Albion application moving forward Wynnyk’s want to remove 31 acres from Agricultural Land Reserve by P hil Mel nyc hu k staff reporter

The property (in blue) is located west of 105th Avenue, across from Planet Ice in east Maple Ridge.
One application for agricultural land in the Albion flats is about to go to council, with possibly two more to follow. An application to exclude from the land reserve 31 acres owned by Steve and John Wynnyk should get to Maple Ridge council by the third week of May, John said Friday.

own applications for excluding the property from the Agricultural Land Reserve, while the District of Maple Ridge works on an application for removing land on the east side of 105th. The district’s advice contradicts the Agricultural Land Commission’s previous statements that land west of 105th Avenue should remain farmland, in the reserve. John Wynnyk said the other two major owners of land west of 105th Avenue, Smart Centres and a numbered B.C. company, each have their own consultants preparing an application. See Flats, p3

Notification signs have to go up on the property, he added. As well, newspaper advertisements have to notify the public for a certain period before Maple Ridge council can consider the application. Council has the authority to forward such an application to the Agricultural Land Commission, or kill it completely. Wynnyk said their application will be to remove 31 acres from the land reserve for development for business or light industrial use. “I’m hopeful,” he said. Ridge home show attracts 22,000 Staff help overcome wet weather and emergency evacuations
Widening and rebuilding four blocks of 232nd Street likely will start this year, after council considered Tuesday a $728,000 contract to Keywest Asphalt. If approved, the contract will see widening the road to four lanes from 124th to 128th avenues. A sidewalk will be built on the east side of the road and bike lanes will run in both directions. The road is considered key in Maple Ridge, connecting to Silver Valley, Golden Ears Provincial Park, and UBC Research Forest. A new roundabout at 132nd Avenue and a new bridge over the South Alouette River already have been completed. Work will start this month, including the laying of corridor for fibre-optic cable.
by Colleen Flanagan staff reporter Despite on-again, off-again rain and two evacuations on Saturday, the Ridge Meadows Home Show went smoothly over the weekend. Around 22,000 people passed through the doors of the Home Show over three days, and an additional 3,000 people came out for the outdoor family festival alone. Cassandre Winder, Ridge Meadows Home Show project coordinator, credited staff for ensuring the annual event’s success. “The weather was, of course, a huge challenge because we were covering the grounds and then bailing water off the grounds and then putting plastic back down on the grounds and then pulling the plastic back up and then putting it back down and then bailing and draining,” said Winder. Also on Saturday, Planet Ice and the Golden Ears Winter Club had to be evacuated twice due to a malfunctioning fire alarm. “It appears that it was just a maintenance overdue [issue],” Winder added, “one of the sensors that monitors particulates in the air.” However, “We got to see just how effective all our pre-show safety planning was. And on two occasions we had the entire building evacuated in under three minutes. Which we are told is absolutely record-breaking for venues of that size.” None of the interruptions prevented Jarret Myers from winning the Heather Hills Golf Course longest drive competition, hitting a ball 317 yards. That event was new to the home show this year. Applications have already started pouring in for next year’s show and Winder is already planning more new additions. One of the things she is looking at is a project that will tie in with wellness called The Fountain of Truth. She would also like to gather a group of professionals that represent all areas of anti-aging and well-being. Winder would also like to introduce BMX riding to the Home Show, especially considering how popular the Western Yamaha Rider’s Academy was this year. Four hundred children got the opportunity to try riding a motorcycle in a safe atmosphere. Winder would also like to introduce an outdoor fashion show. “We just have to look around and see what people are into in their lives and reflect it back to them.” • To fill out an application for a spot in next years show go to www.ridgemeadowshomeshow.com.

“Possibly three applications coming in’ for Albion flats Flats from front Smart Centres owns land along the Lougheed Highway, while a numbered company owns property, about 20 acres, on the north side of Albion flats. “There are possibly three applications coming in,” said Tony Pellett, with the land commission. He said the commission was “somewhat emphatic” that land on the west side of 105th Avenue
232nd Street will be fixed up, widened
should remain farmland, “but we never prejudge what’s coming in.” Council earlier this year told landowners to make their own applications for the west side of 105th Avenue even after sending its own concept plan to the commission and receiving advice that the west side should remain farmland. If the commission rejects the private applications, Maple Ridge can continue with its own application
to exclude land on the east side of 105th for recreational development, a use that’s already received tacit approval of the land commission. The option selected by council could delay decisions for the area by a few months, compared to Maple Ridge simply applying to exclude land from the east side, which could see an ALC decision by September. Mayor Ernie Daykin said earlier
he wanted council to see the applications for the west side by May. Last year, the ALC said land on the west side of 105th Avenue should remain farmland after it reviewed Maple Ridge’s plan calling for development of all of the Albion flats, for commercial, business and recreational uses. The plan was developed after public consultation over several months.
Smoothing in works for Abernethy Repairs are in the works for Abernethy Way to make it easier to move east and west along the commuter route. An open house Tuesday at municipal hall got the public’s views on the $1.4-million project that will see traffic signals and left-turn lanes at 227th, 228th and 230th streets and Abernethy. Federal and provincial grants are helping with the cost of the project. If there’s enough money left over after the road improvements, a separate, multi-use trail for cyclists and pedestrians will also be extended from 224th to 232nd streets. The trail already runs for a few metres, on the north side of Abernethy, just east of 224th St. R.F. Binnie & Associates is preparing the detailed design of the intersection improvements and multiuse path. If the public likes the ideas, the work will be done this year.

$1.4 million extra for SD42 From Learning Improvement Fund by R o b e r t M a n g e l s d o r f staff reporter School District No. 42 is getting $1.4 million in additional funding from the province to help teachers cope with overcrowded classrooms. The money is part of the provincial government’s Learning Improvement Fund, first announced last year and included in the Liberals’ Bill 22, which sent striking teachers back to work in March. While Bill 22 gets rid of district-wide limits on class size averages, the caps for individual classes still remain. The money is earmarked to pay for additional teachers, special education assistants, mentoring, relief time, added prep time, shared teaching, even teacher pay bonuses, should a class not conform to the provincial caps. Previously, there was no specific funding set aside for class size and composition issues by the province.
“We [School District No. 42] budgeted for it, but many other districts did not,” said deputy superintendent Laurie Meston. Should a classroom exceed 30 students, teachers are eligible for additional compensation, in the form of additional preparation time, professional development funding, classroom supplies or equipment, or even additional pay. Classes exempt from class limits are adult continuing education classes, online classes, alternate programs, grad transition and leadership classes, music and performing arts classes, work/study programs, and specialty academies. Meston said non-conforming class sizes are only an issue at the secondary level, and under the consultation process, teachers and school administrators would have to agree to a class plan, which would then be approved by a committee made up of members of the Maple Ridge Teachers’ Association and school district staff. “As long as I’m in this chair, we’ll never have an intermediate class with
30 kids,” she said. The added funding will also mean the local school district will be able to put staff in place in the spring prior to the start of the school year, instead of having to wait until after school starts in September. “We’re hoping it won’t be quite as scrambly,” said Meston. New legislation also requires teachers and school administrators to consult and collaborate to determine appropriate class organization and placement of special needs students. “We have a base build on thanks to years of working collaboratively with the Maple Ridge Teachers’ Association,” said Meston. Previously, consultation was required only in cases where there were more than three students with special needs in a given class or when a Grades 4-to-12 class exceeded the 30-student limit. In all, the provincial government is spending $60 million this year and next on the Learning Improvement Fund, with a bump to $75 million in 2014.

Unmasked The federal government has supported a private member’s bill that would make it a crime to wear a disguise while taking part in a riot. Bill C-309 – the Concealment of Identity Act – was tabled by Alberta Conservative MP Blake Richards and endorsed by the government on Sunday. It would amend two sections of the Criminal Code covering penalties for taking part in a riot or violent protest, criminalizing the use of masks. You could get up to five years in prison for wearing one of Stephen Harper while torching cars or looting stores. The bill is meant to give police another tool to break up uncivil gatherings, as seen recently with students unhappy in Quebec over rising tuition fees, and disgruntled fans of the Vancouver Canucks after they lost Game 7 of the 2011 Stanley Cup final. But what constitutes a mask? One like Cory Schneider wears, or those worn by doctors? Scarves and hoodies? Groucho Marx glasses? What about the gas masks police officers wear? If someone covers their face with grease paint, does that count as concealing one’s identity? Regardless, the proposal does not threaten the right to peaceful protest, as some might suggest. Rather it ensures it. There is no need to conceal one’s identity during a peaceful demonstration. No need to bring a change of clothes either, although we’ve seen images of protesters doing so after a bunch of windows were just smashed. If this bill helps bring people involved in such criminal activity to justice, or prevents it, then so be it. Save the masks for Halloween. – The News Tell us what you think @ www.mapleridgenews.com

Tanker debate sinks to new low VICTORIA – The B.C. NDP has ramped up its opposition to the proposed Northern Gateway oil pipeline. First the party formalized objections already expressed by NDP MLAs who have spoken at hearings held by the federal review panel B.C. Views along the B.C. coast. Tom Fletcher Leader Adrian Dix sent an 11-page letter to the panel, then launched an attack on the B.C. Liberal government in the legislature that emphasized the letter’s top objection. Why doesn’t Premier Christy Clark stand up to Ottawa and protest the abandonment of the long-standing “moratorium and exclusion zone” on oil tankers off B.C.’s north coast, Dix and NDP energy critic Rob Fleming demanded. Clark’s answer was the same one given for many years by federal and provincial governments. The 1972 federal “moratorium” was directed at offshore oil drilling, not tankers bound for B.C. A separate Canada-U.S. agreement in 1998 calls for U.S. tankers to avoid B.C.’s Inside Passage as they transport Alaska crude oil to refineries in Washington state and further south. I asked Fleming for documentation that shows tankers are banned from B.C.’s north coast. He said it is “fragmented,” which means he doesn’t have any. Nor does the NDP’s heavily foot-
noted letter to the federal panel offer any source for this assertion. This argument flared up in 2006 after Methanex Corp. shut down its Kitimat methanol plant. Instead of shipping methanol out, a practice that was never questioned, it started bringing tankers into the Kitimat port loaded with a liquid natural gas by-product called condensate. From there it is sent by rail to Alberta to dilute oil sands crude. This process led to Enbridge’s proposed double pipeline that would send condensate east and diluted crude west. The Dogwood Initiative, one of the multiple U.S.-funded groups that now dominate B.C.’s environmental lobby, rose to protest these early condensate shipments, saying they violate a moratorium on tankers. Wrong, said Don Rodden, superintendent of environmental response for the Canadian Coast Guard Pacific Region. The 1972 moratorium “wouldn’t apply to vessels coming into Canadian ports like Kitimat,” Rodden told the Globe and Mail at the time. The Coast Guard would be the agency legally required to enforce such a tanker ban, if one existed. As I’ve mentioned before, there are legitimate arguments against the Northern Gateway proposal. This hippy-fantasy tanker moratorium isn’t one of them. Then there is the hypocrisy and proU.S. bias that is so clearly evident in the manipulated B.C. debate. The Northern Gateway pipeline would generate as many as 350 tanker trips each year to and from Kitimat. More than twice that many tankers already sail each year through the Strait of Juan de Fuca, past the Gulf and San Juan Islands.
Many are heading to refinery complexes at March Point and Cherry Point in Washington. These supertankers can be seen sailing past Victoria most days. Strangely, this U.S. crude traffic excites no protests. Some of the smaller tankers come in to fill up from the Trans-Mountain pipeline in Burnaby, whose operator is preparing a bid for expansion. This attracts protests organized by people paid to oppose Alberta “tar sands” oil.
Where do urban protesters think we get the gasoline and diesel fuel sold at B.C. filling stations? Where do urban protesters think we get the gasoline and diesel fuel sold at B.C. filling stations? Do they think it’s all made at the little Chevron refinery in Burnaby, the last remnant of refining capacity in southern B.C.? We could use a serious debate about how B.C. handles petroleum. Ignorance along river is bliss Lighten up over street parking
EDITOR, THE NEWS:
Re: Maple Ridge needs to fill the gap (Commentary, May 4). I was strolling down the path this Friday, skipping along, singing a song. Everything was sunshine and lollipops. What a wonderful day in la-la land. Then all of the sudden, my stride was broken by a sawmill. What the heck was this unsightly behemoth doing in my perfect hop along my dreamy Fraser River trail? So, with a small grey cloud over my lazy journey, I made a short walk around this inexplicable obstruction. Then once again, I broke into song. Whistling and skipping. With my head in the clouds and my mind in neutral, I happily hiked along to the beat of my wonderful song. Then suddenly, I came upon a dock. There were fishermen. And women, too. They impeded my happy trails for a minute or two and I thought this just won’t do. Perhaps our government ought to do something to ensure my trails are without travails. Heck, with a few million, there’s nothing we couldn’t do. So I exited my happy trail and hunted down my MLA to hound, and for good measure, our mayor, too. Much to my surprise, they informed me, that without the tax generators that come from wood and water we couldn’t fund the ‘happy trails initiative.’ This was bad news for my happy trails dream. How would I make my
fantasy of being able to occasionally walk from Vancouver to Hope all along the mighty Fraser, a reality? Well, I became so incensed and told them that if I cannot walk from Vancouver to Hope unimpeded, I would have to hold my nose and vote for someone who cared about my human rights. Oh, how I begged and I pleaded. Yet, they held their ground. But to ignorance I was bound, and to hell with where our wealth was found. I deserve to at least once, be able to walk from Vancouver to Mission unimpeded. I am, after all, a taxpayer. So off I went on my utopian bent. Looking for supporters to end the irritating industry that threatened my dream and my vent. Unfortunately, I found, that many were directly and indirectly employed by the logging and fishing, as well as other industries that have roots in the river banks. It turns out, the river has been a source of transport and sustenance since the birth of our town. In fact, it’s the first ‘road’ in the area. Just ask the Katzie. They were using it before the Spanish and English thought they ought to claim it. It’s amazing how disappointing a walk can be. Maybe it’s true. Ignorance is bliss. From now on, I’ll take the high road and avoid so many complications. GRANT BAKER MAPLE RIDGE

Re: Permits for residential parking? (The News, May 2). I am one of those people who park in a residential area near the hospital instead of paying the excessive daily per diem to Impark. I notice many hospital staff do the same. I also live in an area close to a school and near a West Coast Express train station and have no problem with people parking near my home, as long as our driveway is not blocked. Most of the residents near the hospital have large driveways with enough room to accommodate four to six vehicles, and the public street parking seem to be busy only from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. After that, there is lots of on-street parking. Many of the residents are probably at work during that time, so I don’t see the public abusing this space. There is a bylaw sign indicating that vehicles must be parked three metres away from driveways, and people have been ticketed fro infractions. The majority of the public using these spaces respect the guidelines. Seems to me that speeding along 117 Avenue is a much bigger concern than people trying

Extra from front “I was thrilled to see the number of people interested in joining the Extra Foods team,” said store owner Doug Bell. With the majority of positions filled, Bell said he is now getting his new employees trained and ready to go for the re-opening next week. In all, the store will employ close to 90 people, with 50 strikers returning to work at the store. Staff have been working around the clock to restock the store, a process that takes two to three weeks to complete. The picket line in front of the store came down April 20 after workers voted 93 per cent in favour of accepting a new six-year contract with Loblaw Companies Limited, the parent company of Extra Foods. In December 2008, 75 employees at the store went on strike after rejecting a contract offer from Loblaw that would have seen their wages cut nearly in half. United Food and Commercial Workers union members had been working at the store under an expired contract since 2004, with longtime workers making in the $20-per-hour range, with benefits. The contract Loblaw had initially offered would have seen most workers would top out at $11.90 per hour, with no benefits. Under the new contract, workers at the store will get a small bump in pay, retroactive to 2004.
Maple Ridge may try for Summer Games Maple Ridge should try to host the B.C. Summer Games, either in 2016 or 2018, staff are advising council. Politicians were to vote Tuesday on whether to tell staff to prepare a bid to host the amateur event. “It’s been ... years since we hosted the last one and 1998 was really successful,” said Maple Ridge Mayor Ernie Daykin.

pital after crashing at Pitt Meadows airport Sunday morning. The plane landed in a ditch before bursting into flames shortly after take off around 7:40 a.m. The pilot was pulled from the plane and taken to hospital suffering minor burns. Airport operations manager James Neale said the pilot was based out of Pitt Meadows. The airplane he was flying is known as a kit plane, an aircraft built using an assembly kit. The Transportation Safety Board is investigating what caused the plane to crash. Neale said it’s a misnomer to call the aircraft “home-made.” “I don’t want people to think there’s a rogue pilot building airplanes in his garage and flying them at will,” he added. “It was a replica aircraft and there are lots of those kinds of aircrafts around. They have to be inspected. It’s not like your kid building a go-cart in your garage.” Transport Canada inspects all “amateurbuilt” aircrafts before they are allowed to fly.

Off-duty officer nabs drunk driver staff reporter An Ridge Meadows RCMP ofďŹ cer helped take a drunk driver off the road on Sunday while off duty in Agassiz. Cpl. Todd Balaban saw a car narrowly miss hitting several vehicles before the driver pulled stopped at the Sasquatch Inn. Balaban then placed the man under arrest for impaired driving. Police allege the driver became uncooperative and refused to comply with Cpl. Balaban, so a Vancouver ďŹ reďŹ ghter stepped in to help him restrain the man until a RCMP ofďŹ cer from the Upper Fraser Valley Regional Detachment arrived. “Even though police enjoy their time off, we are always alert to our surroundings. In this case, our police ofďŹ cer felt the safety of the public was in jeopardy by the way the man was driving, and that he had to stop this from continuing,â€? said Cpl. square feet in area to keep up to two hives. The Hobby Beekeeping Bylaw was expected to get third reading, while a zoning bylaw change allowing the bee, was to get second reading, then be sent on to public hearing. Mayor Ernie Daykin expects council to give the go ahead and pass third reading so it can get to final reading in a few weeks. Staff and council had been concerned that beehives would attract bears, but Daykin said the conservation service has said garbage, rather than bee hives, is the main attractant. A staff report also notes that large-scale beekeeping takes place in farm areas where bears are around and there are few encounters involving bears. Because of bees’ role in pollinating fruit and berry crops, the Ministry of Agriculture provides technical and scientific help to cities that allow residential beekeeping. For instance, the ministry suggests that entrances to the honey bee hives should be facing the centre of the property so that bees gain altitude before they get close to property lines. The report also points out that Maple Ridge should allow bee hives on the top of commercial or public or even residential buildings and that some high schools set up bee hives as study projects. However, the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows school district doesn’t support allowing beekeeping, citing health and safety concerns of staff and students. “Really, it came down to a matter of student safety, because the bee stings can be fatal,â€? to some students, said spokesperson Irena Pochop. Burnaby, the city and district of North Vancouver, Vancouver, West Vancouver and New Westminster all allow beekeeping based on a bylaw passed in 2000 in New Westminster. The hives will have to be built 2.5 metres above the ground or be surrounded by a hedge or fence that’s at least two metres high to prevent wildlife access. Council had considered the bylaw in 2010 then referred it to the school district for comment last September.

Haney Farmers Market closes in Pitt

staff reporter Haney Farmer’s Market Society has cancelled the Pitt Meadows location where farmer’s food and handicrafts were sold Sunday mornings for the past two years. “We enjoyed our market in Pitt Meadows. The park at Spirit Square is a beautiful location with lots of parking and central to a growing community,” said Bernice Gehring, society chair. But owing to several factors, it’s not feasible to hold a farmer’s market at this time, she said a release. People can learn all about how to stay safe and survive the aftermath of a flood, forest fire or earthquake at a free emergency preparation session, this Thursday, May 10. The District of Maple Ridge is hosting the event, no charge, in its council chambers. Each of the sessions will take about 90 minutes and have emergency program Barb Morgan review basic steps. Advance registration is needed. Call 604-467-7477. “Every time there is a natural disaster in the world, the interest in personal emergency preparedness becomes elevated. I strongly urge everyone to take advantage of the opportunity to get some really wellthought out and practical information so that you can be prepared,” said Mayor Ernie Daykin in a release. People not only have to prepared to survive the initial event, but the days or weeks
after when basic services may no longer exist. Morgan pointed out that interest in planning jumped last year following the earthquakes in Japan and New Zealand. The district is already checking levels of the Fraser River as the big melt begins following another year of heavy snowfall in the mountains and Interior. Snow conditions are similar to those in 2007, which is the last time the Fraser River threatened to flood. Based on the weather conditions and information from the B.C. River Forecast Centre, staff will activate parts of the Emergency Response Plan relating to neighbourhood meetings in areas where there may be a flooding risk. The Fraser freshet, or runoff, typically peaks in June. This year, Facebook and Twitter will get out information instantly, (using the name yourmapleridge) as well as its website, and newspaper ads to get out its information.

A road home for homeless youth by R o b e r t M a n g e l s d o r f staff reporter Homeless youth in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows will have a place to turn to thanks to a new program aimed at giving them the life skills to avoid ending up on the streets and find them stable housing. The Alouette Home Start Society’s Route 29 program is getting underway this month, and will offer temporary housing for up to six months for people aged 17 to 24 at risk of ending up on the streets at a new four-bedroom facility in Maple Ridge. The program was made possible thanks to $260,000 in funding from the Vancouver Foundation, while the four-bedroom house was donated by the District of Maple Ridge. The program also has funding from B.C. Housing to provide eligible young people with income supplements in order to pay their rent. The Route 29 program takes its name from the fact that there were 29 homeless youth counted in Maple Ridge during the last Lower Mainland homeless count last year. But that number is just the tip of the iceberg, says coordinator Nichole Wismer. “It’s not just downtown, and it’s not as visible,” she said. “But kids are resourceful and they look out for each other.” As a result, homeless youth are more likely to “couch surf,” then end up on the streets. But often those places aren’t a safe place for them to stay. “We want to give them somewhere where they can pursue their goals and dreams,” said Wismer. The program is still in its development phase, but executive director Stephanie Ediger said the scope of Route 29 will extend far beyond the transition house. “It encompasses a whole lot more than find-
ing them a place to live,” she said. “The program is about life skills, and giving young people the support they need.” Affordable housing is few and far between in Maple Ridge, especially for young people, and in order to maintain housing, you need job skills, as well as social skills. “Many landlords aren’t willing to rent to young people,” said Ediger. Part of Wismer’s job will be to help the young people in the program learn those life skills many take for granted. Things like making a monthly budget, proper nutrition and how to shop, and how to take advantage of what social supports are available. For many 19-year-olds confronted with the bureaucracy of social assistance, the experience can be overwhelming, and many end up not taking advantage. Wismer said she’ll be working with homeless youth to guide them through the maze of red tape. The young people taking part in the program will be referred by local agencies Alouette Home Start Society has partnered with, such as the local school district and Alouette Addictions. Ediger said she expects many of the young people to go through the program to be fresh out of foster care. “There a lot of kids aging out of foster care and they’re on their own and left to fend for themselves,” she said. “Once you turn 19, that’s it.” Ediger said Route 29 will help provide a bridge between the Alouette Home Start Society’s Iron Horse Youth Safe House, which offers temporary supportive housing for 30 days at a time for teenagers, and their soon to be opened “It’s a natural extension,” said Ediger. “And at the end, they will have the tools to live on their own and be successful in life.” • alouettehomestart.com

staff reporter The provincial government has released a series of online videos aimed at helping local governments and communities become more age-friendly. These new videos, available online at www.seniorsbc.ca/agefriendly/afbc_video, highlight how several B.C. communities have taken action to become more accommodating to seniors. Almost one-sixth of B.C.’s population is over 65 years old and the number of seniors living in B.C is expected to almost
double over the next 20 years. In an age-friendly community, B.C. seniors are supported to live active, sociallyengaged and independent lives. An agefriendly community provides welcoming public spaces, accessible transportation, affordable housing options and employment and volunteer opportunities. These communities also provide information and services which fit the needs of seniors. For older people, living in an age-friendly community can help them continue to lead active, independent and healthy lives. See Healthy, p17
Senior Star comes to Willow Manor staff reporter Chartwell’s annual Senior Star talent competition is coming to Willow Senior Living Residence on June 20. Local contestants 65 years and older can compete for the opportunity to participate as a Top 10 finalist in the annual Senior Star National Finale, taking place in Niagara Falls this November. During the regional competitions, contestants are given a maximum of five minutes to sing a song, play an instrument, or do both, and their performance is videotaped. Musical accompaniment is provided to singing contestants, if required. A panel of
three judges, made up of local musical experts, government officials, and media representatives choose the top three local contestants, each of whom will be recognized with a Senior Star trophy. Videos of the first and second place winners from across Canada are then submitted to a celebrity panel of judges who will narrow the list to nine competitors invited to compete in the Senior Star National Final. Members of the public are invited to attend the local event on June 20, which will be hosted by Elvis Presley impersonator Steve Elliott. • For more information, or to register, visit www.chartwellreit.ca.

Exploring Northwest Coast New exhibition focuses on the painted works of Haisla artist Lyle Wilson staff reporter newsroom@mapleridgenews.com
O
ver two decades, Lyle Wilson has completed over 70 paintings on canvas, red cedar and rag matboard, ranging in size from a nine-foot high banner to a panel that fits in the palm of his hand. Despite the large body of work, painting is one of the most “stressful” mediums Wilson practices. The physical act of carving relieves tension, while painting an image is painstakingly built brush stroke by brush stroke. Often Wilson finds himself holding his breath for long periods until a series of brush strokes is finished. His sense of dread only alleviated by the pure joy of finishing a painted work. “What you see hear is probably the end of my painting,” says Wilson during a tour at the Maple Ridge Art Gallery where Paint, an exhibition featuring 40 of his paintings opened on Saturday. “I get a lot more satisfaction whacking away at a piece of wood than painting.” Born in 1955, Wilson was raised in the Haisla community of Kitamaat and went on to study fine arts and education at both the University of British Columbia and the Emily Carr College of Art and Design. He also undertook an intensive exploration of what he refers to as “the classic Northwest Coast style” while working as a commissioned artist at the Museum of Anthropology at UBC.
“We want these stories to be shared for a greater understanding of Northwest culture.” Barbara Duncan, curator
The artist’s 20-year association with museum enabled him to study the work of past masters and develop his own understanding and interpretation of the style of painting popularly known as formline. Paint is the first major exhibition to focus exclusively on Wilson’s paintings and to assemble such a significant body of his work. Wilson is so a renowned and accomplished carver in wood and metal. Many of the works on display are unique and personalized images of coastal creatures such as orcas and ravens, the undersea world, and several stylized maps of Aboriginal territories. The exhibition reveals with equal force a contemporary voice that evokes the artist’s concern for the environment and the indigenous

When these pressing themes share space with the historical visual language he has mastered, the two forces are sometimes intriguingly – if uncomfortably – juxtaposed. This is especially apparent in Wilson’s innovative “word paintings,” in which graceful formline figures are morph into the letters of the English alphabet and numerals. The visual play is extended further in instances where the painted words are rendered in the indigenous Haisla language, offering a succinct and ironic comment on the lack of congruity between Haisla and European cultural values. “There are these incredible stories behind the paintings. We want these stories to be shared for a greater understanding of Northwest culture,” explains gallery curator Barb Duncan. “[Wilson] is sharing so much. He is also leading the way and showing that that doesn’t harm the culture at all, in fact it leads to more understanding.”
An 80-page, illustrated catalogue accompanying the exhibition is also a first for Wilson’s career, as it offers not only a comprehensive visual record of the exhibition, but some 30 essays by the artist that shed light on the paintings. Throughout his essays are over 80 different Haisla words and their translations into English, reflecting Wilson’s commitment to doing all he can to preserve and promote the strengthening of the language among his own Haisla people. • Paint is at the Maple Ridge Art Gallery until July 28.

Pitt author in Rick Hansen relay Award-winning author Gordon Kirkland will be the official medal bearer for the Pitt Meadows leg of The Rick Hansen 25th Anniversary Relay. Kirkland built a successful career as an author after suffering a spinal cord injury in a 1990 automobile accident. He successfully moved from a wheelchair to crutches clipped onto his forearms for 18 of the last 22 years. He is now once again confined to a wheelchair. He is currently a patient in Eagle Ridge Hospital with an undisclosed condition but will be allowed to temporarily leave the hospital to participate in the event. His wife Diane and his son Mike will assist him along the way if necessary. “I guess now that I am permanently on wheels, they will have to be my pit crew,” he said. “Hopefully, they won’t have to put a hydraulic jack under me and pull off my tires.” Called “one of North America’s premier humorists,’ Kirkland’s mission is to show that while a spinal cord injury may impact several senses, it does not have to affect one’s sense of humour. On May 17, the medal will travel from Maple Ridge to Pitt Meadows. Kirkland will wheel it from the corner of 119th Avenue and Harris Road to Pitt Meadows Spirit Square starting shortly after noon. • -The celebration at Spirit Square in Pitt Meadows runs from 11:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m.
