City council was expected to give the first three readings to a 13.6 per cent tax increase Tuesday night, despite pleas from some to re-consider the budget. Recommendations by city staff to give first, second and third reading to both the budget bylaw and a tax rates bylaw were on the table at last night’s council meeting, after the Mirror went to press. For the latest updates, visit www.campbellrivermirror.com Both bylaws were expected to pass, as the four councillors who voted in support of the tax increase indicated they were standing by their decisions, despite hearing from 23 people opposed to the tax hike. “While I appreciate them coming forward and giving their perspective, my perspective hasn’t changed,” Coun. Ryan Mennie said after council heard from the first wave of delegations. “I still think I represent a large part of the community with my perspective.” Coun. Mary Storry said she would only change her mind if new information were to come forward. At last week’s council meeting, several members of the public asked city staff to go back and re-consider the budget. Nearly
100 people filled city hall to show solidarity. “They (staff) can go back and find the cuts for you,” said Ray Green, who spoke in opposition of the tax increase. “Just tell them to go back and take another look.” Mark Sullivan, who ran for city councillor in November’s election, had the same message for council. “The people behind me know you’re putting forth your best efforts but please, have another look for us,” he said. But staff did not come up with any new information and instead put a report in front of council asking it to sign off on the budget. “The City of Campbell River conducted its annual Financial Plan deliberations through the Finance Committee meetings from January to April 2012,” said Laura Ciarniello, general manager of corporate services, in the report. “The Five Year Financial Plan Bylaw represents the results of those deliberations on a consolidated basis.” Ciarniello said the result of those discussions is a 13.6 per cent increase, reduced to an overall residential tax increase of 7.10 per cent after factoring in a decrease in the parks parcel tax and garbage collection fees. The budget also reflects some Continued on A3

Electric cars okayed for use a 2011 four-door, fourseater Chrysler Group model. At the time, council needed more information from city staff before proceeding. However, after considering a staff report earlier this month, council adopted a Neighbourhood Zero Emission Vehicles bylaw last week. “I’m pretty happy it’s happening, it’s been a long time coming,” Elliott said on Monday. “It’s a big step forward.”
KRISTEN DOUGLAS CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
Council of ficially gave the green light to electric vehicles last week, but the timing couldn’t be worse for the man who requested the bylaw seven months ago. Stan Elliott, owner of Campbell River Electric Wheels, appealed to the city last September to allow the low-speed electric vehicles on Campbell River streets after his dealership acquired
But it’s unfortunate it didn’t happen sooner. Elliott, who operates his business at 1841 Island Highway in Campbellton, relinquished his dealership status last week in order to re-locate to the Campbell River Common, where the zoning does not allow for a dealership. Instead, Campbell River Electric Wheels will become an agent for Forever Green Electric Cars, based out of Parksville. Elliott said he is able to display
vehicles in his store, but cannot sell them directly, only pass on referrals to Forever Green. “It’s bad timing but it doesn’t matter because we can still display the cars in the mall, we would act as a gobetween,” said Elliott, who has been promoting the advantages of the electric vehicle for some time. “The benefits to the public are enormous,” he said. “It only costs $.02 per mile (1.61 kilometres) to operate. ”

but Elliott said they’re emission free, because instead of guzzling gas, the vehicles are battery-operated and can be left to charge overnight. Elliott said a six or seven hour charge is good for 60 kilometres, depending on the number of hills the car climbs and the outside temperature. The downside to the
vehicles is they don’t come with standard safety features such as airbags, ABS, or shock absorbent body panels – some don’t even come with doors. For that reason, the cars are not allowed to travel more than 40 kilometres per hour and must stay on roads with speed limits of no more than 50 kilometres per hour.

Teachers expected to toe the line on service withdrawal KRISTEN DOUGLAS CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
All Campbell River teachers are expected to honour last week’s B.C. teachers’ vote to withdraw from extracurricular activities, says the head of the local teachers’ association. Public school teachers voted 73 per cent in favour of an action plan to protest Bill 22 – provincial government legislation which teachers say strips away their collective bargaining rights and imposes a governmentappointed mediator to try and settle the ongoing labour dispute. Susan Lambert, BC Teachers’ Federation President said it was an emotional vote for teachers. “Teachers struggle with this...we know this will mean the loss of some highlyvalued activities, and we sincerely regret that,” Lambert said in a release. “But we have to look at the bigger picture and the longer term.” Education Minister George Abbott said the teachers’ action plan will pit teachers who want to continue coaching sports teams and running student clubs against those who will

alterations to services provided, use of the gaming reserve to fund Centennial Pool, an increase in utility rates, capital plan approval and one-time projects funded from reserves. Council voted 4-3 for the tax increase March 27, to help erase a $3.6 million budget deficit. Mayor Walter Jakeway, who ran a zero per cent tax increase election campaign, called for the public to rise up and protest the tax hike immediately following council’s vote. Since then taxpayers have created Facebook pages in protest of council’s decision and staged a demonstration outside city hall prior to the April 3 council meeting. Council is expected to adopt the budget bylaw on May 1 and has until May 15 to submit the budget to the provincial government. For updates on this story visit our website, www.campbellrivermirror.com

follow through on the vote. Neil Thompson, president of the Campbell River District Teachers’ Association, said he doesn’t expect there to be any problems in School District 72, where there was strong support for the action plan. “I’m advising teachers they need to follow the plan,” he said. As for possible repercussions for those teachers who don’t? “I’m not even thinking about that,” Thompson said. “We know for teachers this is not something they want to do, it’s something they have to do to support public education with a government that doesn’t. There’s an expectation out there by the public and, I would argue, senior management, that we must do these things (volunteer activities).” The action plan is effective April 23 to June 30 of this year and could affect Grade 12 g raduation ceremonies and sporting events such as the annual track meet, if school administrators, namely principals and vice-principals, as well as parents, don’t step up to volunteer. But the rules governing pension plans in B.C. are out-of-date, says Stewart, which only leaves the option of rolling the pension investments – somewhere in the neighbourhood of $200 million – into an annuity. Representatives of the pension plans are trying to negotiate with the government to update regulations. “We’ re trying to
make sure we don’t get screwed…but we’re down on the list,” says Stewart. What’s worse, he adds, is the provincial Superintendent of Pensions allowed Catalyst to underfund the pension plan for several years. Stewar t wonders whose rights the superintendent was looking

If the company is re-sold, there’s no obligation for the buyer to top up the shortfall. The retirees would also lose some medical benefits. That puts the pensioners in a situation where they must take their remaining funds and buy an annuity. At the cor porate poker table where bigmoney players from New York are gambling for the future of Catalyst, the “little” guys at the table, the pensioners, feel like they’re being set up to lose. “ T h i s a s t a cke d deck. The sales agreement has already been decided – it just gets worse,” says Terry Stewart of Campbell River. Stewart, 59, retired from the Elk Falls mill operation in 2010. He’s now on a steering committee for Catalyst Salaried Employees and Pensioners, a group with approximately 200 members. There’s also another group of pensioners who’ve worked for the various owners of Elk Falls, the Retired Salaried Employees Association. Catalyst, with more than $800 million in debt, is cur rently under bankruptcy protection and the company’s future is being played out in court. The biggest problem for the pensioners is they’re listed as unsecured creditors. If the secured creditors – i.e. the big money lenders – don’t agree on a restructuring plan, then Catalyst could very well be sold under an agreement known as a “stalking horse bid.” According to Stewart, that bid

Our View
Canucks’ silving lining Well, that was quick. Like removing a bandage with a mighty yank rather than a slow, painful pull, perhaps the Vancouver Canucks’ early exit from the NHL playoffs is for the best. We say: Thanks Despite finishing the regular season with the most points, a Vancouver for second straight run at the Stanley giving us our Cup didn’t seem assured. Questions spring back about the ability of goaltender Roberto Luongo to win big games lingered. The team’s scoring seemed to dry up late in the season. Its powerplay had been dormant since January. And coach Alain Vigneault’s penchant for
juggling line combinations nearly every game meant you couldn’t tell whom would be playing with whom without a program. The reunion of the Sedin twins in game four against the Los Angeles Kings after Daniel had missed more than a month with a head injury gave the Canucks a win and their fans a glimmer of hope. But in the end, it just delayed the inevitable. Now while mighty hockey markets like Nashville, St. Louis and possibly even Phoenix battle on for hockey’s biggest prize, the local airwaves, bar stools and sports pages are alive with second guessing and speculation about the future of various Canucks’ players, the coach, even the general manager.
The Canucks may not have given us the drama and excitement of another Stanley Cup run, but pause for a moment to think about what they have given us. Instead of being cooped up inside through May and early June watching hockey games, we’ll be able to enjoy our spring evenings in the garden or on the patio. Police can keep their riot shields and batons in storage. Businesses in downtown Vancouver won’t have to stockpile plywood to protect their windows. We can be spared the sight of those ubiquitous car flags flapping in the breeze. Thank you Vancouver Canucks for breaking our hearts yet again. And giving us our spring back. – Black Press
Capital campaign continues The Tidemark 25 Capital Campaign Committee has launched the next stage fundraising goal with new focus on individual seat naming opportunities and local business or corporate sponsorships. The first stage of the campaign, which allows the Tidemark to qualify for $306,000 in approved grant monies, has been achieved with over $62,000 raised through March 31. A large portion of those funds was raised through the wildly successful “$100 Silver Brick” campaign and various other fundraising events. The Tidemark Theatre hopes to reach the half way mark ($125,000) of their capital campaign by June 30 with another $125,000 by December 3 totaling $250,000. The Silver Brick Campaign ($100) and Seat sponsorships ($500) each are continuing with over 366 bricks and 52 seats already sponsored. “There are only 435 total seat naming opportunities, so we are happy to have such a good start” reports Denise Mitchell, Campaign Co-Chair. Local Scotia Bank employees have pooled their funds together to sponsor two seats totaling $1000. Local businesses and theatre supporters are encouraged to start office or local community organization pools to raise money for theatre seats! The theatre expects a “sample” seat to arrive and be Continued on A9

Imagining an NDP government after byelection wins
Tom Fletcher B.C. Views
NDP victories in two byelections bring the standings in the legislature to 46 B.C. Liberals, 36 NDP and three independents, one of whom has pledged allegiance to the B.C. Conservatives. B.C. Conservative leader John Cummins put a brave face on his third-place finish in Port MoodyCoquitlam and Chilliwack-Hope. Even in bedrock conservative Fraser Valley farm country, in a protest byelection with a high-profile candidate, the B.C. Conservatives managed to attract just enough to deliver a landmark NDP seat. The NDP was helped by the absence of the B.C. Green Party on the byelection ballots, with most of its five-percent support from 2009 presumably
going to the winners. Cummins said his party’s goal going into the Port Moody-Coquitlam vote, with an unknown candidate and a handful of volunteers, was to break 10 per cent. They got 15 per cent and he declared a moral victory. Cummins rejected a possible merger with the “discredited” B.C. Liberals. Premier Christy Clark was equally emphatic that she will be the leader of the “free enterprise coalition” in the 2013 election. So the stage is set for an NDP majority government. What will that look like? Well, Port Moody mayor-turned-MLA Joe Trasolini has a wealth of local government experience, so pencil him in as municipal affairs minister. A long-time supporter of the B.C. Lib-
erals, Trasolini should clarify if he endorses the NDP constitution, which still opposes all profit-making activity. He’s not the only high-profile newcomer likely to be included in an Adrian Dix cabinet. New NDP candidates from union executive ranks will likely include long-time Hospital Employees’ Union president Judy Darcy. She no longer talks about bringing a “Marxist analysis” to economic matters. Darcy is now best known for leading the long court battle against the B.C. Liberal government’s contract-breaking legislation of 2002. The eventual decision of the Supreme Court of Canada basically invented a constitutional right to col-
lective bargaining. (The high court could also ponder if there might be a right not to belong to a union, but that’s another story.) Then there’s George Heyman, the long-time B.C. Government Employees’ Union president. After leaving the BCGEU, Heyman has taken a turn as executive director of Sierra Club B.C., a branch plant of the U.S. enviro-machine that works against B.C. forest, mining, power and petroleum development. These folks would be working with Stephen Howard, who went from senior positions at the BCGEU and CUPE to his current role as Dix’s chief of staff. Dix, of course, benefited from the sudden ouster of Carole Continued on A9

Excessive speed This isn’t the way to start your driving career. On Friday, while patrolling the Inland Island Highway, a Mountie clocked a northbound vehicle travelling at 153 kilometres an hour. When the officer was finally able to pull the vehicle over, the driver turned out to be 17 years old and only has his learner’s licence. The other problem was he didn’t have his driver’s licence on him. He was charged with excessive speeding, driving contrary to licence restriction and failing to produce a driver’s licence. His vehicle was also impounded for seven days and the fine for
excessive speeding ranges from $368-$483. This was the second vehicle RCMP had impounded last week due to excessive speeding.
POLICE BEAT
Grossly intoxicated
Calls from the public alerted police to an impaired driver on Saturday around 7:30 p.m. The male driver was found downtown and was heavily intoxicated, blowing two-and-ahalf times over the legal limit. His vehicle was impounded and he’s now facing criminal charges, along with fines. In total, police arrested three impaired drivers last week.

Fletcher: Experience extracting public money Continued from A8 James, who made the mistake of trying to loosen big labour’s grip on the NDP and modernize some of its quaint 1930s notions. T h e n w e h ave B.C.’s third-largest political party, the B.C. Teachers’ Federation, which has
already confirmed it will continue its long campaign to replace the B.C. Liberals with the NDP next year. Such a team brings impressive experience, but unfortunately for taxpayers, much of that experience has been in extracting money from the public
treasury. And if recent B.C. history is any guide, this fundamental conflict of interest will receive little or no media attention in the months to come. Instead, the conventional wisdom will be that voters want “change.”
• Correction: Last week’s column referred to the 1971 Greenpeace campaign against atmospheric nuclear testing. That protest boat was directed at a U.S. nuclear test off Alaska, not a Soviet test as stated. Subsequent Greenpeace protests targeted

the Soviet slaughter of grey whales, and the last atmospheric nuclear tests, conducted by France in the South Pacific.

Couple takes on the fight against cancer KRISTEN DOUGLAS CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
Jacob Koomen’s f r i e n d s h ave b e e n questioning his sanity lately. That’s because he’s
planning to ride his bike from Kelowna to Delta – in just one day. And it’s happening just one week after he cycles from Vancouver to Seattle. “People have said to
me, ‘you’re doing that in just one day? You’re crazy,’” Jacob laughs. “And I just say ‘yeah, I know I’m crazy.’” That’s when his wife Jannie chimes in. “I’ve known it for 47 years, and people don’t believe me.” Jacob may call himself crazy, but he’s also dedicated – to his cycling and to the fight against cancer. The 400 kilometre, one day bike ride, dubbed Ride2Survive, benefits the Canadian Cancer Society. Due to traffic regulations, all 100 cyclists in the ride must keep pace with one another so they reach the finish line at the same time. Ride2Survive leaves
Kelowna at 3:30 a.m. on June 23 and winds up in Delta at 10 p.m. Jacob, who rides from his home in Willow Point to the Marine Harvest office at Discovery Harbour each week day and puts in 100 kilometres of cycling every weekend, said he’s not worried about trying to keep up with the other riders. “I can’t wait to do it,” he said. “I love riding my bike and when I can do it for a great cause, it’s even better.” And Jacob will have had more than enough practice by the time the ride rolls around. The weekend prior, Jacob and Jannie will ride their tandem bike in the Enbridge Ride to
Conquer Cancer, a twoday (June 16-17), 290 kilometre trek through the scenic Pacific Northwest, in support of the BC Cancer Society. The Koomens have participated all four years the ride has been in existence, but nearly pulled out this year. “Last year was the toughest year for us to get funds together,” Jacob said. “It was bad because it rained both days and it was cold. It was ugly.” But things changed after a couple they met through the ride said they would personally donate $600 to the Koomens in exchange for their participation. “I couldn’t say no to
him,” Jacob said smiling. “Plus, you talk to those who have had cancer and that’s a lot worse, way worse. When we realize what cancer patients have to go through, the weather is nothing.” Jacob has seen how ugly cancer can be. Two site managers he worked with at Marine Harvest lost their battle with cancer within months of each other two years ago. Jannie, who runs a porceline doll making business, had one of her students die from cancer two years ago and lost her brother to the disease in 2006 when he was 59. Jannie said when the couple rides, all of their spirits are with them
in a pack at the back of the bike. But in order to ride, the Koomens need some help from the community. Jacob and Jannie must raise a combined $5,000 for the Ride to Conquer Cancer plus Jacob has to chip in another $2,500 for the Ride2Survive.The Koomens will be collecting pledges outside the liquor store in Willow Point on Sat., April 28 and outside the liquor store in Mariner Square (Save-On Foods mall) on Sat., May 12. Donations can also be made to the Koomens through www.conquercancer. ca, click on Donate and type in Jannie or Jacob Koomen.

ALISTAIR TAYLOR/THE MIRROR
For the sixth consecutive year, the annual Campbell River Garden Contest is on again. Recent budget cuts at city hall did not affect the annual garden contest. That’s because the Communities in Bloom committee invited the Campbell River Garden Club to take over the annual Campbell River Garden Contest last Fall. And, thanks to a grant in aid from the Strathcona Regional District this year’s contest will be an event to remember. This year’s contest has been expanded to include Area D residents and businesses. Entry is free, and includes prizes as well as an invitation to the awards presentation at the Maritime Heritage Centre. Categories include: children and
youth gardens, community plots, residential large & small, patio gardens, balconies, business property or street frontage; and multiresidential complexes. For complete details, you can pick up an entry form at Ladybug Greenhouse, Willows Market, Sticks ‘n Stones Nursery, Campbell River Garden Centre, Sportsplex, Community Centre and the parks office. The entry form is also available online at www.campbellrivergardenclub.com The deadline for entry is 4 p.m. on May 25. Judging will take place between June 1-15, and all contest entrants will be invited to attend the awards presentation on July 13 at 6:30 p.m. at the Maritime Heritage Centre.
Ready for a new season of paddling Members of the River Spirit dragon boat team held an open house at the Campbell River Common on Saturday. Paddlers compete in festivals and participate in local events to bring hope to the thousands of Campbell River citizens whose lives have been touched by cancer. They hope, by our example, to encourage others faced with a life threatening diagnosis to embrace “life, love & laughter.” For more information, e-mail teamriverspirit@gmail.com or visit www.riverspirit.ca

HOROSCOPES
The week of April 22 – 28, 2012 ARIES
LIBRA
This week you will have to spend quite a lot of time on the telephone or on the road. You are also sorely tempted to buy yourself a new car. Think things over before making a purchase.
Expect some kind of improvement at work, such as a raise or a promotion. Your future looks very promising.
You feel like spoiling yourself with some expensive treats. Focus on spending your money wisely and opt to purchase things that will last a long time.
SAGITTARIUS
You will encounter lots of action and unexpected developments, both professionally and personally. You have a welldeveloped sense of initiative.
CANCER
CAPRICORN
You could feel an accumulation of fatigue this week. Rest and take a bit more care of yourself. Look at your engagements and see where you are perhaps giving a little bit too much of your energy.
Work is a priority for you this week. Perhaps you should work some extra hours. Even at home you’ll have a bit more cleaning up to do than usual.
LEO You will receive some interesting invitations to go out from loved ones. A more active social life will do you some good, so take advantage of these occasions to party.
PISCES
VIRGO You might stumble upon a great travel opportunity for the near future. It might even involve spending the summer abroad or travelling for business reasons.

Pottery for everyone $220,000 in Awards Available for NIC Students Deadline looms for applications Over 300 NIC students are positively impacted each year by the financial support they receive from the donors who contribute to the North Island College Foundation. To a student, receiving an award can mean slightly lower debt or working less and focusing on their studies more throughout the school year. Sometimes it can even be the difference between the opportunity for a post-secondary education or not. It can change a life.
When Tree Murdock, a recent graduate of NIC’s Bachelor of Business degree program, applied for support through the NIC Foundation in 2008, she was about to complete her diploma and was considering further education but unsure of what her next steps would be. “When I got the letter from the Foundation saying I was an award recipient, I was pretty excited,” says Murdock. “It just got me so stoked again. I felt I could follow my dreams and that there were people out there who wanted to see me follow them. And achieve them.” N I C Fo u n d a t i o n awards are available to students planning

to attend North Island College for the first time in September 2012, as well as to continuing and graduating NIC students. Scholarships are awarded based on high academic standing while bursaries are available to students who demonstrate financial need. North Island College Awards booklets, which outline all available awards, are accessible online, from any NIC campus, or from high school guidance offices. The application form is also available online at www.nic. bc.ca. “As a student, the process of applying for bursaries and scholarships through the NIC Foundation helps
you focus on the real reason you need the financial support, on what you want to do with your education,” explains Murdock, 2008 recipient of the CanWest Global Communications Bursary and current employee of ECOdynamic Solutions Inc., Building Links and 1stView. “It makes you reflect on where your current education will take you and what you still hope to achieve.” The deadline for applications is April 30. For more information about NIC Awards or for questions or assistance with the application process, contact Beth Turner at 250-334-5000 x 4267 or email foundation@nic. bc.ca.

The Long Weekend
The City of Campbell River Parks, Recreation & Culture Department is offering spring pottery classes for everyone. If you’ve never worked with clay, there is no better time than now to try. These classes are taught by Joan Grimm and Jacquie Clark. Their artistic talents are very evident as they mold and sculpture incredible works of art from lumps of clay. A wide variety of techniques will be taught including pinch pots, slab work, sculpting and wheel work. Friday classes begin on April 27, and run from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday classes begin April 30 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and evening classes from 6 to 8:30 p.m. One session includes six classes for $116 – or $104 if you are a teenager or 50+ member. BBB warns…Fake reviews can mislead shoppers Many are written by professional writers The Better Business Bureau (BBB) is advising consumers to be skeptical when reading online reviews of businesses, products and services. C o r n e l l U n iv e r sity reports that many reviews are written by professional writers or even employees who are paid to put a positive spin on a review or to post bad reviews of competitors. Researchers also found that humans have a hard time distinguishing fake reviews from real
ones. “The Internet makes it easy to research products and services before we buy,” said Rosalind Scott, Executive Director of the BBB of Vancouver Island. “But sometimes reviews can give buyers a false sense of security about the product or service they’re looking for. You need to take time to understand what you’re buying and who you’re buying from before you place an order.” Telltale signs of fake
reviews may include vague or awkward phrasing or testimonials that seem too enthusiastic to be believable. Some reviews may be identical or nearly so. A few online retailers have policies that ban reviews by people who have a financial stake in the company or product that’s being reviewed. These sites should explain their policies on reviews, possibly on the “about us” section of the website. If the product is widely available, you may be able to find other online reviews that you can compare with reviews on a company’s own website. BBB Business Reviews by contrast,

are verified by BBB staf f and include details of any complaints against a company and show how the company responds to complaints. Companies are asked to provide basic information about their businesses. The BBB assists businesses and consumers in resolving their disputes, providing mediation and arbitration. You can look up BBB B u s i n e s s Rev i e w s for company’s across North America by visiting vi.bbb.org and selecting “Check Out a Business or Charity.” Some red flags to look for that may indicate that other business reviews are fake:
■ Look at the reviewer’s name. If it has several numbers at the end, it may be a sign of robotic review-writing software. If the name resembles a business or product name, it could be written by someone being paid for reviews. ■ While you have the name in mind, check to see whether the same reviewer has written reviews of other products in the same category. Try plugging the reviewer’s name or nickname into a search engine to check for repeat reviews. ■ On some sites you can click on a reviewer’s name to see a profile and previous reviews.

■ Check the adjectives. If a review is loaded with effusive, positive writing with lots of exclamation points, it’s probably a fake review. Real people seldom gush over products, and they often share the cons as well as the pros of their experience. ■ Beware of perfection in writing. If the review sounds like an ad, it probably is. ■ Watch out for too many five-star ratings. Businesses seldom please everyone all of the time. ■ Look for bad grammar or misused words. These could be signs that the reviews have been outsourced to a country where Eng-

Ron James delivers, but don’t ask for pizza PAUL RUDAN
CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
Ron James knows why he made the cut. “It’s not because the prime minister loves me,” says one Canada’s favourite comics. While other CBCTV shows got the ax when the federal Conservative government decided to hatchet away the Crown corporation’s funding, James’ half-hour bucket of laughs “The Ron James Show” survived. Here’s how in his own words, “We’re cheap.” Of course there’s far more to that than just a “cheap laugh.” “And we deliver!” he adds. James, of course, is referring to laughs, not pizza. But just in case the bean counters change their mind and ask James to deliver hot pies on Friday night, he’s getting the heck out of Hogtown. James leaves Toronto today and will kickoff his latest tour of B.C. on Thursday in Campbell River at the Tidemark Theatre before
shuf fling south to Courtenay for a Friday night engagement at the Sid Williams Theatre. The Island crowds have always been big fans of James’ thoughtful, insightful and rapid-fire style of humour. He returns to the Island every couple of years, but he’s usually so busy he doesn’t have time to have his own fun. That’s changing on this trip west. He has a couple days off, so he’s planning to hire a salmon fishing charter, just to cast a line and chill out on the water. He’ll need the down time because James is still hot with the feds for slashing arts funding. “You know, all we artists do is bring $11 billion into this country,” he says with a sigh during the phone interview. “A lot of people lost their jobs…I think the cuts were personal and vindictive.” But on a completely dif ferent note, the Toronto Maple Leafs fan was glad to see the Vancouver Canucks bounced in round one

of the playoffs. And, no, it’s not because James despises the ‘Nucks, it’s because if they kept winning, g ame seven probably would have been played on Thursday night when he opens his first show. “They sure gave us some wiggle room,” he says with a laugh. “I believe in the Leafs which is like believing in the immaculate birth…both are a bit of a stretch.” He’s rooting for the Ottawa Senators now (“because they’re Canadian”) but hasn’t embraced this year’s style of anything-goes hockey. “A m I w a t c h i n g hockey or a ca g e match?” he wonders aloud. “And you’ve got a guy like Chara out there who’s 7’2” on skates. It’s like having a villain from a James Bond movie!” James’ standup routines run from 90 minutes to two hours, providing an “eclectic buffet of choices for everyone.” ■ Tickets are $51 at the Tidemark. The show starts at 8 p.m.

Fascinating photo and publishing workshops at museum O n Thursday, May 3, the Museum will be offering two exceptional workshops running concurrently from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Both will include coffee breaks and lunch. If you have needed any help in managing your photo collection, facilitator and Family
History consultant Brenda Smith is offering a workshop entitled Photo Collections: Share the Treasure. Smith will include an overview of the history of photographs and photographers, and will discuss the evolution of image technology. She will also address conservation concerns
and methods, and how to manage your collection. The other workshop entitled ‘Taking Your Story to Print’ is being presented by local author and publisher Jocelyn Reekie. This is a terrific opportunity to find out about the process of self-publishing, and how to get your writ-
ing into print. Reekie will cover such topics as: getting a manuscript ready, editing and design options, and choosing from the range of publishing options available. As part of the presentation, Catherine Gilbert, published author and promotions coordinator for
the Museum, will offer suggestions on how to promote your work and get it noticed. As part of this workshop, there will be a panel discussion in the afternoon on the variety of choices and experiences that authors and publishers encounter. The panel will be lead by moderator
Jean Wilson, formerly of UBC Press. The participating panelists are from the publishing world and include Ann Kask of Campbell River’s Ptarmigan Press. The workshops are being offered as part of the British Columbia Historical Federation (BCHF) Conference taking place
from May 3-6, and the public is welcome to register. The cost for either workshop is $50 per person, or $40 for members of the BCHF. For further information and to register call the Museum at 250-287-3103 or register online through the Museum website www.crmuseum.ca.

Local group helps men deal with abuse April 22-28 is National Victims of Crime Awareness Week. Because the impact of crime is not always visible, we might not recognize that people in our lives are suffering. Even far more likely to escape our awareness is the fact that boys and men are often victims of violent crime and abuse. Violence and abuse take many for ms: childhood neglect, bullying in schools and in the workplace, emotional, physical and sexual abuse perpetrated by family members or figures of authority, witnessing violence, abusive partnerships, and even secondary trauma experienced when a loved one has been affected by violence. These problems are more common than we realize. For sexual abuse alone, it is estimated that one boy in five is abused by the age of 18. There are many messages and expectations out there that “real men” must always be tough, independent and in control. Unfortunately these beliefs have caused many boys and men to suffer in silence. Some men affected by abuse have reported feeling isolated, angry, anxious and sad. Other dif ficulties experienced have included insomnia, less concen-

Ripple Rock club showcases Island stones Vancouver Island has been in existence for hundreds of millions of years. It was formed through various processes including tectonic plate movement, volcanism, erosion and glaciation. Much of our Island rock originated near the equator in the Pacific Ocean. Some of the oldest Vancouver Island rocks were formed by undersea lava deposits. This material drifted north eastward and collided with the North American continent.
Later, two smaller pieces of crust called Pacific Rim and Crescent terrains collided with and joined onto Vancouver Island. The glacial process affecting the formation of Vancouver Island consisted of large glaciers and ice sheets. These ice sheets cut major features into the landscape. About 15,000 years ago these ice sheets and glaciers slowly melted and caused the land to be exposed when previously it was submerged. These Island stones

that one can find these same stones.” Vancouver Island has a few active mines. In times past, there were many more mines than are in operation today. These mines are in production to process metals such as iron, silver, zinc and gold; others are mining coal. One of our most popular Vancouver Island stones for Rockhounders is our Flowerstone. This is a porphyry stone that is found in abundance in and around the Campbell River area. The stone is unique to this part of the Island and isn’t found in many other places worldwide. When the Ripple Rock club has visitors from other parts of the world it is sure to show them these wonderful creations of nature. For more information visit www.ripplerockgemandmineralclub.com
