On Monday, April 2nd, 2012, at approximately 4:15 p.m., the Elk Valley RCMP responded to a motor vehicle accident

near Lake Koocanusa approximately 75 kms south west of Fernie, British Columbia. Police investigation

has revealed that two motocross bikes had collided head on with one of the riders succumbing to his injuries and dying at the scene of the accident. The group of individuals was from Alberta and were in the area riding motocross bikes on some of the

back country trails. The investigation has further revealed that both riders were ascending up opposite sides of the same hill and collided upon

reaching the top. All riders were experienced in the operation of motocross bikes and all were wearing protective riding gear. The

cess to the trough room and the pond building to view the different species of ¿sh before they leave the hatchery for their designated lakes. The hatchery has a renowned ¿shing pond that allows children an opportunity to try their luck at catching and releasing a trout. Children may bring their own rods and ¿shing gear, however only single barbless hooks are permitted. For those interested in some of the ¿sh culture educational aspects of the open house, staff will be on hand to answer your questions regarding the rearing of ¿sh. An incubation display will show the life cycle of a ¿sh from the egg stage to the newly hatched fry. Staff will also provide spawning and ¿n clipping demonstrations and a transportation tank truck will be on display to show how ¿sh are transported. Columbia Basin Trust - a strong supporter of our Outreach Programs and the Open House will also have a booth at the event this year. The Outreach Program staff will be promoting our ¿shing and educational programs, which focus on conservation and stewardship of BC’s natural resources. In addition, there will be some new and exciting promo items for sale to the public this year, including ¿sh and turtle pendants, and Freshwater Fisheries Society caps. Proceeds from these sales will go back to the FFSBC educational programs. The Columbia and Kootenai Sturgeon Programs, respectively funded by BC Hydro and the Kootenai Tribe of Idaho, are a large part of the overall program. Angus Glass from the Upper Columbia White Sturgeon Recovery Initiative and Society staff will be on hand to discuss both of these sturgeon recovery initiatives and you will be able to view some of these ¿sh up close and see where they are being cultured. Fisheries biologists and Conservation Of¿cers from the Ministry of Forest Lands and Natural Resource Operations will also be available to answer your ¿sheries management and regulation

questions. Members from St.Mary’s Fly Fishing Club and Rocky Mountain Fly Fishing Club will demonstrate their well-honed Ày tying skills and give as-

A rising trend for good food La Dolce Vita By Lorne Eckersley

A few weeks ago I wrote about making pizza using a no-knead dough recipe from New York baker Jim Lahey (no relation to the ¿ctitious security guy on Trailer Park Boys). It reminded me that I had read about his same approach to making loaves of bread in a New York Times story in 2006. Not wanting to let the idea slip away for another six years, I dove in and began experimenting, adjusting the recipe and using different pans. The recipe itself is ridiculously simply. To 3 cups of Àour add 1 ¼ tsp. salt and ¼ tsp. of regular yeast. Mix them together and add about 1 2/3 cups of water, enough so that a moist dough can be roughly mixed into a ball. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let sit for 24 hours (though up to 72 hours is ¿ne). Turn what should be a bubbly, gloppy mess out onto a Àoured board and sprinkle the dough with a bit more Àour. Push the air out of the dough with a few pushes and turns, then form it into a ball (I used a dough scraper to make the process easier), cover with a Àoured cloth and let rest for two hours. At least a half hour before baking, preheat the oven to 500 degrees and place in it your large baking container of choice. Lahey says enameled cast

iron ware, pyrex and ceramic containers are all ¿ne, as long as they have a ¿tted lid. When the oven reaches temperature, pull out the pot, remove the lid and carefully drop in the dough, seam-side down. Replace the lid, return the pot to the oven and bake for 30 minutes, then remove the lid and continue baking for 2030 minutes, until the internal temperature of the loaf is about 200 degrees F. The result is a beautifully browned, crunchy crusted bread with a chewy exterior. The covered container (needs to hold about 6 quarts) and high oven temperatures are key. Inside the container, the dough’s moisture is trapped and it works to form the crust. I made my very ¿rst dough, then went to pre-heat the oven and discovered that I didn’t have the large container and lid I thought I had. So I cut the dough in half and put one Pyrex casserole dish and a 3-quart enameled cast iron pot into the oven. Because the loaves were smaller, I reduced the cooking time by about a third and the results were perfect. Some more reading revealed that some bakers use the stainless steel cookware. I also wanted to experiment with terracotta, so I splurged and bought a plain $6 pot. I mixed another batch of dough and used it, putting a round of parchment paper in the bottom to cover the

drain hole and covering the top with tin foil once the dough was dropped in. The loaf was beautifully shaped and cooked and that particular experiment was a success. Over the next few days I continued, usually mixing one batch in the morning and another in the evening. I used different combinations of Àour, including local whole wheat and hard spring wheat, added rolled oats and even chopped dates and walnuts. I made loaves in the plant pot and in my large stainless steel pots, and did some by putting the dough on parchment paper on a cookie tray and putting on a stainless steel pot or the terracotta planter upside down for a cover. Invariably, the results were edible and attractive. This is a recipe that is very hard to go wrong with. Follow the instructions for ingredients fairly closely and then make sure to use the hot oven and cover the loaf—other variables seem to work ¿ne. Personally, I am quite happy to make bread in the traditional way, but I’ll admit that the lack of work is a great appeal in the no-knead process. My guess is that I will use it more often. If you are a bread machine user, I challenge you to try the no-knead process and see just how different the results are.

Invasive species threat by Marty Hafke On April 17 the East Kootenay Invasive Plant Council will be hosting its 4th annual AGM and Speaker Series “Our Changing Ecosystems”. As residents and visitors to this region are well aware, the East Kootenay is home to some of the most spectacular landscapes anywhere on the planet. These landscapes house an intricate web of Àora and fauna that form multiple interconnected ecosystems, from the world renowned Columbia Wetlands to the spectacular grasslands of the Rocky Mountain Trench to the old growth forests of the Elk Valley, these diverse ecosystems have evolved over millennia and provide this region with a strong economic and cultural backbone. Healthy, resilient ecosystems are often characterized by an abundance of diversity, yet ne of the biggest threats to ecosystem diversity is the introduction and spread of invasive species. These introduced species have the ability to reproduce rapidly and out-compete native species while largely existing free from predation and disease. As habitat is lost to these introduced species, native species may become rare, endangered or even extirpated. As species are lost, ecosystems become less diverse and thus less resilient. In some cases invasive species can completely wipe out entire ecosystems, replacing them with virtual monocultures. The East Kootenay Invasive Plant Council (EKIPC) will be exploring this and other ideas related to “Our Changing Ecosystems” at our Annual Speaker Series and AGM on April 17 at the Prestige Inn in Cranbrook. We have secured an exciting lineup of speakers to discuss ecosystem change from a number of different perspectives. Kelly Cooley, the Southern Alberta Weed Coordinator, will kick things off with his insightful and entertaining perspective on invasive species and ecosystem change. The renowned and respected Thomas Woolf (Aquatic Plant Program Manager for the Idaho State Department of Agriculture) will then present on his experiences with aquatic invasive species in Idaho and the threat that is posed to the East Kootenay if any

of these species are ever introduced here. Michael Keefer (Keefer Ecological Services Inc.) will be

presenting on plant and grass species used in reclamation and how they are changing our native ecosystems. We are also very lucky to have Lesley Tannen, the Execu-

tive Director of the BC Landscape and Nursery Association present on the horticulture industry and the new and updated “Grow Me Instead” publication that

will be available for the ¿rst time at the AGM. EKIPC Coordinator, Marty Hafke will wrap things up with a presentation on EKIPC’s exciting projects for 2012 as

Bolder lines and a huge 580-horsepower engine with the ability to shut down cylinders to save on fuel, the designers behind the 2012 Camaro have outdone themselves Overall: Finally winning the pony-car sales war over the Ford Mustang, but Chevrolet is keeping its foot to the Àoor with new powertrains, interior tweaks and the giantkilling ZL1. Drivetrain: The base LS and LT are motivated by an updated 3.6-litre V6 that now puts out 323 horsepower (take that, Mustang); the mid-range SS gets a 6.2-litre V8 with 426 horsepower; ultra-powerful ZL1 gets a 580-horsepower version of the Corvette ZR1’s engine. After a hugely successful introduction of a convertible for the 2011 model year, the Chevrolet Camaro returns in 2012 to play a little game of one-upmanship with the revised Ford Mustang. The base LS and LT are now motivated by an upgraded and lighter 323-horsepower (up from 312) 3.6-litre V6 ¿tted with either a six-speed manual transmission or optional six-speed automatic.

The small bump is actually a sharp punch to the jaw of the Mustang and its base 305-horsepower 3.7-litre V6. Conversely, Ford came out with a new 412-horsepower 5.0-litre V8 to go toe-to-toe with the Camaro SS and its 6.2-litre V8 that makes 426 horsepower with the sixspeed manual transmission, or 400 with the six-speed automatic. The latter combo is equipped with a fuel-saving feature that shuts down half of its eight cylinders when coasting or under light load. SS models add bee¿er Brembo-brand brakes, lowered ride height, sport suspension, exclusive 20-inch wheels (18- and 19-inchers are standard) and a performance mode setting for the traction and stability control systems, which are vital to preventing this rear-drive machine from becoming too tail happy. Since the best Mustang is offered with a 550-horsepower supercharged V8, Chevrolet

¿nally counters with a ZL1 Camaro - in coupe and convertible models - that features a version of the 638-horsepower supercharged Corvette ZR1 engine, detuned slightly to 580 horsepower. While the Camaro’s general shape is retro-inspired, the lines on the ZL1 are bolder with more modern cues. It features a wide-front grille Àanked by four fog lights, and a carbon-¿ber hood vent. To handle all that power and torque, the ultimate Camaro gets the same Magnetic Ride Control found in the Corvette and CTS-V, and the clutch in the six-speed manual transmission is suitably beefed up (the six-speed automatic will remain an option). Also new for 2012 is the steering wheel, a more aggressive suspension package for the SS Coupe and a standard rear spoiler on all models.

You already know you are getting a whole lot of power with the Ford Mustang, but the 2012 version allows you to ¿ne-tune the vehicle to suit each individual driver. Overall: After debuting allnew V6 and V8 engines that allowed the Mustang to keep pace with its Chevrolet and Dodge rivals, Ford unleashes the track-oriented Boss 302 for 2012 just to keep them guessing. Drivetrain: Base 3.7-litre V8 now with 305 horsepower and 5.0-litre V8 in the GT with 412 horsepower on tap; Boss 302 uses 444-horse 5.0. Ford is slowly turning the Mustang into the pony-car version of the Porsche 911. The mid-range 412-horsepower V8-powered GT is like the plain Carrera: simple and effective. The Shelby GT500 is a forced-induction, 550-horsepower cruise missile, like the 911 Turbo. The new-for-2012 Boss 302 is like

the 911 GT3: it sits midway between the previous two, but is shocking in both its speed and its ability to carve up a road. The Boss gets the usual power upgrades with the 5.0 spinning up to 7,400 rpm to deliver 444 horsepower, while torque-sensing limited-slip differential and Recaro front seats are options. In a unique throw to the original Boss, every owner can adjust the suspension settings and shock adjustments with a screwdriver. To ¿nish off the package, there are aggressive body pieces, a freebreathing exhaust and unique 19-inch wheels with stickier rubber. If that’s not enough, you can also step into a Boss 302 Laguna Seca package, which is like the 911 GT3 RS: more raw, with a deleted

rear seat and cross-car bracing in its place. It also comes with R-compound tires, a lower front splitter (air dam), and a functional rear spoiler. It’s essentially a track-ready car delivered right from the factory. Pricing hits nearly dead center too: a GT starts at $35,200, with the Boss at $48,200, capped by the Shelby at $59,000. Regular Mustangs are still glowing from the additional improvements made in 2011 with added sound insulation on all models, a fun 305-horsepower V6 in base models, and an optional Brembo-brand brake package for the GT that originates from the Mustangbased Shelby GT500.

Theft of Chainsaws On 2 January, 2012, at 12:55 hrs, a report was received by the Cranbrook RCMP about the theft of thirteen chainsaws from a storage area at Purcell Resources, in the 300 block of Industrial Rd G. An employee had just noticed the theft that morning when he checked the storage area and noticed all the chainsaws were missing. Of the thirteen Husqavarna chainsaws that were stolen, nine had not been used previously. A bolt cutter was used to break the security chain. Total cost of stolen saws that were taken is approximately $11,900.
