SILVER CITY DAYS
Festival offers something for everyone BY BREANNE MASSEY Times Staff
A taste of something new and something old highlights the 48th annual Silver City Days, which begin today in Trail. More food vendors on the midway and the return of the popular Sidewalk Café are sure to whet the appetite of fairgoers. “As long as I’ve been around, the Sidewalk Café has been the highlight of the event,” said Tom Gawryletz, president of the Trail Smoke Eaters, which is hosting the event. Gawryletz said it was a great opportunity to bring a festival favorite back to life. “We’re not just a hockey club, we’re a part of the community.” The café, inside the Cominco Arena on Saturday, will feature a big spaghetti feast as well as pizza and Italian sausages backed by a day-long lineup of entertainment. The curtain officially rises on Silver City Days tonight when Margaret Taylor is honoured with the Trail-Warfield Citizen of the Year Award. Taylor’s endless dedication for improving the surrounding communities and flare for creativity will be recognized in a ceremony at 7 p.m. at St. Michael’s School. On Wednesday, the midway goes into action between 3 to 11 p.m. as well as the food vendors and several shopping booths There will be a wide variety of foods to

Along with the fun and food on the midway, a dance for senior citizens will be held between 3:30 and
8 p.m. at the Cominco Gym. An engaging performance from local legends North of 60 sets the mood for locals to enjoy a cold beer, glass of wine or an assortment of snacks. Friday, fair fun continues with the bocce tournament at the Trail Curling Rink beginning at noon. The night will be elegantly capped off by the Trail Ambassador Candidate Debut at the Charles Bailey Theatre. Saturday’s jammedpacked day begins with
the Trail Firefighter’s Silver City Day Parade at 11 a.m. The parade route remains the same as in years gone by – beginning by the old bridge, crossing the Victoria St. Bridge and finishing near the aquatic centre. Right at the conclusion of the parade, the Sidewalk Café starts dishing out its tasty treats. Along with food, the arena will resonate with the sounds of musical entertainment from Austin Rafuse,
Katie Louglin, Mariah Morris, Eric Bulanoff and Jason Thomas. There will also be three dance performances and many other great groups. KidSport Community Fest will be hosting a food court with live music and a kid zone by Ferraro Foods from noon to 5 p.m. Locals who like to shake things up with dancing will be thrilled about the choices this year—there will be two events available including ballroom dancing or a reunion dance. The SwingSations will be playing music at the KP Hall ballroom dance between 8 p.m. and midnight and North of 60 will appear at the reunion dance following the Sidewalk Café at the Cominco Arena between 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. No Silver City Days Saturday would be complete without fireworks. Expect the sky to light up around dusk near the boat launch. The hectic weekend wraps up on Sunday. Morning people can attend the Silver City Days Fun Run at 9 a.m, at Gyro Park. If you like to sleep in—turn up around noon for more fun on the midway until 6 p.m. Swimmers can take advantage of the free drop-in use of the Trail Aquatic Centre between noon and 3 p.m. or listen to the Trail Maple Leaf Band in Gyro Park at noon. Family Fun Day in Gyro Park caps off the weekend until 5 p.m.
Border bust nets 80 pounds of cocaine BY TIMOTHY SCHAFER Times Staff
A border breach gambit on foot in the wild land between Canada and the U.S. did not pay off for three men transporting over $800,000 in cocaine as they were tracked in the Nelway port of entry area south of Salmo. U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents arrested two Canadian citizens and one Mexican man and seized around 36 kilograms (80 pounds) of cocaine — estimated to be worth $801,000 — near Metaline Falls, Wash., late last week. The seizure was the result of active patrolling of the remote border trails by border patrol agents in the field, said CBP chief of the border patrol sector in Spokane, Gloria Chavez. She said the three men were encountered around 19 kilometres north of Metaline Falls in the Salmo Mountain area right on the Canadian border. One of the suspects hid from CBP agents and was tracked out the next day in a snowstorm with support from the Office of Air and Marine, Spokane Air Branch. Chavez noted that the two Canadians and the cocaine were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) for “further processing.” Prior to the announcement of the seizure, the Spokesman Review in Spokane, Wash., reported on May 2 that three suspected drug smugglers were arrested near the border in Pend Oreille County with 58 pounds of cocaine.

Seven Summits loop proposed BY ARNE PETRYSHEN Rossland News
The Kootenay Columbia Trail Society has its sights set on turning the famous Seven Summits bike trail into a loop. Currently, the Rossland area trail is ridden as a one way, 30 km trail, but the KCTS told council last week that they are looking at the possibility of making it into a 65 km loop. Isaac Saban, president of the KCTS said that the extra 24 km, which would connect the city to Nancy Greene summit, would cater to the long distance bikers.

Police display array of items seized in drug-related arrests BY CAROLYN GRANT Cranbrook Townsman
Cocaine, crack cocaine, heroin, suspected methamphetamine, acid, magic mushrooms, hash, marijuana, suspected ecstasy. That’s part of the list of seized drugs on display at the Kimberley detachment last Friday as the Kimberley/ Cranbrook Detachment presented the results of a monthslong drug investigation. Also on display was packaging paraphernalia and weapons such as brass knuckles. Media Officer Cpl. Pat Prefontaine spoke to the press on Friday and reported that 25 arrests on drug-related charges, 19 of those for trafficking, have been forwarded to Crown Counsel. “We would like the residents of Kimberley and Cranbrook to know that police are very aware of illicit drugs being bought and sold in both cities and we are taking an active stance,” he said. One disturbing aspect among many, he said, was that some of those arrested were in their mid to late teens. “Some arrests were high-school-aged,” he said. “Our investigators found that these people are more than willing to sell to us and our children. If you have the money, they will sell the drugs.” The arrests were part of local initiative by the Kimberley/ Cranbrook Detachment, using plain-clothes officers and other resources. Some of the displayed drugs were the result of search warrants, others were seized from people. Prefontaine said that police wanted citizens to see what had been taken off the streets in just a few months.

Trails well used Council questions regional district spending FROM PAGE 1 The City of Rossland currently contributes $19,000, as well as another $14,000 indirectly through the regional district. The society has a total budget of about $100,000 he said, which comes through donations, membership and other contributions. That allows the KCTS to pay for insurance and maintenance on the trail network, which is required for the insurance policy to provide public access on private land. “The vast majority of the trails are located on private land,” he said. Saban argued that the KCTS provides great value for money as the $100,000 in funds allows something like 120,000 individual uses of the trails. “That’s us looking at the numbers that we see in the sign-in areas,” he said. “And using counters that unfortunately only pick up bicycles, because they require the metal to trip the counters.” Because of that he estimates there are more people who are walking or running the trails, who are not counted. Saban said that the trails around Rossland are also being used as a model for others in Western Canada. “Other areas are not as fortunate to have the funding we receive, and it makes all the difference in the world,” he said. “People who come here and use the trails are blown away by the quality of trails and the maintenance here that they don’t see anywhere else.”

Council had a few concerns with the Regional District of KootenayBoundary’s increase in its annual budget of 3.5 per cent, as Rossland has managed another year with zero increases. Coun Tim Thatcher found the spending surprising. “There’s a lot of money being spent,” Thatcher said. “I know we can’t control that but it seems out of control.” Thatcher noted some of the big budget items, like the transit cost of almost $200,000. “Are we really getting the value out of that?” he asked “I know its a touchy subject, but thats a big chunk of money, when you look at the ridership.” Coun. Jill Spearn defended the transit saying that it helps people who

don’t have the opportunity to drive. “It addresses a segment of society, whether they be less fortunate or whether they choose to be green and take the bus or other reason like seniors,” Spearn said, adding that she noted to council years ago that Rossland could probably do with small busses, using the busses she saw in Mexico as example. “The buses here are huge and they’re seemingly underused. It’s the format of the transportation that we might take issue with in my mind. She noted that businesses in Rossland benefit from more transit to the city. Coun. Jody Blomme agreed with Spearn. “I think it’s very important that we have a transit system,” Blomme said. “Particularly for younger people who want to get places and who don’t have
cars so we can’t take that away.” She said that the city needs to come up with ways to encourage ridership. Coun. Kathy Wallace, who represents Rossland at the RDKB, noted that Rossland did accept expansion of hours. “So we have more buses coming to Rossland,” she said. “Every night of the week there is a 6:30 p.m. bus. That’s intended to encourage the commuters to take the bus.” Wallace said that the public bus system is needed in the area, noting that it is very expensive. “There is a review of transit and there will be a discussion coming from the East End to the province to say that urban planning doesn’t fit rural areas,” she said. “That’s part of the difficulty that we have - we have less population, we have greater geographical area,
All Joico Aerosol Hairspray or Mousse While Supplies Last
we have 2,000 ft. of elevation coming up this side and 500 ft. going up the other. The buses are determined by the province and that is part of the problem.” Wallace said the city sized buses are full a couple of times a day when kids are off to school. “Other times it is very frustrating watching the big, huge buses drive around with one or two people on them,” she said. Mayor Greg Granstrom pointed out that Rossland pays the regional district about $1.4 million. The regional fire service has almost doubled that of Rossland’s budget to $430,000. Granstrom hoped that the RDKB would endeavour to keep the funds in line. “It might also be interesting to point out that there is a 3.5 per cent increase in taxes from the regional district,” Granstrom said.

Mayor talks business with Arizona city
Eight fewer teachers next year
BY ALISTAIR WATERS Kelowna Capital News
Kelowna Mayor Walter Gray’s quick trip to Scottsdale last week to investigate the possibility of a future business relationship between his city and its Arizona counterpart, has already yielded its first result. Contacted in Scottsdale last Wednesday, Gray told the “Kelowna Capital News” that at a meeting with city and business representatives there, it was decided to hold two symposiums—one in Kelowna in August and another in Scottsdale next February—to introduce officials to each city. “It will be like a home and home series,” said Gray, stressing the relationship being investigated will be strictly business and not a sistercity relationship such as the cultural and social ones Kelowna has with Kasugai, Japan and Veendam in the Netherlands. Gray said in addition to the meeting with Scottsdale Mayor Jim Laine, he also attended a meeting organized by the KelownaScottsdale Business Council, a group of Scottsdale businesspeople, some with ties to Canada. Present at the meeting was the Canadian consul and senior trade representative whose area includes Arizona.
Gray said he came away from the meting encouraged by the reception he, Central Okanagan economic development commissioner Robert Fine, and city councillors Andre Blanleil and Colin Basran received and was pleased to see the two cities have a lot in common. “This would all be about business but often the way you make someone think about business is by familiarizing them with your area, and that is often done first by being a tourist,” said Gray. So, to the end, he said when the representatives from Scottsdale come here, they will be shown many of the recreational attractions this area offers such as golf courses and wineries. Gray noted as an example of the familiarity many here have with the Scottdale area, 55 per cent of the residents of the Gallagher’s Canyon golf resort area are “snowbirds” with 65 per cent of them spending time in the Phoenix/Scotdale area of Arizona every winter. Gray added that one of the issues that needs to be addressed in order to create any “sustainable” relationship is a more frequent airline connection between the two communities. Currently, Westjet offer service between Kelowna and Scottsdale during the winter months only.

There will be eight fewer teachers and no drama program at Alberni District Secondary next year, Alberni District Teachers’ Union President Ken Zydyk announced last week. There will be 17.5 fewer full-time equivalent (FTE) teachers across School District 70 next year, Zydyk said. The cuts are the result of declining student enrolment. The bulk of the losses are at Alberni District Secondary School where eight pinks slips are expected to be handed out. “This is over half of the reduction,” Zydyk said, adding it’s not just teachers that will be lost at the high school but programs as well. “It’s my understanding that drama and project based learning will not be offered next year and there may be others,” Zydyk said.

sides are scheduled to go to mediation in mid-June. Clerical staff apparently rejected a fouryear deal with no wage increases, according to a press release from the B.C. Government and Service Employees’ Union. “Workers sent a clear message to the employer that freezing wages for clerical positions, a 100 per cent female department, is unacceptable,” negotiator Debra Critchley said in the release. The RDOS said workers asked for raises of 6.2 per cent and 3.18 per cent, respectively, in 2012 and 2013, after receiving wage hikes totalling 5.5 per cent over the past three years. While the board praised its employees, “we’re disappointed that they believe a 6.2 per cent increase in 2012 is something the citizens of the RDOS would support,” Ashton said.

ISRAELI PRESIDENT IN OTTAWA
NATIONAL Ombudsman says agency fails to give veterans adequate support THE CANADIAN PRESS
THE CANADIAN PRESS/ADRIAN WYLD
Israeli President Shimon Peres talks with Canadian Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper before a meeting on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, Monday.
OTTAWA - Canada’s veterans ombudsman has torn a strip off the agency where ex-soldiers are supposed to turn for a fair, sympathetic hearing. Guy Parent looked at the number of cases belonging to the Veterans Review and Appeal Board that ended up before the Federal Court, and determined 60 per cent of them failed to conduct procedurally fair assessments. Parent accused the agency of failing to give veterans the benefit of the doubt, of leaving applicants in the dark about reasons for its decisions and not disclosing medical information used in its rulings. “This is about the fair treatment of the men and women who have served their country honourably, he said in a statement. “The board has been granted very liberal powers by Parliament and entrusted to make decisions by drawing every reasonable inference in favour of applicants, accepting credible uncontradicted evidence and giving veterans the benefit of the doubt.
The 53-page investigation is the latest blow to the review agency, which earlier this year was at the centre of a privacy scandal where one of its members claimed he’d been targeted for a smear campaign because he’d sided too often with veterans. The ombudsman did note that the board is swamped, conducting as many as 5,000 reviews of Veterans Affairs Canada cases each year. “I recognize that board members and staff have the difficult task of determining the merits of cases by deciding on questions of law and fact in an environment characterized by heavy workloads, increasingly complex cases, and pressure to issue timely decisions, he said. Parent added it’s up to the department to consider why so many of its decisions are the subject of challenge. Whenever a veteran is unhappy with a decision of Veterans Affairs on ether benefits or services, they have the right to have their cases reviewed by the board. If the board rejects the veteran’s claim, the last resort is Federal Court.

Resolution to tuition Suspended student returns to school – briefly dispute fading THE CANADIAN PRESS
THE CANADIAN PRESS MONTREAL - Talk of peace in Quebec’s threemonth student conflict appears to be premature. At least seven student associations have voted to reject the agreement between the provincial government and student leaders - some of them by massive majorities, of up to 94 per cent. Those details are being provided by protest leaders; there are reports that one student assembly in the Gaspe region agreed to the deal, while many others rejected it. The deal uses a variety of mechanisms to keep student fees frozen until the end of the year - but there’s a possibility the fees will increase exactly as planned next January. 5)& ,005&/":n4 05& &/":n4 0/-:

Oil tanker debate sinks to new depths
T
he B.C. NDP has ramped up its opposition to the proposed Northern Gateway oil pipeline. First the party formalized objections already expressed by NDP MLAs who have spoken at hearings held by the federal review panel along the B.C. coast. Leader Adrian Dix sent an 11-page letter to the panel, then launched an attack on the B.C. Liberal government in the legislature that emphasized the letter’s top objection. Why doesn’t Premier Christy Clark stand up to Ottawa and protest the abandonment of the long-standing “moratorium and exclusion zone” on oil tankers off B.C.’s north coast, Dix and NDP energy critic Rob Fleming demanded. Clark’s answer was the same one given for many years by federal and provincial governments. The 1972 federal “moratorium” was directed at offshore
oil drilling, not tankers bound for B.C. A separate Canada-U.S. agreement in 1998 calls for U.S. tankers to avoid B.C.’s Inside Passage as they transport Alaska crude oil to refineries in Washington state and further south. I asked Fleming for documentation that shows tankers are banned from B.C.’s north coast. He said it is “fragmented,” which means he doesn’t have any. Nor does the NDP’s heavily footnoted letter to the federal panel offer any source for this assertion. This argument flared up in 2006 after Methanex Corp. shut down its Kitimat methanol plant. Instead of shipping methanol out, a practice that was never questioned, it started bringing tankers into the Kitimat port loaded with a liquid natural gas by-product called condensate. From there it is sent by rail to Alberta to dilute oil sands crude. This process led to Enbridge’s proposed double pipeline that would send conden-

FLETCHER B.C. Views sate east and diluted crude west. The Dogwood Initiative, one of the multiple U.S.funded groups that now dominate B.C.’s environmental lobby, rose to protest these early condensate shipments, saying they violate a moratorium on tankers. Wrong, said Don Rodden, superintendent of environmental response for the Canadian Coast Guard Pacific Region. The 1972 moratorium “wouldn’t apply to vessels coming into Canadian ports like Kitimat,” Rodden told the “Globe and Mail” at the
time. The Coast Guard would be the agency legally required to enforce such a tanker ban, if one existed. As I’ve mentioned before, there are legitimate arguments against the Northern Gateway proposal. This hippy-fantasy tanker moratorium isn’t one of them. Then there is the hypocrisy and pro-U.S. bias that is so clearly evident in the manipulated B.C. debate. The Northern Gateway pipeline would generate as many as 350 tanker trips each year to and from Kitimat. More than twice that many tankers already sail each year through the Strait of Juan de Fuca, past the Gulf and San Juan Islands. Many are heading to refinery complexes at March Point and Cherry Point in Washington. These supertankers can be seen sailing past Victoria most days. Strangely, this
U.S. crude traffic excites no protests. Some of the smaller tankers come in to fill up from the Trans-Mountain pipeline in Burnaby, whose operator is preparing a bid for expansion. This attracts protests organized by people paid to oppose Alberta “tar sands” oil. Where do urban protesters think we get the gasoline and diesel fuel sold at B.C. filling stations? Do they think it’s all made at the little Chevron refinery in Burnaby, the last remnant of refining capacity in southern B.C.? We could use a serious debate about how B.C. handles petroleum. Instead, we see factually inaccurate claims promoted by U.S. interests to attack Canadian crude only. Our opposition politicians and media mostly just go along for the ride. Finally, Obama has consistently avoided any serious reform of Medicare (health for the aged), Medicaid (health care for the poor), or Social Security, which, along with other mandatory spending, now account for 58 per cent of the federal budget. These three programs alone explain the United States longterm deficit crisis. The GOP is proposing to genuinely reform these programs in an attempt to deal with the country’s longerterm deficit problem. Another area of stark contrast is health care. Assuming Obamacare, Obama`s signature legislation, is upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court in June, which is not at all a given, health care will inevitably be front and centre in the fall election, with the President defending his legislation and the GOP promising to repeal it. The blatant differences between the President and the GOP are rooted in different visions for the role of government in society. The size and nature of government spending, how it is to be financed (taxes and borrowing), the risk of debt, health care, and a host of other issues will be debated this fall as the United States moves towards electing its next president. Such differences and the resulting policies will have an influence on American society and its economy, perhaps a profound one. Such is the consequence of the coming election. Jason Clemens is the director of research for the Ottawa-based Macdonald-Laurier Institute (www.macdonaldlaurier.ca). Prior to returning to Canada to join MLI in 2011, Mr. Clemens lived and worked in the U.S. following federal and California fiscal policy.
The space race enters phase two An editorial from the Amherst Daily News To boldly go where only billionaires can take us. It was about time, but better late than never: A serious assembly of the rich, powerful and smart has announced its intention to mine asteroids. Part of the project includes creating water reserves in space. Water, found in asteroids, can be used as fuel and provide oxygen - key resources in humanity’s quest to venture beyond near-Earth orbit. Pundits will argue, but it may be the most significant announcement in space exploration since President Kennedy promised America would go to the moon. It’s a wonder this didn’t happen sooner. As a tycoon, you can only build so many megayachts before you start being disappointed in yourself.
Where’s the vision? Where’s the sense of destiny? Well, Eric Anderson, the founder of a space tourism company, and Peter Diamandis, the man behind the X Prize, have joined forces with Google luminaries Larry Page and Eric Schmidt, the son of businessman Ross Perot - Ross Jr., and James Cameron - who constantly disappoints critics with his successes - to create Planetary Resources Inc. They’ve also got Microsoft’s former chief software engineer, Charles Simonyi, on board, as well as NASA manager Chris Lewicki. It’s hard to say which is deeper, their pockets or their talent pool. They can afford to spend, even at a loss, billions of dollars in their quest to pursue what could become the big-
gest step in human history: expansion beyond Earth. We shouldn’t get ahead of ourselves. There are hurdles to overcome and it will be years, if not decades, before the first load of riches is returned to Earth from outer space. In the interim, though, it’s time for government to pass the torch: offer incentives and concessions to encourage industry - not handouts, but favourable terms and licensing guarantees for companies that take big gambles on space. Egos are powerful things. Rich people endow universities with millions to get their names on libraries. What will they give to be remembered as the founders of Sol, a solar system-wide human civilization? Sounds like a sci-fi movie? Yes, and we’re living it.

It takes many hands to get a Harley home Canadian bikers pitch in to return tsunami bike to Japanese owner THE CANADIAN PRESS VICTORIA - Call it the brotherhood of the travelling bike. For many Canadian bikers the storied journey of the Harley-Davidson bike from Japan to B.C.’s rocky shores after last years’ tsunami will not be complete until it is reunited with its original owner. Wisconsin couple wins Amazing Race THE ASSOCIATED PRESS MADISON, Wis. - A Wisconsin couple who appeared on the CBS realityTV show “The Amazing Race” outlasted 10 other couples to claim top honours and a $1 million grand prize. On their way to victory, Madison’s Dave and Rachel Brown raced across five continents, nine countries and 22 cities. They won in December, but their win was only revealed during Sunday’s season finale. The show pits 11 two-person teams against each other in a trek around the world in which they must overcome a series of physical and mental obstacles. Some of this season’s challenges required stra-
tegic thinking and the ability to read terrain, which proved to be an advantage to Army veteran Dave Brown. The former Blackhawk helicopter pilot has a background in military intelligence was also an officer in the Wisconsin Army National Guard. “This is definitely my element,” he remarked when he and his wife boarded a helicopter. The win was in doubt when the Browns, arrived at the final stop only to be told they had missed an obstacle. “We thought he was kidding,” Dave Brown said. “We were under the impression that there was just one roadblock.” In a bit of good fortune the
contest came down to a test of bowling skills. Rachel had to roll a stone down a dirt field into a goal. After just a few tries she nailed a strike. “Dave and I were actually in a bowling league at Schwoegler’s one year and we were terrible,” she said. “We were one of the worst teams in the league.” The couple agreed that after being kept apart by Dave’s Army deployment and Rachel’s frequent travel for her software company job, being able to spend time together was one of the best parts of competing. “Just being with each other 24-7 was awesome,” Dave said.
beach on Haida Gwaii, volunteers have looked after the bike every step of the way - ferrying it across Hecate Strait and then driving it about 1,600 kilometres from the northwestern, B.C. city of Prince Rupert to Victoria, where it will be shipped back to Japan. “I thought, you know, if I lost one of my bikes it would be pretty important to get it back,” said Ralph Tieleman, a Tofino, B.C., man and motorcycle enthusiast, who trucked the bike to Victoria. After dropping off the bike at Steve Drane Harley-Davidson Sunday and returning back to his home on the west coast of Vancouver Island, Tieleman figures he’ll have travelled at least 3,000 kilometres. The 2004 Harley-Davidson Night Train bike - caked in salt and damaged by pounding surf - may be one of the most unique and improbable artifacts to hit the west coast of Canada since the disaster. Earlier this year, the U.S. Coast Guard sank an unmanned fishing boat because it was a hazard to shipping and to the coastline. Last month, a soccer ball lost by a Japanese teenager also washed ashore on an Alaskan island. The bike was found in April on Graham Island, the largest Haida Gwaii island, by Masset, B.C. resident Peter Mark. The motorcycle had made it across the Pacific stored in a large container and packed in Styrofoam. Traced through the bike’s licence plates, the motorcycle’s owner was identified as Ikuo Yokoyama, a 29-year-old Japanese man who lost three family members in last year’s disaster.
Tieleman, who began riding Harleys at the age of 15, said he heard about the bike and decided to get involved. He said Mark went through exceptional effort to get the Harley, driving about 60 kilometres off road and in a four-by-four to reach the buried bike and winching it out of the sand. The bike was then taken to the ferry and arrived Friday in Prince Rupert, where it was met by Tieleman and his truck. Tieleman said he drove east to Prince George, south to Vancouver, and then hopped on yet another ferry that took him to Victoria. Along the way, people, and even police, stopped to look at the bike, some even taking photos, said Tieleman. “It’s caked in salt and corrosion,” said Tieleman, after arriving in Victoria. “There’s rocks jammed everywhere. It got beat up on the beach a bit.” The bike’s frame is still good and so are its engine and transmission cases, he said, noting that even the bike’s front end is in good shape. According to a statement, Steve Drane Harley-Davidson will prepare the bike for shipment to Japan, where it will be restored by Harley-Davidson Japan and returned to its owner. Tieleman said the journey provides a powerful lesson to others who find tsunami-related debris on B.C. beaches. “Remember that it’s somebody’s property and what people there went through,” he said. “It’s not just junk. “At one point, it was part of someone’s life.”

‘Avengers’ smash record THE ASSOCIATED PRESS LOS ANGELES - Hulk, smash. That’s what Captain America tells the Incredible Hulk to do in “The Avengers,” and that’s what the Marvel Comics superhero mash-up did at the box office, smashing the domestic revenue record with a $200.3 million debut. It’s by far the biggest opening ever, shooting past the previous record of $169.2 million for the debut of last year’s “Harry Potter” finale. “The Avengers” added $151.5 million overseas over the weekend to bring its total to $441.5 million since it began opening internationally a week earlier. That raised the film’s worldwide haul to $641.8 million in barely a week and a half, more than its Marvel superhero forerunners “Iron Man,” ”Iron Man 2,“ ”Thor“ and ”Captain America“ took in during their entire runs. Until the “Harry Potter” finale, 2008’s “The Dark Knight” had held the revenue record with a $158.4 million debut. Before that, the recordholder was 2007’s “Spider-Man 3” with $151.1 million.

President’s Message I would like to invite Trail and District citizens to UIF UI BOOVBM 4JMWFS City Days 2012. The Trail Festival Society’s directors have spent another long year organizing this event with the hopes that all those attending will enjoy themselves. We have many local nonproďŹ t groups that work hard to supply great food and events for all to enjoy during this event. Also we have returning vendors to complement the festival as well. West Coast Amusements will once again supply the carnival rides for us. The Society runs this event as a separate entity from the City of Trail; the city does supply an operational grant to help us provide this great event. Some of the local business owners in the area are also eager to provide us with funds to help with the event. For those of you the Society and myself give Thanks, as without you it would be hard to continue this great event. We are continuing to try and make this event enjoyable for all ages. As well we continue to try and make this a Multi-Cultural event. If you have any ideas or would like to bring your cultural ways into this event contact us with your ideas. Trail Festival Society P.O. Box 333, 5SBJM # $ 7 3 - As in past years we have tried to make this event bigger and better. Do come down to this great event bring your family and friends have some great food and entertainment. We have lots for all ages to take part in. Hope to see you at the festival Ian McLeod President, Trail Festival Society/Silver City Days’ Committee

Meeting resolves Grizzly issue BY JIM BAILEY Times Sports Editor
The Kootenay International Junior Hockey League (KIJHL) held its board of governors meeting in Castlegar on Sunday, with the biggest news confirming that the Revelstoke Grizzlies are staying put. The board meets four times a year discussing concerns and addressing changes to the League. The biggest challenge in recent weeks was the announcement last month that the Revelstoke Grizzlies were moving to 100 Mile House for the 2012-13 season. “We addressed the Revelstoke situation and the owner is going to operate this year,” said KIJHL president Bill Olhausen. In early April, majority owner Michael Roberts of Grizzlies Sports Entertainment (GSE) announced that the team was to be sold to 100 Mile House - a city that already had a logo and website in anticipation of the KIJHL’s arrival. “It was a limited company and there was four original share holders, and one made the decision he was going to sell, but without telling the others,” said Olhausen. Strong resistance from the Revelstoke Grizzlies’ Society, and an alleged clause in the ownership contract that restricted the group from selling the team by giving the Society the option to purchase it for $1 if sold before 2016. Roberts has since turned over his shares to GSE partner Lew Hendrickson. “He (Hendrickson) was questioned at the meeting, regarding if he was able to operate and look after the ice bill from last year and so on, and he indicated to the governors that he was able to, so we agreed to let him operate,” said Olhausen. The KIJHL will start the 2012-13 season as a 20-team league with a 52-game schedule and all playoff rounds a best of seven. One concern that raised the ire of Beaver Valley Nitehawk president Denis Bedin was B.C. Hockey’s intent to move the Cyclone Taylor Tournament back a week. “They did that without consulting us,” said Bedin. “B.C. Hockey stops at Princeton, they don’t really care about the interior.” Despite the issue, Bedin came away from the meeting with a very positive attitude for the coming KIJHL season. “The meeting was very long but very productive. All the KI teams are on board, I mean it was great.”

Vees lose in OT PENTICTON WESTERN NEWS
Wade Murphy scored twice for the Penticton Vees but they came up short, this time to the host Humboldt Broncos 3-2 in overtime. Murphy tied the game for the Vees at 2-2, but Andrew Johnston scored the winner at 4:57 with Kyle Beaulieu in the box for a five-minute major and game misconduct for boarding. Matt Glowa scored seven seconds into the game to give the hosts a 1-0 lead. Murphy equaled the score with 51 seconds remaining in the period. The Broncos outshot the Vees 43-31 including 22 shots in the second period as the Vees were forced to kill eight minutes in penalties that period. Murphy received Player of the Game honours for the Vees. The Vees are now winless in two games. Their next game is Tuesday against the Woodstock Slammers.

Brody Tedesco receives the ball from Mackenzie Gibson on a penalty run for the Rossland/Trail junior boys in rugby action play-day Friday against Grand Forks.
High school rubgy teams hit the pitch BY TIMES STAFF High school rugby action hit the pitch running Friday as teams from across the Kootenays gathered at Upper Sunningdale Park for the second play day of the season. The combined Rossland Secondary - J. L. Crowe junior team started the day off against Grand Forks. Grand Forks got out to an early lead with an unconverted try, while Rossland-Crowe lost a player to a red card for a dangerous tackle. Both teams struggled to hold onto the ball in the wet conditions. But the juniors persevered and tied things up in the second half with a try by Alex Stanton. However, with the game on the line, the conversion hit the post, leaving the host team with a 5-5 tie. The combined Rossland-Trail-Grand Forks senior team then played rival Nelson but the visitors jumped out in front early with two trys in the first half and added another in the second. The R-T-GF seniors played a solid defensive game but could not muster any scoring, losing the game 17-0. The juniors faced Kimberley in their second match and after
handing the East Kootenay team a thumping last week, the Rossland-Crowe squad delivered more of the same. The juniors put up trys in the first half by Derek Reimer, Stanton and Mackenzie Gibson, all converted due to excellent kicking by Julian Zimmer. The boys got into penalty trouble and conceded a try before the end of the first half, but returned in the second with two more trys by Cody Shaw and Evan Kulik to win the game 33-5. In the last game of the day, the seniors faced off for the first time this year against Cranbrook. Cranbrook jumped out to an early lead, but the seniors responded with a converted try of their own, off a brilliant end-to-end run by Luke Reimer. The big Cranbrook side preferred to run the ball, making for a hard-hitting match filled with strong tackling. In the second half, Mackenzie Gibson scored a try off a broken Cranbrook scrum but Cranbrook responded. The local squad made good on their conversions and that was the difference as R-T-GF boys won 14-10.
JUNIOR GOLF
Hoodikoff makes it three in a row BY TIMES STAFF Junior golfer Jordan Hoodikoff won his third event in as many tries, as the Zone 1 West Kootenay junior golf tour made stops in Nelson and Christina Lake on the weekend. On Saturday, difficult course conditions greeted golfers to Granite Point Golf Club in Nelson. Scores were high, but in the end, Hoodikoff from Christina Lake took the overall title with a 4-over par round of 76. The next day, the 18-year-old showed his experience and poise as he won his third straight Zone 1 event with a 3-under 69 on his home course. Garrett Underwood from Champion Lake took first in the 17-18-year cat-
egory with an 84 at Granite Point, while Alex Rugg also from Champion finished second with an 87. In the 15-16 year olds, female golfer Amber Arnold was first with an 88 and Isaac Janzen from Creston was second with a 90. One of the best performances on the day came from the 13-14 year olds, where Nolan Renwick from Granite Point carded a 79 to finish second overall, but first in his flight. Braden McKay from RTCC was second in 13-14 year flight with an 84. More than 30 juniors teed it up Sunday at Christina Lake with warm weather bringing improved scores. Tyler McKay, from Rossland-Trail, made it interesting and was 1-under
through 14 holes, but two late bogies led to a 1-over par 73 to finish behind Hoodikoff. In the flights, Underwood and Brenan Moroney (RTCC) went to a three-hole playoff and Underwood ended up taking first in the 17-18 year division. Tyler McKay took first in the 15-16 year category with Janzen from Creston getting second with a 78. In the 13-14 year division, Braden McKay shot the low round with a 77. For the first time in a few years the West Kootenay Junior tour had enough females to run a female division. Amber Arnold from Castlegar beat MacKenzie Field in a two-hole playoff to take first. Both girls posted identical rounds of 88.

Giroux gets game THE CANADIAN PRESS
NEW YORK - The Philadelphia Flyers will face playoff elimination without forward Claude Giroux. The NHL slapped the all-star with a one-game suspension for delivering a shoulder blow to the head of New Jersey forward Dainius Zubrus in the Devils’ 4-2 win Sunday night. Giroux hit Zubrus at 19:56 of the second period and was assessed a minor penalty for an illegal check to the head on the play. Zubrus, who scored the eventual game winner earlier in the period, was shaken up on the play but returned to score an empty-net goal to seal it late. Brendan Shanahan, the NHL’s senior vice-president, player safety and hockey operations, said Giroux delivered a “late, reckless hit to the head” of Zubrus on the play. Giroux took part in a disciplinary hearing with the NHL on Monday. He said he “respects the decision and wants to move on.” It marked the first time in Giroux’s
four-year NHL career that he had received supplemental discipline from the league. The Devils lead the best-of-seven series 3-1 with the fifth game scheduled for Philadelphia on Tuesday. On the shift late in the second, the video shows Giroux being hit legally by a New Jersey defenceman after dumping the puck into the Devils’ zone. As the puck is fired past Giroux, he can be seen showing his frustration to an official and at one point even turning his back to the play and looking at the referee. It’s at this point when there’s a turnover and Giroux begins to pursue Zubrus. After pulling even with the New Jersey player, Giroux chops down on Zubrus’ stick and “drives upward with his shoulder making principle point of contact with Zubrus’s head,” Shanahan said. “This is a violation of the illegal check to the head rule.”

HELSINKI, Finland - Patrick Sharp knew exactly what he was getting when Ryan Nugent-Hopkins was placed on a line with him and Jamie Benn at the IIHF World Hockey Championship. “He had a lot of success against the Blackhawks this year, I’m familiar with the type of player he is,” Sharp said of NugentHopkins. “He’s a great skater, he handles the puck well and he can finish when he gets an opportunity as well.” It showed on
games of the tournament. Against France, Sharp took a number of faceoffs in his place - he and Nugent-Hopkins rotated between centre and wing - and the trio was dangerous virtually every time it was on the ice. “It’s a transition coming overseas,” said Nugent-Hopkins. “I didn’t want to get down on myself because it’s a long tournament.” Canada got exactly what it wanted from a game against one of the weaker teams at the event. Hamels sits out rotation THE ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Cole Hamels has been suspended five games for intentionally throwing at Washington rookie Bryce Harper. Major League Baseball announced the penalty Monday. Hamels also was fined. Hamels plunked Harper in the small of the back with a fastball in the first inning Sunday night. The Phillies won 9-3 and Hamels admitted that he deliberately threw at Harper. Unless appealed, Hamels was scheduled to begin serving his suspension Monday night when the Phillies hosted the New York Mets.

Offer assistance to overwhelmed sister-in-law Dear Annie: My sister-in-law asked me to wipe her PC’s hard drive so she could donate it. In the process, I discovered an old suicide note she had written. It dates back five years, which was a time when I know she felt overwhelmed caring for a disabled friend. In the note, it says she felt terribly burdened by this unwanted responsibility. My sister-in-law recently moved back home to take care of her father, who is aging but is otherwise in good health. I’m afraid she may get overwhelmed again. What should I do? -- Help for My Brother’s Wife Dear Wife: Any caregiver can feel overwhelmed, and you would not be breaking any confidences to offer assistance and support. Ask whether you could shop for groceries or pick up a prescription. If Dad is healthy enough to be left alone, take your sister-in-law out for coffee

and conversation. If not, tell her you’ll sit with Dad for an hour so she can have a break. Talk to her often. And make sure she has the contact information for resources such as the Eldercare Locator (eldercare.gov) at 1-800-677-1116 and the National Family Caregivers Association (nfcacares.org). Dear Annie: Next month would have been my fourth anniversary had I not moved out of the house I shared with husband, who is 12 years my junior. “John” and I have been in a relationship for almost 10 years, and I thought I knew him. The problem started soon after our wedding,
when I returned from an out-of-state trip and found pictures he had taken of himself -- naked, graphic and posing suggestively with photos of other men. John said he was just curious about taking them and denies ever posting the pictures online. I thought we worked through it after many heartfelt discussions, but then six months ago, I caught him surfing gay porn on my computer, as well as watching it on TV. He promised he would go to counseling, and I gave him one last chance, saying I would leave him if he lied to me about it again. In February, I ran a profile of the top five websites that he visits -- and they were all porn. I also discovered that he has charged porn to his credit card. That was the last straw. I rented a house, and he finally realized that I was serious. But he doesn’t understand why I want out of the relationship. He says it’s
“just porn” and refuses counseling. I cannot make him see that it is not just the porn. It is the lying, hiding, withholding of affection, withdrawal from me and his daily pot smoking that led up to my leaving. Annie, I am a pretty, petite, youthful woman with a great job. I provide John with a comfortable lifestyle, but I refuse to keep enabling him. Should I stay with him even though I will never trust or respect him again? -- Suicidal and Angry Dear Angry: Trust and respect are two rather important aspects of a healthy marriage. If counseling does not help you regain those elements, we don’t see a happy future for you. And it sounds as if excessive pornography isn’t your only problem with John. A man who “specializes” in homoerotic porn has other things on his mind: men, for instance. Dear Annie: “A
Disappointed 15-YearOld Girl” was offended by your comment to “Upstate New York Dad” that it’s not unusual for teenagers to show poor judgment. She interpreted that as a slap in the face to all responsible teenagers.
I could be equally offended by her statement that the irresponsible babysitter was raised by a parent who has no dignity or honesty. I could choose to interpret that as a slap in the face to all parents who raised their
children with dignity and honesty, only to see those same children make bad decisions. So, honey, be careful with your criticism, and don’t be so anxious to take offense. -- Realistic Michigan Mom

LEISURE
YOUR HOROSCOPE By Francis Drake For Wednesday, May 9, 2012 ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Discussions with bosses, parents, teachers and VIPs -- especially females -- will be intense today! If there’s a difference of opinion, it’s probably in your best interests to back down or just agree. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Avoid passionate discussions about politics, religion or racial issues today. Logic will not prevail. Quite the contrary, emotional arguments might break out. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) This is a poor day to decide how to divide an inheritance or share something. People feel territorial and reluctant to budge. Just accept this. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Resist the impulse to improve a partner or friend. You might want to make this person over (for the better),
but don’t do it. Your suggestions will go over like a lead balloon. LEO (July 23 to Aug. 22) Because you have strong ideas about making improvements or introducing reforms where you work, you will want to tell others what you think. Well, today might not be the day to do so. Easy does it. VIRGO (Aug. 23 to Sept. 22) Avoid passionate discussions with romantic partners today. People are entrenched in their views, and they are very jealous as well. Be cool. LIBRA (Sept. 23 to Oct. 22) Impulsiveness and emotional outbursts with family members will be the order of the day. Therefore, tread carefully! A small comment could escalate into a messy scene. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 to Nov. 21) You might feel hot under
the collar about something today. All your conversations with others, especially siblings and relatives, will be intense and potentially volatile. (Yikes.) SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 to Dec. 21) If shopping today, you might be obsessed about buying something: “I have to have it!” Similarly, some of you will feel almost compulsive about doing something to earn money.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 to Jan. 19) You will have intense, emotional experiences with someone today (certainly memorable). Romantic relationships could deepen in a significant way as well. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 to Feb. 18) Your ability to penetrate a foggy situation and get to the truth is excellent today. You might even learn something new about your real feelings
about an issue. PISCES (Feb. 19 to March 20) Conversations with female acquaintances certainly will be memorable today. You might attract someone who is unusually powerful, or vice versa, you might be coming on like gangbusters to others. YOU BORN TODAY You have a strong moral fiber and sense of fair play. You value justice and are sympathetic

to the underdog. Because of this, you’re propelled by your ideals and personal causes. Once you believe in something, you never give up. You always radiate a personal power, regardless of your size.
