Annual wild turkey hunting season is on by Mark Hall On April 15 the annual spring wild turkey season opened in region 4 and hunters will take to the woods in search of the elusive wild Tom turkey. All winter long you may have seen Àocks alongside roads and out in the middle of wide open ¿elds. Come spring time getting a wild turkey must be pretty easy – right? Not so. Spring is their strut (breeding season) and the time when the large winter Àocks break up and disperse across the landscape. Wild turkeys are a challenge to hunt because they are hard to ¿nd and dif¿cult to get close too. They are not super smart – it’s just that they are scared of everything. However, pursuing a wild turkey is one of the most fun hunting opportunities available in the Kootenays. The wild turkey is native to North and Central America and its ancestors date back some 23 million years. The wild turkey is comprised of two species – the common wild turkey of North America, which the domestic turkey is a descendant from, and the Oscellated wild turkey of Central America. The Merriam’s wild turkey is one of the ¿ve recognized subspecies and it has established a self-sustaining population in the East Kootenay region over the last 30+ years. The East Kootenay region is the northern most extent of the wild turkey’s range

in North America. The Merriam’s wild turkey is classi¿ed as an introduced wildlife species in BC; however, it is not true that the government wants to eradicate wild turkeys just because of their non-native classi¿cation. Hunting seasons for wild turkey in BC are based on conservation principles that ensure the majority of breeding is completed before the Tom (male) only spring hunting season starts. Wild turkeys eat a wide variety of nuts, seeds, fruits, and Àowers, green leaves, grasshoppers, beetles, other insects and spiders. Some Àocks are considered to be “farmstead” Àocks – sustained by the habitat and food sources available on private farmland. Since the East Kootenay region has a history of wildlifeagriculture conÀicts, the East Kootenay Wild Turkey Association (EKWTA), in partnership with the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF), completed a study in 2011 that looked at the effect of wild turkey on the region’s commercial agriculture producers. The study’s key ¿ndings include: 1. Wild turkeys are not causing signi¿cant wide-spread losses to commercial agriculture producers in the East Kootenay. 2. Nearly half of the producers indicate wild turkeys provide some type of bene¿cial service. 3. Wild turkeys do not pose a risk of disease transfer to domestic

livestock. 4. There is a general interest and tolerance among agriculture producers regarding wild turkeys as long as damages do not exceed current levels. 5. 75% of producers reported that allowing hunting on their private land is the main action taken to reduce negative effects caused by wild turkeys. Unlike their domestic counter parts, wild turkey is totally organic and as free ranging as you can get! Wild turkey breast meat is as tasty and as tender as domestic turkey meat; however, because they work hard for a living, their drumsticks and dark meat are tougher – if cooked improperly. The trick is to use a slow cooker for the dark meat. • Turkey meat contains trace minerals that can help prevent cancer. • Turkey meat contains amino acid tryptophan which is essential for T cells, a type of immune system cell that kills cancer cells. • Besides, not having growth hormones, antibiotics or other chemicals, wild turkey meat is higher in percent protein, has a lower fat content and less cholesterol and is higher in calories than domestic turkey meat. Enjoy the spring turkey season and take a kid turkey hunting. Join the East Kootenay Wild Turkey Federation on Facebook. For more information contact: Mark Hall, EKWTA Field Program Coordinator. Email: markhall@xplornet. ca for information and facts about wild turkeys in BC.

Canadians and volunteering by the numbers According to the Canadian Survey of Giving, Volunteering & Participating, 95 per cent of Canadians engage in at least one form of social support. More than 12 million Canadians volunteer their time to charitable and not-for-pro¿t organizations. (Canadian Survey of Giving, Volunteering & Participating, 2007) Canadian volunteers give 2.1 billion hours annually, which is equivalent to about 1.1 million full-time jobs. The approximate number of charitable and notfor-pro¿t organizations in Canada is 161,000. More than 7 per cent of the population are ‘uber volunteers’ -- this single group contributes nearly 80 per cent of the total volunteer hours tallied. Fifty-four per cent of all non-pro¿t and charitable organizations have no paid staff. Seventy-three per cent of businesses either support or accommodate employee volunteering. The number of volunteer centres in Canada is around 200. They are the local leaders of volunteerism responding to the needs of local volunteers and volunteerinvolving organizations. The top three reasons why Canadians volunteer are: 1) To make a contribution to their community; 2) The desire to make use of personal skills and experiences; 3) Having been personally affected by the cause. Volunteering can help build self-esteem, develop life-long skills, strengthen community, and improve health. Harvard University research shows volunteering is a reÀection of social connectedness that is strongly associated with the health of people in that community. Children and youth are more likely to become engaged citizens if they see someone they admire helping others, including their parents. Adding to the excitement is a new multi-year agreement which expands the annual National Volunteer Week campaign to a year-round effort – delivered in partnership with Investors Group, longstanding supporter

of NVW and Canada’s corporate leader in volunteer recognition. “Volunteers are fundamental to the health of our communities nationwide because they support us and everything we do, said Ruth MacKenzie, President and CEO of Volunteer Canada. An open concept kitchen, dining and great room is made bright by the many windows and vaulted ceiling above. A raised eating bar and plenty of cabinets and counter space make the kitchen very functional. One of Delta’s newest faucets called the ‘Tommy’ is showcased throughout all bathrooms, the kitchen and at the basement bar. The bright chrome ¿nish and sleek modern lines lend well to the fun, nautical theme of the home. Another innovative product used in the show home is the new ‘Smart’ baseboard heaters by Dimplex. They are smaller, quieter and heat 40% faster than conventional baseboard heaters. A

Aboriginal companies put environment first in business plan

Silverberry is just one of the native plants grown at the Tipi Mountain Native Plant Nursery. Tipi Mountain Native Plant Nursery From its humble beginnings in 2008 following the purchase of the assets of the failed Aqam Native Plant Nursery, Tipi Mountain Native Plants (TMNP) has evolved into one of British Columbia’s foremost native plant nurseries. TMNP is co-owned by Robert Williams, Ktunaxa Nation and Michael Keefer and employs up to 12 people seasonally. The company proudly propagates, and cultivates, local plant species used in many ecological restoration programs through-out the region. The company originally started as a dream of the

Ktunaxa Elders and Michael Keefer to replant industrially disturbed areas with native plants. They knew that areas restored with native vegetation would be easier on the soil, be ecologically healthier for local wildlife, and be less susceptible to invasive weeds taking hold. Since its incorporation in 2008, Tipi Mountain Native Plants has experienced a substantial period of growth and now has 6230 m2 (24,000 sq/ ft) of greenhouses. This growth is due to an evolution in human thinking in which many now believe disturbed terrain should be returned to ecologically correct en-

vironments with native species through ecological restoration. Over the last couple years, over 80 different native plant species have been grown by the business. Clients of TMNP include Teck Coal, BC Hydro, City of Cranbrook and Fernie as well as many others. Native plants are ideal for use in a wide variety of landscapes, including mines, residential and commercial landscapes and in all wild ecosystems. In the urban landscape native plants, when planted in the correct sites are ideal, as they don’t require chemical inputs, are drought resistant, and they attract bene¿cial insects and

birds. For example, certain native grasses grow more slowly and need less water, making them an excellent alternative for urban lawns. Society’s environmental values are rapidly changing towards a more balanced ecosystem. People are increasingly demanding that vegetation in their local landscapes and post-industrial sites that is ecologically, and environmentally sound; and the company is proud to service this ever-expanding market. Ktunaxa elder Robert Williams and his team strive to carry on the original vision. They realize that plants are an integral part of all things living, and they are honored to be a part of many restoration developments. The company often has surpluses, but if enough advance notice is provided they can do custom collections and propagation. From custom seed and cutting harvesting, reproduction to sowing, for undertakings big or small; Tipi Mountain Native Plants would be pleased to help you with your next endeavor. For more information on the nursery please call 250-4277010 or email info@ tipimountain.com.

2012 NISSAN ROGUE S FWD

Obituaries OBITUARY

Greg Gregory James Marunchak May 30, 1950-March 24, 2012 It is with great sadness that the family says farewell to our son, brother, uncle, cousin & friend. Greg was born May 3, 1950 in Creston, BC. When he was 4 years old, the family moved to Cranbrook where Greg resided for the rest of his life. He worked for the Dept. of Highways so many of his summers were spent in other parts of BC but come fall, he always returned to his hometown. Greg enjoyed sports. As a youngster, many a summer day was spent playing pickup ball in the spare lot next to the family home. Then came football and hockey. It was a very versatile lot. He also enjoyed golf (most of the time) and being out on the links with Badge and the boys. Greg was a kind and gentle man with a very big heart who would do anything for family and friends. He loved to talk and laugh. Thus the nickname "Chuckles." To his dad he was always "Little Nick." He loved his niece Jody and would have given her the world if he could have. He was generous to a fault. His great nieces and nephew held a special place in his heart. Young Madisyn was a shining star in his last two years. She made him laugh as only the young can. Greg is survived by his dad John, sister Marianne, niece Jody and her daughter Madisyn, brother John Jr. and his daughter Becky and her three sons, brother Dave (Brenda), niece Natalie (Justin) Vance and their children Carver and Dayvia, niece Cassidy (Scot) and many cousins and friends. Greg was predeceased by his mother Rose, nephew Frazer and both sets of grandparents. Rest in peace Greg. You were a gooder and will be missed! A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, April 28, Apollo Ristorante, 1-4 pm. Donations may be made to Cranbrook Minor Ball or a charity of your choice. Cars - Sports & Imports
