New partnership could bridge gaps for victims of violence BREANNE MASSEY West Kootenay Advertiser
Battered women may have been forced to pay the price during a brief hiatus when victim services in Greater Trail did not exist, but a local partnership could change that. The Trail Family and Individual Resource Centre Society (FAIR) and the Skills Centre have partnered under the new Work-
BC Employment Services contract to create a program to bridge services for women who have been victimized. The new program will aid women in the community who have probably been working with either the WINS Transition House or Second Stage Housing programs who feel ready to work through the hurdles of gaining employment. “We are targeting the program
to 10 individuals in the first year,” said Carol Corbett, employment and human resources services coordinator at the Skills Centre. “For those participants who feel ready, there will be a work experience component at the end. We anticipate the entire program will take six to eight months to complete on a part-time basis.” According to Corbett, similar bridg-
ing programs exist for women throughout the province, but despite “two previous cohorts” in Trail, it has been years since previous programs were being used. She said previous programs were only used as “one-time contracts” that were full-time with an “intensive” model. “The project that we will deliver is somewhat modified from original programs
which were operated on more of a full time basis,” said Corbett. “We have not officially started yet as we are in the process of working with FAIR to identify the participants. But, we anticipate the women will leave the program with improved employability skills, possibly certificate training as required and work experience. And when the program is
completed, they will be able to receive ongoing employment related supports.” She stressed that it’s an employment program, not a women’s resource centre. The staff will teach participants a series of “how to...” skills, as well as personal planning, goal setting, building self-esteem and overcoming abuse tactics. It will deliver employment related
components such as career assessments, job search skills and resume writing. Finally, women in Greater Trail will have a bridging employment program that offers women a safe place to enhance their personal life and reassess their employability skills. Program coordinators are optimistic about launching the program this June.

2011 Sculptures were gathered up for dispersal to their new homes earlier this spring. Jim Sinclair photos
Art lovers (and those who just love beautiful, thoughtprovoking things) are in for a rush with this year’s SculptureWalk. The 30 contributors to what is rapidly becoming one of Castlegar’s signature cultural events have been chosen, but it is not quite time to divulge their identities. Early disclosure of what lies ahead would take some of the impact from the gala kick-off event set for May 26 at the Kootenay Gallery. At that time, those with an appreciation for the tangible, substantial offerings like the ‘walk promotes will be like kids in a candy shop. In the meantime the anticipation seems to be growing exponentially. “We’re just hitting the ground running in a big way,” said Castlegar SculptureWalk’s Executive Director Joy Barrett on May 7... “working out all the sculpture locations, what new pedestals we need,
what new locations we’ll have... just the plan of where everything’s going to go. It’s like... moving one piece and everything else moves. It’s a bit of a project.” Most familiar locations will be once again occupied, however, there will probably be a new location near the library, as Barrett explained. “We’ve got one piece called ‘Open Book’ by an artist named Paul Reimer,” related Barrett. Oops, there’s one out of the bag! But seriously, the artwork is in the shape of an open book but doubles as a bench which can be enjoyed in the obvious way. “And we’ll probably have a new pedestal across from the SculptureWalk office, outside Ely’s dress shop. We’re still kind of working on some of the other ones.” With 30 sculptures (up from 26 last year) the program is clearly headed in the right direction. Watch for updates as they become available. The Rossland skate park is now in the design phase of the project and will likely have a public meeting later this month to show off 3D models of the planned design. Back in November the Rossland Skatepark Society held a meeting in which they gathered information on what sort of features skateboarders in Rossland would like, as well as concerns neighbours might have. The park now has a designer, Spectrum Skateparks. The company is Canada’s only firm specializing exclusively in design and construction of eco-friendly municipal skate parks. Robin Strachan, a director for the society, said that the designer was found through a request for proposal process. “So Jim Barnum for
Workers were out Monday assessing the geotechnical aspects on the site of the future Rossland skatepark. Arne Petryshen photo
Spectrum Skateparks will be our designer,” Strachan said. “We had him out a couple of weeks ago and did our initial site visit with him.” Strachan said they hope to break ground by next spring and have the park ready to go by summer 2013. As for what the park will look like, Strachan said they got a lot of feedback for a
flowing style park. “It really fits in with the sort of mountain culture and the mountain biking scene of this area,” he said, adding that it will complement the other skateparks and planned parks in other nearby cities like Castlegar and Nelson. “We want to try to be something that’s a little bit different.”

What’s New with What’s Old? Trail radio postcard fetches $104.50 WEst Kootenay Advertiser
Another in a series about local items selling on eBay. A vintage QSL card from Trail radio station CJAT sold last month for $104.50 US. The front showed photos of the station’s studio and transmitter, while the back, postmarked February 12, 1936 was addressed to F.E. Simpson of Montclair, New Jersey. It read: “Dear Frankey, Sorry cannot verify your report of Jan. 24th. On every night to 2 a.m. EST. Try again.” Radio stations issued QSL cards to listeners, usually in far flung locations, to confirm — or in this case deny — they had received the signal. An identical card mailed two days before the one above, sold in April 2006 for $51. It was sent to Arthur L. Robb of Topeka, Kansas, confirming he had in fact heard the station. By 1936, CJAT, formerly community station 10AT, was a commercial venture that offered a mix of network and homegrown programming. That fall, it fed a live dramatic series to the Dominion Network, The Ghost Walker, produced
Station CJAT was well-endowed with up-todate equipment back in 1936. Submitted photo
and directed by Mercer McLeod, who later worked on the London stage. Today the station is known as EZ Rock. • A nice bird’s-eyeview postcard of the Boundary ghost town of Phoenix yielded $34 US, despite some surface damage. Published by McRae Bros. Ltd. of Greenwood and Phoenix, it was mailed from Grand Forks to Mrs. E.C.W. MacColl of
Port Moody in 1909. The message read: “Dear Folks, Am staying here overnight ... Saw the church and manse. It’s a peach. Next week I’m going out the Crow’s Nest and there will go up to Arrowhead and Revelstoke after I go to Spokane then to Port Moody. With love, your son Evan.” Scottish-Canadian poet Evan MacColl, who died in 1898, was known as “the Gaelic
Bard of Canada.” Was the postcard writer a descendent? • An unused postcard from the Bank of British North America’s Kaslo branch, dating from between 1900 and 1909 sold for $16 Cdn. The bank had its head office in London, and six branch offices in BC: Kaslo, Rossland, Greenwood, Ashcroft, Vancouver, and Victoria. It merged with the Bank of Montreal in 1918. A few former branch buildings survive in Dawson City, Winnipeg, and Toronto. • An 1896 stock certificate from the May Flower Gold Mining Co. sold for $46 US. This company operated the May Flower mine, also known as the Olla Pordrida (after a Spanish stew), south of Rossland. The company was incorporated that same year with a head office at Spokane. Its president, George F. Crane, was a New York banker and capitalist. The claim, now part of the Maid of Erin group, has been drilled and poked at as recently as 1995. The stock’s seller was in Fernley, Nevada. For a photo gallery of the above items, see nelsonstar.com.

Forty two 4-H members from five clubs met at the Rock Creek Fairgrounds on Saturday May 5 for the annual judging Rally Day. Twelve educational displays were on display in the front lobby. The 4-H members met outside to get instructions and meet the other clubs. The clubs posed by their banners for a great district photo before a quick game of 4-H trivia. Classes were judged then everyone enjoyed a scrumptious pot luck lunch. The demonstrations followed with local 4-H Ambassador Tim DuMont telling of his job representing 4-H around the province. Tim is a past member of the Boundary C Beef Club. Brianna Elliot told of her trip to Youth Action last summer. Brittany Fillmore talked on provincial club week where she won a trip to Alberta in July to attend a conference on “People helping People Plus.” Alanna Baiton also won a trip to Ottawa to the citizenship conference April 2013. The five clubs represented : Borderline 4-H Club (BL)from Rock Creek/Kelowna, Boundary C 4-H Club (BC)from Rock Creek area , Boundary Multi Club (BMC) Grand Forks area, Kootenay Cinch “N” Saddle (KCNS), Castlegar, Trail, Rossland area, and Nelson 4-H Club (NC)from Nelson Area . District Vice President Greg MacDonald announced the winners as follows: This is the first year we had Cloverbuds at the Rally Day. Clo-

Financial
Income Plus – GLWB Products – both are soon to be Kyboshed SUBMITTED
1.877.364.2333 LOCAL 250.364.2333
If we rewind the tape over the last decade, it is easy to recognize that as investors, we’ve had our fair share of stock market volatility. It’s also easy to recognize that many of our retirees have a need for guaranteed income with sufficient growth, to ensure that they have enough to last throughout their lifetime. Most Canadians will have their Old Age Security and CPP benefits to count on. Some of our locals have also had the privilege of working for companies such as Zellstoff-Celgar, Te c k - C o m i n c o , School Districts, and Interior Health etc. where they have the benefit of a pension plan at retirement. Unfortunately, there are many more who are self-employed or working for a company that does not offer such plans and they are forced to save for retirement on their own. Back in 2006, a well-known insurance company introduced a phenomenal “pension-like investment product known as “income plus which guaranteed a payment over a minimum 20-year
period. Not long after, many of the other top insurance companies followed suit and added more bells and whistles to ensure investors had a “guaranteed income for life. These plans were issued only by insurance companies, because they contained guarantees which reached beyond traditional investments. While these plans aren’t for everyone, we have used them to fill a need for people who don’t have a pension plan from an employer. Their primary benefit is the production of an income which can be guaranteed for the life of the contract holder. This financial product is most commonly known as a Guaranteed Lifetime Withdrawal Benefit Plan or GLWB. These plans have been offered by insurance companies who promise to pay a guaranteed income for life, regardless of how the actual stock market is performing. Some of the plans promised to “lockin gains every three years so that if your original investment grew then the new higher value would be used to define your income amount. Most plans offered bonus rates on the
income amount. As an example, if your income amount was $5,000 per year initially (but you delayed taking that amount for six years) then you would get a five per cent increase on that income amount each and every year you didn’t touch it.
It seems like the words “secure, “comfortable, and “guaranteed appear to be vanishing from our vocabulary altogether. Wow – too good to be true. Finally, there was an investment where you could really have your cake and eat it too! Okay, so brace yourself for some bad news – Yep, fast forward to today and all of this is going by the wayside. We’ve been getting daily email notifications from all of the top insurance companies who are now “suspending further sales or making radical changes on these GLWB products. If you’ve already set up a GLWB plan then these changes will not affect your existing contract.
There may be limitations or outright restrictions on adding any more money, so it’s best that you contact your advisor to see how your particular plan will impact you. If these humongous insurance companies are starting to rein it in, it makes us wonder how all of the other company pension plans are going to deal with things going forward. According to Aon Hewitt, the global human resource consulting and outsourcing business of Aon Corporation, the percentage to which all of the pensions in Canada are “funded dropped last year to 67 per cent - falling four per cent in 2011 alone, and it’s been steadily dropping since 2008. This means these company pension plans - on average - have about two-thirds of the money they should, in order to pay the promised pensions. Hmmm, so what does THAT mean? Chances are, it will require much higher contributions from employers and employees – perhaps double – and there is also the likelihood there could be reductions in benefits. Things like retiree medical coverage
and inflation protection will no doubt be the first to go... if your pension even offers those now. What once was a certainty of having a guaranteed lifetime company pension income; it seems that this too, is going by the wayside. More and more employers are dropping the liability of offering those expensive Defined Benefit Plans which pay you a percentage of your income per year of service. In turn, more companies are in favour of the looser Defined Contribution Plans, which simply hands you a pot of money when you retire and wishes you good luck! Lots of changes are happening in our world, folks‌ and it seems like the words “secure, comfortable and guaranteedâ€? appear to be vanishing from our vocabulary altogether. DRINKING WATER WEEK
www.yrwater.ca
Here in BC we often take our tap water for granted, but it is a ďŹ nite resource that we should value and protect.
MAY 13-19
We need to value our drinking water methods in your area. We invite you to get involved and learn more about your water. Start by taking the Community Water Challenge and pledge to be water wise. By incorporating practical actions into our daily routines, we can make a difference. Visit www.drinkingwaterweek.org to find out about Drinking Water Week events in your area, and to download activities and educational resources provided by BC Water & Waste Association.
Are you water wise? Take the Community Water Challenge and enter to win an exciting water-themed getaway courtesy of the Fairmont Waterfront Hotel and Helijet! It’s simple – just pledge to take one of the water wise actions below. Make your pledge at:
drinkingwaterweek.org/challenge Be Water Wise: N Limit your shower time to 5 minutes per day. N Install a low-flow fixture or appliance. Look for the WaterSense label on retail shelves across BC. N Return unused or expired medications to the pharmacy for proper disposal. N Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth, shaving and doing dishes. N Dispose of household wastes such as cleaners, paints and grease responsibly, instead of putting them down your sink or toilet.
True and False: Test your water knowledge – take the quiz!
Did You Know?
1. British Columbians use more water than other Canadians.
T__ F__
2. Fats, oils and grease may be properly disposed of down drains or toilets.
T__ F__
3. The best way to achieve a healthy lawn is by watering lightly several times a week.
T__ F__
ANSWERS: 1.True: British Columbians use an average of 426 litres of water per day; the average Canadian uses 329 litres of water per day (nearly double what Europeans use!)* 2. A taste of something new and something old highlights the 48th annual Silver City Days, which began Tuesday in Trail. More food vendors on the midway and the return of the popular Sidewalk Café are sure to whet the appetite of fairgoers. “As long as I’ve been around, the
Sidewalk Café has been the highlight of the event,” said Tom Gawryletz, president of the Trail Smoke Eaters, hosts of the event. Gawryletz said it was a great opportunity to bring a festival favourite back to life. “We’re not just a hockey club, we’re a part of the community.” The café, inside the Cominco Arena on
Saturday, will feature a big spaghetti feast as well as pizza and Italian sausages backed by a day-long lineup of entertainment. Today the celebrations truly commence. Along with the fun and food on the midway, a dance for senior citizens will be held between 3:30 and 8 p.m. at the Cominco Gym. An engaging performance from local leg-
ends North of 60 sets the mood for locals to enjoy a cold beer, glass of wine or an assortment of snacks. Friday, fair fun continues with the bocce tournament at the Trail Curling Rink beginning at noon. The night will be elegantly capped off by the Trail Ambassador Candidate Debut at the Charles Bailey Theatre. Saturday’s jammed-
packed day begins with the Trail Firefighter’s Silver City Day Parade at 11 a.m. The parade route remains the same as in years gone by – beginning by the old bridge, crossing the Victoria St. Bridge and finishing near the aquatic centre. Right at the conclusion of the parade, the Sidewalk Café starts dishing out its tasty treats.
our biggest event
ends soon
Along with food, the arena will resonate with the sounds of musical entertainment from Austin Rafuse, Katie Louglin, Mariah Morris, Eric Bulanoff and Jason Thomas. There will also be three dance performances and many other great groups. KidSport Community Fest will host a food court with live music and a kid zone by Ferraro Foods from noon to 5 p.m. Locals who like to shake things up with dancing will be thrilled about the choices this year—there will be two events available including ballroom dancing or a reunion dance. The SwingSations will play music at the KP Hall ballroom dance between 8 p.m. and midnight and North of 60 will appear at the reunion dance following the
Sidewalk Café at the Cominco Arena between 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. No Silver City Days Saturday would be complete without fireworks. Expect the sky to light up around dusk near the boat launch. The hectic weekend wraps up on Sunday. Morning people can attend the Silver City Days Fun Run at 9 a.m, at Gyro Park. If you like to sleep in—turn up around noon for more fun on the midway until 6 p.m. Swimmers can take advantage of the free drop-in use of the Trail Aquatic Centre between noon and 3 p.m. or listen to the Trail Maple Leaf Band in Gyro Park at noon. Everybody is welcome to finish up the celebration by attending the Family Fun Day in Gyro Park until 5 p.m.

Trail Brief A local municipal disagreement on the shared cost of sewer services has spilled over into the provincial arena after one city council flushed away recent proposal recommendations. After Rossland city council dismissed an eleventh-hour proposal from Trail city council in early April in an attempt to avoid arbitration, the Silver City council was quick to reply. On Monday night during their regular meeting Trail council voted to formally support final proposal arbitration under the “Community Charter” — as suggested by the Ministry of Community, Sport and Cultural Development (CSCD) — and asked the matter be dealt with by the province prior to the end of 2012.
“I really, sincerely believe we have to push this process along and take it to the point of arbitration and get it done with,” said councilor Kevin Jolly. “We’ve done everything we possibly can to reach an agreement.” He further suggested, given the loss to the taxpayers of Trail, they should be looking at recovering some of the money the city has paid in extra costs. For four years the question of who pays what portion of the cost of sewer service among Trail, Rossland and Warfield has been booted around like a political football. Trail is currently paying close to 70 per cent of the regional budget following a formula created in the late 1960s, based mostly on population and projected growth.

Housing prices up $12k in Q1 NELSON STAFF West Kootenay Advertiser
The average residential house price in the Kootenays rose $12,000 in the first quarter of 2012 from the same period last year. The number of sales has also increased, according to figures compiled by the Kootenay Real Estate Board. The average price for a detached home was $279,000. Within Nelson city limits, the jump was even more pronounced, with homes selling for an average of $370,000, compared to $317,000 in 2011 — highest in West Kootenay. Rural Nelson homes, however, saw a drop — $324,000 versus $450,000 in

the first three months of last year. In Kaslo, the average detached home sold for $300,000 this year and $275,000 last year, and in Salmo $215,000 this year against $122,500 last year. So far this year, 769 detached homes have been put on the market through the multiple listing service, and of that number 200 have sold. Meanwhile, the gross dollar volume across all categories of homes is $96.9 million to date. Last year saw the fewest house sales in the Kootenays since 1993, at 1,145, and the fewest across all categories at 2,112. The total dollar value of the sales was $537 million, the lowest since 2003.
The local lodge of Elks of Canada will celebrate its 100th anniversary at the Slavonic Hall in Grand Forks on May 12 at noon. As well as acknowledging 100 years of community service, the Elks will have a Mother’s Day pancake breakfast on May 13 from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m., again at the Slavonic Hall.
Shawna Schuh, Com. Director for GF Elks Submitted photo
A fraternal organization, Elks focuses on fundraising for children, especially for assisting children with speech and hear-
ing impairments. “There are three Elks’ camps across British Columbia that have kids coming from across British Columbia to enjoy summer events,” explained Shawna Schuh, communications director for Grand Forks Elks. “(In Grand Forks), our main focus is our pancake breakfasts. So Mother’s Day, Canada Day and the Grand Forks Fall Fair, along with other spo-
radic events throughout the year depending on the venue.” Proceeds from the pancake breakfasts go to the Royal Purple Fund for Children, which is spread across Canada and has raised over $8 million to date. “We’ve given soccer balls with the Elks emblem to the Boundary Youth Soccer Association,” said Schuh. “We’ve also purchased and donated
baseball uniforms with Elks emblem for the Boundary Babe Ruth Baseball team.” The Grand Forks Elks have also given donations to Grand Forks Girl Guides, Hardy View Lodge, Boundary Hospital, and Boundary Lodge. Founded in 1912, the first lodge (group) was established in Vancouver, B.C. and has since grown to more than 250 lodges and 15,000 members.
Improvements are ready to begin in Rossland ARNE PETRYSHEN West Kootenay Advertiser
The City of Rossland has awarded the contract for the Columbia renewal project to Copcan Contracting Ltd. Copcan workers are already at work in
downtown Rossland marking and surveying roadways and sidewalks. In Monday night’s meeting, council discussed the details of the award and the finer points of the projects. Copcan’s original
bid, at $6 million, was higher than the cost that ISL originally came up with for the project. The West Kootenay Friends of Refugees (WKFoR) recently hosted an intimate evening fundraising event at a home in
Rossland. The fundraiser is to help facilitate the bringing over of two families of Burmese refugees to Rossland. The Valhalla ArtsTrio with cellist, Johanne Perron, clarinetist Nicola Everton, pianist Suzanne
Ruberg-Gordon and twelve year-old Isabella D’âloize Perron, delighted audiences with its mix of classical and contemporary chamber music. The event was a success raising over $1,900 for the WKFoR.

Twelve players from throughout the Kootenays have been chosen to represent the region at the B.C. Summer Games in girls basketball. Head coach Kim Matson and her assistants made the selections after the final selection camp, which took place May 5 in Cranbrook at Parkland School. The first selection camp went on April 21 at Stanley Humphries Secondary in Castlegar where 25 girls and were pared down to 14 for the final camp.
“The practices have gone really well and I’ve learned a lot. I’m excited for the summer games.” -Naomi Perkins “I’ve been very impressed with the talent that’s come out,” said Matson. “It’s been great to have players from throughout the East and West Kootenays. We’ve got play-

ers from Greenwood to Sparwood.” For Ansleigh Dergousoff and Naomi Perkins from Nelson, the experience has been good so far. “The practices have been going really well and I’ve learned a lot. I’m excited for the summer games,” said Perkins. A strong rebounder and good defender, she is expected to play the forward position although she can also slide down to the guard spot.
“We’ve been working on a lot of different things,” said Dergousoff. “It’s more challenging than playing on the school team.” Despite being almost 5’9,” Dergousoff is expected to play guard and utilize her quickness and athleticism. “I’m learning a lot more technical stuff,” said Perkins. “It’s a lot harder basketball.” The B.C. Summer Games take place July
19-22 in Surrey. Before that, the Kootenay team will have a couple of team camps, one in Castlegar and one in Spokane. They will also head down o the B.C. Zone Provincial Tournament in Langley on May 25-27. At that tournament the team will have a chance to play games against other summer games teams as well as be evaluated by provincial team coaches.

Danny is 18 months old. He laughs, cries, smiles and enjoys silly games like peek-aboo with his parents. He has always been a very quiet baby but sometimes he makes babbling sounds like “bababa” and “mamama.” He has not said any words yet and his mom wonders if this is normal. Her neighbour tells her “don’t worry, he’ll talk when he’s ready,” but mom is still worried. When it comes to speech and language development, what should parents expect to see, and when? An 18 month old
like Danny should be able to say at least 18 words and he should understand more words than he can speak. He should also be able to point to show you something. For example, he should be able to understand and point when asked, “Where’s your belly button?” Danny’s parents should consider taking him to a speech language pathologist who can help identify and treat children with speech and language delays. A good rule of thumb for parents or caregivers... Continued on P. 22

ffor th the
Week
May M a 11, 2012
Tip of the Week: Venus turns retrograde this week (May 15 - June 27). Generally, when Venus is retrograde it is considered best not to make big purchases. At least, it may simply be best to choose a very auspicious date and time if you do feel moved and inspired to invest. Knowing when is the best time is an ancient technique and is called “Electional Astrology”. Making bad choices is common and it is partially due to excess will at the expense of considering larger rhythms and cycles of time. Many contracts, leases, business start-ups, marriages, loans and other such activities that imply long-term investments and usually larger layouts go awry every day. At least a significant portion of those probably would not if people stopped assuming that their will is stronger than the natural and rhythmic timing. It is due to this erroneous notion that we are superior to and must conquer nature. Now look at our world. Sure, science and technology have produced ‘flowers’ but they have also bought are leading us to destruction and despair due to wrong thinking that has produced unsustainable attitudes and actions. Venus retrograde offers us an opportunity to reconsider our values and priorities and to think carefully before we reactively engage backed by shortterm and excessively willful attitudes

LIBRA (SEP 22 – OCT 22)
TAURUS (APR 20 – MAY 21)
SCORPIO (OCT 22 – NOV 21)
GEMINI (MAY 21 – JUN 21)
SAGITTARIUS (NOV 21 – DEC 21)
CANCER (JUN 21 – JUL 22)
CAPRICORN (DEC 21 – JAN 19)
This is an expansive, varied and yet stable time. This trend will continue for a few weeks. Your energy levels will rise steadily as well. But for now it is slow and sure that will work best. June will prove much more industrious yet, so pace your self. Accept and commit to the responsibilities steadily emerging in your life to lay claim to your power. The gates are open wide and you are on a surge and rush of expression. Variety is in the mix and deciphering where to direct your energies first then next… is important. Your focus will intensify measurably when decide. You stand to accomplish a lot, especially if you are organized. This is a time to plan and act, you can network more later on.
Your creative life is in some extra fertile ground all of a sudden. Now is a good time to be in your studio or study or wherever you feel most creative. Making your space work for you is part of the plot and has been for some months. Deep cleaning, re-arranging furniture and renovations perhaps to establish a setting worthy of this new inspiration is ideal.
New friendship and association have been activated. Following through and building upon these is likely. A cooperative approach is encouraged. Be flexible and willing to comply more. Your energy levels should be rising, in tune with the changing season. Deciphering where best to ‘invest’ your energies is featured. Sweet words mean more than usual.
LEO (JUL 22 – AUG 23)
Some promising signs are showing up in your public and career life. This is an abundant and expansive time. Taking calculated risks is part of the plot. These require that you be focused and organized. Networking and communications with new friends especially is likely. There is love in the air, but it may be more friendly than romantic, for now…!
VIRGO (AUG 23 – SEP 22)
This is an adventurous time for you. Exploring new horizons feels right. This includes acquiring new tools and skills and connections. Your ability to see a bigger picture is more lucid than usual. You can see and feel many initiatives brewing. Your drive is strong and you will rebel against any blocks in your dynamic flow.

Financial matters are high on your list now. Legal matters, inheritances, investments and foreign exchange are all highlighted. Despite setbacks, your strengths are on a steady rise. This trend will continue. Yet disruptions in the home will continue to steadily unfold. These are accompanied by changes in your relationships. Work with this process.
Your relationship front is steadily expanding. You are going through many changes as well and together something brand new is being forged. It will take until autumn before you will be really clear about the implications. This is a call to let go into the flow and trust. Relationship provocations meanwhile are enticing to entertain.
Tending to your whole health implies bringing a greater measure of discipline to your regular routine. All the efforts and rewards will be your own. Creating a more attractive look and a more alert presence to situations is a motivation. Is there anything as important as health? Take time to consider what you can and perhaps must do to feel healthier.
The current continues to flow your way. Yet you are still expected to give to the situation. With your concentration powers at full force, you stand to get a lot done. This week is especially good to focus on projects and creative, constructive activity. Your focus may not be so strong by month’s end. Yet it may be best to hold off on big investments for now.
AQUARIUS (JAN 19 – FEB 19)
A peaceful, stable pace is both desired and likely these days. Happy to simply be more than do, this is a good time to rest and dream and languish. This can include practical and productive activity. But you will not be so happy if you feel pushed. Meanwhile, entertaining a variety of possibilities and indulging your desires to sample will prove satisfying.
PISCES (FEB 19 – MAR 20)
Slowly but surely you are coming around to new approaches and modes of perception. These are linked to new skills, talents and streams of income. People and circumstances are pushing you to be versatile in your approach yet focused and committed where decisions that affect others come into play. Meanwhile, creating beauty close to home will prove inspiring.

Group with unequaled track record in search of volunteers SUBMITTED
The volunteer opportunity of a lifetime is about to come open, as the longeststanding humanitarian organization in the world puts out the call
for Branch Executive Committee (BEC) members. The Trail branch of St John Ambulance (SJA) serves the entire Kootenay region, from Sparwood to Grand Forks; Nakusp to the
U.S. border, providing a three-pronged service approach including their First Aid Brigade, Therapy Dog Program, and the provision of internationally-acclaimed first aid training and
supplies. “We’re looking for energetic, enthusiastic people to help guide an ambitious mandate for growth,” said BEC chair Ralph DiSabato, who added you needn’t have a
background in first aid – just the desire to make a difference. “We want to see at least one person in every Kootenay household trained in SJA’s life-saving techniques. We want to
see our brigade at every community event. We want to see our therapy dogs in every care facility in the region.” “I’d like to see people come on board who are excited about
our potential,” say branch administrator Kyra Hoggan. Interested parties please contact Hoggan at 250-364-2067 or Kyra.Hoggan@ bc.sja.ca for more information.

Canadians are living longer and costs for the Old Age Security (OAS) are rising. On April 1, 2023 the Government of Canada plans to start raising the age of eligibility for OAS and the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) from 65 to 67.*
What does this mean for you? 54 or older as of March 31, 2012
You may still obtain OAS/GIS at age 65

The age of eligibility for OAS/GIS will change gradually between 2023 and 2029
Starting in July 2013, Canadians who are eligible for, but not yet receiving OAS will have the flexibility to delay receiving it in exchange for a higher monthly amount at a later date.

...to consider when understanding typical speech and language development is that one-year-old children should be able to say one word at a time and two-year-old children should say at least two words together. Hearing loss can interfere with a child’s speech and language development so parents should also be on the look out for hearing problems. At three-months-old a child should startle to loud sounds and by six months they should turn to where a sound is coming from. If parents notice any signs that a child may not be hearing well they should talk to an audiologist or other health professional. There are some simple things that parents and caregivers can do to promote communication development. Try following your child’s lead: get face-to-face and down to your child’s level, observe your child’s body language in order to discover what he/she is interested in, wait for your child to do or say something (be patient - it can be 10 or 15 seconds), listen to your child’s message without interrupting and then respond in a playful way.
