Vanderhoof and Districts Co-operative AGM Allan Wishart Free Press It was another great year in 2011 for the Vanderhoof and Districts Co-operative Association and they are, literally, building on that for the future. The Co-op held its AGM on April 23 in Vanderhoof, and more than 220 people showed up to enjoy a great meal and get the latest news on the group. “Some of our managers were at meetings recently with other coops,” operations manager Allan Bieganski said, “and they were saying they were lucky to get 50 people out for their meetings. We usually have more than 200.” What those members heard was pretty much all good news. General manager Clifford Irving reported sales were up substantially in 2011, by $54.3 million. “Petroleum litres were up by 24.6 million, or 19 per cent. The food floor increased by $665,500, or 7.5 per cent, while home centre sales were down $133,000, or 2.3 per cent. “As well, Quesnel litre sales continue to increase, and after just the second full year of operation, we are at 16 million litres.” Irving said they ex-
pect the strong showing to continue in 2012. “We are projecting a sales increase of $24.7 million, or 12.9 per cent. The Central B.C. economy continues to be very strong. Lumber exports have improved through Asian markets, mining and drilling activities have increased at New Gold, and construction at Mt. Milligan and expansion at Endako Mines have resulted in an increased demand for fuel and consumer goods.” To help the Co-op continue to meet that demand, Bieganski says, they are continuing work on a number of projects around the north. “The construction of the store and agro-centre in Quesnel are pretty much complete. The next big project is starting to revamp the operation in Vanderhoof.” He said that will be done in a number of stages, including preparation work on the location for the new agricultural and hardware building centre, and we’ll begin working on a new storage building for our lumber and feed.” The current lumber and feed storage sheds will be removed and replaced with a building with an auto-stacking system for easy loading
A Walk for Justice
People were walking for justice in Vanderhoof on Saturday. The Walk for Justice: Ears to hear and death to violence attracted people from not just Vanderhoof, but surrounding communities. The walk itself went up Recreation Avenue, down Highway 16 and then along Burrard Street back to the ball park. Organizers say the walk was designed to let politicians and peace keepers know people want answers and they want safe communities. More photos on page 8 Photo by Brandi Hustins
of lumber and agricultural supplies. “We’re excited about the new construction in Vanderhoof, but there’s a lot of steps to go through to finish it.” The cardlock facility in Vanderhood is also
undergoing a major renovation, and a cardlock in the Hart Highway area of Prince George is close to starting. “We hope to have that one completed this year.” Bieganski said the
overall numbers from 2011 were “phenomenal.” “Our own bottomline margin was good, and we also got a good patronage refund of our own from Federated Co-operative Limited.”
Among other numbers reported at the AGM, it was noted recycling continues to be a focus for the stores, with more than 79 tons of cardboard shipped into Prince George for recycling. As well,
more than 10,000 litres of used oil was recycled last year. Cliff Irving was honoured during the 67th Annual Vanderhoof and Districts Co-op AGM. See More Co-op AGM on page 2

WorkSafeBC responds to mill safety concerns Ruth Lloyd Caledonia Courier WorkSafeBC issued a directive to all sawmill employers on April 26. The directive orders all sawmills in BC ‘without undue delay” to “undertake a comprehensive risk assessment with respect to hazards created by combustible dusts, which assessment must include a thorough inspection of the employer’s facility, and develop and implement an effective combustible dust control program based on the risk assessment.” WorkSafe has also committed to doing follow-up on-site inspections of all mills by May 9, to ensure em-
ployers have taken steps to comply with the directive. Since late January, two sawmills in the region have exploded, killing and injuring workers. The directive states failure to comply with the directive will result in further action which could include sanctions or stop work orders. First the Babine Forest Products mill in Burns Lake exploded on Jan. 20, killing one man and injuring 19 others. Then, on April 23, Lakeland Mills in Prince George experienced a similar incident. Two men have since died from their injuries and a total of 22 others were injured, five were still in serious
condition as of April 25. The tragic mill explosions have shaken confidence in mill worker safety in the region and WorkSafeBC is still investigating the causes of both explosions. RCMP have turned their investigation over to the BC Coroner’s Service and have ruled it no longer a criminal investigation. But wood dust has been suggested as a possible causal factor, given the large amounts of dry beetle-killed wood being processed in area mills. A WorkSafeBC report from Feb. 9, 2012 did note accumulations of wood dust noticed by the inspector and a discussion regarding pre-
venting hazardous accumulations was noted in the report. No direction was given to specific cleanup required. Apollo Forest Products Ltd. is owned by the same parent company as the Lakeland Mill, Sinclar Group Forest Products Ltd. Tl’oh Forest Products is also a partnership between Nak’azdli First Nation and the Sinclar Group. The Sinclar Group also operates Nechako Lumber, L&M Lumber and Premium Pellet in Vanderhoof. Sinclar Group Forest Products acknowledged meetings are scheduled with WorkSafeBC regarding the latest directive to take a look at dust cleanup in their facilities.
The group hopes to clarify what the direc-

Manslaughter charge Virgil Hummingbird Thomas has been charged with manslaughter in relation to a death on Tache Reserve. Thomas appeared briefly in court on April 24, and will be remanded in custody. His next court appearance is scheduled for May 22, and will take place via video conferencing. The charge is related to a death on the Tache Reserve on April 21. On the morning of April 21, RCMP were called to the Tache Reserve, northwest of Fort St. James, to a report of an unresponsive male. RCMP arrived to find a deceased adult male outside of a home who has since been identified as Alfred Joseph Jr. of Tache.
Family of both the accused and the deceased at the courthouse said both the men were known to each other and one relative described them as friends. The death of Joseph was ruled a homicide by RCMP, which means Joseph died as a result of another person’s actions. A manslaughter charge according to the Criminal Code of Canada can result when a “culpable homicide that otherwise would be murder may be reduced to manslaughter if the person who committed it did so in the heat of passion caused by sudden provocation.” There is no minimum charge for manslaughter, however the maximum sentence is life in prison.

critical foundation to success in school. “We are making the most of the teachers’ strike by putting all $37 million of strike savings back into the schools, in addition to the original $30 million of Learning Improvement Funds. At least this way we’re able to give back to the students, said Nechako Lakes MLA John Rustad The B.C. government is doubling the Learning Improvement Fund from $30 million to $60 million for the coming school year. The increase is due to province-wide operational savings of $37 million resulting from last month’s three-day teachers’ strike. All of the strike savings will remain with school districts with $30 million being applied to Learning Improvement Fund, and the remaining $7 million to be used by school boards for educational priorities in their respective districts.

Do mosquitoes love you?
The best part of summer is being outdoors with nature, the worst part of summer is being outdoors with nature, specifically the buzzing bloodsucking kind. If you’re like me and worry about the over use of chemicals in your day to day life, it might be worth looking into some natural alternatives. A common mosquito repellent for use in either a diffuser, vaporizer or burner would be a few drops of any of the following oils: Citronella, Geranium, Lemon, Patchouli or Sandalwood work great, you can even play with combinations to get a scent you’ll love with additional benefits. Catnip is a common repellent used in many natural bug sprays, though its use is cautioned if you plan to be hiking in the woods, even though Catnip deters certain bugs, it also attracts certain cats. Your local health conscious suppliers can help you create a quick, easy and inexpensive array of bug fighting and bug deterring sprays. (Sometimes with nothing more than water and essential oils to give it that bug blasting boost). All the best for a safe and healthy summer.

The social information age Bill Phillips Prince George Free Press Dwarfed by the conflagration at Lakeland Mills Monday night, (April 23) were the Northern Lights. It was kind of surreal as I raced to the scene of the fire and watched the dancing lights in the northern sky. The Northern Lights are always spectacular and mesmerizing. However, on Monday, a much more pressing task was at hand. For the media, covering such an event is challenging and exhilarating all at the same time. With the Internet so prevalent in today’s news gathering, everyone is scrambling to get information out, and quickly. I have to tip my hat the folks at the Citizen who printed off copies of their paper and then were distributing them to fire onlookers as the events unfolded. It’s a challenge to get news out quickly online, but even more challenging to get it out quickly in print. The other challenge is to get accurate information out and, with the speed of the Internet, the mantra now, is too often, “post now, correct as you go.” There is an inherent danger in doing that, which is, of course, publishing incorrect information. With the “virality” of news on the web, news like a big fire and explosion travel very, very fast. Wrong information can go far and wide faster than we can take it back. Monday night’s fire was a prime example. Fire Chief John Lane announced shortly after 11 p.m. that there were five people unaccounted for. Shortly after that announcement I headed back to the office and posted that to our Facebook page. Within minutes there was a posting on our Facebook page saying that CKPG was reporting all were accounted for. All this within 15 or 20 minutes. I didn’t have it confirmed that were accounted for, but pulled the “five missing” tag from the headline. As media, we have to keep in mind that it’s not only the public at large who may be seeking information, but family and friends of those involved. The wrong information can be devastating. Getting the right information is what our role really is in times of crisis … not getting the wrong information first. Having said that I think the Prince George media did a stellar job of covering the explosion and fire. Checking websites, Twitter feeds, Facebook pages, etc. Monday night I didn’t encounter any wildly speculative or sensational stories from the Prince George media. You can check our website for a “storified” account of the night’s social media traffic, which is basically a conglomeration of posts from all sorts of people regarding the blaze. It’s fascinating to see how far and how quickly the news travelled in this, the social information age. The Omineca Express is published every Wednesday in Vanderhoof by Black Press Ltd. Please watch for Maddy Editor: Re: 20 year old Madison Scott still missing as anniversary date approaches Unbelievably, my 20-year-old niece, Madison Scott, remains missing after mysteriously disappearing on Saturday, May 28, 2011, from the Hogsback Lake forestry campsite 25 kms south of Vanderhoof, one hour west of Prince George. She was camping with a group of young people from Vanderhoof who were celebrating a friend’s birthday. Everyone left the party by about 4 a.m., and Maddy was left alone at the campsite. Something happened that led to Maddy’s disappearance; foul play is suspected. Maddy remains missing despite a vigorous and in depth RCMP investigation and ongoing efforts by family and friends. We believe someone knows where she is, but they have not come forward with the truth. The purpose of this letter is to appeal to all British
Columbians and visitors to be watchful for and mindful of anything suspicious as they head out into the outdoors as spring and summer approach. Our family needs everyone’s help. Speak out on missing women Editor, It is time for the people of British Columbia to lend their voices on how our most vulnerable women can be made safer. Along with the Missing Women Commission of Inquiry hearings, we are set to hold a series of six important Public Policy Forums as a component of the Missing Women Commission of Inquiry Study Commission. These forums will be held in downtown Vancouver from May 1 to May 10, and will focus on how to improve the safety and security of vulnerable women. More information can be found by going to the Commission’s website at www.missingwomeninquiry.ca. The Public Policy Forums need the input, feedback and ideas of the people of British Columbia. While
the information gathered in these forums is not considered evidence relevant to the testimony put forward in the hearings, your input will provide me with proposals for change and related contextual information that will help to inform the writing of my report. We need to hear from you—as mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles and friends. We need to hear from you as a person, as a fellow human being, as someone who cares about improving the safety and security of vulnerable women who are still at risk today. We need you to tell us what you feel needs to be addressed, improved upon and changed—so a report can be produced that has practical, effective recommendations that can be implemented in the real world that we live in.
While space is limited at the Public Policy Forums in Vancouver, there are many additional ways to participate. The forums will be live streamed via our website at www.missingwomeninquiry.ca. You can provide your feedback via email at participate@ missingwomeninquiry.ca or send a letter to us at #1402 – 808 Nelson Street, Vancouver, BC, V6Z 2H2. We are asking the good people of British Columbia to stand up and tell us what you believe needs to be done to help save the lives of vulnerable women at extreme risk. A Walk for Justice Ears to Hear and Death to Violence Cathy Malo April 28th at around 12:00 noon, a crowd of people gathered together to show strength against the drugs and violence that is sweeping through our communities! As the rain poured down relentlessly, they all stood to listen from the families of the missing and murdered! Looking for answers as to why and where!? Hereditary Chief Robert Charlie, Chief in Burns Lake for 22 years, who spoke in support for all First Nations in our area as well as Saikuz Nation Chief Jackie Thomas who agreed, there must be change! The Mayor spoke of change, a letter from Dick Harris also spoke of change to the judicial system! We heard from Doug Leslie, Father of the murdered, Loren Leslie, heart wrenching pleas from the sister and Mother of the murdered, Fribjon Bjornson, Amanda and Eileen Bjornson!! The family of the missing P. J. Sebastian drove to Vanderhoof in support and searching for any answers to their missing son, father, brother, cousin!!! Also the Uncle of Chassidy Charlie from the Cheslatta Reserve, also brutally murdered, looking for justice for his
niece! We stood together and heard from Amir Javid, motivational ex gang member who had us all hold hands, arm in arm, to show support to those families and said that this was a start for the communities to stand together and begin to look out for one another! Fallfires Burn played for us all while the sky’s kept pouring down! Songs written in support against drugs and violence and a few cover songs to entertain the now drenched crowd!! It is very hard to describe the feeling of togetherness that was felt that afternoon as we walked proudly down Highway 16 and through the main core of Vanderhoof. William Plasway, an honored drummer who drummed for the Olympics in Vancouver, lead the way with fellow drummers, singing and drumming through town! There is no doubt that these communities have one thing in common, Fort St. James, Burns Lake, Cheslatta, Fraser Lake and Vanderhoof, we all want change, we need answers and we will stand together, no matter what the weather, to achieve just that! As Amir Javid said, the rain was a cleansing!! There are some people that need to be thanked

wedding guide
Unique reception touches Over the course of their lifetimes, many people will be wedding guests on several occasions. During the height of wedding season, weddings can run into one another, as the format and the festivities are similar at various ceremonies. Couples interested in setting their nuptials apart may want to enhance the wedding reception with a few unique ideas. * Skip the big entrance. Those who were kind enough to attend the ceremony have already been introduced to the newly minted happy couple. Instead of spending the cocktail hour in the isolation of the wedding suite, mingle with your guests from start to finish. So much time is spent posing for pictures or being out of touch with guests, the cocktail hour can be a great time to sit and chat. Being with guests during the cocktail hour means you don’t have to make that big entrance from behind closed doors. Guests will have all eyes on you when you step on the dance floor for your first dance together. * Dance to an upbeat number. Guests are expecting a slow, sappy tune. What they may not expect is an upbeat song that shows you are willing to have a little fun. * Encourage couples to dance together. It’s often customary for the bridal party to join the bride and groom on the dance floor midway through the first dance. However, that leaves spouses or significant others waiting in the wings while their dates tango with groomsmen or bridesmaids. Instead, don’t have assigned partners. Rather, encourage your bridal par-
Stylish Stems
ty members to dance with whomever they choose. * Swap the garter/bouquet toss for something more meaningful. If you’re part of a couple who feels the garter and bouquet toss has become trite, there are other ways to create special moments in your celebration -- ones that don’t single out the singletons who haven’t yet found their special someones. Use this time to present a small gift or token of your affection to someone on the guest list who has served as a mentor or source of inspiration. * Choose one special component as an extra goodie for guests. Some couples feel the more they offer the better guests will view their wedding. Spending more money doesn’t necessarily mean guests will have a better time. If you want to go above and beyond the ordinary, find one thing that you absolutely love and offer that at the party. It could be a flambe presentation, a chocolate or candy bar, a carving station with your all-time favorite food (even if that’s PB&J), or a carnival-inspired automatic photo booth. * Let them eat ... cookies? Some people just don’t like cake. Therefore, why should a couple have to cut a seven-tiered white confection? Towers of different types of treats can be created from just about anything and serve as the perfect backdrop for that classic cake-cutting photo. A pyramid of cream puffs, stacks of brownies, a cookie castle, or cereal-cake concoctions can work. Some bakeries will decorate a “dummy” styrofoam cake, and then you can serve apple pie a la mode, if you desire.

Watch out for trains
Playing around railway tracks can result in tragic consequences. In 2011, 42 people were seriously injured and 70 people were killed after being struck at road-rail crossings or trespassing on railway tracks across Canada. Rail Safety Week, which runs from April 30 to May 6, is a good time to remind ourselves about safe behaviour around tracks and trains. Here are three important tips to al-

CNC receives funding for skills training The province has given CNC $725,337 in one-time funding to deliver skills, trades and technical training at its campuses this year. The college will use the funding to deliver several in-demand courses and programs, such as adding a total of 32 student seats to Power Engineering, 16 in Prince George and 16 at the Quesnel campus. “These funds will greatly assist CNC to expand our trades and technical training in northern B.C.,” said CNC President John Bowman. “It’s important to note that this is one-time funding, which must be used to deliver new and additional training opportunities.” CNC will also use the funding to deliver: Mine Certificate training
programs in Mackenzie, Vanderhoof, Quesnel and Prince George; Heavy Equipment Operator or Construction Assistant in Burns Lake; Introduction to Trades in Prince George; Hospitality/Customer Service Training for Immigrant Women in Prince George; and possibly more. “Through the BC Jobs Plan, we are working to meet the skills gap, connecting workers with job opportunities and training British Columbians for those job openings,” Jobs, Tourism and Innovation Minister Pat Bell said. “This funding is another example of how our government is being flexible and responsive to offer training that helps address regional labour market needs.”

Every Child, Every Chance, Every Day Marla Bisanz Saturday April 21, 2012 marked the first annual Fraser Lake Junior Leadership Conference Sponsored by the Vancity Community Foundation and Early Childhood Educators of British Columbia (ECEBC). One year ago local Early Childhood Educator Marla Bisanz applied to ECEBC for $10,000.00 in funding to accomplish her goal to support leadership skills in youth in grades 4-7. Assembling a team of educators, Trish Olin and Kiona Armatage, Bisanz and
her team travelled several times to Vancouver to plan, research existing youth centers/programs and create an opportunity for local youth to connect, strengthen and celebrate their unique individuality, self-worth and social abilities. The final outcome a spring conference that supported local youths growth in: self esteem, family and community commitment, social responsibility, anti bullying messaging, and leadership skills. Bisanz, recipient of the 2009 Prime Ministers Award of Excellence in Early Childhood Education continues to sup-
port and promote her philosophy, Every Child, Every Chance, Every Day. She said this experience has been rewarding and challenging and she commends the strength, commitment and passion of her team members, Trish Olin and Kiona Armatage, exceptional leaders committed to quality childcare! Over thirty local youth from the communities of Fort Fraser and Fraser Lake participated in the conference. The leadership team plans to continue this event annually and looks forward to the next group of Junior Leaders in 2013!
