f attendance is a barometer of success, then the last open house at Alberni District Secondary School was a resounding success. More than 1,000 former students attended the Old School Celebration on Saturday at the high school. “I’m not surprised, not surprised at all that this many people showed up for this,” event organizer Brian Laviolette said. The event was between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. and offered a chance for the public to tour the school one last time, see some displays and reminisce. The foot traffic in the school was steady all day but was heaviest after 11 a.m., Laviolette said. The year book display spanning five decades in ‘Eyeball Alley’ was the most popular attraction, he said. “The hallway became a bottleneck and was tough to manoeuvre through sometimes.” Whether you went to the school in 1952 or 2002, people still displayed strong ties to the school. “Generally people were emotional to some extent, especially when they saw classmates they hadn’t seen since they graduated,” Laviolette said. In the main hallway, Ramona Gus (Taylor), and Ed Bayne, 79, moved gingerly about

Friends stay united past grad From / 3 The school wasn’t just part of the community, but instead was a community unto itself, former students recalled. Graduation ceremonies were held in the ADSS auditorium then, something the ladies remembered in particular. “I remember graduation in the school’s auditorium, walking down the aisle trying not to trip while wearing high heels, Dyson said. The group spread out after graduation, going to school, working, marrying and having families. However, they’ve

moved to Vancouver where he worked for MacMillan Bloedel. He earned an accountancy designation, a profession he worked at until he retired. Today, he lives in North Vancouver but makes it to Port Alberni from time to time. “Our group remained friends for a long time and we are very close, Jones said. “There’s four others who live in Vancouver who I’m friends with that I’m having lunch with tomorrow. The next school celebration will be when the new facility opens on Roger Street.

Southport—or uptown, or Port Alberni’s old downtown—has found a champion in Gayle Stephen-Player. Stephen-Player has owned and operated Gayle’s Fashions and Fitness in Southport since 1983; her first two years on Argyle Street between First and Second avenues, and the rest of the time on Fourth Avenue. She loves the mix of residential, commercial and industrial buildings, and has always seen the area’s potential. She believes in Southport, and now leads a group of 20 like-minded merchants wanting change. They have already taken a few steps: labelling themselves Historic Southport and creating a website;

◆ ‘HISTORIC SOUTHPORT’ has a website, historicsouthport. ca. For more info, call Gayle StephenPlayer at 250-7232623.

and meeting with the RCMP and city officials to address social issues like public drunkenness, drugs, prostitution. “What we want to do is make it more attractive for new businesses to start up; make it welcoming, Stephen-Player said. “Our main focus is to bring a positive buzz to the area. That is already starting, she said, with projects like the Little Bavaria centre and new businesses opening. The group will

assemble a round table in the summer with stakeholders such as merchants, the police, city, Vancouver Island Health Authority and other agencies to come up with workable solutions to make uptown a better place to live and do business, she said. “We can go and put up some pretty flowers and put up some pretty lights and pipe in some music, but until we get the social issue part rolling we can’t really move too quickly on anything else, she said. The vision is there, and the political will is coming. What Southport really needs now are more champions, StephenPlayer said. “More people coming on board with positive attitudes towards the area.

School district cuts teacher jobs at ADSS WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

There will be eight fewer teachers and

no drama program at Alberni District Secondary next year, Alberni District Teachers’ Union President Ken Zydyk

said Wednesday. There will be 17.5 fewer full-time equivalent (FTE) teachers across School District 70 next

“A Tale of Two Citiesâ€? year, Zydyk said. The cuts are the result of declining student enrolment. The bulk of the losses are at Alberni District Secondary School where eight pinks slips are expected to be handed out. “This is over half of the reduction, Zydyk said. It’s not just teachers that will be lost at the high school but programs as well. “It’s my understanding

that drama and project based learning will not be offered next year and there may be others, Zydyk said. The cuts coincide with the Bill 22 removal of class size limits. Zydyk says he expects to see class sizes increase. The district usually projects enrolment and calculates teacher decline at this time of year, then readjusts when the

final numbers are crunched in the fall. But that may not be the case this year. “Yes, things could change, but I understand the enrolment numbers at ADSS are projected to be the same this fall, Zydyk said. SD 70 chair Larry Ransom couldn’t be reached for comment. SD 70 trustee Glenn Wong confirmed that the district is losing teaching positions

but could not confirm how many. The district is projecting a four per cent decline in student enrolment next school year, and positions fluctuate based on that. “We will be losing teachers, but there will be no shortage of teachers per student, Wong said. to more than one million. DFO is also forecasting a strong Chinook return with an allocation of 37,000 pieces. A surplus of 10,000 will be split between aboriginal, commercial and sports, Tatoosh said. The numbers are lower than the 47,000 and 15,000 surplus in 2011. The Hupacasath were scheduled to review the numbers and the economic opportunity agreements at a community meeting on Wednesday night. The Tseshaht have a similar review scheduled for Thursday night, Tatoosh said. If fisheries calculations are correct then it could be a banner year for the fishery, said Bob Cole of the Alberni Sportsfishing Advisory Committee. “Last year they forecast 600,000 and it ended up being 1.4 million, Cole said. “If they use the same criteria then it’s going to be a monster run. Local groups worked to redo the fish allocation table and guiding principles and the result was universally beneficial. “The groups all cooperated and all compromised, Cole said. “If this was before then we’d still be fighting at the table. The Chinook numbers are a little low but are workable, he said. “If we end up with 60,000 instead of 43,000 we’ll be OK. If it’s 43,000 then we still have a plan, Cole said. “But after all that sockeye — who cares?

Doctors get proactive It started with one doctor. And now that doctor is hoping to multiply his efforts 500-fold. Port Alberni Dr. Daryl Lund started Walk With Your Doc last year, and drew a modest number of people—primarily his patients—to Bob Dailey Stadium for a BC Medical Association-sponsored walk. This year, Lund has persuaded several of his medical colleagues to join him. This walk doesn’t have set distances. It is not raising money for anything. Anyone can join. The end goal is simply to raise awareness about being healthy, and to have fun while you’re succeeding. Nevertheless, Walk With Your Doc, taking place on Thursday, May 10 at the stadium, has snowballed from there. Parks and Rec has ensured the walk will be a memorable event; there will be live entertainment and information booths. Lund hopes to draw 500 people to the stadium, rain or shine. It is gratifying to see how many people have jumped on board with this event, because it shows who has a vested interest in the physical health of the Alberni Valley. The walk is a natural fit for the Integrated Health Network, says dietitian Sandra Gentleman, because it fits the IHN’s role of promoting health. The same goes for Parks and Rec, which is all about developing lifestyles for people. So take the time on Thursday, May 10 to walk with your doctor on a path to a healthier lifestyle. Registration begins at 5:30 p.m. and the walk starts at 6 p.m. — Alberni Valley News

Forest jobs won’t wait for ’13 election TOM FLETCHER B.C. Views

V

ICTORIA – Sawmill tragedies in Prince George and Burns Lake have brought overdue attention to the larger crisis, as the end of B.C.’s latest pine beetle infestation continues to transform the Interior forest industry. The urgency of the timber supply situation was set out in a couple of high-level documents that were leaked from the forests ministry in recent days. These leaks show several things, one of which is that this is a government in trouble. Someone on the inside forced the unpopular options into the public arena. Cabinet ministers have tried to dismiss the documents as early drafts, but no one has disputed their numbers. A report on mid-term timber supply looks at the four most beetle-

affected areas: Prince George, Lakes (west of Prince George around Burns Lake), Quesnel and Williams Lake. In recent years B.C.’s chief forester has increased the annual allowable cut of all these timber supply areas substantially to harvest dead trees. In Lakes, the pre-beetle annual allowable cut was 1.5 million cubic metres. Currently it is up to two million, but once the beetle wood is unusable, it drops to 500,000. Even if visual quality rules are relaxed to release more timber, forest employment in the area would go from 1,572 jobs before the beetle epidemic to 521. Prince George’s much larger harvest total is expected to drop by almost half. And around Quesnel, producers say an economic supply of dead pine will be there for only another year and a half.

This document and a subsequent proposal to cabinet set out the options. They include relaxing visual quality areas, oldgrowth management zones and wildlife connectivity corridors. This is not as drastic as it sounds, given that the first areas to be opened up would be those where many of the trees are already dead. Most beetleaffected areas have a substantial proportion of live trees. If decadeold dead trees were subsidized for biofuel use, this would support harvest and hauling of healthy sawlogs along with them. The government is also considering swapping some existing cutting licences to increase wood supply for the Lakes district, to provide enough long-term supply for reconstruction of the destroyed Burns Lake sawmill. There is also

the prospect of awarding unassigned timber to “a single representative of the six First Nations in the Lakes TSA.” Speaking to forest scientists who work in B.C., a couple of things become clear. This pine beetle epidemic may be the largest on record, but it is far from the first. And despite many assertions by former premier Gordon Campbell, it is not certain if this one is the result of a broader climate trend or just a string of warmer winters after decades of fire suppression kept older stands around. Lodgepole pine forests are fire-propagated. The term “old growth” has little meaning in a cycle of natural fires that doesn’t occur in wetter zones. But none of this will matter much in the urban political debate that is about to ensue. “Old growth” is now a quasireligious notion. Global environmental groups have convinced most people that logging is the primary cause of forest loss. Continued / 9

QUESTION of the week

Children suffer while Oda wallows To the Editor, We now know the Conservative government’s priorities for CIDA: when a twocent vitamin aid pill can prevent blindness, when $20 of antibiotics can prevent a death from tuberculosis (and the spread of the deadly disease to dozens of others), CIDA minister Bev Oda blows the budget by shacking up in the most expensive hotel in London, one usually reserved for visiting royalty. The attitude this demonstrates is appalling. The

Conservatives have cut CIDA’s budget by almost $400 million, a decision that will result in the deaths of tens of thousands of the world’s poorest, and yet they find the money to treat their minister like the royalty she perceives herself to be. Oda’s arrogance reminds me of Marie Antoinette, with her haughty “let them eat cake” attitude to the starving poor. It is one of gross entitlement, while children in CIDA’s care, children under her watch, die needlessly. Nathaniel Poole, Victoria

Forests, farms compete From / 8 In fact, the UN’s “State of the World’s Forests” reports have shown that 95 per cent of global forest loss is due to agriculture. Forest cover is increasing in industrialized countries, which use farmland more efficiently. The B.C. Liberal government needs

to make some tough decisions quickly, before next year’s election. The premier’s vow to “create and defend” jobs is about to be tested. Tom Fletcher is legislative reporter and columnist for Black Press and BCLocalnews.com tfletcher@blackpress.ca

Mailbag: Feedback on news items Oppal requests inquiry input To the Editor, It is time for the people of British Columbia to lend their voices on how our most vulnerable women can be made safer. Along with the Missing Women Commission of Inquiry hearings, we are set to hold a series of six important Public Policy Forums as a component of the Missing Women Commission of Inquiry Study Commission. These forums will be held in downtown Vancouver from May 1–10 and will focus on how to improve the safety and security of vulnerable women. More information can be found by going to the Commission’s website at www.missing womeninquiry.ca. The public policy forums need the input, feedback and ideas of British Columbians. While

the information gathered in these forums is not considered evidence relevant to the testimony put forward in the hearings, your input will provide me with proposals for change and related contextual information that will help to inform the writing of my report. We need to hear from you as people who care about improving the safety and security of vulnerable women who are still at risk today. We need you to tell us what you feel needs to be addressed, improved upon and changed—so a report can be produced that has practical, effective recommendations that can be implemented in the real world that we live in. While space is limited at the forums in Vancouver, there are many additional ways to participate. The forums will be live streamed via our website. You

can provide your feedback via email at participate@missing womeninquiry.ca or send a letter to us at #1402 – 808 Nelson Street, Vancouver, BC, V6Z 2H2. We are asking people to stand up and tell us what they believe needs to be done to help save the lives of vulnerable women at extreme risk. Wally Oppal, commissioner, Missing Women Commission of Inquiry

Why fuss over Conrad Black? To the Editor, Lordy, Lordy, look who’s comin’ back. It’s that unrepentant mogul, Baron Conrad Black. The US system is going clickety-clack to eject him from his penal shack. But Conrad Black is no ordinary hack; he’s as sharp as an upholstery tack. Getting what he wants has become a knack and powerful friends he does not lack.

Why is poor Mister Harper taking flak for opening our border just a crack? Lloyd Atkins, Vernon

Stirling could be much more To the Editor, Food for thought for the marina/ Stirling Field area. An authentic west coast wood village. Envision a horseshoe-shaped wood building at the marina housing marine retail, ice, a mural and bio of George Clutesi on the side, areas of interactive marine ideas and areas for club activities. Kiosks depicting our history, culture and tsunami in the area. a new port authority building that juts out to moored berths or utilize shared space. A roundabout road remains intact. Blast off the rock at the end of launch and put in an extra lane. First Nations berthing could go

to the right of the launch with extra overnight berthing. First Nations seafood marketing along the river. Stirling ball field, with an easy right turn entrance, is the best “visual” site for another wood structure that accomodates outdoor theatre venues, retail, art demos, a gallery and boutique shopping. Landscape it with leisure areas and floodlight it at night for affect. Behind the field you could have light camping with trailer parking available behind the new Ford dealership. Dense residential could convert to home businesses and lend to this “wood west coast village” feel in the area that leads one to the marina, a walking pier along the river, where a charming ultimate fishing town could emerge. One can dream right? Carolyn Jasken, Port Alberni

Crossroads… “Go to the busiest crossroads you know, and try to notice everything; all the people, the cars, the buses, the colours, the noises, the clouds, the birds, the spaces. Notice also the impatience. No picture the cross on which Jesus died as a crossroads of people, time and place; a physical crossroads, through which at some time all people pass. Understand the cross as a meeting-place of all history with God, the source of all love, forgiveness, and peace.” (A meditation from Aidan Clarke in ‘Celtic Daily Prayer’)

DR. NEILL NEILL Living

his column is not just for those who are mentally ill, but for anyone who has wondered what it would be like to be mentally ill or to have a family member who is. I have personal experience with mental illness. Members of my extended family have suffered with schizophrenia, severe depression or bipolar disorder. I have also had pupils, friends, colleagues and clients with these afflictions. These types of severe mental illnesses are physical diseases of the brain, just as tuberculosis is a disease of the lungs. Most mental illnesses can be treated with medication, but as yet medical cures are elusive. Since these diseases affect a person’s brain, the afflicted person may perceive reality differently and even have hallucinations and delusions. Reality is inconsistent and life is very difficult and frustrating. Recall the movie, A Beautiful Mind, starring Russell

Crowe. Parents who are coming to the realization that their son or daughter (whether child or young adult) is mentally ill are usually heavily traumatized by it. The unresolved trauma shows up in denial, fear, anger, guilt, shame, blame, feelings of helplessness, and prolonged grief. Marriages sometimes come apart. Some become estranged from their mentally-ill offspring. What we often forget is that the mentally-ill may also be severely traumatized. They may have had huge developmental traumas before diagnosis— having learning difficulties, being labeled as weird or different, and being judged stupid or unmotivated. Then as they begin to understand that they have a mental illness, the trauma of the realization produces the denial, fear, anger, shame and blame—in fact, all of the same negative emotions their family members are experiencing. But it goes further. The mentally-ill person may also experience prolonged grief over the loss of hope and the possible

loss of a productive future, marriage and children. These heavy-duty sufferings of the mentally ill are not part of the mental illness. They are the normal human aftermath of severe trauma. Such trauma, both in the person afflicted with the mental illness and in their families, can be treated. There is a variety of effective psychotherapeutic treatment options for traumatic stress. I like some of the cutting edge energy psychology methods because of their gentleness and the fact that clients can learn to do so much on their own. Let’s all try to remember that those with mental illnesses are, first of all, people. As human beings they may be subjected to all the varieties of emotional suffering the rest of us are. They deserve the same chance as anyone else for some peace, self-acceptance, self-love, connection and enjoyment of life. Dr. Neill is a CentralIsland Registered Psychologist. You can reach him at 250-752-8684 or through his website www.neillneill.com/ contact.

The man who was shot while trying to rob Dieverts Jewelers in Port Alberni in 2008 has died in custody. Corrections Canada stated in a press release that James Gumbleton, 48, died of natural causes in a prison treatment centre after a lengthy illness. He was still in custody. In October 2008, Gumbleton was one of two masked men who entered Dievert’s Jewelers on Johnston Road and tried to rob the store owner’s wife at gunpoint. The store owner shot Gumbleton multiple times. Gumbleton, who was paralyzed from the waist down as a result of the shooting, pleaded guilty to robbery with a firearm in Port Alberni Provincial Court in 2010 and was sentenced to four years in prison. He was also serving a sentence for other charges unrelated to the robbery, Corrections Canada reported.

Canadians are living longer and costs for the Old Age Security (OAS) are rising. On April 1, 2023 the Government of Canada plans to start raising the age of eligibility for OAS and the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) from 65 to 67.*

Starting in July 2013, Canadians who are eligible for, but not yet receiving OAS will have the flexibility to delay receiving it in exchange for a higher monthly amount at a later date.

Walk with your Doc May 10 Take a walk with your doc on Move for Health Day next Thursday, May 10 at Bob Dailey Stadium. This is the second year for the Walk With Your Doc event in Port Alberni. Last year Dr. Daryl Lund started the event with a handful of participants. This year, several more doctors have signed on and Lund has teamed with the Integrated Health Network (IHN) and the city’s parks and recreation department to put on a bigger event. “It’s part of a province-wide initiative sponsored by the BC Medical Association, and is intended to be a preventative health opportunity designed to encourage patients to walk with their doctors on a path to healthier lifestyles,” Lund said. Two bands have been booked to provide entertainment, including The Elderly Brothers (formerly Rocket 88). Band member Howie Anderson participated in last year’s walk despite being in poor health. “He did one lap with the walker.

Lund is hoping to draw 400–500 people for the walk. Research has shown that adults who sleep six hours or less per night, over time, may have an increased risk of heart disease, diabetes, obesity and insulin resistance. In addition, sleeping less generally means eating more over a

24-hour period and hence, unintentional weight gain. Depression, headaches, substance abuse and automobile accidents also have a relationship with chronic insomnia. Driving drowsy can be as dangerous as impaired driving. In general, the types of sleep problems include difficulty falling asleep, trouble maintaining sleep, early morning awakening, unrefreshing sleep, and behaviours that interfere with sleep, such as snoring, teethgrinding, restless legs, dry mouth, sleepwalking and breathing problems. Ways to sleep better include some daily routines, and also food and fluid considerations. • Unwind. Taking a bath/shower, listening to calming music or reading a book are a few ways to relax before bed. Limit

electronic screen time, including TV, computer games, or going online, which are all stimulating activities. • Exercise regularly a few hours before bed. Studies show that people who have daily activity in their routine have a deeper sleep. • Follow a similar sleep/wake routine daily. People who have various routines for waking up and sleeping times are more likely to have sleep disturbances. • Limit naps to less than 30 minutes, if at all. Napping too long during the day is linked with trouble sleeping at night. • If falling asleep is the issue, try getting up and doing a calming activity after 30 minutes of lying in bed trying to sleep. If you try too hard to fall asleep, it may backfire and make it more difficult. • Make your

bedroom a sanctuary. If your room is comfortable and only used for sleeping (not an office, or entertainment room), it is more likely to help put you in the mood for sleep. Nutrition tips: • Limit caffeine close to bedtime. • Limit alcohol close to bedtime. • Avoid going to bed too hungry or too full. Deep fried, greasy, spicy foods take longer to digest. • Stay hydrated throughout the day. Improving the quality of your sleep can have positive mental and physical ripple effects. This leads to better health for you and your housemates and/or loved ones. Sandra Gentleman is a registered dietitian who is passionate about health and wellness. Airborne confident at BCs WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

The Alberni Airborne Volleyball Club is ready for more and is looking to make a move in the world. The 10-player community club is competing in the volleyball provincial championships with 55 other teams this weekend in Abbotsford. The Airborne has already set a goal in advance of the tourney. “We want to place at the bottom of the first tier or the top of the second,” coach Julie Anderson said. The team has worked its way up from the bottom of the volleyball rankings. “We’ve got a mountain to climb but

‘In practices they look amazing...’ – Julie Anderson we’re at the mountain now,” she said. The Airborne last competed at the Island Championships in Campbell River, where they played five games and placed third out of five teams. It was a watershed moment for the club. “They played aggressively and showed really good defense,” Anderson said. “Nanaimo and Comox put the ball out a lot because of their defense.” The team has been working on tandems, X’s and quicks in

Server Chelsea Charlesworth has been put through her paces honing her serving game and will be counted on this weekend. “She’s a quick learner and has a good athletic mind,” Anderson said. “And she makes our hitters up their game.” Anderson sees the biggest intangible — confidence — taking hold. “In practices they look amazing but in games they freeze up. I’m seeing less of that now,” she said. “When they master confidence they’ll rise in the rankings because that is what makes them place.” reporter@albernivalleynews.com

Smith off to five-pin nats SUSAN QUINN ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

Bantam bowler Cooper Smith is in St. John’s, Newfoundland this weekend competing in the 2012 Youth Bowling Canada 5 Pin National Championships. Smith won a gold medal at the provincial championships in Langley last month to earn a spot at the Canadian finals. It was the third step in what youth bowlers refer to as the “four steps to stardom.” Smith also won his local and regional championships this year, his final in the bantam division. This is the first time Rainbow Lanes has had a YBC youth bowler compete at the nationals in 53 years, owner Dave

Rutherford said. Special Olympics bowlers have competed nationally from Port Alberni. Smith practiced frequently leading

up to his trip to the nationals; he left Wednesday morning with his family. Smith, 10, began bowling about five years ago, explained

his mother, Tina Smith. “He’s a natural at it,” Tina Smith said. “He never gets frazzled,” his mother Tina Smith said.

Proteau plays PNGA Cup SUSAN QUINN ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

Port Alberni amateur golfer Christina Proteau kicks off her season this weekend at the Pacific Northwest Golf Association Cup at Gorge Vale Golf Club in Victoria. Proteau is hoping to extend her winning streak from last

season, and intends to return to LPGA qualifying school in the fall. Proteau is one of 12 British Columbia Golf members playing in the PNGA Cup, which started May 3. The annual Ryder Cup formatted event is a team competition between British Columbia Golf and the Idaho, Oregon and

Washington state golf associations. Proteau will be playing in the women’s mid-amateur division. Jackie Little, also of Port Alberni, qualified for the senior women’s amateur division but is awaiting surgery and bowed out of the competition. Little is still dealing with

injuries sustained when she was hit by a car in December 2010. Proteau said she is planning her year so it culminates with Q-school. “This year I’m planning for it and plaing in tournaments leading up to it... Hopefully they will help me achieve it, she said.

Joe Dvorak fought a valiant fight with cancer but succumbed on April 29. He will be remembered for his ready smile and willingness to lend a hand. He was a dedicated Lion’s Club member as well as being one of those handsome men who served tea and coffee at Sunshine Club events. Lives are richer from having known him. Donations to the Canadian Cancer Society in his name would be appreciated.
