood frame buildings at 7731 and 7771 Alderbridge Way. The two parcels—2.9 hectares (7.1 acres) in size— are currently zoned industrial-retail and are home to various retail and commercial tenants, including a Tim Hortons coffee shop and Y Yoga. Onni’s plans call for the buildings to be constructed overtop one-storey concrete parking structures. If approved, the project would serve as a signiﬁcant catalyst for change in the area: an extension of Cedarbridge Way, construction of a new section of

River Road along a former railway right-of-way, the widening of Alderbridge Way and Gilbert Road, and new pedestrian and bicycle routes. In his report, senior co-ordinator of major projects Mark McMullen called the development a “distinctive, high-quality, high-density yet low-rise part of the Lansdowne Village neighbourhood.” Thirty-eight affordable housing units—with rents currently pegged at a maximum of $925 to $1,137—are included in the development, designed by Yamamoto Architecture Inc. Onni bought the site in early 2011. It’s located north of a former Grimm’s sausage factory site, which is also the subject of a rezoning application for a mixed-use development. If built, the buildings would be among the ﬁrst sixstorey wood-frame developments in Richmond since the province changed the B.C. Building Code to allow the wood structures taller than four ﬂoors. Onni is also responsible for two other major residential projects in the neighbourhood. Ora, a threetower mixed-use project is under construction near the Richmond Olympic Oval. Flo, on Elmbridge Way, is another three-tower development built by Onni a few years ago.

City council approved a three-year temporary use permit Monday for the Summer Night Market to operate at 12631 Vulcan Way. The site, behind Home Depot, has hosted a market for the past eight years. “The Summer Night Market is ready for its opening day,” said operator Paul Cheung in a news release. “We have been working hard to prepare a fun and entertaining multicultural outdoor event for our visitors.” The market is scheduled to operate from May 11 to Sept. 16. Besides perusing the food offerings and wares of merchandise vendors, Cheung said visitors can expect entertainment for all ages throughout the market, including karaoke, magic shows, an eating contest and singing competitions. Cheung said his paved site is an “excellent location” with free street parking and easy access by transit. Pay parking will be offered on-site. Admission to the market is free. Operating hours are Fridays and Saturdays from 7 p.m. to midnight and Sundays and holiday Mondays 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. This is the second night market set to open in Richmond this spring; the Richmond Night Market will open May 18 near River Rock Casino Resort.

Council Update RCMP contract leaves too many unanswered questions By Derek Dang The City of Richmond and most other BC municipalities are being asked to commit our Derek Dang communities Councillor to a 20-year contract with the RCMP. This is being negotiated through the Province and the implications are vast. We are being asked to commit to a contract that isn’t filled with financial answers and assurances of cost containment. When we had a presentation on Monday, April 2, 2012, the question was asked of our staff whether we had firm numbers regarding the costs for police services such as specialized teams (dog squads, integrated gang task force, Emergency Response Team and integrated homicide investigation team). The answer received was a flat “no.” In business and life, when one enters a contract, the expectation is to have a well thought out agreement that defines and identifies all the items that each party are responsible for. There are elements of this contract that will bind us and future generations to figures that haven’t been spelled out. In other words, we are to act on blind faith that the provincial government is doing their best for our cities. I said the best thing about this contract is the opt out clause! Further on in the discussion on April 2, we were told if we

didn’t comply and sign the contract, we’d be dealt with harshly. These were described as “vagaries” such as a potential increased cost to the City of Richmond. If we didn’t sign the contract, we wouldn’t have a loss of police services, but we wouldn’t have the benefit of the contract so we could be charged more! I have maintained the view that the RCMP does its best to provide policing services to Richmond, but the model and the governance hinders the most efficient service. We need to be able to see better accountability and cooperation that is local and not Ottawa driven. There is a need to be locally controlled and a Richmond Police Force is one option that would allow us to retain our identity. We could probably share services with Delta, New Westminster and Vancouver for dog squads, gang task force, emergency response, etc. A Richmond force would be governed locally. Governance, accountability, budget and policy would be locally controlled—a huge bonus. Would we be better off with a Metro Police Force? Given the choices of a single police entity versus the many silos that are fragmenting the Lower Mainland today, I believe so. Criminals, serial criminals and gangs would find it more difficult to operate with a more harmonious police presence. Whether it is a new regional police force or otherwise, some hard decisions will have to be made before we commit to a 20-year contract.

his is not a column I wanted to write. Paying homage to a dear friend, mentor, and most importantly, a co-conspirator, Mary Gazetas.

Mary and I first met in 1998 when I was the staff agrologist for West Coast Seeds. She was instrumental in helping to find a home for a new trial ground at London Farm. But I didn’t really get to know her until about 2003 when she had already started the Richmond Fruit Tree Sharing Project. Mary had a wonderful way of drawing people in and making them feel included in every project and her list of accomplishments is incredible. I can only scratch the surface by remembering her as an artist, a writer, a project manager, and a community organizer. We all loved Mary and loved working with her because she made it so fun. A couple of years ago, she came into a meeting (as she often did) with the statement “Guys, I have this idea…” She had seen an outdoor pizza oven in a Toronto neighbourhood where seniors and youth were at odds with each other. She went on to describe how building the oven and then making the pizzas had helped bring both sides together. And with that story, we were convinced we wanted this for our community. So, we went about planning, and gathering materials. At one low tide, Mary, Kareno, my two kids and I, with our pant legs rolled up, gathered old bricks that had once been part of the cannery houses on the north arm of the river. Other friends brought paving stones. We dug huge mounds of clay and Ian Lai gathered cattail fibre. In a weekend, we built the oven, many of us mixing all the ingredients with their bare feet. We had music, and food and tons of laughter. Susan finished it off with some beautiful scrollwork and then the cob oven was born. The first time we fired it up, Mary was front and centre.

She stuffed the oven with wood but when she went to open the door, she realized, too late, that she had over-fueled it and out came this wave of fire, like a flame thrower, singing Mary’s eyebrows and bangs. When she related this to me, she was giggling and had that twinkle

in her eye. That twinkle, that light, is what drew us to her. In working with her and sharing her adventures, we developed our own light. Now, when someone comes up with a new idea, I catch myself saying “Right on!” A true Maryism. I see it in many others working

at the Sharing Farm too. She lit that fire in all of us. So, although I am devastated, and the tears have not stopped flowing, I am still smiling. I see her special touch everywhere– in Steveston, Terra Nova, Minoru Residence, even at the dog park. Most importantly, I see her energy

continuing to live in all of us who knew her. There will be more laughter, more stories, and more adventures. That’s what Mary taught us to do.

Mary Gazetasâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s vision Editor: Back in 2001, Mary Gazetas saw ripe fruit left on trees, and she saw it as good food that could feed the needy. So she found ways to pick and donate it, always with cheerful enthusiasm, and others were glad to help. In a long happy story, that spirit began to transform Richmond. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d like to share a later part of the Mary story, the Garden City Lands part. As with the unpicked fruit, Mary energized a groundswell of support for conserving the Garden City Lands. Her team expressed it in a sustainable-food-park proposal for the lands, and Richmond council responded well in early 2007. Maryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s community groups also hosted a town hall meeting at the local Kwantlen campus in March 2007, with two hundred citizens overďŹ&#x201A;owing the hall to exchange insights. All sorts of people and groups aiming to keep the Garden City Lands in the Agricultural Land Reserve grew vocal. In January 2008, Mary welcomed a range of voices to her table at London Landing, and they became a coalition with momentum. The Garden City Lands public hearing in March 2008 brought out far more voices, so the coalition became a society, and Mary became a director and ofďŹ cer. In mid2009, she asked to cut back to tend to her husbandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s health, but she was always there for us as a sage advisor. Meanwhile, the Terra Nova parks, where Mary played a central role, became a model of community success for the lands to emulate. The Garden City Lands, like their Terra Nova cousins, can and should forever express Maryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s spiritâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;a smiling, healing, sharing vision in appreciation of what we have. Editor: I was saddened to hear of the passing of Mrs. Gazetas, as an instant friend of everyone she met. During the course of Mr. Gazetasâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; illness, I often saw Mary at Minoru Park, at her favorite spot facing the waterfall, tending to the love of her life, Aristides, silently and with great dignity for his comfort at all times. Countless times, she would sit with him and I stopped a few times and said hi only to see in her eyes a sadness she cared too much to try to hide. A few times I saw her at Save-on at Terra Nova and she always wore a beautiful smile for anyone willing to say hello to her. Although I never formally introduced myself and just said hi to her, I sometimes thought of her after seeing her and wished her pain, the slow loss of her husband could somehow be avoided. Volunteers help our community grow Editor: A tree, when it’s ﬁrst planted, looks scrawny, as if the slightest wind could tear it from its roots and send it toppling to the ground. Under the proper conditions, though, that same tree will grow to become strong and vibrant, reaching heights no one thought possible. A community grows in much the same way. It starts out with shallow roots, and, over time, steadies itself, branches out, begins providing shade and shelter for an increasing number of diverse inhabitants. There are many reasons why a

community grows, but this week, the spotlight shines on one of the most important: volunteers. April 15 - 21 is National Volunteer Week, during which we celebrate the 13.3 million Canadians who contribute their time and talents so that communities across the country can thrive and flourish. Ours included. Richmond is a young city brimming with potential. I firmly believe that volunteerism—and the sense of civic pride it helps create—is the key to fulfilling that potential. Richmond’s Laura Klassen is among Trinity Western University’s art students who are participating in a mixed-media art exhibition in Langley. Resurface features the graduating art and design class of Trinity’s school of arts, media and culture. The exhibition explores themes of transformation and renewal. Two of Klassen’s works are in the show: “Seven Second Story Time,” acrylic, graphite, bristol board and photographic projections on canvas; and “From A Seed, The proto-type of a Mural Project of Revitalization for The Ivanhoe,” acrylic and gesso on aluminum sheet metal. The diverse array of works is the culmination of four years of academic study. Resurface runs until April 28 at Langley Centennial Museum, 9135 King St., in Fort Langley.

The term, hay fever is a misnomer. The correct term is allergic rhinitis. Allergic rhinitis is manifested by clear nasal discharge, sneezing, nasal itchiness and watery eyes upon exposure to allergens. These are chemicals we are sensitive to, usually small protein particles. In the old days, people allergic to hay got these symptoms while harvesting hay, hence the term “Hay fever” The common seasonal allergens are pollens, grass and weeds (especially ragweed). Pollens are male sex cells of plants. They are small, dry and light and hence can be carried by the wind everywhere. Other year around, less common allergens are cats and dogs dander and mold. Allergy is like a war between our body and the chemicals we are allegic to. When exposed to the allergens, our body begins producing certain antibodies in large quantities, in this case called IgE ( E for erythema). These are the soldiers that begin fighting with the offending agents, the allergens. In doing so some bystanders get hurt, in this case, the cells called the mast cells. Damaged mast cells end up releasing a chemical called histamine. It is histamine that causes these allergy symptoms. This is why we use antihistamines to relieve these symptoms. Best treatment for allergy symptoms is to avoid exposure to allergens which can be difficult if not impossible sometimes. If you have ongoing significant symptoms, see your family doctor as allergies can cause more serious problems such as asthma, sinusitis, chronic lethargy, angio-edema and anaphylactic reactions. The latter two are very serious allergic reactions presenting with hives, lip, tounge and throat swelling and difficulty breathing. It depends. If you are a younger person (25 years or younger roughly) the problem you are trying to prevent is decay developing between teeth. This normally occurs at the contact point between the teeth. If there is enough plaque (and it’s acid) sitting in there it will begin to dissolve the enamel surface and eventually form a cavity. If you are using your toothbrush regularly, properly and thoroughly it will help minimize the plaque accumulation around the teeth at the gum line. However, it won’t get into the tight “in-between” spots. Therefore you need to floss.

On the other hand if you are older and/or have some issues with gum recession or periodontal (gum) problems, you likely are no longer as prone to the cavities of youth but can accumulate more plaque between the larger spaces between the teeth. This in turn exacerbates the gum problem and can also lead to root surface decay. Using only floss in this situation doesn’t really do much compared to using interdental brushes. This was shown in a 2007 study (Dental Abstract May/June 2007 issue) of 77 patients with periodontal disease. After being cleaned up, these people were either instructed to use floss or use interdental brushes. Follow up of both groups was done at 6 and 12 weeks. Both groups showed plaque reductions but the group using the interdental brushes had significantly and consistently better results.

It’s not new. It’s been around since late last summer but only recently discovered. More than six-hundred thousand Mac computers were infected with a Trojan that was designed to steal personal information and attack and infect other systems as part of a large global botnet. To add injury to insult, more such malware is being discovered as I type. Given the slow response of Apple, and the long history of indifference by Mac users, it’s not surprising that the doo doo has hit the proverbial fan. Vancouver streets came alive last Sunday morning with almost 50,000 people running, jiving, sashaying and walking to the beat of 18 different bands spread out over 10 kilometers at the 28th Vancouver Sun Run. On a cool day under overcast skies, they came in all shapes and sizes and from every demographic to be part of what is now more of a cultural happening than a footrace. It is the largest 10 km in Canada and one of the largest road races in the world. For the vast majority of participants, it will be the only 10 km (or any other distance) they do this year. Only the top 300 or so runners will race in a variety of events throughout the year. So what makes tens of thousands of ﬁrst-timers and one-timers decide to go for it? “It’s the place to be!” was the answer given by several out of town participants. For locals, it’s a chance to see their names in print, as the Vancouver Sun news-

ly 3,700 participants and has slowly morphed since then into one of the biggest days on Vancouver’s calendar. Now, only the Peachtree 10k in Atlanta, with 55,077 ﬁnishers last year, is a larger 10 km than the Sun Run. In a Monday phone interview, I chatted with 22- year-old Kelly Wiebe, from Regina who was the overall men’s winner in 29:13. This was Wiebe’s ﬁrst Sun Run and only his second road race. He was surprised by his victory, out kicking Kip Kangogo of Lethbridge, Alberta to the line. “I enjoyed running the course, running beside the ocean and the many spectators along the course. The scenery is unbelievable.” Wiebe happily said, “I think it will take two weeks for me to let it settle in,” adding, “I will come back next year if I can; The organizers did an unbelievable job and were great in taking care of the elite runners.” The women’s overall

winner was Natasha Fraser, 30, from Port Moody with a time of 34:12. It was Fraser’s ﬁrst win in her seve =nth Sun Run. “It was an overwhelming feeling to win,” Fraser said, “as I didn’t have any expectations. I was so surprised and happy.” Both Wiebe and Fraser will compete in the 10,000 meters at the Canadian Track and Field Championships in Calgary in June. For those of you that put the Sun Run on your “bucket list,” time may be on your side. Just ask Eleanore Cross of West Vancouver, who won the women’s 95-99 division in 2:25:54. Meanwhile, Bernard Lotzkar, from Richmond, B.C. breezed home in 52:49 to easily win the men’s 80-84 division. Clearly, people are getting the hang of it! Christine Blanchette is a runner and writer. For many, it’s simply the camaraderie of training together for a common purpose – finishing the race and enjoying the sense of accomplishment. It is 8:30 and I am already standing in my wave among thousands of other yellow bib numbers. It was so exciting to be here waiting for the nine o’clock start, soon to be carried along with so many people running in the streets that are usually filled with cars. Think of sardines in the can trying to swim out. It had the effect of the Pied Piper leading us all to the finish line. Bands and smiling faces everywhere made the run more enjoyable. The scenic course starts on West Georgia Street making its way through the West End, over bridges to the finish line at BC Place Stadium, where popular race commentator Steve King announces the runner’s names as they cross the finish line. Honda Civic Sedan Si is a performance car under the skin by Neil Moore Special to Black Press Despite the drubbing from Consumer Reports, the Civic is still Canada’s top-selling car—and for 14 years running. Sure, you can’t entirely ignore the complaints about plasticky interiors, lack of steering feedback, longish stopping distances and body lean in corners, but keep in mind they tested only the LX—the second-lowest trim level. And not all reviewers agree with CR. Also consider that this knock hasn’t put a dent in sales, with Honda moving 55,090 Civics in 2011, and 14,281 in the ﬁrst quarter of 2012. The Si Sedan, my tester for the week, should dismiss at least some of these gripes. As Honda’s four-door performance variant, it gets sporttuned suspension, bigger brakes, tuned steering, and most importantly more power, making it a vastly different driving experience from lesser Civics. One of the key Si upgrades for 2012 was swapping its highstrung 2.0litre inline four-cylinder—a screamer you could wind up to nearly 8,000 rpm—with a

Minivan sales have been declining in recent years with many manufacturers dropping out of the market entirely. But after a week with a 2012 Toyota Sienna XLE AWD, I ﬁnd it hard to understand why. Now in its third generation after a major revamp last year, the Sienna just keeps getting better and better. It’s the versatility and convenience of the minivan that makes it such a family-friendly vehicle and the Sienna is among the best of the bunch with what Toyota calls “a fresh focus on modern comfort, convenience, style and functionality.” There’s something for everyone with the Sienna that comes in eight models for 2012, including a choice of two power trains along with available all-wheel drive. To my knowledge, Toyota is the only manufacturer to offer all-wheel drive in a minivan. My tester was a topline XLE AWD V6, starting at $40,835. With the optional Limited Package ($8,375) and other taxes and freight and PDI, the end price was $50,974.36. That’s a hefty price tag for any vehicle, but not out of line with top-shelf trim levels among the competition like the Nissan Quest, Honda Odyssey Touring or Chrysler Town & Country Limited. At the other end of the trim spectrum, the staring price for the entry-level Sienna LE is $28,120 or $29,120 with the 3.5L V6. The base LE comes with a 187 hp 2.7-litre four-cylinder engine that achieves a fuel-economy rating of 9.1L/100 km city/highway combined. Most Sienna models, however, arrive with a 3.5-litre V6 producing 266 hp and 245 lb/ft of torque. Front-wheel drive Sienna V6 models deliver a combined city/ highway fuel efﬁciency of 9.8L/100 km. The all-wheel drive model is rated at 10.6L/100 km city/highway combined. The Sienna offers seating for seven or eight people with a

auto review From Page 18 Much of the joy in driving the Si also comes from its six-speed manual transmission with short-throw shifter. The clutch engages nicely, not abruptly like the Mazdaspeed3, and the stick is light and easy to work. Go hard into a corner, drop into second gear, power out of the curve, and you’ll also notice less wheelspin on exiting. Thanks to the limited-slip differential, once again found only on the Si, spirited driving is more fun than most front-drivers. And as for body lean, I had no complaints with my tester, as its suspension beneﬁts from higher spring rates, larger stabilizer bars and lower ride height than conventional Civics. And front and rear damper settings are sport-tuned. Common to all Civics is the two-tier instrument panel, carried over from the last model. It divides the display top and bottom with key information like speedo, fuel gauge and rev-limit indicator (Si only) above the steering wheel, and secondary info below. This puts the most-used instruments in the driver’s line of sight. Although Civic is Honda’s sales leader, the Si only makes up 4.5 per cent of Civic sales, making it a bit of a niche vehicle. But it does represent what the company claims is at the heart of its engineering. Over the years, Honda has pumped its racing heritage and the fun-to-drive character of its vehicles, and more than any other car in its lineup, except perhaps the Accord HFP, the Si embodies these qualities in spades.

With the recent 2012 kickoff of the B.C. Football Conference’s Tier II Junior League, Terry Kehoe is realizing a dream. Two years ago, the Richmond man proposed a spring league to complement the existing community Midget Division and the B.C. secondary schools’ senior programs in the Greater Vancouver area. And with four communities—Richmond (Raiders), Burnaby (Lions), Vancouver (Trojans) and North Delta (Longhorns)— joining forces, that’s now a reality. “This is really the first collaborative effort to benefit existing community, high school and junior programs,” said Kehoe, who served briefly as the committee chair before stepping down in favour of former B.C. passed away gently on April 12, 2012, with her family at her side. Dorothy was born in 1914, in Dyserth N. Wales, to Elizabeth and Robert. Dorothy proudly served her country during the Second World War as a nurse in the RAF before immigrating to Canada in 1949. She is predeceased by her husband James Morton Conroy (d1994), parents, and 11 brothers and sisters. Dorothy is lovingly survived by her son, Richard, and her daughters Genie (Chris), Vikki, and Geri (Peter). Dorothy will be remembered for her fruitcakes, grilled cheese sandwiches, and her lessons on the â&#x20AC;&#x153;properâ&#x20AC;? way to make a cup of tea. BC Wakayama Kenjin Kai president Dr. Jim Tanaka, City of Richmond Acting Mayor Bill McNulty and Consul General of Japan Hideki Ito at a cherry tree dedication ceremony at Garry Point. The cherry trees have been planted as part of a 12-year initiative funded by BC Wakayama Kenjin Kai. The Cherry Tree Planting Project honours the Japanese pioneers who worked and lived in Steveston and celebrates the deep roots of Japanese-Canadians in the community to this day. In total, 255 Akebono cherry trees have been donated and planted.
