Our beaches – there’s a reason Parksville is known as Canada’s Riviera. Few beaches outside Mexico and the Caribbean compare with our kilometres of near perfect sandy beaches at Parksville Bay and Rathtrevor Beach Provincial Park. With long sunny days, water temperatures may be as high as 20 degrees Celsius in the shallows and the flat beaches are safe for everyone in the family, even at high tide. There’s space a plenty for barefoot jogging, beach volleyball, impromptu yoga sessions, sunbathing and fun in the sun. There are six golf courses less than thirty minutes apart, for every level of player and budget. Another fact you might not know - the Oceanside region is recognized by UNESCO as one of only seven biospheres in Canada. This designation is based on the marine, alpine and meadow ecosystems coexisting within a small geographic area.
Events & Festivals
The region is home to 140 annual Events and Festivals which appeal to residents and visitors. Parksville hosts such events as Canada Day celebrations (largest on Vancouver Island), the Quality Foods Canadian Open Sand Sculpting Competition, Kid Fest, Oceanside Overdrive Cruise and Car Show, Brant Wildlife Festival and the Parksville Kitefest. Q Enjoy a leisurely stroll? The two waterfalls and bridges crossing the river at Little Qualicum Falls Provincial Park and the many other community parks in the area provide scenic woodland walks for locals and visitors alike. Or you can visit the beachfront shorebird viewing area, the fish hatcheries, the riverside trails, or the estuary to spot local fish and fowl. In fact, there are twelve amazing parks with just the right level of walking or hiking to meet everyone’s activity level. Love to be active? Thanks to those original vacationers turned settlers of Qualicum Beach, the Town boasts one of the most scenic (and fourth oldest) 9-hole golf courses in the province, right between the Town centre and the beach. With gorgeous views around every corner, it is just one of the many local courses you can enjoy while visiting: Pheasant Glen, Arrowsmith, Morningstar, and Fairwinds to name a few. ›››
H
››› you can see the Town, business owners, and residents take pride in enhancing the beauty of the area with flowers, trees, planters and gardens in every corner. Garden and nature lovers will find many attractions to keep them occupied in Qualicum Beach. Qualicum Beach is the home of Milner Gardens and Woodland, an artist’s country garden in the midst of a natural wood, and The Heritage Forest, featuring a meandering trail showing off unspoiled streams and woods. Both were donated by early settlers of the Town. CONTINUED PG 16

MARKETS
Starting with its annual spring market, the Qualicum Beach Farmers’ Market is a popular community event each year. Held on Veterans Way at Memorial Avenue in Qualicum Beach, the market features seasonal produce from area producers. There are bakeries, farmers and even backyard gardeners and home canners at the market — and that’s just the food. The market stall host a variety of crafters and artisans as well — with a distinctly Vancouver Island flavour. The Qualicum Beach Farmers’ Market gets its start each March for their spring events. The markets are Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon and offer a little something for everyone — from refreshments to entertainment.

To explore the collection of rural communities take the Alberni Highway from Parksville toward Tofino and the first stop is Errington. Arrowsmith Country ends with two more provincial parks — Little Qualicum Falls and MacMillan — around Cameron Lake where an Ogopogo like monster has been spotted. MacMillan Provincial Park provides wheelchair accessible trails meandering right off the highway. Stop for the 800year-old trees towering over 80 metres to get a hint of what B.C. forests used to be like and you’ll see where the park’s more familiar name comes from: Cathedral Grove.
Nestled in Errington on Vancouver Island, NIWRC is a park like setting with a peaceful rustic atmosphere. When visiting the centre you will be able to view eagles, several species of owls, falcons, hawks, ravens, and black bear. his year — 2012 — is building up to be a special one for local community groups, organizations, certain buildings and events. This year is a year of anniversaries, as the people who make it all happen gear up to celebrate in a big way. Really big, in the case of places like the French Creek Community School and local fish and game club who turn 100. In Qualicum Beach, the town council is taking the lead on organizing many of the anniversary events. as the Town of Qualicum Beach itself turns 70 in May. Within the town itself, events such as the Fire and Ice chili cook off and ice sculpting contest, Father’s Day Show and Shine car show, St. Mark’s Fair and even Quality Foods are reaching major milestones.
The anniversaries continue in Parksville, where events like KidFest and Canadian Open Sand Sculpting Championship will be celebrating multiple decades of keeping the fun in the mid-Island. Celebrations continue in the rural areas of Coombs and Errington — and even the Parksville Qualicum Beach News community newspaper marks 30 years of publishing — all the while covering the events that are also marking their anniversaries this year.

ant to delve into the past of Qualicum Beach? The Qualicum Beach Historical and Museum Society invites you to the museum at 587 Beach Road located across from the train station. The museum chronicles the history of Qualicum Beach with a fascinating collection of objects displayed in period settings. The museum also features a grand mural by local artists depicting the early days of the Village. The mural covers three walls of the second floor galleries. In addition the museum maintains an extensive archive of local historical documents, photographs and artifacts. Visitors will find an early
hydro power exhibit and an E&N railway exhibit. Another feature of the museum is that it houses one of the finest collections of fossils in Western Canada. Consisting primarily of fossils found in British Columbia, the collection was assembled and is currently curated by the internationally known fossil collector Graham Beard, in conjunction with the Vancouver Island Paleontology Museum Society. Admission is by donation. For more info. on hours of operation phone 250-752-5533 or visit www.qbmuseum.net The Old School House (TOSH) in Qualicum is another example of the community spirit that abounds in District 69. The stately old art gallery which sits prominently in the middle of Qualicum Beach Village is celebrating it’s 25th anniversary this year.
The building which was completely renovated and restored by volunteers is now the heart of the village. Inside the 100 year old school house the artwork in the galleries is always changing. Actively used studio spaces are provided for resident artists and on any given day you will see the creation of exquisite pieces of art work in all mediums. There are several artists who work in the studios on the lower level as well and an extensive gift shop featuring the works over over 150 local artisans. If you feel like immersing yourself in a bygone era you might want to visit the Coombs Museum which opened in August 2011. Located in an historic house that is attached to the Coombs General Store the museum is operated solely by volunteers. And while the exhibits at the quaint museum may be modest, the history behind them is rich. Sharon Cox-Gustavson who grew up in the area has worked tirelessly to bring Coomb’s past to the public. hen visitors set a course for Central Vancouver Island, many of them have visions of sandy beaches in mind. However, those in the know also make sure to take along a good pair of hiking boots as well as their flipflops. There’s a good reason for this. With Mount Arrowsmith looming majestically over the area and forests filled with giant, mossy trees, it has become known to many as a hiker’s paradise. From an ocean side stroll to alpine trekking.
For those who want a major helping of Vancouver island forest majesty without a whole lot of effort, they can find it with just a short drive along Highway 4 to Cathedral Grove, where trees that have stood for hundreds of years tower over the easy walking trails. Even if this is the only hike you do on your trip, you’ll undoubtedly return with both photographs and memories that will last a lifetime.
slog, but the view from the top makes all the huffing and puffing worthwhile, with vistas of both sides of Vancouver Island at the peak.
Not all the wilderness is so easily accessed though. A hike up the Judge’s route on Mount Arrowsmith is a tough uphill
Indeed, Qualicum Beach residents are justifiably ›››
Too tough? Too easy? No need to fret. The area has a wealth of choices that fit cozily in between.
›››› proud of their extensive trail network in the town, which allow residents and visitors alike to access most parts of the community through lush forest paths. CONTINUED PG 32
Visitors will also want to make a point of setting their course for Englishman River Falls Provincial Park in Errington, which features a remarkable vista of thundering torrents from a footbridge spanning the falls.

On a really hot day, visitors will want to get the inside scoop on where the locals go to cool off, and there’s a good chance that will take them to the Regional District of Nanaimo’s Top Bridge Regional Park, which features superb swimming amongst truly spectacular scenery.

CAVES
Horne Lake Provincial & Regional Park
F
or an increasing number of people around B.C., fun and adventure is moving from the sun, sand and surf to something much darker, deep underground — and the Horne Lake Caves is where they go to find it. Horne Lake Regional Park offers something more than just an interesting, fun experience, although it has that in spades. What it also offers though is a real sense of adventure and wonder, something visitors will be telling their friends and family about for years to come. Located north of Qualicum Beach off Highway 19, the park is owned by the Regional District of Nanaimo, but operated by a private company.
The park boasts fine camping and a crystal clear lake that’s ideal for or swimming. However,, the main attraction has to be the caves. s. Whether visitors explore two open caves for just the rental cost of a helmet and light — highly recommended — or decide to take their adventure to new depths with a guided tour of the world-famous Riverbend cave, there is something to be had for anyone’s level of daring.
Indeed, with the addition of a new interpretive centre and theatre complex at the site, even those who have a fear of cramped spaces or who are physically uns able to scramble over rocks in a the underground can get a realistic t impression of the wonders lurking deep below their feet. Whichever option they choose, visitors will undoubtedly thank you for showing them one of the most popular attractions on Vancouver Island — and it’s likely they will return to show their friends. For more info. about Horne Lake Regional Park, visit www.hornelake.com or call 250-248-7829

ART & GALLERIES
PHOTO BY MONK Artist Monk painting on Parksville Beach
here’s a thriving artistic community in the area, where the moderate climate and wonderful scenery brings creative people to the Island to continue and hone their works. While the Island is known for its’ many galleries, both commercial and personal, both Parksville and Qualicum Beach are artistic hubs that display the very best the region has to offer. McMillan Arts Centre (The MAC) In Parksville, the McMillan Arts Centre (MAC) has been operating since 1976 from headquarters at 133 McMillan Street. (mcmillanartscentre.com). With three exhibition spaces focused on visual arts, a gift shop, and a calendar of special events programming,
MAC is well known to locals as a focal point for exhibition and performance. The building features monthly music recitals and offers space for workshops and rehearsals. There’s even a small space dedicated to showcasing the work of photographers. Through innovative programming like a summer youth arts camp and sponsorship of local arts awards, the dedicated board members and volunteers at The MAC aim to encourage art and culture as integral part of a well rounded lifestyle. Admission to the MAC is free, donations welcomed. Hourse: Tues .- Sat. 10am4pm, closed Sun., Mon., & stat. holidays.

The centre is a focal point for art in the community, and over 30,000 visitors cross their threshold every year, from every corner of the world. A unique aspect of TOSH is the resident artists’ studio where painters, sculptors and more work in a variety of mediums allowing visitors first hand perspective on the artistic process.
