At a monthly school board meeting last night trustees voted unanimously in favour of the longer break, which had been brought to public consultation at meetings earlier this month in Terrace, Kitimat and Hazelton. Saying the public response to the two-week break was largely positive, Kitimat trustee Ray Raj brought the motion forward. “This is not a money saving thing,” Raj said, noting that the change would be approved for only for one year right now.

The issue was brought up at the March school board meeting because a two-week break would offer students and their families more time to travel or leave the area. Concerns on parents and guardians finding alternative care for their children was also discussed. However, support for the additional time off was largely positive during the public consultations, prompting the board to go ahead with the amended calendar. The move to adopt a two week break is welcome news to the Kitimat District Teachers Association (KDTA), whose president, Reid Nelson, spoke in favour of the proposal at the public consultation in Kitimat. “At the consultation meeting the [KDTA] expressed

their enthusiasm for a two week spring break for a variety of reasons,” said Nelson. “One of those would be the availability to improve travel in and out of the community at that time of the year. Another one expressed specifically by teachers was the amount of time necessary to recuperate.” He continued, “We’re really enthusiastic. We appreciate that the board has gone this route. It looks like a real plus.” Newly-sworn in Kitimat trustee Linda Campbell asked if non-teaching staff paid by the hour would be affected, and board chair Art Erasmus said an agreement had been made with their union, the Canadian Union of Public Employers, so the longer break will be of no cost to workers. continued on page 2

Jack Oviatt was on hand to request that council decide at the meeting to approve the permit so that he could give the project the green light to his crew immediately after. “In my mind this project is a win-win for Kitimat as a whole,” he told council. He said the project was an ambition of his that he wanted to see finished before he lost his drive. “We want to supply the product to Kitimat at no increased cost and hopefully at a reasonable price,” he said, reinforcing that it’s a not-forprofit project. With a project life of six to 10 years, he said the value of the project is estimated to be up to $10 million with the land itself costing about $400,000. Council unanimously passed the permit application, which calls for a layout having yards of five metres or more between buildings.

He’s not sure what purchasing a home would have been like at the exact time, but he did find a place to purchase the following year, in 1981. Yolland, a rugby player himself, eventually connected with the local rugby club at the bar following a game and was introduce to a man named Malcolm Smith who offered Yolland an opportunity to rent a suite from his home. “I [had] just met the guy,” said Yolland. Meanwhile Iannarelli worked his contacts to find Yolland something more permanent and finally a unit opened up at the townhomes that are across from what is today Doris’ Delica-

Cameron Orr To Kitimat-local Cliff Yolland the housing market today seems to be closely shadowing Kitimat’s housing situation from the early 1980s. Back in 1980, when Yolland first came to Kitimat, taking a job with the District’s recreation department, he faced a market that had absolutely no room for new arrivals. “There was zero per cent vacancy [for rentals],” he said. Today, the Canada Mortgage and Housing’s rental market report for October 2011 (the most recent) list apartment vacancy at four percent among all types of apartments. At that time the Methanex plant was being built, and a work camp was set up, just as there is one today for Rio Tinto Alcan’s modernization, although the scale was not so large back in the 80s. The situation was so bad that for the first week in town Yolland was lodged on the hotel room floor of his boss, former director of recreation Joe Iannarelli. Iannarelli had rented a room at the Aluminum City Motel while his own home

Get the antacids, there’s gas pain One of my favourite games is to figure out exactly how much worse off I am when gas prices go up. Well, not so much a game as a morbid sense of curiosity. I was inspired to revisit this past time when the gas station across the street from my home raised their price to $1.329 a litre, matching the rest of the stations in town. What I usually do is take a baseline gas tank — a 50 litre one for the purposes of my experiment — and figure out how much it costs to fill. At $1.329 a litre, it’s $66.45. So now I take that and figure out how much more I’m paying from the last time I filled. Before the price went up this last time it was $1.299 a litre. At that price filling a 50 litre tank was $64.95. I can now feel better that it really only increases the cost to fill by $1.50 for each entire tank of gas. At such incremental raises it makes me feel better that it really only accounts for a cup of coffee. Except I sometimes torture myself by doing historical changes. Remember when gas was only a dollar? (Yeah, I know, I’ll get to the pre-dollar days shortly.) Well, it’s easy enough to figure out that a 50 litre tank would cost $50 dollars. So compared to that “good old day” I’m paying an extra $16.45 to fill a tank. And hey, lets look way back, to about 2006 or so, when gas was still only 80 cents. To fill my hypothetical gas tank would have cost $40. So in the span of six years I’m paying an extra $26.45 a tank. So that’s just more than $4 per year extra since 2006 to fill my 50L gas tank each time. Or an extra $104 a year based on filling it every two weeks. Finally, if I times that $4 increase over the next six years, that’s an extra $24 a tank. So if the current trend continues, in 2018 it’ll cost me $90.45 to fill a 50 litre gas tank. That’s about $1.80 a litre. I might not even worry about that if the experts weren’t suggesting $1.60 a litre this year alone. That trend, it seems, won’t continue. It’ll get worse. Cameron Orr

We are still awaiting the dissolution of the HST as required by the results of the referendum. I think government says this will be returned to the old GST/PST combination by April 1, next year. Will that happen on time – again, I have to look at the record of actions and words. There’s a possibility that this current government might not be around to do it. The latest polls put the NDP away out in front, but the B.C. Conservative Party also continues to make gains and are now reckoned to be tied with the sinking Liberals. It seems to me we won’t be debating which government will be the best in the coming election, but which would be the worst? That’s not a prospect I relish considering the performance of our last several governments on both sides of the political spectrum. Continued on page 5

Twenty years of Hospice Contributed Kitimat Hospice Palliative Care Association is celebrating 20 years in Kitimat. The nonprofit association consists of an executive, directors, trained and screen hospice visits, a volunteer coordinator and an office/activities volunteer. Working from their office on the second floor of the City Centre Mall, their goal is to help support people living with terminal illness and their caregivers, both

in the hospital and home setting, while respecting confidentiality and personal beliefs. Referrals are accepted from members of the public, doctors, nurses, home support, family, friends, clergy or any other concerned person. Our motto is “You are not alone ... asking for help can make a difficult road easier.” From May 6 to May 12 the Hospice Association will have a display table outside their office and the public is invited to take

a look. Other planned activities this year are a Hike for Hospice on May 26, a 20th anniversary celebration in October and the annual Tree of Life booth at the mall during the Christmas season. This experimental program will provide access to halibut beyond the limits of the standard recreational license as well as the opportunity to continue fishing if the standard recreational fishery were to close early, giving those who choose to participate greater stability for business planning purposes. Riots costly to taxpayers

Continued from page 4 So far, as the Vancouver Canucks stumble through the first round of the 2012 NHL playoffs, we read that the riot that followed the Canucks loss in the seventh game of the Stanley Cup final in 2011, has cost Vancouver police (i.e. B.C. taxpayers) approximately $9 million. But not to worry, $5 million of that would have been spent on wages etc. of officers doing other work, if they didn’t have a riot to investigate. Only about $2 million went to overtime and additional costs. Plus, $2 million was spent by other police forces (i.e. BC taxpayers).

You’ll remember Police Chief Jim Chu wanted to make sure “we get it right.” Doing good – so far some 508 charges have been recommended, and 225 have been approved and launched, including 85 against rioters. Am I reading this right? Who are the other charges against? Another hundred charges are pending. Three people have already pleaded guilty. The good news, the provincial government (i.e B.C. taxpayers again) has come up with a $1 million to help with the investigation. ahewitson@telus.net

Geo-tech engineer comfortable with pipeline Cameron Orr A geotechnical engineer working for Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipelines told Kitimat Council that, from a personal perspective, he wouldn’t work with the company if he didn’t believe the pipeline could be constructed safely. The engineer, Drum Cavers, was in town for a talk to the Kitimat Chamber of Commerce and then later to Kitimat Council for a shortened version of his presentation. Covering a variety of subjects relating to the landscape that the proposed pipeline would face from Bruderheim, Alberta to Kitimat, Cavers set out work that has been done to mitigate the risks, which range from rock slides to earthquakes. On the subject of earthquakes, Cavers said that the nearest coastal plate is 300 km away, west of Haida Gwaii. In 1918, he said, there was a 6.0 earthquake about 300 km south of the proposed route, near Valemont. On the route itself, there

is no known active faults that could break the surface, he said. The welded steel pipeline, he said, would be very resistant to seismic motion. One of the ways they’ve routed the pipeline is with a technology called LIDAR, which essentially allows them to map the surface with lasers, taking away obstructions such as trees. The maps that produce let geologists see areas of potential rock slides and allows them to adjust the route, which has been done at several spots. For the Kitimat Valley one of the larger concerns is groundwater blow-off, where the pressure of groundwater has the potential to push on the pipe. Drainage will be the key to addressing that issue, he said. And as for snow, snow avalanches are not a concern for pipeline safety with how it has been designed, he said. Rock falls in the Kitimat Valley is another area of focus for designers and Cavers said that areas of known rock falls

will be reinforced to reduce the risk of affect on the pipe. As for the terminal, it has been relocated to avoid large clay deposits they would otherwise have to deal with. When Cavers made his presentation to Kitimat Council, the subject of Nimbus Mountain came up, a subject of discussion from earlier meetings. On that subject, Cavers said that there are some slides along the corridor to Nimbus Mountain but that the pipeline would be built well below and sideways from affected areas. Responding to questions from Phil Germuth, Cavers said that he couldn’t guarantee no pipeline spill but still believed in the project. “There’s no absolute guarantee for anything in life. What we are doing is making the risk... very, very low,” he said. He added that based on his love of west coast life he wouldn’t be involved with the pipeline if he thought it was unsafe.

PTP pipe allowed to grow The Pacific Trails Pipeline has been okayed for a larger pipe diameter. The Environmental Assessment Office (EAO) published a decision note that said that it is okay for the pipe to grow from its original proposed 914 mm diameter, to a new 1066.8 mm.

The decision, signed by Derek Sturko, associate deputy minister and executive director, noted that the “EAO is satisfied that the change in diameter does not hold the potential for significant adverse effects.” The document as said that the EAO believes that this amendment will not im-

pact “asserted Aboriginal rights or treaty rights.” The decision pointed out that the larger pipe is not in place to increase the flow of gas but rather to reduce friction of gas movement, “and therefore energy usage and operational costs.”

Edith Alta Giesbrecht January 6, 1920 - April 6, 2012 I’ve planted many a kernel of wheat, Welcomed many a morning sun, And many seasons. As I’ve trudged once more through the field of my years, and separated the chaff from the grain. I thank the Lord, and say in my heart that I’d do it all over again. With sincere thanks and appreciation to the wonderful staff and caregivers at Kitimat General Hospital and Mountainview Lodge for their kindness and care shown to Edith.

Edith is forever in our hearts, never forgotten. Family and friends will celebrate Edith’s life at the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Kitimat on April 27 at 2:00 pm with Pastor Clint Magnus officiating.

All are welcome.

October 24, 1989 - January 31, 20122 Oc Grace was born in Black River Matheson, Ontario on OOctober 24, 1989, the third of four children, Etta, Annie, and Dylan River. Her Dad, Trafford, grew up in Iroquois Falls Ontario and her Mum in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. Grace is a Kitimat girl, raised here since kindergarten. She was a French Immersion student of Cormorant and Mount Elizabeth Schools, and a student of North West Community College where she studied graphic design. Subsequently and proudly she was a Fine Arts student of Thompson River University in Kamloops. Grace was an accomplished artist and cartoonist with great joy and insight. She taught cartooning at Riverlodge and designed and illustrated her own cards and comics. Grace travelled the world: Africa, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. She loved the family cottage at Nellie Lake, but mostly she was a West Coaster. She loved the support of her family and friends in Kitimat, the independence and warmth of Kamloops and the vibrancy and culture of Vancouver. Grace was loving and very loved. Her presence lit up a room and touched everyone she met. We will miss her gentle, creative and courageous free spirit. We are heartbroken she has left us. Teamwork leads Haisla Women to win Cameron Orr The adage that the word ‘team’ stands for ‘Together Each Achieves More’ proved true for the Haisla Senior Women basketball team, who came in first in the ladies division at the Cultural Warming Kitimat/Kitamaat Basketball Tournament. Team Captain Deanna Smith credited a spike in experience for the team over the past month which has seen them participate in four tournaments. That experience was crucial for the women to rank where they did. “This past weekend was our fourth tournament in a row,” said Smith. Their last tournament was in Kamloops, where they placed in second place. Winning in a tournament down south was a big achievement for the team. In fact they were able to defeat Nanaimo in that tournament, the same team the women lost to at the All Native Tournament in Prince Rupert. Smith said that the Cultural Warming started a little rocky when they lost their first game by just a few points. But their teamwork pulled together in time for a first place win. Their skill on the court dampened the Prince Rupert Rain in the final, by 16 points. She said this last tournament was “the end result of all the tournaments we’ve gone to because you could tell

the difference between our team and the team we played in the final.” The Haisla Braves Senior Men team came within grasp of the coveted first place spot but settled for second against Prince Rupert Lights Out. Quinton Nyce, named as one of the tournament All Stars, said they put up a good fight in the final game and considers the tournament a success.

“You could tell the difference between our team and the team we played in the final.”

“We crawled our way back having a chance to win the game,” he wrote to the Sentinel. “We still forced [overtime] where we simply fell short.” He said that the tournament brought in a good number of teams. “We were the team the local community wanted to see win this tournament,” he said. “And we wanted to make that happen, seeing how that was our first time making the finals since the tournament started. He said the team’s first real tough match was against Prince Rupert in the

semi-final and had to fight against a 15 point trail with five minutes on the clock but the Haisla men managed to come out ahead by two points. In the final he said Prince Rupert did well by playing the first half more efficiently even though the Haisla had a one point lead at the half’s close. “We played tough,” he said. In the Men’s Division, Prince Rupert Lights Out placed first, followed by Haisla Braves Senior Men, Rupert Ballerz, Kitkatla Warriors, Fort St. James Wolves, Haisla Two and Kispiox Bullets. All Stars were Quinton Nyce for Haisla Braves, Andrew Nyce for Terrace Waks, Justin Adams with Lights Out, Morgan Grant for Haisla Braves, Aj Adusei for Rupet Ballerz and Most Valuable Player was Darcy Pearson with Lights Out. In the Ladies Division, the Haisla Senior Women placed first followed by Prince Rupert Rain, Prince Rupert Thunder, Hartley Bay, Canyon Wildcats and Gingolx Ladies. All Stars were Miranda Ross with Haisla Women, Kristen Helin with Prince Rupert Rain, Kaitlyn Smart with the Rain, Denise Wilson with the Prince Rupert Thunder and Megan Metz with Hartley Bay.
