Garrett D Hippy has a Canada Day departure date NELSON STAFF West Kootenay Advertiser
One Nelson man is planning on leaving everything to create change in federal government. He goes by Garrett “D Hippy” and on Canada Day he will be starting his journey across Canada by bicycle to ask Stephen Harper to step down and start a public inquiry into election
fraud in Canada. “I will quit my job, leave my girlfriend and not return to her until a fair election is called,” he said. Garrett became convicted to take action when the robocall scandal first arose. “To me we have a clear indication that no matter who is responsible for the robocall issue, we have do have an ille-
gitimate government and nothing is being done about it, everything is business as usual,” said Garrett, a local carpenter, who believes there should be a public inquiry. He said that at the very least he wants to bring light to issues and inspire other Canadians to step up and do the same. “I’ve been organizing some protests and those had little or no
affect towards real change and I’ve been scratching my head trying to figure out what kind of actions in the past people have done that were successful,” said the 32-year-old. He said that by fate he met a gentleman who had been on a lot of long walks in other countries and told him that he had some minor victories during that time.

“I thought of Canadian history in that regard and there was Rick Hansen and Terry Fox and they each had a cause and each made a clear impact.” Garrett’s journey will take him over 4000 kilometers in about 50 days and he said he owes it to his
country to do so. “I think I owe my country for being good to me so far and I want to ensure that the ten-year-olds learning about Canada today have something to hope for,” said Garrett. “We’re losing everything our fathers and grandfathers fought
for and worked for, it’s just going down the flusher. It’s time to drop everything and stop at nothing.” Garrett is encouraging anyone interested in joining him along the way to contact him at gdhippy@ hmail.com or by phone at 250-7772379.
Explore Mother Culture: Grow Mushrooms SUBMITTED
This Mother’s Day, join Peter McAllister from Underbelly Farm and Kootenay Agroforestry Society in a mushroom growing demonstration, slide show and discussion. • This educational event is a money and awareness gathering for the Kootenay Spawn Bank. Part of the proceeds also go to the Kaslo and Area Youth Centre. • This all ages event welcomes those interested in growing culinary and medicinal mushrooms indoors and outdoors for fun or for profit. The workshop begins with a demonstration of practical and simple methods to start mushrooms using spores, stem butts and commercially prepared spawn. The second portion of the
workshop is a slide show and discussion on how to grow and maintain mushroom cultures such as yogurt, miso, tempeh, beer and wine yeast, shiitake and oyster mushroom spawns, kombucha, amasake, sourdough cultures etc. This event is for those wanting to work with mushrooms for culinary, medicinal, spiritual, nature craft or gardening enrichment. • The Kootenay Spawn Bank (KSB) would be a network of people wanting to save, multiply and share spawn. If everyone takes on culture to nurture our lives will be richer. For more information on KSB contact Peter 250-353-2575 or peterunderbelly@ hotmail.com. • To celebrate Mothers attending there will be child
minding for ages 4 and up. The children of Mother Culture attendees will have the opportunity to go on a guided nature walk up to Kaslo’s beet coloured bridge spanning the Kaslo River.
Pre-registration and payment is required for organizing Child Minding, Car pooling, handouts and door prizes. There are a few volunteer positions available in exchange for admission. • Where: Scout Hall (Kaslo and Area Youth Centre) Kaslo BC. Bottom of A avenue next to Vimy park. • When May 13th Sunday from 1 to 4 PM rain or shine. • How Much? $20 per person or $30 per family or couple.

National Day of Mourning to be marked by Local with a vigil BREANNE MASSEY Advertiser Reporter
The United Steelworkers Local 480 is hammering out a lesson on safety this weekend to honour colleagues who lost their lives from occupational diseases or work-related accidents. Instead of being adorned with tool belts, hammers and overalls; Local 480 will march in a walk of
remembrance down Bay Ave to the Family and Memorial Worker Park near Cominco Arena. The memorial will be open to everybody and it’s being held at the Local 480 Hall at 10:45 a.m. on April 28. The service will begin around 11 a.m. “It’s to remember workers who died or were injured—it’s like Remembrance Day,” said Steve Como, the safety coordinator at
Teck. “Unfortunately these kinds of things do happen.”
“It’s to remember workers who died or were injured – it’s like Remembrance Day.” Steve Como, Teck Safety The procession opens a forum for
residents in Greater Trail to honor friends, family members and colleagues who have passed away trying to earn a living. Their lives will be celebrated in a prayer, march and public announcement froma WorkSafe BC representative this Saturday. The ceremony is a national holiday that raises red flags about the importance of utilizing preventative safety measures on job sites.

Rick Hansen Anniversary Relay well-received in Castlegar JIM SINCLAIR Advertiser Editor
1.877.364.2333 LOCAL 250.364.2333
Do they know how to plan a relay... or what? If organizers of the Rick Hansen “Many in Motion relay were hoping for calm sunny weather they hit the jackpot in Castlegar on Sunday. Easily the warmest, most ideal day for strolling was on the menu for Castlegar’s leg of the tour.Starting out just before noon, a wide assortment of medal bearers took a turn being the focus of attention as the relay made it’s way through town. Starting form the Tarry’s Fire Department the big medal was cooperatively transported by conveyances including a fire truck and emergency rescue truck (Tony Plonka) and the Brilliant Suspension Bridge (Laura and Erica Verigin.) Following these maneuvers just before noon the entourage broke for lunch at the Brilliant Cultural Centre. Thus fortified, local area fire chief Brian Bebelman got the show back on the road.I wrote the letter (bearer’s application) in regard to the Pass Creek Fire Department and the amount of (community-minded) work the department does in general, said the

chief prior to his 250 metres. “It sort of went from there. I never thought it would end up with me actually doing it. So I’m excited, proud for the fire department and the communities of Pass Creek and Brilliant. Heading out on the road with Bebelman were a couple of participants who would take their official turns chaperoning the symbolic medal. “It’s great to be carrying on what Rick Hansen did, said Leeann Zaitsoff. “It’s pretty exciting to be doing this.Displaying tremendous good cheer and tireless dedication was Otto Kamenzin, the relay’s operations director, no doubt selected in part due to those positive personality attributes, like the entire
crew, for that matter. Kamenzin was asked if there were any moments or locations along the trek (which had begun in Newfoundland last August) which had stood out in any way. It was asking a lot given that over 500 communities had been visited on the way to Castlegar. “I must mention, the other day we rolled through Balfour and it was quite incredible to see. They got the community together, rallying about 100 people as we arrived in the fire hall. The relay continued along, pass the gateway to Robson, across the river and into Castlegar.Melissa Esovoloff, prior to passing off to her niece Tyanna, also
said she was pleased by the opportunity to take part in the relay. “It’s so heavy, she joked about the large medal as she completed her stint supported by her husband Ken, and children Ella and

A lot of people are sold on Grandview living.
edge of Castlegar’s city limits, the Grandview property is desirable in so many ways. Development on the site is well-underway, a series of duplexes and bungalows are completed and are gaining the soughtafter lived in look. Some of these quality residences are still available. When finished the Grandview development (including a portion called Calamida Estates) will be a well-rounded neighbourhood with a variety of housing options – an all ages affair – something for everyone from young families to those in their golden years.
“Chateau Grandview,” company literature points out, “is the cornerstone of the project, providing apartment homes for those who seek a low maintenance lifestyle or desire easy access to hospitality and/ or support services. There will be 2 bedroom units, units with 1 bedroom plus den and 1 bedroom units.” The Chateau Grandview will be built in three phases. Phase 1 will include 63 apartment homes for Supportive Living, in a four storey building. Phase 2 will allow 72 apartments for Supportive or Assisted Living. Phase 3 will see the construction

of the Chateau and, probably those who have made the pledge to be part of the complex. As well as a elevated quality of living, there is plenty more to attract those thinking of getting in on this opportunity. As Jim Latkin explained, “construction will begin when we have approximately 30 pre-sales. This is definitely a case of ‘The sooner the better’ as the prime construction season has already begun. “If it can start soon it can be welladvanced by winter,” said Latkin... “with the roof in place, etcetera.”

Are you tired of burning up your money? Are you noticing the effects of smoking on your health? This may be the day that you never have to make a resolution to stop smoking
again. Canada’s most well known touring hypnotist is coming to Castlegar with his famous stop smoking with hypnosis seminar. The 2 ½ hour seminar will be held at the Sandman Hotel on Monday, May 14th at 7 p.m.
Romane proudly says “No one in the world has helped as many Canadians to stop smoking as I have. “ He has been hypnotizing Canadians and others for almost half a century. When asked why his method is so suc-

cessful, he said that he uses the “multiple method” approach. According to research by the US Surgeon General, the “multiple method” approach was said to have the highest success rate. Romane has researched over 1000 stop smoking programs himself, spent thousands of dollars on the programs, and has done surveys with thousands of his seminar attendees to find out what works best. Combining successful methods, he states that his approach is successful because it uses a “buckshot approach rather than a rifle shot” to help virtually anyone. His seminar also assists smokers to not only stop smoking, but to manage stress, build self-esteem, and control weight gain after stopping smoking. Romane has decided to slow down his touring, so this is his final major tour. He quotes W. Hall: “Take care of your health; you have no right to neglect it, and thus become a burden to yourself, and perhaps to others.” Hypnosis is widely used in medicine, psychology, dentistry, and many other areas. Dr. Jack Gibson of Naas Hospital in Ireland, performed over 4000 operations using only hypnosis as an anesthetic. Regardless of your chosen profession or hobby, the right tool will help you do your best. Not only that, but the special equipment you have carefully selected will mean you can enjoy that task to the fullest. For the discerning guitarist a customordered instrument signifies a level of commitment and the promise of a long and enjoyable relationship. Pii Guitars of Fruitvale are just such an investment, and it’s an interesting story of how they came to be. Peter Pii is the long-time operator of Kootenay Millwork, and also an enthusiastic guitarist since his early teens. Four years ago he made the jump to combining the two pursuits. He was contacted by phone on April 23 on the chance that he’d be willing to talk about his home-based business. A Castlegar musician named Brian Parfeniuk had been noticed putting a Pii guitar through its paces at a local jam session. Parfeniuk was well-pleased with the d re ad n ou g ht - s t y l e guitar and the looks
Peter Pii at work in his shop
and sound of the unit were most impressive. “I’d been wanting to build guitars for about 20 years,” Pii recalled. “But the shop I had was too busy. I was too involved with building furniture and cabinets. I never had the opportunity until I sold my business and built a shop beside my house. It was then that I started building guitars.” A Kootenay resident since 1972, Pii was a steady player, mentioning that live music was an integral part of any kind of party or get-together among his circle of friends. But what was once pretty much an everyday thing began to change as time went by. “Gradually all the people I played music with moved away and left me here on my own,” Pii reminisced. “You can only play music by yourself for so long.”
This was in the pre-web days when it wasn’t so simple getting instructional material that can keep a musician inspired. “I actually quit playing for about 15 years,” Pii related. “ Then my brother inlaw started getting me involved in it again.” As a player, Pii leans toward the traditional and is especially fond of mastering fiddle tunes on guitar. He’s also owned a large number of high-end guitars over the years. He’s well-familiar with Martin, for example, Collings, Santa Cruz and Gibson to name a few. He knew what he wanted when he set out to craft his own

unique models. Asked about his production and how it’s instigated, Pii said there are not currently enough orders to keep him busy full-time, so he builds on spec. This can be a real bonus to the prospective buyer in that (in some cases) a guitar that suits them can be acquired without the waiting time of several months. “Right now I have four guitars going, two ordered and two on spec,” he said. For the musician with special desires, there are a range of options available as well. For many players a mass-produced instrument is likely a good choice, but for those looking for superior tone, first class materials, top shelf craftsmanship and a certain level of exclusivity, the choice of a small-run model from a luthier (stringed instrument builder) will likely be one they’ll never regret. In Fruitvale the luthier’s art is alive and well... just check with Peter. piiguitars.com.

ern Interior MP Alex Atamanenko was not convinced. He felt the federal government was planning a cut back of border officers, regardless of the message conveyed. “We should be increasing staff at border crossings instead of slashing jobs, he said. “I’m hoping that none of (the cuts) are touching the border crossings in our neighbourhood. Atamanenko criticized the border officer cuts at a time when Canada is introducing comprehensive changes on “perimeter security with the United States. Participants from the Association of Kootenay Boundary Local Government (AKBLG) convention toured the Waneta Expansion Project on April 19.
No tax increase in Montrose Add another reason to the list of why you should move to Montrose. For the second time in three years village residents will not see an increase to municipal taxes. Although final approval on the village’s $3.57-million budget will come May 7, it looks like the village of 1,100 will see a zero per cent increase from what was paid in 2011.
Trail Briefs With 250 jobs cuts expected within the Canadian Border Services Agency over the next three years the axe likely won’t fall on the region’s U.S. ports of entry, an official with the national agency said Monday. Waneta, Patterson and Nelway border crossings are to be spared from a bloodbath involving over 1,000 people, despite an ominous tone emanating from the Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) head office heralding job cuts. In order to reduce their budget by $143.4 million by 2015, the nation’s border agency issued “affected letters to approximately 1,150 employees. Affected does not necessarily mean layoff, said CBSA senior media spokesperson Esme Bailey. And “these are not people staffing the ports of entry, Bailey said. A rare 1897 promotional timetable and booklet produced by the Northern Pacific Railroad entitled “To the Spokane-Kootenai Mining Country,” sold for $101 US last week. The booklet drew seven bids, four of $92 or more, despite the fact an enclosed map was in torn in three pieces. The booklet contains a precis of the Kootenay mining industry at the time, and noted “Miners receive from $3 to $3.50 per day, engineers and blacksmiths $3.50 to $4, common laborers $2 per day. House servants are mostly Chinese. Servant girls receive $20 to $30 per month, and Chinese servants still higher wages.” Elsewhere it said: “The majority of the people in this region are possibly American and certainly the capital invested at the present time is almost entirely so.” The booklet includes photos depicting the Trail smelter, SS Nakusp, and the Kootenai, OK, and City of Spokane mines in Rossland. The entire thing can be viewed online (albeit in black and white) at archive.org/ stream/cihm_15762. The seller was in Littleton, Colorado. Another copy sold in October 2007 for $167.50 US. • An envelope mailed by H.M. Walker of New Denver to the Sunday School Times of Philadelphia in 1901 sold for $37.50 Cdn. Walker, a newspaper man, worked in New Denver on The Ledge, and later moved to Enderby
where he started the Edenograph and Enderby Progress. The envelope came with a snapshot of a group of unidentified men that probably dates from the 1920s or ‘30s. • A couple of envelopes postmarked Lardeau, 1965 sold for $46 Cdn. One was from Waite’s General Store, and the other from the local stringer for the Nelson Daily News. The seller of the last three items was in Victoria. • A pair of nice postcards of the SS Minto sold late last month for $39 and $46 US respectively. Both probably dated to the 1940s and showed the boat docked, the latter at Arrowhead. The seller was in Armstrong. • A ruby flash glass pitcher from Rossland sold for $43 US, one of many such souvenir items produced before 1920. “It was beautiful and it was cheap,” the Ruby Stain Museum’s website explains. “The stained pattern glass could be decorated by engraving or etching ... enamel could be added on top of the stain.” The seller was in Ferndale, Wash. For a photo gallery of the items mentioned in this article, please see nelsonstar. com.

Tip of the Week: There is excitement in the air; can you feel it? Is it simply the energies of spring? Or is it the spectrum of current dramas like the Fukushima fallout saga, the Enbridge Pipeline controversy, Jumbo Wild, the smart meters debate, the brewing ‘Occupy Movement’, the US Election approaching, the London summer Olympics, the hockey playoffs, or is it the lingering concerns and questions surrounding the Mayan Prophesies and 12-21-2012 that gains your attention? There are many modes of perception and many dramas to focus upon. However you look at it, life is a drama. While peace is ever desired, conflict, friction, opposition and competition are woven into the very fabric of life. Cycles of change are a core theme and these naturally imply drama. Astrology has always and continues to measure these dynamics of life. Woven within the Zodiac, the “wheel of life” is a philosophy based on cycles and their natural rhythms. Astrology is the first science and religion and our ancestors from every great culture in the world compiled their observations based on the observances of the natural ‘laws of energy’. Learning to understand these cycles and their inherent laws gave rise to philosophies which host ‘psychologies of balance’. (So, I have created a workshop that outlines these called “The Laws of Energy and the Psychology of Balance”). To learn more send me an email.

Something new has been sparked in your perspectives. This is activating your will power. Deciphering where to focus first may be an issue. Yet, doing the rounds on projects, events and leisurely activities will prove satisfying. With new commitments and responsibilities now rooted in your life you should at least have a clear sense of your priorities. The time has come to take some key initiatives. Planning and preparing the ground may include some innovative and inventive thinking and action, at least behind the scenes. You are in the mood to play with the possibilities. This is activating you to draw upon a variety of resources and talents. This is an expansive time so get busy so the increase is not simply in your waistline. Rest and retreat to simply be and enjoy what is and/or to nurture your self and decompress and release stress… is the call now. This ideal may be easier said than done however as your curiosities and desire to experience new things are also being piqued. This could prove to be a good time to ‘get away’ if you can. How to merge both is the question? Some sizable returns for past choices, attitudes and actions are coming in now, for better or worse. This is activating some sober thinking and/or sobering realizations. At best, your energy and determination levels are on the rise. Making key enquiries for a new round of investments is also keeping you busy. Measure twice, cut once…! Establishing new foundations in your career and public life continues. Accessing the resources of others is a current focus. Managing financial concerns and considerations are motivating you. There are certain things you feel you must do, but may not want to, due to the efforts implied. Discipline is extra important at this stage of the journey which includes deciphering your best direction. Things are stirring on relationship fronts. Opportunities are rising. Yet you are wise to get clear on what you genuinely need in your life, over the next couple of months anyway. A soul searching process is implied. Yet rather than argue with your heart, make every effort to simply listen to it and trust what it is saying, and take note! The time has come to make a few improvements in your lifestyle. Your health is the main focus. This may require that you take some calculated risks. Be willing to entertain a variety of options so you can decipher which ones are best. Begin at least to communicate your needs and intentions to key players who can support you. An exciting creative cycle wave is upon you. It is pushing you to look to, and invest in the future. It is important that you persevere now. Though you may feel tired, make efforts to rejuvenate and get your second wind, or is it the twenty-second? Aim to be as pragmatic as possible; it will payoff…eventually. A new wave of confidence continues to roll in. Take stock of it and allow it to anchor deeply within. With exciting new perspectives to support your focus, be willing to follow their lead. Playing with the possibilities will allow you to relax and be intuitively guided to what is true for you. Yet, also be willing to push to get to the bottom of things as necessary. Your focus has turned to practical matters. You are determined to identify your best options. Gaining the support of significant others to assist you to follow through will likely help measurably. Be willing to diversify yet be careful not to scatter. Your willingness to undergo changes in your usual approach is your key to success now.
