Kamloops man killed at Plateau Mill Ruth Lloyd
Fiddler on the roof
Caledonia Courier A millwright killed while on the job at the Plateau Mill in Vanderhoof has been identified and a preliminary investigation released. George Park Jr., of Kamloops, B.C., was the maintenance worker who died in what appears at this point to be a tragic accident. He was an independent subcontractor to Nechako Construction (a division of the BID Group) and his family has done work for the BID Group for years, according to BID CEO Brian Fehr. “I know his dad and his two brothers have worked for me and I’ve talked to all of them today,” said Fehr. While only preliminary, it appears the death, which happened early in the morning on Thursday, May 3, was the result of an unsecured gate. While on shift at the mill doing some routine scheduled maintenance welding on two conveyor belts, the millwright had shut off power and the hydraulics on the two machines. However, a heavy gate which separated sections of the machines was not properly secured in addition to the hydraulics being shut off, and with gravity, it appears it may have fallen over onto the worker and crushed him between the gate and the wall of the conveyor. “That’s preliminary, but that’s what I’m hearing tonight,” said Fehr. The accident took place sometime between 3:30 a.m. when Park commenced the work and 4 a.m. when he failed to appear for a lunch break and coworkers went to locate him, finding him under the gate. Further investigation will be taking place to confirm these findings. WorkSafeBC, RCMP and BC Coroner’s Service were on site on May 3 to assess the site and interview workers on shift during the accident. So far, interviews with coworkers suggest the gate had been secured in previous maintenance activities. BID has committed to meeting with workers to review the findings of the incident with workers in additional safety meetings.

Trinda Elwert It was great to see the community come together for the fourth Annual Vanderhoof Community Clean-Up on Saturday, April 21. This event was organized by the Nechako Waste Reduction Initiative (NWRI), with the Nechako Valley Food Network (NVFN) coordinating the local food BBQ. Approximately 115 volunteers came together to pitch in and pick up litter throughout our town, and afterwards enjoyed a well-deserved BBQ, “on the house comprised of locally made sausages and buns. The end result was over four truckloads of garbage removed from the
town, and one truckload of recyclable returnables. This was all accomplished within two hours of community effort. Way to go Vanderhoof! A great big thank you goes out to our sponsors for the treats, warm drinks and food; to the District of Vanderhoof for providing bags and gloves; the Brownies & Sparks who beautifully coloured the posters, Katimavik for their volunteer help, and of course all of the volunteers for cleaning up our town!
This event was the first in a series of “Green Events planned by NWRI and NVFN (both part of the Nechako Healthy Community Alliance) where we will be focusing on minimizing
waste and serving local food. To keep waste to a minimum, the NWRI’s green toolkit was used. The green toolkit is a set of reusable dishes (plates, glasses, cutlery & bowls) available for

New $20 polymer bank note The new polymer $20 bank note was revealed last week by the Bank of Canada. The most common note in circulation, the new, more durable note will join the previously released $100 and $50 notes as Canadian money becomes more durable and more difficult to counterfeit. Canadians can now feel comfortable in the knowledge their money will not be destroyed should they forget it in their pocket when they jump in the water this summer. Their cellphones, however, are another matter.

Express Locals ride the Freedom Train Ruth Lloyd Caledonia Courier Local First Nations representatives are riding the Freedom Train - to Toronto. The Freedom Train is an initiative by the Yinka Dene Alliance, a group of Carrier and Sekani First Nations in northern B.C., and is a trip organized by the group to give attention to their opposition to the proposed Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipeline Project. “It seems like they never get the message, no matter how many times we’ve told them no,” said Geraldine Thomas-Flurer, one of the coordinators of the effort for the Yinka Dene Alliance. Chief Dolly Abraham of Takla Lake First Nation, Chief Jackie Thomas of Saik’uz First Nation, Chief Martin Louie of Fraser Lake, Hereditary Chief Tsoh Dih (Peter Erickson), Euphrasia Sam, Annie Sam, Cassandra Thomas and Elicia Prince, all of Nak’azdli First Nation, are all on the train bound for Toronto. The idea came from a similar concept, the Constitutional Train, done back in 1980, when First Nations were trying to gain support for the recognition of aboriginal rights and title. Dr. Sophie Thomas, grandmother of Thomas-Flurer, as well as Chief Jackie Thomas (before she was chief) were both on the train in 1980 from Sai’kuz First Nation. The train will be going from northern
B.C. across the country to Canada’s largest city, where the group of about 40 opponents of the project will then rally at Enbridge’s AGM on May 9. There were events scheduled in Jasper, Edmonton, Saskatoon and Winnipeg along the way to raise awareness for their cause and there will be a concert in Toronto on May 8 in solidarity with the group. The group is carrying water from all their different territories and combining it with the water of the places they are visiting in water ceremonies to give thanks and draw attention to water usage and contamination in the tar sands, calling water a non-renewable resource. “I don’t think that anything that Enbridge has to offer is worth the risk,” she said. Thomas-Flurer said the preservation of B.C. as a fairly pristine place is important to keep the tourism and fishing industries alive and to protect the water. “What we are trying to do is for everyone, it’s not a First Nations issue, it’s a human issue,” she said. “We want to keep B.C. beautiful.” Upon the group’s arrival in Edmonton at midnight, they were met at the train station by local First Nations including drumming. When she spoke to The Courier, the group had just finished rallying at the Alberta Legislature to send a message to the Alberta premier she won’t be
able to force the pipeline on B.C., said ThomasFlurer. She cited the recently announced B.C. NDP opposition to the pipeline and said she hopes the communities of Vanderhoof, Fort St. James, Fraser Lake and Burns Lake will come out in opposition to the project as well. The entire contingent on the train is surviving on a shoestring budget, according to ThomasFlurer, but has gotten help with people billeting the group and helping feed them along the way. “We wouldn’t be able to do it without that support,” she said, adding the energy of the group is really high. “If anything, Enbridge has brought our communities together like never before.” She said they have been inspiring First Nations as they go to stand up for their beliefs. “We’re only going to get stronger as we go across Canada,” she said. The group will be presenting the Save the Fraser Declaration to the
executives of Enbridge at the AGM in Toronto, which is a document signed by over 170 First Nations in Canada declaring their opposition to the Northern Gateway Project which would cross the headwaters of the Fraser River. “Water is life, for our peoples and for all living things that depend on it. The Fraser River and its tributaries are our lifeline,” states the declaration. “We call on all who would place our land and waters at risk - we have suffered enough, we will protect our watersheds, and we will not tolerate this great threat to us and to all future generations.” The Yinka Dene Alliance is made up of a coalition of First Nations whose territory covers over 25 per cent of the route of the proposed Northern Gateway project. The project, which would cross over 750 rivers and streams carrying 525,000 barrels of tar sands oil a day 1,177 km from northern Alberta to Kitimat, B.C.. The crossings would include the Fraser, Skeena
and Mackenzie watersheds. The Freedom Train has left the area and will be rallying in To-
ronto the day this paper hits the stands. For more information on their trip, check out: freedomtrain2012.com.

Spring Cleaning with Essential Oils Part 1 of 3 Does anyone remember how back in the day you wouldn’t dream of doing dishes let alone cleaning the house without wearing those brightly colored yellow rubber gloves? The products back then were missing a lot of today’s chemical constituents many of which are unregulated and not necessarily proven to be safe.. so it makes you wonder... what’s changed that our defenses are lowered and we handle more dangerous goods with less protection, and worse yet... less worry? Just because a product is on the shelf doesn`t make it safe. Many cleaners contain corrosive elements, toxic fumes and worse. If dipping your naked hand into a bucket full of potential carcinogens and toxic ingredients doesn`t send shivers up your spine then think about the fact that skin to chemical contact means putting yourself at risk for the absorption of whatever you touch this goes double if propylene glycol is in the ingredient list. Many health problems are eventually related to chemical sensitivities; sensitivities which over time create other problems such as allergies, digestive upsets, skin conditions & rashes that no cream can cure etc. A diet rich in vitamins and minerals (fruits & veggies) while moderating other foods such as sugars can be a big help in helping your body function optimally. The biggest impact one can have on their health is to eliminate any potential causes of contact sensitivities with chemicals and cleaners that may not be safe. When continuously exposed to chemicals over time side effects accumulate. (This series of articles will be about how you can create simple, easy and natural cleaning products without the chemicals as well as which chemical hazards to look out for). If you’re one of those people who just couldn’t bear to let go of that fresh lemon scented cleaner that`s fine. There are pure therapeutic grade essential oils that are well priced, easy to use, and they have some great grime fighting properties. Lemon - If you are using a great amount of the oil and also cleaning with your bare hands (which is perfectly acceptable) it is important to remember that lemon has some great attributes for skin, from cellulite, to antioxidant effects however, it also increases skin sensitivity to sunlight, which means that if you plan to go out in the sun right after using the oils you may inadvertently bleach your skin as lemon is also a natural whitener used to bleach your whites. Young Living Essential Oil tips: Household cleaner: · Fill a spray bottle with water and a squirt of dishwashing soap. · Add 3–5 drops each of lavender, lemon, and pine essential oils. · Shake well Floor cleaner: · Add 1/4 cup white vinegar to a bucket of water. · Add 5–10 drops lemon, pine, spruce, melaleuca, or Purification essential oil. Fighting dust mites: · Recent research has shown that eucalyptus essential oil kills dust mites that live in bedding. · Add 25 drops of eucalyptus essential oil to each load of laundry for an effective dust mite deterrent.

GET READY FOR SUMMER
Vanderhoof was the place to be for Arts and Culture on the week of April 22 – 29. The Nechako Community Arts Council was excited to be involved with so many wonderful events. Monday night, together with the Good Neighbours Committee, we held a “Taste of Culture” event to celebrate the diversity of our community through Culinary Arts and music from other parts of the world. A small group gathered on Tuesday to talk about their experience writing music and the process of developing song lyrics. Wednesday night, we met to talk about the role of art in the community and we enjoyed the input and views of Katimavik volunteers, as they discussed the role of arts in their own communities from across the country as well. Although we could not take credit for the staging of “Fiddler on the Roof”, we supported the event with marketing. The play opened on Thursday evening and has played to sold-out audiences on each of its six performance nights. Friday was Arts Fest day. Jurors Annerose Georgeson and Sandra Nahornoff worked all day long to view and critique the works of 33 emerging artists from Burns Lake, Dome Creek, Fort Fraser, Fort St. James, Fraser Lake, Mackenzie, Prince George and Vanderhoof. Opening night was very well attended by artists and local residents. A fantastic violin duo provided a musical background that was enjoyed by all throughout the evening. As one resident said, “Arts Fest

Look who’s following you everywhere! was the place to be that night.” Saturday was a fantastic day for artists as they received their Certificates of Participation, the jurors’ feedback sheets, Honorary Mention Certificates, and a professional critique of their work. Critiques are particularly valuable for artists as they help them to grow in their artistic careers. On recommendation of the jurors, the Island Mountain Arts scholarship was offered to artist Cathy Harder from Fraser Lake. Should she not be able to attend, artists Anik Provencher and Mary Lynn Lawrence were listed as alternate candidates. The afternoon workshops organized by CIRAC were welcomed by all artists as they were informative and relevant to their needs. We closed our council’s involvement in BC Arts and Culture Week with a music night that welcomed musicians,
amateur and professional, to share their talent. It was a great opportunity for our youth and adults to embrace another form of artistic expression. The “Fiddle on the Roof” had their third performance on Saturday and Sunday the Music Festival Finale took place at the EMC Church. This event was organized by the Vanderhoof Festival Committee. We want to thank the artists, our sponsors, (CIRAC, BID Group, Regional District of Bulkley Nechako, District of Vanderhoof, College of New Caledonia, and Vanderhoof Public Library) and all of the volunteers from all of the participating organizations for their invaluable contributions in making these events so successful. The public can continue to enjoy the art show for the month of May. Drop into CNC and the Public Library to view the works.

Forest Products Manufacturers Establish Safety Task Force British Columbia’s wood products manufacturers have come together in an unprecedented collaboration to advance research and best practices in improving mill safety in response to the devastating explosions at Babine Forest Products and Lakeland Mills. Until we receive the investigation conclusions from WorkSafe BC, we cannot say for certain what caused the events at those two facilities. However, we are told the investigation reports will take months and we feel strongly that the severity of the two incidents demands an immediate and comprehensive safety response. Four members of our sector lost their lives and we will not wait to take action. On Wednesday, the CEOs from the major wood products manufacturing companies in British Columbia gathered to create an action plan for improving safety. Companies including Ainsworth, Interfor, Dunkley Lumber, Western Forest Products, Tolko, Sinclar Group, Hampton Affiliates, Conifex, West Fraser Timber and Canfor resolved to establish a CEO-led task force that will quantify combustion risks related to dust from processing both green and dry wood and identify best practices for dust mitigation from other industries that have issues related to dust in manufacturing. We also committed to developing a set of clear and auditable standards that will be utilized to independently assess the safety of mills across the industry. We will work with experts across disciplines and other stakeholders to ensure these standards are comprehensive and can be relied upon to provide assurance that conditions in mills across British Columbia are safe for workers. Finally, we will be reaching out to every forest products manufacturer in the province, large or small, to expand this initiative to every mill in British Columbia. As the Task Force undertakes their work, each of our companies is taking proactive steps to mitigate all possible fuel and ignition sources in our mills. These significant steps began in January and all of our companies have implemented extensive measures to ensure safety. We welcome the support and collaboration of WorkSafe BC and appreciate government’s swift action to visit every facility in the province. The collective efforts of industry and WorkSafe BC are delivering immediate improvements in safety performance across all British Columbia facilities. As we mourn the lives lost and those changed forever by the explosions at Babine Forest Products and Lakeland Mills, we are taking every possible step to ensure that nothing like this ever occurs at another mill in this province again. We will be reaching out to government and labour to join with us in our efforts, and appreciate the continued support of our employees and our communities. Fiddler was a grand experience To the Readers of the Omineca Express: Can you remember where you spent your very best $10? I can! My husband and I had the privilege of sitting in the audience at the NVSS for the second performance of “Fiddler on the Roof” last Friday evening and we were absolutely astounded at the level of professionalism by all of the cast members. The best $10 I’ve ever spent!!! Years ago (back-in-the-day) we attended a performance of “Fiddler on the Roof” in Her Majesty’s Theatre in London, England and indeed it was exceptional. What with all the qlitz and glamour of a huge theatre,
known world wide, we were so impressed!! However, the acting and music there did not draw us into the story as did the Vanderhoof Community Theatre Society and the NVSS Drama. Sitting in the audience, you were so heavy-hearted for Tevye as the “traditions” started to be eroded. Again you were drawn into the heartache and sorrow felt by the villagers as they prepared to leave the only home they had ever known! An absolutely delightful evening!!! Thank you so much! We’ll be waiting for your next production!! Carnie Webster Cluculz Lake, BC
More wood vs. the woods Editor, I have recently read some information and spoken with our Nechako Lakes MLA John Rustad about his position regarding fibre supply for our mills and his crusade to solve the problem by removing the conservation of other values such as visual quality, old growth forests, and wildlife habitat. These values, which he so easily dismisses, are critical to our quality of life as residents of northern B.C.. Contrary to recent quotes attributed to Mr. Rustad, the communities along Highway 16 are not an industrial corridor and I am offended by the suggestion. Yes, many of us work and earn our livings in or from the forests that surround us, but we also play in that same forest. We need a balance between resource development and quality of life. Our quality of life here in northern B.C. is strongly tied to these values of scenic areas, old growth forests, and wildlife habitat. These values benefit our families and lifestyles; we spend time with our children and parents en-
joying the great outdoors fishing, hunting, hiking, camping, boating etc. These values benefit our homes and businesses; we build and work along rivers and lakes and in the shadows of mountains and tall timbers because of stunning visual scenes and abundant wildlife that northern B.C. has to offer. These values benefit our schools, our health care, and our community services; we offer teachers, health care workers, and other professionals something more fulfilling than a concrete jungle that convinces them to take up residence in our community. These values connect us as a community, we love this land, it’s part of who we are. So Mr. Rustad, please don’t underestimate the value these things have given to us as northerners. Please don’t throw our quality of life away in your vain belief that you have the answer to reverse the effects of the mountain pine beetle epidemic. We need our forest for jobs, but we need our forests for our quality of life too. Dan Brooks Upper Nechako Wilderness Council

Public Rail Safety When it comes to 10,000 tons of moving steel, there is no compromise. Motor vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists are no match for a moving train. People continue to take chances, for instance trespassing on CN tracks and property. Trespassing fatalities in Canada are at a threeyear high. Trespassing is the leading cause of railway fatalities, resulting in 55 deaths in 2010. More than 90 per cent of trespass accidents result in either fatalities or serious accidents. CN Police across Canada are issuing a call to action. The initiative is called “See it, report it.” You can save a life. CN Police urge anyone who sees dangerous or illegal behavior on CN tracks or property to call the CN emergency line at 1-800-464-9239. CN Police feel it is time to engage the public in fighting unsafe activity. According to the Canadian Transportation Safety Board, there was 261 grade crossing and trespass accidents across Canada in 2010, causing 79 deaths and 47 serious injuries. These numbers are higher than 2009 stats. At CN, we will not tolerate people who put their lives and lives of others at risk by disobeying railway signs, signals or by trespassing on railway property. CN Police officers will be identifying high-risk
trespass areas and develop a target enforcement strategy. CN Police will be reaching out to the public through eduction, engineering and enforcement. In British Columbia, trespassing on CN Property carries a fine of $115. O p e r a tion Lifesaver is a unique public-private partnership that promotes awareness to help save lives and reduce suffering from injuries incurred at highway/railway crossings and from trespassing on railway property. Our goal is to create safety-conscious attitudes toward railways and to promote safe driving skills, attention and adherence to signs and warnings. This will result in fewer colli-

ways is being reduced. The volunteers and dedicated supporters in several organizations have made OL the best public safety program in Canada and it has made Canada a better and safer place to be. Operation Lifesaver began operating in Canada as a public education program, jointly funded by The Railway Association of Canada and Transport Canada in 1981.

34th Annual Wild Goose Chase Brian Nemethy And they are off…. The 34th running of the Wild Goose Chase Fun Run took place last Sunday from WL McLeod Elementary School. More than 330 participants took to the streets of Vanderhoof, either taking part in a 3.5km, 5km, or 8km event. The Senior Bowl camp and all-star game for Grade 12 players had already been held, while invites for junior football camps had already been delivered. Unlike previous years when the camp was held at the end of February, regional tryouts for the Senior Bowl and Team BC football programs weren’t held on the same weekend. Northern Sport Centre, as B.C. Football Conference coaches elected not to attend the sessions on the weekend of April 28 and 29. Regardless, the players who attended the camp enjoyed the opportunity to train before the spring season. For 17-year-old Vanderhoof running back Kyle Varley, the combine marked an opportunity to train shortly before junior football spring tryouts. While there weren’t as many coaches this year, Varley wasn’t complaining. “I like that they can bring out all these kinds of coaches. It’s good for technical work,” he said. “You get a lot of players who come from junior teams and they can really help you out with your

Northern Football
From page 13 “It’s cool to see what kind of guys the pro guys are, to kind of meet them and see kind of get their story on football and all of that kind of stuff,” said Varley, a graduating Grade 12 student at Nechako Valley Secondary. Not uncommon for a top Grade 12 football player, Varley has caught the attention of coaches from a variety of programs. He’s exploring options and listed four BCFC teams as possibilities this year: the Kamloops Broncos, Chilliwack Huskers, Langley Rams and Vancouver Island Raiders. Varley, who lists himself at 5-foot-7 and 175 pounds, attended the Broncos’ spring tryout in mid April and plans on participating in the Raiders’ camp this month. He also expects to enter the Langley spring tryout from June 1 to 3. “Main camps start pretty soon after that, so hopefully I’ll have my decision made after Langley’s camp and then I can decide where I want to go to main camp.” The timing and costs may have factored into lower participation in this year’s combine, as organizers reported about 70 players entered, a decline from the average of close to 100 in each of the first four years. Prince George Minor Football Association president Don Williams said players who had already paid for the spring tackle and flag seasons, which got underway this week, may have held off to
save money. Conflicts with other NSC user groups left the last weekend in February unavailable for the combine this year. While organizers started warming up to the idea of a camp right before the spring seasons and junior football tryouts, the lower registration total indicates the change didn’t go over as well as they’d hoped. “We’ll probably try to go back,” Williams said. “The reality was we couldn’t get the field time so we got to try to book it earlier.” SPRING SEASON While participation for the combine dropped off this year, that hasn’t been the case for the PGMFA spring tackle and flag seasons. Williams said this registration for the two leagues is the highest they’ve had, with about 40 players registered for flag and between 40 and 50 in tackle. The leagues began this week with practices, while the first set of games is slated for this weekend. Flag football contests are on Fridays, with 12-man tackle games on Saturdays. The games take place at the Ecole Lac Des Bois school fields in the Lakewood subdivision. Practices for the fall tackle season begin in July. Registration will take place during the free kick-off skills camp on July 21. More information on these programs is available through the PGMFA website at www.pgmfa.com.
