and Morrison Subdivision are being reopened to trafÂżc today. The lock blocks and several pumps will remain on Wallinger so that the City can mobilize quickly should the water levels rise again. “We are asking residents in Morrison Subdivision to leave the sandbags in place until the spring run off is complete,â€? adds McRae. Damage assessments are underway on those homes affected by the Ă€ooding and small clean up kits are available at the City’s public works yard to assist affected residents as they begin clean up efforts. The City is compiling data to submit to the Provincial Regional Emergency Operations Centre (PREOC). The PREOC gathers information from all events in the region and submits that to Victoria. Victoria will then determine if the Kimberley Ă€ooding is eligible for Disaster Financial Assistance. If it is deemed eligible, the Province would work directly with affected homeowners. The evacuation alert was issued a week ago and a total of 11 homes were evacuated leaving 33 people in temporary lodging at the peak of the event.

Dump carbon tax, says Bill Bennett

ince’s greenhouse gas emissions. The government has committed to one more increase in the carbon
tax on July 1, which will add about a cent to the 5.56-cent tax on a litre of gasoline.

By Tom Fletcher Black Press The B.C. government should quit pretending it can inĂ€uence global climate and scrap the carbon tax on fossil fuels as soon as possible, Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett said Monday. Bennett called for the move in debate of an NDP motion to relieve hospitals, colleges and universities of the obligation to purchase carbon offsets for their fuel use. The B.C. Liberal government has already offered rebates to the province’s 60 public school districts to offset their mandatory payments this year, while it reviews the carbon tax program. Bennett, a former B.C. Liberal energy minister, clariÂżed that he was expressing his own opinion, and not attempting to speak for the government or party. He said it would take time to phase the carbon tax out, and there would be costs associated with the income tax cuts that have been phased in at the same time to keep it revenue neutral to the government. “In fact, I would go a little further and say that the whole policy regime that’s based on the notion that the B.C. government can do something about the amount of human-caused carbon dioxide going into the atmosphere should be rethought – again, in my opinion,â€? Bennett told the legislature. He said Canada’s carbon emissions represent two per cent of all human sources, and B.C.’s
emissions are roughly one tenth of that. NDP environment critic Rob Fleming began the debate arguing that colleges, universities and hospitals should keep the money paid in carbon offsets to improve the fuel efÂżciency of their operations, rather than pay it to the PaciÂżc Carbon Trust for distribution to other greenhouse gas reduction projects in industry. Fleming said carbon offsets will cost public

Think about that Sunday meal – roast, veggies, mashed potatoes and gravy – and now imagine the meal without the potatoes. Not the same, is it? Potatoes have been a staple on our dinner tables for decades, so why not think about planting your own this season? Potatoes are very forgiving and can grow in virtually all soil types. For best results however, pick a sunny location and add as much rich, organic soil as possible. This is especially important if the soil is extremely clay like. Potatoes like a neutral or even a slightly acidic soil, so to obtain good growth with fewer or no scabs on your potatoes do a pH test. In most of our area the soil is high in pH and our potatoes beneďŹ t greatly from adding some sulphur to the soil. Experienced gardeners will also recommend that you rotate the location of your potatoes in your garden to help with nutrient deďŹ ciencies and pests. There are many different varieties to choose from, starting with tried and true classics, such as Russet Burbank or Yukon Gold. However, there are also new gourmet varieties that can bring some excitement to your table, from ďŹ ngerling style Banana Potatoes to deep purple coloured Russian Blue Potatoes and the Nicola Potato. Nicola is an early yellow potato with a very low rating on the glycemic index, making them perfect for people who need to watch their blood sugar levels. Potatoes are usually rated fairly high on the index, which means that after you eat them, the carbohydrates in the potatoes cause a spike in your blood sugar levels. For example, a baked Russet Potato has a ranking of 111 on the glycemic index and the Nicola comes in at only 58. Potato tubers can be cut to allow for more plants. It is recommended that a minimum of two eyes are left on the tuber that is to be planted. As well, when cutting the tubers, do so, and leave them sit to allow the cut to scab or harden off before planting, generally 12-24 hours. Potatoes can be grown in almost any large container, provided good drainage is available. Just remember if you are planting potatoes in containers, use good potting soil and feel free to add some organic matter to it to make it a little heavier. As well a slow release fertilizer is a good idea, as they are heavy feeders. When growing potatoes in containers it is important to keep them moist, but not soaking wet. Consistent moisture helps form uniform sized potatoes. When ďŹ rst planting the potatoes only cover with 3-4 inches of your soil. Once your potatoes have grown to about 6â€?, you are going to hill them by adding some soil over the plants. Add about 2â€? carefully to avoid breaking the plants. Leave at least 2/3 of the plant with leaves sticking out of the soil. Keep repeating this process as your plant grows. You can begin harvesting potatoes once they have owered or when the plant dies back in the fall. If transplanting potatoes from a container into a spot in the garden, do so before they ower, for the best potato production. With the trend of today being smaller yards, container gardening is growing in popularity. Now instead of only owers, throw some spuds in there and enjoy the beneďŹ ts. Kids love to see where dinner came from! Submitted by Shannon

Robotics and Mount Baker students Four Mount Baker students attended the BC Provincial Skills Canada competition in Abbotsford on April 18, Conner Zhukrousky in the welding challenge and Wade Penson, William Chung, and Mitch Kroeker in robotics. Connor won Âżrst in the Regional Skills competition in order to represent the Kootenays at the Provincial level.
The Robotics challenge was taken up by few schools in the province, so there was no regional competition. Teams received the 19 page challenge in September, to build a remote-control robot that can perform a speciÂżc task, this year called “Panning for Gold.â€? A team of students at Mt. Baker, under the guidance of teacher Bill
Walker, took up the challenge and worked through the fall and winter to design, build, and reÂżne their machine. Students this year went over and above the challenge and actually used a micro-processor to automate some systems on their robot. The three members of the team who travelled to the provincial competition impressed the orga-
nizers with their design and, after many hard fought rounds, won a Silver medal. The skills and material required were complex and varied, and the students accessed resources in the community to assist them. Thanks to all the organizations that helped them and a special thank-you to John Milner of John Milner Reels for his time and expertise.

It’s never too late to return to school.â€? Returning to Learning takes place on Tuesday, May 8 from 4 to 6 pm in the Cafeteria of the Cranbrook Campus. Five remain in cupcake wars Submitted
Cranbrook Cupcake Wars is a community cupcake baking competition, which was opened to Kootenay residents of all ages this past April. Only three weeks after opening the competition, Cranbrook Cupcake Wars had received 42 registrations. The competition has been a positive event for the community. “Local businesses really supported the idea of a competition which brought community together. Local media helped us spread the word. Now families are helping one another design and create the perfect cupcake, said Danielle Cardozo, owner of Crumbs Cakery and Creator of Cranbrook Cupcake Wars. When asked how she felt about the community response, Sandy Smith, realtor with Royal Lepage East Kootenay said, “The community response was incredible! We had no idea it would be this
big. It’s so nice to see community and family members supporting one another. We will de¿nitely be doing it again next year! In addition to being a competition, Crumbs & Smith charged a onetime $10.00 entry fee. They raised a total of $400.00, which was donated to the Canadian Cancer Society Relay for Life. Now that there are
only Âżve contestants left, the judges will meet once per month. Each month, one contestant will be eliminated, until the Cupcake Champion is announced on September 7th, 2012. Follow along with Cranbrook Cupcake Wars, in the Kootenay Advertiser, on the Âżrst Friday of each month, or by visiting www.cranbrookcakes.com

Since July, 2011, BC has had a team of people working on ways to make government and government information more accessible and more useful to people. We now have a formal policy that requires efforts to achieve more openness and transparency by all ministries and those efforts are now being recognized nationally. We amended the Freedom of Information & Privacy Protection Act which has resulted in government sharing more information with citizens and more opportunities for the public to participate in decisions that make a difference in their lives. We also made available through our DataBC more than 2,600 datasets for use by business and individuals. The Institute of Public Administration of Canada recently awarded the silver medal to the BC Government for “showing major organizational transformation and outstanding performance in improving access for the public to government information. The BC Government placed second in Canada out of nearly 100 submissions. See www.ipac.ca for details.

Working for the health of a nation This year’s theme for National Nursing Week is a continuation of the campaign “Nursing: The Health of a Nation”. Without nurses, we would suffer through longer waits at our publicly funded health institutions,
our elderly and bedridden would be forced to endure the agony of clinic waiting rooms, and our children and teens would know a lot less about how to keep in good health. Sponsored by the Canadian Nurses

Association, National Nursing Week is a celebration of those who work in public health clinics, hospitals and clinics, and private and home-care organizations. CNA president Judith Shamian says it is a time to “acknowledge and celebrate nursing — a profession in which going above and beyond is a daily occurrence.” The CAN represents just over 145,000 registered nurses who work on the front lines and behind the scenes. Not only do they assist physicians in administering direct care, they work to educate community members about hygiene, safe sex practices, disease control, and disease prevention. They are the front-line care givers in hospital emergency rooms,
medical clinics, learning institutions, and homes for the elderly. In many of Canada’s remote northern communities, often the only health care practitioner who lives onsite and treats people is a registered nurse or nurse practitioner. These women and men are all-in-one: they deal with emergencies, take care of vaccination programs, educate the public about health and reproductive issues, and of course they often serve as counsellor-friends to community members. This year, let’s all ¿nd a way to recognize the nurses who work hard to make our healthcare system accessible and ef¿cient.
It’s time again to put on the chaps and spurs for the Cranbrook Dodge Bull-A-Rama and Dance to be held at the Civic Centre in Kimberley on May 5.
This year’s event features bull riding, boys steer riding and a perennial favourite– mutton busting for kids aged 3 to 5. “We started last year,”

said Guy Thompson, coordinator. “It’s a great family outing.” He said that as with last year, the group is bringing in bulls from Trail, where the event has been going strong for the past 11 years. Thompson also noted that the competition should be up for grabs this year as last year’s winner in the boys steer riding competition, Riley Claypool, from Cranbrook, has moved on to the Canadian ¿nals in Edmonton. First Nations scholar and elder to speak at College of the Rockies
PHOTO SUBMITTED
Dr. E. Richard Atleo. Submitted Well-known First Nations scholar, speaker and elder, Dr. E. Richard Atleo, will give a free presentation at College of the Rockies on Thursday, May 10. During his visit to
the region he will also spend time with the elders and members of the Ktunaxa Nation. “The Ktunaxa Nation would like to welcome Dr. Atleo to Ktunaxa Territory,” said Ktunaxa Nation Chair, Kathryn Teneese. “He is highly respected within the First Nation community and we are grateful for the opportunity the College has provided for our citizens and local residents to hear him speak.” Dr. Atleo will be exploring the themes put forth his books Tsawalk: A Nuu-chahnulth Worldview (UBC Press, 2004) and Principles of Tsawalk: An Indigenous Approach to Global Crisis. Tsawalk basically means “one”
and it encapsulates an understanding of the universe as an integrated and orderly whole, expressed as heshookish tsawalk—everything is one. In Tsawalk: A Nuuchah-nulth Worldview he introduces an ontology – a branch of metaphysics which deals with the nature of being – which is drawn from Nuu-chah-nulth origin stories. His latest publication, released November 2011, Principles of Tsawalk: An Indigenous Approach to Global Crisis, elaborates on some prag-
matic applications to the meaning of the ¿rst book. Dr. Atleo, whose Nuu-chah-nulth name is Umeek, is a hereditary chief who taught in the First Nations Studies Department at Malaspina University College from 1994 to 2004. He is currently Research Liaison at the University of Manitoba and Associate Adjunct Professor at the University of Victoria. He has served as co-chair of the Scienti¿c Panel for Sustainable Forest Practices in Clayquot Sound and is super-
vising a First Nations Root Garden Research Project on the West Coast. Over his varied career he has been a social worker, an elementary school teacher, a principal, a federal ministerial assistant, an assistant superintendent of education, a lecturer and Research Associate in Anthropology at UBC, and a visiting assistant professor of resource and environmental management at Simon Fraser University. At the completion of his doctorate he con-
ducted province-wide research into First Nations K-12 education in British Columbia. He has lectured at Nicolas Copernicus University and the University of Silesia in Poland as well as in Germany at Greifswald University, Luneberg University, and Urania, a Scienti¿c Society founded in Berlin in 1888. He has participated in cervical cancer research with the Vancouver Cancer Agency as well as been involved with Contemporary and Traditional Medicine with a focus upon HIV Aids in Gha-
na, Africa. His presentation at College of the Rockies is free and takes place at 7 pm in the Lecture Theatre (Room 250) on Thursday, May 10. Seating is limited so attendees are urged to come early. Dr. Atleo’s books will be on sale at the event and he will be pleased to sign them following his presentation. of services will make it easier for clients to have liquor service at catered events, which will not only help support the industry, but also strengthen B.C.’s tourism appeal. “This change just makes sense. It will give catering companies the ability to better serve their clients, boost tourism opportunities and support job creation in the hospitality sector,” said Minister Rich Coleman. As well, the change will create a licensing framework that will allow dedicated catering businesses and existing licensed establishments - such as restaurants, hotels and conference centres - to provide liquor at catered events held at offsite locations. “Caterers are an important component of B.C.’s $10-billion food service industry and this is very welcome news. This legislation also creates more opportunities for existing hotels and restaurants. Our catering members and their clients have been advocating for this change for quite some time, and we applaud the government for listening and making these changes,” said Mark von Schellwitz, vice-president, Western Canada, Canadian Restaurant and Foodservices Association. Currently, people hosting an event serving liquor in B.C. need to get a special occasion licence, take the Serving-it-Right course, purchase and transport the liquor and accept liability for liquor service at the event. Catering companies cannot handle these responsibilities on behalf of their clients. According to a release from the Province, the change will bring B.C. in line with every other province, support job creation and allow the tourism and hospitality sector to compete more effectively as a destination location for conferences, conventions and special events. Before the legislation is implemented, consultation will occur with the catering industry and hospitality associations, as well as with local governments and authorities.

Cyberbullying can follow you everywhere–but you can stop it Submitted The College of the Rockies was the location of the free presentationmg hosted by the Canadian Foundation of University Women (CFUW). Constable Schlatter shared the details of what Cyber Bullying is, its effects and how to avoid it, and how to overcome it. Constable Schlatter’s experience in dealing with youth was evident in the way she was able to address all the ages in the audience. Cyberbullying follows you everywhere. It’s far reaching and it’s never gone; it’s always there. You may remove a photo, but it’s still out there on other’s computers. A Cyberbully is purposely trying to hurt a person’s feelings. They are not seeing the victim?s emotions so it’s easier to write something that is hurtful. Rumours can be spread, negative comments, and threats result in serious consequences including suicide. It’s all about control, the power factor. Cyberbullying is not illegal, but it can lead to criminal behaviour; Criminal Harassment, Uttering Threats to harm, kill or maim. Defamation can be a civil court matter; slander for the spoken word, libel for the written word. Cyber Bullying occurs in the workplace, when volunteering and in schools; you are not alone If students receive death threats, intimidation, or extortion attempts or any evidence of sexual exploitation they must take it seriously, and report it to an adult. Sexting is child pornography. If they are not comfortable going to the police or their parent, they should go to their principal, a trusted adult or even a friend. Don?t over react but don?t under react. The police need the evidence! If you have a youth in your life, be proactive. Talk to them about responsible technology, inappropriate language, sending pictures and the need to ¿nd an adult to con¿de in. Make sure they know
they will feel safe after they’ve told you. Are they feeling they are at risk? How are they handling it on an emotional level? And the police need the evidence! What to do when you get cyber-bullied. S Stop B Block it and do not reply S Save the entry and print it R Report It to an adult you trust. Don’t be a bystander! If you have a friend who
is being cyber bullied, befriend the victim. Some areas are setting up Anti-Bullying Projects to increase awareness, and to encourage students to protect each other. Make Cyber Bullies know its not Cool! If you wouldn?t say it why would you print it. For further information check out the web, under Cyber Bullying Public Service Announcements.

City launches new water conservation education campaign Submitted ‘Make Wiser Water Choices’ – that’s the message this summer as the City of Cranbrook kicks off its 2012 Water Conservation Public Education program today. “I am excited for this year’s initiative and hope to continue to build on the great
public response we had around our water program the past two years,” says Chris Zettel, Corporate Communications Of¿cer for the City of Cranbrook. “We have an article series in the works about our wastewater system, building on a very informative article series on the City’s watershed in 2011; a water con-

the City’s website today. Three signi¿cant key objectives of the 2012 Water Conservation public education campaign include creating and maintaining public awareness of the importance of use water wisely; raising the pro¿le of Public Works by educating the public on what is done to provide each of us in the City
with clean, clear potable drinking water and reduce overall water consumption city-wide. Over the course of the summer, the City will be providing information about wise water use through the local media, the City’s website and through a couple of information booths at the Cranbrook Farmer’s Market. Rosie, the Fire
Hydrant will also return in her role as the Water Conservation Mascot and the very popular Low Flow Toilet Rebate program also returns. “We had great success with last year’s education program overall and want to continue spreading the message about making wiser water choices,” Zettel says. “We are not here
Give your mom a night out this Mother’s Day No mom should have to slave over a hot stove on Mother’s Day, so why not whisk her away from the kitchen and take her to a restaurant. After all, every mother
has the right to a welldeserved break! Choosing the right restaurant will depend on the type of food your mother enjoys, but by taking into account her
general interests as well, you can add an element of surprise. Does she love music? Choose a restaurant that serves good food as well as live music. Your mom likes to stay in shape and eat healthy? A restaurant serving vegetar-

Most restaurants are prepared to welcome them and even have special children’s menus for the occasion. Finally, remember that the ultimate gift to a mother is some quality time spent with her family, so make this gifted mother of yours supremely happy. During the meal listen to her, make her laugh, take care of her. Mothers are precious — and we only have one after all!

In addition, Curves announces the inaugural National Curves Day celebration, which will occur annually on the Thursday following Mother’s Day. National Curves Day will celebrate Curves’ mission of strengthen-
ing women; honor its members and others who have already taken responsibility for their health; and provide opportunities for those who haven’t yet but would like to do so. Curves clubs provide support, camaraderie, a complete diet and ¿tness solution and a sense of common purpose that grows from an informed concern for women’s health. Curves of Cranbrook will hold a week-long
Open House event to encourage interested women to check out the club, pick up free health information, ask questions, get a free ¿tness assessment and take advantage of the “one million free 30-day memberships” offer. Visitors may also sign up to attend a special program on National Curves Day, Thursday, May 17, featuring messages from health experts and fun activities designed to raise awareness of steps women can take to get healthy.
Curves International aims to give away one million free 30-day memberships at their Curves women’s gyms throughout the United States and Canada during the event.
