Weekly Features Want More Energy? Vitality? Better Health? Total Body Cleansing Is What You Need For Great Health. If there was only one thing you could do to improve your health and increase your energy it would be total body cleanse. Everyday your body is under attack from pollution, pesticides, chemicals and toxins. They are in the food we eat, the water we drink, and the air we breathe. No matter your lifestyle, no one is escaping this constant barrage of toxins.
First Cleanse - Your First Step Towards Better Health First Cleanse is a unique, 15 day herbal cleanse, formulated specifically for the ‘first time’ or ‘sensitive’ cleanser. It is designed to stimulate the cleansing and detoxification process of the body’s 7 channels of elimination. First Cleanse is strong enough to be effective, yet gentle enough that it will not cause mild headaches or nausea that can result from detoxifying too quickly. First Cleanse is a two part cleanse. Part 1 is a herbal organ detox formula. Part 2 is a gentle colon cleansing formula.

An important aspect of cleansing is to ensure that fibre intake is at an optimal level (30-40 grams per day). Fibre absorbs toxins and brings them to the colon for elimination. It is recommended that you use FibreSMART as directed on the label as part of your cleansing program. FibreSMART is a flax based fibre formula that provides the recommended ratio of 50% soluble fibre and 50% insoluble fibre. Soluble fibre works by absorbing toxins and has an action much like a sponge, soaking up material as it passes. Insoluble fibre removes toxins by ‘scraping’ them off the intestinal wall as it passes through the digestive tract. Insoluble fibre also strengthens the bowel by creating resistance that the muscles of the colon have to work against.

CleanseSMART is an advanced cleansing and detoxification program. This two-part cleanse is also designed to stimulate the body’s seven channels of elimination but it is 4-5 time stronger than First Cleanse and more effective at eliminating constipation and improving bowel function. Part 1 contains herbs that help eliminate toxins from the organs, tissues , and blood stream. Part 2 works to enhance elimination from the colon by using magnesium hydroxide to hydrate the colon. Herbs such as cape aloe, rhubarb, and triphala work to stimulate peristalsis, which is the colon’s natural action of pushing out material.

bees in the East Kootenays and beyond. Queen of the Sun follows the voices and visions of beekeepers, philosophers and scientists from around the world providing an indepth investigation of the causes and solutions to the honeybee population collapse. The ¿lm is unique in that it emphasizes the biodynamic and organic community’s perspective and insights into the long-term issues that have brought about the recent honeybee collapse. In the end Queen of the Sun is an uplifting documentary ¿nding practical solutions and discovering the deep link between bee’s survival and our own. Lance Cuthill, Cranbrook based Ministry of Agriculture Bee Inspector will introduce the Cranbrook screening of Queen of The Sun. “We have had dramatic bee losses here in BC and in the Kootenays and my hope is that as our community becomes aware of the situation with our pollinators more people will take up beekeeping,” said Cuthill. John Bergenske, an East Kootenay commercial beekeeper for the past 35 years, will introduce the Kimberley screening. John was president of the BC Honey Producers’ Association in the 1980’s, during a period when Canada’s beekeepers were increasingly threatened with the spread of bee pest infestations. Besides being the human face behind Rocky Mountain Honey, Bergenske is well known as Wildsight’s Executive Director. “Honey bees are an indicator of ecosystem health across the globe and escalating bees losses in British Columbia over the past decade are symptomatic of the changing face of agriculture world-wide,” said Bergenske. Queen of The Sun will screen in Cranbrook on Wednesday April 4 at 7:30 p.m. at the College of the Rockies Lecture Theatre and in Kimberley on Thursday April 12 at 7 p.m. at Centre 64. Admission is by donation. For more information contact Wildsight at 250-427-2535 or view the ¿lm trailer at www.queenofthesun. com.

Another winery in the mix La Dolce Vita By Lorne Eckersley
Last week we spent a few hours at what is about to become the Creston Valley’s third winery. As we drove home, I thought about how much fun it has been to watch the development of the wine industry in what 20 years ago was generally considered to be an inhospitable climate for vinifera and even some hybrid grape varieties. Then, six years ago (has it really been that long) Al and Marleen Hoag opened the doors to Skimmerhorn Winery and Vineyard. The long-time orchard operators had seen the writing on the wall for the traditional fruit industry and, coming across what they believed to be a perfect location to grow grapes, they made the move into the wine business. A couple of other canny decisions— hiring New Zealand winemaker Mark Rattray and opening a bistro to add another draw for visitors—helped the new endeavour to succeed. Four years later a neighbouring vineyard was also producing and Baillie-Grohman Estate Winery opened its doors. Committed to using only vinifera grapes and intensive vineyard management, owners Bob Johnson and Petra Flaa hired another Kiwi. Dan Barker was not so long ago named New Zealand’s young winemaker of the year and he has proven to be a perfect match for what Johnson and Flaa dreamed of accomplishing. One doesn’t have to
sift through many wine and food publications in Canada before the Baillie-Grohman name starts to pop up. Wynnwood Estate Winery, set to open its doors to the public on a 12-acre parcel just north of Wynndel on Highway 3A has established itself as unique by locating its vineyard on a limestone rock-covered slope that drops down to Duck Lake. With slightly warmer temperatures than the vineyard in Erickson and the advantage of water that reÀects the late afternoon sun onto the vines, the vineyard is already producing Merlot grapes, a rare red vinifera other than Pinot Noir in this area. The vineyard was the result of a happy coincidence. Michael Wigen, whose family owns Wynndel Box and Lumber Ltd. sawmill, and who has a deep interest in ¿ne wines, had been Àying a potential investor around the Valley as he looked for a likely vineyard location. A short time afterward, then-Canyon resident Dave Basaraba, who shares Wigen’s wine passion, told Michael that he thought there was an ideal spot for a vineyard to the north of Duck Lake. Basaraba described the location and Wigen replied, “You’ve got to be kidding. I think we (Wynndel Box and Lumber) own that land.” Not so long afterward, machinery was moved in and Basaraba was supervising the landscaping for what has evolved into a 10-acre vineyard with slopes and gullies that would look at home
in Italy or France. The partners made a decision not to chance a winery construction on the hillside property, not least because it would involve enormous expense. Instead, the winery and tasting room has been built on property Dave and Margaret Basaraba purchased a couple of years ago. With its direct access to Highway 3A and the many tourists that drive along toward Kootenay Lake each summer, the location looks ideal. We walked around the un¿nished building, talking about ¿nishing and landscaping, and sipped from bottle and barrel samples of wine made from the Duck Lake vineyard over the past two years. Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc have been produced in small quantities and they are all showing characteristics that belie the vineyard’s youth. Some experimenting has been done to determine the most suitable style of wine to be made from each grape and no doubt the trials will continue in the coming vintages, too. But I am convinced that there is something special unfolding at Wynnwood Estate Winery and I am excited that it will only serve to enhance the overall wine industry in the Creston Valley. At one point the conversation turned to, “Where will the fourth vineyard and winery be?” There were no ¿rm answers, but no one questioned that idea that there is more development to come in this newly emerging wine region.

Presented by Crumbs Cakery & Sandy Smith
ADVERTORIAL Reality television has never been more popular. Neither has the cupcake. Put the two together, and you have “Cupcake Wars”; the popular Food Network reality baking television show. Thanks to Crumbs Cakery, Cranbrook will be having its own Cupcake War. Crumbs Cakery and Realtor Sandy Smith with Royal LePage East
K t Kootenay Realty are holding Cranbrook’s ¿rst reality TV based baking competition: Cranbrook Cupcake Wars. Danielle Cardozo is the owner of Crumbs Cakery, who launched her business at the St. Eugene Bridal Fair in January. Since the Bridal Fair, Crumbs Cakery has experienced a steady increase of success, booking thirteen weddings for
the 20 2012 wedding season and several birthday cakes. She crea also creates 3D cakes, h most recent such as her cake, a 20 inch tall, N 3D Newfoundland Retriev dog cake. Retriever Car Cardozo, who got the idea to bring C Cupcake Wars t Cranbrook to from her 7 year old daughter, is excited about creating Cranbrook C u p c a k e W Wars. “I love th creativity I the g to express get w when I bake. My go in creating goal Cranbrook Cupc Cupcake Wars is sh to share my love for cu cupcakes! The compet competition is open hom bakers all to home over th the Kootenays. There is no minimum age, nor an age limit. I want to see everyone who has a love for baking cupcakes, show Cranbrook what they’ve got.” Sandy Smith, is proud to be a judge at the competition. What many may not know is that she has published a Canadian Bestseller cookbook, Kootenay Country Kitchens Cookbook. Having moved to the Southern Interior
from the Northwest Territories, Smith had to learn to cook a whole new style of cooking. Her cookbook celebrates local cuisine by including recipes by local residents from all over the Kootenays; such as the Kootenay immigrant contribution Doukhobor Borscht. “Because the recipes were put together by Kootenay cooks, they include all ingredients that are easily available here” explains Smith. Crumbs and Smith aren’t focused solely on cupcakes. The two have decided to charge a $10.00 entry fee for each contestant, which will be donated to the Cranbrook Relay for Life. Cardozo says it was an easy choice to pick Relay for Life, “There are two local cake artists who are each ¿ghting a battle with cancer. Relay for Life seemed like the obvious choice to show them we are thinking about them, and are rooting for them the whole way!” Crumbs and Smith have recruited Becky and Robyn, owners of MJ Floral Designs, to help judge the competition. They will contribute their extensive knowledge in the area of visual appeal. Mike Peabody and Joey
Sandberg, are the owners of The Choice Shop. They are cupcake veterans, having started their cupcake sales long before Crumbs Cakery, at Muriel Baxter School in Grade 5. Since then, they have eaten cupcakes for breakfast on a daily basis. To Cranbrook Cupcake Wars judging, they bring their awesomeness and masculinity, to provide a sense of balance to the female dominated judging table. Contestants must have their entry form and ¿rst cupcake submission in by April 15th at 5:00pm. The competition will run for ¿ve months, from April until this September. By May, the contestants will be reduced to ¿ve. Each month, one contestant will be eliminated; until the ¿nal contestant is crowned Cranbrook’s Cupcake Champion in September, receiving over $1000.00 in prizes. Bakers can ¿nd an entry form and contest rules at www. cranbrookcakes.com/ cupcake-wars They can also check out Crumbs Cakery’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ CrumbsCakeryBC

Wedding Anniversary on April 1, 2012 Love, Your Family & Friends
In Memoriam IN MEMORY William Andres Jan.18 1941-April 4 2011 Little did we know that morning God was going to call your name. In life we loved you dearly, in death we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you, but you did not go alone. For part of us went with you, the day God called you home. You left us peaceful memories, your love is still our guide. And though we cannot see you, you are always by our side. Our family chain is broken and nothing seems the same. But as God calls us one by one, the chain will link again. Sadly Missed, Lovingly Remembered Your Loving Family.
