Baseball apology

Tracy Holmes Staff Reporter

The White Rock South Surrey Baseball Association has publicly apologized to two volunteer coaches for allegations that were “from the outset, both unfounded and without any merit.” The statement, which appeared as an advertisement in Thursday’s Peace Arch News, stems from sanctions issued against John Hogg and Graham Edwards in January 2011, in connection with events relating to a 2010 all-star team of 12-year-olds. Hogg said Friday that it marks the end of a “difficult and chal❝The association lenging” process that recognizes that has led to changes believes will ultithe treatment of he mately strengthen the Mr. Hogg and Mr. association. “While saddened Edwards was that it had to occur an injustice to this way… I think that them and to their they’re stronger as families.❞ a result, and will be stronger moving forward,” Hogg told Peace Arch News. “While it’s been painful for a lot of people, I think, inevitably, it has been positive.” Hogg and Edwards launched a civil suit last April, after an unsuccessful appeal of the sanctions, which had banned them from volunteering for two years. The punishment was levied, the association said in a June statement of defense, in connection with alleged breaches of Little see page 4

Surrey swimmer Hilary Caldwell is headed to the Olympics. Caldwell, a South Surrey native and Pacific Sea Wolves Swim Club member who now lives and trains in Victoria, punched her ticket to the Summer Games in London after placing second in the women’s 200-metre backstroke last weekend at national team trials in Hilary Caldwell Montreal. Caldwell finished in a time of two minutes and 9.1 seconds – which not only met the Olympic standard but also set a B.C. senior provincial record in the process. Caldwell finished second to Ontarian Sinead Russell, and will now be one of 31 swimmers heading to the 2012 Games. “I knew it was going to be a really competitive final,” said Caldwell in a Swimming Canada release. “When you’re in the final at an Olympic trials there is a lot of stress, and to be able to perform like that was what I needed.”

Kevin Falcon says journalists ‘ran with scissors’ after he said he hasn’t decided whether to run in 2013

Noncommital finance minister mocks media Alex Browne Staff Reporter

Kevin Falcon

Has BC Liberal MLA Kevin Falcon changed his tune on running for re-election in 2013? Not according to him. B.C.’s finance minister – and Surrey-Cloverdale MLA – told Peace Arch News last week that the media has overreacted to comments he made to reporters when discussing the soul-searching process he says he always goes through before making the final decision to run in any election.

Falcon caused a stir in a media scrum Wednesday when he said that he had not made a final decision on running again, and that it would be subject to discussion with his family. “I’m a little bit amused by the fevered discussion in the media,” Falcon said the next day. “I said the same thing I say every time. I generally don’t make the decision 14 months ahead of the election.” B.C.’s next fixed election date is May 14, 2013. Reached by phone Thursday, fellow local BC Liberal MLAs Gordon Hogg (Surrey-White Rock) and Stepha-

nie Cadieux (Surrey-Panorama) did not equivocate on their plans – both said they would run again in 2013. Discussing the fallout from his comments, Falcon said he thinks the media is “hypersensitive” because of the resignation at the start of the week of BC Liberal MLA John van Dongen, who immediately joined the BC Conservatives, leading to speculation that Premier Christy Clark’s BC Liberal party is splintering. “They (the media) ran with scissors on this,” said Falcon, adding he was still chuckling over House see page 2

Comments differ from last year from page 1 Leader Rich Coleman’s response to questions about whether he planned to run. “He had the best line,” Falcon said. “He said ‘absolutely – but I’m making the final decision six months before the election.’” In February, Falcon delivered his first provincial budget as finance minister, saying it was aimed at eliminating the province’s deficit by 2013-’14, protecting public services and building a more competitive economy that would generate jobs and bring in investment. “It’s built on fiscal discipline, and it lays a firm foundation for the future we all want,” he said at the time.

During the BC Liberal leadership campaign one year earlier, Falcon was also widely quoted that “win or lose” he would run for the party in the next election. On Wednesday, he seemed to cast doubt on that commitment, when he was quoted as saying, “As minister of finance, there are very, very long hours, there is travel, these are issues that you also have to factor into the final decision that you make.” Among other members of the Liberal caucus, both Education Minister George Abbott and former finance minister Colin Hansen have said they are considering their options before deciding to run next year.

news Dog-theft allegations now include 38 charges against six women

‘Witch hunt’ claimed as charges mount Tracy Holmes Staff Reporter

A White Rock woman facing dozens of dog-theft-related charges – including several new ones added to the list last week – says the onslaught is going too far. “If this isn’t a witch hunt, I don’t know what is,” a frustrated Janet Olson told Peace Arch News Thursday morning, as she reviewed a court database list that has grown to include 38 charges against numerous defendants. “I don’t think they work this hard for sex offenders.” Of the charges listed, Olson – who is founder of A Better Life Dog Rescue – is facing 37.

It is alleged the offences occurred across the Lower Mainland between Oct. 27, 2006, and Nov. 21, 2011, and range from theft and fraud to break-and-enter and possession of break-in instruments. Another five women – Louise Reid, Michaela Schnittker, Diane Young Hale, Christine Carter and Natalia Borojevic – are also named as facing charges in connection with the investigation, which first came to light last November. That’s when Olson and Reid were arrested, after officers with Surrey’s Property Crime Target Team reportedly observed them enter a Coquitlam backyard and walk away with a bulldog named Samson.

Olson has repeatedly admitted to media that she took Samson, explaining a bulldog expert had advised that the dog was going to freeze to death. However, going over the updated list of charges prior to a brief court appearance Thursday, Olson said she had no idea what many of the other charges were referencing. She was also surprised to see Young Hale and Carter had been added. Carter, charged with theft in connection with a March 25, 2007, incident in New Westminster, “lives on oxygen and can barely get out of the house,” Olson said. Young Hale is charged with two counts of possession of stolen

Popular singer Mark Donnelly – known for his renditions of O Canada at Vancouver Canucks home games – was one of a number of dignitaries on hand Saturday at Sunnyside Park to help celebrate White Rock-South Surrey Minor Softball Association’s opening day event. Donnelly opened the festivities by signing the national anthem in front of about 400 parents, coaches and players.

Mierau Contractors has been chosen to build the replacement for Sunnyside Elementary. The company’s bid of roughly $10.4 million was the lowest submitted to the Surrey School District and nearly a million dollars less than its nearest contender. In all, 17 bids were put forward for the South Surrey project, ranging as high as $29.7 million. The new school, at 2828 159 St., will replace the existing facility, which, built in 1949, would need upgrading. As well, the current structure, at 15250 28 Ave., is near two busy roadways – 152 Street and King George Boulevard. The new school will have space for about 180 students. Construction is expected to get underway at the end of April, and a new name for the school is to be recommended.

Defence lawyer questions court document following amber alert

Irrelevant history ‘weakens psychiatric report’ Tracy Holmes Staff Reporter

A man who pleaded guilty after the parental abduction of a young boy in South Surrey last fall will have to wait at least another month in jail before learning his punishment. The sentencing hearing for Benjamin James McBeath had been expected to conclude this week in Surrey Provincial Court, but was delayed until May 3 after McBeath’s lawyer took issue with details contained in a forensic psychologist’s report. But Mark Rowan’s submission that certain details were inappropriate or irrelevant to the case did not sit well with Judge James Bahen. “I’m procedurally puzzled,” Bahen said Tuesday, noting he had ruled the full report admissible last month. “Where are we at, counsel? I’m confused.” McBeath is awaiting sentencing on charges of abduction of a person under 16, aggravated assault causing bodily harm and being in a dwelling without lawful excuse. He was arrested Sept. 27, after police were called to a home in the 1500-block of King George Boulevard around 8 p.m. Upon arrival, officers determined there had been a dispute, an alleged assault of a woman and the alleged abduction of a four-year-old.

An Amber Alert was issued around 9:40 p.m., but was deactivated about two hours later, after the boy was found in a vehicle spotted two kilometres away. McBeath has been in custody ever since. Initially charged with kidnapping, aggravated assault and break-and-enter, he pleaded guilty to the lesser charges in December. Tuesday, the judge expressed frustration at the new delay, noting he had expected to impose a sentence that afternoon. “I wanted to try and assist the accused and the public in getting this matter resolved,” Bahen said, following Rowan’s submission that he needed to see notes and documents used to compile the report in order to properly cross-examine its authors. Rowan responded: “I simply can’t do it… without knowing what’s in the file.” As examples of irrelevant and inappropriate detail, the defence attorney cited information including more than 1½ pages on McBeath’s past criminal activities and several pages referencing McBeath and his wife’s sex life. Stripped down to what is admissible, Rowan said, it “would be a very different report.” The judge said he wanted to hear from the forensic experts, with prosecutor Brian Shaw noting Rowan could address his concerns

Investigators locate a young boy Sept. 27. with the report on cross-examination. In response to questions from Shaw, psychologist Karen Whittemore said assessments such as that done on McBeath look to identify factors related to a subject’s risk for violence, and include details of any past treatments and mental health history, as well as information gleaned from interviews with the accused, the victim (in the case of spousal assault) and others who know the subject. The psychologist testified that the report on McBeath was compiled and analyzed by a practicum student under her supervision, and included extensive interviews, including eight hours with McBeath himself.

It rated the 35-year-old’s “risk for spousal violence in general to be high,” she said. In cross-examination, Rowan asked Whittemore to explain the inclusion of a number of details, including information that McBeath’s first serious relationship was with a woman seven years older than him who was engaged at the time to another man. Whittemore responded it might speak to how McBeath views relationships, but agreed with Rowan that it also speaks to how the woman views relationships. Asked how details of charges from a 2007 incident that were stayed “could possibly be relevant” to the current case, Whittemore explained the information is required in scoring subjects on a psychopathy checklist. Repeatedly, Rowan highlighted that certain sources and information could only be explained through access to notes that were used to compile the report. As an example, he asked whether the victim – McBeath’s wife – was ever challenged on information she provided, and how much of the interview with her focused on the couple’s sex life. After an afternoon of cross-examination, the defence attorney conceded to the judge that further questions on the report could be directed to the actual report author.

news Anesthesiologists back in court in two weeks

A court injunction has barred anesthesiologists from a planned job action, which would have disrupted some surgeries.

Surgical slowdown blocked Jeff Nagel Black Press

B.C.’s health authorities have won a temporary court injunction barring anesthesiologists from a planned job action to disrupt thousands of elective surgeries this week. The B.C. Anesthesiologists Society (BCAS), which is in a labour dispute with the province, had vowed to reduce service at all Lower Mainland hospitals outside of Vancouver, as well as others on Vancouver Island and in the Interior, starting April 2. The B.C. Supreme Court ruling Friday freezes that strategy until a full hearing can be heard on the injunction request April 18. Society president Dr. Jeff Rains said members intend to fully abide by the judge’s instructions. He would not say whether anesthesiologists will go ahead with the job action if the injunction request is rejected in court later this month. “We’ll have to just see what comes out in the hearing,” Rains said. “From the very beginning our path forward has not been as an end goal to withdraw services from patients,” he said. “Our goal is to improve services to patients. “With or without an injunction, with or without service reductions, we still need a process to deal with the issues critical to anesthesia care in this province.” Interior Health president and CEO Dr. Robert Halpenny, speaking on

behalf of all health authorities, said the injunction was necessary because urgent and emergency surgeries could have been compromised. The health authorities have also warned anesthesiologists that they can be found in breach of their contracts if they withdraw service. Health authorities sent out 3,237 letters to patients last week warning their surgeries may be rescheduled, with 1,105 patients in Fraser Health receiving the advisory. Patients most likely to be affected by any future job action are ones awaiting non-urgent procedures such as hip or knee replacements and cataract surgeries. All emergency and urgent surgery, including urgent joint replacements and cardiac or cancer-related surgeries, will not be affected. Anesthesiologists are trying to pressure the province to allow their society to bargain separately, rather than under the umbrella of the B.C. Medical Association, which they say does not represent their interests. Health Minister Mike de Jong previously accused the group of holding patients hostage in a bid to win higher wages. The province says anesthesiologists make about $340,000 a year with almost none of the overhead expenses of other doctors. De Jong called the threat of a service withdrawal “unprofessional.” Rains said any attempt by the province to intimidate or punish anes-

thesiologists would only backfire by worsening surgery waits and making new anesthesiologists less likely to move to B.C.

Vet guilty of animal abuse

Saying he had “extreme difficulty” with the testimony of former Langley vet Mark Marohn, Surrey Provincial Court Judge Reginald Harris ruled last week that Marohn was using an emaciated former racehorse to tow a car from a ditch on Dec. 10, 2008. Judge Harris found Marohn guilty of two animal-abuse charges Wednesday morning, one of neglect and one of permitting animals to be in distress. At his trial, Marohn denied a claim by an RCMP officer who said she observed Marohn trying to use the sickly horse named “Buddy” to get a car out of a ditch. The horse had to be put down at the scene. Marohn said the horse got loose, and he didn’t want to return it to the stall because he was worried it might get out again. Harris said he didn’t believe Marohn’s testimony. “I have extreme difficulty with it,” Harris said. “I don’t accept his story, because it makes no sense. “(It’s) difficult to accept.” The judge described the testimony of Liseanne Dumas, the Langley RCMP officer who said she saw the horse tied to the car, as “clear, consistent and straightforward.” “I am satisfied beyond a reasonable doubt that the accused was using Buddy in an attempt to free the vehicle,” Harris said. The judge expressed some sympathy for the desperate circum-

Marohn had six horses, including Buddy, that were growing steadily thinner as a result of lack of food, but had refused an SPCA offer to take them off his hands because one of his daughters would not be allowed to visit her former pet, the judge said. “He was aware they were becoming emaciated. He was aware that something had to be done, but he didn’t want the SPCA to take them.” Harris described Marohn as a “kind-hearted professional man”

who “allowed his heart to take priority over his good judgment.” Marohn faces a possible maximum jail term of six months. Sentencing has been postponed six weeks to allow a pre-sentence report that will include a psychiatric assessment. Prosecutor Liane O’Grady said it was possible the psychiatric assessment would reveal “mitigating” information about the stress Marohn was under at the time of the incident. Marohn’s lawyer Jackie Percival said her client want to get the sentencing over with that day, but the judge said he would need more information before he imposes a penalty. Marohn’s estranged wife Carol Schoyen-Marohn’s trial had to be postponed because she suffered a stroke. It is expected to begin later this year.

Federal budget thinks longterm he federal budget takes a stab at dealing with several challenging issues which face Canadian taxpayers in the future. The biggest single challenge is the expected jump in federal expenditures from rising Old Age Security payments. As the Baby Boomer generation ages, more and more people will be collecting OAS payments. While a few of those payments will be fully clawed back due to high income levels, most will be paid out to seniors. The increasing cost of providing these payments, which are the largest single direct payment from Ottawa to individual Canadians, will be a huge burden to those remaining in the work force. Keep in mind that many younger people are working at relatively low-paying jobs, and their prospects for enjoying the type of wages that Baby Boomers received through much of their working lives aren’t nearly as good. Gradually raising the age when people can first receive the OAS from 65 to 67 is a good way to deal with rising future costs. No one who is close to retirement and has been planning on a retirement age of 65 will be affected, but notice has now been served to those who are 53 or younger that the age of eligibility will change. Another very important long-term move is to begin to tighten up public service pension plans, including those of MPs. While no specifics have been worked out, the government is working towards a higher retirement age, having public servants and MPs pay more into pension plans and boosting the age at which MPs will get pensions (they can now get them at age 55). All of these ease pressure on taxpayers of the future. The third long-term strategy is to eliminate the deficit by 2016. This is an excellent step forward, and if it comes sooner, that’s even better. When the government isn’t running a deficit, it can start to pay down its debt. The sooner it does this, the better. While interest rates are low, it makes sense to both pay down debt and refinance other debts which now involve higher interest rates. Reducing annual interest payments is the best single way to ease pressure on future taxpayers for the long term. Many governments craft budgets with an eye to the next election, and fail to think longterm. This budget contains several key longterm strategies, which will over time ease the pressure on working people. That’s good news.

So far this week you’ve said… yes 74% no 26% 71 responding through two provincial elections. Van Dongen was at the top of everyone’s list of disgruntled BC Liberals. During last year’s leadership contest, he muttered darkly about not only BC Rail, but also the integrity of fellow Abbotsford MLA Mike de Jong. Now Clark is van Dongen’s target, with Cummins standing beside him trying to look statesman-like. Of course, van Dongen drove himself out of cabinet long before Clark returned. Chronic speeding by a public safety minister is a tough sell. I asked Cummins about the reluctance of key cabinet ministers Kevin Falcon and George Abbott to confirm they are running again. His aw-shucks friendlygrandpa modesty precludes speculation, but he did allow it’s “maybe a comment on the state of affairs in the Liberal caucus.” Reporters started surveying government MLAs after Falcon and Abbott kept their options open for 2013. For the record, fellow ministers Terry Lake, Shirley Bond, Pat Bell, Mary Polak, Rich Coleman and Stephanie Cadieux all said they are firmly on Clark’s election team. Independent-minded backbenchers Bill Bennett and Kevin Krueger also saluted the BC Liberal banner. Randy Hawes allowed that he’s 65, so if he leaves it will be for the golf course. As I was talking with Cummins, BC Conservative advisor Randy White was assuring the Abbotsford News that more defections are coming. Cummins has people for the dirty work. Speedy solution An open letter to Surrey-Cloverdale MLA Kevin Falcon. I apologize for writing you on this matter, however as it concerns your constituency, I thought that you may like to make a call to the RCMP in the interest of public safety. There is a growing problem in South Surrey, especially along secondary roads, such as 8 Avenue east from Highway 99 and east from 176 Street, as well as along 32 Avenue east of 152 Street to 192 Street, and on 176 Street from the border to Highway 1. Likewise a similar problem exists on 184 Street through the school zone just north of 24 avenue, among many others. These are serious areas where motorists are not only ignoring posted speed limits, but many travel these routes at almost double the posted limits. When police are contacted by the public, their response is that they just don’t have the manpower to deal with traffic complaints unless the public supplies them with the full details of each offender observed. This isn’t the public’s job, this is why we pay for police. Several of these areas have school zones, where not only children are at risk but parents dropping off or collecting their young ones. There have already been a number of serious incidents on a number of routes in South Surrey, ranging from minor incidents to very serious collisions, and still police will not conduct radar patrols, citing a lack of manpower. Your kind input on this growing problem would possibly add the voice needed to get the RCMP to take matters more seriously. James Cooper, Surrey

legislatures. We elect MPs, MLAs, parliaments and legislatures. That is how we do things in Canada. That is not how Christy Clark became B.C. premier or how “The Harper Government” rules in today’s 21st century absolutism. Brian Marlatt, White Rock

Standards set, not supported Editor: Re: Valuating our school teachers, March 27 letters Letter-writer Bob Holden has had the wool pulled over his eyes. The government has not represented the taxpayers of B.C. for some time, about as long as the Canadian government has not been speaking for the people of Canada. Bob, it’s the neoconservative agenda, more and more widely written about by the likes of Naomi Klein in Shock Doctrine. Please don’t forget that teachers, nurses and such public-service employees work under government regulations that set standards for their practise. Therein lies the conflict: the same entity that requires the maintenance of standards of practice does not support them. Penny Oyama, Burnaby

Special delivery An open letter to Canada Post. Our mail delivery person, John, is not only a kind man who goes above and beyond the call of duty for all of our neighbours, he most certainly does at least that for me. I am a quadriplegic due to a motorcycle accident numerous years ago. When my husband, Ulli, and I moved into our first house together in Surrey, not only was Canada Post most accommodating, every postal delivery carrier since has been, especially John. As you can imagine, moving into your first home is stressful. When my husband and I learned the mailbox that was designated to our home was too high for me to reach, we phoned Canada Post and they immediately gave us the lowest, most accessible post box available. On a few occasions, John has gone out of his way to personally bring the mail to me when there was a huge pile. I guess somehow John noticed I enjoy my walks to the mailbox on sunny days. While being able to get one’s mail may seem like a burden to some, it is a privilege for me to be able to do so. When I first broke my neck, I was pretty much paralyzed from the

chest down, unable to breathe on my own or even scratch my own itchy nose. Fortunately, against many odds, I pulled through when the doctors told my parents I wouldn’t make it through the night. Not only did I live when the doctors said I wouldn’t, I recovered to the point where I am able to move my arms and some of my fingers. I went on to live life to the fullest. I completed a BSW at UBC about six years after my accident, then married “My Prince” in 1989 and have travelled the world and met many people who have changed and enriched my life forever. I don’t consider myself a wealthy person, however, I feel like I have won the lottery more times than I can count. I don’t judge people by the size of their house, the number of certificates on their office wall, etc. What matters most to me is people’s actions – most importantly, how they treat other people. John’s “random acts of kindness” have meant a lot to me, especially on those cold, dreary winter days when I am often stuck inside the house because I find it is too cold for me to go out. When he drops off a “special delivery” that I have to sign for, I race to the door with a big smile on my face in anticipation of my “gift,” – often I am still in my PJs but I don’t care, because I know John accepts me just as I am. Politics not about party Editor: One year ago, new BC Liberal, former MLA, talk-show host, leader of the BC Liberals Christy Clark became Canada’s first premier without benefit of having been elected to a provincial legislature or parliament. She was just a party leader elected by a handful of party insiders. Politics should not be about party. It reminds us that in the votersuppression tainted May 2 election, Stephen Harper claimed that in Canada the leader of the party with the most seats elected to the Commons becomes prime minister. Not so, of course, even when that is the practical outcome. The elected MP – and we elect MPs and MLAs, not parties, even if some people vote party – with the confidence of the House becomes prime minister. We do not elect parties or movements or prime minister or premiers or presidents unaccountable to parliaments and

Prime nesting season is a questionable time to drain wildlife ponds at South Surrey’s Southmere Village Park, writes Donna Passmore, who contributed the earlier photo on the left from Feb. 9 and the latter taken March 24.

Don’t just boast about biodiversity Editor: Nearly 10 years later, it still bothers me that dog owners were bullied off a little patch of grass in the Blackie Spit area on the grounds of the city’s great dedication to the protection of migrating wildfowl; everything else the city does says otherwise. It is just a fluke that I took a bunch of pictures in Southmere Park on Feb. 9 of this year. Bad pictures, as it turns out, so I didn’t share them. I try to take my camera and a notepad whenever possible, because the name of the game in Surrey is “deny, deny, deny.” I was moved by the large and varied populations of ducks and geese in the park and took some photos. Imagine my surprise when a month later I see the city has drained what has now changed from “wildlife habitat” signage to being referred to as a drainage pond. I’m not taking issue with work being done on the

pond – but rather the choice of prime nesting season as the timing for doing it. It has been about eight years since the Fraser Valley Conservation Coalition asked the City of Surrey to create meaningful, effective wildlife corridors worthy of a city that currently boasts the biodiversity that it does. The city has refused to engage in such discussions with the community at large, and has allowed development to take place within the “natural” corridors – significantly diminishing the opportunities to create effective habitat corridors. Clearly, the City of Surrey doesn’t give this urban park the same importance I do. But I believe the voters and taxpayers of South Surrey were drawn to this area by its rich natural features and will share my concerns – even if I’m the only weirdo who takes pictures of duck poop. Popular barista program shutting down due to federal budget cuts

taff and students at Cloverdale Learning Centre can’t believe a popular, successful job training program for at-risk youth is coming to an end. Last week, a few of them joined participants and supporters of the Baristas Skills Link Program as they gathered for a final farewell at the Guildford Youth Resource Centre. It’s an untimely wrap-up for an awardwinning program that was held up as a model by B.C.’s business community and helped brew job success for hundreds of youth in Surrey, Cloverdale and Langley over the past decade. Offered through Pacific Community Resources Society and Starbucks Coffee Canada, the Baristas Skills Link Program was a unique partnership between a social services agency, the private sector, the Surrey School District and the federal government. The agency is at a loss to explain why the federal government has decided it will no longer support the program. It was designed to give students like Cloverdale’s Paige Ferguson, 18, and Langley’s Dain Leguerrier, 17, a foot in the door of the labour market by helping them overcome barriers to employment. They completed the program last week as part of the final intake. Both are disappointed to learn the program won’t be continuing. Participants go through an intensive, sixweek life skills program, followed by a nineweek, paid work placement at Starbucks, where they are treated like any other employee and held to the same expectations. “We are trained and treated like any other barista,” Leguerrier said. Now that he’s completed the program, he’s re-applied to work at Starbucks while he continues his studies at Cloverdale Learning Centre. “I think I look at myself and others in a completely different way,” he said. “I have a new outlook on life, my goals, self-definition, self-discipline, and how to go about getting employment.” Susan Johnson, the career development

Baristas program supervisor Siobahn Pires learned in November federal funding would be coming to an end. “We weren’t given an exact reason,” she said. “Our funding has always come through at

the 11th hour. This came as a surprise.” Although the program was launched in Surrey in 2003, more recently participants came from all over the Lower Mainland after the Vancouver barista program and a pilot project in North Vancouver were closed down. “We were told they were no longer funding duplicate programs,” Pires said. Over the past decade, 370 students completed the barista program – 232 from the Surrey area. The society receives roughly 70 to 80 applications per session. With only

10 seats available at a time, some 195 youth are turned away each year. “It’s frustrating,” Pires said. “There’s going to be a lot of people looking for services that just aren’t available now.” She praised Starbucks for standing up for the community’s youth and sticking with the program over the years. “Starbucks just provides a really open, nonjudgmental environment for them to learn. That’s been huge. They’re really working with our youth. A lot of employers aren’t willing to take a chance.”

lifestyles Second annual event on the Peninsula

Pooch parade set to return The second annual Pooch Parade on the Peninsula is set to hit White Rock beach later this month. The event, which received special permission from the city to be held on the normally dog-free beach, will take place April 22 at 10 a.m. Proceeds from the event benefit the Rotary Club of White Rock and the Semiahmoo Animal League Inc. (SALI) Among the activities planned for the event, in addition to the parade itself, are a photo contest and a dancing dog demonstration.

Doggie bags will be handed out from 10:30 a.m. to noon. In addition, police dogs will be on-site. About 300 dogs and their owners are expected to attend, according to event organizers Karen and Winston Conyers. “This is a fun, family, community event,” Winston said, adding that a fundraising goal of $10,000 has been set. Those wishing to participate can register online at www. pponthep.ca Suggested donation is $20 per dog.

T3 RECOVERY MATTRESSES

Ironman Mattresses with Celiant® and Cellitex® have been proven in clinical test to reduce pain, increase oxygen levels, and help balance body temperature. Each of these results can have added benefits, including faster healing, increased performance, better quality sleep and improved overall wellness; all of which can help alleviate the symptoms of arthritis and peripheral vascular disease often associated with diabetes. The key to Celliant® lies in its ability to absorb and store electromagnetic (energy) emissions from the human body and release them where they are reabsorbed into the skin and deep muscle tissue, they act as catalysts for natural, biological processes resulting in enhanced oxygen levels, and more balanced body temperature during sleep, rest or physical activity.

The weather may be cold and soggy but activity within the Ocean Park Business Association is deÀnitely heating up. Laura Thibeault New members join each Secretary, OPBA and every month. We’ve just welcomed Marlyn Graziano, publisher of the NOW Newspaper to the group. Marlyn and her staff look forward to working with the Ocean Park Business Association. Another great information source, WhiteRocksBest, has also joined OPBA. WhiteRocksBest is an online lifestyle magazine dedicated to providing news and views on South Surrey and White Rock’s art, health, lifestyle and culture. JJ+Whiskey, a popular OP clothing store has been sold to owner Kate Lucyk’s long-time friend, and onetime employee, Courtney (GoGo) MacCuish. When Kate decided to step back, it made sense to hand over the reins to someone experienced that she knew would bring energy and vision, work well with existing staff and continue providing terriÀc service and the “best clothes ever” to Ocean Park. Be sure to stop by 1631 128 Street to welcome GoGo to the neighborhood. Everyone’s sorry to see Kate retire but she assures us she’ll still be around to engage in whatever next adventure comes along.

Plans are starting to cook for this year’s Ocean Park Day on June 16. Sandy Smith of Cotton’N’Crayon reports this year’s theme is celebrating the “Nature of Ocean Park” with terriÀc surprises in store from local merchants along with more outstanding on-stage entertainment organized by Janice Savage of Beyond Scarlett Entertainment. The Ocean Park Community Association is planning a special Heritage Day to celebrate the upcoming new facelift at the Hall. We are looking for a Coordinator to work alongside Sandy and the other business owners organizing the day to be the point person for home-based business vendors who also want to participate. Please call Sandy soon at 604-535-0466 to volunteer and share your ideas. Watch this column and our OPBA Facebook page for further developments and details. Our next OPBA meeting will be a “BusinessAfterBusiness” at 6pm, Thursday, April 12 at Curves located upstairs (above Coast Capital) at #203, 1678 128 Street. Owner, Deb Gagnon invites you to see her new facility and sample her tasty gluten-free, dairyfree and best of all, guilt-free goodies. This meeting will be a relaxed, social opportunity to mix and mingle with other businesspeople over light refreshments. Plan to attend for networking, snacks and great doorprizes!

You are up against a situation that will turn you into some kind of hero. It feels good to be brave and you like having the opportunity to shine.

You feel very tense lately, and all that stress might affect your health. Take some time to rest, and indulge in a period of silence if you can. If you do, you will be back on your feet in no time.

TAURUS Generally, you are happy with your routine and enjoy having things well planned and organized. This week, though, it will do you some good to let go of old habits and have some fun with new ideas.

GEMINI You seem to be running low on patience with just about everybody, and it’s because you are feeling irritated by routine. You might spend a lot of time driving people around in your car, so make sure it is running properly.

CANCER Your astrological sign is represented by family and home, and this week you might be thinking about purchasing a house. This is a good time to move forward with that, as all the steps will be smooth (including the financing!).

LEO A lot of activity is coming your way. You enjoy the company of your friends and family, even if they are sometimes quite demanding. You enjoy being a devoted friend and family member this week.

VIRGO You might have to deal with some kind of emergency. At work you are overwhelmed as more clients come to you and your coworkers than you ever would have imagined. You will find the resources to follow through.

SCORPIO You may be pleasantly surprised by a promotion at work. This good news might inspire your friends to organize a party to celebrate, since they all know how hard you have worked.

SAGITTARIUS You might sign up for a class that will help you advance professionally. This may also allow you to meet new people. Everything you do this week will be done fast.

CAPRICORN You are tempted to go on a lastminute getaway holiday. It’s a great idea, but take the time to get informed about the location so you don’t end up disappointed.

AQUARIUS If somebody owes you money; you will finally get your due. Stay close to home this week so you can connect with your loved ones around family activities.

PISCES Expect some kind of conflict with a co-worker, friend, family member, or lover. Just remember that it is okay to not agree about everything. Keep your cool and the dark cloud will pass.

Surrey Eagles forward Colton Mackie moves the puck up the ice, and past a fallen Powell River King, during action at South Surrey Arena. The Eagles trail the series 3-1.

Surrey drops pair of games on home ice

Eagles one loss away from elimination Nick Greenizan Sports Reporter

The Surrey Eagles’ season has come down to a single game. The South Surrey squad is one game away from playoff elimination after dropping the last two games of their BC Hockey League Coastal Conference final on home ice to the Powell River Kings. The Eagles, who split the first two games in Powell River – they won Game 2 by a 2-1 score Wednesday – dropped Games 3 and 4 at South Surrey Arena on the weekend, losing Friday 4-3 and Saturday 2-1 in overtime. They trail the series 3-1; Game 5 was played Monday night in Powell River after press deadline. Surrey had the chance to even the series 2-2 Saturday, after forward Sean McGovern scored with just 3:03 left in the third period,

tying the game 1-1, and sending it into overtime. But the extra period ended quickly, as Kings’ Cohen Adair scored the game-winner just 1:12 into the OT frame. J.P. Villeneuve scored Powell River’s first goal of the game, at the 2:09 mark of the first period. Powell River netminder Sean Maguire was the headliner for the visiting squad, turning away 48 Eagles shots. His counterpart in the Surrey net, Andrew Hunt, made 34 saves. A day earlier, the Eagles nearly pulled off a successful comeback after falling behind 4-0 after just 20 minutes. Powell River jumped all over the Eagles in the first period, scoring four goals in a six-minute span. Daniel Schuler had two, and Chris Williams and Matt Scarth also scored. In the second period, Steve Koshey – on

the power play – replied for Surrey, and the Eagles tacked on two more in the third period, from leading playoff-scorer Devon Toews – who also had an assist – and captain Tyler Morley, but they could not get the equalizer before time expired. Hunt stopped 16 of 20 shots in the first period, and was pulled in favour of Conor Barrie for the final 40 minutes. Barrie, seeing his first action of the playoffs, stopped all 27 shots he faced. In Game 2 Wednesday, the Eagles, who a day earlier were shut out 3-0 in the series opener, broke the goose egg near the end of the second period, when Brandon Tanev – who scored the series-clinching overtime goal in Round 1 against Cowichan – and Charles Orzetti scored less than a minute apart to give the visitors a 2-0 lead heading into the third period.

In the third, Powell River drew to within one goal when Evan Richardson made it 2-1, with Scarth and Brendon MacDonald drawing assists. Surrey’s Hunt stopped 34 Powell River shots on net. Should the series end with a Kings’ victory, it would continue an unsettling trend for the South Surrey squad, as Powell River has been a thorn in the team’s side for the last few years. The Kings beat Surrey in playoff rounds last season and in 2008/09, and this year a late push in the final two weeks of the regular season – which included two wins over Surrey – gave them top spot in the Coastal Conference, overtaking the Eagles, who finished second. If Game 6 is necessary, it will be played at South Surrey Arena tonight (Tuesday).

Semiahmoo youth league set to begin play April 5

Ball hockey growing in Year 2 Nick Greenizan Sports Reporter

The Semiahmoo Minor Ball Hockey League is ready for its second season, and participation numbers – both players and volunteers – are up from where they left off last year. League president and founder Rick Duchesne said last week that 150 players – ranging from youngest (peanut division) to oldest (junior) – had already been registered for the 2012 season. Last year, 112 players were registered. “The numbers this year, so far, are great, just awesome, Duchesne said.

Volunteer coaches and executive members have also multiplied, he added, which means he doesn’t have to wear as many hats throughout the season. “The response after the first year was just fantastic – couldn’t have asked for anything more, he said. “For our first year, it couldn’t have gone any better. Registration numbers could have even been higher, Duchesne said, had it not been for the teacher’s job action. Ball hockey sessions Rick Duchesne – aimed at drumming up interest Semi Ball Hockey in the sport – were planned, but cancelled at a number of schools, as was a flyer campaign.

Easter

“Yeah, it hurt a little bit, for sure, he said. But nevertheless, he’s enthused about the coming season, which begins April 5 and runs until the end of June at White Rock’s Centennial Arena. This year, Semiahmoo teams will play each other – there are two teams in each division – as well as an interlocking schedule with other associations, like South Delta, Cloverdale and Abbotsford. In addition, Duchesne was working on a potential tournament at season’s end with teams from Alberta. Registration is still ongoing, and anyone interested in signing up or learning more about the league, can visit www.semiahmooballhockey.com

Phantom capture B.C. title Gary Ahuja Black Press

The Fraser Valley Phantom are one step closer to a spot at the Canadian national championships. The girls Midget AAA hockey team captured the provincial championship March 25 at the Walnut Grove Sportsplex, downing the visiting Thompson-Okanagan Rockets 6-1 in game three of the best-of-three playoff series. The teams had split the first two games of the weekend series, with the Phantom winning 2-1 in overtime on the Friday night before the Rockets stayed alive the next day after a 4-3 victory. “This year has kind of been a fairy tale year for us,” said Ray Werger, the Phantom general manager and president. “The last couple of seasons, we went through rebuilding.” The team is made up of midget players from the Fraser Valley and parts of the Lower Mainland. Five Surrey residents are on the team – forwards Mackenzie Wong, Caitlyn Younger and Simran Sidhu, defender Jessica Golz and goaltender Laticia Castillo. Sidhu tallied twice in the deciding game March 25, with Wong

scoring once and assisting on two others. Younger also netted a goal. The Phantom finished atop the B.C. Female Midget AAA Hockey League with a 22-2-2 (won-lost-tied) record. Up next for the Phantom is a regional playoff series April 6-8 against the Edmonton Thun-

der, the Alberta champions. The winner advances to the Canadian national championships in Prince Edward Island. The Phantom will be hosting the best-of-three series at the Surrey Sports and Leisure Complex on April 6-8. Game times are 6 p.m., 1:15 p.m. and if necessary, 10:30 a.m.
