Young cyclists learn the rules of the road BY BREANNE MASSEY Times Staff

The growing trend of riding bikes for exercise or transportation has shifted back to local children. And with the riding season in full swing, RCMP Crime Prevention Officer Gordon Sims offered children and youth a course on bike safety on Saturday in Trail. He has been working with a number of partners to teach students in primary schools how to ride bicycles safely. “We present road sense

and safety tips to all of the elementary schools kids and we’ve been doing that for the last three weeks.” While Sims visited students at school, he taught them how to read signs, use their arms to signal what their next move was going to be for drivers and, of course, look both ways. “There’s various signs and maneuvers that they have to learn,” said Sims. “It emphasizes safety tips for the upcoming season.” So far, the initiative has been successful and he’s

encouraging parents to help their children practice now that the course is over. Wendy DePellegrin took her daughter Zoe and son Jace to the event after Sims told her about the practicality of the lesson: both theory and hands-on practice. “The majority of (students) have the theory down,” he said, “it’s just a matter of getting them practicing so they can use it.” DePellegrin had seen the program before, and thought it was a great idea for her

kids. Zoe and Jace successfully passed the rigid obstacle course, and proved they could look both ways while signaling correctly. The DePellegrin children were nervous about riding through the obstacle course, but felt confident after they completed the assigned tasks and received certificates of completion for a day of hard work. “We did some of it in school,” said Jace. “But, I like this better because you don’t have to listen to the teacher.”

and Infrastructure announced it will be adding the new cameras to the DriveBC network giving motorists more opportunities to check real-time traffic, road and weather conditions as they plan their trips. For Greater Trail drivers, the Bombi Pass will now be online,

The circle won’t be unbroken at the Trail Curling Club. Last week, the club received $15,000 from the Columbia Basin Trust (CBT) through the community initiative program to complete a kitchen renovation and make the facility fully operational by installing a fire suppression system. Hanging upon a decision by Trail city council, the club was desperate for the funds, said TCC past president Sandra Stajduhar. “We never would have been able to raise that much extra,” she said. One reason is, without the fire suppression system, the club would not have been legally able to operate the kitchen at events and bonspiels, thus nullifying the principal source of revenue that is put back into the club. With the B.C. Senior Bonspiel coming in February, 2013 — and numerous other in-house bonspiels for its over 200 members — the club had high hopes council would see the merit of the project. A week ago council fielded requests from 45 groups vying for a total of $102,132 in CBT money earmarked for Trail, with $285,269 in total requests coming from community groups and non-profit organizations for the 2012/13 year. The CBT Community Initiatives Program funds activities the city deems important and supports projects that might not otherwise have been undertaken. The villages of Fruitvale, Montrose and Warfield all received $30,000 for the current year — including some previous years’ unallocated amounts — with Area A and Area B also being handed $30,000. Rossland received $44,770, with $1,490 in unallocated money, and the Beaver Valley picked up $90,000, with $2,249.86 from previous years added in.

The two asks for a club return after partner ruffs. West ruffs a spade and returns a club to partner’s ace. West gets another spade ruff and cashes the king of clubs. East gets a club ruff. At this point, declarer is known to be 3-52-3. Another spade ruff at this point will allow declarer to pitch a losing diamond. East plays the king of diamonds which dummy wins with the ace. Declarer plays a club for a discard, but East ruffs with a small heart. It does not matter what declarer does now. West will get all of its trump and will be able to exit in diamonds to avoid any endplay. East and West will get ten tricks setting the contract by four. The result: One heart doubled down four for -1100. Note: There is a bid called the SOS redouble that North should have used here. If partner opens one hearts and West doubles, a redouble implies no fit and shows 10 or more points. However, if a take-

Here South will run to clubs because spades is East’s implied suit. Can you see how two clubs will make? On May 8 at 7 p.m., I will have 15 boards of instructed duplicate. Canfor to reopen Radium Weather provides mill and invest in Canal Flats relief from flood fears KIMBERLEY

BY SALLY MACDONALD Cranbrook Townsman

A month after purchasing Tembec’s two local mills, Canfor has announced it’s spending $40 million in the East Kootenay. The investment will lead to the reopening of Canfor’s Radium mill at the end of 2012, which was closed in 2009, putting 167 people out of work. Starting next month, Canfor will spend $38.5 million on the Radium facility, creating a new planer facility, the installation of a biomass energy system, and modifications to the existing sawmill. Another $1.5 million will be spent on the Canal Flats mill to improve drying capacity. “These investments are critical to support the restart of our Radium division, which was indefinitely closed in May 2009,” said Don Kayne, Canfor President and CEO. “The fibre in the

Kootenay region is amongst the best in the world, and these investments will secure our ability to make top-quality products here to supply global markets.” The investment is just the beginning for Canfor’s improvements to its southern interior mills. The company has planned a multi-year capital investment program to enhance productivity and cost performance. In November, Tembec announced that, after 13 years, it was selling its Canal Flats and Elko sawmills, and the associated 1.1 million cubic metres of lumber and cutting rights, to Canfor for $60 million. About 455 employees were included in the transaction, with 90 of those located in the head office in Cranbrook. Tembec still owns the Skookumchuck pulp mill. Kayne toured the region last month to cement the deal. During his visit to

Cranbrook, he said: “We’ve indicated early on that we’re looking to spend 50 to 60 million dollars in capital across the East Kootenay. “We’re in a process now of evaluating where exactly among those three mills we’re going to spend the capital and how. “There’s a lot of work going into that now, so in terms of timing, we should be a lot clearer over the next 30 to 60 days.” In the meantime, B.C. sawmills have faced difficulties with fires in Burns Lake and Prince George sawmills being linked to dust from pine beetle-infected logs. Last week, WorkSafe BC ordered inspections of all B.C. sawmills, focusing on the hazards of processing dry beetle-killed logs in B.C. Interior sawmills. “There is a common factor here, and we’re all aware of it, and it’s sawdust,” said Labour Minister Margaret MacDiarmid.

Residents affected by flooding, and City officials working with them could not have asked for better weather conditions over the weekend, says Mayor Ron McRae. “The weather definitely worked in our favour,” he said. “Keeping temperatures in the low teens was very helpful as was the lack of precipitation.” The water dropped consistently through the weekend, he said, with the two ballfields now almost clear of water. Water had risen on Friday, reflooding a couple of basements on Wallinger, but since then has dropped considerably. “We still have forestry crews here, helping Morrison Sub residents with additional pumping,” McRae said. About 20 additional pumps arrived late last week to help with pumping the water out. The State of Local Emergency was expected to be lifted but McRae warned citizens to remain vigilant. “There is still water to come down. This will continue to keep everyone’s attention. “But the weather forecast is not too bad. It is supposed to remain cool, and there is some precipitation forecast, but not a lot.” The focus for the moment will now shift to assisting those affected by the flood, McRae says. “We had someone from the province in over the weekend to look at things from a disaster assistance perspective. Our focus is now on what we can do for these people.”

Crown seeks prison term in road rage incident BY MONIQUE TAMMINGA Langley Times

Two years to the day after 21-year-old Silas O’Brien was killed in a road-rage incident in South Langley, the man convicted of causing his death was caught driving 45 km/h over the posted speed limit on the same road. The shocking accusation came in New Westminster’s B.C. Supreme Court Friday, as Brent Parent, 43, sat in the prisoner’s box with his head down, while prosecutors argued for a driving ban, citing Parent’s 64 driving convictions. Crown is seeking an eight-year jail sentence and wants Parent to be prohibited from driving for 15 years. O’Brien died in the early hours of March 13, 2008. Earlier this year, a judge ruled that Parent, who was driving a diesel Ford F350, became enraged when he thought that the Chevy Silverado O’Brien was riding in had deliberately

Parent’s lawyer said that his client is remorseful and ashamed of what happened. Defense is asking for a three to four year jail term and a 36 to 48 month driving ban. His lawyer pleaded with the judge to consider allowing Parent to drive only for his work when he gets out of jail “He will be returning to live in society and he will need to be a contributing member and as a mechanic he is required to test drive the vehicles he works on, said defense. The judge asked if Parent wanted to say anything. Crying, Parent stood up and apologized “for ruining a lot of people’s lives. He asked the judge to not put him away for “a long time because it wouldn’t be fair to his step children. “I realize the O’Briens have lost their son and I’m sure they’d like to see me go away for a long time, said Parent. “I am very sorry for what happened. I wish it were me instead of him. Parent’s lawyer agreed that his driving record “is clearly problematic and troubling. Parent will be sentenced May 10.

Train derailment spills coal BY LACHLAN LABERE Eagle Valley News

Emergency crews are standing by as cleanup begins of a coal train derailment that occurred in Canoe earlier Monday morning. CP Rail spokesperson Kevin Hrysak says the derailment occurred at 5:30 a.m. near a railway crossing. Ten cars of the 124-car coal train went off the tracks, dumping its load on the lakeside of CP’s right of way. Hrysak says there were no

City of Salmon Arm staff shut down water to the hydrant at around 6 a.m., leaving residents on the north side of the tracks, without water until the scene is cleaned up. Fire crews continued to monitor the situation, as the derailment also impacted a hydro line, temporarily knocking out power, and also broke open a natural gas meter.

a balanced budget, just as the board moves to adopt a deficit fiscal plan. School District 79’s board of education is slated to give first and second reading to the deficit budget on Wednesday. Its expenditures amount to $3,771,661 more than district will receive as revenue from the Ministry of Education. It’s the board’s aim to seek that additional funding from the province in order to balance

the books. But Abbott has released the following statement to the News Leader Pictorial: “In recognition of the challenges presented by declining enrolment in the Cowichan Valley School District, government is providing $2 million in supplemental funding protection to the district next year, he said. “Boards of education, including the Cowichan Valley board of education, have a

legal responsibility under the School Act to pass a balanced budget by June 30, 2012 and after completing its budget deliberations this spring, I fully expect the board to uphold their responsibility. However, the ninemember board is split 5-4 in favour of submitting a deficit “restoration budget, in an effort to pressure the government to provide more funding to districts, and prevent further cutbacks.

THE CANADIAN PRESS WINNIPEG - Testimony is underway in the trial of a former Manitoba police chief accused of obstruction of justice. Harry Bakema (bah-KEE’-mah) is also accused of perjury and breach of trust in a botched police investigation into a deadly car crash in his East St. Paul jurisdiction seven years ago. Bakema is accused of deliberately torpedoing the investigation into the death of Crystal Taman (TAH’-munn), whose car was hit from behind by Derek Zenk, an off-duty Winnipeg police officer who had previously worked with Bakema. A public inquiry was told Bakema did not give Zenk a sobriety test or question him at the scene, and told a fellow officer to change his notes about the crash. Bakema denies those accusations and has pleaded not guilty. The first witness was an RCMP collision expert, who told court he took one look at Taman’s crushed vehicle and knew that whoever had been in that car would not have survived.

Cop shot by colleague’s gun THE CANADIAN PRESS CAMPBELLTON, N.B. - The bullet that injured an RCMP officer last week in northern New Brunswick came from the gun of his colleague, police in Quebec say. Sgt. Ronald McInnis of the Surete du Quebec, the provincial police force investigating the shooting, said the incident occurred following a chase when two Mounties were trying to stop a man wanted on a number of warrants. The car they were pursuing crashed into a ditch near Campbellton and the driver was taken into custody. McInnis couldn’t say how the officer was shot, but did confirm an RCMP weapon was involved. “The projectile came from the firearm of his teammate, he said Monday. McInnis could not release the name of the injured officer nor that of his colleague, but did say the injured cop has been released from hospital. The shooting occurred last Wednesday morning following the chase on the Flatlands Road, west of Campbellton.

OTTAWA - Another 3,800 civil servants were told Monday that their jobs are on the line. Parks Canada took the biggest hit in the government’s third wave of notifications, with over 1,000 people told their jobs are at risk. B.C.’s forestry jobs won’t wait for 2013

S

awmill tragedies in Prince George and Burns Lake have brought overdue attention to the larger crisis, as the end of B.C.’s latest pine beetle infestation continues to transform the Interior forest industry. The urgency of the timber supply situation was set out in a couple of highlevel documents that were leaked from the forests ministry in recent days. These leaks show several things, one of which is that this is a government in trouble. Someone on the inside forced the unpopular options into the public arena. Cabinet ministers have tried to dismiss the documents as early drafts, but no one has disputed their numbers. A report on mid-term timber supply looks at the four most beetleaffected areas: Prince George, Lakes (west of Prince George around Burns Lake), Quesnel and Williams Lake. In recent

years B.C.’s chief forester has increased the annual allowable cut of all these timber supply areas substantially to harvest dead trees. In Lakes, the pre-beetle annual allowable cut was 1.5 million cubic metres. Currently it is up to two million, but once the beetle wood is unusable, it drops to 500,000. Even if visual quality rules are relaxed to release more timber, forest employment in the area would go from 1,572 jobs before the beetle epidemic to 521. Prince George’s much larger harvest total is expected to drop by almost half. And around Quesnel, producers say an economic supply of dead pine will be there for only another year and a half. This document and a subsequent proposal to cabinet set out the options. They include relaxing visual quality areas, oldgrowth management zones and wildlife connec-

TOM

FLETCHER B.C. Views tivity corridors. This is not as drastic as it sounds, given that the first areas to be opened up would be those where many of the trees are already dead. Most beetle-affected areas have a substantial proportion of live trees. If decade-old dead trees were subsidized for biofuel use, this would support harvest and hauling of healthy sawlogs along with them. The government is also considering swapping some existing cutting licences to increase

wood supply for the Lakes district, to provide enough long-term supply for reconstruction of the destroyed Burns Lake sawmill. There is also the prospect of awarding unassigned timber to “a single representative of the six First Nations in the Lakes TSA.” Speaking to forest scientists who work in B.C., a couple of things become clear. This pine beetle epidemic may be the largest on record, but it is far from the first. And despite many assertions by former premier Gordon Campbell, it is not certain if this one is the result of a broader climate trend or just a string of warmer winters after decades of fire suppression kept older stands around. Lodgepole pine forests are fire-propagated. The term “old growth” has little meaning in a cycle of natural fires that

doesn’t occur in wetter zones. But none of this will matter much in the urban political debate that is about to ensue. “Old growth” is now a quasi-religious notion. International environmental groups have convinced most people that logging is the primary cause of forest loss. In fact, the UN’s “State of the World’s Forests” reports have shown that 95 per cent of global forest loss is due to agriculture. Forest cover is increasing in industrialized countries, which use farmland more efficiently. The B.C. Liberal government needs to make some tough decisions quickly, before next year’s election. The premier’s vow to “create and defend” jobs is about to be tested like never before. Tom Fletcher is legislative reporter and columnist for Black Press and BCLocalnews.com

LETTERS & OPINION

Harper’s transformation of Canada

O

ver the past six years under the Conservative government led by Stephen Harper, we have seen a relentless transformation of our country to one that is more closely aligned with the ‘corporate business agenda’ then ever before. This shift is taking place against a backdrop that has seen a progressive loss of MP ALEX investment in our country by the same corporate sector that Keeping has reaped the benefits of massive tax breaks, set to reach a staggering $220 billion by 2013-14. Amidst this decline in federal revenues there have been outrageous spending increases in our military budget to finance the war in Afghanistan and to purchase F-35 stealth bombers. Inexplicably, and for the first time in history, the Conservatives are spending $30 million to commemorate the war of 1812!! At the same time, the 2012 budget has cut $66.7 million to Veteran’s Affairs. It is shameful that a government so eager to send young people to war is shirking its responsibility to provide the care they and their families need at the end of their

service. With many veterans of the Balkan and Afghanistan wars needing help the Conservative government is shutting down veterans hospitals and downloading costs to the provinces. Seeking to emulate the failed US justice system, the Harper government’s crime legislation, Bill C-10, will result in billions being wasted to build super prisons at a time when the national crime rate has been House decreasing for years. To further Canada’s dismal performance on the international stage, the government has cut $377 million out of Budget 2012 to international aid and effectively ended our country’s participation in a number of international organizations. I find this embarrassing as Canada is already among the lowest international aid donor as a percentage of gross national income. The Prime Minister has also decided to raise the Old Age Security (OAS) eligibility from 65 to 67 even though experts are advising that this move is unnecessary as the current plan is entirely sustainable. The CBC is also being target-

ATAMANENKO

ed with a $115 million cut over the next three years as has the National Film Board which will lose $6.7 million and Telefilm $10.6 million. I find it reprehensible that the government has withdrawn its funding commitment to Katimavik. A number of communities in our riding have benefited from this nation-building program. What better way can there be for young people to get to know their own country than to live and work together on community projects and helping people in need right across Canada. I will bet that a lot of those young people from Quebec, who had a chance to live and work in Trail, Castlegar or Nelson under this program, will think twice before succumbing to separatist propaganda. In the face of so many of the government’s outrageous and wrong-headed spending and policy priorities, I am inclined to believe there is something ‘sinister’ going on in our country. Our government is giving the rich and powerful money to play with while gradually cutting all the threads of our caring and compassionate society. Those of us in all the opposition parties are doing our best to push back against this assault but it is not enough. We need your help! Alex Atamanenko MP BC Southern Interior

It’s called parenting, not snooping An editorial from the Kamloops Daily News The Canadian Press has reported that more than half of Canadian parents admit that they have snooped - even cyberstalked - on their kids’ Facebook page. The 11-country survey, which was done for a study on online safety, found the overall average of snooper parents was 44 per cent, lower than in Canada. The majority of those who spied on their kids were moms, though dads weren’t far behind. It turns out that Spanish parents were the most strict in this area - 61 per cent of them admitting secretly monitoring their children’s Facebook page. American parents also spy on their teens’ web activities more than Canadians. But one must question whether “snooping or “spying or “cyberstalking are the right words. Perhaps we should call it par-

enting. (And forgive us for using “parent as a verb, which it isn’t yet.) In fact, we think more Canadian parents should be diligent about keeping up with their kids’ and teens’ web activities all the time. And while they are probably wise to keep their monitoring under wraps around the kids - no point in letting that cat out of the bag prematurely they should feel no shame about keeping a sharp eye on their children’s activities. There’s no reason they should be embarrassed by it. And admitting it is not a “confession. Rather, they can take pride in being responsible parents with the very best intentions for their children’s welfare. We wonder when it became the norm for children to expect “privacy at home, anyway. It’s fine to accord children some space and independence as they earn it, but they should never be

free to demand that their parents butt out and stay out of any area of their lives. They can have their freedom when they become adults, move out and establish their own independence. (And that arrangement can dissolve quickly if the adult child dares return home.) As part of the survey, only about 38 per cent of Canadian parents said they had concerns that their teens’ social networking might negatively influence careers and other prospects later in life. That’s two per cent less than parents in the U.S., and four per cent less than the average of the 11 countries. Many may disagree, but we think 38 per cent isn’t nearly good enough; it would be preferable if 98 per cent of parents worried about their teens’ social networking and how it might affect their futures. That would be good parenting.

PEOPLE WITCHES RITUAL

QUEEN’S DIAMOND JUBILEE

Prince Charles and Camilla coming to Canada THE CANADIAN PRESS OTTAWA - Prince Charles and his wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, are coming to Canada next month as part of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations. The royal couple will visit Canadian Forces Base Gagetown in Oromocto, N.B., Saint John, Toronto and Regina from May 20 to 23. The theme of the tour is “For Queen and Country: Service to Canada - a royal and a national value.” This will be Charles’ 16th visit to Canada and Camilla’s second tour. They last visited in 2009. “Occasions such as this are rare,” Heritage Minister James Moore said in a statement. “The only other time Canada celebrated the Diamond Jubilee of a reigning King or Queen was for Queen Victoria in 1897. “We welcome the royal couple and look forward to showing them some of the best of what Canada has to offer.” While in Canada, Charles and Camilla will meet young veterans at Gagetown and the national leadership of the Assembly of First Nations

in Toronto, attend Victoria Day fireworks and a War of 1812 event in Toronto, and attend a performance by the Regina Symphony Orchestra. Moore says the trip will cost less than $1 million, before security costs are factored in. The minister says their last trip cost $1.76 million, while the Queen’s 2010 visit cost $2.79 million and Prince William and Kate’s tour last year cost $1.2 million. Also on Monday, Prime Minister Stephen Harper named former prime minister Jean Chretien as Canada’s representative to The Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust, which raises money for charities across the Commonwealth. “Former prime minister Chretien is uniquely qualified to serve as Canada’s representative to the Diamond Jubilee Trust,” Harper said in a news release. “Mr. Chretien is a member of the Queen’s prestigious Order of Merit. His relationship with Her Majesty, which spans over 40 years, includes six official royal tours he hosted during his time as prime minister.”

Billionaire wants to build high-tech replica of Titanic THE ASSOCIATED PRESS C A N B E R R A , Australia - An Australian billionaire said Monday he’ll build a high-tech replica of the Titanic at a Chinese shipyard and its maiden voyage in late 2016 will be from England to New York, just like its namesake planned. Weeks after the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the original Titanic, Clive Palmer announced that he had signed a memorandum of understanding with state-owned Chinese company CSC Jinling Shipyard to build the Titanic II. “It will be every bit as luxurious as the original Titanic, but ... will have state-of-the-art 21st-century technology and the latest navigation and safety systems,” Palmer said in a statement. He called the project “a tribute to the spirit of the

men and women who worked on the original Titanic.” More than 1,500 people died after the Titanic hit an iceberg in the North Atlantic on its first voyage. It was the world’s largest and most luxurious ocean liner at the time. Palmer built a fortune on real estate on Australia’s Gold Coast tourist strip before becoming a coal mining magnate. BRW magazine reported he was Australia’s fifthrichest person last year with more than 5 billion Australian dollars ($5.1 billion Cdn). Palmer said at a news conference that previous attempts to build a Titanic replica failed because proponents failed to raise enough money and commission a shipyard. The Titanic II is the first of four luxury cruise ships Palmer

has commissioned CSC Jinling Shipyard to build. Palmer did not provide a cost estimate. The diesel-powered ship will have four smoke stacks like the coal-powered original, but they will be purely decorative. The most obvious changes from the original Titanic would be below the water line, including welding rather than rivets, a bulbous bow for greater fuel efficiency and enlarged rudder and bow thrusters for increased manoeuvrability, Palmer said. Brett Jardine, general manager for Australia and New Zealand in the industry group International Cruise Council, said Titanic II would be small by modern standards but could prove viable at the top end of the luxury market.

Wal-Mart greeter saves life Triple amputee Darlene Thomas saves heart attack victim THE CANADIAN PRESS FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. - Residents in Fort St. John, B.C., are joining forces to reward a woman who helped save the life of a heart attack victim. Darlene Thomas is trained as a paramedic and a nurse, so saving lives isn’t new to her - but Thomas doesn’t work in health care anymore, she’s a greeter at the Wal-Mart in her northeastern B.C. city. She’s also a triple amputee. But when a 43-year-old man collapsed and

stopped breathing while Thomas was at work, she pushed herself out of her wheelchair, pulled off her prosthetic arm and began CPR, keeping the man alive until paramedics arrived. Since the April 9 incident, Thomas has been recommended for separate Wal-Mart and Red Cross awards, but the community is also offering something more practical. Thomas lives in a wheelchair inaccessible duplex and a trust fund has been set up at a local credit union to raise money for a much-needed ramp to her home, with any leftover cash earmarked for upgrades to make her bathroom more accessible.

Smokies hire assistant Castlegar man named Trail Smoke Eaters’ assistant coach

Steve Nelson of the Trail Colonials takes the ball, and were head and shoulders above the Nelson team Saturday at Upper Sunningdale park, as the West Kootenay Rugby Union held its first game of the season.

Trail Colonials take bite out of Grizzlies BY TIMES STAFF Kootenay Rugby Union action returned to the pitch Saturday, following last year’s season that saw the Trail Colonials crowned as champions for the first time in the Union’s four year existence. The defending champions hosted the Nelson Grizzlies in the season opener. As with last season, the Colonials’ ranks were bolstered by a significant contingent of players from the Grand Forks Wanderers and others travelling from as far away as Vernon. In a game that was characterized by good open field play and the occasional defensive breakdown, the Colonials fought hard and came out on top with a final score of 32-12. Captain Bryan

Lauzon called the game, “A good one to build on.” This was the Club’s first game since the retirement of long-time player and coach Ray Nelson at the end of last season. Ray received a Sport BC Community Sport Hero Award in February for his many contributions to the sport of rugby over the past 34 years. Trail’s next KRU action is a home and away series versus the Cranbrook Rogues, starting in Cranbrook on May 5, and back in Trail on May 26. The club is currently looking to recruit players of all experience levels. Full schedule and membership information can be found at the club’s webpage, facebook.com/

The juniors fared better, defeating Kimberley and Grand Forks by wide margins to finish 2-0. The next play day will be hosted Friday in Trail.

Vees put away Bandits Benik leads Vees with five-point night BY EMMANUEL SEQUEIRA The Penticton Western News

The Penticton Vees are Doyle Cup champions. In front of a crowd of close to 5,000, the Vees dumped the Brooks Bandits 6-2 to win the Doyle Cup in five games. Joey Benik netted a hat trick for the Vees, with his second of the game being the game-winner. “That was huge, it was a great feeling,” said Benik. “The hat trick just made the night better.” Benik, who led the championship with five goals, opened the scoring five minutes into the first period. The future St. Cloud State Husky

forward burst into the Bandits zone and fired a low shot that beat Bandits goalie Jan Obernesser five-hole. “(Steven) Fogarty had a great heads up play. He passed it to the middle there and I kind of had speed coming through the neutral zone and had the d-man beat,” explained Benik.” Then Fogarty, who finished with two goals on the night, gave the Vees a 2-0 lead when he scored a power play goal on a rebound that came to him near the corner. Benik’s eventual winner came with four minutes remaining in the first period and gave the Vees a 3-0 lead. The Vees led 5-1 after the second on goals by Benik, who also collected two assists, and Fogarty.

Benik said the key to their win was sticking to the game plan. He also said they didn’t get into any of the

“extra stuff with what they were trying to do with fighting and sticking guys. That was the key part, we had to stay disciplined, he said. “It’s a great feeling. It obviously hasn’t been done in a while. The Vees last won the Cup in 1986. With the win, the Vees advance to the Royal Bank Cup in Humboldt, Sask. May 5 to 13.

LEDUC, Alta. - Nick Glackin scored at 8:45 of double overtime and the Red Deer Rebels rallied for a 6-5 victory over the Phenix du College EstherBlondin in the Telus Cup final on Sunday. The game-winner completed a natural hat trick for Glackin, who scored back-to-back goals just over a minute apart midway through the third period to help the Rebels force overtime in the midget men’s hockey tournament. Red Deer was down 5-1 after two periods but scored four power-play goals in the third to mount its comeback. Scott Feser scored the other two third-period goals for the Rebels, while Brady Bakke scored shorthanded early in the second. The Phenix were up 3-0 after the first period on a pair of goals by Vincent Deslauriers while Frederik Gauthier scored at 19:40 while on the power play. Bakke cut into the lead 43 seconds into the second, but David Bergeron and Laurent Dauphin added power-play goals for College Esther-Blondin to make it 5-1 after two.

Hitchcock up for Jack Adams THE CANADIAN PRESS NEW YORK - Paul MacLean, Ken Hitchcock and John Tortorella are the nominees for the Jack Adams Award. The award is handed out to the head coach who has “contributed most to his team’s success. MacLean made a splash in his NHL debut as a head coach after spending six seasons as an assistant with Detroit. MacLean’s Ottawa Senators surprised the league with a playoff berth and an 18-point improvement over last season’s 13th place finish. The Sens also jumped from 26th to fourth in the league in goals per game. “He makes the hard work fun in a weird way, said Senators forward Nick Foligno. “He’s done a great job for us. He’s just come in and gotten to know everybody really well and understand what makes you tick and that’s what allowed everyone to play their best because he knows when to push buttons and when to let off and that’s what I think makes him such a great coach. Hitchcock took over the St. Louis Blues in early November with the team at 6-7-0. Since then the Blues went 43-15-11 and broke or tied 13 franchise records, including a

21-game home points streak and 30 home wins overall. It’s the fourth time Hitchcock has been nominated for the award, but the first in 13 years. Tortorella guided the Rangers to first place in the Eastern Conference with a 51-24-7 record, their best regular-season performance since capturing the Stanley Cup in 1994. The club’s goalsagainst figure (187) was tops in the East, and they also led all teams in hits (2,419). “It’s a great honour for him, said Rangers star Brad Richards. “He has worked with this organization the past three years to build something, and 51 wins this year is just a testament to him and the organization and how the players have bought in. Tortorella is the only one of the nominees to have won the award, when he led the Tampa Bay Lightning to the Stanley Cup in 2004. Dan Bylsma of the Pittsburgh Penguins won the award last year. The NHL also announced the nominees for Foundation Player Award. Nashville’s Mike Fisher, Toronto’s John-Michael Liles and Matt Moulson of the New York Islanders were given the nod.

In the bronze medal match-up, Branden Scheidl scored the winning goal midway through the third period as the Saskatoon Contacts edged the Leduc Oil Kings 3-2. Dawson Leedahl and Carson Stadnyk also scored for the Contacts while Vukie Mpofu chipped in with two assists. Despite not recording a single point against Leduc, Rourke Chartier finished the tournament as Saskatoon’s leading scorer with seven goals and 10 points in six contests. Hayden Dawes and Doug Morris each had a goal for the Oil Kings, who finished the tournament with four straight losses after opening with two victories. Mack Shields stopped 31 shots for the win while Brett Zarowny turned away 44 shots in defeat. Zarowny’s effort in net earned him Leduc’s player of the game honours while Scheidl picked up the same award for his club with his winning goal. Saskatoon went 1 for 3 on the power play as Leduc scored once on two chances with the extra man.

Forgive wife for past mistakes, let it go Dear Annie: My wife and I have been married for 45 years. We both grew up in this small Midwestern town. Until 10 years back, I thought it was a good marriage. The problem began when I found out some things that happened during our high school years. Through discussions with other classmates and conversations with friends, it became evident that there’s a lot I didn’t know about my wife. However, from our very first discussion about these incidents, she said this was none of my business, it’s in the past, and she shouldn’t have to answer any of my questions. But, Annie, some of what was revealed is hard to forget. I have sought counseling for this, and it has helped to some degree. My question now is: Am I in the wrong to want some kind of explanation or discussion of this infor-

mation? Is a spouse in such circumstances required to clear the air? I don’t need every detail, but shouldn’t I have enough to settle my anxiety? -Surprised Husband Dear Surprised: To your wife, these incidents are ancient history, and she’d like to forget about them. But you insist on picking the scabs off of her teenage scars because to you these incidents are fairly recent and you are still absorbing their impact. As far as she’s concerned, the explanation is simple: She was young and made mistakes. She grew up and changed her life. We understand that

you’d like more of an explanation, but she absolutely does not want to rehash her life before she married you. Unless something she did then has consequences that require action now, please accept that she is not that person any longer, and apparently, all for the good. You’ve been obsessing over this for 10 years, and we are certain it hasn’t helped your marriage. Whatever it was she did, please find a way to forgive her and let it go. Dear Annie: My wife and I have a small group of friends with whom we do something fun as a group every week or so. The problem is, we are the only ones who initiate this time together. If my wife and I don’t plan or host it, we sometimes won’t hear from these people for a month or more. To make it worse, we often hear about the fun things they

did without us during this time. We are tired of feeling left out and unimportant. Aside from finding new friends, we are at a loss. -- Frustrated with Friends in South Dakota Dear South Dakota: Are those “fun things” planned by others? Your friends could be the type of people who need to be organized by those willing to put forth the effort. And if they are arranging and hosting events and not including you, they are users who are happy to eat your food and share your plans, but have no intention of reciprocating. Most people fall somewhere in between. They aren’t trying to be rude. They simply aren’t paying attention. Your situation is in the category of “nothing to lose.” Take one of these socalled friends aside and ask what’s going on. Dear Annie: This is for “Texas,” who was fed up that her moth-

er ate food from her fridge without asking permission. So she let her mom eat a dog biscuit to teach her a lesson. She sounds like a stingy, thankless child. When I was a girl, my mother cooked and fed four children on a

tight budget. She often ate less so we could have more. As adults, we never had to ask her permission to take a cookie from her cookie jar or a drink from her refrigerator. In fact, we were urged to help ourselves.

My mom was always welcome to any food or beverage I had in my home, and I would gladly have served her a second plate. I’m offended that “Texas” would deliberately fool her mother and brag about it. -- Louisiana

YOUR HOROSCOPE By Francis Drake For Wednesday, May 2, 2012 ARIES (March 21 to April 19) This is a great day at work, because not only do you feel good, others are ready to help you! I say make the most of this and get a lot done. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) What a wonderful play day! You feel prankish, flirtatious and ready for fun. Enjoy vacations, parties, sports, playful times with children and social getaways. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Family relationships blossom today. This is a good day to invite the gang over for laughter and food, because you’ll enjoy entertaining at home. It’s an easygoing day. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Your positive frame of mind guarantees a good day for you today. After all, when you’re happy, you attract the right people as well as the

right situations -- have you noticed? Life seems to work this way. LEO (July 23 to Aug. 22) This is an excellent day for business and commerce; however, it’s best to postpone important decisions until tomorrow. Just wait. Whatever you set into action today will not tend to achieve its objective. VIRGO (Aug. 23 to Sept. 22) This is an easygoing, funfilled day, which no doubt will have a few goofy aspects. Expect shortages and delays -- but no one will mind. It’s all minor stuff. LIBRA (Sept. 23 to Oct. 22) You feel private today. If you can find an opportunity to enjoy solitude in beautiful surroundings, this will please you. Keep an eye out for the chance to make this luxury a reality.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23 to Nov. 21) All group activities are blessed today. Enjoy meetings with others, whether they are business or casual. Why not run something up the flagpole to see if anyone salutes? SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 to Dec. 21) Relations with authority figures will be extremely positive today. In fact, people in power will help you, through

encouragement, praise or even money. Yes! CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 to Jan. 19) Travel plans look exciting today. Similarly, plans related to higher education, the media, publishing, medicine and the law look equally optimistic. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 to Feb. 18) Because people are in a cooperative frame of mind today, you might want to

make decisions about shared property. However, it is wise to postpone these decisions until tomorrow. PISCES (Feb. 19 to March 20) Enjoy discussions with partners and close friends today; however, keep it light. Avoid important decisions. (It’s a goofy day.)
