Pay it forward, Hansen tells MLAs By Tom Fletcher Black Press

Wheelchair ambassador Rick Hansen visited the British Columbia legislature April 30, as part of his province-wide relay marking 25 years since the completion of his Man in Motion world tour. He presented “difference maker” medals to MLAs, spoke to a reception and then was invited to make a speech to the legislature. The medals represent gratitude, celebration and inspiration for those who have helped their communities, Hansen told MLAs, explaining what that meant to him once his 40,000-kilometre wheelchair journey was completed. “To be a young kid from Williams Lake and to be inspired to pay it forward. To move from a period and a place of despair and to see possibilities and know that I’ve been able to get there on the backs of this province, family friends and community. A healthy and inclusive place where a kid can overcome adversity and then be inspired to wing around the world.” Hansen began his 25th anniversary relay in Newfoundland last summer. The relay

Rick Hansen entered B.C. on March 19 and is passing through 127 communities before concluding in downtown Vancouver on May 22. “To come back 25 years later and to see the kind of response that still is there, and the progress that’s been made on the part of local champions and difference makers who have really made that possible, those are emotional moments and truly inspiring.” Hansen began his Man in Motion World Tour in March 1985, visiting 34 countries and raising $26 million for spinal cord research. Since 1988, the Rick Hansen Foundation has leveraged that initial effort to $252 million invested in research, accessibility projects and quality-oflife initiatives.

The Relay for Life event in Centennial Park is a fun, family event for many, but it’s also an important day for people to cheer on those battling the disease or recognize a cancer survivor or a lost loved one. Perhaps, most importantly, it raises funds for research and prevention activities by the Canadian Cancer Society. Local Relay for Life leadership chair Alaina Fryer says teams have been slower than usual to sign on this year, and this puts the event at risk. While some have called expressing their intent to put a team together, many haven’t yet registered, she explains. “We need more to step up and put together a team. Without the teams to fundraise, we would not have a relay.” The relay is planned for Centennial Park on June 9 from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. One change this year is the relay teams won’t have as many scheduled activities keeping them so busy, as Fryer explains organizers don’t want to restrict their time. “People coming out to show support is what we need. Even if you raise $20, it supports the cause.” This year’s allvolunteer relay is otherwise shaping up for a great family day, she notes, and includes a few new twists to the usual fun, entertainment and games. Rob Fry will once again provide music and entertainment, including the Cariboo Idols, and other groups and bands yet to be confirmed, but are under discussion. Tom McIntosh of Lake of the Trees Bible Camp will once again

100 Mile House Library receives Log Building Award By Monika Paterson The Northern Building Awards were given out in Prince George on April 26 in celebration of the best in building projects in northern British Columbia during the past two years. There were 25 commercial nominees from all over northern B.C., from 100 Mile to Prince George, and from Terrace to Fort St. John and Fort St. James. Awards were awarded in the commercial/residential, industrial, renovation/restoration, wood/log buildings and retail categories. The 100 Mile House Branch Library received an award for the commercial buildings category in wood/log buildings. Cariboo Regional District chair Al Richmond accepted the award on behalf of the CRD board. Noting the committee was very impressed when viewing the building, Richmond says he was very happy and pleased with the award, as it is a testament to local craftsmanship.

Donating a car, changing a life Psalm 23 Transition Society is reaching out to help one family with the gift of a vehicle on May 19. Executive director Marvin Declare says Psalm 23 wants to share with the community the benefits of its Donate a Vehicle Program, knowing it can change somebody’s life for the Better. “We are currently inspecting the vehicle for any issues, so we can make the van road worthy and safe so the recipient won’t have to worry about repairs.” Every aspect of this used vehicle is being checked out and repairs will be made as needed, he says, adding all of the labour on the vehicle is being donated by Albert Able, a student at Psalm 23 Training Centre. All detailing work inside and out have been donated by Sunrise Ford, while the broken window, the rear glass replacement, parts and all labour have been provided by 100 Mile Glass. The 1994 sevenseat Dodge Caravan SE van will be donated to a worthy single

No-show for public hearing on containers No one showed up for a public hearing for input on a bylaw to define and impose limits and restrictions on shipping container use in the district. The hearing was held just prior to the regular District of 100 Mile House council meeting on April 10, and council subsequently gave third reading to approve the bylaw. Until May 15, Psalm 23 is encouraging community members to submit a brief essay explaining why their nominee deserves the car. Essays should be no more than 500 words. Community members may nominate themselves, their friends, neighbours, or anyone they know who deserves and would be in need of a used vehicle in great condition.

Each participant should include their full name, address, phone number and e-mail address. The nominees must have a valid driver’s licence and be able to acquire automobile insurance. Send your nomination letters to psalm23society@ shaw.ca with the subject being “Car Giveaway.” They can also be mailed to Box 387 Clinton, BC V0K 1K0. Psalm 23 will be accepting nominations until May 15. The vehicle will be given away at Sunrise Ford on May 19 at noon.

Raising funds for a safe dry grad celebration was the reason Pizza Day started in 1989. It is a joint effort of BC Ambulance Service, the hospital’s emergency department, Dr. Franky Mah and his office, 100 Mile House Fire-Rescue, the RCMP, the BC Coroners Office and volunteers who have either experienced an accident or had their lives affected by an alcohol- or drugrelated motor-vehicle incident. Pledges that are redeemed by May 22 will be entered into a draw for a gift basket or prize. All contri-

butions come with a receipt for tax purposes. People are still able to donate by going at the Wolf Radio station, located behind the 100 Mile Community Hall on 3rd Street. “We are holding an information night and looking for new participants, speakers and volunteers for the 2012/13 P.A.R.T.Y. program,” says Scott. The Louisiana Hayride was a live radio show, broadcast over KWKH Radio in Shreveport, Louisiana and ran successfully from 1948-1960. It was instrumental in establishing the careers of such artists as Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline, Marty Robbins, Jim Reeves, Roy Orbison and many more artists. Our rendition in story and song, takes you back to those days and that live radio show. Find out why Roy Orbison wore dark sunglasses and where and when the phrase “Elvis has left the building” was first spoken. Great stories, great songs. Graduation ceremonies going ahead Graduation ceremonies will occur for the graduating class of 2011/12, says School District 27 (SD27) superintendent Diane Wright. However, as a result of the British Columbia Teachers’ Federation (BCTF) action plan, teachers will not participate in graduation ceremonies outside of instructional time. SD 27 and secondary school principals are working together and adjusting plans for the ceremonies, she adds. Meanwhile, teachers will plan and provide assistance during instructional hours. To ensure the class of 2011/12 experiences its graduation ceremonies, Wright says SD 27 is fortunate that many volunteers have offered to help. She adds the school district will send an update confirming the graduation ceremony plans for each school next week.

B.C. allows alcohol in movie theatres By Tom Fletcher Black Press

The B.C. Liberal government has created a new liquor licence that allows theatres to serve alcohol during movie showings. Rich Coleman, the cabinet minister responsible for British Columbia liquor and gambling policy, says the change will get rid of red tape for theatres that could get a licence to serve alcohol for live events, but couldn’t show movies in the same place. The new licence will allow theatres to serve drinks in the lobby, but patrons won’t be able to take drinks to their movie seats unless the room is adults-only. Coleman said unlike the stands at a hockey game or out in a welllit lobby, it’s difficult for operators to see

if minors are sneaking drinks in a dark theatre. A multiplex cinema now has the option of designating one theatre for adults only and serving drinks, an approach that has caught on in other jurisdictions along with larger seats and tables. The licence would also cover an adults-only lounge adjacent to the theatre. Other theatres that have live shows will be able to take part in film festivals without having to close their bar or apply for a new licence. “People are trying to save the older theatres, where it’s just a single-screen operation, and trying to have two types of business in order to basically survive and make those older traditional heritagetype theatres work,” Coleman said.

Ontario, Alberta and Manitoba already have similar licences for movie theatres. Jeremy Bator, president of the Motion Picture Theatre Association of B.C., praised the move. “These changes will have a positive

impact on so many levels, including increased jobs, a better guest experience and a more level playing field in the increasingly competitive landscape of entertainment in Canada.” Matthew Gibbons,

president of the Vogue Theatre in Vancouver, said his heritage theatre is now mainly a live performance venue, and the new licence will make it easier to take part in the annual Vancouver International Film Festival.

PSALM 23 Transition Society Dealing with addictions?

WE CAN HELP

DONATING A CAR

CHANGING A LIFE Psalm 23 Transition Society feels so blessed by the Cariboo community that they want to give back to it. This Canadian non-profit charitable organization is doing so by reaching out and helping one family on Saturday, May 19, 2012 with the gift of a vehicle. Psalm 23 knows all about making a difference in people’s lives as they run the Training Centre at 59 Mile for those struggling with different forms of addictions. The vehicle is currently being inspected for any issues so we can make the van roadworthy and safe so the recipient won’t have to worry about repairs. Every aspect of this used vehicle is being checked out and repairs will be made as needed. All detailing work inside-and-out has been graciously donated by Sunrise Ford. With a broken window, the rear glass replacement, parts and all labour have been generously provided by 100 Mile Glass. All of the labour on the vehicle is being donated by Albert Able (a student at Psalm 23 Training Centre). The 1994, 7-seat, Dodge Caravan SE van will be donated to a worthy single-mother or father with at least two children who may be struggling in the down economy and could truly benefit from this gift. Until May 15, 2012, Psalm 23 is encouraging the community to submit a brief essay explaining why their nominee deserves the car. Essays should be no more than 500 words. Community members may nominate themselves, their friends, neighbours, anyone they personally know who deserves and would be in need of a used vehicle in great condition. Each participant should include their full name, address, phone number and email address. The nominees also must have a valid driver’s license and be capable of acquiring automobile insurance. Community members who wish to make a nomination should send their letters of nominations to…

psalm23society@shaw.ca with the subject being “Car Giveaway.” The community can also mail their nominations to Box 387 Clinton, BC V0K 1K0.

Psalm 23 will be accepting nominations until May 15, 2012. The winning nominee will be chosen by a panel consisted of community members from Sunrise Ford, 100 Mile Glass, Psalm 23’s Marvin & Shelley Declare and representatives from any other business that donates to this project on May 15th. The vehicle will be given away at Sunrise Ford on Saturday, May 19 at noon. If you would like to participate in Psalm 23’s Donate a Vehicle program please email or call Marvin Declare (604-870-5616). As a charity, Psalm 23 can offer a tax receipt for your donation. With our ‘Donate a Vehicle Program’ we are able to receive trucks, cars, farm vehicles, motorcycles, ATVs and boats. Please consider donating today into our Training Programs. For more information on Psalm 23 please contact us. (www.psalm23society.com)

Watch out for trains coming down the track Playing around railway tracks can result in tragic consequences. In 2011, 42 people were seriously injured and 70 people were killed after being struck at road-rail crossings or trespassing on railway tracks across Canada. Rail Safety Week, which runs from April 30 to May 6, is a good time to remind ourselves about safe behaviour around tracks and trains. Here are three important tips to always keep in mind: • Just because you haven’t seen a train at a crossing recently, doesn’t mean there is not one approaching. Always listen for warning bells and whistles, and make sure you check both ways before crossing. When on foot or bicycle, make sure to turn off your head-

phones. Children should always be supervised when around rail crossings. • Pay attention to the “crossbuckâ€? signs that indicate a roadway/railway crossing. Some busier crossings also have lights and bells or gates. Never drive around lowered gates; it’s illegal and potentially deadly. If you suspect a signal is malfunctioning, call the 1-800 number posted on or near the crossing signal or contact your local law enforcement agency. • Railway tracks may look like a great place to ride your bike or take a walk, but, trespassing on the railway’s private property is illegal and unsafe. An average freight train travelling at 100 km/h requires more than a kilometre to stop.
