he new Alberni District Secondary School on Roger Street is a beehive of activity as workers enter the final phase of construction on the facility. The city’s first new high school since the 1950s is slated to open for classes in September. Meanwhile across town at the old school on Burde Street, director of career education Brian Laviolette is busy helping prepare for the ADSS Old School Celebration Day, which is being held on Saturday, April 28. “I’ve got mixed emotions about seeing the old place go because it’s served us well. Sixty-one years is a good run for the old fort,” Laviolette said. “But at the same time I look forward to getting into the new building.” The celebration, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., is informal. Maps will be provided to attendees and they’re free to tour the school. A table with memorabilia including school annuals from each decade will be available for perusing, classic cars will be parked outside and food and refreshments will be provided. There may be music in the auditorium depending on who’s available, and informal basketball scrimmages will be held in the gym, Laviolette said. “We’re not running a dog and pony show here. It’s going to be

a day to come and socialize and share memories,” Laviolette said. “See it all one last time before it’s maybe taken down, depending what happens.” And people will be able to take a little piece of the school
with them. T-shirts marking the occasion are being sold for $5 and orders taken for them if they run out. But the pièce de résistance is that fourby-four-inch pieces of the old gymnasium floor are being presold for $5 each.
As the building is public property, the initiative needed the blessing of School District 70 trustees. Secretary treasurer Jerry Linning confirmed that the presale was discussed by trustees and given the go-ahead.
April 28 was chosen as the date to celebrate because it’s before grad and before school staff have to start moving out of the old school and into the new digs. “We won’t have any time to do this in June or after,” Laviolette
said. The event has been gaining momentum, he added. “We’ve been getting calls from all over,” he said. “Mind you, it means a lot to some people but it’s not important to others.” Laviolette, 58,
has amassed a vast archive of memories during his tenure at ADSS. A then-young Turk of 26, Laviolette got his start at the high school as an intern in 1980. He returned to ADSS in 1985 after spending time in Australia and at EJ Dunn Middle School, and coached both girls and boys basketball. “I didn’t just come in knowing what I know, I was mentored,” Laviolette said. “I learned a lot from Jim Mayo, Frank Holmes and others.” The whole school is cloaked in memories, but Laviolette speaks with a particular reverence for the gymnasium. The stories are many: like the Totem tournament that had to be moved to the Alberni Athletic Hall one year because of a job action by CUPE. Teachers break from their routines during the summer but get back to them in late August. Continued/11

The ceremony for 261 students who are graduating from Alberni District Secondary School this year could be affected by teachers’ withdrawal from extra curricular activities. Last week, B.C. teachers voted 73 per cent in favour of withdrawing volunteer services to protest the Education Improvement Act, or Bill 22. Alberni District Teachers Union president Ken Zydyk would not disclose how the local vote break down. “It’s BCTF policy to report the results as a whole B.C. wide, he said. Extra curricular activities include sports, dinners, field trips, theatre and other activities that teachers do outside of instructional school hours. “This was a difficult decision for all
teachers to have to make because they enjoy these activities as much as the kids do, Zydyk said. “But we feel we have been forced into a corner and have to do this. Zydyk was clear that the protest timeline was 10 weeks; that it will end at the end of June. But it will impact whatever activities have been planned up to then — including the ADSS Grade 12 graduation ceremony on June 29. “If it is outside of instructional hours then yes it will be included, Zydyk said. “Just because we won’t volunteer doesn’t eliminate the event because there are still administrators and the public. The grad ceremony and scholarship bursary night (June 13) are being examined closely as a result of recent development, ADSS principle Mike Ruttan said. Teachers are an integral part of

the grad ceremony, and assist with the grad parade, march-in, handing out certificates, and security among other things, Ruttan said. But it’s not clear yet how the grad event will be impacted. “We couldn’t do some of the things without teachers support, he said. “We’re going to look at what we have to do to make this happen, he said. There will still be a ceremony, Ruttan said; just maybe not as big as it has been in the past. As for other extracurricular activities, ADSS has one of the highest number of teachers who coach in the province, so the effect could be far and wide. But there’s a caveat to the withdrawal of extracurricular participation. “My understanding is that teachers won’t pull the plug on anything that has already started, Ruttan said,

B.C. Conservation officials want to know who cut the head and paws off a bear, gutted it then dumped its remains in Port Alberni’s Somass River. Tseshaht First Nation fisherman Bob Rupert found the butchered bear carcass in the water last Thursday evening when he went to check his wharf on Mission Road. “It freaked me out when I first saw it because I thought it was a human body, but I realized it was a bear carcass when I got closer,” Rupert said. The animal was floating on its back. It appeared small in size and was missing its head and paws. Its inner torso was exposed as well. “I’ve heard of this being done in other places, people cutting out parts and selling them, but I’ve never heard of it being done around here,” he said. Rupert reported the find to B.C. Conservation officers. “I hope they do something about it because this is just sick and sad.” The road is somewhat remote

but Rupert said he and nearby residents haven’t noticed anything out of the ordinary as of late. B.C. Conservation officer Mike deLaronde couldn’t speculate anything without seeing the carcass, but said being in the water would make it difficult to determine how long it’s been there. “It could have been scavenged by other animals as well,” he said. Carcasses in similar condition haven’t been reported in the Alberni Valley, deLaronde said. There is a legal bear hunting season on the Island right now that lasts until June. A rise in the Alberni Valley’s aboriginal population and increased facility use has prompted plans for the expansion of the Port Alberni Friendship Centre. PAFC official Donna Samuel made the announcement at Port Alberni City Council’s Monday night meeting. According to Samuel, the gym in the existing centre on Fourth Avenue has grown too small for the amount of people who use it. “The location has served us well but it (gym) is too small now,” Samuel said. “It’s not big enough to host the events that we do every year and we really want to expand.” Centre officials hope to use a swath of cityowned land between the centre and bottle depot on Fourth Avenue to grow out the centre’s gym. The land is approximately 68 by 125 feet in diameter
and is zoned for service commercial use, city planner Scott Smith said. The land would require re-zoning to the centre’s P1 Institutional to accommodate their expansion request, he said. The facility was formerly located on Second Avenue, but moved to its existing location in 1985 after it outgrew the original location. The existing facility is approximately 8,000 square feet but the gym is only half size and that’s proved a challenge in the face of Alberni’s growing urban aboriginal demographic. According to Statistics Canada, Port Alberni is home to more than 2,050 people who identify as aboriginal. More than 60 per cent of them live off reserve and in the city, Stats Can. noted. The friendship centre is the centre of gravity for much of Alberni’s urban aboriginal population, and offers a variety of educational,
employment, social and cultural support services. At the centre, the burgeoning population overcrowds the gym during Christmas dinners, Aboriginal Day celebrations and funerals. The centre also has a growing number of users for cultural and sports activities, co-presenter Simon Lucas said. The courtesy to the city is appreciated, Coun. Cindy Solda said. “But what is the bottom line, what do you want specifically?” The expansion is in its preliminary stages and there are more steps to be taken including fundraising, but officials want to apprise the city of their plans and suss out the availability of land either by sale or donation, Samuel said. In response to a question from Coun. Jack McLeman, Samuel said they’ve cursorily discussed the initiative with the city.

Central exchange part of bus expansion ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS
A new bus system with more frequent pickups and a central bus exchange is on the way in Port Alberni. The revamp is part of a service review that B.C. Transit undertook starting in
June 2011. The revamp will see a pulse system instituted. The crux of the new system will be a central transit exchange at 12th Avenue and Redford Street, by McDonalds where buses will lay over so riders can transfer to head either north or south.
The new schedule would be comprised of three routes that will operate Monday to Saturday, from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., and evenings and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. According to a transit report, the new routes will take 45 minutes to cycle instead of 60 minutes.
Bus ridership in the Alberni Valley is healthy and ranks sixth out of 81 transit systems in B.C., said James Wadsworth, B.C. Transit senior planner. The new routes will be streamlined by eliminating low use stops such as the top of Anderson

connecting Walmart to the Tseshaht Market was also identified in the report. The route would also include stops at Mission, Thomas, Gallic and Ekooth Roads, as well as Somass Crescent. The Tsesaht expansion required further study, as well as cost sharing discussions with the city, Tseshaht and the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District.

It is fitting that the Collins’ are the first to have a painted door in this new program, because Bud was the one who spearheaded the drive. He wants to see more tourists come uptown and thought painted doors would do it. Sixteen businesses on Argyle Street are lining up to be next, and several businesses from nearby avenues are also eager to participate, Larry McGifford of R.A.D. said. Arrowsmith Rotary is funding this initiative and R.A.D. is lining up artists to paint doors on site either the end of May or early June. The painted doors are just one phase of the street task force’s plan for Argyle Street, McGifford said. The Rotary Arts District received a $2,000 grant from BC Hydro to “wrap” hydro boxes uptown.

No cash for quay sign this year WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS
Call it a sign of things to come. Port Alberni City Council voted for staff to proceed with preliminary cost and design work for a new sign at the entrance to
Harbour Quay. The existing sign is old, has served its purpose, and is beyond repair, Parks and Recreation Director Scott Kenny said. The new sign will cost $15,000 to replace. There’s no money to do it in this year’s
budget so council voted to build the project into its 2013 budget. According to Kenny’s report, the problem is that the sign is made of vinyl material stretched over a metal frame. Grime has accumulated on the

Hoop star Nash part of school’s history From /3 Part of Laviolette’s routine involved getting back to the gym, which he’d be in periodically over the summer months. “Walking in the gym for the first time after the summers, I even remember the scent it had, he said. Laviolette coached the senior boys team with Jim Mayo his first year, and remembers something about every team he’s had. “I remember them by the music they played on the team bus. Every time I hear certain songs I remember which year and what team, he said. He speaks most poignantly of when now-Phoenix Suns guard Steve Nash played at the ADSS gym in 1992. The Armada and Saint Michaels University School traded victories and No. 1 and No. 2 rankings throughout the year, and they met for another showdown at Totem. “It was packed to the rafters and we had to turn away more than 200 people at the door, Laviolette said. SMU led by a comfortable margin at the half but the Armada went down fighting, losing the game by only three points. “It was exciting and I remember it, Laviolette said. “I think everyone has a memory like that in some way or another.

Bertha Levesque, a resident at Abbeyfield House, is 93 and says until five years ago she’d never spent a day in the hospital.
At 93 years old, Bertha Levesque says that until recently— four or five years ago—she had never stayed in the hospital. “I had to be there for the first time because of a broken foot. “Other than that, never before, even when I had my four children, who were delivered in my own house,” she says. Born in 1919 in Northern Saskatchewan, Levesque, now a resident at Abbeyfield (maiden name Doucette) came from an Acadian family from New Brunswick to homestead in the prairie province. There she did her formal education in a school house on the land donated by her father. She met and married George Levesque, a carpenter, and then moved to the west coast in 1944 with their children,

one boy and four girls. George and Bertha Levesque were married for over 60 years. They were both active with the Sunshine Club and the local branch of the Old Age Pensioners, where Bertha became its president, a position she held until
the group dismantled two years ago. As a carpet bowler and five- and 10-pin bowler, Levesque won many trophies. Three years ago she decided to sell her house and with no hesitation she moved to Abbeyfield, where she has made new friends and enjoyed the company of others. “I’m never in my room,” she says. “One of these times I will forget where it is,” she jokes. It is her nature to socialize and take part in many activities, and Abbeyfield suits her because of it. “I’m thankful of (the late) Terry Whyte for the opening of this place,” she said. “You cannot find another home for seniors like this one,” Levesque said.

The BCTF’s big gamble Try and imagine an NDP government B.C. teachers are taking a big gamble by pulling out of sports and other extracurricular activities. While the intended target of their campaign is the provincial government — which they want to withdraw Bill 22, the document enforcing mediation and new class size and composition rules — what teachers are more likely to experience is strained relationships and ‘Teachers... a drop in public support. Teachers, who have are likely to enjoyed strong parent experience support in their last two contract disputes, say strained must take this action relationships.’ they because the legal right to strike has been taken away from them. But few students and parents in the weeks ahead will be able to equate the loss or complication of planned school activities with larger issues the teachers seek to address. If they wish to keep the public on their side, B.C. teachers will need a deft communications strategy to explain why collective bargaining principles are more important than an end-of-year field trip or tournament — or grad. Events will go ahead anyway, leaving teachers with less clout and fewer relationships on which to build strong bonds. And for those students who struggle, there will be another reason to disengage when their favourite coach, choir or other sponsoring teacher stops giving their free time for political reasons or because they fear reprisals from their co-workers. All this heartache would be worth it if there was some tangible pay-off in the end. But the public education system has never been per fect and teachers will be hardpressed to explain how punishing kids is punishing the government. — The Tri-City News

ICTORIA – NDP victories in two byelections bring the standings in the legislature to 46 B.C. Liberals, 36 NDP and three independents, one of whom has pledged allegiance to the B.C. Conservatives. B.C. Conservative leader John Cummins put a brave face on his third-place finish in Port Moody-Coquitlam and Chilliwack-Hope. Even in bedrock conservative Fraser Valley farm country, in a protest byelection with a highprofile candidate, the B.C. Conservatives managed to attract just enough to deliver a landmark NDP seat. The NDP was helped by the absence of the B.C. Green Party on the byelection ballots, with most of its five-percent support from 2009 presumably going to the
winners. Cummins said his party’s goal going into the Port Moody-Coquitlam vote, with an unknown candidate and a handful of volunteers, was to break 10 per cent. They got 15 per cent and he declared a moral victory. Cummins rejected a possible merger with the “discredited” B.C. Liberals. Premier Christy Clark was equally emphatic that she will be the leader of the “free enterprise coalition” in the 2013 election. So the stage is set for an NDP majority government. What will that look like? Well, Port Moody mayorturned-MLA Joe Trasolini has a wealth of local government experience, so pencil him in as municipal affairs minister. A longtime supporter of the B.C. Liberals, Trasolini should clarify if he endorses the NDP constitution, which still opposes all profit-
making activity. He’s not the only highprofile newcomer likely to be included in an Adrian Dix cabinet. New NDP candidates from union executive ranks will likely include long-time Hospital Employees’ Union president Judy Darcy. She no longer talks about bringing a “Marxist analysis” to economic matters. Darcy is now best known for leading the long court battle against the B.C. Liberal government’s contractbreaking legislation of 2002. The eventual decision of the Supreme Court of Canada basically invented a constitutional right to collective bargaining. (The high court could also ponder if there might be a right not to belong to a union, but that’s another story.) Then there’s George Heyman, the long-

time B.C. Government Employees’ Union president. After leaving the BCGEU, Heyman has taken a turn as executive director of Sierra Club B.C., a branch plant of the U.S. enviro-machine that works against B.C. forest, mining, power and petroleum development. These folks would be working with Stephen Howard, who went from senior positions at the BCGEU and CUPE to his current role as Dix’s chief of staff. Dix, of course, benefited from the sudden ouster of Carole James, who made the mistake of trying to loosen big labour’s grip on the NDP and modernize some of its quaint 1930s notions. Then we have B.C.’s third-largest political party, the B.C. Teachers’ Federation, which has already confirmed it will continue its long campaign to replace the B.C. Liberals with the NDP next year. Such a team brings impressive experience. Continued / 15

To the Editor, I am a small business owner in Campbell River. On a daily basis I see two or three hopeful faces coming in with resumés. These people vary from young people right out of high school, to middle aged people forced to change careers. These people have heard there is a shortage of tradespeople, and have paid their hard earned money to educate themselves. The fact is that in B.C. we do not have jobs for these people. Unlike Alberta, we have seen a steady decline in industry and good paying jobs. We can all list several businesses that have closed down in the last five to 10 years just in our local area: Timberwest Sawmill, Catalyst Paper – Elk Falls, and Field Sawmill, just to name a few. The one light of hope we have in our area is the Raven Underground Coal Project. This project is committed to providing approximately 300 well-paying jobs to local people, and approximately 450
indirect jobs. Yes, that is correct, the opportunity for 750 well paying jobs on central Vancouver Island. Imagine the possibility of not having to leave your family to go work in Alberta. That could once again be a reality for hundreds of people. I am proud to say that my family is supported by environmentally responsible resource based companies such as Quinsam Coal, NVI Mining, Grieg Seafood and Western Forest Products. I encourage all those people currently looking for work, and all those that are fortunate enough to be currently employed on central Vancouver Island to stand up and lend support to the Raven Underground Coal Project. Otherwise your employer might be the next company forced to close its doors. Sandra Karason, Campbell River
Get rid of coal in Fanny Bay To the Editor, Christy Clark states, “We need to be listening to British Columbians.” For a starter, she should announce
that the Raven Coal mine planned for the Courtenay region be cancelled. This is how 90 per cent of the people feel about it. And she should quit hiding behind the Environmental Assessment Board, which is merely a sponge to absorb our negative feelings and a white-wash agency to further her own plans. Is she really listening? Doug Carrick, Hornby Island
Just say ‘no Bulldogs, no’ To the Editor, To the best of my knowledge, the Alberni Valley Bulldogs hockey team has lost money for five of the last six seasons. Therefore there’s a strong possibility that the present owners will want to move the team. Surprising? The solution apparently is for citizens to donate either $200 or $5,000 each to keep the team in the Valley to be run by a non-profit society with the taxpayers of the City of Port Alberni getting stuck with any losses. Certainly we know that the city and parks and recreation are involved up to
their eyeballs in this speculative venture, and that makes me very nervous. The last thing we taxpayers need is to pay for yet more losses to be added to the millions of dollars we’ve forked out over the last decade or two to keep the moneylosing, unpopular McLean Mill National Historic Site going. The timing of the proposed purchase must be questioned in light of today’s economic and social realities, in particular the situation surrounding Catalyst Paper. I do realize, however, that Sproat Lake residents seldom walk the South Port streets, so would be unaware of the moves/closures there since March 31. The Water’s Edge and Timber restaurants have closed, the old federal building across from city hall is now vacant, Love Rush is closing out, and the crisis-line has moved to North Port. Economic vitality we don’t have. But we have city hall remaining in isolated splendor, completely out of touch with reality. Go Bulldogs go! Richard Berg, Port Alberni

To the Editor, On April 23, Adrian Dix stood in the legislature mentioning a comment about the landside NDP victories in by-elections in Port Moody-Coquitlam and Chilliwack-Hope. Maybe if he would do his homework and analyze the results, he would slow down on his jumping from the hip attitude. In the Port MoodyCoquitlam 2009 election, the NDP came in second place with 7,614 votes, with a total of 19,134 taxpayers casting ballots. In the 2012 by election, the NDP came in first place with 6,070 votes with a total of 11,167 taxpayers casting ballots. I ask Adrian, what happened to the other 7,967 taxpayers that did not cast ballots? Dix is paid $152,789 to be an MLA. With such a good paying job, couldn’t he at least review the by-election data results instead of making outrageous comments about landside NDP victories? Joe Sawchuk, Duncan

Recently at the Spring meeting for all British Columbia Churches in our denomination we took part in a workshop on being a mentor/ disciple. Many of us at the workshop were a little overwhelmed at the thought of discipleship but we were reassured by the following verse “but in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect. 1 Peter 3:15. There are so many ways you can be a disciple. Here are a few (courtesy of the internet): You’ve got a telephone make a call. You’ve got a kitchen - make a meal. You’ve got two hands - put them to work for others. You’ve got two feet - go see a friend in pain. You’ve got two ears - listen to the cries of the wounded. You’ve got two eyes - lift them up to see the world as God sees it. You’ve got two lips - preach the Gospel of Peace. You can do it. Alberni Valley United Church

immigrant from Germany. He fell in love with Vancouver Island, making his home in Port Alberni for some years. His photographs in the collection of the Vancouver Public Library and the Alberni Valley Museum are still considered some of the greatest images of Canada’s west coast. Today we have a new appreciation of the craftsmanship practised by early settlers and have seen a revival of interest in all things made by hand. The turn of the century was the era of brass bands and concerts in the park. Port Alberni in 1912 boasted a bandstand on Argyle Street (replicated in scale now in the Rollin Centre garden). Mrs. Fred Rollin (nee Ellen Ohlsen) was the new town’s first music teacher. In the early 1900s, artists like Emily Carr began to draw attention to the art of First Nations people. Thanks to Carr and others like her, a record was created of many cultural treasures from the old coastal villages and

islands. Carr encouraged a young Tseshaht artist, George Clutesi, who wanted to revive the traditions of his own people in authentic paintings, stories, dance and song. He stands tall in the memories of all who knew him for his efforts to bring attention to a rich but neglected culture. Clutesi was a true Renaissance man, going on to national and international fame as writer, television and movie actor. The establishment of the Alberni Valley Art Group came about in 1943 “to relieve
some of the tension and stresses of wartime. The Community Arts Council came into existence in 1965, led by artist-teacher Robert Aller. Their first major project was staging the city’s initial festival of the arts in 1966 – a week-long affair that involved almost every organization in town. Then, as now, everything was volunteer-driven. It seems in some ways that we have gone full circle. The arts belong to the people and, as a community, we appreciate what culture means in our lives.

Routine Dental check ups are recommended twice a year and are important for maintaining healthy teeth and gums. A healthy mouth is important for your overall good health and many health complications have been linked to poor oral health. Professional regular dental cleanings can prevent a variety of dental and medical problems such as gum disease, infection, bone loss, heart disease, bacterial pneumonia, strokes and more. Gum disease is a bacterial infection that ultimately destroys the supporting structures of your teeth. If diagnosed early it can be treated and reversed if significant damage has not already occurred. Your dental hygienist will help ensure that you are maintaining good oral health with visual examinations and comparing previous measurements. If you are falling off track with your oral hygiene, we’ll help put you back on track. During dental cleanings, dental professionals are screening you for oral cancer, which has a high success rate of being cured when diagnosed early. So come see us regularly for check ups and cleanings, do your part with brushing and flossing and we can help you keep your original teeth and have a brilliant, white, healthy smile. We also offer Zoom (as seen on TV) which is a laser professional whitening system that gives you a brighter, whiter smile in just one office visit.

Add a rainbow of colour to your diet HELGIE NAESGAARD SPECIAL TO THE NEWS
Colour can improve not only the appearance of your food, but also the quality of your diet and your life. Let’s start with the rich red strawberries. Picked during June they demand attention, adding appetizing colour to plates. For exquisite flavour and maximum nutrition, devour local berries the same day
they’re picked. You might get even closer to your food source by planting your own berry plants, now in the spring. For the calorie-conscious, strawberries contain few calories relative to other berries and fruits, but are amongst the highest in vitamin C. Doctor Julie Garden-Robinson writes that many vegetables and red fruits such as strawberries, raspberries and red grapes contain natural plant pigments that keep our cells
and hearts healthy. Secondly, let’s focus on the orange/yellow produce group. Carrots, like sweet potatoes and pumpkins, contain a pigment called carotenoid, which helps to reduce the risk of cancer and heart disease and boosts the immune system. Carrots are great for the eyes, particularly in reducing the onset of age-related macular degeneration, which can lead to blindness. Thirdly, the green group of

Volumes have been written on the beneficial health qualities of herbs, but undoubtedly many of our customers purchase herb starter plants so they can conveniently pick fresh flavour from pots on their deck or patio. Dark green kale seems to have been rediscovered as a trendy super food, though Northern Europeans have consumed for generations. I’m surprised my skin isn’t tinted green as I grew up on kale and parsley. One expert calls kale the “Queen of Greens”…possibly ”the healthiest vegetable on the planet”. Like broccoli and cabbage, kale contains indole compounds, which may reduce the risk of cancers. Peas and beans in your garden provide fabulous flavour, protein, iron and vitamins, and also improve the fertility of soil by fixing nitrogen. I read that a “100-calorie serving of peas contains more protein than an egg or a tablespoon of peanut butter and has less than one gram of fat and no cholesterol.”

Helping out the ‘sandwich society’ best for everyone KENDAL KELLY SPECIAL TO THE NEWS
The Sandwich Society is that group of adults that are sandwiched between trying to maintain their immediate family’s needs, while continuing to perform their jobs well and care for an aging parent or parents. The demands on any adult living in this situation can be extremely stressful. They spend all of their time trying to give to others, and for the most part they do not have sufficient time to properly care for themselves. Worse yet, is that the burden becomes so great that everyone suffers. The family at home feel neglected because the caregiver is not around for those special Sundays, or the aging senior feels neglected because every time you are in their presence, you are in a hurry to get their chores done, and there is no quality time. Neither group understands the pressures you personally are under. And caregivers often get run down and suffer illness or disease. If you find yourself living in this situation, there are some opportunities to help with your responsibilities while giving the aging senior or seniors back some independence. If the person or persons you are caring for live on their own, equip the residence with proper safety equipment and mobility products that allow them to provide for many of their own needs. Bath lifts, stair lifts, walkers, scooters and the many living aid

products available allow them to maintain greater independence safely, and give them a feeling of purpose. Hire a housekeeper to come in once a week to clean the harder items, such as bathtubs, ovens and toilets.
Every neighbourhood has a youth looking for a summer grass cutting job, if not, professionals are fairly inexpensive. Find a taxi service or transport company that will take your loved ones to their appointments, and assist them getting in and out of buildings. For the senior, these changes help many find the aging process easier to accept. It allows them to take back some control in their lives. For the caregiver, rather than having to keep the yard, do the cleaning and shopping and run their parents to appointments, there will be time to actually sit and visit, or maybe take a day trip that ends with an ice cream. Likewise, it will relieve some of the worries and guilt many caregivers carry because they do not have the time to get everything done. By slowing the pace of their own lives, they may possibly use the newfound extra time to make sure that they are getting proper nutrition, exercise and sleep, as well as having some extra quality time with their immediate family. When considering some of these changes, it is important that the caregiver and the senior have an open conversation as to the reasons and the values. Likewise, for certain products, the family physician should be consulted to be sure that there are no health risks involved. Kendal Kelly owns the Comfort Zone, a
fabulous but they, like bananas, are good sources of potassium, benefiting muscles, nerves and brain cells. How potatoes are prepared makes the difference. A cooked potato contains just 26 calories. A large serving of fries from a fast-food outlet is a somewhat obscene 500 calories. A couple of other wonderful white veggies, onions and garlic contain allicins which help lower cholesterol and blood pressure. Like life, a diet unfolds as a work in progress, but continue to focus on worthy goals. My mantras: Eat slow food. Eat fresh. Eat local and seasonal. Grow some of your own. Diversify, experiment and include a rainbow of fresh fruits and vegetables in cuisine that you love to eat. Helgie Naesgaard owns and operates Naesgaard’s Farm Market on River

Physio-4: avoid back injury Follow these tips when lifting heavy loads and your back will thank you April 28 is the World Day for Safety and Health at Work. According to WorkSafeBC young males under the age of 25 are at the highest risk for a workplace injury and the No. 1 danger facing these young workers is lifting objects. With this in mind, the Physiotherapy Association of BC has put together a few tips on how to lift objects safely to prevent injury. “We can all use a reminder about how to lift and carry heavy objects, says Rebecca Tunnacliffe, CEO of the Physiotherapy Association of BC. “Whether at work or home, carrying boxes, lifting heavy objects and moving furniture can cause injury to the neck, shoulders and back. However, by following our Physio-4 for Lifting can greatly reduce the chance of injury from
lifting both on and off the job, adds Tunnacliffe. The Physio–4 for safe lifting comprises: • Warm up and plan before you lift. To get your blood flowing and your joints lubricated do some practice squats, heel lifts and arm circles first. • Plan ahead for your path of lifting; think twice, lift once. And, check to make sure the surface area is not slippery or uneven. • Lift with your legs, not your back. Stand as close as possible to the item you are lifting. Stand shoulder width apart and bend at the knees, not the waist, so you use your legs and core rather than your back to lift. If the item is big and heavy, get help or use a dolly. • Wear proper footwear. Don’t twist when you lift, move your feet
4545 Gertrude St. Port Alberni
to the new position. • Control the weight, don’t let it control you. If you are lifting more than one thing, balance the weight equally between both hands. The Physiotherapy Association of BC created the Physio–4 to share the expertise of its members with fellow British Columbians. “Each month on our website, movingforlife.ca, we provide four tips for a specific activity or health issue relating to that month to help keep British Columbians moving for life,â€? says Tunnacliffe. AND IMPLEMENT COMMON RATES On April 11, 2012, the FortisBC Energy Utilities applied to the British Columbia Utilities Commission to amalgamate their natural gas utilities across the province and to implement common rates and services across their service areas starting January 1, 2014. Currently, FortisBC Energy Utilities is made up of three separate natural gas companies, operating in six service areas. The companies have their own services, service agreements (tariffs) and rates. If approved, the application would combine the three companies into one, under a single tariff, with common rates for the various regions. This Application has different implications for customers in each service area. If approved, customers in the Vancouver Island and Whistler service areas will see rate decreases, while customers in the Lower Mainland, Columbia, Inland, and Fort Nelson service areas will see an overall rate increase. PUBLIC REVIEW PROCESS The Commission is initiating a review of FortisBC Energy Utilities’ Application. To view the timetable for this hearing and the Application go to www.bcuc.com select “Current Applications” under “Quick Links” and scroll to “FEU Common Rates, Amalgamation and Rate Design.” HOW TO GET INVOLVED If you wish to participate actively in the review process, you may register as an Intervener or an Interested Party with the Commission Secretary in writing, using the contact information at the end of this notice. Book donation a final wish SUSAN QUINN ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS
Laurel Herbert was a voracious reader. Her tastes ran the gamut from science fiction — Anne McCaffrey was a favourite author — to romance — think Nora Roberts — and everything in between. When Herbert found an author she liked, she would collect every book that author wrote. When you consider McCaffrey wrote close to 100 books and Roberts’ total is 189 and counting, that’s an impressive collection. Herbert, a Beaver Creek resident, housed her book collection in a bookcase one of her three brothers built for her.
SUSAN QUINN/ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS
Community Arts Council volunteers Jan Duncan, left, and Judy Francoeur sort through 75 boxes of books Jennifer Herbert donated to the annual book sale on behalf of her late daughter, Laurel.
Sadly, Herbert passed away at the age of 51 from an aggressive form of cancer in May 2011. Before she died, though, she asked that her books be donated to a charity so their sale would be of use to an organization. Laurel’s mother, Jennifer Herbert,
“The board is thrilled that (Laurel) would choose to honour us like this, book sale chairperson Bonnie Brandner said. Herbert took good care of her books and many of them are like new; the sale doesn’t often see like-new books, Brandner said. “This is a special donation, for sure. Though Jennifer Herbert first called the Rollin Art Centre last September, volunteers didn’t start
sorting through book sale donations until January. Then the arts council wanted to wait until a good weather day when volunteers were available to accept Herbert’s books. So far 400 boxes of books have been donated, including 75 of Herbert’s — almost a quarter of the total donations. The book sale takes place this year on Saturday, May 12 at Echo Centre. editor@albernivalleynews.com

songs from the more recent past, and as usual have put on their own twist. Special guest, Anna Lewis, will play the fiddle. Lewis is a Port Alberni girl and Alberni District Secondary School graduate. She started playing the violin when she was four
years old and now plays with Phil’s Harmonics String Orchestra. Other special guests include Lothar Haack on recorder, Wayne Janzen on drums and Phil Wallbank on the violin and recorder. Tickets for Those Were the Days are $10 and available from
In special honour of Port Alberni’s Centennial and Arts in Culture Week April 22-28, the Community Arts Council will host a free Celebrating the Arts Centennial Tea on Saturday, April 28 from 1–3 p.m. The event will pay homage to the important role the arts have played in our community during the past 100 years. The tea will include a commemorative planting of Port Alberni’s Centennial tree, a Dogwood, in the Rollin Art Centre garden. A children’s “growing the arts” seed planting activity will also be included.
The back nine holes

the format of “Mutt & Jeff ” was taken very seriously by the ladies of the 18 Hole Division. Each player had to turn in a “Mutt” score by totalling their Net score on all Par 3’s. The “Jeff ” score was the total of their Net score on all Par 5’s. This was a separate score to be handed in by each player. There were four “Mutts” tied for first place. Kathy White, Joan Thompson, Anna Marie Krikke and Pat Nicklin. A tie breaking draw was done to determine the winner and Pat Nicklin walked away with the prize. “Jeff ” was taken by the one and only, Barb Sheare. Low Gross score was carded by Janice Cross coming in with a 90 while Kathy White place first for the Low Net category with a 73. Be sure to check the bulletin board in our lounge area for upcoming Tournaments...one big one is the Zone Am/Sr
two day tournament to be held on May 17/18 at Eaglecrest. They’re looking for more players for this ever popular event... and Mt. Brenton is always a fun tourney with great prizes. That one will be coming soon as well. There will be a gardening work-bee at the Golf Club on Wednesday, May 2... sign up by calling Sharien Williams through the Pro shop or get your name on the list which is circulating at the Club House if you can spare a little time and energy. Bring your own gardening tools and get ready to work those golf muscles on the flower beds! In the meantime, bone up on the rule book...there will be challenging questions asked by the rules committee...player with the most correct answers on their quiz takes home a prize. Next week golf is followed by our monthly meeting. Golf will be a shotgun
start at 8:30 a.m. Call Gayle Rhodes if you will not be playing. Ladies 9 Hole Division A Div...Low Gross was taken by Marie Swain who also came in with the lowest amount of putts. Swain was also able to Par holes No. 2 and No. 4. Sweet. Katy Lekich was the recipient of the Low Net score. B Div...Low Gross scorer was Lorraine Wilson who also tied for Low Putts with June Parks. Leslie Anderson came in with the Low Net. Want to hone up your golfing skills? Contact Katy Lekich who will be setting up golf clinics with Assistant Pro., Brian Rands. These clinics will be held on Tuesday afternoons after the mornings golf game. Business Ladies Last weeks kp’s were for holes No. 2 and No. 4. There was no winner for No. 2...does that mean that nobody hit the green?
Blind partners event a hoot for players KNOX COUPLAND Alberni Golf
Sunday the Men’s Club held the Blind Partners event. Winners on the gross side were Jim Proteau and Glen Trask. Second low gross went to Craig Acland and Dave Mann. The net side was topped by Bill Barrett and Jim Petersen followed by Cal Davies and John Jones while Jack Sparks and Don MacGowan rang up third place. The mystery hole Sunday was No. 12 with both Gerry White and Don MacGowan recording two. Next week the Mystery hole will be a carry over of $210. Closest to the pin winners were Bill Kriwokon on No. 2. But Bill was still in the groove nailing closest to the pin on
the charity hole No. 4 for a reward of $31. Gerry White put his second shot closest to the pin on No. 6, Jim Petersen on No. 13 and Bob Matlock took the prize on No.17. Up next for the Men’s Club is the MacDermotts Insurance Agency Waltz, which is happening Sunday April 29. This is a four man team event. The format is, on hole No.1 you count the best net, on hole No. 2 count the best two nets and on hole No. 3 you count the best three nets. Then you start over again counting the best low net on #4.until all 18 holes have been played. With a shotgun start you adjust the scoring format so that every one contends equally on all holes. For example if you start on No. 11 you count the best two nets and carry on from there.
