B.C. allows alcohol in movie theatres Tom Fletcher Black Press The B.C. government has created a new liquor licence that allows theatres to serve alcohol during movie showings. Rich Coleman, the cabinet minister responsible for B.C. liquor and gambling policy, says the change will get rid of red tape for theatres that could get a licence to serve alcohol for live events, but couldn’t show movies in the same place. The new licence will allow theatres to serve drinks in the lobby, but
patrons won’t be able to take drinks to their movie seat unless the room is adults-only. Coleman said unlike the stands at a hockey game or out in a well-lit lobby, it’s difficult for operators to see if minors are sneaking drinks in a dark theatre. A multiplex cinema now has the option of designating one theatre for adults only and serving drinks, an approach that has caught on in other jurisdictions along with larger seats and tables. The licence would also cover an adults-only lounge adjacent to the theatre.
Other theatres that have live shows will be able to take part in film festivals without having to close their bar or apply for a new licence. “People are trying to save the older theatres, where it’s just a single-screen operation, and trying to have two types of business in order to basically survive and make those older traditional heritage-type theatres work,” Coleman said. Ontario, Alberta and Manitoba already have similar licences for movie theatres. Jeremy Bator, president of the Motion Picture Theatre
Association of B.C., praised the move. “These changes will have a positive impact on so many levels, including increased jobs, a better guest experience and a more level playing field in the increasingly competitive landscape of entertainment in Canada,” Bator said. Matthew Gibbons, president of the Vogue Theatre in Vancouver, said his heritage theatre is now mainly a live performance venue, and the new licence will make it easier to take part in the annual Vancouver International Film Festival.

Burns Lake tests B.C. forest policy Tom Fletcher Black Press The B.C. government will have a decision this spring on whether the Babine Forest Products mill can be rebuilt after it was destroyed by fire in January, the local MLA says. Nechako Lakes MLA John Rustad says he is confident enough wood can be found to keep the rebuilt mill running, despite widespread pine beetle damage to the surrounding forest and the presence of other high-volume sawmills in the region. The decision has implications for a much broader area of the B.C. Interior, where beetle-killed trees are deteriorating and alternatives to conventional lumber production are needed. “In order for us to be looking at a rebuild, in five or 10 years’ time there is not going to be enough fibre in the Lakes Timber Supply Area under current management assumptions,” Rustad said. “And so the only way we can get to what we
need in terms of a rebuild is to expand the amount of fibre that would be available.” One way to do that is to relax the “visual quality objectives” that have prevented logging in areas visible from highways and communities. Rustad said that proposal had unanimous support of mayors at the 2010 Union of B.C. Municipalities convention, as Interior communities looked at the deterioration of beetle-killed trees and the potential loss of timber supply in coming years. A larger source of wood is areas excluded from cutting because they were considered to have too low a timber volume to be economical to log. Rustad said he has toured some of these areas with representatives of Hampton Affiliates, the Oregonbased owner of the Babine mill, and they believe they can expand into these areas. Another option is a shift from a volumebased timber licence to an area-based system, similar to woodlot and
community forest licences issued by the B.C. government in recent years. Instead of a permit to take a certain volume of lumber each year, the licence holder would be permitted to harvest a certain number of hectares each year. The idea is to promote selective harvesting, more intensive thinning and fertilizing and use of waste wood for bioenergy to increase forest productivity. Burns Lake is the site of one of six Pinnacle Pellet plants in B.C. The Quesnel-based company produces softwood pellet fuel, animal bedding and spill absorbent from lowergrade wood at Burns
Lake, Houston, Prince George, Quesnel, Williams Lake and Armstrong. Pinnacle’s Burns Lake plant has been using wood with higher moisture content since the loss of Babine, previously a source of kilndried wood scraps.

Controlled burns to take place in city The Williams Lake Fire Department will be conducting controlled burns of long grasses in the coming weeks to mitigate fire risk and conduct training sessions. Homeowners are being advised that these burns will create smoke, so they may take measures necessary to prevent smoke from entering their homes. The burns will be conducted between 6 and 9 p.m., weather permitting, in the following areas. • Tuesday, April 17 — Gibbon Street Water

Cities protest surprise RCMP pay hikes Jeff Nagel Black Press B.C. cities say they’ve been blindsided by surprise RCMP pay raises that the federal government enabled just as it was signing a new policing contract that was supposed to usher in a new era of trust and cost control. Langley City Mayor Peter Fassbender has sent a letter on behalf of the
Union of B.C. Municipalities to Public Safety Minister Vic Toews expressing “our complete shock and surprise” over the undisclosed pay lifts, which he warned will create “significant backlash” from councils and taxpayers. Fassbender, the UBCM rep in the recent contract talks, said cities don’t yet know how much more money – if any – they will have to carve out of
their budgets to fund the higher RCMP payroll. Justice Minister Shirley Bond said she has been assured by Ottawa administrative savings totaling $195 million will partly flow to cities and could entirely offset the pay raises, and possibly even lower their costs. But Bond is seeking more details. “I am deeply concerned about any potential impacts on our mu-

nicipalities and that this information came as a surprise,” she said. Toews has said cities were advised months ago that raises on the order of 1.5 per cent were possible this year but neither the province nor cities were formally notified of the details of the compensation package. Fassbender said even if the pay hikes end up cost-neutral or better for cities, the lack of com-
munication and consultation is deeply troubling, as is the timing. “You just can’t plan this way,” he said. The province signed a new 20-year RCMP contract on March 21 – ending its threat to terminate the Mounties and form a new provincial police force – after securing extensive promises of more say for cities on spending decisions. already ratified the new contract, including Surrey, Kelowna and the Township of Langley. Fassbender said cities that don’t sign by the deadline effectively give two years’ notice of withdrawal from the RCMP and commit to forming their own police forces or partnering with existing municipal forces. “I’m still going to urge our council to sign the new contract,” Fass-
bender said. The new contract creates a UBCM-led committee with 10 civic reps who are promised much more hands-on control of spending changes, instead of just an advisory role. Cities that sign the RCMP deal can still opt out at any time on two years notice, and a review of the contract is promised every five years.

The after-hours nursing telephone service will complement the existing supports available during the day for those nearing the end of their life, and their families. The hours of operation are from 9 p.m. to 8 a.m. Pacific time, seven days a week. This service is available to those eligible

to receive palliative care nursing services through the provincial home and community care program. This service has been connecting patients with nurses in Fraser Health since 2005 and now palliative patients in every health authority will be able to pick up the phone anytime during the overnight hours and receive confidential information and support from specially trained registered nurses. “Improving the Care of B.C. Seniors: An Action Plan� contains concrete actions to improve
the lives of seniors, their families and caregivers, such as providing afterhours phone support to patients with terminal illnesses. God is all about joy and forgiveness but joy at an execution! How could that be? Jesus was clear when he said, “There is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.� We have the clear record that this happened right in the midst of the most evil, cruel and unfair executions of all time. Jesus, the creator to the universe, after a day of intense rejection and cruelty, was dying between two harden criminals. Thieves they were and as one was cursing and mocking him, the other turned to him and after rebuking his comrade in crime said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.� Jesus answered him, “Truly, I tell you today. You will be with me in paradise.� The joy these words brought to the dying heart of Jesus, we humans cannot comprehend. The rejoicing this triggered among the angels of God, even on this tragic day, we on this dark planet are unable to grasp. For Jesus, this was a positive indication that His death was not in vain. He was encouraged that some would respond to His amazing act of love. Some who by nature despised and rejected truth and the reality that is God would turn to him and be

His heart rejoiced in the midst of His most intense suffering as one of the least of humanity was moved by his unselfish act and allowed the spirit of God to bring him to receive Jesus as his savior and lord. Then there is the joy this criminal immediately experienced as he received the grace and salvation of the Lord. As he consciously and deliberately asked for rescue and received the hope of eternal life, the joy that filled his life can only be understood and experienced by those who have made a similar decision. The free gift of salvation comes only as we realize that we are as evil as this thief and deliberately ask Jesus to save us and accept the
same gift of grace. This thief, who most likely did not die that day, could now let go and die in peace with the hope of eternal life. Joy, peace and the ability to lighten up and enjoy God in this troubled world is available to everyone. Like the criminal on the cross we must simply recognize our hopelessness, ask for help from Jesus and receive his grace and we will be given eternal life. Yes, on the cross, there was the joy in the heart of Jesus and a surprised joy in the life of the thief and today there is our joy as we realize how simple it is to receive Jesus and be saved just like the thief. We are no better than the thief on the cross. Our best efforts in doing right and being good can never be enough to get us out of this world alive. Doing good works, attending church, reading scripture, being kind to our neighbors, etc. all are beneficial but they will not change our hearts and make us new people with a deep love for God. One theologian put it, “The thief on the cross stole paradise and Jesus was happy he took it.� This troubled man dying on the cross beside Jesus, in a moment saw the gift of God, recognized his extreme need and seized the opportunity. Accessibility committee visits Safeway Monica Lamb-Yorski Tribune Staff Writer The Williams Lake Accessibility Commitee invited Safeway manager Brad Kristian to its monthly meeting in April to share information about measures the store has taken to include people with diversities in the work force. After the presentation, Kristian said: “In the 18 years I’ve worked for Safeway, I’ve seen many examples of that.” Safeway’s done a good job with its corporate responsibility programs, suggested Kristian, adding he’s
worked in 14 different stores and every one of them has an employee or two that is disabled in some way. “They find great success, they add value to the store, and these individuals boost the moral and make our customers happy. Personally they got a lot of independence,” he says. Including people with disabilities makes communities better and communities that do are better off. It’s also been standard for Safeway stores to make washrooms more accessible and ensure that at least one checkout aisle is wide

enough to accommodate a wheelchair and give ample room to pay for purchases. “We’ve got automatic doors and access ramps to every store in B.C. one way or another. In some cases there are elevators into the stores,” he says. After hearing encouraging comments from the committee, Kristian says he’s inspired to continue with the efforts. “They were rewarding comments to hear and hopefully we’ll continue to have that impression on the community that we serve here and across the province,” he
says. Julie Ams, human resources advisor for Safeway stores in the Interior of B.C., says Safeway has a diversity council that meets regularly. “We talk about ways that we can incorporate people with diversities into our stores. “We have two stores currently that have zero representation of that group and we’re working with those markets to make sure we have those people represented in our stores,” Ams says. The council also includes members with diversities, Ams added.

Political spotlight falls on Cummins T
he information age might have sped up B.C. voters’ mood swings, but the basic dynamic hasn’t changed since the days of Social Credit. When familiarity breeds contempt, people vote to reject the familiar and see what happens. Or as one radio talk-show caller summed up his decision to climb on board the B.C. Conservative bandwagon, he knows two things about leader John Cummins: “He’s not Adrian Dix and he’s not Christy Clark.” It’s been more than 21 years since Gordon Wilson reshaped B.C. politics and launched the modern-day B.C. Liberal Party with a single quip in a leaders’ debate between a bickering Rita Johnston and Mike Harcourt. Cummins has about a year to show he’s earned his rising poll numbers, and to refute the conventional wisdom that he’s the best friend the NDP has had since Wilson put them in power and later joined them. So let’s get to know Cummins a bit better. He’s 70, and has an 18-year record as a Reform-Alliance-Conservative MP. His Ottawa days are mainly remembered for battling treaties and aboriginal-only fisheries, and for being the first Reform MP to reverse himself and take the MP pension. That pension pays him about $100,000 a year as he tries to build a second political career in B.C. Another legacy of Cum-

mins’ federal record is his support for the harmonized sales tax. As he hastens to clarify, he supported Conservative legislation to enter into HST deals with any province, which Ontario and B.C. subsequently did. Cummins said B.C. could have brought in the HST at a lower rate to reflect its broader reach, as Atlantic provinces did. But they tried to make it a “tax grab” and now they’ve “poisoned the well” for many years. “We’re going to have to pay the price I guess, in the sense that where it has been introduced, it has been shown to have grown business,” Cummins said. “Think tanks on both the left and the right have come to that conclusion.” To me this beats the NDP’s crude coffee-shop populism that simply ignores HST benefits for small business and the poor. Speaking of crude, Cummins further distinguishes himself from the B.C. Lib-
erals by endorsing the proposed Northern Gateway oil pipeline to Kitimat. He applauds the federal government for moving to place limits on submissions to federal environment hearings, citing the thousands of Internet sign-ups that have clogged the Northern Gateway hearings. His record on aboriginal issues suggests he has little sympathy for territorial objections from First Nations, those with treaties or those
without. The April 19 by-elections in Port Moody-Coquitlam and Chilliwack-Hope offer a chance for the B.C. Conservatives to present policy alternatives. So far they’re against gas taxes, especially the carbon tax, against a second Metro Vancouver garbage incinerator, and in favour of fixing the “catch and release” justice system. These are the slogans that stand in for actual policies needed to govern.
Cummins will be going door to door in the by-elections, especially in Chilliwack-Hope, where he believes his upstart party has a real shot at winning. He offers a telling anecdote about the last time he was door-knocking in Port Moody, the premier’s former hometown. The B.C. Liberals have suggested the B.C. Conservatives chose Christine Clarke as their candidate to capitalize on the premier’s name recognition. That
wasn’t what Cummins and his previously unknown candidate found when they first started campaigning. “She’d say hi, my name is Christine Clarke, and the doors would close rather quickly,” Cummins said. NDP does forestry test run MLAs from the provincial NDP were in Prince George recently talking to forestry companies and employees to test their forestry platform for next spring’s election. “What Adrian’s asked us to do is to go into forestry communities, test the ideas that we have, make sure that we have detail around them to make sure we can be effective immediately given the opportunity,” forestry critic and Columbia River — Revelstoke MLA Norm Macdonald said of provincial NDP leader Adrian Dix. Macdonald said they were focusing on three main issues: raw log exports, job protection and forest health. “I think that most British Columbians would agree the level of raw log exports is a massive failure of the government,” Macdonald said. “We’re up to 5.5 million cubic metres of wood that’s exported in its raw form. I think most British Columbians would agree we could do better than
simply knock down a tree and put it on a barge.” Macdonald said the NDP would not stop the export of raw log exports, but instead limit it so the province could “get the most out of the resource as possible.” He said in the 11 years of Liberal rule more than 5,700 natural resources and manufacturing jobs have been lost in the region. He attributed part of this loss to the removal of the Jobs Protection Commissioner and the lack of legislative framework to protect jobs. Macdonald said the NDP would bring in framework to keep up employment and protect jobs. He said this would also stop mills from shutting down. “It doesn’t mean you can save every mill, it doesn’t mean that you would necessarily do that, but what we have now is an ad hoc system where certain communities have resources and government participation in trying to save particular jobs and other communities are simply left,” he said. Macdonald was also upset with the health of B.C.’s forests.

“The B.C. Liberals have failed massively in forest health,” he said. “There was a time when the government had the obligation to replant if it was an area that made sense to replant. In 2001 the B.C. Liberals removed the provincial obligation to replant. “The B.C. Liberals removed the obligation and the cut the replanting budget by 90 per cent ... we could have as much as two million hectares of public crown land that should be replanted by the provincial government that remains not satisfactory restocked, which is a technical term that means it should be replanted and it’s not.” Macdonald said he was not satisfied with the work the BC Liberals are doing. “We know that this is our most valuable asset. We know that the responsible thing for a government to do is look after that asset and we know that the BC Liberals have done an exceedingly poor job at that,” he said. “It’s forest health our most valuable resource; they’ve failed to look after it and it’s a comprehensive failure.”

Donations from individuals in 2011 total nearly $70,000, and account for most of the party’s 2011 income. Their biggest donors are Ian G. Pyper and Margaret Pyper, who donated
$5,000 each to the B.C. Conservatives last year. The party also got $5,000 each from Cobra Venture Corp. and Perpetuity Investments Ltd., along with a third corporate donation of $1,000. Both the NDP and B.C. Conservatives call for an end to corporate and union donations to provincial political parties, a rule that already applies to federal parties.

Sixteen new interpretive signs will be unveiled by the Friends of Churn Creek on April 21. “Last year when B.C. facilitated its 100th anniversary celebration we facilitated the building of a new kiosk in the traditional style of a pit house,” says Friends of Churn Creek society director Steve Mazur. “The panels are in the kiosk and detail the natu-
ral, cultural, ranching, settlement and geological history of the area.” In 2012, through the province’s community recreation grant received by the Cariboo Regional District, the society will also build a wheelchairaccessible trail at the kiosk. Mazur says the society will need some help if anyone is interested in volunteering. The society’s AGM takes place on April 21, starting at 10:30 a.m. in the Dog Creek community gym.

A Simple Curve shows Tuesday Krista Liebe The time has come for our last films of the season. On Tuesday, April 17, the Williams Lake Film Club will show two screenings, both having been shot in British Columbia. Our screenings are held at the Gibraltar Room, 7 p.m. Back doors open at 6:30 p.m. We start the evening at 7 p.m. with a segment from Cariboo Country, written by Paul St. Pierre for CBC in the early 60s. This time he will try to answer the question What is a Rancher?, 22 minutes. And again, this is a very special treat, shot right here in the Cariboo, in fact not just in name! Then we will screen our main feature, A Simple Curve, written and directed by Aubrey Nealon from Vancouver, with Kris Lemche and Michael Hogan in the leads. They are both, however, originally from Brampton and Kirkland Lake, Ont., respectively. We love them anyway. The film is rated PG. A Simple Curve plays in New Denver, and the Chutneys and Arrow Lakes provide incredible scenery. This place was a haven for draft dodgers in the early 70s. Jim (Michael Hogan) plays a draft dodger who came with his hippie partner to the Chutneys, building up a woodworking business. His wife is no longer in the picture, but his son Caleb, (Kris Lemche), is now his partner in the business. They were doing well, but times are changing. Money is becoming more important than ideals. This becomes a basis of conflict between father and son. Caleb, 27 years old, is rebelling against his father’s stubborn belief in good, honest work. He wants to progress. He wants to save the business as he argues, and to go much bigger. This possibility seems to present itself when an old friend of his father flies into the area in his own plane, planning to start a big lodge.
Kris Lemche plays Caleb in A Simple Curve being shown by the film club Tuesday. He proposes that Caleb will look after the furniture. To further complicate the situation is the fact that Caleb just recently struck up a tentative relationship with a pretty, single mom. And now a couple of granola types, modern-day hippies, pitch a teepee on their land and the female of the duo gives him a pup tent, with some heavy intentions. This film will bring back many memories to
us here in the Cariboo. It is a film full of gentle humour that manages to poke fun at all the hippie stereotypes while still showing respect for the idealism of the era. To complete the theme of a Cariboo/Chilcotin/ B.C. evening, our own writer Sage Birchwater will have a table set up with his work for you. It is always so interesting to see what he has done and experienced in this wonderful area, and Birchwater loves to
answer all of your questions. And as you know, he is always working on a new project, or two, or three. Refreshments and cookies will be served after the screenings (bring some of your own baked goodies, please) and as it has become a tradition, we will collect food stuff for the food bank. Donate generously — as you always do. See you on Tuesday, April 17. For your information, after the summer break we will start our next season 2012/13 on Tuesday, Sept. 11. The Gibraltar Room has already been booked and I have already started to work on a line-up of interesting films. What would you like to see? Suggestions are always welcome. Admission is $9 regular, $8 members, $6 seniors (65-plus) and students, high school and TRU.

TRU scientist Dr. Tom Dickinson, guest speaker for Scout Island banquet Dr. Tom Dickinson, a respected scientist at TRU, Kamloops, will be the guest speaker at the Scout Island Nature Centre fundraising banquet on April 20. In 1989 Dickinson came to Cariboo College to teach and do research in the biological sciences. In 2009 he was appointed dean of science. He assisted in the development of the Natural Resources Science program and taught the first courses in Wildlife Management. He also was involved in the establishment of the Wells Gray Education and Research Centre. He has actively participated in assisting provincial and local naturalist organizations and developing land-use plans in the Kamloops region. His research interests include bird communities in high elevation forests and energy utilization by nuthatches. He enjoys being a natural historian and bird watcher, and continues to inspire others with these interests. During the banquet,
TRU researcher Dr. Tom Dickinson is the speaker for Scout Island banquet April 20. Dickinson will talk about his travels in Colombia, a country of magnificent beauty and one of the most biologically diverse places on Earth. “This talk will provide a snapshot of Colombia’s rich cultural and ecological diversity as it was revealed to me during a brief visit in 2011,” Dickinson says. “My travels centred on what is called the Coffee Triangle — an area bounded by highland rain-forests of the Western Andes and the towering peaks of the dry Central Andes. “In my talk I will share some insights I got while bird-
ing in this area about the agricultural practices that give rise labels such as ‘bird-friendly’ and ‘fairtrade’ to the coffee from Colombia and I will show some pictures of spectacular avifauna of the region.” He says the economy of Colombia is changing rapidly and as it changes an essential role is being played by a network of Important bird areas and small NGO stewardship groups. “There are many ways in which we in North America can help them in their important work,” Dickinson says. The funds raised by
the banquet will be used to develop nature programs at the Scout Island Nature Centre for school classes, children’s groups and family events throughout the year, says society president Fred McMechan. As well funds will be used to continue with projects to maintain and enhance the trails, and to improve the habitat for wildlife and plants. “The Nature House is a very important interpretive centre where visitors, including tourists, can learn about the wonderful natural world in the Cariboo Chilcotin region,” McMechan says. “To provide this service funding is required to meet such needs as the improvement of the displays, the provision of educational resources and the employment of university students to act as hosts.” Tickets for the banquet may be purchased at the Open Book, the Scout Island Nature House or from members of the Williams Lake Field Naturalists.

Kids Running for Kids fundraising dinner Saturday with Soup Bone DINNER SPECIALS
Angela Manning Kids Running for Kids is hosting a fundraising dinner and silent auction this Saturday, April 14 at the Boston Pizza Sports Bar. Tickets include live music by the local band Soup Bone. Doors Open at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $25 per person and can be bought in advance by calling Karin at 250398-8218. The dinner choices are jambalaya fettuccine, or chicken Parmesan, or ribs. Kids Running for Kids has been busy preparing for their trek to Vancouver this summer. Fundraising has hit a high! Kids Running for Kids originally set a goal of raising $25,000 for B.C. Group runs start next week Continued from A18 Of course, running from Williams Lake to Vancouver takes some physical training. A group of parents have been training for months. You may see these ambitious ladies running alongside Mackenzie Avenue on Sunday mornings. You may have even spotted a few running up Fox Mountain Road. This group of moms are not only training for the KRFK summer adventure, they are in full training for the BMO half marathon next month in Vancouver. Some of the kids have been training with their families and scheduled group runs begin next week. Besides running with their classmates throughout the week, the group of about 70
children will be at the Williams Lake Secondary School track every Sunday until their departure to BC Children’s Hospital. KRFK will have many participants in The Kidsport Classic happening in Williams Lake on Sunday, June 24. The group participated in the Rick Hansen Anniversary Relay, looking sharp in their red jackets. Thanks to Caribou Ski teaming up with Adidas, the group will not only have proper footwear, they will sport team track suits with additional funding from Brandt Tractor and Cariboo Monogramming. KRFK has had much help in preparing for the run. Last week, Pro Physio Works gave of their time and assessed
the runners’ feet, giving advice as to proper running shoes. From there, the runners were helped by the friendly staff at Caribou Ski with sizing. With most of the monetary donations going directly to BC Children’s Hospital, KRFK still has a list

Auditions Sunday for Potato Dreams community theatre project Debra McNie, creator of the Potato Dreams community theatre project, will be holding open-call auditions this Sunday, April 15 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Central Cariboo Arts and Culture Centre next to City Hall. No previous acting experience is required, McNie says. Wear comfortable clothing arrive at 10:45 a.m. and be prepared if possible to stay until 2 p.m. She asks people to keep in mind that make-up and costumes create wonderful magic on stage so. Spring Car Care 2012
Time for a Spring makeover Canada’s long, harsh winters not only add stress to our lives, but also to the systems that keep our vehicles safe and reliable and that means a spring makeover should include more than just cosmetics. While your immediate focus will likely be on restoring your car, van, SUV or truck’s exterior and interior to pristine condition, make sure you also give its mechanical systems a careful onceover to ensure they’re ready to deal with the hot summer weather ahead, particularly if its an older or high mileage vehicle. You can have your service technician do this for you – and many service shops offer spring service special deals but by following some basic procedures you can spot potential problem areas yourself and then
have them dealt with if necessary by a pro. You should have been keeping your vehicle washed regularly to help keep rust at bay, but if you haven’t you need to do so before checking it over as it will be easier to spot damage or problems. A do-it-yourself spring cleaning process also allows you to flush out salt and sand deposits from areas that a quick run through the car wash of-
ten misses. Don’t forget the radiator, which may have become partially clogged with debris. A fine spray and a fairly soft brush with long bristles can help here, but don’t be too aggressive and damage the thin fins. Visually check it for corrosion or leaks. With the engine stopped and cool you can clean the compartment with an engine specific spray cleaner, followed by a rinse (avoiding high
pressure spray on electrical parts). This will not only make this area look good but often reveal problems. Hoses should feel firm, not mushy, be free of obvious cracks and show no evidence of leaking at connections. Belts shouldn’t be cracked, frayed, brittle or glazed looking and should be firmly, but not too tightly tensioned. Make sure the engine is completely cool before you checkcoolant levels. This can usually be done by looking at the reservoir which is marked with maximum and minimum levels. Never remove the radiator cap of a hot engine. If your coolant level is low you can add a 50/50 mixture of anti-freeze and water, but make sure you check it again in a few days and if it is down, or you
Can you replace belts? Look carefully under the hood and you will find that there are probably many belts at the front of the engine. If it’s an older car, you may notice that there are up to three and even four belts to drive all the accessories, including the air conditioning. Many new cars will have only one belt. However, it may still need to be changed, so don’t expect it to get changed on its own! If you do your own car maintenance, you will want to inspect the belts, yourself. And the only way to do so, is visually. You will be looking for a cracked belt or an oil-soaked belt (in this case, it could mean more trouble emerging from elsewhere in the engine compartment). If the belt is glazed, chances are that it needs to be replaced, strictly because it is old and worn. However, if it’s cracked, it needs to be changed very quickly. If you are a car owner
with no specific tools, you my be better off visiting your mechanic who not only has the experience, but also the
proper tools to measure the belt tension and see if the part is even more worn out than it appears.
You can always change the belts yourself, especially if you own an older car with narrow drive belts.

Good tires might be more expensive, but they are also safer

What’s a real off-road tire? Many people buy all-wheel drive or fourwheel drive SUVs with the hope that, one day, they will participate in a real off-road excursion. In the end, most of them will never experience such a trek for fear of damaging their precious light trucks! Arts on the Fly chili cook-off The Arts On The Fly Committee is hosting
the first annual Horsefly Chili Cook Off this Saturday, April 14 at the Horsefly Community Hall at 6 p.m. All local organizations and individuals are invited to enter their best pot of chili and accompanying corn bread. The locals will be there to put them to the test, and vote on the best tasting in both categories. Prizes will also go to those with the best decorated table! Of the three teams from the Cariboo, the Junior A team (made up of Grades 9 and 10 students) won the championship and proudly came home with the trophy.

Cariboo Adventist Academy grade 11 and 12 classes will be hosting a Spring Fling Fundraising Banquet. The evening will be filled with fabulous entertainment, great food and silent auction items to bid on. Tickets are only $15 each or $25 for a couple and $10 for children age 10 and under. The banquet will be from 6-8 pm at the Cariboo Adventist Academy gymnasium. Tickets available at the front office at Cariboo Adventist Academy or from any grade 11 or 12 student.
