MLA Bill Bennett The Learning Improvement Fund is being targeted to support students with special needs by hiring additional teachers and teaching assistants, providing additional teaching time and funding professional development and training to help teachers address the complex needs in their classrooms. The BC Education Plan Fund is being targeted to programs to support struggling readers so that students receive the interventions and support they need to develop strong reading skills, which is the critical foundation to success in school. Additional Info: ¡ The B.C. government is doubling the Learning Improvement Fund from $30 million to $60 million for the coming school year. The increase is due to province wide operational savings of $37 million resulting from last month’s three-day teachers’ strike. ¡ All of the strike savings will remain with school districts with $30 million being applied to Learning Improvement Fund, and the remaining $7 million to be used by school boards for educational priorities in their respective districts. ¡ For more information on the Learning Improvement Fund, please visit http:// www.newsroom.gov. bc.ca/2012/04/strikesavings-boost-bcslearning-improvementfund.html. ¡ For more information on the BC Education Plan Fund, please visit http://www.newsroom. gov.bc.ca/2012/03/students-help-chart-thefuture-of-bc-education. html.

Denise's Weekly Features LeafSource stops customers pain within days “It works! I’ll take another two bottles please!
This coming from a customer who had tried every other natural remedy under the sun in the past few years to take away her pain. Ian, the owner of the health food store couldn’t believe his ears. He had ďŹ nally found the perfect product to stop his customer’s miseries. This is what every owner of a health food store dreams about, a natural product that receives so many outstanding testimonials on such a wide variety of health issues. “I had recommended a new product called LeafSource, which we recently started carrying. We have had tremendous success with this product, and almost everyone we have recommended it to over the last few months has come back and thanked us over and over againâ€? said Ian. Before trying LeafSource, the woman had complained about her ongoing joint pain and was at her wit’s end. Although she had experienced some relief through the numerous natural remedies she had tried over the years, the pain would never fully go away.“She returned to my store, in tears, less than one week after buying LeafSource. I didn’t know what to make of this woman standing in front of me crying, until she told me that within a few days of taking LeafSource her pain started to disappear and within a week it was completely gone - as if it was never there.â€? Ian goes on, “This coming from a woman whose painful joints and ongoing sciatica were so bad just one week earlier, that the pain was unbearable but now has completely subsided.â€? By now you are probably wondering what is LeafSource and why is it so effective? LeafSource is a 100% natural product derived from a proprietary organic mineral composite with
over ten years of university research. LeafSource helps regulate the inammatory process and the body’s ability to repair itself. The vast majority (70 - 80%) of the population over the age of 50 have joint problems — often called osteoarthritis. This is due to the natural (or unnatural) wear and tear on joint tissue that develops through the aging process. With joint in ammation, movement is limited and pain can be constant. LeafSource seems to have the ability to help people get their mobility and zest for life back. Millions of people seek treatment for their joint and inammation problems by resorting to expensive, toxic prescription drugs (i.e. NSAIDs) with multiple side effects. These range from nausea and vomiting to serious intestinal disorders (bleeding, gas, pain) and even kidney and liver failure. Isn’t that too large a price to pay for a little pain relief!? LeafSource is a safe alternative to these destructive anti-inammatory drugs that cause more problems than they solve. There are absolutely no side effects and it doesn’t interfere with any other medications. Controlled experiments and observations have revealed that LeafSource is a potent anti-in ammatory that has been shown to bring a reduction to in ammation and pain within a few days. People notice great results in terms of more energy and less pain by taking anywhere from 2 to 6 capsules/day. Typical maintenance is usually 1 capsule twice daily. This product gets results! LeafSource is scientiďŹ cally validated through more than 10 years of research at 4 universities, including the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Mercer University. Aside from its incredible anti-in ammatory and pain reducing ability, it has also been shown to improve the performance of your daily nutrition
and vitamin programs. It helps increase the absorption of vital nutrients, which in turn helps these nutrients work better. Better absorption = better results! It’s almost as if they have become s u p e r charged! 120 V-Capsules LeafSource has also been shown to help enhance energy levels, improve intestinal health, strengthen hair, skin and nails and improve immune function. To see someone go from intense pain to a new lease on life within a week is truly incredible. Imagine being able to move freely without pain. Who wouldn’t want to get out of bed in the morning with more energy? It’s amazing how much of this stuff we take for granted, until it’s gone! Ian adds,“I often recommend that LeafSource be taken with other natural joint products in order to help them work better and provide even faster relief. One of the things I hear most often from people who have tried LeafSource is they just plain feel better, have more energy and less pain. We’re so conďŹ dent, we guarantee LeafSource 100%! That alone should be enough to try this incredible product.â€?

Food to treat pain Pain is one of the most common complaints that patients report to their physicians. Last week I wrote about how pure omega three fish oil in the triglyceride form can reduce inflammation and pain. Notably, a number of studies have found it particularly helpful for back pain. Non-steroidal antiinflammatories (NSAID’s) are common go-to drugs for people who have pain. While these drugs are very good at blocking pain, they also block the healing capacity of the body. People with arthritis who take NSAID’s report lower levels of pain but their disease progresses faster than those who do not use NSAID’s. This fact highlights the importance of using pain medications that reduce pain and inflammation and do not block the body’s ability to heal. Dr. Oz, on one of his recent shows, talked about just one such medication. It is called Zyflamend and it has been widely studied, particularly in people with back pain
and muscle inflammation. This supplement contains a mixture of 10 different anti-inflammatory and antioxidant herbs including tumeric, ginger, rosemary, green tea and oregano. These herbs sound more like dinner than pain medication. Do not, however, let their commonplace names deceive you. This combination of herbs is widely used in natural medicine circles and has been very well tested in patients with pain and inflammation and found to be safe and effective. Some of the constituents in this formula can mildly thin the blood so patients who are on blood thinners should only use under the guidance of a qualified health care practitioner. A typical dose is 1 capsule twice daily taken in the middle of a meal to improve absorption. It is also important to make sure you are eating a healthy, whole foods diet low in refined sugars, animal fats and common allergens like wheat and dairy.

easy to build, as there are no walls involved, and straightforward plans and gazebo kits are readily available in stores. If you decide to go for a personalized design, your biggest challenge will be in cutting the framework to size. However you approach this project, you should always check municipal building regulations before getting down to work. Once you have obtained a construction permit, prepare the ground with a layer of limestone gravel compacted with a roller. There are many architectural styles to choose from, ranging from simple to extremely complicated. Four, six, or eight sides, closed or open: it all depends on what you will use it for. To guide you in your choice of style, remember that a gazebo can be enjoyed as much by the children as by their parents. You might want to make it big enough to include a play area, a place for family meals, or a relaxing corner for reading. Think about adding trellises or mosquito screens on the sides, as well as double doors or an up-and-over opening to ensure that your gazebo is as user-friendly as possible. Landscaping around the gazebo is also an important element of this project. Once it is covered in vegetation, the gazebo will blend beautifully into your back yard.
Kootenay News Advertiser Monday, April 30, 2012
www.kootenayadvertiser.com A5 a signi¿cantly higher number of mosquitos in 2012, compared to the mosquito population experienced in 2011. Mosquitoes go through four distinct stages of development during their life: egg, larvae, pupa and adult. Eggs are laid on the surface of standing water or on soil that is prone to Àooding. When in contact with water during the spring and summer, the eggs hatch as larvae, which feed on plant material and quickly develop into pupae. The pupae then mature into adult mosquitoes, which emerge from the surface of the water. Following mating, adult females search for a blood meal to complete egg development.
This year set to be mosquito-heavy The 2012 City of Cranbrook Mosquito Control Program is now underway. The Mosquito Control Contractor has been undertaking biological control efforts directed at the mosquitoes in the larval stage. This is achieved by identifying and monitoring sites where mosquito larvae are present and applying a granular mosquito larvicide, Aquabac. This larvicide contains a naturally occurring bacterium known as Bti, which targets mosquito larvae, but does not harm birds, mammals, bene¿cial insects or amphibians. This product is registered for this use in Canada. The mosquito development sites have been carefully monitored and treated with Aquabac. These sites are continually treated throughout the spring and summer. Effective mosquito control must combine the efforts of individual land/homeowners with those of the City of Cranbrook Mosquito Control Program. Rainfall, snow melt and
rising river heights in the spring and summer result in the Àooding of many low lying areas which can serve as mosquito development sites. Site monitoring by the Mosquito Control Contractor’s staff is conducted on a continuous basis throughout the late spring and summer to determine the species, number and level of maturity of mosquito larvae present during this period. Early monitoring of this year’s larvae population indicates residents of the City of Cranbrook can expect

Do you collect
English wine yet to find legs La Dolce Vita By Lorne Eckersley
When we began making plans to visit England, one of my desires was to visit an English winery. English winery? Yes, there are a few, and we knew that only because British friends who live part of the year in the Creston Valley brought some over for our wine group to taste a couple of years ago. So there we were last week, tooling along the freeway with those same friends, heading toward Three Choirs Vineyard, a good hour northeast of Bristol, in a triangle whose points are formed by Hereford, Gloucester and Worcester. The country is rolling and lush green, even in late March, and it looks for all the world like it should be able to support a wine industry, until you think about the long periods during which residents experience mostly grey and gloomy skies. The sun-drenched skies we experienced in Bristol and London were, we were told, an anomaly. When we arrived at Three Choirs Vineyard, we were greeted with a surprisingly unattractive sign, the words “Wittingtons Brewery” appearing more prominently than the name of the winery. The winery and vineyard offer a variety of appeals to the visitor, including tourist accommodations and a ¿ve-barrel brew plant. Whether that is an indication that the wine business isn’t a big moneymaker isn’t clear
to me. Our group had lunch reservations for the restaurant at Three Choirs and we had to hustle to make it in time—we were driving from Lacock, a fantastic historical village that has been the setting for some ¿lming of the Harry Potter movies. Lunch was very nice and we enjoyed a bottle of Three Choirs 2010 Rosé and there wasn’t a thing wrong with it. As memory serves, we had the same response to the British wines we had sampled a few years earlier. They were well made and gave us nothing to complain about. And therein lies the rub. For centuries, British residents have had quick, easy and often cheap access to wines from France, where long history and a marginally better climate gives winemakers a distinct leg up over the relative newcomers in England and Wales. One suspects that the success of wineries and vineyards lies more in their novelty than anything else. The British don’t have any disdain for the French and they also have historically held close connections to the Spanish and Portugese wine industries. Unless the buy local movement takes off, if it has even started, I’d say wine producers in England are up against it. Statistics seem to bear that out. In 1992, English winemakers produced about 3.2 million bottles of white wine and in 2010 they produced just under 3.3 million
bottles. But in 2007 that number dropped to just over a million. Obviously, production quantities are extremely weather dependent. And when I stopped in to check out the selection of wines at a shop in London, I learned that French wine prices can easily meet or beat those of English wines. All that is likely an indication of how much is going on at Three Choirs. A brewery. Tourist accommodation. A restaurant. Cooking courses. An adopt-a-vine program. And, perhaps even more telling, the use of the Geneva Double Curtain vine trellising, which I haven’t seen used in any other vineyard I have visited. This system “effectively doubles the cropping potential of each vine”, according to signage in the vineyards. We noticed the wide spacing between plants and the long woody stems kept to support the coming year’s crop of grapes, both signs that quantity and not quality are the major concern. In some ways, the English vineyards seem to be where the BC wine industry was 30 years ago. Better grape clones, improved vineyard management and yes, climate change, have all helped our own industry blossom. England is neighbor to some of the great wine producers of the world, so it would seem that climate change is the country’s best bet for the future. It isn’t something I’d base an investment on.

Kimberley continues to battle spring run-off flooding

Submitted City Of Kimberley of¿cials have issued an evacuation alert for Morrison Subdivision and a portion of Wallinger Avenue as Àood waters in Kimberley Creek rose almost two feet overnight in the midst of heavy rainfall. Morrison Subdivision and the section of Wallinger Avenue with houses numbered 2 to 98 remain on an evacuation alert. To date, 11 homes have been evacuated and 29 people are in temporary lodging. Water levels dropped slightly overnight and water diversion efforts were successful in moving most of the waters off of Wallinger Avenue and into the storm water system in Kimberley. A Ministry of Forests Unit Crew from Revelstoke arrived late last night and spent the morning re-wrapping lock blocks in protective plastic and repositioning sandbags to prepare in case Àood waters should rise. Approximately 40 people attended an information meeting at the Kimberley Curling Club this morning where City of¿cials provided an update on the current situation and listened to questions and concerns. “It was important to us to meet with the community. We are very appreciative for the feedback that was provided and have already acted on some of their suggestions, including reducing non-resident traf¿c
into Morrison Subdivision and on Wallinger Avenue,” says Kimberley Mayor Ron McRae. The City is also reminding all residents to use extreme caution in and around the creeks in the community. “Our priority is making sure people are safe and we cannot stress enough the importance of staying away from the creeks during high water,” adds McRae. A reception centre has been set up at the Kimberley Curling Club and the City is asking anyone choosing to leave their homes in this area is being asked to check in at the reception centre.

If, for some reason, you can’t show your mother how much you appreciate her on a daily basis, Mother’s Day is your chance. Mothers give so much of themselves to their children, from the time they’re babies, through childhood and beyond the trials of adolescence. That’s half a lifetime spent caring for their children! Honoured since antiquity, motherhood represents the source of life and nurturing. Why not make your cherished mother’s greatest wish come true for Mother’s Day? If you and your sibling haven’t been on speaking terms for months, if you’re annoyed with a family member over a triÀe, why not bury the
hatchet, turn the page, and try to get along for your mother’s sake. A family reconciliation might very well be the most wonderful gift she could receive. Perhaps you don’t demonstrate the love you feel for your mother on a regular basis. Mother’s Day is the ideal moment to express this love, with heartfelt wishes, gifts, or gestures that will go straight to her heart. If you have a limited budget, offer her some quality time, spent together doing an activity she particularly loves. Or help her out with some chores she

Another great idea is to develop the habit of expressing your gratitude to your mother and spoiling her every chance you get. It will allow you to build a closer relationship with her, something that might feel great for both of you. Why wait for Mother’s Day to show your affection to the one who gave you life and to tell her how much you love her?

Your mom deserves some extra thought for her gift. Here are some personality-based gift ideas that are sure to please your mother no matter what her style, interests, or age. FOODIE MOMS Why not an apron embroidered with her ¿rst name, a gourmet box of chocolates, or a fancy high-quality kitchen gadget? If your budget is more ample, she would surely love a gastronomic weekend away, with meals featuring local products and a couple of nights in a cozy inn. T E N D E R HEARTED MOMS
Opt for a heart-shaped locket, a jewellery box engraved with a loving message, or a digital photograph frame ¿lled with family photos. Or how about a personalized novel in which she plays the heroine and recounts her experiences as a young woman or as a mother. ACTIVE MOMS If she loves being active but is hesitant to treat herself, offer her some sports equipment that she wouldn’t splurge for herself. Or make a gift of a shortor long-term membership at the nearest gym
or a few sessions with a personal trainer. CURIOUS MOMS How about a subscription to a newspaper or magazine, a tablet computer, or books about different travel destinations? You could also offer a daytrip to a museum or art gallery in a neighbouring town or city. P A M P E R E D MOMS If your mom loves feeling pampered, then a massage followed by dip in a thermal spa is just the thing. A box of different herbal teas or coffees would also be well received, as would bath products or a pair of ultra-comfortable slippers. NOSTALGIC MOMS She might adore a mixed CD or an e-tunes playlist with music from her youth. Or how about a vintage decorative item or, even better, an object dating from her year of birth that a grandparent might have tucked away.

Local women travel to Ottawa for Youth Centre Canada conference Darelyn Hutchinson and Sandra Davis were honored to be able to attend a national youth conference; “Ignite and Unite” held in our nation’s capital Ottawa by the Youth Centre Canada. Both participants gained a great deal of insight & inspiration through powerful key note speakers, bragging sessions, meeting, interacting, sharing and learning from others across the country. “I was amazed to see the inner strength and power in the youth at the conference in only a few short days” said Davis. “This was their conference, they were in charge and had the Àoor to speak up and initiate change from their own perspective – youth perspective. It was fantastic!” The group had a role, the task at hand for the year was to look at, discuss and make recommendations on the Chief Public Health Of¿cer’s Report on the State of Public Health in Canada 2011 Youth & Young Adults-Life in transition. The topics chosen to work on were: Exploring sexuality; addressing youth suicide; addressing bullying; addressing substance abuse; Exploring Self-Esteem; Youth Retention, Engagement and Attraction Through Youth Centers. For 2 long days we worked tirelessly on the report, “I felt so proud of these youth for expressing themselves openly, caring deeply for one another and honoring each other for who they are.” Says Davis “One of the highlights of the conference was when we loaded onto 3 large school buses to ascend on Parliament Hill,” recalls Hutchinson, “It was a beautiful day and one I will always remember.” There were representatives from every province and the Northwest Territory. We met people from prairies, lakes, oceans, cities, villages and islands. Our backgrounds varied, but our core was the same, we all shared in passion of youth owning their voice and sharing experiences. Youth Centres Canada, formerly known as TYPS, is a recognized national leader in Youth Centre, Youth Council and Youth Initiative development. Their goal is to support community
based Youth Centres and Youth Initiatives serving communities of all sizes and cultural diversity. They work to have Youth Centres publicly recognized as being an integral part of Canadian society. Youth Centres Canada works to support and build capacity and provide resources, programs and opportunities for youth. As Lisa Davis, Adult Board Chair put it in her address “I am impressed by the maturity & competence of our youth board members which bodes well for the future. This is not to say these youth are the future, just as the youth attending this conference are not. These youth are RIGHT NOW!! You are leaders and doers; Right Now you are making a change in your communities and in Canada and I am inspired by all of you.” “We would like to thank all of those who helped
make this a reality. To represent Cranbrook at a National level was incredible” says Hutchinson. “I saw an amazing passion in these youth due to the adversity they have had to overcome. A passion that tells them they can do anything because they can. I know many Cranbrook youth have this passion too, and I am excited to see what happens with our youth in the future because of the knowledge and resources I have gained from this trip.” Hutchinson is still in touch with some of the people she met and she wants to make a difference in her community. Although Youth Centres Canada picked up a huge chunk of the bill to bring us out, funding fell short because of our rural location and distance to travel. Our community pitched in on very short notice. “We were able to raise just enough funds with a small por-
tion left over to start us off again next year”, says Hutchinson, “I want to take some kids from Cranbrook to this again next year” Our community can and does rally together to support causes. Both Davis & Hutchinson want to send a special thank you to their major contributors: Ktunaxa Nation Council, Regional District of East Kootenay, ANKORS, BCGEU Cross Component Committee & Local 308, Kin Club of Cranbrook, and Aqanttanam Housing Society. They also wish to recognize those city councilors who dug into their personal pockets to pitch in to this initiative.
