Lead, copper flushed away in Kitimat By Cameron Orr THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

KITIMAT - A water flushing program has been successful in reducing the amounts of lead and copper in the water supply at Kitimat public schools. On April 6 a joint announcement from the Coast Mountains School District and Northern Health alerted parents that elevated levels of copper and lead was found in test samples of area schools. Those schools affected are Nechako Elementary, Kildala Elementary, Kitimat City High and Mount Elizabeth Secondary School. However, despite the presence of the minerals in the water, it is believed that even without

the flushing that it is not expected to produce any adverse health effects, due to the “sporadic nature of water consumption in the school setting.” It is believed that the source of the minerals is old plumbing. Plumbing installed prior to 1990 is known to leech the material into water that sits in the pipe – which is why flushing the water works at bringing the quality up. In a Frequently Asked Questions document prepared by Northern Health they say that the worst case scenario, developed by the BC Centre for Disease using pre-flush water samples, students would only be ingesting just under 50 per cent of the daily tolerable lead intake, taking into consideration all other sources of lead.

As for the copper, they say that guidelines more frequently relate copper levels to things such as taste and odour, and that there are currently no health guidelines in relation to copper levels in water. “The likelihood of any long term health effects from copper in the drinking water is very low,” the FAQ continues. Coast Mountain Board of Education Chair Art Erasmus said that the flushing program has worked well on water quality since the issue was discovered. “If you take the standing water that’s in the pipe and flush it out then the new water from the water supply comes in...and it hasn’t had time to leech any copper and lead into it yet,” he said. He pointed out that this is

an issue that exists everywhere in Kitimat with plumbing older than 1990. Northern Health’s Chief Medical Officer Dr. Ronald Chapman told The Northern Connector’s sister publication, The Northern sentinel that the flushing program is internationally accepted as good practice. He said that the first water samples were taken from Nechako Elementary when staff there began to question water quality when fish living at the school were not thriving. “The concentrations certainly were not high enough to cause any toxic symptoms,” he said. It is the goal of public sector agencies to ensure that clean and safe drinking water is provided to citizens.

Port study clearly sets out many of its benefits THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

PRINCE RUPERT - An economic impact study released on April 12 by the Prince Rupert Port Authority shows the benefits derived from port activity has increased significantly over just the past two years. The study shows that the number of direct jobs attributed to on-going port operations is 2,330 creating 2,220 person years of employment. In comparison, a 2009 study showed there were 1,500 direct jobs attributed to port activity creating 1,300 person years of employment. That translates into 155.3 per cent increase in the number of direct jobs over the past two years. The largest number of direct jobs are related to rail, accounting for 650 jobs, followed by trucking with 430 jobs, stevedoring (dock workers) at 340 jobs and the terminal operator accounts for 290 jobs. The value of wages attributed to direct jobs has jumped from $80 million in annual wages in 2009 to $130 million in 2011. When the number of indirect and induced jobs is taken into consideration, the jump is also substantial. This year’s economic impact study shows port activity is responsible for a total of 4,780 job – including 1,350 indirect and 1,100 induced jobs – that puts $200 million into the economy and create 4,550 person years of employment. In comparison, the 2009 study showed the total number of jobs related to the port was 2,720 person years of employment creating $150 million in wages. “There has been so much anecdotal evidence that people are seeing an increase in economic activity, and it’s nice to have the evidence demonstrating the true economic impact

port operations have. Particularly gratifying is the substantial growth in job numbers. 70 per cent growth [in person years] over two years is phenomenal. What’s interesting is that when you look back in 2009, a larger part of the work was part time, so not only are we seeing more jobs but we’re seeing more full time work,” said Prince Rupert Port Authority president and CEO Don Krusel. He noted he was a bit surprised by the growth in employment as reflected in the study’s contents. “When you think back two years, the traffic through the port hasn’t increased 70 per cent so the job growth is increasing at a faster rate than the level of traffic. I think that shows the compounding effect... Every additional tonne that is moved through this port will create more job.” In terms of the value of trade through the port of Prince Rupert, the number is also quite a bit higher than in 2009. The value of all goods moving through Prince Rupert was between $4.9 billion and $5.5 billion in 2011 compared to a value of between $2.7 billion and $3.3 billion in 2009. According to Krusel, the export numbers show just how far reaching the benefits of port activity are.

“That $5 billion in export supports thousands of jobs throughout northern BC, whether that is loggers or miners or others. Without the outlet through the port, those jobs may not exist,” said Krusel. He then noted that the volume of lumber being exported is back to what was sent out in the heyday of the Fairview bulk terminal. “Lately we as an organization have talked about how we move traffic responsibly and in an environmentally sustainable way.” I think this study shows we’re also working in an economically sustaining way not just for the region but for all of northern BC. We’re not just moving coal and grain and containers, we’re moving the economy.” While somewhat surprised by the level of growth reflected in the report, Krusel says the future for the port of Prince Rupert looks even brighter. “We sit at the threshold of even greater growth and expansion. I will go out on a limb and say that when we do another economic impact study in two or three years time, the numbers will be even more exciting than these,” he said. “The best is yet to come,” concluded Krusel in making his comments on the results of the economically positive study.

Last year Don Diego’s kindly sponsored the team with t-shirts, sold cupcakes through the restaurant and supported them the day of relay with food and a generous donation. This year Gerran Thorhaug had a fabulous idea for the Kids for a

Cause team to go in the kitchen with him at Don Diego’s and prep, plate and serve a dinner. Tickets were sold by the kids for reserved seating to the April 14 event. The guests were served chips, salsa, and a choice from four entrees and desert (baked by the master pastry chef, Laura). The team was split into two groups, one to set up and run the front of the restaurant by seating the guests and serving their drinks, dinner, dessert and clean up. The other group spent the day in the kitchen working with Jeremy and Gerran making salsa, dressings, salads, rice, assembling enchiladas and then plating the meals and deserts. Forty-two guests were served and all of the expenses were covered by Gerran, resulting in Kids for a Cause

making $1565.00 (with tips) for their efforts. It was a fabulous opportunity that Gerran provided to the team. Not many 14 years old get to experience a little taste of what it takes to be in the restaurant business. You never know this experience could just inspire a future chef or server. Regardless, the Relay for Life benefitted.

Province welcomes simpliďŹ ed environment assessments federal reviews that duplicate provincial hearings. Oliver’s ministry cited several examples, including the NaiKun Wind Energy proposal for an offshore wind farm in Hecate Strait near Haida Gwaii. The federal approval came 16 months after the province had given the project the green light. Premier Christy Clark said all the western premiers have been calling on Ottawa for most of the last decade to end the duplication in environmental

By Tom Fletcher THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

VICTORIA - B.C. government officials have warmly welcomed the federal government’s plan to leave all but the largest environmental assessments to provinces and place strict timelines on project approval decisions. Federal Natural Resources Minister Joe Oliver announced the changes Tuesday, acknowledging provincial requests to move to a “one project, one review approach and an end to long, uncertain

“It’s good for the economy to try to make sure that we can get projects to a yes – or to a no – in as timely a way as possible Premier Christy Clark reviews. “It’s good for the economy to try to make sure that we can get projects to a yes – or to a no – in as timely a way as possible, because that is good for investment, Clark said.

Oliver said there are more than 40 federal government departments and agencies that currently have responsibility for project reviews. That will be reduced to three: the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency, the National Energy Board and the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, and reviews will be limited to two years. The National Energy Board is currently holding hearings on the proposed Enbridge Northern Gateway oil pipeline proposal from Alberta to Kitimat. It is also expecting an application from Kinder Morgan Canada to expand capacity of the Trans Mountain oil pipeline from the Edmonton area to Burnaby. Clark said the B.C. government will wait for the federal review to be completed before taking a position on either project. She criticized Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson and Burnaby Mayor Derek

Corrigan for their recent statements opposing the Kinder Morgan proposal. “I think some of the mayors have decided that they know how the process is going to turn out, and they know all the information that will be presented

and they’re able to tell us in advance what the risks might be, Clark said. B.C. Environment Minister Terry Lake said until the province has studied the federal legislation, he won’t be able to say whether B.C. will need changes to take

greater responsibility for project assessment. But he denied suggestions that standards may be weakened. “We will continue to have a bar that’s set very high for environmental protection in the province of B.C., Lake said.

NANAIMO MEN’S RESOURCE CENTRE

Parental Alienation Awareness-April 25, 2012 “Parental Alienation most frequently occurs after parents are separated or divorced says Theo Boere, of the Nanaimo Men’s Resource Centre. C ON TA C T Nanaimo Men’s Resource Centre 418D Fitzwilliam St Nanaimo Office Phone: 250-716-1551 gobetweenconsulting@gmail.com Web: www.nanaimomen.com April 25 is Parental Alienation Awareness day. The Nanaimo Men’s Resource Centre would like to invite people to attend a 40 minute awareness session at their Nanaimo location. If you cannot attend we will send you a 30 minute DVD or VHS for you to watch. This is a free offer or by donation if you like; the video is regularly $24.95. To receive this special offer we ask that you pay for shipping. Parental Alienation happens after a divorce when a child becomes aligned with unjustified or exaggerated denigration of the other parent. We want Parental Alienation to be identified as an important factor in divorce and to provide people with information on what it is and how to stop this form of family violence. Session times 12:00 and 7:00 PM, Call 250-716-1551 to reserve a seat.

City of Terrace turns over recycling to a private company THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

TERRACE - The City of Terrace is closing its drop-off recycling depot beside the George Little House in favour of one to be run by the Waste Management firm. The new depot will be located at the Waste Management location on the north side of Keith Ave. between the building containing the St. John Ambulance and Medichair outlets and Superior Propane. The new location will come at no cost to either the city or Terrace and area residents, a key consideration in the city decision to close down its pilot depot which has been open since last November. The city does not have a contract with Waste Management, but as the company is going to offer the service privately, there’ll be a savings estimated at $50,000 this year. “They’re doing this at no cost so it’s pretty unique,” said city official Tara Irwin of the Waste Management offer. “We have decided not to duplicate the service.” The city depot had been regarded as a pilot project intended to test the idea of having residents take their own recyclables to a centralized drop off location. “Residents can drive up and there will be bins,” said Irwin of the Waste Management

leave their material at the location. An initial budget of $15,000, that was supposed to last for six months, was soon spent and the city added $20,000 at the start of this year. That $20,000 comes from a figure of $70,000 the city was going to set aside to finance a permanent depot. But when Waste Management stepped in, the remaining $50,000 is now available for other uses, said Irwin. Irwin said because

plan. “For the first little while at least it will be open 24 hours.” The city location is to close April 30. Waste Management is currently paving the site where bins will go, and will use a bailer for compacting materials. The depot will accept the same materials the city does now – cardboard, plastic, paper and metals. But it won’t be taking in compost, something the city depot does now. The city’s self-serve depot is part of its program, being worked on in conjunction with the Kitimat-Stikine Regional District, to keep garbage from being taken to either the city or regional district dumps. Opened as a pilot project last November, the city hired local recycling company Do Your Part to process material dropped off and Geier Waste to take the material to Do Your Part. Local metal recycler Bold Salvage placed a bin at the site for metal and the city placed its own bin for compostable material. The original plan was to make one trip to Do Your Part each week but that was quickly changed to three times a week because of the depot’s popularity. Even with three weekly pickups, the large bin for paper, cardboard and plastics would overflow and people would simply

the depot will be privately run, the city has no control over how long the service will be offered. “We will have to explore options if they decide not to continue at some point,” she said. But Irwin did add that new regulations are coming into force by 2014 which will change the way recycling is done by placing more onus on the producers of products to be responsible for cast off packaging.

SPRING CLEANING?

WE DON’T SHIP ELECTRONICS TO DEVELOPING COUNTRIES FOR RECYCLING

The electronics stewardship program now includes even more products. Consumers and businesses in British Columbia have an environmentally sound recycling option. You can drop off any acceptable products at desig-nated Collection Sites throughout the province without charge. The Electronics Stewardship Associa-tion of British Columbia (ESABC), a not- for-profit extended producer responsibil-ity program set up by the major produc-ers and retailers of electronics in British Columbia, delivers a recycling program to recover regulated electronics products from consumers and recycle them in an environmentally and socially responsible manner. Encorp Pacific (Canada) has been con-tracted by ESABC to manage the elec-tronics stewardship program. You probably know them best through their Return-It system. Since the start of ESABC’s program in 2007, more than 49 million kilograms of unwanted electronics have been recy-cled. That’s over 49 million kilograms that didn’t end up in our landfills and were not exported illegally to become someone else’s problem. How electronics Are recycled: Electronics collected in BC are sent to five approved primary recyclers in North America. The items are broken down using

various manual and mechanical processes. Products such as batteries and mercury lamps, which require special processing to recover materials, are removed. The remaining products are separated into their individual compo-nents for recovery. Through a variety of refining and smelting processes, the materials reclaimed from unwanted electronics are used as raw materials in the manufacturing of new products. It’s the responsible Thing to do: Those useless electronics in your base-ment contain valuable resources. Steel, leaded glass, copper, aluminum, plastic and precious metals can be extracted and recycled into new products. Province Wide Network: The 112 permanent Return-It Electron-ics™ Collection Sites cover over 97.4% of the province. Drop-off events are orga-nized and held in convenient locations in the communities where depots have not yet been established. How to Find a collection site: There are more than 112 convenient locations in BC. To find a Collection Site or drop off event near you, visit return-it.ca/ electronics/locations.

Who is your Mother? Poem highlights Earth Day, April 22 By Heather Webb Sacred sands of the Earth caressing each touch Because Earth’s spirit loves us ever so much Yet, pushed aside for black gold to be drained from her body No different than removing the

gallbladder merely for money. When all unhealed is brought to light The lessons learned will give us flight So we may teach of freedoms way And find the balance in each day With her great efforts to provide

you with all that you need, She needs you to know that when you do not go in love, She too feels the pain. Great Mother Earth. Bravery and Courage She stands in her power Her silence of gold, reaction to none

Responding only in dignity To that which warrants her discernment and respect. Wise woman arising! A mother, the dragon, the crone. She who is our mother, our mother the earth. Heather Webb is a poet living in Terrace, BC.

In Memoriam

In Memoriam

Joâo Carlos Nunes November 5, 1927 April 16, 2006

Winter’s grip is weakening and the warmth of spring is beginning to take hold. We take this time to remember your passing. The feeling of loss never truly goes away. We think about you every day in our thoughts. Just as we look forward to the warmer days ahead we think about all the good times and wonderful memories we have of you. Dad, you were gone too soon, we never really had a chance to say goodbye. May our warm memories of you never fade or be forgotten. May you rest in peace and love as we truly miss you and love you.

Till we meet again, Your Loving Wife and Family

Grace was born in Black River Matheson, Ontario on OOctober 24, 1989, the third of four children, Etta, Annie, and Dylan River. Her Dad, Trafford, grew up in Iroquois Falls Ontario and her Mum in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. Grace is a Kitimat girl, raised here since kindergarten. She was a French Immersion student of Cormorant and Mount Elizabeth Schools, and a student of North West Community College where she studied graphic design. Subsequently and proudly she was a Fine Arts student of Thompson River University in Kamloops. Grace was an accomplished artist and cartoonist with great joy and insight. She taught cartooning at Riverlodge and designed and illustrated her own cards and comics. Grace travelled the world: Africa, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. She loved the family cottage at Nellie Lake, but mostly she was a West Coaster. She loved the support of her family and friends in Kitimat, the independence and warmth of Kamloops and the vibrancy and culture of Vancouver. Grace was loving and very loved. Her presence lit up a room and touched everyone she met. We will miss her gentle, creative and courageous free spirit. We are heartbroken she has left us.

Roller derby team boost skills and looks for competition By Janine Workman THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

TERRACE - Terrace’s flat track roller derby team is gearing up for its spring season, and looking for a match up with an out-of-town team. With 21 ladies ready to roll, the Northcoast Nightmares are getting closer to hosting their own bout, which is a roller derby match, against an opposing team. The Nightmares are currently looking at inviting a rookie team from Prince George for Riverboat Days for a public bout. Bouts see teams of five-on-five hit the oval track, where points are won by each team’s jammer making laps on the rest of the pack. In order to play ladies must pass the Women’s Flat Track Derby Associations skills set. So far, five of the Nightmares have done this — with three more well on their way to completing the requirements. To further their skills, and showcase the sport of roller derby in Terrace, players held an open practice at the Terrace sportsplex, April 10th. “We decided to use this opportunity to invite people to come out and watch so they can learn more about it, and pick up some information,” said Tarea Laton, or Lady-Izahella, a veteran with the Northcoast Nightmares. On hand to instruct the team was Diandra Jurkic-Walls, co-founder of the PG Roller Girls team, who volunteered to visit the ladies and offer her expertise.

THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

the Kitimat Marlins Swim Club received a $125 reward cheque from Swim BC, the provincial swimming governing body. The Regional Athlete Development Award and cheque came for Alivias performance at the recent AAA Provincial Swim championships in Surrey. The Regional Athlete Development Award is given to the regional swimmer with the most points at the AAA Provincial Championships. The Northwest region currently consists of teams from Terrace, Smithers, Prince Rupert and Kitimat respectively. Points are scored for every top 8 finish at the Provincials, 8 points for first down to 1 point for 8th. Alivia had the most points out of any swimmer in the region at the meet by taking the bronze in the 11 and under girl’s 400 meter freestyle, 4th in the 800 meter freestyle and 5th in the 400 meter individual medley.

PRINCE RUPERT - The Rupert Runners hosted their annual half marathon and eight kilometre run on April 15, attracting over 100 people from across the northwest. In the 8k run for men under 40, Sam Brunelle of Prince Rupert finished first with a time of 34:28, followed by Rob Christenson less than a minute behind at 35:13 and Mark Taylor with a time of 38:47. For men aged 40 to 59, Gary Petipas placed first, finishing with a time of 38:33, just 20 seconds ahead of Martin Grifith-Zahner of Prince Rupert, while Finn Conradsen placed third at 40:29. There were three men over the age of 60 running, and Ray Leonard finished first with a time of 38:23, almost 20 minutes ahead of second place finisher Dale White with a time of 52:19, with Kurt Schlegel finishing third at 58:29 For women under 40, it was Emma Christenson of Prince Rupert who finished first with a time of 39:18, just nine seconds ahead

CONTRIBUTED / THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

Here is Alivia Salema holding up a $125 cheque she received from Swim BC.

Jurkic-Walls worked with the team on its skating, “pack communication,” “booty blocking” and its “feather feat.” The night ended with a scrimmage with Jurkic-Walls on hand to call out penalties and guide the players. “Everyone did really well and not a single girl left without learning something new,” Laton said of the night. Laton explained that roller derby in Terrace has been a relatively self-guided experience for the team, as it has navigated its way through a sport without any local example. “This sport is new to all of us, it’s not like hockey where we grew up watching it and know the rules,” Laton said. Next, the Nightmares will hosting a “Skate for Autism” day at the Skeena Secondary school track, May 6. Laton said the team was inspired by a local man, Caleb Wacholz, who has autism and is trying to raise $3,000 to donate to the Canucks Autism Network. She said the team hopes to at least match Wacholz’s donation and players are well on their way as they have already signed up numerous pledges promising money for every lap of the track they skate on the day. The team will also host a BBQ and hand out prizes. Laton invited anyone interested on the day to come out and support a good cause with the ladies and their families.

of Lia Thiesmann and 45 seconds ahead of Hannah Coons. For women 40 to 59, Gail Bennett was first with a time of 43:30, followed by Erica Pienaar at 44:37 and Karen Sankey with a time of 46:36. There were three men under 40 running in the half marathon, with Scott Foulser finishing first with a time of 1:30:09, Karl Kafta placing second with a time of 1:36:44 and Tyler Duncan finishing in 1:44:57. The fastest time for the half marathon though was Travis Carter of Kitimat in the 40-59 age group, completing the run in 1:29:18. He was followed in his age group by Mike Hamilton of Prince Rupert with a time of 1:32:56 and Fred Lambright of Terrace at 1:28:24. For women under 40, Marie Eve Gauthier had the fastest time for the half marathon at 1:35:24, followed by Tanya Kormendy at 1:42:37 and Amber Sheasgreen at 1:43:47. There was one woman over 40 running the half marathon, as Judy Thompson completed the course with a time of 2:02:08.
