Mayor’s vision not realized

“We won’t give up” - Neinke Klaver, Save Our Hospital

Princeton Mayor Fred Thomas’ goal of a 24/7 emergency department never came to be before he passed away on May 4

When Princeton’s Mayor Fred Thomas died of prostate cancer early May 4, his goal of a 24/7 emergency department at Princeton Hospital hadn’t become a reality. Interior Health had sent out notices of hospital closures while Thomas was still mayor but he had already stepped down when it was announced the emergency department would close from midnight to 8 a.m. for at least a year. He believed the hospital’s declining service was a major reason why Princeton’s population dropped two per cent in the last four years. In search of better medical coverage, the influx of mine workers settled in neighbouring communities instead of Princeton, said Thomas in a previous Spotlight article. Warnings of limited physician availability in Princeton damaged the town, especially with a new mine opening, he said. “We lost out on the natural growth that should have occurred with the mine opening. Getting that growth back is going to be extremely difficult and time consuming,” he said. Thomas, who was 70 and mayor for four months, was dedicated to Princeton even when he had to give up his duties when he became too sick, said Area H director Brad Hope.

SPCA plans animal cruelty charge recommendation Michaela Garstin editor@similkameenspotlight.com

The SPCA is planning to recommend animal cruelty charges against the Princeton man who had five starving horses on his property. The severely malnourished horses were rescued from a ranch near Princeton in mid-February. The SPCA will recommended charges to Crown council, who will then decide whether to press charges.

Princeton

“I feel we have evidence to support a charge,” said Kathy Woodward, BC SPCA senior animal protection officer. It will take around a month for Crown council to decide whether to press animal cruelty charges, she said. But like other animal cruelty cases, it could take years before a ruling is made, she added. The SPCA interviewed witnesses and spoke with veterinarians as part of its investigation.

Otter Lake recedes Water levels have gone down but warm weather could bring another flood Michaela Garstin editor@similkameenspotlight.com

The water level of Otter Lake in Tulameen has dropped back to normal, down from six feet above normal the week before. But the situation could get worse if the weather warms up. “If it gets fairly warm then water will run back into the lake and this could raise it up,” said Dale Kronebusch, emergency services supervisor for the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen. The weather is supposed to rise to the low 20s by the weekend of May 12. Otter Lake’s water level depends on how much snow is melted in the nearby mountains, Kronebusch said. And the water could move in faster next time because the ground is already wet from the previous

flood, he added. Water surrounding Tulameen houses is noticeably lower. While many houses are damaged, only a few houses are still flooded, Kronebusch said. Vacation property owners came back on the weekend to see the extent of damage. “There are a couple homes in horrendous condition,” Kronebusch said. Eighty-one houses out of 174 were damaged by the flood. “Once we get through this heat spell, and we’re confident it won’t flood again, we’ll take off the evacuation alert,” Kronebusch said. Otter Lake rose more than three feet in two days, causing an evacuation alert to be issued on April 26. Tulameen residents were given cleaning kits by the Red Cross. The kits include cleaning supplies, buckets and information on what must be thrown away.

MOCK ACCIDENT

- Princeton Secondary Grade 10 students watched a dramatization of a car accident on May 2 to learn about the dangers drinking and driving.

Tough lessons about drinking behind the wheel Michaela Garstin editor@similkameenspotlight.com

Princeton Secondary School students watched a dramatization of a car accident where two people pretended to be badly hurt after being struck by a drunk driver. The Grade 10 field trip on May 2 taught the students hard lessons about the affects of drinking and driving. Paramedics, Highway Extrication and the RCMP attended the realistic-looking scene, giving a playby-play of what they would do in the scenario. “We’re showing what happens when people make poor choices by drinking and driving,” said Princeton paramedic Aaron Mahoney. He told the students that a drunk driver’s life changes forever when they hurt someone. “It doesn’t just affect one person. It affects every-

one involved,” he said. A police officer said the RCMP would be at the accident scene prepared to take a breath sample in order to lay charges. If the driver is injured, they can ask for a warrant for blood samples from the hospital. The students learned it’s not only alcohol that causes accidents. The car used for the dramatization was in bad shape after a real accident where the driver was speeding and rolled the car. The students also toured Princeton Hospital’s morgue, where they learned what happens to people who are killed by drunk drivers before the funeral. PSS principal Sandy Blair warned the students they need to pay attention when getting into a car because it can be difficult to tell if someone is too drunk to drive. “A lot of people get hurt by drunk drivers. It’s unusual to not know someone who has,” she said.

Farewell Fred Michaela Garstin editor@similkameenspotlight.com

I only knew Mayor Fred Thomas for a couple months before he passed away, but I quickly realized he was going to make positive changes to Princeton. He wanted progress in town and was willing to fight for it. He ran for mayor on his support for a 24/7 emergency department, but extended scheduled closures came into affect while he was sick. I know he would have fought for restored ER coverage and I hope the new mayor - whoever it is - does the same. Fred was always available to take my phone calls, even on Sunday evenings before the paper went out. He was very passionate about helping Princeton, and had concrete plans to do so. He wasn’t afraid to make changes - as long as they were positive. I could tell Fred had a business background before he told me he worked for IBM and other big corporations for more than 40 years. He always got to the point, and didn’t sugar-coat his thoughts. Everything he said was straight to the point. This was a welcome change from many politicians who can say a lot, but don’t have a lot to actually say. I wish Fred could have been mayor longer. I think, overall, Princeton would have been a much better place.

Strangely, this U.S. banned from B.C.’s north coast. He said it is “fragmented,” crude traffic excites no protests. Where do urban protesters think we get the gasoline and methanol out, a practice that was never questioned, it started bringing tankers into the Kitimat port loaded with a liquid diesel fuel sold at B.C. filling stations? Do they think it’s all natural gas by-product called condensate. From there it is made at the little Chevron refinery in Burnaby, the last remsent by rail to Alberta to dilute oil sands crude. This process nant of refining capacity in southern B.C.? We could use a serious debate about how B.C. handles led to Enbridge’s proposed double pipeline that would send petroleum. Instead, we see factually inaccurate claims procondensate east and diluted crude west. The Dogwood Initiative, one of the multiple U.S.-funded moted by U.S. interests to attack Canadian crude only. Our opposition politicians and media mostly just go along groups that now dominate B.C.’s environmental lobby, rose to protest these early condensate shipments, saying they for the ride.

Prineton Hospital - then and now Dear Citizens of Princeton Good Day Folks! You may have noticed in the last issues of both our local papers in town that Save Our Similkameen donated funds to the Save Our Hospital Coalition. Why would we do this? After all, isn’t SOS an environmental organization? Of all the work the SOS does, we can not forget why we do advocacy. It’s simple, and selfish really - We advocate for people who choose to live rurally. So our kids have a healthy environment to grow up in. So future generations have a choice. Let us make no mistake and be clear that underneath the heated debates over health care in rural B.C., rural residents right to choose where we live is being unfairly dictated by the withdrawal of medical services.

If you are a senior citizen with any kind of medical condition you know what I’m talking about. I f you are an expectant mother, live with a chronic condition, if you have ever had an accident that required emergency medical services or require a doctors attention, you know that it is almost impossible to live where you cannot access fundamental and vital medical services. As most of you may have heard, the emergency hours of our hospital have been cut back. In 2000 we heard phrases like over-utilization, cross-coverage and creative solutions. What PGH had then What PGH has now: - 20 beds - Proposed cuts: 8 beds - Beds cut: 14

- Actual remaining as of 2012: 6 beds

Community hospital forum opens Lisa Carleton lisa@similkameenspotlight.com

The Save Our Hospital Coalition opened their office at 259 Vermilion Ave. on May 3. This forum will serve as a public awareness program offering the opportunity to network, research and assist with letter writing - all in effort to bring the community together to achieve the goal of saving Princeton General Hospital. Any person, organization or group is welcomed to come and share their concerns from noon to 6 p.m. Monday to Saturday. Find out more by visiting www.savepgh.ca Save Our Similkameen (SOS) is the organization hosting this forum. SOS is typically an environmental group however, as SOS president Solana Allison explained, “SOS advocates for families to have a safe place to be and grow.” The situation with the hospital requires immediate attention, she said. Allison adds, “choices of future generations are slowly being taken away and we (SOS) believe that everyone has the right to choose and express their concerns to the Interior Health Authority” Members of the Save Our Hospital Coalition group all agree the situation with Princeton General Hospital is a “matter of life and death situation for residents and the town itself.” They believe a town with out a hospital will not keep, nor attract people, and will damage the town economically.

“If the hospital does not serve the needs of the people, it is not a hospital,” said Princeton resident Ed Staples. The group is “here to stay, and we mean business,” adds Save Our Hospital member Nienke Klaver. A group of like minded people throughout the community of Princeton and Area H have come together to form a coalition known as Save Our Hospital. Heading up this group are: president Spencer Coyne, vice-president Ed Staples, secretary Nienke Klaver and treasurer Dawn Gardner.. The group began their effort by circulating a petition throughout the community, stating, “As residents of Princeton and Area, we the undersigned are very concerned about the recent closures of our emergency facilities at the Princeton Hospital. “Princeton is a rural, resource based community, with a major highway going through town. We ask that you honour your commitment to ‘provide quality, appropriate and timely health services to British Columbians’ and bring back a fully functioning hospital with a 24/7 emergency room.” The Save Our Hospital Coalition group is grateful to Kim Maynard for donating the space to run the office, China Creek Internet Services, Coopers Foods, Home Hardware, Princeton Builders Mart (Irly Bird), Outback Jacks, Bob Hart’s Furnace Repair, Auto Tac Graphics, Princeton Hospital Auxiliary, Crisis Assistance Society and numerous community members for all of their support.

Rotary penny drive Finding ways to raise funding to complete projects can be a little tough at times, but Princeton Rotary president Judy Short has come up with a way for one project in particular. Given the news that the Canadian Mint just minted the very last Canadian penny and the fact that pennies will fade out of our currency, a “Rotary Penny Drive” seemed like just the right idea. Last week Rotary Penny Drive containers were placed in Coopers Foods, Billy’s Family Restaurant and at Quick Pick Grocery. At any one of these business your pennies can be dropped off to help Princeton Rotary finish the kitchen upgrade at the Riverside Centre. Princeton Rotary is gearing up a well for an active month in June. The annual Princeton Rotary Charity Golf Tournament is set to take place on June 9. There will be lots of prizes and a barbecue in the afternoon. Entry fee per player is $100. Contact Ken Blower at 295-6629 or Randy McLean at 295-6702 to register. On June 30, the Princeton Rotary Parade will be held in the downtown core and immediately after, the annual Taste of Ales and Chili Cook-off takes place at Veterans Square with local rising stars, Jump the Planet who will provide the evenings entertainment. Residents can now keep up on Princeton Rotary Club events and activities on facebook - http://www. facebook.com/groups/304458196262839 STORES FLYERS DEALS COUPONS BROCHURES CATALOGUES CONTESTS PRODUCTS STORES FLYERS DEALS COUPONS BROCHURES CATALOGUES CONTESTS PR S BR S ST S CA S DE S BR S ST S CA S

WANT TO RECYCLE YOUR UNWANTED ELECTRONICS IN PRINCETON? Come to the Return-It™ Drop-Off Event:

PRINCETON & DISTRICT ARENA 167 Old Hedley Road Date Saturday, May 12, 2012 Time 10 am – 3 pm

WHAT IS THE ELECTRONICS PRODUCTS RECYCLING ASSOCIATION (EPRA) PROGRAM AND WHAT DOES IT DO? EPRA is a national not-for-profit extended producer responsibility program that was previously run by ESABC. EPRA has contracted Encorp Pacific to deliver their stewardship program under the Return-It™ Electronics brand in British Columbia. Regulated electronics are managed and recycled in a socially and environmentally responsible manner. The program also prevents regulated electronics from ending up in landfills or being illegally shipped to developing countries.

WHAT ARE THE ACCEPTABLE ELECTRONIC ITEMS INCLUDED IN THE PROGRAM? The following items can be recycled free of charge: display devices, desktop computers, portable computers, computer peripherals, computer scanners, printers and fax machines, non-cellular phones and answering machines, vehicle audio and video systems (aftermarket), home audio and video systems, and personal or portable audio and video systems. For a full list of acceptable items visit return-it.ca/electronics/products Get ready. New products are being added to the Electronics Recycling Program on July 1st, 2012.

Woodward said she has seen offenders spend time in jail or face substantial fines for animal cruelty cases. The five horses are recovering at the BC Interior Horse Rescue Society in Kelowna after being surrendered by their owner, who reportedly said he could not afford to feed them. By the time the rescue society heard about Peaches - the most underweight horse she only weighed 500 pounds, less than half the weight she should. The other horses were also underweight, but not as bad. They are showing improvement every day, said BC Interior Horse Rescue president Joey Tompkins on the society’s Facebook page. “Hope is filling in very nice and is getting free feed of hay as well as supplements,” she said about one for the horses rescued from Princeton.

“She is starting to trust more and is enjoying the attention as well” Joey Tompkins Horse Rescue

Torrie - the horse most untrusting of people - is allowing Tompkins to come up and groom her. “She is starting to trust more and is enjoying the attention as well,” Tompkins said. Jessie and Babe are making progress and could be available for adoption soon. And Peaches - the horse once in the worse condition - is slowly putting on weight.

HOW TO PLAY: Fill in the grid so that every row, every column, and every 3x3 box contains the numbers 1 through 9 only once. Each 3x3 box is outlined with a darker line. You already have a few numbers to get you started. Remember: You must not repeat the numbers 1 through 9 in the same line, column, or 3x3 box.

ARIES: Ignorance is not bliss, Aries. Do your homework before you approach anyone with your idea. The more informed you are, the more support you will gather. TAURUS: Jackpot, Taurus. You suspected something was up, and you were right. Step lightly, or risk making a spectacle of yourself. A memo makes an objective clear. GEMINI: Big changes are in store. Receive them with open arms, Gemini, and you will come out on top. An artistic work leads to introspection which leads to fulfillment. CANCER: You’re on top all week long, Cancer. You tackle every challenge, big and small, with great ease. Someone in your inner circle has something to tell you. LEO: The journey is nearly over. Take stock of the situation and put what you’ve learned along the way to good use. A request is denied. No need to worry, Leo. VIRGO: News from afar puts a new spin on a situation at home. Reassess the matter, Virgo, and devise a different plan of attack. A financial problem is resolved. LIBRA: Conflict among family members continues. Steer clear of it, Libra. You have an affair of the heart to attend to. A bonus at work comes in handy. SCORPIO: You’re a fixer, Scorpio. Whatever’s broken—a window, a heart—you like to make it better. Be careful that your need to fix doesn’t supersede your need to listen. SAGITTARIUS: Creativity soars this week, Sagittarius, and you get more done that you have all month. Celebrate with a little get-together of your closest friends. FOR ENTERTAINMENT ONLY

1947 - 2012 Eileen was born in Oliver BC in 1947. As a child, she moved with her family to Princeton where she and her dog Bowser spent hours roaming the hills in what she describes as an idyllic childhood. After graduating from high school, she trained at Royal Columbia Hospital and became a Registered Nurse. During this period, she made strong friendships with her fellow students—bonds that exist to this day. She met and married Nick Postma and together they raised three beautiful children. In later years, she met and married John Pagdin, her self proclaimed soul mate. She died peacefully on May 2, 2012, at the age 64, after a long battle with cancer. She redefined the term “courage”, and was surrounded with love at her death. She is survived by her mother Irene Wales, brothers; David and Jerry, husband John, and her children; Ross, Lora and Kristy, their spouses, and five grandchildren. A Celebration of Life will be held at the chapel of Bowers Funeral Home, Salmon Arm. Saturday May 12, at 10:00 am. Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the War Amps of Canada.

DERKER, ROBERT (BOB) RICHARD August 24, 1935 - April 26, 2012 It is with great sadness that we aannounce the passing of our loving husband, brother, father and grandfather Robert (Bob), at home on April 26, 2012. B Bob is predeceased by his mother Hi Hilda, father John and sister Babs. Bob is survived by his loving wife Pearl, brother Bud (Sandy), daughter Laura (Bob) Charron, sons; Darrell (Shelley), Kelly (Li-an) and by his grandchildren; Andréa, Richard, Breanna, Braden and Kathryn as well as many relatives and friends. Bob was born in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan on August 24, 1935. The family relocated to Kelowna where he attended school prior to joining the air force. During this time he met and married Pearl. After resigning from the air force, they relocated to Beaverdale where he started his career in mining. Another position was available and he worked in Revelstoke before finally moving to Princeton where he worked as a supervisor until retirement. Bob was a long standing Legion member attending parades and events. He was an avid sports fan, both playing and watching. He especially enjoyed curling, golf and fishing as well as many other outdoor activities. He served as a board member of the Princeton Golf Course, Timberline Cruisers Snowmobile Club and was always willing to lend a hand when needed. After retiring he took up woodworking crafts, Intarsia being his favourite which won him many ribbons at the Fall Fair. A celebration of Bob’s life will be held at a family gathering to be determined at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
