Mills to complete WorkSafe inspection by Wednesday By Phillip Woolgar THE HERALD
reporter@merrittherald.com
WorkSafe B.C. has ordered mills in Merritt and throughout the province to complete a full inspection of their operations after an explosion on April 23 killed two people and destroyed the Lakeland Mills plant in Prince George. David Gray, executive at Aspen Planers Ltd. in Merritt, said staff will complete a full inspection
prior to the Wednesday (May 9) deadline. “It doesn’t change our business,” he said. “We clean up and we do all those things and we certainly welcome [the mandatory inspection] and we hope we can learn some lessons from it. “If the inspection hasn’t happened, it will happen shortly.” The Prince George explosion is the second deadly B.C. mill explosion in three months. Both explosions were at mills

processing pine-beetle wood. “A percentage of our cut is pine-beetle,” Gray said of Merritt’s mill. The B.C. Forest Industry will now set out a task force to determine the risks related to dust explosions. Greg Stewart, Lakeland Mills president, said on the company’s website, “We’re devastated by the news of this incident and our thoughts are with our employees and their families.
“All of our attention right now is focused on ensuring our employees and their families receive the care they need.” The Lakeland sawmill explosion killed shift supervisor Alan Little and sent another 10 workers to hospital for treatment of severe burns and smoke inhalation. Thirteen employees were treated in hospital and then released. Another 25 employees weren’t injured. The mill explosion at about
9:40 p.m., caused the walls to fall. Workers struggled to escape the debris and dense smoke. The fire that followed was too intense for firefighters to battle, so the department allowed it to burn out. In January, two workers died and 19 were injured after the Babine Forest Products mill in Burns Lake exploded. The mill is located about 230 kilometres northwest of Prince George.

Safety efforts increase after explosions From Page 1 The Council of Forest Industries stated there is no evidence of a connection between the two explosions. “This is a significant collaborative effort to ensure that B.C.’s wood products manufacturers are operating to the absolute highest standards,” said West Fraser CEO Hank Ketcham. “We look forward to working with our industry colleagues to advance these important initiatives.” Don Kayne, Canfor CEO, said the council aims for transparency with employees and the government in order to, “identify new combustion hazards or means of improving safety procedures. “We have taken every opportunity to increase our efforts in safety since the serious incidents at Lakeland and Babine and this joint initiative is a next and very important step.” The council has set out four tasks: • Quantify combustion risks

related to dust from both green and dry wood • Identify best practices for dust mitigation from other industries that have issues related to dust in manufacturing. • Develop an industry-wide, audible standard that can be utilized to provide independent assurance of mill safety. • Undertake outreach to all wood products manufacturing companies in B.C. to create an industry-wide approach to safety that is inclusive of both large and small operations. WorkSafe B.C. is investigating both blasts. Both mills were processing pine beetle-infested wood. However, B.C. mills have processed that type of wood for the last 10 years. Officials from Ardew Wood Products Ltd. and Tolko Industries Ltd. in Merritt didn’t return Herald phone calls by press time. WorkSafe plans to investigate Merritt mills by Wednesday.

Merritt couple competes in Kamloops Amazing Race By Phillip Woolgar THE HERALD
reporter@merrittherald.com
A big bowl of hot food — that didn’t really look like food but was edible nonetheless — was just one of the obstacles that stood in the way of a Merritt couple, as they looked to win the Amazing Race in Kamloops. On April 28, Alex Grebenyuk and Katrina Pascua ate, golfed and pleaded their way to an 11thplace finish in a highstakes race. “My shirt won the race,” Grebenyuk said, referring to a mixup at the beginning of the competition when another team received
the team’s ‘Yogi and Boo Boo’ shirt. “Really, I just feel glad that it feels like a part of me won the Amazing Race.” Grebenyuk, a Merritt radio personality and play-byplay announcer for the BCHL’s Merritt Centennials, said he is a die-hard Amazing Race fan. So, when the opportunity came up in midApril after three of the 24 teams dropped out of the competition, Grebenyuk and Pascua sprinted to register as contestants. Grebenyuk said his team lost for two reasons — first, his was the only team not from Kamloops and, sec-

ond, the other teams cheated. “It doesn’t make sense that we weren’t in the Top 10,” he said. “Katrina and I were one of only nine teams that didn’t skip a task.” The couple had to complete 10 tasks and each team that cheated would be penalized 20 minutes. For every failed task, a team was docked two hours. But Yogi and Boo Boo were only one of a few teams that
completed all the tasks without cheating or skipping. When they finished, they were ranked in ninth place and only about 1.5 hours behind the firstplace team. The “cheating teams,” however, were given an opportunity to return to a task for another attempt. “It wasn’t fair,” Grebenyuk said. “If we’d known we could do that, then we would have skipped some of the
tasks, finished the race, and then returned to each task to complete them.” He said organizers admitted there would need to be changes to the race next year. This year, Pascua said her toughest challenge was pleading to locals to purchase two tickets to an Amazing Race banquet for $15 each. The money would go to the construction of a new park in Kamloops. “I had to go around everywhere and a lot of people were rude,” Pascua said. “I went into a restaurant and people there didn’t like me asking. I couldn’t find anyone and I knew Alex would be so
[angry].” She eventually found someone who worked at a local shop to purchase two tickets. The first-place team won a Caribbean Cruise from Florida, second won a stay in San Francisco and third-place won their choice of a spa or golf weekend in Banff. Each prize winner also received money for their trip. Each team paid $250 to enter. The Westsyde Community Development Society Absolute Amazing Race was intended to raise money for improvements to Centennial Park in Westsyde, Kamloops.

HERALD OPINION The price we pay If you’re like many Canadians, you spent the last weekend in April hunched in front of your home computer, surrounded by folders of paperwork and receipts trying to make the midnight income tax deadline. About two-thirds of Canadians who file a return will get money back, on average about $1,500. Another 21 per cent will have already paid from deductions the exact amount of taxes they owe, and 12 per cent will have to pay more. And while it sometimes feels like the government is always dipping its fingers into our pockets to extract our hard-earned dollars, Canadians aren’t as tax-burdened as we like to think. Total taxes, including income, sales, corporate, property and other taxes, account for 31 per cent of Canada’s economy. That’s almost three per cent less than the average for other industrialized countries. In France, Finland, Austria, Norway, Belgium, Italy, Sweden and Denmark, taxes add up to 42 to 48 per cent of their economies. Sure, Americans pay less tax than Canadians, but we don’t have to pull out our credit cards every time we visit the doctor or get an X-ray. The people of Greece, Portugal, Spain and Ireland also pay less tax, but given the financial crises crippling their economies, that’s unlikely to last. So as you await your refund, or the cheque you had to write to clear, consider it the price we pay for living in a stable, reliable country. – Black Press
NDP ramps up opposition, tanker debate sinks to new low
TOM FLETCHER B.C. VIEWS The B.C. NDP has ramped up its opposition to the proposed Northern Gateway oil pipeline. First the party formalized objections already expressed by NDP MLAs who have spoken at hearings held by the federal review panel along the B.C. coast. Leader Adrian Dix sent an 11-page letter to the
Publisher Kelly Hall publisher@ kamloopsthisweek.com
panel, then launched an attack on the B.C. Liberal government that emphasized the letter’s top objection. Why doesn’t Premier Christy Clark stand up to Ottawa and protest the abandonment of the long-standing “moratorium and exclusion zone” on oil tankers off B.C.’s north coast, Dix and NDP energy critic Rob Fleming demanded. Clark’s answer was the same one given for many years by federal and provincial governments. The 1972 federal “moratorium” was directed at offshore oil drilling, not tankers bound for B.C. A separate Canada-U.S. agreement in 1998 calls for U.S. tankers to avoid B.C.’s Inside Passage as they transport Alaska crude
oil to refineries in Washington state and further south. I asked Fleming for documentation that shows tankers are banned from B.C.’s north coast. He said it is “fragmented,” which means he doesn’t have any. Nor does the NDP’s heavily footnoted letter to the federal panel offer any source for this assertion. This argument flared up in 2006 after Methanex Corp. shut down its Kitimat methanol plant. Instead of shipping methanol out, a practice that was never questioned, it started bringing tankers into the Kitimat port loaded with a liquid natural gas by-product called condensate. From there it is sent by rail to Alberta to dilute oil sands crude. This process led to Enbridge’s

proposed double pipeline that would send condensate east and diluted crude west. The Dogwood Initiative, one of the multiple U.S.funded groups that now dominate B.C.’s environmental lobby, rose to protest these early condensate shipments, saying they violate a moratorium on tankers. Wrong, said Don Rodden, superintendent of environmental response for the Canadian Coast Guard Pacific Region. The 1972 moratorium “wouldn’t apply to vessels coming into Canadian ports like Kitimat,” Rodden told the Globe and Mail at the time. The Coast Guard would be the agency legally required to enforce such a tanker ban, if one existed.
As I’ve mentioned before, there are legitimate arguments against the Northern Gateway proposal. This tanker moratorium isn’t one of them. Then there is the hypocrisy and pro-U.S. bias that is so clearly evident in the manipulated B.C. debate. The Northern Gateway pipeline would generate as many as 350 tanker trips each year to and from Kitimat. More than twice that many tankers already sail each year through the Strait of Juan de Fuca, past the Gulf and San Juan Islands. Many are heading to refinery complexes at March Point and Cherry Point in Washington. Strangely, this U.S. traffic excites no protests. Some of the smaller tank-

ers come in to fill up from the Trans-Mountain pipeline in Burnaby, whose operator is preparing a bid for expansion. This attracts protests organized by people paid to oppose Alberta “tar sands” oil. Where do urban protesters think we get the gasoline and diesel fuel sold at B.C. filling stations? Do they think it’s all made at the little Chevron refinery in Burnaby? We could use a serious debate about how B.C. handles petroleum. Instead, we see factually inaccurate claims promoted by U.S. interests to attack Canadian crude only. Our opposition politicians and media mostly just go along for the ride. Tom Fletcher is legislative reporter and columnist for Black Press.

Gardeners looking for a bit of motivation or new ideas should mark their calendars to attend the Spring Garden Festival at the Baillie Property on May 26. The spring festival, which is the first of its kind presented by Communities in Bloom (CIB) in conjunction with the Baillie House, is meant to inspire both new and experienced gardeners at the beginning of the growing season, said Mischelle Pierce, CIB member. From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the spring festival will take place in the Baillie House garden and will feature various booths and demonstrations related to gardening. The festival theme will be “everything old is new again,” said Pierce, explaining that this includes recycling used items for art in the garden or getting back to the basics by growing vegetables or preserving food. “Basically, we’re trying to provide as much information as possible about gardening and how to start, and provide people with information about what is going on in the community,” said Pierce. The festival will include displays of garden art, a plant exchange, a TNRD booth about recycling, a Good Earth

Minimum wage pushed up in final phase By Phillip Woolgar

Minimum wage earners throughout Merritt joined a provincial celebration after the B.C. government pushed the lowest hourly earnings to $10.25 on May 1. The increase represents a $0.75 hike and $2.25 increase in the last year. It is the last of three stages Premier Christy Clark promised when she was sworn in as B.C.’s premier last March. According to Liz Touet, employment services co-ordinator for Community Futures Nicola Valley, few locals could be affected by the increase. “A lot of the employers, I find, pay more than the minimum wage,” she said. “A lot of the workers were probably at the new rate already.” She noted, however, that many in the service sector could be affected, but those jobs aren’t typically posted through CFNV.
were probably at the new rate already.’ —CFNV EMPLOYMENT SERVICES LIZ TOUET
Prior to the increase, provincial minimum wage was static at $8 per hour for nearly a decade. Minister of Labour, Citizens’ Services and Open Government Margaret MacDiarmid issued a statement saying: “British Columbians who made $8 per hour last year could now have more than an additional $4,000 in their pockets this year. That’s good news for individuals and families, and that’s good news for the economy.” According to Lucia Orser of the University of Victoria’s student society, more than half of the minimum wage earners are between 15 and 24 years old and are often students. “I’m very pleased with the increase,” she said.
“This increase in minimum wage will help to support them as they prepare and plan for funding their postsecondary education.” Minimum wage for liquor servers was raised to $9 in May and will stay at that level. These workers are presumed to make tip money. Cents sign 16-year-old Kamloops Storm forward The Merritt Centennials have announced the signing of 16-year-old forward Diego Cuglietta for the 2012-13 BCHL season. The 5’9”, 161 lbs. Cuglietti played last season for his hometown Kamloops Storm of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League. In 50 regular season games with the Storm, he totaled 13 goals and 25 assists for 38 points, and accumulated 74 penalty minutes. “Diego attended camp with us last year and we were excited to see how his 2011-12 season of Junior B hockey would progress,” said Cents head coach and GM Luke Pierce. “He made substantial strides during the year, and was one of his team’s best players in the playoffs (five goals and four assists in 12 playoff games).” Pierce went on to
add, “Diego has rounded out his game to the point where he can be successful in our program. He is a versatile centreman who is tenacious on pucks. He’ll add some offensive instincts to uor group. And he is a committed individual who will fit into our culture in Merritt.” All BCHL teams are required to have one 16-year-old player on their 21-player roster.
Diego Cuglietta
Brad Thiessen selected top BCHL player of his decade The British Columbia Hockey League announced last week the final results of fan voting for the top player from each decade of the league’s 50-year history. Goaltender Brad Thiessen, who played 13 regular season games and six playoff games with the Merritt Centennials back in 2005-6 was selected for the 2000s decade. The Aldergrove native also played for the Penticton Panthers and Vees, and the Prince George Spruce Kings during his four seasons in the BCHL. After finishing his Junior A hockey career, Thiessen went on to play for three years at Northeastern University. In his final NCAA season, 2008-9, he was selected Hockey East
Player of the Year, and was a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award. In the summer of 2009, the undrafted Thiessen signed with the Pittsburgh Penguins of the NHL, and joined their American Hockey League affiliate team in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Pennsylvania. On February 24, 2012, Brad Thiessen played his first NHL game for Pittsburgh, and registered his first win, 4-2 over the Columbus Blue Jackets. On March 7 of the same year, he recorded his second win in as many starts, 3-2 over the Toronto Maple Leafs. The other BCHL players of the decade, as voted by fans, are: 1960s – Bob Nystrom, Kelowna Rockets 1970s – Chad Campbell, Penticton Broncos 1980s – Brett Hull, Penticton Knights
BCHL ROUND-UP 1990s – Paul Kariya, Penticton Panthers. Fan voting began back in October, 2011 with a list of over 150 players. In November, the top 50 players in BCHL history were revealed as voted by the fans. Ten players were chosen from each of the five decades. From those groups, more fan voting was held to determine the top player of each decade.
Vees in deep trouble at RBC Cup The Penticton Vees’ storybook year may not have its expected ending. The heavily-favored BCHL and Doyle Cup champions have lost their first two games at the Royal Bank Cup national championships in Humboldt, Saskatchewan. Penticton lost 3-2 in overtime to the host
Broncos on Sunday night in their second RBC outing. Twentyfour hours earlier, the Vees were stunned 2-1 by the lightly-regarded Soo Thunderbirds of the Northern Ontario Hockey League. Wade Murphy scored both Penticton goals in the OT thriller against Humboldt. Michael Garteig has taken both losses between the pipes for the Vees. Pen’s next game is on Wednesday against the Woodstock Slammers.
Brad Thiessen played 19 games with the Merritt Centennials in the 2005-6 BCHL season (left). On February 24, of this year, he played his first game in net for the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins, a 4-2 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets. Ian Webster/Herald and highheelsandhockey.com

DID YOU KNOW ➣ "Hara kiri" is an impolite way of saying the Japanese word "seppuku" which means, literally, "belly splitting." ➣ The Basset Horn, a kind of alto clarinet, was named after its inventor -- a man named Horn. "Basset" is from "Basetto," or "little bass" in Italian.
TAURUS: Knuckle down, Taurus. Hard work is key to getting out of the pickle you’re in. A snide remark makes it clear that all is not right at home. Start poking around.
CAPRICORN: Shame on you, Capricorn. You get so caught up in your own troubles that you let down a friend. Work quickly to make amends. A debt is repaid. A Q U A R I U S : Budgetary issues can no longer be avoided. Take the time to sort them out, Aquarius, and make an effort to get ahead and stay ahead. A phone call stirs up controversy.
GEMINI: The emotional roller coaster ride you’ve been on comes to an end, leaving you calmer and more in control. Celebrate with a night on the town, Gemini.
PISCES: You like to help, but sometimes you go overboard, Pisces. Lend your ear to a friend, but don’t go out on a limb for them. This is their problem.
CANCER: Keep at it, Cancer. You’re on the verge of a breakthrough. A move you made some time ago backfires. Someone you least expect comes to your rescue.
ARIES: The solution you seek is near, Aries. It is not what you were hoping for, however, which may explain why you have yet to see it. Flowers bring cheer.
LEO: Hang on, Leo. Ditch that invite, and you’ll regret it. Yes, you’re busy, but this is one event you don’t want to miss. The contacts alone will make it worthwhile.
CROSSWORDS
REGIONAL EVENTS VIRGO: You’re too kind for your own good, Virgo. It’s ok to get angry now and then and let others know you’re not their rug to step on. A deadline is moved up. L I B R A : Yo u ’ r e usually on top of your game, but not this week, Libra. Give the reins to someone else and take a break. It will do you good. A fitness goal is reached. SCORPIO: Pack your bags, Scorpio. A loved one is about to whisk you away on the adventure of a lifetime. Don’t forget your camera. You’ll definitely want to capture what’s coming. S A G I T TA R I U S : Yo u ’ r e n o t i n the doghouse y e t , S a g i t t a r i u s . Ta k e steps now to turn things around and get back in the good graces of everyone involved.
