AGEING AND HEALTH Every year the World Health Organization (WHO) organizes World Health Day. This year’s event will be held on April 7 with “Ageing and Health” as the theme. Over the last 100 years life expectancy has increased dramatically and Earth’s population will soon include more seniors than children. Even though populations are ageing quickly everywhere in the world, the most rapid changes will be seen in developing nations. These social transformations will have important consequences on our future and action must be taken now. If nothing is done soon, some countries will probably not have enough time within one generation to adequately prepare their health and social systems for this demographic shift.
Life expectancy has increased in spectacular fashion over the last century.
Every year since its creation, the WHO coordinates problem solving on important questions linked to international public health. This is why the WHO encourages people of all ages and all spheres — whether they be politicians, planners, members of the public, patients, doctors, pharmacists, pharmaceutical distributors, or manufacturers — to organize events which will shine the spotlight on vital questions concerning the health and well-being of us all. By encouraging communities around the world to unite in the cause, this thematic day is an endorsement of measures that will contribute to the improvement of everyone’s health.

The BC new housing HST rebate threshold increases to $850,000 effective April 1st. Purchasers of a new home as a primary residence are eligible for a rebate of the provincial portion of HST up to $42,500 based on the higher threshold. As always, HST does not apply to resale housing. Purchasers of new secondary vacation or recreational homes outside the Greater Vancouver and Capital regional districts are also eligible to claim the provincial grant up to $42,500. This is a very positive change for our recreational real estate market here in the East Kootenay and secondary home buyers are already responding favorably. A new BC Seniors Home Renovation Tax Credit of up to $1,000 annually is now available to help those aged 65 and over with the cost of permanent home renovations that will increase their independence and allow them to remain in their homes longer. The credit can be claimed by seniors, whether they own their home or rent, and by individuals who share a home with a senior relative.

Services offered by New Energy Wellness, inspired by owner Allison Wager, include Yoga, Raindrop massage, therapeutic & relaxation massages, nutritional counseling, body cleanse programs and infrared sauna treatments. New this Spring is more yoga classes, including Power Yoga 4 Men and Boomeri¿c Yoga. Also new this spring: Crystal Reiki, Angel Card readings and Amethyst Bio-Mat treatments. The Amethyst Bio-Mat is a medical-grade infrared heating mat used in healing practices all over the world. It combines far infrared light and negative ion technology with the healing
properties of Amethyst crystals. It is similar to an infrared sauna treatment using far infrared light. Far infrared light is light that is below the visible part of the spectrum. It penetrates several inches into most objects, transferring heat very ef¿ciently. It is why sunlight feels warm. In comparison, heat transferred merely by conduction (a.k.a. contact) or convection (a.k.a air Àow) does not heat an object deeply, or evenly throughout. The Bio mat adds technology of negative ions and amethyst crystal. Negative Ions: These are particles in the air that have an extra electron. They are signi¿cant because bodies can be damaged by oxidative stress (a.k.a. free radicals), but breathing these free electrons neutralizes oxidizing compounds. Negative ions are an an-

ti-oxidant and also help increase the alkalinity of your body’s pH. You may notice bene¿ts of mood and alertness as well, due to increased serotonin levels and improved cell metabolism. Amethyst: This material was chosen primarily because it converts heat energy into far infrared light very ef¿ciently, due to its crystalline structure. But its’ long use in the spiritual healing ¿eld, across different cultures, suggests it may have some more mysterious bene¿ts as well. The Bio-Mat and the Infrared Sauna are both designed to emit light at wavelengths that have healing properties. When heated, it emits light at 8 and 12 microns of wavelength. This light, on the far infrared side of the spectrum, penetrates deeply into tissues, increases circulation and metabolism, and relieves pain directly. Cells are able to absorb more oxygen, export more acidic wastes, and repair themselves faster when metabolism is higher. The healing tools have been found to bene¿t the treatment of chronic pain conditions, as well as autoimmune condi-

Bust a move for a good cause
Gregarious Gardener
Submitted Physical activity has been shown to increase mental creativity and the minds behind the latest fundraising initiative for A Clear View have deÂżnitely been creative. Bring on Spring fever by gathering up the family, digging out your dancing shoes and coming out to a Bust a Move Dance event in support of the A Clear View ~ digital mammography campaign. This creative fundraiser comes in support of East Kootenay Foundation for Health from Kimberley’s Marlana Realini and her organizing team. It is Marlana’s role as the assistant to general surgeons Dr. Abdul Aleem and Dr. Peter Chong that inspired her to get involved. Marlana explains, “In my work life, I have a close connection to many individuals who have received a breast cancer diagnosis. I coordinate the appointments for surgical biopsies with these talented surgeons. In hearing many of the patients’ stories it encouraged me personally to reach out and create something that would help raise donations to bring this equipment to the regional hospital.â€? On April 14 from noon to 4 p.m. the McKim School Gym (Kimberley) will host the Bust A Move Dance; a fun for the whole family event which includes dancing to various decades of DJ music accompanied by the arrival of special guests from the Kimberley Dynamiters, the Northstar Figure Skaters and the Kimberley Dance Academy. You can also participate in an energizing one-hour Zumba class with certiÂżed Zumba instructor Sue Inshaw. Admission is by donation and attendees are encouraged to bring lots of loonies for prize and 50/50 draws. So if the winter cobwebs need dusting off and the family feels like trying the shimmy shimmy shake (yes, we just dated ourselves) the Bust a Move Dance is for you. All proceeds go toward the 2-year, $1 million fundraising goal to bring a digital
stereotactic mammography unit to the East Kootenay Regional Hospital. For more information contact Marlana Realini, Event Coordinator at 250.427-9812. The

Now is the time to look at your soil and possibly add nutrients to create the perfect conditions for the upcoming growing season. But how do you know what to add and what your soil has already? Testing your soil is the answer. A simple soil test can tell you if your soil has an excess or deďŹ ciency of Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium. These nutrients play a vital role in plant growth, similar to the importance vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates and protein have in our health. It can also tell you the pH level of your soil. The level of alkalinity (sweet) or acidity (sour) controls how well plants are able to absorb the nutrients in the soil. It is especially recommended to test before planting in the spring and when preparing beds in the fall. If at any time, however, you feel your plants are not growing well, test your soil before just adding something and hoping for the best. Adding the wrong fertilizer or amendment can actually do your soil and plants more harm than good. Simple soil test kits can be purchased at your local garden center and are relatively easy and fun to use. All you have to do essentially is add a small amount of your soil to distilled water along with the test kit additives, put them into the test tube and shake well. You then compare the colour your water turns to the colour on a provided chart. This will give you quite accurate readings and will make you much more informed as to what would be the proper soil amendment or fertilizer to choose. You will want to take a few different test samples from different areas of your garden to get an overall accurate reading. As good as these colour comparative tests are, some people want an even more developed soil test. For that, we can send a larger soil sample away to a lab for testing. Although this is considerably more expensive, lab tested soil will give you more information than just the levels of Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium and the soil’s pH level. It will also indicate salt levels, the amount of organic matter and micro-nutrients available as well as suggest the amounts of Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium that need to be added to bring your soil up to optimum growing conditions. Once you know what’s in your soil and what is lacking, it will make it easier to decide what fertilizer or amendment your garden may or may not need. If, for example, your soil is high in Nitrogen, you will look for a fertilizer that had little or no Nitrogen in it. If you did not know the Nitrogen levels in your soil and added a high Nitrogen fertilizer you could do great damage to both your plants and your soil. So before you start your growing, make sure the soil in your garden has the perfect growing conditions. Come see the friendly staff at Top Crop if you have more questions. Till next time... happy gardening. Submitted by Margaret

Cougar warning Parks Canada has issued a warning for three trails in the Radium Hot Springs area in Kootenay National Park due to recent cougar activity. The warning is for the Redstreak Campground Trail, Juniper Trail, and
Sinclair Canyon Trail. People are advised to use special caution when travelling in this area. On Monday, March 18, a cougar attacked a sheep on the cliffs above Sinclair Canyon along Highway 93 South.
Both animals fell to the ground below. The cougar ran off. The sheep sustained a broken leg, and head and neck injuries as a result of the encounter. A Parks Canada Resource Conservation Of¿cer who responded to the incident put the sheep down because of its injuries and disposed of the carcass.
On Saturday, March 24, Parks Canada responded to another incident in the same area. Members of the public observed a cougar kill an adult female sheep in the small parking lot east of Sinclair Canyon. A Resource Conservation Of¿cer removed the sheep carcass. The next day, the of¿cer found another
fresh kill of a sheep near the parking lot. To date, the cougar has shown no aggression towards humans. Parks Canada will continue to monitor the area for cougar activity. Cougars, while rarely seen, are constant residents in Kootenay National Park and generally avoid people. To avoid cougar encoun-
ters, travel in groups and keep everyone together including children and dogs, walk your dog on a leash, make noise to alert cougars of your presence and leave the area if you see or smell a dead animal. If you do encounter a cougar, immediately pick up children and pets, do not run or turn your back on
a cougar, maintain eye contact, make yourself appear as large as possible, back away slowly, and always leave room for the animal to escape. If attacked, ¿ght back and use bear spray. Report all cougar sightings to Banff Dispatch at 403.762.1470.

Columbia Basin Trust (CBT) is helping Basin communities continue to address literacy issues by renewing its partnership with the Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy (CBAL). CBT is committing $1.32 million over three years, or $440,000 per year. This is an increase of 10 per cent over the previous
partnership agreement of $400,000 per year, and is a response to increased demands for CBAL’s programs. “CBT wants to support communities in setting and addressing their own literacy priorities,” said Neil Muth, CBT President and CEO. “Given CBAL’s demonstrated track re-
cord and the increased demand for the services it provides, we’re excited we can both renew our partnership and increase our support.” CBAL works by assisting communities as they tackle their individual literacy needs. Results include programs and resources focused on topics like reading, PHOTO SUBMITTED

Garry Anderson, Executive Director of the Cranbrook Archives, Museum and Landmark (“CAMALâ€?) Foundation, which includes the Canadian Museum of Rail Travel, was recently notiÂżed that he will receive the “Award of Distinguished Serviceâ€? from the Canadian Museums Association (CMA) for 2012. The letter to Garry from John McAvity, Executive Director of the Canadian Museums Association, stated, “This award is for individuals who have made a distictive contribution to the museum community. The jury of peers, which received your nomination from some secret friends, admirers and peers, was very impressed with your committment and dedication throughout the yearsâ€?. The increasing recognition of the unique railcar collection to be of national and international importance was probably also a factor. Along with his Order of Canada in 2007, this award stands as one of two major highlights of his 36-year career. Corinne, Friesen, the new Board Chair sums it up: “This is wonderful news for Garry, for the Museum’s Board of Directors and for Cranbrook, so I hope people realize this is a very prestigious national award. It speaks volumes about his contribution to museums in general with his specialized knowledge of perserving large artifacts which are not able to be protected in glass cases as in normal museums. It also speaks to his enormous contribution to our community for without him there would be no museum. He started it and has worked with well over 100 Board members all along, in addition to his involvement in national, provincial, regional and local organizations and committeesâ€?. This is a major award given annually by the CMA representing museums across Canada. It will be presented to Mr. Anderson at the CMA Annual Conference in Ottawa from April 24 27, with the actual presentation taking place at the Banquet on Wed. April 25.

A cougar chases a deer. The cougar takes two leaps for every three which the deer takes. Each leap which the cougar takes covers as much ground as two of the deer’s leaps. If, at the beginning of the chase, the deer was twenty of its leaps ahead of the cougar, how many leaps will the deer take before the cougar catches it?

Over the last 22 years, ICBC’s road improvement program has evolved signi¿cantly – community investments and successful partnerships have led to award winning projects and the contributions have helped advance the knowledge of the road safety engineering industry in B.C. and across Canada. In Memoriam IN MEMORY William Andres Jan.18 1941-April 4 2011 Little did we know that morning God was going to call your name. In life we loved you dearly, in death we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you, but you did not go alone. For part of us went with you, the day God called you home. You left us peaceful memories, your love is still our guide. And though we cannot see you, you are always by our side. Our family chain is broken and nothing seems the same. But as God calls us one by one, the chain will link again. Sadly Missed, Lovingly Remembered Your Loving Family.

Every moment of every day she is with us. In the sweet smell of spring when the world is fresh from the rain, when the ¿rst robin sings, in the quiet of the night, in laughter & in tears. Whenever we need her she is there, with a love as deep as the ocean she loved & a faith that could move mountains. We carry her with us & so she lives on as we attempt to pay forward all the gifts that she gave & continues to give even to this day. We are blessed to have been part of her life.
