Fun fundraising... 100 Mile House Special Olympics members held a fundraising and awareness event at Safeway on April 20-21 and appeared to have a good time meeting folks. Safeway manager Sean Watson, right, noted that they raised around $1,200 between the collection jar at the table and what the tills brought in.

B.C. Liberal Labour Minister Margaret MacDiarmid is defending changes to the workplace regulation that required employers to provide a secure barrier for night-shift employers who work alone. Changes, which allow another option for operators of gas stations, convenience stores and other 24-hour businesses, took effect April 15. Rather than have a security barrier or more than one employee present, the regulation allows employers to put in video surveillance and a call button for employees. The original regulation is known as Grant’s law, after Maple Ridge gas station
employee Grant De Patie, who was run over and killed in 2005 when he tried to stop a driver from leaving without paying for gasoline. On April 16, MacDiarmid said the main provision of Grant’s law is mandatory prepayment for gasoline, and that remains. WorkSafeBC offered the new option after four years of consultation, she added. “With a small family-run business that may be open late at night, it’s often somebody from the family who is working there. If they’re forced to put in a barrier that may cost upward of $50,000 or more, the business is going to fold. “So they were listened to, and those other safety measures will be taken. ing in May as I understand it.” NDP labour critic Raj Chouhan objected to the government’s claim there have been no more incidents since the regulation went into effect in 2005. Video surveillance does not provide immediate protection for people working alone at night, and there have been close calls, he said. “When somebody comes in and threatens a worker working alone at night, all they have now is some kind of a bell that they can press and it goes to somewhere. “In one incident where I have spoken with a person, this worker called, and it went to the manager’s cell phone. The cell phone was off in the middle of the night. There was no help.”

Assistance sought for Books for Babies program By Shelly Joyner So many of us take reading for granted, but the truth is we must make learning to read and loving to read a part of everyday life if we want our children and our community to be a healthy vibrant place to live. Providing early learning through books, the Books for Babies (BFB) program is one way we can make a difference The BFB program is an important part of the Cariboo Chilcotin Partners for Literacy Society (CCPL) since literacy begins with spoken language. Babies love to hear their parents’ voice and books give parents something to talk about. When read over and over and over again, a good story gives children the chance to learn language. Books for Babies recognizes, celebrates and supports parents as their child’s first and most important teachers. The CCPL encourages new parents to share books with their children from birth throughout the teen years. If you are a new parent, you will find five board books in the BFB book bags this year to share with your new baby. The BFB project in 100 Mile House has been giving book bags to new parents since 2001. Volunteer community efforts are at the heart of this family literacy programs’ success in 100 Mile. This years’ program is made possible by health nurses who take on the essential responsibility for delivering the book bags to parents of newborns. The Cariboo Regional District Library donated 18-month bags with another board book

The Louisiana Hayride was a live radio show, broadcast over KWKH Radio in Shreveport, Louisiana and ran successfully from 1948-1960. It was instrumental in establishing the careers of such artists as Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline, Marty Robbins, Jim Reeves, Roy Orbison and many more artists. Our rendition in story and song, takes you back to those days and that live radio show. Find out why Roy Orbison wore dark sunglasses and where and when the phrase “Elvis has left the building” was first spoken. Great stories, great songs. For more information on the show, google Gil Risling Hayride.

Less garbage found on Earth Day By Reg Berrington A group of the 108 Lions under the guidance of president Peter Tonkin met at the 108 Lake Main Beach on Earth Day (April 22). The Lions were split up into small groups and the beaches and lakeside trails were checked and cleaned up. It was later noted there was less garbage to pick up this year. Maybe at long last, the message has got through to people using the trails to take their garbage home.

Bright Red Bookshelf drive underway By Melody Newcombe The Second Annual Bright Red Bookshelf (BRB) drive is now on in 100 Mile House. Children and teachers in our elementary schools are busy collecting gently used children’s books. Between April 15 and May 15, each local elementary school has a red book drive box that the students are decorating with their names, pictures, their favourite stories and just having some fun with while collecting books. The schools have promoted the book drive through their newsletters to parents. Our community partner Cedar Crest Society for Community Living cleans, labels and distributes books to the BRB locations. Books can be dropped off at Canlan Ice Rink

The North American Intercollegiate Dairy Challenge nationals are completed and Robin Diether of 100 Mile House, who participated on the University of Alberta (U of A) team, says it was a learning experience. “We analyzed a 500 head Holstein dairy in Southwestern Virginia, which was absolutely beautiful, and it was a great visit to a different part of the world. After he was on the winning team at the Western North America Regional competition in California in March, he travelled to Virginia on March 29-April 1 to compete in the nationals. He explains each of the 32 four-person student teams from 30 different schools received information on one of four real-life dairy farms, including production and farm management data. The U of A team reviewed and visited Hodges View Farm to perform an operation evaluation, develop a comprehensive program, including recommendations in various areas, and present them before a panel of judges. “We singled out reproduction, lameness and pen grouping as the main areas of concern, along with finances and the transition of the farm within the family. U of A and the University of Guelph were the only teams there from Canada, he notes, but neither team was among the eight winning squads. His father and mother, Rob and Lorraine Diether, of Horse Lake, are pleased at his success. “We’re proud of Robin and pleased he is eager to take on a challenge such as
Robin Diether this, says Rob. “Robin seems to be at ease in these situations and took the opportunity to do some travelling as well. The confidence Robin has will bode him well in his future career choice as a veterinarian, he adds, With a background in family ranching, Diether plans to return to 100 Mile
setting. A recent dinner/ auction in 100 Mile, organized by local rancher Gus Horn, raised funds to cover Diether ’s travel expenses. “I would like to thank the South Cariboo for their support in making this all possible, he says.

The guitar class played “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy,” “The Work Song” and “You Better Leave it Alone.” The songs were performed before two adjudicators and the other musicians. The adjudicators were given the music to follow along and they give the tips and options on different interpretations and techniques, Reichardt explains. “Me and the drummer did some improv stuff,” he says, smiling. The judges must have liked what they heard and saw because the class came away with silver. A relative newcomer to the guitar, the Grade 12 student has been playing for about four-and-a-half years. On April 18 at 2:59:32 a.m., 108 Mile Lake’s ice went off, the flag went up, and the clock stopped, officially announcing the end of the 108 Mile Ranch Lions Club annual Ice-off Contest. Brad Dycke was the winner of the contest and he receives $100 for guessing closest to the time at 12:35 a.m. “Everything went pretty well,” says 108 Lions member Jim Gellein. “I was a little worried at first, but it seemed everyone waited until just before deadline to buy their tickets.” Seven other winners are: Al Blannin, 10 tickets from The Hills Health Ranch; D. Cookman, hooded sweater from 108 Supermarket; Dawson Simpkins, two large pizzas from 108 Esso/La 108 Pizzaria; Blannin, gift certificate from Ingrid’s Footcare; Mitch McLauchlin, gift certificate from Dowes Diner, Bruce Beidler, gift certificate from 108 Building Supply; and Bonnie Hamilton, gift cer-
tificate from Vidas Restaurant. “I was pretty amazed at the ticket sales,” says Gellein. “We sold 300 tickets and raised $600, which I believe is a record.” He adds the money raised will go towards the Lions community and area projects.

South Cariboo Garlic Festival will be a rockin’ good time Heather Nelson Free Press
The 13th annual South Cariboo Garlic Festival (SCGF) is gearing up for a rockin’ stinkin’ good time on Aug. 25 - 26 at the festival grounds in Lac la Hache. We have a full slate of entertainers already booked for both days, says organizer Jeanette McCrea. “This year, Elvis will be here; it’s pretty exciting.” Steve Elliott, aka Elvis Elite, has appeared in 100 Mile House previously and contacted McCrea, saying he wanted to be involved this year Other entertainers booked for the festival, include Candace Copely, Jessie Lee
Band, Soupbone, The James Gang, Tanis Family Mountain Music, Third Degree, A Perfect Match, Mosquito Creek Band, and Barely Bluegrass. The Mad Hatter will be back performing for the children, McCrea says, adding the entertainment lineup is complete thanks to co-ordinator Doug Steven. They have 26 vendors signed up so far, but the spots will be filled, says McCrea. “We had 80 vendors last year. I’m expecting more this year and have room for expansion.” This year, the festival committee members will put a cover over the picnic tables, which were donated by Interior Roads last year.
This will shield participants and the tables from the elements, McCrea says, adding that having the seating area close to the stage was a benefit to everyone. This year, they will start the access trail and she notes it will be a continuing project with the trail winding along the lake from the heritage site to past the tables at the festival grounds. Funding for the trails is from a Development Trust Initiative endorsed by the Cariboo Regional District to help develop wheelchair-accessible wilderness trails. McCrea says part of the $40,000 grant (shared with three other local groups)
NEW LISTINGS
plus $10,000 that came from the Lac la Hache Community Association proceeds from last year’s Garlic Festival will help pay for the trail. “There is lots of free parking at the site including space for RV’s and handicap spaces available, but it will be vendoronly camping.” Adding that there is no overnight camping and people are asked to keep their dogs at home. For more information, visit the website www.garlicfestival. ca/ or call McCrea at 250-395-3568.

Artist showing at Iron Horse Heather Nelson Free Press
Local artist Lisa Haerttrich (nee Giroux) will be presenting some of her art pieces at the Iron Horse Pub, starting at 3 p.m. on April 29 with the Wine, Cheese & Art Gathering. “I’ve got four large saw blades in oil, and two large cotton wood slabs; one is a painting of steam engine, the other is a sled dog team in northern lights,” she says. “I’ll be bringing a painted long-horn skull, too.” If there is space she will bring some of her canvas paintings. Haerttrich has been painting for the past 20 years, and says she does everything from nature scenes and pets to portraits in different mediums of oil,

acrylic, and watercolour. She has also done commission work for people in this area. “I hope people come and attend the show. It will be my first at the pub, although I have done shows in this area in the past; my most recent show was in Hope.” A Parkside Art Gallery member, Haerttrich’s new business card will read Mona Lisa’s Gallery. Years ago, she and her mother Vivian Giroux owned Artistic Headhunters.
